RAIN RFID BASICS

Item Intelligence implementations begin with item-level tagging and the incorporation of handheld and/or fixed RAIN RFID gateways or readers.

Each RAIN RFID tag contains a unique serial number that identifies the item, does not require line-of-sight reading, can be read simultaneously, and is updatable in the field.

Tagging Items Options for tagging include embedding a RAIN RFID inlay into traditional variable data printed stickers, using dedicated RAIN RFID tags; and using reusable, rugged RAIN RFID tags. The type of tag depends on the item being tagged and where and how readers will read it.

Deploying Readers Automate systems by gathering inventory and location information from always-on, ceiling-mounted reader systems or gateways. Gateways incorporate a reader and an array of antennas, require no human operator, provide very broad read coverage and can deliver item location accuracy to within a few feet. Handheld readers can be used if less frequent inventory counts are needed.
