3 Important Moments in Thai History from the 20th Century We all come on holiday or live in Thailand, but in all honesty, not many of us know about the major historic moments of the nation. Although the roots of what is today known as Thailand go as far back in
1
time as a thousand years ago when settlers from Southern China first set foot in the north of the country, we want to focus on 3 major moments of Thai history in the 20th Century.
1905 – King Rama V King Rama V’s main claim to fame is abolishing slavery in 1905. He initiated several steps from Abolished Slavery
King Rama V, King Chulalongkorn, the fifth monarch of the present House of Chakri, is one of the most famous and almost mythical monarchs in Thai history from the turn of the 20th Century. He is known as the father of modern Thai culture and the first Thai monarch to send his children away to be educated by the British colonizers in the region. Known as a man of great dignity and honor, King Rama V was said to don peasant clothing and anonymously walk among the masses, talking to his people to find out what they really wanted and desired from their country.

1867 onwards to slowly cull slavery, which culminated in the Slave Abolition Act in 1905, ending Siam slavery in all forms.

1932 – Siamese coup d’état /Thai Revolution
As anyone living in Thailand will attest, instability and uncertainty are the hallmarks of Thai politics. It is difficult to live in Thailand for several years without seeing a coup taking place before your very eyes, and the past was no different. 1932 was a critical turning point in Thai history during the 20th century and saw a change from an Absolute Monarchy to the Constitutional Monarchy system that we see in the modern Thailand of today. June 24 was the date of the ‘nearly bloodless’ Siamese Revolution of 1932, otherwise known as the Siamese coup d’état of 1932. The 1932 revolution was brought about by a relatively small group of individuals made up from military and civilian personnel. Ending the 150 years of absolution of the Chakri Dynasty, and nearly 700 years of absolute king rulers in Thailand, the crossover was a product of an evolving global change and domestic and social changes that set Thailand on the ‘modern’ path we see today, and also resulted in the first constitution in Siam.
3
1997 – Asian Economic Crisis
Many long-term expats living in Thailand will recall the madness and catastrophic nature of the 1997 Asian Economic Crisis. Perhaps one of the biggest financial crashes in history, the 1997 Asian Economic Crisis saw Thailand’s monetary system take a major hit for the first time in history, along with neighboring countries. In the early part of the 1990s, lots of money was flowing through Thailand, creating a massive gulf between the richest and poorest in the country. Spending was at an all-time high. On July 14 1997, in the wake of a major stock market crash, Thailand was forced to switch to a flexible exchange rate regime that cut the worth of the Thai BAHT by almost 50% by the end of the year, causing widespread panic and turmoil not only in government but also on the streets. It took almost 2 years to begin to see recovery and a few more to reach the heights of its former economic glory.

PROGRESSIVE LENSES 4/5 very month, Euro Optic, located opposite the Royal Garden Plaza, bring to our attention many of the factors that customers have to remember in the world of Pattaya optics. This is part 4 of 5 of our journey into the world of progressive lenses.
SOFT PROGRESSIVE SURFACES Not only were the lenses designs corresponding to the natural comportment of the users, but the surfacing techniques were also improved and lenses became more and more uniformed with nearly no difficult transition areas leading to a smooth overall surface, tremendously increasing the vision comfort of customers.

Then the developments focused on improving the surface quality by removing lots of aberrations
People with larger pupil sizes generally have more problems with vision symptoms caused by higher-

What Impact Do Higher-Order Aberrations Have on Vision Quality? The impact of higher-order aberrations on vision quality depends on various factors, including the underlying cause of the aberration.

order aberrations, particularly in low lighting conditions when the pupil opens even wider. But even people with small or moderate pupils can have significant vision problems when higherorder aberrations are caused by conditions such as scarring of the eye’s surface (cornea) or cataracts that cloud the eye’s natural lens. Also, specific types and orientation of higher-order aberrations have been found in some studies to affect vision quality of eyes with smaller pupils.
- Reading a book while lying flat on your back - Going downstairs requires you to lower the head to avoid looking through the reading portion - The impossibility of reading small text through the far power Under these considerations customers must understand that the lenses central parts are for the fovea vision (sharp vision) while the sides are for the peripheral vision (vision orientation).
Large amounts of certain higher-order aberrations can have a severe, even disabling, impact on vision quality. Although the soft progressive lenses are of perfect quality they are all-around prosthesis made for everyday life conditions, with certain limitations in a few particular situations:
These complex surfaces have precise technical requirements which if not respected may induce claims like narrow sharp vision, side disturbances, too long of a progression and much more… Unfortunately these conditions have created all kinds of horror stories such as: “it took me several days to adapt”, “I never was able to adapt to progressive lenses”” etc… creating bad views and opinions. In fact, the soft progressive lenses require higher work qualifications, more attention for visual errors correction and new testing methods to distance themselves from the traditional way of vision correction which was centered on the visual acuity.

PROCEDURES FOR THE REGISTRATION OF
BIRTH, DEATH, MARRIAGE AND DIVORCE
N
By: Magna Carta Law Office
otification of Birth A birth occurring in Thailand is legally recognized under Thai Law only if it has been duly registered at the District Office. If one of the parents is not a Thai national, it is advisable to also report the birth of the child to their respective embassy, who will issue a Consular Report of Birth Abroad or a Birth Certificate. For birth taking place in the house, the host or the mother (or any assignee) must notify the local registrar within 15 days of the birth. For birth taking place outside the house, the father or the mother or the assignee must notify the registrar of the birth district or of a district convenient to the place of birth within 15 days to 30 days of the birth. The penalty for failing to do so is up to 1,000 baht. Documents required in making the notification of birth: A) The identification card of the host, or the father, or the mother B) The host’s copy of the house registration book C) Same as (A) with the assignee’s identification card as another option Notification of Death In Thailand, any death of a foreign national or a Thai citizen must be reported to the District Office or to the Police within 24 hours. If a foreigner dies in an apartment or a hotel, the landlord or the hotel manager will be required to report the death with the deceased’s passport and death certificate, if available. The District Office or the Police will, within seven days, inform the foreigner’s embassy of the death and the embassy will, in turn, notify the next of kin as soon as possible. If the person dies in a hospital, a death certificate will be issued by the doctor and the Police will file a report. The body will be released to the family within two to three days if the cause of death is without any complications. There shall be a delay in the release of the body if the cause of death is suspicious, or a criminal act is suspected, because an autopsy will have to be performed first. When the death is confirmed, Civil Death Certificate will be issued by the District Office.

“THERE IS NOT ANOTHER STREET ANYWHERE ELSE LIKE THIS IN THE WORLD.”
w
alking Street in Pattaya has become one of the world’s most interesting and talked about places, enshrined for the ages to
behold. When my father first visited Walking Street, he said “There is not another street anywhere else like this in the world.” So true! Home to hundreds of bars and international restaurants and a selection of go-go bars and nightclubs that will make your hair curl, you would usually assume the street was an adult playground, however, Walking Street is for everyone, even families. For those of you who don’t know, in the evening, the street becomes pedestrianised. People of all ages, color, creed and cultures happily co-exist on Walking Street, which makes you think that NATO should use this as a blueprint to bring about world peace, or at least

fix Israel and Palestine, perhaps with lashings of mai pen rai. From the sandal and sock wearing Germans and stern-faced Russians trying to decode the reality they see in their midst, to quaint Asian families walking hand in hand wondering what hit them, and groups of European girls travelling around the sub-continent together, Walking Street is immense. The diverse mix of colorful characters would make this a breeding ground for the biggest social experiment the world has ever seen. A stroll along the street with your family will be a fantastic experience. Did you know that legendary music artist Michael Jackson is alive and well on Walking Street? Tales of his demise have been
greatly exaggerated. A Michael Jackson lookalike trawls the street with a bag full of tricks, literally! Michael, dressed in traditional Jacko attire that includes the hat and glove, sets up his stall anywhere he pleases and proceeds to perform a full magic show in the middle of the street. The kids will love it, and so will you. I am from a certain age group that remembers the beginning of hip-hop. Every street corner where I lived had a break-dancing crew, performing a myriad of head-spins and robotic maneuvers to the sounds of New York’s finest up and coming emcees such as Whodini,
Grandmaster Flash and the Fat Boys. Walking Street has its own break-dancing crew, consisting of several young Thai kids who wow onlookers with their agility and athleticism. Hordes of onlookers surround the crew when busting their moves. It’s yet another example of the eclectic nature if Walking Street.
a plethora of artists who will create you a selfportrait in just 20 minutes. It doesn’t matter how much I bang on about this 8th Wonder of the World, as it’s only a matter of time until Walking Street becomes preserved forever as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, enshrined for the ages to behold, much like the Terracotta Army, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon or Machu Picchu.
The only way to experience Walking Street is at first hand, and it doesn’t matter about age, nationality or physiological disposition (the more off-key the better), this is a street you will remember for the rest of your life.
Families can enjoys large parts of the street as there are some of the finest restaurants in the region, musicians sat on the floor playing acoustic guitars and

here is something magical and earthy, yet classy, about Blues music. It’s the sort of music genre that is comfortable in a dirty and grimy backstreet bar, or amidst the realms of royalty and kings. Everyone can relate to the blues, which is a mirror of life itself and a self-perpetrating art form of the highest order. Pattaya was in the
dark in terms of quality blues clubs, but Mood Pattaya, located on Pratumnak Hill is set to change everything.
62
This exclusive blues club opens every day except for Mondays with Live Music on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings to showcase the best live music in the city, within a cool and trendy atmosphere. Showcasing the gutsy skills of one of the most popular bands in the region - the Blues Machine - who were the centerpiece of other blues clubs in the area such as the Blues Factory, youPattayaCityUncovered.com can hear their stunning renditions of blues and jazz
classics at Mood Pattaya. The club has made a name for itself over the past year for its cameo performances, such as those from the legendary Tony Stevens that helped to kick-start the club. Open from 6pm until 1am, Mood Pattaya is one of the city’s best kept secrets and a bona fide hidden gem. Popular with fans of great music and those on the hi-so Thai scene, the mix of characters at the club is colorful and intriguing. ith so many options on Walking Street, it is important to know what you are seeking from a night out in the city. Walking Street is so big that you can aimlessly meander around until the next ice age
without ever visiting a bar. Talking of Ice ages, the coolest and chicest place to visit on the Street, without bumping into a few woolly mammoths, is the sub-zero temperature in the ice room of the Ice Bar V2O Pattaya, formally known as the V2O Ice Bar. Famous for its life-size polar bear mascot that is a Walking Street icon, the Ice Bar combines the trendy
