lthough we love to live or holiday in Pattaya, sometimes it’s nice to get away for a few days of proper rest and relaxation. Our Discovering Thailand articles are our way to introduce you to other holiday
destinations within a short distance of Pattaya. This month we would like to take you to the paradise island of Koh Samed, basking amidst the tropical brilliance of the Gulf of Thailand. Why choose Koh Samet? Based in the Ban-Phe – Rayong district, Koh Samed is the perfect place to get away from Pattaya for a few days if you are in search of peaceful yet charming paradise island, approximately 3 hours away from Pattaya. The island is famous for its pristine beaches and azure blue waters. There is a small choice of accommodation with the most popular form being relatively cheap beachside huts and bungalows, alongside high-class boutique resorts.
Although the island is predominantly a place to come for a relaxing beachside holiday, other interesting activities include snorkeling, scuba diving, para-sending and boat trips. There are not so many roads on the island, ensuring you can explore on foot, or you could hire a motorcycle or ATV for a real adventure. Some of the best beaches on the island include Hat Sai-kaew, Ao Hin Nok, Ao Phai, and the evertranquil Ao Nuan. There are many places of interest on the island, the best of which include the Koh Samed Mermaid, the island’s pier, Koh Samed Buddha, and fishing and boat trips out to Koh Talu and Koh Kudee. Authentic Sandwiches and Meats Although I have tasted lots of sandwiches in my time, nothing compared to the hefty Pastrami on Rye sandwich, served with coleslaw that I was offered at this quality eatery. The word ‘Sandwich’ doesn’t really do it justice. Juicy chunks of homemade pastrami with lashings of yellow mustard tumbled from the slices of my rye bread, creating the most succulent sandwich I have ever tasted.

Sample a delicious Pastrami Bacon Philly or a classic Philly Cheese Steak. All the sandwiches are authentic, with no imitations whatsoever. These sandwiches are what you will find in the best eateries across America, and nowhere else in Pattaya. sn’t food brilliant! It’s like this stuff that tastes dead good and at the same time keeps us alive – whoever thought that one up deserves a knighthood. Not quite a culinary expert, but definitely an eager consumer, spicy Thai food is the pinnacle of tasty cuisine the world over. Living in Thailand gives me the opportunity
to sample the best the nation has to offer at first hand. Although you can enjoy a great tasting meal at an upscale Thai restaurant, it never gets better than dining at one of those dusty roadside Thai restaurants or actually cooking it for yourself. The Thai name for this famous dish, Krapow Moo, translates as Spicy Stir-Fried Mince Pork with Thai Holy Basil. Don’t be scared off by its fiery appearance because you can modify the recipe with less or no red chillies. This variation of the Thai recipe is with ground/mince pork, but you could use normal sliced pork chicken, beef or seafood. Ingredients (one serving): – 3 grams of ground pork – 3 cloves of minced garlic – 3 chopped red chilli peppers – ¼ cup of basil leaf – 2 tbsp. of green bell peppers (optional) – 1 tbsp. of vegetable oil – 1 tbsp. of fish sauce – 1 tbsp. of oyster sauce – 1 tbsp. of soy sauce – ½ tsp. of sugar 40

Cooking Instructions: Cooked correctly, this spicy Thai food recipe will be one of zestiest dishes your taste buds will have ever experienced. 1. Pour the vegetable oil in a wok or pan on a medium to high heat. 2. Add the cloves of garlic until it smells good and then add the ground pork. 3. Throw in the red chillies and cook for one minute. 4. Add the green bell peppers (optional). 5. Add the soy sauce, fish sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, basil leafs and stir fry well until the pork is done. 6. Serve atop steamed white rice with a fried egg on top and you have your Krapow Moo. Summery It really doesn’t get easier than that folks. This is a healthy and spicy Thai food recipe that is cooked with only the freshest of produce. Cooking Thai food can be quite daunting for first timer because of the variation of ingredients, but in actuality Krapow Moo is very simple and more importantly healthy. Remember, this is cooking folks, not quantum physics, so don’t be afraid to cook the dish to your own unique specifications and through experimentation, you will have the most famous spicy Thai food recipe nailed down. hoever commits an offence shall be punished according to law; however, we cannot deny the fact that there are foreigners who are suspected of minor or serious offences who
suffer indefensibly resulting from the lack of understanding of the due process. Ignorance of the law is not an excuse. It is necessary to learn the local laws and customs before you travel because you will be left with no option but to follow them. Should you be faced with any legal issues, it is always best to consult with the professionals with enormous knowledge of the law. Warrant of Arrest and Confinement According to Thai law and procedure, a suspect can be arrested and detained for a period of up to 48 hours at the Police Station for thorough investigation of the offense that has allegedly been committed, provided, the Arresting Officers have explained or informed the suspect of his offense or presented a Warrant of Arrest. Police may conduct searches and seizures without a warrant when they have reasonable grounds to consider that the suspect is in possession of any illegal substances or articles that may be used to commit a crime or when the crime is committed in the presence of an arresting officer. In case the investigation is not finished in 48 hours, the police officer must request the court to grant the power for confinement extending the length of which is at the discretion of the court. Interpreter and Legal Counsel Warrant of Arrest and other verbal warnings are expected to be in Thai language. Therefore, it is essential for the police or the court to provide non-Thai suspect with an interpreter. Any arrested suspect has the right to request for a competent legal counsel, to meet him in private, and to secure his attendance during the proceedings. If the arrested suspect cannot afford a lawyer, the court can provide one without any cost. The Right to Remain Silent All suspects have the legal rights not to disclose any information without the presence of a

lawyer at every step of the investigation stage. The suspect must first be made aware that any statement he makes may be used as evidence against him. If the Arresting officer fails to notify the suspect of his legal rights upon the arrest, it would mean that any confessions made beforehand may not be used as evidence. The Right to Notify Family Members The arrested must be given a chance to notify any of his family members, relatives or friends of the said arrest and the place of incarceration, which also follows that they must also have visitation rights and an opportunity to talk to them privately. Bail A suspect or alleged offender is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Anybody charged with a criminal offense shall be admitted to bail for temporary release as a matter of right, with sufficient sureties as prescribed by law before judgment is passed by the court. The minimum bail amounts may vary because the amount of bail for each case is set by the presiding judge of each jurisdiction. In Thailand, a request for temporary release may be submitted under one of three categories: Request for temporary release by using assets, cash and government employment status. A written request must be submitted by a bailsman to the investigating officer, who will ask for particular documents. The result of the bail review shall be announced within 24 hours. If the bailsman manages to obtain bail, the suspect is released. If the suspect cannot meet bail demands, then he will remain in custody, which might result in difficulty to defend his case. Medical Treatment He has the right to an adequate medical treatment, if needed. If the suspect is sick before or during his confinement, the police on duty will have to escort the suspect to a hospital upon the approval of the Chief of Police. Passport If a suspectâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s passport is confiscated, it must be kept in mind that it should be returned immediately after the suspect has been released on bail. Police officers have the right to seize and withhold a passport only if they have a suspicion that it has been used for a criminal act or it is indeed counterfeit.

SOFT PROGRESSIVE SURFACES As the first generation of progressive lenses (spherical structure concept) were not satisfactory due to altering the peripheral vision and consequently the visual comfort, another structure concept had to be found. To deal with this problem, the aspherical surfaces concept was the perfect answer as the sidesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; aberrations could be replaced by optically controlled areas, allowing clearer vision.

Although the central part of the first progressive lenses generation, the umbilici, where the vision is sharpest, solid improvements could be made on the connecting areas at the beginning and the end of the progression as well as on the other connecting areas, smoothing the whole surface for better comfort. From this huge development it became possible to improve the connecting areas for smoother transition when the visual axe was passing from one area to another granting better comfort.
CONNECTING AREAS
Further new developments aimed at placing the different powers in the right place became possible to better the customersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; postural attitude.
As the main difficulty was cleared, the research and development team could improve the customersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; general comfort by focusing on the different power positions and everyday situations in order to reduce affecting the customersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; natural ergonomic positions. So developments like the multi design (the progression length with its optimal powers repartition according to customers age), the evolution from orthoscopy (redefining the lens design in the intermediate and the near areas for a smoother accommodation), near vision decentration towards reading power (based on binocular and convergence requirements) improved tremendously the quality of the vision, making progressive lenses more user-friendly.

Pattaya Nightlife without Walking Street

hen we talk about the Pattaya nightlife scene, it’s hard for most to see beyond the neon-lights and scantily-clad banshees on Walking Street for obvious reasons. Those in the know will tell you there is
a whole new world out there beyond ‘the street’. The world is now officially round and we won’t fall off the edge, so exploring the other nightlife zones in and around the city is essential to give you a rounder experience of Pattaya. Soi Bukhao Soi Bukhao is located just off Second Road, accessed also between Pattaya Tai and Pattaya Klang, and is the place where many of the local

Western-expats like to party, due to the prices being noticeably cheaper than Walking Street. You won’t have to sacrifice quality or quantity when you visit Soi Bukhao as there are some fantastic Agogo Bars, restaurants, guesthouses and a cacophony of girlie and beer bars. Some people stay on Soi Bukhao and never leave, but enough about my life story!

Soi 6, 7 & 8 A short stroll northwards on Pattaya Beach Road will take you towards Sois 6, 7 and 8. Soi 6 is infamous for its hedonistic nightlife scene, while Soi 7 & 8 are home to lots of girlie and beer bars, a couple of agogos such as Silverstar, restaurants that include the Pig n Whistle and also live music venues such as Rolling Live 3 Bar. This is a very hectic entertainment zone and one of the most exciting in the city. The prices are cheaper than Walking Street and the atmosphere is cozier. Naklua Naklua has been one of the fastest growing nightlife and holiday areas in and around the city over the past 5 years. Naklua can be found in North Pattaya, past the Dolphin Roundabout. Naklua is known for its many German tourists and expats, alongside some of the most upscale condo developments in the region. Naklua has hundreds of beer and girlie bars and is a bit less commercial than Walking Street and much cheaper for a night out. It only takes a 5-minute Baht-bus ride from Walking Street, so no excuses.
Jomtien For many years, Jomtien, located south of the city, has been known as the place you visit to be in Pattaya without being in Pattaya, if that makes any sense at all? Although Jomtien has a laidback demeanor and atmosphere, a nice beach, some cool and funky restaurants such as Pastrami on Rye, News Steak & Grill and Akvavit Bar & Grill, its nightlife scene can still be extremely exciting. If you are looking for dozens of girlie and beer bars in one place, visit the Rompho Complex, where you will also find the recommended Rum Dum Bar. As Thappraya Road meets Jomtien Beach Road, you will find an agogo bar, lots of beer bars and if you are that way inclined, a vast gay scene. As you can see, the entire Pattaya party philosophy doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t revolve around Walking Street.
