Thailand THE ROAD TO KANCHANABURI DAY

lthough we love Pattaya, sometimes we want to get away for a couple of days to explore something a bit different – something less commercial that can actually teach us something. So many tourist destinations in Thailand are centered on beaches, bars and temples, but areas such as Kanchanaburi, slightly to the west of Bangkok, will introduce you to a real slice of Thailand. Why Visit Kanchnaburi? Many tourists visit Thailand several times per year, and even 1 in 3 visitors to the country return again, so sometimes we want a new experience. Kanchanaburi is a great place to go to understand the recent history of Thailand and the climate during the Second World War when the Japanese used Siam as a base. Take a scenic longtail boat ride to see the famous Bridge Over The River Kwai in all of its glory. Try and keep dry eyes when you visit the allied war cemetery near the bridge and the informative yet saddening JEATH War Museum, which will touch even the hardest of souls. Other popular places of interest in Kanchanaburi are the Tiger Temple, which is a wildlife project established in 1995 by local monks who care

for abandoned wild animals such as tigers, deer, water buffaloes, horses and peacocks; and the breathtaking Kao Poon limestone caves, set amidst a stunning labyrinth of temples. If you are looking for majestic waterfalls in Kanchanaburi, visit the Erawan National Park where you will encounter Erawan Falls, which has seven levels dropping down over 1,500m and is regarded as one the more beautiful in Thailand. You can walk to each level fairly easily on the paths but if you’re aiming to get to the very top then it’s a bit of a scramble up the cliff – but it’s worth the effort though! You can swim in some of the pools created by the falls. Around the park are also several caves where you can explore and see some weird and wonderful limestone formations, stalactites and stalagmites! Kanchanaburi is steeped in beautiful countryside, making a visit to the region extremely memorable. Getting to Kanchanaburi Because Kanchanaburi is approximately a 4-hour drive from Pattaya, it is a good idea to stay overnight, so renting out a car or booking a vehicle with a driver for 2 days is essential. You can book a Kanchanaburi tour from any kiosk in Pattaya, or alternatively, you can find the info on the internet and do it yourself at your own pace, which is what we recommend you do to get the best out of the excursion. Although Pattaya is more famous for beer than Buddhism, it is still home to Viharnra Sien temple, which is one of the most impressive spiritual spots in all of Thailand. More of a museum than a normal temple, Viharnra Sien houses an impressive collection of art and antiques from China and Thailand. Viharnra Sien opened in 1987 with a royal blessing from King Rama IX, the current and widely respected monarch of Thailand. Ever since, history buffs and those seeking inspiration have come to take in the incredible amount of history in this place’s halls. The site itself is pretty large at 7 rai, and throughout the entire complex are hidden surprises and treasures that leave a lasting impression. One of the best exhibits is the lines of miniature terra cotta soldiers, exactly like the ones famously discovered in China in 1974. This is the only such exhibit of its kind that may be found outside of China. There are also many beautiful pieces carved from teak and many exhibitions detailing the history of Thailand’s monarchy, from before the current dynasty to the present day. While Viharnra Sien may not be a traditional temple, it is in its own way a place of reverence and respect for the history of Thailand and China, an impressive celebration of these awe-inspiring lands.

f you are a foreigner intending to work in Thailand, you are subject to the Alien Employment Act, which requires you to have a work permit to be issued by the Ministry of Labour except for an approved temporary and urgent work for a period not exceeding fifteen days. In accordance with the format and procedures prescribed under the Ministerial Regulations, a Work Permit defines the locality you are permitted to work, length of time permitted to work, category or nature of work and the employer for whom you will be working. Any intention to change or increase the category of work, employer, working locality or conditions shall be effective only upon the approval of the Registrar in accordance with the rules and procedures prescribed under the Ministerial Regulations. Failure to comply with Thailand’s Employment regulations shall be punishable by fines and/or imprisonment. Any work may be performed by foreigners provided that it is a job that will not in anyway compromise the national security, career opportunity of the Thai people and if the demand for foreign labour is necessary for national developments. Here are some of the jobs that foreigners are most likely to land: • Teaching English and Translation • Computer and Information Technology • Engineering • Writing and Editorship • Sales Professionals • Hotel Management and Culinary • Music and Entertainment • Specialized Skills • Opening Your Own Business Any Foreigner who intends to work in Thailand must have a residence in Thailand or must be authorized to enter Thailand temporarily in accordance with the Immigration Law. The first step in the work permit application process is to obtain the correct visa. In most cases, the applicant will be required to apply for a Non-Immigrant Type “B” Visa which can be obtained in your home country or any neighbouring countries of Thailand. This allows the applicant to stay in Thailand for the initial 90 days which shall give ample time for the application of a work permit to take place. A Work

Permit is issued for a period of up to one-year and may be which shall then be valid only as long as your visa allows you to remain in Thailand. If the duration of employment of a foreigner is less than one year, a Work Permit will be granted for not longer than the period requested. Important points to consider in order to be granted a work permit • It is important to consider the registered capital of the company that you will be working for. One foreigner can be hired by a company for every 2,000,000 Baht registered paid-up capital, but a company shall only be allowed up to a maximum of 10 work permits. However, certain considerations apply in certain situations. • The occupation to be performed is not prohibited to foreigners by the Alien Employment Act of Thailand • There are legal requirements for a minimum number of Thai employees per foreign employee depending on the status of the company. The standard ratio is 4 Thai employees to 1 foreign employee. • It is compulsory for every company to pay TAX and contribute to the Social Security Funds. Companies not complying with the laws of the Business Development and the Revenue Departments are not eligible to apply for a work permit for you. • Non-immigrant visa must be obtained before entering Thailand. Non-Immigrant Visa and Work Permit holders must keep in mind to report to the immigration office every 90 days and notify them of current address. If you wish to leave and re-enter the country within the validity period of your Visa and Work Permit, you are required to apply for and obtain a re-entry permit (single or multiple) at the Immigration office before leaving the country. If you leave without a re-entry permit, the permit for you to stay for the rest of the non-immigrant visa duration will become invalid and you will have to start the entire process over again. You, as the work permit recipient have the right to keep your Work Permit but it shall be your responsibility to make it available at all times especially during working hours. However, for security purposes and so as to be handy any time a Competent Official or Registrar demands a proof of employment authorization, this can also be kept by your employer at your workplace. As the distances were only far (walking) and near (reading), professionals did not worry too much.

The ergonomics at that time were concerning only the observed distance and lenses were prescribed for what customers were defining as their most convenient distances with 2 separated glasses. Over the years, professionals got used to only worrying about the distances and defining the less disturbing powers, as they were using mono power lenses (single vision lenses). But as civilization evolved its urban lifestyle, the intermediate vision became important and as the distances varied, complications appeared (sales clerks standing at a counter, engine drivers looking at the dash board, teachers walking looking at pupils writing and so-on).

These disturbances could not be eradicated, although the industry tried all kinds of bifocal designs, explaining the relative success of the bifocals and the dominance of reading glasses. In the case of trifocals, although the intermediate vision was corrected, the lens design was not satisfactory as the 2 dividing lines were doubling the problems encountered with the bifocals.

Beyond the acuity the bifocals and trifocals imposed on the professionals to be more precise in powers definition and in lenses positions in front of the eyes in order to minimize the head and neck movements. Despite all that was intended, the natural vision of the user was so disturbed that it explains the poor commercial success of these solutions. In fact, those solutions were imposed on the users, to adapt to the glasses rather than to have the glasses adapted to them, leading to the kind of approach “it’s this way or the highway” in other words “take it or live it”.
