Opportunity: Business & Commercial
JUMP INTO BUSINESS Young Jim’s Test & Tag franchisee makes a wise decision
J
osh Harmer doesn’t let the grass grow under his feet. Before he could complete his degree, he was offered an important post with a commercial painting company, then got head-hunted as business development manager for a construction equipment firm. Thanks to Jim’s Test & Tag, at the age of just 25 Josh now has a great and growing business of his own, and time for family life too. ‘Working in construction recruitment, I frequently had to put in 70-hour weeks, including weekends,’ he says. ‘When my wife Emily had our daughter 16 months ago, I began to realise I’d never see her growing up.’ Josh knew of Jim’s Test & Tag and, after some thorough research, decided it offered a better life for a young father. The franchise provides safety testing services for electrical equipment in workplaces, as well as inspection and sales of fire prevention equipment. ‘I felt a franchise offered greater security, and I knew all about the emphasis upon health & safety in the construction world,’ he explains. ‘My father is a consultant in the construction industry and is an excellent business coach, while mum basically said, ‘Think of your family,’ and encouraged me to go for it. Emily is just delighted the franchise allows me to spend more time with her and our gorgeous little girl while still making a good living.’
Josh Harmer: More family time and a good living too
No qualifications needed You don’t need electrical qualifications to be a Jim’s Test & Tag franchisee – all training and specialist equipment is included for an investment of $55,000 +gst, which covers everything other than a vehicle. Josh did his training in September 2020 and began work the next month. ‘My local franchisor, Brian Martin, was with me for the first few weeks and gave me a great grounding in the industry. The franchisees are a close-knit team and we all help each other out when needed.’ Health & Safety regulations mean there is no shortage of work for Jim’s Test & Tag. ‘All Kiwi businesses must ensure their workplace is safe, and electrical equipment needs to be inspected at least annually,’ says Josh. ‘In fact, most building site or workshop equipment needs three- or six-monthly inspections, so once you get a client on board, you’ll be seeing them regularly – and generating a recurring income each time.’ ‘Any leads that come through are 90 percent likely to turn into a sale because the clients have come looking for the services we offer. Yes, you need to do some cold calling, but it’s no Advertiser Info problem building up your business – I Jim’s Test & Tag turned my first employer into a major www.jimstestandtag.co.nz client with just one phone call!’ Jim’s Test & Tag has franchise opportunities available now throughout the country.
