12/ LIVE TO

space saving transformable furniture system

(c) LIVE TO

LIVE TO provides a brand new living system targeting 18 to 30 years old age group, two people per flat. According to the current living trend and various analysis, Hong Kong citizens will face the serious housing shortage in the coming years. Under the limited resources we have, LIVE TO aims to provide a visionary space saving living experience. Although space is limited, we are not live to live but LIVE TO____, defined by the resident.

Project Duration: Sept, 2017 - Apr, 2018 Nature: School Final Year Project

13

Hong Kong has long had the smallest average flat sizes in the world, about 470 sq ft. The amount of projected population will reach the peak in 2043, to 8.22 million. The population will keep on growing in the coming 30 years. It creates great pressure to the housing system in Hong Kong.

CHINESE CULTURE 成家立室 安居樂業 Chinese culture inherits the values of living and working in peace and contentment, establishing a family, reflecting the thirst for security and stability in the home. The family seems like a safe haven for Chinese people. In the past, people live in the rural areas. Unsuspecting farmland and mountains are faced with violent insolation and precariousness. People always want to go back to the shelter - home. In the modern society, the intense interpersonal relationships lead people willing to go home when relaxing and apart from working.

14/ LIVE TO

LIVE TO SHARE Apart from the newly introduced flat layout, LIVE TO also different from the usual floor plan. By removing the toilet and kitchen from each flat and putting them into two common areas, it increases the number of flats from 10 to 13. There are two common areas from each floor. Residents can share the kitchen and bathroom area. There are also the washing machine, fridge and a large dinning table to gather with. This change not just increase the flat provided but also enhance the neighbourhood bonding by letting the daily rountine to semi-private activties. Citizens can purchase the minimal flat with a lower price and the increase of flats number profits the developer.

The ceiling height is increased from 3.2m to 4m. Also, the windowsill is removed to maximize the efficiency of the use of space. 3035mm

16/ LIVE TO

FURNITURE SYSTEM Under the brand new floor plan and flat layout, LIVE TO also includes a space saving furniture system for an advancel iving quality or an idealistic living style in the coming years. In order to tackle with the limited space, the essential objective is to minimize the size of the furnitures. Second step is to add in the flexbility. Therefore, the whole furniture system includes the concept of multi-functional items, use of height, folding by hinge and rotational by bearing.

17

Design Strategy Double level rest and relax area include a double bed, closet the loft starts at 2m ceiling height, users can stand on both layers

Work & Dine zone providing flat surfaces of a table height with hidden chairs, include two chairs and two turning, connective surface with different hinge and axis , it allows a transformable performance

Flip stair providing the mobility between different layers and storage, total of eight rotatable steps, forming a 180 degree turning

Storage providing adequate storage include a a cabinet& shoe wardrobe, fits the corner

Transformable closed when not in use, include the stair and the work zone allow them flip closely against the wall, giving a large empty area

18/ LIVE TO

LIVE TO____ With the above furniture system, it fulfils the basic physical needs of a home. LIVE TO not only provide you a place to rest, but also allow you to enjoy different living style. Let you define LIVE TO ____. The below shows two kinds of suggested application with LIVE TO furniture system. When the furniture system is closed, the whole flat transforms into another usage, like the cat playground and garden below. LIVE TO allows user to purchase their flat with preferred living style by applying the furniture system flexibly.

LIVE TO COMPANY When the furniture system is closed, it gives a large empty area. Applying the same mechanism, rotation axis, it creates a large cat playground in the apartment. Even when the furniture system is in use, cat can still climb around the house and stay in their own house.

The two pillars at the back can be rotated. When the furniture system is closed, the whole apartment turns into a cat playground. Even the pillars are not turned, they can still serve as the cat house.

22 / ECHO DE LA MER

interactive installation for releasing stress

(d) ECHO DE LA MER Echo de la mer is an outdoor interactive installation for stress releasing in the campus. The idea comes from the bottle message. People who are suffering under pressure, we portray that it is an endless waiting for hope, just like throwing out a bottle message into the sea.

This is not an endless waiting. We enlighten them with hope.

Project Duration: Jul to Dec 2016 Team Members: Alice Wu/Crystal Pang/ Jada Hung/Paula Siu Nature: Local Competition

LOGO DESIGN

PROJECT IMAGE

This project won the second winner up award from the Disney ImagiNations Hong Kong 2016 Design Competition. BELOW: project displaying day in the Hong Kong Disneyland.

24 / ECHO DE LA MER

LA MER Users can speak, shout, sing, meditate or take a rest in their own spaces. The bottles can capture sound waves, and has a response from the echo of the sea, giving users a feedback but not in a direct and disturbing way. In the dark, it still shines bright, just like being in a spacious ocean, when you look up, a silver moon shines high up in the sky, and there is hope underneath. Same as those stressful people, all they need is a tiny little simple motion or incidents that will cheer you up, for example, a warm embrace, like what la mer gives.

25

LOCATION Hong Kong Polytechnic University campus Echo de la mer consists of two parts: La mer & Blubbur. La mer allows user to express their depressions and frustrations by various ways. Blubbur acts as the receiving centre which collects messages from la mer and giving feedback.

ripples give them a feeling: roaming on the water surface

26 / ECHO DE LA MER

BLUBBUR Sometimes stress cannot be verbally expressed, which others might not fully understand what they are facing. La mer & Blubbur. It interacts between each other in a far distance. It may only be a temporary relief if you just express the stress physically in La mer. If there is someone, or even something, that touches one’s heart by showing sympathetic. It gives a greater encouragement to the person spiritually.

27

Those bubbles have a shining effect which acts like an SOS signal to the viewer, curiosity is what leads the people to those bubbles, wanting to know what’s happening inside. When people walk by blubbur, they are seeing a silhouette projection from la mer. People might have an instinct to touch the bubbles. At this moment, they have just done something for the people who are suffering from stress at la mer side who need a hand from them. How to show la mer’s problem is solved? When the blubbur turns into cool colors, there are problems needed to be solved. If the problem is solved, blubbur tur ns into warm, soft color. Sometimes, problems cannot be solved completely, there is a transition colour, purple, to represent the progress. Same as the shadow part, when the people touch the shadow, it will fade away, just like things will eventually turn better if there is someone willing to stay by your side and defeat the darkness in life together.

Sea surface messages spread out widely on bubbles by colour changes, opacity, silhouette

28 / ECHO DE LA MER

USER FLOW It shows the interaction between La mer & blubber. Including the stress releasing, replying feedbacks and most importantly, the emotional support to the users.

<<<< Messages in La mer will fade out. As a metaphor, it means that someone understands how you feel. It touches the deepest side of your heart. It is time to let go of the problems.

The messages are transformed into visual effects that attract people to come near this area. It also projects the silhouette of the users in La mer.

30/ NOURISHMENT

self-sufficient kitchen block

(e) NOURISHMENT

In a typical modern lifestyle, especially in metropolitan cities, having a secured food source is getting more and more difficult around the world. Most of the people live very far from where foods are harvested. There are no way to figure out what kind of food processing these foods went through before arriving us. The design concept for the next generation kitchen system could be the one of solution to provide secure and clean food source in urban living condition.

Project Duration: July, 2017 Team Members: Daisuke Nagatomo/ Minnie Jan@MisoSoup Design / Paula Siu Nature: International competition

31

“Nourishment” is a self-sufficient farming surface equipped kitchen system, which incorporates with durable ceramic glass counter top surface for cooking top and interactive screen.

SCHOTT CERAN® is a German-based world market leader in glass-ceramic cooktop panels. They are always working on new solutions, about the material glass-ceramic. It pushed them to a collaboration with designboom and the idea of a special design competition: putting SCHOTT CERAN® glass-ceramic cooking panel in the center and create the space around it. Think of new kitchen block designs with combination of different materials.

33

CHALLENGE This is the inital design of the self-sufficient kitchen. It is reminded that to be careful of the scale and the actual structure. So I have to remove the layers and make it not that transparent, for the pipes and water flow.

Size and shape of the final design

34 / NOURISHMENT

MECHANISM The self-sufficiency concept consists with reuse of two main resources, which are water and food waste during the cooking process. Wasted water is filtered after the kitchen sink and goes to the water reservoir of aquaponics, which can produce not only green vegetables but also aquatic animal such as fish and prawns. Meanwhile, the wasted food can be processed at the bottom of sink to convert for food composite which will be great nutrients for soil based farming vegetables. All these complex farming systems are embedded under the clean ceramic glass surface to emphasize simplicity of its design.

35

36 / NOURISHMENT

INTERACTIVE INDUCTION COOKING TOP The ceramic glass surface provides not only high efficiency induction cooking top, but also interactive computer screen for “Nourishment” system to monitor nutrient level of farming medium, check pollution level of water, and connect with other “Nourishment” system for sharing their harvests with others.

37

KITCHEN ISLAND This kitchen island design serves as a separation between dining room and the kitchen. Locating at the middle of the kitchen, it enhances the interaction between the one who is preparing the meal and the other members. It also favours the use of the interactive cooking top, to connect and share.

38 / ROUNDLE

desktop lighting for Chinese restaurant

(f) ROUNDEL

A good lighting can enhance the mood and create a visual interest in a restaurant. Roundel is inspired by the tea cup in Chinese restaurant. Getting the idea of Chinese culture, introverted. Regular look is given to Roundel when people see the outer form. Inside the cup, a round shou pattern is designed to project the oriental taste.

Project Duration: July, 2016 Nature: School project @PolyU

40 / ROUNDLE

3D PRINTING As the extruded pattern on the inner wall was very complicated and the extrude length of the different parts was various. Roundel was considered to be hard to be produced by the traditional manufacturing methods. 3D print was a flexible manufacturing method, the pattern inside the Roundel can be customized by the consumers when it is in the market for production. It can attract a larger group of customers.

41

CHINESE RESTAURANT IN HK / MOOD BOARD It is found that most of the chinese restaurants are lacking of well planned lighting system.

42 / ROUNDLE

SCENARIO Roundle is placed in the Chinese restaurant and in the living room. 3D PRINT MODEL the round shou pattern is projected on the inner wall. INTROVERTED getting the idea of Chinese culture, introverted. Regular look is given to Roundel when people see the outer form. ROUND SHOU PATTERN round shou pattern means longevity in Chinese word with the center 壽 . I designed the pattern with other propitious signs, like the clouds and bats.
