Meet Fred Herbst, Associate Professor of Art at CCC. B.F.A. in Art (Sculpture emphasis), Art History minor, University of Wisconsin Stevens Point
M.F.A. in Ceramics, University of North Texas SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching (2007)
unique
Fred designed a very wood-fired kiln at CCC, and in the process, created a learning opportunity not only for students, but for the ceramics and glass communities at large.
ceramics
The unique design allows to be fired and at the same time allows blowers to gather and blow glass.
glass
It was designed in collaboration with Steve Gibbs and Lewis Olson from Corning Museum of Glass (CMOG) in 2007. No other kilns like it existed in the world at the time.
hybrid
The kiln has allowed for new research into techniques such as covering with glass frit during loading, applying molten to ceramics during firing, and wrapping ceramics that are removed from the kiln with molten glass strings.

It was demonstrated to participants of the Glass Art Society conference in June 2009.

“I graduated at the of my high school class and got into all the I wanted. However, I realized I wouldn’t be able to afford any of the four-year colleges I’d gotten into. I realized that by attending CCC, I would save a lot of money and I would be eligible for more if I applied to those four-year schools as a student.

“Theatre is very serious, disciplined work. Theatre is being used right now to train to be more aware of how they impact others. Theatre teaches —being able to put yourself in someone else’s shoes; —understanding people who aren’t exactly like you; and working together , which is probably the most important work skill a person can have. Not only does it teach you life and work skills, it’s fun while learning.”

Above: Marlowe Lowe, ‘10 works on one of her favorite projects—painting a storybook-themed mural on the side of the Savona Free Library in Savona, NY. The colorful mural was designed with input from local children and adults, and features pirates, dragons, and characters from “Alice in Wonderland.” CCC’s Mural Painting Workshop offered through the Academic & Workforce Development Center in Elmira is held at the newly-renovated Community Arts of Elmira (CAE) building on Lake Street. The class is a natural fit with the growing effort to revitalize Elmira. Student murals landed a front-page article on the Star Gazette in July 2008.
