The Mission of Catholic Charities of Steuben County is to build communities that care for all people by strengthening and enriching the quality of life for individuals, families and children; working to reduce poverty; and advocating for social justice, which helps fulfill Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Rochester’s commitment to build a just and compassionate society rooted in the dignity of all people.

It’s Not Too Late to Support the STEPS Walk — Steps To End Poverty in Steuben CCSC recently held its sixth annual anti-poverty walk, Steps To End Poverty in Steuben (STEPS). CCSC took a unique approach this year, holding STEPS on two separate dates in three separate locations: May 3rd in Bath and Hornell and May 17th in Corning. Walkers participated in the session that best accommodated their schedules, or walked on a date and time of their own choosing. The purpose of the one-mile walk was to increase awareness about poverty in Steuben County and to raise funds for Catholic Charities' antipoverty programs, including Turning Point, Bridges Out of Poverty, and Justice and Peace, which place an emphasis on self-sufficiency and work to ensure Steuben County residents have food, clothing, shelter, medical services, and the ability to achieve a decent standard of living. Participants were able to pre-register online at stepswalk.kintera.org/ steps. Here, participants were able to create a

team, join a team, or register as an individual walker. Those registering online were able to customize an individual or team web page, including uploading photos. The website also features an online quiz where you may test your knowledge of poverty conditions in Steuben County. Everyone scoring 100 percent on the quiz – which may be taken limitless times – will have a chance to win a stainless steel grill set with durable metal carrying case. A CCSC representative will draw the winner on May 20, 2014. CCSC employees embrace the challenge and the responsibility of serving all people who come to us in need, treating every individual in a non-judgmental manner with respect, care, and compassion. We aim to constructively and aggressively take STEPS to address the issues related to poverty in our community — one person, one family, one child at a time.

SHAPE Helps Area Kids Find the Spirit of Christmas On December 14, 2013, the Supportive Home Parent Enrichment (SHAPE) Allegany staff Corinne Davis, Debra Miller, and Josh Hyde participated in the 21st annual Shop With A Cop event at the Wellsville KMart. SHAPE staff have participated in the program for the past five years. The program allows children of families at risk to make Christmas purchases for their family. The children are escorted through the store by a police officer while they purchase presents for their families.

104 children ages five to 14 participated this year. Once they are done shopping, each child also receives a present. Special thanks to the New York State Police Department, Allegany County Sheriff’s Department, and local police forces. Also participating were representatives from Alfred Martial Arts, Allegany County DSS, and the Wellsville Manor. The program is made possible by money raised by the Wellsville Chamber of Commerce, Wellsville K-mart, and donations

Bath Community Child Day Care Every child is different, but they all have one thing in common. They like to have fun! That’s why at Bath Community Child Day Care we’ve designed a summer full of fun for our school age children. On a daily basis children will benefit from a safe, structured, and developmentally appropriate environment; nutritious meals and snacks; and plenty of time with children their age. For parents, our program is flexible and allows for vacation weeks, provides meals so you won’t be scrambling for the lunch box every morning, and our fees are based on a sliding scale. We also provide reading and math enrichment weekly so that children will have a better chance of retaining what they learned during

gave out pinwheels with messages for honesty, respect, and positive choices. The kids even got to play pin the tail on Pinocchio, with none other than Pinocchio himself! The kids and families were also provided with booklets for car safety, healthy eating habits, emergency preparedness and information on how to become a foster parent. It was a great time for all to learn about honesty, safety, and having fun!

Pinwheels for Prevention When Spring arrives, be sure to keep your eyes open for the beautiful pinwheels gracing area communities. April is Prevent Child Abuse Month and organizations across the state, including Kinship Family and Youth Services, have adopted the pinwheel as a symbol of the good things that are happening in our community to support children. We believe it is important to give all children a healthy and happy start and that everyone has a role to play in protecting our youth.

Therapeutic Foster Care Program May is National Foster Care Recognition Month! The Therapeutic Foster Care Program through Kinship Family & Youth Services was started in 1985 to provide another local alternative for counties needing to place children at a “higher level of care” than a county-level foster home could provide. Therapeutic foster care is specialized care for children and youth with special psychological, social, emotional or behavioral needs who can respond in close relationships within a family setting, and whose special needs require more intense or therapeutic services than are found in traditional foster care. At present we serve children and families from six counties across the southern tier including: Allegany, Chemung, Livingston, Schuyler, Steuben and Yates. Services provided by our staff include case planning, permanency planning, and coordination of medical care and educational plans for each child in our program. In addition, we provide ongoing support and care for foster parents, including weekly contact with a Child and Family Support Worker and planned respite. Emergency assistance is available 24/7 by foster care staff who provide afterhours on call coverage. Children placed in the Therapeutic Foster Care program at

Kinship remain in the care and custody of their local Department of Social Services. The children we serve are between the ages of birth and twenty-one, who are at risk of physical abuse, neglect or sexual abuse, or whose behaviors make it difficult for them to remain in their home. Many of our youth have developmental or physical disabilities, and often they are “stepping-down” to a therapeutic foster home placement after having successfully completed programs at a higher level of care. Kinship staff work closely with the referring departments and the birth families to effectively and safely plan for the future of each child, which may include returning the child to his or her parents or another family member, or preparing the child to live independently. We work diligently to promote permanency for each child in our care. A necessary component of this program is our foster parents. These special people open their homes and their hearts to children and families, providing love, support, supervision, encouragement, discipline, structure, and stability, while promoting permanency for them as well. Foster parents receive a monthly room and board allowance for each child placed with them. Recruitment of prospective foster homes throughout our six-county region is ongoing to enhance the number and locations of our homes, which are crucial for our success. Anyone interested in becoming a foster parent is welcome to contact the Director of Foster Care or the Foster Home Finder for further information and an application packet.

There are certain necessary requirements to becoming a therapeutic foster parent. You must:  Be resident of New York State  Be a responsible, mature, healthy adult 21 years of age or older, capable of meeting the needs of children in therapeutic foster care  Be willing to undergo a thorough background check, including fingerprinting. You must also have no previous history of child abuse or neglect  Have adequate housing for children placed in your home. In addition, your home must meet and pass health and fire/ safety inspections conducted by Kinship  Complete thirty hours of precertification preparation classes (MAPP/GPS II) and be willing to complete the required fifteen hours of ongoing training per parent, per year  Have reliable transportation to meet the child’s needs as they relate to health, mental health, dental, and school appointments, family visitation, and meetings for court and service planning. Our GOALs are:  To support the family unit, striving to recognize their unique strengths in our provision of services;  To enhance each individual’s capability to contribute to the life of their family,  To enrich the quality of family life: building individual selfconfidence, self-determination, and strengthening the life and personal coping skills needed to become participating, contributing members of the community. Our COMMITMENT is to provide people with the quality care and services they need, empowering them to meet their goals in as short a time as can be reasonably required to achieve a permanent, healthy change in their lives and in that of their families.

Steuben Council on Addictions Welcomes New Employees

Steuben Council on Addictions welcomes new employees Pam Aini (left) and Michele Sexsmith (right).

The Steuben Council on Addictions would like to welcome two new employees, Pam Aini and Michele Sexsmith, to our team. Pam joined Steuben Council as the Drug Free Communities Program

Assistant. Pam was previously employed for 23 years as a Paralegal for the District Attorney. She also served as a court clerk in Canisteo Village Court, owned Finger Lakes Paralegal Services, and since 2010 has served as the Administrator for the NYS STOP-DWI Association. Upon learning about the Drug Free Communities grant in Steuben County, Pam was interested in exercising her background and experience to branch out into the world of prevention and become involved in working toward a drugfree community for our youth. "I am very excited to join the team and especially to be a part of the Coalition for Drug Free Communities. I look forward to working toward the goal of keeping our communities safe and our youth drug free."

Michele is joining us as a Prevention Educator with a focus in outreach to adult populations, but will also be doing some work within schools. She comes to us with great excitement to meet new people and to make new connections in the community. She is originally from Fairport, NY and currently resides in Hornell with her family. She has two sons ages 10 and 13. In her spare time she enjoys gardening and most of all being with her family. Prevention is a field that Michele enjoys working in because it is a chance to help people better themselves. With a degree in art therapy and many years in prevention, Michele is going to be a great asset to Steuben Council on Addictions. Welcome aboard Pam and Michele, we are excited to have you as members of our staff!

Turning Point: Our Neighbors in Need Have you ever imagined what it would be like not to have the items to provide a meal for your family? There are many families that fit that criteria and we at Catholic Charities are striving to eliminate the odds. In 2013 Turning Point Food Pantry experienced an influx of families coming in for pantry assistance for their daily needs. Since then, this number has only escalated due to the latest Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) cuts. In 2009 the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) was passed to allow for a temporary boost in SNAP benefits to offset the economic downturn. This Act al-

lowed for SNAP recipients to receive a 13.6% increase in their maximum monthly SNAP allotment. The ARRA was not renewed and ended on October 31st, 2013. This means that since November 1st, 2013 all SNAP recipients will receive a decrease in their benefits. This change is happening in every state across the country. Most SNAP recipients will see a decrease of about $11 dollars per person. We have never had such an influx of applicants for the Thanksgiving Basket as we had this year. We have surpassed our 400 mark from last year and we reached 620 households served. SCRM and Hornell

served an additional 365 to our 620 for a total of 985 households for Thanksgiving county-wide. All sites combined served a total of 330 households at Christmas, though not all though formal adopt a family (SCRM does different program) Our community has met this need with a generous response thanks to the Greater Bath Area Thanksgiving Project. But this increase is an indication that this winter will be a difficult one for many families in our area. These times call for us all to partner together.
