If you have brought it in today, highlight the key points that you should have included…..Ready?

• Let’s remember that Andrew Johnson was going to have issues from the start….Lets remind ourselves of his AGENDA…..

Lincoln/Johnson Speedy Recovery

Lenient States never actually left the Union 10% Plan (Lincoln) – ten percent of southern voters needed to take an oath of loyalty Generous amnesty to allow southerners to retain property and reacquire political rights

13th Amendment – abolish slavery Reluctant to support additional political rights for African Americans

Radical Republicans RADICAL (extreme) change *punish south *more power for Republican Party *Rights for African Americans Believed the south should be punished for starting the war Reconstruction Act of 1867 •Divide south into five military districts •Must ratify 14th Amendment •Rights for Freedman

13th Amendment – abolish slavery 14th Amendment – citizenship and equal protection 15th Amendment – right to vote for African Americans Extended Freedman’s Bureau to provide food, clothing, shelter, and education to freedman and war refugees

Now we’ve reviewed his troubled presidency.. On the top of your A3 Sheet write; “Revision Sheet 1 – The Johnson Presidency and selection of Grant 1865-1868” Use this sheet to prepare for your CA this term…..

• It is MY theory that even if Lincoln had NOT been assassinated, rather than being remembered for being a great President, he would have found it difficult to rebuild the United States (RECONSTUCTION) (David Blight)

• Johnson and Lincoln shared the same beliefs…”reconciliation” Johnson failed, and so would have Lincoln. • Whilst Lincoln freed the slaves, like his vice president, he wanted to pardon southerners for war crimes. Both of them were also reluctant to give black people more rights. The radical Republicans wanted to give black people MORE rights. Some, like Thaddeus Stevenson wanted to go even further….

“Why did the Republicans select Grant for the 1868 election?” • What really annoyed the Republicans about Johnson? • Look back at your revision sheet. • Highlight everything Johnson did which upset the Republican party. • Lets do this together………… • There are a number of reasons that Grant was chosen. Not only did he win the war for the Northern Army, but he was also a radical Republican. Johnson also made some mistakes….

• Why did the Republicans select Grant? • Lets see what you have……...
