Activation • American troops began landing in South Vietnam en masse in 1965 at Da Nang. They began to send troops because they did not believe that South Vietnam had the power or ability to prevent a Communist take over from the North. • Most of Vietnam is Jungle with highlands. 90% of the population lived in villages, scattered all over the countryside. It was a peasant economy, relying on crops to survive. Most Vietnamese were uneducated and poor. Few lived in major cities or towns. The major ones are highlighted on the map (page 161)
Americans land at Da Nang, 1965 • They landed un-opposed and were welcome with flowers. Any Viet-Cong simply watched and faded away. Locate Da-Nang on your map.
