Activation • The World in 1933.

• The Wall Street Crash in 1929 caused major problems around the globe. • In Germany, Hitler was voted into power to sort out unemployment problems, caused by America's withdrawal of financial support. • The British became unwilling to help solve international problems because problems at home needed solving. • Countries were unwilling to back trade sanctions as a punishment because trade became so important. • Some countries saw the expansion of their own Empires as a solution to their problems. Hitler had promised the German people that he would restore German pride, as did Mussolini in Italy. •

In Asia, Japan had similar ambitions…

Name the Leaders and their Countries… • Hitler • Mussolini • Emperor Hirohito

• Italy • Japan • Germany

Manchuria Corfu – The League acted quickly in Corfu in 1923. This did not happen in Manchuria. Japan invaded Manchuria in 1931. It took the League a full year to present a report about the crisis. They demanded that Japan withdraw from Manchuria, but in 1933 the Japanese invaded more of China. The League voted 42-1 criticising Japan. Japan left the League of Nations in anger. What should the league do?

Why did the League fail? What Could The League Do?

Why It Couldn’t Do It

Place Economic Sanctions on Japan

The Leagues strongest members, Britain and France, did not want another War.

Ban weapon sales to Japan

America was Japans biggest trading partner. But it was not a member of the League. It didn’t have to obey the League’s rules.

Declare War on Japan

This would make Japan angry and it would invade more territory to seek resources to build their own.

Complete the table above

What did the League do? • The League did nothing. Japan and Manchuria seemed too far away to worry about. It condemned Japan for the invasion but sent no aid to the Chinese.

Demonstration 1) Look at the picture given to you by your teacher. What is the cartoonist’s opinion of; • Japan (look at the word on the floor/look at the mans uniform) • The League of Nations 2) The League did nothing to stop Japan invading the rest of China. How do you think this would make Japan feel? You must use at least one of these words and put it into a sentence. Encouraged Afraid Confident Unsure
