Lesson objectives: •What are IVF, AID , AIH? •What are religious views on the above?

It has been estimated that at some time in their reproductive lives at least a quarter of couples experience a period of infertility (inability to conceive) lasting over 1 year1 Some of these couples continue to be unable to conceive (start being pregnant ‘naturally’), leading to at least 1 in 6 couples seeing an infertility specialist at a hospital2.

A woman is given drugs to help her produce eggs. These are collected and fertilized with her partner’s sperm outside her body (in a ‘test tube’). If the treatment works, the eggs are replaced inside the woman’s uterus. Usually 2-3 fertilised eggs are replaced in this way to increase the chances of success. Most couples have three cycles of treatment at an average cost of £3,420 to the NHS in 2006.

2. What is the difference between AIH and AID?

AIH = This is artificial insemination by the husband. Doctors collect the husband’s sperm samples and they are artificially placed in the neck of the womb. AID = This is artificial insemination by a donor. The same as AIH but it uses an anonymous donor’s sperm. A recent law means that sperm donors in the UK cannot remain anonymous; this has led to a big shortage of donors in Britain. Why do you think this is?
