Aim: To learn about what racism was like in Martin Luther King’s day. To know how Martin put his faith into practice To know Christian teaching on prejudice.

Whilst watching the next clip think about how our actions can sometimes be seen as prejudice even if we do not intend to be.

Prejudice affects a large population of the world. There are different ways that people show prejudice against each other. There are simple things or gestures that can be a sign of prejudice.


Activation

• Until the 1960’s some

laws in part of the USA meant black people were discriminated against. • White and black children were not taught together in school. • People were segregated on buses- black people were made to sit at the back and white people could sit were they liked.

Task- Explain what the work segregation means?


• Blacks were also forbidden to enter • AND... churches, beaches, shops, cafes and most public • Since black people were places. not allowed to vote it meant they could not get any of these laws changed.


• Martin Luther King was a black American who suffered discrimination

himself.

• As a Christian, he believed treating people unfairly because of the colour of their skin was against Jesus’ teaching of ‘love your neighbour’.

• SO... • In 1956 he began joining in with campaigns against any treatment that discriminated against black people.

Task- What were MLK’s beliefs and how did this influence his work?


• Martin Luther King took direct action by organising boycotts of public transport like the buses. • They stopped using the buses until they were allowed to sit where they liked... • This worked well as the bus companies lost LOTS of money!!!


• He also organised lots of demonstrations and peace marches and was joined by millions of black and white people from across America and made many important speeches.

•Despite being stabbed, arrested and having his house bombed Dr. King knew that God’s love was always in him. •This made him determined to carry on fighting for equal rights.


 Listen to the speech.  At the end you will have 1 minute to write

down how it made you feel.  How did you think it made the people listening to it feel? Both black and white.

Demonstration  Should violence be used to fight racism?  Why did Martin Luther King choose to

challenge prejudice in the way he did?  How successful was he? Give some examples of what he did and what was achived/  Racist laws have been changed and Black people have equal rights today but does prejudice still exist?

Luther King or Desmond Tutu What examples of prejudice did they face? How did they challenge prejudice and discrimination? Who does they religious belief influence them? Why did they use peaceful methods to challenge prejudice and discrimination
