fitness in minimal time with maximum enjoyment, could be the solution. Founded in California by former US gymnast Greg Glassman, it’s based on ‘constantly varied, high-intensity, functional movements.’ Workouts are varied because they involve everything from running to weight training, and use daily variations in repetitions and sequences to keep them fresh and challenging. They are ‘high-intensity’ because sessions typically last no more than 20 minutes. And they are ‘functional’ because they condition you for everything from climbing to running. The result is that these workouts can simultaneously build leg strength to boost hill running performance, tighten abs for improved swimming biomechanics and develop upper body strength for superior mountain bike handling, whilst improving heart and lung strength too. Some CrossFit athletes attend CrossFit gyms or ‘boxes’, which are now springing up across the UK courtesy of sponsorship by Reebok, to tackle daily group workouts with a dose of camaraderie and competition. Others log on to crossfit.com for the free daily ‘Workout of the Day’ (WOD) routine and train at home or in their local park. Tom Bold, an instructor from CrossFit Bold in London, has devised the following exclusive workouts to try in your local park. Here’s how to get started…

ifteen minutes. A quarter of an hour. A third of a half of football. That’s the ridiculously small amount of time it takes to prepare your body for the “unknown and the unknowable.” Welcome to CrossFit, the new American-born training regime delivering significant performance benefits to runners, mountain bikers, triathletes and all other outdoor athletes if it’s added to weekly fitness regimes. Using fast, fun, full-body exercises, CrossFit is the ideal conditioning tool for multi-sport athletes who train in the great outdoors. Developing your muscle strength, speed, core or flexibility will sharpen up your performance and slash your risk of injury. So why do so many athletes simply not bother? Firstly, it can be tough to decide which element to focus on, especially if you take part in several sports. Would a hill runner who also enjoys mountain biking gain more by targeting their leg strength, agility, balance, power or speed? Secondly, who has time to perform individual weight-training, plyometric, flexibility and cardiovascular sessions every week? And thirdly, repetitive training drills can be dull, like nightmarish school PE lessons. However, CrossFit, a strength and conditioning programme which promises to build full-body, functional

THe TeST I tested all three of these bikes on the demanding roads of Dorset, and on a combination of flat and undulating roads in the New Forest. The test route allowed me to examine every facet of the bikes’ performance, from corner exits, descents and climbs to their effectiveness while being ridden flat-out on level ground.

Buying a Bike purely for racing is a leap, especially when it’s a time trial bike. But even though the machinery used by the pros could cost £10k, the next step for the club TT rider or triathlete who’s graduated from a road bike is a pretty affordable bike for competition. The three we’ve tested are sub-£2,000 racers, suitable for 10 to 100 miles. a dedicated TT bike differs to a standard road bike in terms of its aggressive geometry and riding position, and takes some getting used to. These bikes aren’t built for comfort, but any nod towards longer distance rideability scored bonus points with us. The key to getting the best from your TT bike is strength, efficiency and a strong core so that you can maintain the same position for long periods. The payback is performance. an aerodynamic riding position will pay dividends, grinding out a big gear for prolonged periods both in training and in races will make you stronger, while marginal gains can also be had from lightweight wheels, aero components and a solid disc rear wheel. if you’re serious about speed, there’s no substitute for a TT bike…

l bring you the very best... I WAS THERE… Paul Baruzzo, 53, from Grenoble Bike: USA 1925 “My USA is the latest addition to my collection and I am happy to be riding it here in the 75km race. I love L’Eroica and come each year – it is a great event. I have nine vintage bikes; they’re much more fun than the modern bikes I used to ride.”

Wheels

No carbon frames, no clipless pedals, gear shifters on down tubes and Chianti and cake replacing isotonic drinks and energy gels at the feed stations…

Why change your wheels?

There’s a very strong chance that the wheels that came with your bike are the weak link in your set-up. Even bikes that cost £2-3,000 often only come with £2-300 wheels as standard. Wheels at this price point should be robust, but they are also likely to be relatively heavy which means they’ll feel sluggish – especially when accelerating quickly or on climbs. Consequently for the general rider, the biggest performance return on investment in a bike upgrade is going to come from a lighter, stiffer set of wheels. These will spin up to speed more quickly, climb better and potentially offer some aero advantage. And let’s face it, who doesn’t want to ride faster for no extra physical effort?

Welcome to the heroic and historic Italian cycling event for pre-1989 bikes only

What to look for

The choice of wheels on the market is exhausting and there are hundreds of factory made wheels to choose from, without even considering the option of hand-built wheels where you choose the rims, spokes and hubs. So where to start? Firstly, consider what you hope to gain from new wheels and the sort of terrain you’re likely to ride over. Don’t be unduly swayed by wheel weight. What really matters is the weight of the rim – the lighter the better to minimise the rotating mass, especially when climbing. Two wheels that weigh the same could have a 50g difference in the rim, which you’ll notice when the gradient ramps up. Conventional aluminium wheels can be very light (ideal for hills and mountains) and very strong (ideal for cobbled routes), and tend to be much cheaper than their carbon aero equivalents. Their braking surface is also more secure and reliable for long and fast descents. Deep section or aero wheels will, as their name suggests, cut through the air more efficiently by creating less turbulence than the blunt shape of a conventional rim. This reduces the effort

’Eroica, italian for ‘the Heroic’, is a name well known within the sportive world, but is an event many know little about. taking place on the first weekend of october, it has no high mountains and doesn’t even give riders their finishing position. this unique italian event focuses on the celebration of vintage cycling, offering a very different challenge for the eclectic mix of cyclists who take part. taking riders through the lush green vineyards of chianti on sections of Strade Bianche (‘white roads’), all those who finish are dubbed ‘the heroic’. it’s 5am on Sunday morning in Gaiole, chianti, a town 50 kilometres south of florence. the first groups of riders are already starting their l’Eroica. these groups of 15 to 20 riders, part of over 4,000

entrants who have flocked to this small tuscan town, excitedly head out into the pre-dawn darkness lit by lED lights. there is already a flood of cyclists in the town’s central piazza making it look like a page from a cycling history book. all the riders are filled with the spirit of vintage cycling. clad in woollen jerseys, with goggles and spare tyres looped over their shoulders, they shout and joke with pre-ride excitement. Men and women, young and old, l’Eroica attracts riders from all walks of the cycling world. the event has four different distance courses to suit all these riders, 205 and 135km for the serious, 75 and 38km for the rest. there are just four enforced rules at l’Eroica, which have been at the heart of the event since it was created by Giancarlo Brocci in 1997. all bikes are 8

required to attain and maintain the same speed. Deep rims are also typically stiffer than conventional rims and therefore need fewer spokes, which saves weight and reduces drag. The streamlined deep rim that acts as a fairing behind the tyre does, however, require extra material just where you don’t want it, so to keep weight down most aero wheels are made from either a mixture of aluminium and carbon fibre or all carbon. Although very light, the braking surface on completely carbon fibre rims is not as good as aluminium rims – especially on long descents or in the wet. Finally, some light wheels come with a maximum rider weight, so check before you buy.

Tubular or clincher?

A tubular or tub is a tyre lined with an inner tube and stitched closed. The complete tyre and tube are then glued or taped to a specifically designed tubular rim. Tubular wheels are lighter than their clincher equivalents and tubular tyres can run at pressures of up to 200psi, allowing for lower rolling resistance. On the flip side, they are pricier than clinchers and not easily repairable at the roadside. Ideally you need to carry a whole spare tubular tyre with you when you ride. Tubular wheels feature heavily among professional riders who get a new wheel from their team car if they puncture. For most of us who don’t have the luxury of a support car, the common clincher is more practical.

RECOMMENDED CliNChER whEEls

AmericAn clAssic sprint 350, £500 Just out of interest we pitted this set against some of the aero wheels in a time trial and the Sprint 350 performed very well. This good looking set of wheels is impressively light (1,475g) when compared to other wheels at this price point, yet still has a maximum rider weight limit of 100kg. The low weight was noticeable when climbing and accelerating quickly and these wheels would make a great upgrade for anyone looking to get into racing.

Mavic R-SyS SL £1,500

Testing

Before and after testing we weighed the wheels and checked the spoke tensions to assess quality. For the aero wheels our testing included timed efforts on our local time trial route. All wheels were then tested on our most challenging local hills to consider all aspects of ride quality and performance. * Note that all wheel weights exclude quick release skewers, cassette, tyres and inner tubes

Mavic’s top of the range clinchers stood up to a week’s testing in the Alps. Pricey but great

shimAno DurA-Ace c24 tubeless, £800 These tubeless (not tubular) compatible wheels are Shimano’s top-end road wheels and our pair weighed in at 1,529g, putting them on a par with most clincher wheels at a similar price. Ride quality is very good, especially with the Hutchinson Fusion 3 tubeless tyres we’d fitted. Stiffness is great thanks to the carbon fibre laminated rims. They have no rider weight limit and are also suitable for cyclo-cross, making them the perfect all-rounder wheelset. madison.co.uk

We took these wheels to the Alps to test their climbing abilities, and after a week of endless ascents we can confirm their mountain eating prowess. A common sight in the professional peloton, theses state of the art wheels use a combination of tubular carbon fibre spokes (and aluminium bladed spokes on the drive side of the rear wheel) that work both in tension and compression. They are also exceptionall y light at 1,295g, yet deliver confidence inspiring stiffness and handling, plus excellent braking on long alpine descents where speeds of 50-60mph are quite easily achieved. mavic.com AUGUsT 2012 outdoor fitness |

WITH THE F1 race starting at 5pm, the drivers are at a loose end. They aren’t needed at Melbourne’s Albert Park circuit until lunchtime, so a group of them take to the great outdoors. Nico Rosberg and Jenson Button go swimming in the sea; Fernando Alonso, Timo Glock and Mark Webber head out on their road bikes (Glock completing a 50km ride); Lewis Hamilton and Bruno Senna run along the banks of the Jarra River. It isn’t a surprise to learn that drivers take exercise on race morning; such are the huge demands of driving grand prix cars that training is the driver’s default mode. But it’s a shock to learn that so many of them head to the great outdoors to get their heart-rates up, when it would be easier to hit the hotel gym.

deNiSe LeWiS Lewis suffered severe irritable bowel symptoms for 13 years, but several doctors diagnosed stress. it wasn’t until she ran a test that she discovered she was intolerant to several foods, including garlic. She kept a food diary but still had severe symptoms. A YorkTest then revealed her to have intolerances to milk, yeast, eggs and garlic. After modifying her diet she is now symptom free, though she has said that she wishes she could have worked it out sooner.

F1TTEST? “I get bored if I spend too much time in a gym though,” counters Rosberg. “There are certain exercises that have to be done in there, like the neck, but all the cardio work can be done outside, which is more fun. Especially in Australia, where the weather’s great!” Rosberg’s passion for swimming, running and cycling has inevitably pushed him towards doing triathlons. He does all of his training near to his home in Monaco: he swims in the Mediterranean; he cycles in the Alpes Maritimes (the hills above the Principality); he runs along the sea front. He’s modest when describing his ability, and it’s difficult to draw any conclusions from the results sheet. At the end of April he contested the Tristar Triathlon in Cannes, but came continues over>

Falling with grace “A life lived in fear is a life half lived,” says Cliff Diving World Champion Gary Hunt. The Southampton-born 28 year old is a former Commonwealth diving medalist from the 10m board, and excels at the 27m drops of cliff diving. “My training methods vary,” he says. “I always do a lot of plyometric exercises (designed to produce fast, powerful movements) to maintain a quick jump reflex, and I do a lot of stomach and leg exercises such as squats and pike-ups.” The other vital part of his training is stretching: “I do it before and after every workout to avoid being sore the next day and to work on my pike shape and flexibility.”

ClIff DIvIng WorlD SErIES You’ve got three seconds and 27 metres of freefall to twist and flip before you hit the sea feet first at 85mph. Welcome to the insane world of cliff diving, where the planet’s finest divers display incredible gymnastic skill and bravery. Each dive is scored one to 10 for take-off, position in the air and water entry by a panel of judges that includes four-times Olympic gold medal winner Greg Louganis. The reigning champion is Gary Hunt from England, and this year the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series comes to the UK on its world tour through Europe, North America and the Middle East. Inis Mór on the Isle of Aran, west of Ireland, will be hosting the series on 3rd–4th August, before proceedings move to Abereiddy Blue Lagoon near St David’s in Pembrokeshire on 7th-8th September. redbullcliffdiving.com

CrossFit is the ideal conditioning tool for multi-sport athletes who train outdoors

Fitness Plan Words Mark Bailey Pictures Stuart Collins

get total Fitness Fast Strengthen your body for any sport in any terrain with these high intensity CrossFit workouts. In as little as 15 minutes, you can make a massive difference to your whole body fitness

F

ifteen minutes. However, CrossFit, a strength and conditioning programme which promises to build full-body, functional

fitness in minimal time with maximum enjoyment, could be the solution.

EntEr a 24-Hour mountain bikE racE Micro-adventures are not just for those who enjoy camping – the concept applies for anyone with a willingness to try new things. It was in this spirit that three friends and I decided to enter our first ever mountain bike race together. But we wanted a race that would stretch us out of our comfort zone. So we entered a 24-hour race. In mid-winter. In northern Scotland. If you are looking for a weekend fix of fun, challenge and endurance, you cannot beat the notorious Strathpuffer. You can race in a team of four, as a pair or solo. For 24 dark, cold, tiring hours we raced round the beautiful, challenging circuit. It was icy and muddy and difficult. While the rest of Britain enjoyed their Saturday night in the pub or snuggled in front of the TV we pedalled as fast as we could, powered by pork pies, round the single-track circuit. I loved the hours of darkness, despite being knackered and cold. I had never mountain biked in the dark before, but the experience of riding as fast as I could in the small pool of light from the bike lights was extremely exciting. Doing something new and difficult, in a beautiful landscape, with friends: a long race like this is the perfect weekend micro-adventure. Britain has loads of events like this all year. The rewards are a small price to pay for being so stiff that you can hardly walk up the office stairs on Monday morning.

Stretch yourself and try a 24-hour mountain bike race one weekend. it beats Saturday night telly any day

believe it or not, a trek of the m25 can uncover some surprising beauty. Just not this bit

No carbon frames, no clipless pedals, gear shifters on down tubes and Chianti and cake replacing isotonic drinks and energy gels at the feed stations…

Welcome to the heroic and historic Italian cycling event for pre-1989 bikes only Words & Pictures Phil Gale

L

Men and women, young and old, l’Eroica attracts riders from all walks of the cycling world. the event has four different distance courses to suit all these riders, 205 and 135km for the serious, 75 and 38km for the rest. there are just four enforced rules at l’Eroica, which have been at the heart of the event since it was created by Giancarlo Brocci in 1997. all bikes are
