April 2017 CULT COOKBOOK: GOOD CLEAN FOOD BY LILY KUNIN April 03, 2017 “I BELIEVE IN NOURISHMENT,” SAYS LILY KUNIN OF CULT BLOG CLEAN FOOD DIRTY CITY. “Whether you are going for a detox dish or restoring dish, you’ll find that many of my detox recipes are actually warm, satisfying, and filled with tons of nutrients.” In that spirit, the blogger-turned-cookbook author’s new vibrant tome Good Clean Food is full of recipes that seek to nourish whatever your body is craving in that moment whether it’s a grounding grain bowl or a bright zesty smoothie. Below, we caught up with the queen of smoothie bowls who talked navigating a Manhattan kitchen without a dishwasher, her biggest crowd-pleaser recipe and why her beauty cabinet and kitchen cabinet have become one and the same. What ingredients or principles in your opinion makes for Good Clean Food? It means eating really delicious, satisfying food that is also good for you. It’s about tuning into your body and how it feels and nourishing what it needs in that moment. On a sunny spring day that may mean making a gorgeous arugula + roots salad or on an under-the-weather-day it may mean making a big pot of red lentil earth curry. That’s Good Clean Food. In your opinion, what three tenets make for a detoxifying dish vs a restoring dish? At one points do you crave either? My detoxifying dishes tend to include ingredients that support the body’s natural detoxification process like dark leafy greens, beets, radishes, lemon, cilantro, hydrating vegetables, while my restorative dishes include healing ingredients like turmeric, ginger, mushrooms, raw honey, seaweed, and fermented veggies. You can’t go wrong with either! What is your favorite recipe in the book that you find yourself making the most whether it’s for yourself or friends? I love them all and my favorite varies with the season and how I’m feeling. I’ve been making my red lentil earth curry all winter long and it’s a big crowd pleaser. With spring just around the corner, I’m making lots of sesame noodle bowls and lentil tacos. What are three things every studio apartment needs to make Good Clean Food? Good Clean Food was born in my tiny West Village apartment when I had two roommates, no dishwasher, and virtually no counter space! You can make so many things with one good pot, a sharp knife, and a cutting board. You outline beans and grains in the book as well as soaking. What is the benefit of soaking grains? Soaking grains unlocks their nutritional power and can make them more digestible. Grains contain phytic acid, which can prevent you from absorbing all the nutrients. Soaking helps reduce the phytic acid, making more nutritious meals that are easier on the stomach. Let’s be honest – this doesn’t always happen – but it can be highly beneficial. You are the queen of making beautiful bowls? What are tips to making a smoothie or grain bowl Instagram-worthy? I love to keep it simple and let the natural beauty of fruits and vegetables shine – like the golden yellow turmeric or the bright fuchsia beets. I love incorporating a rainbow of colors and it’s not all in vain. Eating the rainbow also means you are eating a wide spectrum of nutrients. I like to top my bowls with a special garnish like candy beets, watermelon radishes, microgreens, crunchy sprouts or ruby sauerkraut – which takes it to the next level visually and taste-wise. Snap a photo in natural night and you’re good to go! Bobbi Brown wrote the foreword of your book, did she give you any advice while writing the book? Bobbi has written several books, and I remember worshipping Teenage Beauty as a girl. The message was so important, inspiring confidence in natural beauty (and of course a little makeup never hurt). Today, we share the same philosophy of beauty from the inside out. When you take care of yourself, you feel good and that reflects on the outside. Bobbi has been an incredible support throughout the process of writing my first book and I was happy to contribute all the recipes for her book, Beauty From The Inside Out, which comes out in April! You include many beauty recipes in the book. What is your favorite homemade beauty remedy? My kitchen cabinet and my bathroom cabinet has become virtually interchangeable so it only felt natural to include some of my go-to homemade beauty recipes. My favorite has to be my healing honey face mask – it’s manuka (or raw) honey, turmeric, lemon and a drop of tea tree oil. It’s super healing and anti-inflammatory.

April 2017 Describe your own morning and evening holistic beauty ritual. In the morning, I drink a glass of water when I wake up and warm up some bone broth on the stove. This has made all the difference in my skin. If I have some parsley on hand, I’ll mash it up and drop it in the broth along with a squeeze of lemon (I borrowed this idea from Brodo!) A bit later, I will make a matcha latte with coconut butter, tocos, cinnamon and whatever else I feel like throwing in… along with eggs for breakfast. I love slow ritual like mornings and I always wake up looking forward to my morning latte. Then, I’ll wash my face, alternating warm and cool water, spritz with a probiotic toner, and massage in my favorite face oil. I always remember to dry brush on days I’m feeling a bit more tired than usual and am in search of a natural energy boost. In the evening, I usually need to wash away a day of city dirt and grime so I aim to massage my cleanser into my skin for a minute or so, although on extra tired days this might not happen. I spritz again with my probiotic mist and massage in the same oil as the morning. A few nights a week I run an extra hot bath and soak with a healing honey face mask on. I love Dr. Singha’s mustard bath and CAP Beauty’s Love Bath. Once a week or on nights before a big event, I’ll do Juice Beauty’s Green Apple Blemish Clearing Peel. It makes my skin extra smooth and bright. I’m a product junkie so I’m working on simplifying my beauty ritual – holistic or not – but I think I’m finally getting there! What are three plant-based ingredients you could live on forever? Avocado, mango, and coconuts.

April 2017 6-Ingredient Homemade Anti-Aging Face Cream (or 5 Natural Moisturizers to Buy Instead) APRIL 1, 2017

The anti-aging face cream you use on the reg doesn’t have to be a synthetic chemical science project. In fact, the most effective and truly anti-aging remedies happen to be nature’s most simple and pure ingredients. Mix up this homemade anti-aging face cream and you’ll soften fine lines and moisturize skin, revealing a fresher and younger you.

If you don’t have the time, patience, or desire to make face cream, leave the task to the professionals. Hit your local health food store’s beauty section or peruse online skincare retailers devoted to natural beauty, such as the Detox Market. When choosing a product, check out the product’s ingredients list and make sure you can pronounce all that is listed, unless you encounter the scientific name for something quite commonplace (e.g. jojoba oil can be listed as simmondsia chinensis). Opt for organic when possible. The following five anti-aging face creams are tried-and-true favorites for many of those who keep tabs on the all-natural skincare world. Take your pick!

Juice Beauty’s STEM CELLULAR Anti-Wrinkle Moisturizer

Juice Beauty’s STEM CELLULAR line blends vitamin C and fruit stem cells into an organic resveratrol rich grapeseed base to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Its anti-wrinkler moisturizer is naturally free of parabens, petroleum, propylene or butylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulfates, pesticides, phthalates, artificial dyes or synthetic fragrances. Price: 1.7 fl.oz. $68. *Disclaimer: Help support Organic Authority! Our site is dedicated to helping people live a conscious lifestyle. 8 Tips for Cleaner Greener Beauty Cabinet, Let’s Talk Live #TVsegment April 3, 2017

Hey Mamas, Spring time, at least for today, – hello sunshine and 60-degree weather – is upon us. This season always makes me want to organize and update my beauty cabinet. Except now, I’m not just thinking about a new shade of lipstick or a bolder bronzer. My cleaner greener journey is growing, and I took the show on the road, literally, sharing my finds on Let’s Talk Live DC. If you’ve been following this blog and my Instagram account, you know I’m constantly evaluating and questioning the cosmetics and body products that come across my desk. This segment is all about the little changes you can actually do, not a total revolt against all products that don’t adhere to the “free from” labels. Who’s ready to for a Cleaner Greener Beauty Cabinet? TIP 2 – Buy Nontoxic Lipstick If you are looking to upgrade and make one nontoxic beauty change, my suggestion is lipstick. Why? Because it’s the most reapplied cosmetics idea AND we ingest the ingredients via licking lips, drinking and eating. Make sure your popular go-to lipstick is 100% lead free. If you aren’t sure, based on their website and/or ingredient list, call the manufacture up. Recent science indicates there is no safe level of lead exposure, even though the FDA allows small dosages. Lead is a neurotoxin and can be dangerous at small doses. Medical experts are clear that any level of lead exposure is unhealthy. BRANDS TO TRY: • •

THE ONE THING YOU CAN DO TO GET SUPER-GLOWY SKIN WHILE YOU SLEEP APRIL 3, 2017 The best beauty hacks are those that require the absolute least amount of effort. Running from the gym to a date? Throw your sweat-drenched hair into a bouffant, à la Taryn Toomey. Trying to save time in the a.m.? Opt for the superbuzzy no-makeup look. And if you’re an expert multitasker, there’s a new trend that you’re going to love: overnight beauty. More brands are coming out with masks and creams that work their radiance-boosting magic while you’re catching zzz’s, with products you apply before getting into bed and reap serious benefits by the time your alarm goes off. (Talk about active recovery.) “Your cells—especially your skin cells—get a chance to ‘catch up’ and repair damage that has occurred during your day.” “Nighttime treatments are great for detoxifying and hydrating the skin after a long day of exposure to sun, wind, and chemical stressors,” notes Christopher O’Connell, MD, a Miami-based dermatologist. “It gives more time for your skin to achieve hydration from absorption and for the treatment to draw out toxins.” Of course, the dermis is already doing its rejuvenating thing on its own while you’re sleeping—so overnight treatments just give your complexion an extra oomph. “Your cells are constantly undergoing cellular repair and renewal, but during the day there’s constant UV and toxin exposure,” explains Dr. O’Connell. “At night, your body’s able to rest in a protected environment and your cells— especially your skin cells—get a chance to ‘catch up’ and repair damage that has occurred during your day.” Brilliant. Here are 8 superstar products for your best beauty sleep ever. Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Anti-Wrinkle Overnight Cream, $68

With fruit stem cells and flower extracts that are actually the most active at night (I’m talking evening primrose and sacred lily), this cream is designed to work wonders as you’re getting shut-eye. Sweet dreams, indeed. It’s not beauty sleep if you’re not actually getting enough of it—these are the 5 signs that you’re having restful zzz’s. And make sure you and your partner are compatible snoozers.

April 2017 FACE OIL VS FACE CREAM: WHAT'S RIGHT FOR YOU? APRIL 4, 2017

The face oil vs face cream debate is one as old as time. Maybe not exactly, but we’re ready for some answers. Discover which skincare regimen is right for you with this definitive guide… C O N D I T I O N - S P E C I F I C face oils are having a major moment lately, but face creams are a classic fix: So who wins in the face oil vs face cream debate? This definitive guide from Free People’s BLDG 25 breaks it all down to help us find complexion perfection… Taking care of your skin can involve all sorts of complex rituals but the most basic might be the most important of all: moisturize it well. In fact, dermatologists will tell you this simple habit is super critical, especially during this time of the year when the air is dry and cold (and then warm and humid the next minute). “Every cell and component of our bodies relies on hydration in order to function properly,” says New York City dermatologist Julie Karen, M.D. Without it, your skin’s barrier breaks down, which makes you susceptible to chapped patches but also irritation and allergens—yikes. Another surprising fact: “You need adequate moisture because the enzymes that help exfoliate skin need that water,” says Manhattan dermatologist Sue Ann Wee , M.D. “So if you don’t have enough water, you will not shed dead skin normally—and that’s why people end up with dull-looking, dry skin.” Ok, so bring on the hydration! But what’s your ideal quenching option: a moisturizing cream or facial oil? The latest formulas deliver plenty of skin goodness yet work differently depending on your complexion type. Here’s your cheatsheet to figuring out your skin’s perfect match. GO FOR A CREAM IF… You want to moisturize but also target other issues. Creams are usually packed with “a host of ingredients that address multiple concerns, form acne to anti-aging,” says Dr. Karen. The major function of oil, on the other hand, is to hydrate the skin. If you want brightening agents, skinfirming retinol and plumping molecules along with moisture, a multi-tasking cream can be your best bet. You’re sun-sensitive. “Sometimes oils, because of the way they transmit light, can actually increase penetration of UV radiation,” points out Dr. Wee. If you have eczema, rosacea or just prefer not to have anything shiny on your skin, a lightweight cream can penetrate deeply without any greasy residue. You want moisture that lasts and lasts. Many of the latest creams contain next-level forms of hyaluronic acid, an ingredient that’s naturally found in your body and acts like a sponge to absorb and pull in water. The newest types sink in deeply to slowly release moisture throughout the day—meaning one application can keep your skin protected for hours.

10 Natural Beauty Brands Creating Betterfor-You Products April 3, 2017 Beauty tends to get a bad rap for being superficial. And while we can’t deny that beauty is about looking good, it's also about feeling good—which is why we found 10 brands you can feel seriously good about using. Not only do they create effective products with better-for-you ingredients, but some also give back to charities, use ecofriendly packaging, and source from local farmers. We know labels like "all-natural" and "nontoxic" are a bit murky, since, legally, there's no regulation on these terms in the U.S. That's why we made sure to dive into the fine print and call out how each brand specifically defines those words. Side note: "Organic" is highly regulated and means a brand or ingredient has been certified by the United States Department of Agriculture, indicated by the USDA logo. (No logo? Don't trust it.) Check out these 10 natural beauty brands we're obsessing over.

7. Juice Beauty Juice Beauty was created by a woman looking for effective beauty products she could feel good about using while pregnant. Whether it be skin care or makeup, each product starts with an organic botanical juice base before other organic and natural ingredients are added to get the desired results. Formulated without parabens, petroleum, propylene or butylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulfates, pesticides, phthalates, artificial dyes, or synthetic fragrances, these products are never tested on animals, and most ingredients are sourced locally from West Coast certified organic farmers and manufactured in the U.S. using solar power. As for the containers, they’re sustainable and printed in soy ink. Our favorite product: Phyto-Pignments Light-Diffusing Dust—before there were Instagram filters, there was this. Ultra-fine kaolin, Argan, and rice powders diffuse light, hide blemishes, and absorb excess oil. Use it alone or dust it over your foundation to set. ($30, juicebeauty.com)

The One Ingredient You Need For BabySmooth Skin April 1, 2017

With all the comings and goings of popular cosmetics ingredients, one natural option remains a mainstay for turning back the clock: alpha-hydroxy acids. They work. Alpha-hydroxy acids—AHAs—include three kinds of acids that naturally occur in common foods: glycolic acid, lactic acid, and fruit acids. These light acids can exfoliate the skin, sweeping away the upper layer of dead skin cells and revealing the younger, smoother layer underneath. This can also stimulate new cell growth. Fruit acid Fruit acids include citric acid from citrus fruits. These are the easiest of the AHAs to use for DIY home masks and chemical peels. Try Juice Beauty Green Apple Peel Sensitive ($42) Top tip: Look for products with an AHA concentration of 7 percent or higher for the best results. Doctors often prescribe AHAs at a concentration of 20 to 30 percent, but everyone's skin has a different tolerance for AHAs. Some people tolerate them well and benefit from a stronger concentration for the best results. Ideally, settle on a strength that produces some light initial flaking of the skin that resolves quickly and doesn't cause extended redness or irritation.

April 2017 End Blackheads With These Genius Skin Tricks APRIL 3, 2017

You've seen the YouTube tutorials (google "Blackhead Removal SHOCKING Video" — or don’t), the DIY facial-scrub recipes, and yes, even the little black dots all over your nose in your 10x magnifying mirror. Blackheads are exceedingly common. But, why are they so irksome? "I think it's partly because they feel rough to the surface," says Doris J. Day, MD, a New York City-based dermatologist and author of 100 Questions & Answers About Acne. "There's the idea that blackheads are stuck in your skin — and if you remove them, there's a sense of gratification and relief that they're gone. Blackheads just seem so manageable in that way: You just get them out, and then you're done." That perception couldn't be further from the truth. Getting rid of blackheads — for good — is a process that requires the right products (hello, salicylic acid), a regular skin-care regimen, and sometimes even the help of pros. Ahead, we spoke to Dr. Day about her most effective tricks.

Try a gentle face scrub (we like Garnier Clean + Blackhead Eliminating Scrub) or an at-home glycolic-acid peel (Juice Beauty Green Apple Blemish Clearing Peel does the job and also helps eliminate acne scars) once or twice a week — any more than that is overkill — for an extra boost of exfoliation. Juice Beauty Green Apple Blemish Clearing Peel, $39, available at Juice Beauty.

April 2017 Five All-Natural Ingredients for Acne-Free Skin Because wacky, unpredictable spring weather is like Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride as far as your skin is concerned. April 6, 2017

AS FAR AS MY SKIN IS CONCERNED, the change of season every spring is roughly the equivalent of an endless trip on Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. The combination of environmental allergens, fluctuating temperatures and humidity leaves my pores clueless, confused and angry. And when they get angry, I get zits. But I myself am no spring chicken, so I’ve packed my skincare toolbox with products to treat acne and soothe and re-balance my skin for the summer ahead. And while my love for benzoyl peroxide in a pinch is undying, the best way to clear skin without creating new issues is to focus on natural ingredients that work hard and play well together. When in doubt, start with these five.

Willow Bark Look at any acne-focused product on the shelf and it probably has salicylic acid, a common ingredient to prevent acne by keeping pores clean. But for a natural alternative, seek out lines that use willow bark instead. Salicylic acid is found naturally in willow bark, making it a natural replacement for the synthetic version—some argue that skin reacts better to the real deal than to the man-made compound. Either way, the benefits are big. Try: Juice Beauty Blemish Clearing Serum, $29 at Ulta.

April 2017 Going Clean, Green, and Toxin Free: A Natural Cosmetics / Makeup Guide April 9, 2017

And……Natural Makeup and Natural Skincare part two. If you've been following along on social media (or read last week's post about all natural skincare), then you're up to speed. If not, a little backstory. A couple months ago, I decided to do an experiment. I decided to use ONLY natural makeup and natural skincare for thirty days. Why? Because I started to research the toxins in my makeup, and it sort of freaked me out. Now, I have to be honest…..I'm definitely not an all natural type of person. In fact, I was pretty sure that any product I tried would be less effective than my previous beauty favorites. Well, I'm happy to say…..I was wrong. I tested over 60 all natural makeup and all natural skincare products…..and found some that I LOVE. In fact, I built a full all natural makeup and all natural skincare guide (see it HERE). In the guide you can see ALL the products that I recommend, they're even coded so that you can if they're vegan, cruelty-free, EWG verified or under $25. MY DAILY ALL NATURAL COSMETICS ROUTINE While there are a LOT of products I loved, I wanted to share the natural cosmetics I used (and still use) each and every day………these are products that I'll be buying again and again. 1.

Juice Beauty Illuminating Primer: Primer was one of the products I was convinced I wouldn't find. I usually apply makeup at 6 am and expect it to last until the school day is over…..so primer is KEY. And this one by Juice Beauty? Totally surprised me. It also adds a hint of illumination without looking too glittery.

For the full line of products that I tested and loved (including pricing info, ingredient ratings, even which are EWG certified…..) check out my Natural Makeup and Natural Skincare Guide!

It seems that green brands are carving out a significant place for themselves within the beauty industry. Many eco friendly beauty junkies are beyond happy about these natural and organic products. Over the past few years, green beauty has become less of a niche market, as many consumers have become aware of what goes into their makeup. Many of the green brands have also made a conscious effort with regards to branding, scents and packaging of their products which have also made them more popular. With April marking Earth Month, we’ve rounded up a few green makeup brands to keep an eye out for now. Juice Beauty: Juice Beauty has recently upped their game by recently collaborating with actress Gwyneth Paltrow. This beauty line has been developed with a commitment to health and sustainability. How-To: Get GP’s Easy Everyday Makeup April 3, 2017

Don’t talk about faces being canvases to be primed with Dick Page; one of the top makeup artists working today and the artistic director at Shiseido, Page comes at the “natural,” “just-woke-up-like-this,” “office everyday” look from the opposite direction, starting with eyes, moving to cheek and lip color, and only then addressing the skin. “You get a little definition at the eye, and a little color in the lip and cheek—then you go in and see if you need anything else,” he says. “Not the other way around.” At one of our goop Label shoots at GP’s beach house, Page showed us precisely how easy—and how gorgeous—this approach is. “It’s sort of the opposite of those pile-everything-on YouTube videos,” he says. “I love to watch them—they’re sort of a like reverse autopsy, you know? But the volume of material going on those faces, my god. This…well, it’s definitely not that.” Page doesn’t so much have a particular aesthetic as he does a sense of adventure and curiosity that plays out in his work and his life (here’s a cooking lesson he gave us last year; check his Instagram @dickpageface for brilliant recipes, travel inspiration, makeup of course, and the cutest dogs on earth). Like an outfit that can be dressed up or down, this makeup is flexible. “Ask yourself, what’s my day like?” says Page. “I have a friend who talks about makeup on a sliding scale—it goes from ‘Don’t leave the house,’ to ‘You’ll do,’ to ‘Presentable,’ to ‘Okay, then!’ and so on. No matter where you are on that scale, it’s not about a lot of edges, or anything graphic, it’s about softening, no stress.” Below, the beyond-easy elements, and how to approach them.

Eyes As you see above on GP, Page doesn’t always recommend mascara. “Maybe I missed the meeting, maybe the pages of my manual were stuck together…but I don’t think you always need mascara,” he says. “It shouldn’t be this ‘have to,’ desert-island thing. Instead of mascara, you can go in with a dark brown/chocolate or black eyeliner pencil, like Shiseido Smoothing Pencil, and just muscle it into the base of the lashes. It’s about definition and setting a tone—it might be all you need. You could also use a cream liner and a brush (rather than a pencil). I love to work with brushes, but lots of people love a pencil—either works. Wipe any extra off, and then you’ve got it: A little definition and tone, and you might just stop there.”

No sharpening required: simply twist up to reveal more (intense, ultra-flattering) color. “If you want to go further, then maybe put a gentle curl in the lashes—not a full-on bent angle in the lash, just a little soft curl. Then if you want mascara, great: You’ve already got the liner, so you don’t need to layer on coats and coats of mascara to get definition. A single coat of Shiseido Full Lash is perfection.”

Juice Beauty Phyto-Pigments Ultra-Natural Mascara goop, $22 You won’t believe this mascara is as clean, natural, and organic as it is: The intense pigment, high shine, and serious volumebuilding capability rivals that of any conventional mascara. Plus, it leaves lashes lush, long, and feathery-soft without the toxic chemicals commonly used in conventional mascara; the formula is ultra-smooth, clump-free, and it doesn’t smudge or flake. GP’s personal tip: Smooth on one coat, wait a few seconds for it to dry, then build color and length with a second coat for a look that instantly wakes up your whole face.

April 2017 Lips + Cheeks Page loves color—vibrant, red-based color, in sheer or super-pigmented shades. “Somehow we lost sight of real color in makeup,” he says. “It became all about mud colors. I did the Victoria’s Secret show three years in a row, and I was like, these girls need real pigment in their skin. People have gone crazy for all the mud shades, the stripes of contouring—it’s got to be simpler than that.” “People have this fear of red,” Page says. “But used in a transparent way, it makes anyone look good. Use a pinkier one for paler skin, a plummier one for darker skin. I love to use a lipstick, for both lip and cheek—I like cream colors, and when you’ve got the same color on lips and cheeks, it just gives you a little tone. My favorite is Shiseido Rouge Rouge Lipstick in Red Queen. A colored balm works, too—just smudge it on and pack it in. Either way, it takes ten seconds. If you want a little more, use a quick nude-ish pencil underneath. People say, ‘What if my lipstick fades?!?’ And I’m like, ‘Well, you put a little more on.'”

Juice Beauty Phyto-Pigments Satin Lip Cream in Merlot and Cabernet goop, $24 These rich, creamy, saturated lipcolors are made with plant-based phyto-pigments–extracts of basil, rose, aubergine, ivy, moringa, seaweed, and neem, to name a few–for full-on gorgeous color and a smooth, satiny finish. A high-tech, age-defying serum made with cold-pressed organic oils rejuvenates lips and reduces the appearance of fine lines as the pigments leave full coverage and a subtly lustrous gleam.

Juice Beauty Phyto-Pigments Last Looks Blush in Seashell goop, $24 Made with extracts of rose petals and purple carrots, this delicate formula builds to an ultra-flattering, natural flush of color. Plantderived phyto-pigments, Juice Beauty’s age-defying serum technology, and an ultra-moisturizing blend of vegetable glycerin, grapeseed oil, and phospholipids hydrate deeply and leave you with the ultimate healthy-skin glow.

April 2017

Juice Beauty Phyto-Pigments Luminous Lip Crayon in Zuma and Salinas goop, $22 The perfect, faint sheen, gorgeous pigments, and ultra-emollient formula make this jumbo-sized crayon a makeup-bag essential. Rich with phyto-pigments extracted from plants like red seaweed, rose petal, daisy, aubergine, and basil flower, ingredients like cold-pressed organic neem and moringa oils nourish lips, leaving them soft and smoothed; the lightweight formula delivers serious color payoff and the most flattering, subtle shine.

Face It’s only post eye, lip, and cheek that Page works on the skin. “You do the definition and the pigment, and then you have a look: How does the face look? Do you want more pulled-together, or just presentable? You could just stop with the eyes and the color, but if you want to even out the skin a bit, I like concealer. I like to have maybe two shades of concealer, because even if you’re diligent about sunblock, your skin tone shifts with the season—we shot this out in Amagansett, so Gwyneth has a little color—just from being outside, being alive by the beach!” Page says, “When you’re covering up the nasties, you don’t want to go too light, or you’re essentially putting highlighter on them— there should be concealer warnings on concealer boxes: It draws attention to the problem if your shade is too light. You want something malleable like Shiseido Perfecting Stick Concealer, and pick something pretty close to your skin color. Blend a little out at the corners of your mouth, and think about softening around the corners of your eyes, and where it can tend to get red, like your nose.”

Juice Beauty Phyto-Pigments Perfecting Concealer goop, $24 An easy-to-use, miracle skin-perfecter, this creamy, highly pigmented formula conceals imperfections and dark circles like nothing else, allowing you to wear much less makeup overall. The buildable full coverage blends like a dream for a flawless, utterly natural look. Hydrating and smoothing, it works to visibly reduce fine lines as it seamlessy erases dark circles, blemishes, and discolorations. “Remember that if you start to get into full erasure, though, your face ends up looking half done,” says Page. “You just want to get a little of the red out: Think of doing a light-handed grooming, not getting your face on, you know? People get into this fanaticism, they want to get rid of any trace of red near the eyes. And then there’s the mythical horror of the dark circle. It’s always less than you think it is!”

April 2017 Extra Page is not adverse to gilding the lily—if you’re in the mood. “Highlighting—just a dot of it at the inner corner of the eye is a trick we do for photography all the time, but it works in real life, too. I like just a dot of a gold-ish cream highlighter. If you’re really feeling it, you can do a dot at the outer corner of the eyes, just underneath the brow, too.”

Juice Beauty Phyto-Pigments Cream Shadow Stick in Mist goop, $22 This creamy, faintly shimmering, ultra-flattering color is an excellent illuminator for the eye area–highlighting inner corners, browbone, and lids is easy with the precise tip. Plus, it’s infused with Juice Beauty’s age-defying serum technology and moisture powder blend to hydrate and reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles. How much is too much? “It’s really about how you feel,” says Page. “I mean, back in the day, for my mother, a day look was about wearing only a single pair of eyelashes! If you’re looking to survive a brutal meeting, you might want a full face of compact foundation that day, but otherwise—minimize!”

GP’s Easy-Day Tip: When she’s hanging out at her house and not being photographed, GP sidesteps almost all makeup, going with a sheer application of the magically translucent primer from Juice Beauty, which she mixes with her moisturizer. “It’s kind of everything and nothing all at once,” she says.

Juice Beauty Phyto-Pigments Illuminating Primer goop, $36

April 2017 Featherweight and silicone-free, this primer brilliantly combines skincare—organic, antioxidant botanical extracts, cold-pressed organic oils, and juices—with a high-tech, age-defying serum that blurs imperfections, smoothes wrinkles, and leaves a healthy glow for an instantly more flawless complexion. At the same time, it hydrates deeply and controls oil with coconut alkanes and organic glycerin.

The Unstoppable Rise of Clean Beauty and the Celebs Betting Their Careers on the Movement: An Insider's Look April 5, 2017 Emma Watson knows the power of a press tour. Being that she's spent half of her life on the Harry Potter circuit, it makes sense that she's something of a prodigy in global promotion. So when it came time for another mega tour, this one for Disney's Beauty and the Beast, she came up with a genius side hustle.

Her aim? To bring awareness to sustainable fashion and beauty. Her method? She exclusively wore green glam and gowns and showcased all the details of each look on a new Instagram account –a venture that had never been done before in Hollywood. "That's the kind of thing that's actually revolutionary. To go out of your way on that scale, the effect will be a ripple in the industry," reflects celebrity makeup artist Katey Denno. Indeed, while we're already seeing an upshot—Anne Hathaway is currently promoting her latest flick Colossal with only sustainable fashions—it was really Watson's decision to also include natural beauty brands that will surely have a major impact on the clean beauty movement. A Clean Break: "Everything was done from [Emma's] heart and basically it was about healing the beauty industry," says celebrity makeup artist and RMS Beauty founder Rose-Marie Swift. "She's healing the beauty industry by finally speaking up and not wanting a huge paycheck attached, which is amazing."

If you're wondering why more stars haven't been banging the drum for clean beauty, for one, as Swift mentioned, the movement is up against another, more powerful type of green: Money. "A lot of celebrities are hoping they will get an Estée Lauder contract or get signed to Revlon. This is where all the big huge corporations have everybody by the balls—when it comes to being able to pay celebrities or to pay makeup artists. $3,000 to $5,000 a day to do a post—I'm self-financed, I can't do that," explains Rose. Think of it this way: Most clean beauty brands are startups and don't have the financial backing to try and compete against these billion dollar mega-companies that have been titans of the industry for decades. "I think a lot of makeup artist and hairstylists are put in a corner because rates aren't what they used to be and then you've got these big brands offering $1,500 to use their hairspray or whatever," says celebrity manicurist Jenna Hipp, who has been using exclusively clean beauty products for years. "So I see it from the artists' side, we all have to make a living, but I also see it from my side. I had to switch for my health." But it's not all about that paper. Politics also come into play, naturally. Declaring your allegiance to clean beauty isn't like choosing between brands: It's picking sides, because clean beauty is more than a type of product. It's a way of life, a belief that is contrary to what the majority of the cosmetics industry is currently about. It's making an irreversible statement rather than simply being a spokesperson. And although it seems unfair, switching to clean beauty is usually viewed as "slamming the door" on conventional brands, explains Denno. Also, let's keep it real: Although the market is rapidly growing, clean beauty brands don't offer anywhere near the amount of options as traditional cosmetics brands when it comes to products, which can be limiting. So you can see why many celebrities and celebrity glam squad members aren't able or ready to draw that line. Or as another celebrity famously summed up the struggle: It ain't easy being green.

April 2017

The Green Queens There is one clean beauty brand that has signed an A-lister as its creative director. Perhaps you've heard of Gwyneth Paltrow. Juice Beauty, a pioneer company in the organic beauty movement, announced its partnership with the Oscar winning actress in 2015, a pivotal moment for the industry.

"We wanted someone to actually join the company, to be a partner. It was a values choice for her because she knew with her values, she could no longer sign on with the big companies because they didn't have true natural beauty, much less organic beauty," explains Juice Beauty founder Karen Behnke. "So a plus for us were that her values are uncompromising but also that she's well-known for her drive towards excellence and quality."

April 2017 The Goop founder has indeed built an empire on her health-and-wellness suggestions; she's a proven trend starter and her reach and impact are undeniable. So while many were furrowing their brows at a star of her status signing with a lesser known organics company, Gwyneth had already seen the rising tide and made sure she was on top of the next wave. Since signing with the San Francisco-based brand, the 44-year-old has doubled down on the clean beauty movement: Increasing content on Goop.com, releasing a book titled Goop Clean Beauty and even launching her own Goop line skin care line in collaboration with Juice Beauty. There is arguably only one other celebrity who has ascended to that level of entrepreneurial success in the green beauty game: Jessica Alba. A few months after Paltrow coupled with Juice Beauty, Alba expanded her already successful Honest Co.—well-known for their safe, eco-friendly diapers, toys, bath and body products for tots and moms—to also include skin care and cosmetics. A year later she added hair care. According to Forbes, The Honest Co. has an estimated value of around $1 billion. And isn't that the, well, beauty of the clean beauty movement. There is something so personal, so passionate of being a part of it, that celebrities aren't content with just being the face for it, they want to be a force behind it. Because it is more than just a brand, it's a belief. So we've seen Paltrow, Alba and Watson go all in—and it's paying off. Well & Good: OK, but why is it paying off now?

"It really has to do with this whole wellness movement that's happening around the world, people are making better choices for themselves and their family," Tata Harper, founder of her organic skin care line of the same name, explains. "Food was the pioneer in the movement for the longest time. People understand that the most because you put it inside your body while a lot of times people don't realize the things you put outside of the body are also getting in the system." Cut to 2017, when it's cool to be conscious and being "woke" means not just reading the labels on your muffin but also on your moisturizer too. Because as Swift put it: "What is the point of cleaning up one's diet if one is still putting the toxic ingredient onto their skin?" Health is the number one reason women switch to clean beauty. A recent Harris Poll survey discovered that 59 percent of women over the age of 35 say buying green beauty is important to them, while 73 percent of millennial women seek out cleaner, all-natural products. As Jenna Hipp mentioned earlier, she—like most clean beauty brand founders—experienced a health scare and decided to DIY a less harmful alternative. "I was getting nose bleeds, rashes and headaches from working on set with nail polishes—it was horrific!" she shares. "I got rid of everything–I didn't have one traditional nail product in my kit after that. I would use natural face and eye creams for hands and cuticles. And I was bringing in clear coats and mixing in my own nontoxic pigments on set." Eventually, Hipp connected with RGB Cosmetics and launched her own line. Similarly, when Grace Lee was expecting her first child she found herself alarmingly unimpressed by the natural options for moms and moms-to-be. So she created Nine Naturals. "Trying to sell our products early on was tough because women didn't even know of the dangers of a lot of ingredients," explains Lee. "Now with articles coming out all the time, people are a lot more aware." Yes, just like with the food and fashion industry, the dirty underbelly of the cosmetics industry is being exposed as one with very little regulation and lots of synthetic chemicals like formaldehyde or parabens. Even more disturbingly, Europe has prohibited 1,400 cosmetic ingredients, while the United States banned only 11. A Natural Makeover: There is another major reason for the current rise of clean beauty. Although the movement has been around for at least a decade, it recently went through a bit of a renaissance in the last few years.

April 2017 "A little bit of a repair work was needed to the green beauty movement because some of these brands that came out during the beginning weren't really green brands–half the time the stuff didn't work," says Swift. "There wasn't enough color payoff, the texture was terrible. The oils they used were cheap." Denno agrees: "Years ago, when I first switched to green beauty I learned pretty quickly that not all the products would be up to snuff for the red carpet. That and I wanted packaging that was glamourous enough to give to my clients, for touchups or whatever. Women really don't want something in their purse that isn't pretty." But then somewhere along the way, brand founders and chemists got a lot savvier with natural ingredients and packaging, thus brands became more sophisticated and appealing, inside and out. "Tata Harper was the turning point for me," says Denno. "Then RMS Beauty launched, followed by ILIA … And now I think no clean beauty brand is ever going to come to market unless they can compete with that." So Fresh, So Clean: Besides product and packaging, another part of the revamp was in the name. "Clean" is the latest variation and seems to represent the rebirth of the now more streamlined movement.

"Natural has been totally bastardized over the years because anyone can use it as a marketing term, same with green," says Annie Jackson, VP of Merchandising and Planning for Credo Beauty. Words like green, natural and safe have no legal meaning when it comes to cosmetic labeling, which has certainly fueled the mistrust and misunderstanding for consumers. Enter Credo Beauty. Launched in 2015, these clean beauty boutiques—some have christened Credo the Sephora of clean beauty—do not sell any products with ingredients they deem harmful. Not only that, they also promote full transparency when it comes to ingredients, packaging and sourcing. Credo has a list on its site of 23 "dirty ingredients," each with an easy-to-read explanation of why it's considered harmful. "The primary difference is we're very tough on poor standards and dirty ingredients. Women don't need to sacrifice their health in order to use products with beautiful packaging that smell great and work great," says Jackson. "Why should you have to sacrifice all that just because you want to use something that's good for you and good for the environment?" A lot of their brands are pricier than drug store brands, but there's a reason for that. "When you have a formula that is so sophisticated and so high tech—and I know that a lot of us don't see naturals as high tech because they were introduced in supermarkets and apothecaries, you know, very hippie products—but it's really the ultimate luxury to have a product that doesn't have any industrial chemicals and have the best ingredients from around the world," explains Harper, the innovator of the "Farm to Face" movement. "Everything we do is so difficult; it's easier from a formulation perspective to use synthetics. But I don't, because I think that sustainability shouldn't be about gimmicks and marketing. It's really the way to do business in the future and an expected standard." Don't worry, no one is suggesting you toss out all of your old products. Most clean beauty experts say to start with small, everyday changes. In fact, Credo even has a swaps list so if you have been loyal to, say, a Bobbi Brown eyeliner for years, it recommends an Antonym Cosmetics alternative. And if you need even more help trying to decipher dirty ingredients and legit natural brands—well, there's an app for that. Think Dirty allows users to scan cosmetics in the store and the app will provide them with a ranking of all the ingredients, as well as offer a safer, less synthetic option.

"When we launched in 2013, we had 10,000 and now we have 200,000 products," Lily Tse, founder of Think Dirty, shared. "We're in over 33 countries, from Europe to Peru, and we've logged over 7 million scans. People are actively scanning and finding information." Meanwhile, the experts themselves insist that, despite the hype, clean beauty doesn't have to be hard.

April 2017 "I think it's a flexible topic—clean for me isn't necessarily the same as [for] someone else," says Tiffany Masterson, founder of Drunk Elephant, one of Sephora's most sought-after natural beauty brands. "It's very much a personal choice, take it as far as you want," Hipp says. "Anything is better than nothing and your body will tell you what it likes." Or do as Sarah Gibson Tuttle, founder of Olive & June, does: "Every day make one healthy choice that will lead you on a path to clean beauty." And while beauty fads come and go, this is one trend that isn't going anywhere. "There's nothing that is happening in the beauty world in the next few years that is as influential and as intense as the rise of green beauty. Every single day I read about it on publications, it's an onslaught, and it's almost like a joke to me at this point because I've waited for song long with bated breath to see this happening, and here we are," Denno shared with a laugh. "This is not a trend, this is a movement," says Harper. And it's officially gone mainstream.

How to Pick the Right Serum for Your Face These lightweight liquids and gels go on before moisturizer and carry ingredients straight into the skin to fix whatever's ailing you, be it dryness, spots, or lines. April 6, 2017 Choose the Ideal Nighttime Formula We can hear you wondering: Do I really need a whole different serum for evening? Yep, you totally do if you want to rev up your anti-aging results. While brands have put everything from diamond dust to sheep placenta (we kid you not) into serums, experts say you should stick with what's scientifically proven to work, like these all-star ingredients. Know the Basics If you're a serum newbie, here's the deal: These formulas are highly concentrated, so you only need three to five drops for your entire face. If the product is in a pump bottle, "you don't always need a full pump; half a pump is usually plenty for each use," says dermatologist David McDaniel, M.D., director of the Laser & Cosmetic Center in Virginia Beach, VA. Apply your serum on clean, dry skin and pat — don't rub — it in. Now, for the right formula… For Spots: "To even out skin tone, the best ingredients are vitamin C, licorice root extract, kojic acid, and arbutin," says Leslie Baumann, M.D., founder of the University of Miami Cosmetic Medicine and Research Institute. "With vitamin C, choose a serum that has L-ascorbic acid—the most effective form of the ingredient—and is packaged in either an amber-colored tube or an airless pump bottle to keep the vitamin C fresh." Try Phace Bioactive Illuminating Serum ($92; phacebioactive.com). When shopping online, stick with trusted brand sites. "Some third-party retailers store inventory in hot warehouses, and the heat breaks down vitamin C," Baumann notes. For Dry or Irritated Skin: The underlying cause for both issues is often the same: Your skin's outer layer is off balance. To get it back on track, look for a moisturizing serum that contains a humectant such as hyaluronic acid — Baumann recommends Teoxane RHA Serum ($190; lovelyskin.com), which helps skin increase its own natural production of hyaluronic acid. "Glycerin is another great humectant that's very soothing on sensitive skin," says McDaniel. Eau Thermale Avène Hydrance Optimale Hydrating Serum ($38; aveneusa.com). uses a plant-based glycerin plus antiinflammatory minerals to calm ultra-touchy, rosacea-prone complexions. For Wrinkles: Look for retinol or peptides, as both will increase collagen, which in turn fades and prevents lines and keeps skin plump. Retinol can cause irritation on some skin types, so if you're sensitive, look for an oil-based serum. "Retinol absorbs into skin faster when it's in water, so an oil-based formula is often less irritating," says Jeannette Graf, M.D., an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. A time-released retinol serum will also be gentler on skin. Try Robin McGraw Revelation Welcome Back Youth ($38; robinmcgrawrevelation.com). Use An Antioxidant Serum In the A.M. These nutrient-rich blends are for every skin type, because they protect from damage rather than treat specific issues. Along with sunscreen, an antioxidant serum is a strong defense against free radicals, those harmful molecules that are spawned from pollution and UV rays and attack skin cells, collagen, and elastin, contributing to wrinkles, spots, and sagging. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals so they can't do their dirty work, and since there's more than one type of free radical, "your best bet is a serum that contains a cocktail of potent antioxidants," explains McDaniel. Two of the most effective are vitamin C and vitamin E, which together work especially well at fighting the free radicals caused by UV. Dermatologists often recommend SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic ($163; skinceuticals.com); we also like Juice Beauty Antioxidant Serum ($48; juicebeauty.com). And McDaniel is a fan of Dermarché Labs Biorewind AM Serum ($125; demarche.com), which mixes vitamins C and E with other top-notch antioxidants.

3 Natural Makeup Lines Compared April 3, 2017 The personal care industry is still fairly unregulated, and makeup is one of those things many of us ladies use daily without always thinking of the adverse effect it could have on our health. My team and I decided to do some research and put several natural makeup lines to the test to see if there was a way to upgrade our makeup so we can feel beautiful without sacrificing our health and safety. For a long time, I had a stigma about natural makeup brands. I felt that they didn't work as well as the conventional brands and I wouldn’t feel as good using them.Truly it was the last thing to go holistic in my life and in the interest of full disclosure, I still use conventional mascara and eyeliner because I haven't yet found natural substitutes that work as well.Nonetheless, my switches have been made. We all have to commit to a personal care product safety standard that goes beyond what is legally required in the United States. JUICE BEAUTY Available online or nationally at Ulta Beauty or Pharmaca A California-based organic, plant-derived line that uses fruit stem cells, moisturizing cold pressed oils, and botanical waxes/powders rang in for our top 3. Our favorites included: Cream Blush: They use phytopigments from plants instead of artificial dyes. Our make up artist used it live for a “last looks” blush. Luminous Lip Crayon: A little lip liner and lip crayon and you’re good to go! Flawless Serum Foundation: We loved how this was a combination of serum and foundation all in one. Makes life simpler (and cheaper)! The bottom line is that we have choices and we should exercise them. The natural beauty industry has evolved to the point where there is no reason to sacrifice health for beauty. These lines work just as well as the high-end brands and are often a bit less expensive. At the very least, I encourage you to upgrade your foundation (if you wear it) and your lipstick or lip gloss, because anything you are putting on your face is getting absorbed and you are eating whatever is in your lip products.
