New ingredient materials added to coated seed We have made the coated seeds even more user friendly and effective by adding humic acids and a Bio-Stimulant. Coated Seeds Coated seeds can be distinguished visually from naked seeds, because of their higher weight and different colour, the shape of the seeds does not change. The higher weight also provides for a better and more secure ground contact and therefore provides a higher growth rate than normal seed. The purely biological components of the coat are non toxic to birds but also not attractive for them to eat.

Advantages of Coated Seed compared to naked seed Coated seed is a huge step forward in seed application and is suitable for most situations. The controlled, secure and trouble free application of the seed is vital. The advantages of this innovation are valid particularly for small inhomogeneous seeds and also for seed mixture whether the seeds are sown by hand or machine. On difficult surfaces like embankments, highland areas and other hillside situations the need for soil cultivation and preparation is reduced. There is a higher grain weight of coated seed (1000grm). When the seeds are sown, even in windy weather it will fall in a straight direction whereas the naked seed will fall in an uncontrollable and inconsistent way on to the surface. The higher weight also provides for a better and more secure ground contact and therefore provides a higher growth rate that normal seed. The purely biological components of the coat is non toxic for birds but is not attractive to them .This affords the seed a natural protection from birds. The coating of the seed also guarantees no losses or disease due to fungi.

Coated Seeds Elements Taken From Nature To Give A Better Start To Life

Effect of the coating Coated seeds are effective due to the germination and the juvenile development of young seedlings. An important role for germination is the increased water admission when the coating swells. The coat surrounding the seed absorbs water which provides for a secure germination and with it a secure start for the plant. The root development is substantially more distinctive in comparison to naked seed and is more intensive. The higher 1000grm grain weight of coated seed in comparison to the naked seed ensures a more secure seed/ soil contact. Due to this advantage the coated seed can be reseeded in an existing lawn surface. Naked seeds would germinate on the sheets or stalks lying on the vegetation surface and they would then find it difficult to survive. Opposite to this, the coat which surrounds the grain has an immediate and important protective function. With sufficient irrigation, the coating which is storing the water now delivers the water bit by bit to the seedling within. This therefore prevents dehydration of the seedling. Though naked seeds germinate faster they are exposed to the danger of drying up after the germination because of water shortages.

Future Coated seed is the future. It allows and increases the ability to use on a variety of surfaces and in extreme situations, it minimises soil cultivation requirements and provides for a reduction of irrigation, as well as the coating giving a controlled application of fertilizer and plant protection agents.

What is humic acid? Humic substances can be found in all soils and waters and arise from vegetable decomposition. A fertile soil contains maximum 3 % peat and about 3-10 % humic acid. In a certain layer, which has not reached the stage of brown coal yet, you can find them in a concentration up to 85%. This soft brown coal layer is called internationally “Leonardit”. Since the discovery of high concentrations of humic acid in this soft brown coal layer it has drastically raised their commercial viability. The humic acid stimulates the cell membrane as well as metabolism activities and thereby raises the germination rates. Also important plant enzymes are stimulated immediately. The strong root development supports the nutrient uptake capacity. The strengthened grass is clearly less susceptible to diseases.

Humic substances can be found in all soils and waters and arise from vegetable decomposition. (Moor ➜ Peat ➜ (Leonardite) ➜ Lignite).

The effects of Humic acid –

✓ Enhanced metabolism activity ✓ Stimulation of plant growth ✓ Stronger rooting

Seed treatment with humic acids – double security The technology used in the production of coated seed is a procedure which requires a lot of experience, time and instinct. Furthermore macronutrients and micronutrients are elementary components of a finely coordinated combination of different materials. Humic acids are introduced in a highly concentrated form which has 2 steps in the process. Firstly they are brought directly into contact with the seeds and are then integrated again at a later stage in the outer layer of the coating.

Humic acids: Humic acids come into direct contact with the seeds, before they are coated with several nutritious layers. The grain is subjected to an intensive treatment (vaccination) with a highly concentrated humic acid solution. This method has the following effects:

The cell membrane as well as metabolism activities are stimulated and therefore increase the germination rate.

The nutrient uptake capacity is increased and promotes therefore the growth of the seedling.

The sugar and vitamin content are raised

The activity of the seedling is promoted when a lower susceptibility to diseases is given.

Seed treatment with humic acids have following effects: ✓ Enhanced nutrition uptakes ✓ Faster germination ✓ Quicker establishment ✓ Promotes root development of the seedling ✓ Reduction in the susceptibility to pests and diseases

Water Absorbing Seed Process

Seite 21

The first lawn with complete care - thanks to WASP absorber Besides light, temperature and oxygen, water is the most important factor for the germination process of grass plants. Water is not only involved in the basic processes but is also the elixir of life. Without water there would be no germination, no growth and therefore no green areas. With this in mind isn’t it better to supply the seedling from the outset with water and the nutrients it requires? With the development of WASP this idea of optimizing the water around the seedling at a very early stage has been realized through the absorber coating. From the coating of nutrients and absorber, coated WASP seed absorbs more humidity than naked seeds, this is now available to the young seedling through the coating. This is due primarily to the super-absorber in the coating which serves as a water reservoir. Water is stored in the coat and is available to the seedling as required. Besides raised water receptiveness, an increased nutrient uptake is also guaranteed to the seedling.

The Process

Water contact

Soaking/Imbibition

Germination

Seedling

It comes to the first and most important step of the germination process: the swelling. The seed releases reserved nutrients and enzymes are activated. The seminal bowl (testa) bursts and the germ root (radicle) develops. The young seedling starts to grow. From this time the young plant begins the process of photosynthesis and takes up nutrients from the coating.

WASP also grows under extreme conditions. (Trial results) Within a greenhouse, WASP as well as traditional naked seeds were sown in quartz sand. Through a series of experiments the seeds were put through extreme climatic conditions like water stress, high temperatures and strong rays of the sun. The aim was to observe in particular the growth behaviour after germination. From the 9th day the growth increase of both seeds were determined. The naked seed could not stand up to or overcome the extreme climatic conditions, they dried up and died. WASP was able to store the small quantity of humidity better and stood firm to the extreme conditions.

Fresh appearance – maximum protection The germination process of grass depends basically on four factors; Water, light, temperature and oxygen. Insufficient water supply and easily permeable soil is often the reason for newly germinated seeds drying out irreversibly. Now with the world´s first WASP coated seed with super absorber, we can offer a Start Up complete care package for the seedling with water and nutrients. Advantages amongst other things: ✔ Better germination ✔ Excellent ground cover ✔ Easily identified on the ground ✔ Lower wind susceptibility ✔ Less failures ✔ Easy to sow

Water in the coat The new seed-technology allows us now for the first time to bind water close to every single seed and prevents the germinated seeds from drying out. The absorbent quality of the coat is increased by the water tank around the seedling and prevents the germinated seeds from drying up. The seeds are surrounded by a type of sponge, which supplies the seedling with the water and nutrients contained in the coat. The nutrient coat is preserved until the lawn has established and formed a thick sward. Machine or manual sowing is substantially simplified by the higher 1000grm grain weight of the WASP seed in comparison to traditional naked seeds. Blasts of wind do not destroy the sowing pattern: the seeds remain controlled in their distribution to the sowing surface. The seed soil contact is improved by the increased weight of the seed and the grass sward is thicker and better rooted. This excellent WASP Start Up care can increase the germination of the seeds compared with traditional naked seeds by up to 50%. The actual coating protects the seed even before we consider the content of the coating. In addition the slight red colouring makes it much easier to control the seeding rate and sowing density visually. The nutrients contained in the coating are supplied to the seedling during its initial development after germination. The coating consists of purely mineral and biological components which are safe for the soil and ground water. Nevertheless, birds avoid the coated seeds so when it comes to sowing time the seeds are not lost to birds. All the components of the coating are in tune with each other and are especially suited to the seed. Therefore you can be sure that you get exactly the right lawn seed mixture for your individual required application.

Wildflower Mixtures Maintenance and Care

Wildflower–meadows are permanent and varying Eco-systems consisting of approximately 50 individual species creating a plant family with a different appearance throughout the year due to changes in temperature, soil, light, moisture and invasion by other seeds. Typical for wildflower-meadow mixtures are combinations of grasses, clovers, herbs and flowers giving it its characteristic look. Due to the above-mentioned types of influences some species might be suppressed or disappear for a certain time or totally, others may dominate. This might be influenced even more by mankind, but seldom in a positive way. One should not forget that a wildflower meadow is neither a lawn nor an agricultural surface to be used intensively. Nature is creating itself, so very little care is recommended. Preparation of soil: Dig or turn the desired area of soil. In case of heavy or rich soils it is recommended to add sand (medium to larger calibration). Do not fertilize! Rake the surface so that it is free from weeds and allow to settle. Stones and wood (stems or bushes) may remain on the surface, giving protection to insects and smaller or sensitive plants. Leave the seed bed for approximately 2-3 weeks so that the soil may settle and the weed seeds germinate. The surface should now be raked over several times to a depth of about 2-3cm; any weed growth should be removed. Flatten all uneven patches of the soil. Sowing: When about to sow, manually mix once again the contents to get a homogenous seed mixture. Repeat the procedure as often as possible while sowing. (The seed mixture consists of over 50 species of seeds with different weight, size, form and shape). The mixture may now be sown at approximately 10g/m². The sowing can be done in two operations with half of the recommended seeding rate to allow a better distribution of the various seeds. Do not seed too densely. If in doubt use sand as a sowing aid. For example, take about one tenth part of the mixture and mix it with about 5 or 10kg of sand in a bucket. (Mix well and spread around, standing in the middle of an area of about 3.5m diameter). Do not forget to mix through the bucket after all three sowing acts, because of the difference of weight between seeds and sand. The sand will also help you to get a visual control of the surface sown already. Avoid irrigation as it only gives advantage to those plants with high water-need, which may afterwards suppress the slower developing species. Save your fertilizer for your lawn or roses and similar plants.

Sowing – period: Two sowing periods are favourable. Early spring or late autumn. Both periods have advantages and disadvantages.

Spring seeding: The Sowing can be done in March or April, when soil temperatures have achieved more than 11˚C; more or less in the same period when your lawn is mown for the first time after winter. Do not forget the soil preparation! The advantage of spring seeding is the flowering period in the same year. The disadvantage is that the pressure of the weeds in spring is high and might influence the development of the more sensitive species. Autumn seeding: The sowing can be done from September to November even at low temperatures. There is not as much weed pressure anymore and the biannual species are flowering mostly in the following year because of vernalisation in the winter months. It is already too cold for germination concerning the annual species, so they will use early spring moisture to develop quickly to get in an early flowering period. Most professionals are using the autumn-sowing period, because of the above mentioned arguments but also because the gardening season is over. Maintenance: The maintenance of a wildflower-meadow is simple; do not do much, be lazy! Fertilising and irrigation are prohibited. One or two cuts during the year are recommended and sufficient. For spring-sowing take the first cut in October or November (autumn cut) after the flowering period. If cuttings are not removed, the plants underneath will suffer or even disappear. The second cut (spring cut) can be taken in early spring depending on the development of the surface. If the meadow is forming a dense surface with a lot of green-material, one cut should be taken down to a height of about 10cm, not lower. It allows the slower growing species more light and space to develop without being suppressed by the quick-starters. Also now, remove the cuttings! If some unpleasant species appear, remove them manually after flowering or when identification of the species is clear and the plant is definitely not welcome. Never use chemicals against weeds in a wildflower meadow.

Development: As already described above, a wildflower-meadow is a permanently varying structure of plants of different families, struggling and competing with each other but also needing and supporting one another. The annual species such as corn poppy, bachelors button, bluebell, birds eye, baby breath, black eyed Susan, marigold, candy tuft, catchfly, cornflower, daisy African flake, scarlet fax, blue larkspur, love in a mist, California poppy, snapdragon, Siberian wallflower, just to name but a few, will flower in the first summer and autumn, some of them even in the second year, than in combination with the biennials and perennials together, such as yarrow, ribgrass, daisy, bellflowers, knapweed, foxglove, bedstraw, St.John’s wort, field scabious, hawkbit, blue flax, lupin, lavender, mallow, chamomile, forget-me-not, selfheal, etc…and of course the grasses and trefoils. After the fourth year the wildflower meadow reaches its final appearance. This means that in the following years no significant changes within the range of species will be expected. The established species will then dominate and leave only few opportunities for others to establish if conditions stay stable. It might be helpful to over-seed every two years with a pure wildflower mix consisting of annuals, biennials and perennials such as the GREENFIELD WILDFLOWER TIN. It refreshes the meadow every year with a new generation of plants showing their typical magnificent colours.

Description Of Varieties The Most Common Grasses

Rye grass Lolium Perenne Red Fescue Fescuta Ruba Creeping Red Fescue Festuca Rubra Rubra

Ryegrass / Lolium perenne Ryegrass is one of the most important varieties used in lawn mixtures. It prefers fresh soil rich in nutrients and distinguishes itself by its fast germination and very quick root development. It forms a thick sward, is very tough and quickly regenerates itself after damage. Rye grass is very well suited to difficult surfaces like football pitches and playgrounds. Red Fescue / Festuca rubra Red fescue grows low to the ground, has a very fine leaf which forms a thick and fine sward. It has a low nutrient demand and can survive longer dry spells. Red fescue is used primarily in front lawns, ornamental lawns and golf courses.

Creeping red fescue prospers in higher, colder situations and also does very well on lighter grounds. The leaf in contrast to red fescue is a darker colour but its uses would be the same as red fescue.

The short creeping red fescue (hair – leafy fescue) is a cross between red fescue and creeping red fescue and develops short subcolour and very fine. It takes its toughness from the red fescue and in addition is relatively tolerant to salt. The short creeping red fescue is used primarily in ornamental lawns and golf courses.

Description Of Varieties The Most Common Grasses

Creeping bent grass/ Agrostis stolonifera The creeping bent- grass spreads by way of a long surface creeping shoot which forms in the knots of the roots. It is able to knit within a sward very well. Under optimum conditions it can be a very aggressive plant. It forms a thick homogeneous sward and cuts very well. Creeping bent grass is used primarily in golf courses and the finest ornamental lawns. Common bent grass / Agrostis capillaries Common bent-grass is a fine dense cultivar. It is slower to establish but has excellent drought resistance. Suited to very fine turf such as bowling greens and golf greens. Tall fescue/ Festuca arundinacea Tall fescue has a relatively coarse leaf and does not fall under the ornamental grass category. Tall fescue is very well suited to dry locations but is also suitable to wet and shady areas. Tall fescue is a very robust grass and hence is often used in difficult rough areas.

All About The New Lawn Sowing New Lawns

Soil preparation is the key to success!

Seven steps of preparation for a new lawn: 1. The ground should be dug up – spade deep. Turning the soil and the green manure plant by digging will lead to humus enrichment and biological fertilization. For additional ground improvement another 4-5 bags /100 sq meters of garden humus can be distributed evenly and raked well. At the same time the ground is also broken up with this action.

2. Rake the seed bed, remove any coarse stones etc and level at the same time. 3. Now the surface should rest from 14 -21 days so the ground will settle and weeds will germinate and accumulate in the soil. 4. After the weeds have established apply a suitable (glyphosphate type) weed killer at own specified application rate. After 7-10 days and the weeds have died, break up the surface again with a rake 3-4 cm deep this will finally remove the weed content. Insure the ground is not too loose, roll the area or tread down with boards.

5. If the surface is not too humid, sow a suitable Greenfield lawn seed mixture using the correct sowing rate steadily from the hand, bucket or mechanical spreader. Lawns can be sown from spring to the end of autumn. Pick a day where there is no rain and very little wind. Gently rake in the lawn seed and fertilizer, roll if necessary. To create the optimum start for the new seeding a special fertilizer (starter fertilizer) should be applied. Gently rake in the lawn seed and fertilizer, roll and if necessary lightly sprinkle with water so that the seeds are protected against dehydration. 6. During the following 3-4 weeks the new sown surface must be protected against drying out. If necessary water. It is important that the sprinkler is set to a fine nozzle so that the seeds do not get washed away and the ground does not become encrusted and hard. The most favourable time for watering is early morning or late evening. 7. When a height of 8 -10cm (hand height) is achieved the young lawn is mowed for the first time. The lawn mower should have very sharp blades; remember the lawn plants are still very young and sensitive. Only the top (1-2cm) should be mowed with the first cut. The following cuts can be made to the desired height of the lawn. Frequent cutting, particularly in the young stage, leads to a thick strong lawn turf.

Weed control

Maintenance

Lawn care: After the successful initial seeding, care is essential for the preservation of the lawn. This is the only way to guarantee a successful, dense, quality lawn that will appear healthy and in uniform for years to come. Mowing, fertilizing, aeration and watering are all to be considered part of the maintenance regime. It is also important to consider the weed control and the treatment of illnesses within your lawn care regime. Mowing: Mowing is not only the most time consuming but is also the most important part of your lawn maintenance regime. Remember when cutting you should not take away more than 30% to at most 50% of the growth of the plant. A frequent mowing along with the right fertilization promotes the formation of a thick, carpet like sward, this is because the grass plants are stimulated to grow. This also strengthens your lawn. When making the decision, when is the right time to cut? Remember that by cutting you should not take away more that 30% to at most 50% of the growth of the plant. If you mow the plant too tight it looses too much green area and finds it difficult to regenerate quickly. In a garden area the cut height should be between 3-5cm. Therefore you should mow at a height of 6-10cm. In the spring, try as far as possible to cut the lawn once a week. Fertilization: The lawn must regenerate constantly and with a lawn cut regularly nutrients on the surface are taken. Therefore the right fertilization is important for the formation of a strong green sward. The lawn is in a constant growth process and requires nutrients which must be supplied by specialized fertilization. The lawn not only needs nitrogen but also a well balanced combination of nitrogen, phosphate, potash as well as magnesium and trace elements. These nutrients assist the construction of the plant and the control of the herbal metabolism along with other functions. Hence the most suited fertilizer is multi nutrient and whose nutrient composition is appropriate for the needs of the lawn. Watering: Provide and ensure your lawn always has enough humidity. Natural precipitation is ordinarily sufficient for it. Should it be necessary to water the lawn i.e. if you are faced with phases of long persistent dryness, the following should be followed: New lawns or reseeds should be watered every 2 days with approx 1-2 1itres/ square meter. Older lawns should only be watered once a week and penetrate up to 20 litres / square meters. It is best to water early in the morning or late evening – never water in full sunlight.

ness. Verticuting (Deep Scarifying):

The most important

For your lawn to grow it needs air and light. Over the course of time and in particular if the cut material is left on the lawn

measures are:

after mowing, a lawn felt develops form living and dead plant material, this should be removed every spring. With verticuting

- Deep scarifying

the lawn felt is torn open on the surface and removed, the broad-leaved weeds and moss are broken down. With the felt dis-

- Top dressing

once a year. Preferably during the main growth period of April / May.

- Over seeding Aerating: Surface compaction is removed and root spaces are ventilated by aerating. Hollow pointed sting like devices are dug into the earth and pull up plugs of up to 10-cm depth which must be then removed. Afterwards the surface is top dressed and fertilized. To be effective at least 200 holes / square meter should be produced. Top dressing: Top dressing with sharply washed sand as a single measure or in combination with verticuting or aerating has the following advantages: • Any uneven surfaces can be evened out • The ground texture is improved • The ground becomes more permeable • Reduces compaction

Over-seeding: If the gaps have become too big in a lawn and will not close by regeneration or if the lawn needs to be refreshed by more valuable newer grasses, then over -seeding is necessary. The over-seeding can be carried out after measures like verticuting, aerating and top dressing. For over-seeding it is advisable to use a suitable coated seed mixture for surface sowing.

Maintenance Soil Improvement

Top dressing: To produce level-ness and to improve soil quality a mixture of sand, peat, soil and fertilizer is required. The sand must be free of lime. The best time to carry out top dressing is autumn, possibly September. A suitable aeration of the soil should also be carried out. If after all these measures you are still having no success in regenerating your lawn, then more far-reaching measures are necessary. This can include: • Create slits • Scarifying

Slit: Approx 100 slits / square meter which are 1cm wide at a distance of about 8cm, up to 10cm deep, 10 – 15 cm long which are made with a specialized slit machine. The tears in the ground lead to the exhaustive relaxation and airing of the surface. However, this can also cause some ruggedness but this can be improved by top dressing. Scarifying: With scarifying a drainage system or more water-permeable layers are achieved with a special device. The slits are filled in the same operation with a permeable material (sand, clay). The excavation must be removed; width, distance and depth of the slits can be varied. The aim is a better aeration of the ground and better water utilization.

It will only be possible to decide which measure is necessary by viewing the site and carrying out an analysis of the ground.

more favourable maintenance option.

1. Cut the lawn as tightly as possible, so that there are only stubbles. Work with a grass collector so that the cut grass is collected and immediately removed. If there is cut grass left on the lawn, rake this to leave the surface clean. 2. Now scarify the surface to disturb the soil and to remove the lawn felt and plant leftovers. Afterwards clean the surface thoroughly so that the lawn seeds will have enough light and air. 3. Greenfield coated seed should be scattered at 30-35g /square meter and rolled. To speed up germination and to prevent the seed drying out, sprinkle the seeds with water

Diseases and Pests Diseases

Diseases Grass like any other plant may be susceptible to attack by pests and diseases. Grass is more resistant and less prone to disease when it is well maintained and is growing well. But even with the best maintenance regime your lawn may still be open to attack. Fungal diseases Lawn diseases are not something that an amateur gardener should unduly worry about. It is often the case that patches which are caused by over fertilization or weed killer are misdiagnosed as a disease. Below is a list of the common ailments in a lawn. Snow Mould Microdochium nivale Season:

Can occur in any season but most common in autumn and early spring

Symptoms: At first small patches of grass turn yellow or orange and then spread out in size and number. The original patch is now a large brown area. The ill grass can be wet and slimy.

Preventative measures: Take measures to reduce lasting surface dampness, eg correct drainage, and increase the aerial circulation. Avoid high- nitrogen fertilizers and lime in autumn. Keep off the grass in frosty weather. Always remove lawn cuttings.

Pests And Diseases

Red Thread

- Red Thread

Laetisaria fuciformis (fr端her: Corticium fuciformis)

- Dollar Spot - Leatherjackets

Season:

Appears in late summer and autumn when mild

- Chafer Grubs Symptoms: This affects fine, slow growing and high maintenance grasses. A spot like damage will appear in the lawn, these have a pink or reddish appearance due to the pin like red growths on the grass leaves. With a strong infestation the grass can die but as a rule the patches recover in spring.

Preventative measures: Nitrogen fertilization should be carried out during the summer months with sufficient dampness to promote growth. Take care that the nitrogen levels are not too high as this can promote the spread of snowy mould again.

Red Thread

Dollar Spot Sclerotinia homoeocarpa Season:

Autumn and spring

Symptoms: A disease again for fine lawns. It forms perfectly circular spots which are separated sharply, the grass in the inner of these spots has mostly died. The brown and yellow spots can spread and join up and cause larger damage to the lawn. Dollar spot can appear in combination with red thread. Preventative measures: Ensure the lawn has a good maintenance regime and a well balanced supply of nutrients and nitrogen.

Diseases and Pests Pests

Pests The two main pests that cause problems in a lawn are leatherjackets and chafer grubs. Both these pests are larvae that feed on the grass roots which cause death or damage to the grass plant. Leatherjackets Season:

Spring and summer

Symptoms: Leatherjackets are the larvae of daddy long-legs. You are at risk if you see a large number of daddy long legs in the vicinity of your lawn, if you have suffered with leatherjackets in the past or if your lawn is thin and pachy. They cause a yellow or brown dead patch in the summer.

Preventative measures: From April – May a leatherjacket pesticide killer can be applied also during the summer a polythene sheet can be laid on the lawn. The leatherjackets will come to the surface overnight and can be removed.

Chafer Grubs Season:

late summer

Symptoms: More common on sandy soils, but leaves the grass in the same condition as above. Preventative measures: It is best to treat in late summer as this is when the grub is closest to the surface. Treatment is similar to leatherjacket with the use of pesticides.
