Introduction Weed control has always been a huge problem on commercial nurseries around the world and now more so than ever. Chemical herbicides are being banned one by one across Europe and if they are not banned then legislation surrounding their application has increased. This has resulted in the very labour intensive hand weeding process becoming more common on most nurseries to clean up plants before sale. Research and development of the ‘Unique Pot Topper’ range commenced in late 2010 to establish a NEW innovative range of products to prevent weeds, liverwort and moss, and reduce labour costs on commercial nurseries. A unique blend of recycled fabrics was established in 2011 and since then trials of the ‘Unique Pot Topper’, both on a Commercial Nursery and at Greenmount Campus, CAFRE, have been carried out. Now 3 years on from the initial trials the ‘Unique Pot Topper’ range has successfully achieved its objective, to prevent weeds, liverwort and moss without the use of any herbicides. Trials are now being carried out into the use of Unique Pot Toppers as an alternative to some pests.
