I’m an author, have always been creative, but apart from a few

watercolour classes some years back, I hadn’t picked up a paintbrush since I was 14. With more time on my hands and feeling that I had a reasonably strong visual sense, I was drawn to explore whether I could develop this further. I stuck a tentative toe in the water and, after floundering around for a while, became fully immersed in the challenging, thought-provoking, awe-inspiring world that opens up the minute you pick up a brush and confront a blank canvas.

I joined one of Paul Fowler’s Pathway to Painting groups because I wanted to go much deeper, not just to improve my skillset and learn different techniques, but to find out what makes a good painting, how to express what we feel and see, and how our unique life experiences colour our work. I want to find my own voice – the voice I have as an author and one that is now a work in progress through a brush.

We began as an intimate, mutually supportive group of four in Paul’s studio, where we talked – and talked! – and experimented and took home projects to work on, ready to present the next time we met. When Covid hit, we continued online, six of us now, three hours at a time. It has been and continues to be life-changing, as we each follow our own paths but joined together with the common purpose of expressing ourselves through art. As our facilitator, Paul is truly inspirational.

“We were asked to consider scale and what the result might be if relative scales were upset. I thought about a refugee child arriving on a beach, finding an empty shell and being able to take

refuge in it. My painting is called Refuge.”

"Piet Mondrian, Toulouse Lautrec, Edvard Munch, Lucian Freud, Alberto Giacometti, Howard Hodgkin, Brancusi, Barbara Hepworth, Victor Pasmore and Luke Jerram are greatly admired influences.

Through fast brushwork, layering of saturated colour, I work to explore space, movement, time. Scale, translucency and opacity also fascinate me. Sometimes when glazing and suffusing colour, I hope that it is almost felt before it is seen."

A journey through life. The power and purity of love, connecting heaven and earth. Trying to convey feeling and emotion. Influenced by Kandinsky’s aim to communicate a sense of spirituality with a pictorial language to express an inner experience.

This is the latest in a series on vertical slums. As a kid I saw my home city of Manchester, it’s centre smashed in the war, have its remaining terraced streets

levelled by the council. It’s close communities were destroyed and grim tower blocks were imposed to loom over an increasingly bleak landscape. I wanted to try and capture all that in a series of paintings, mostly monochrome. This is the biggest canvas at 1 meter

square.

I was scared of paint and colour. Now I paint everyday and have discovered the utter joy of what colour can do.

Nature astonishes me, fascinates me, inspires me. 'Autumn trees' there's a hint of alchemy in the way Autumn transposes them, a final burst of vibrant colour. I endeavour to capture a precious moment in

time, energy, colour and atmosphere. Oil on gesso.

"I think of myself as a figurative artist, normally using life models as a vital ingredient in my work so this task was

definitely a departure from my usual approach. This painting in oils started as a memory of a dark and narrow school corridor and, using a shot of a flooded and floodlit Venice arcade with the water turned orange by the lighting, I used both memory and photograph to create a strange, hopefully oppressive feeling which I hope will

make the viewer feel both slightly claustrophobic and uncomfortable. As a result of doing this small painting I have decided to do a much larger one using these elements as a basis for a story from a Roman myth".
