ounded in 1991 by Renea Abbott, Shabby Slips is the original custom slipcover shop. Over the years, the Houston-based company expanded into manufacturing upholstery and selling fine antiques with many of the pieces being reupholstered before seeing the showroom floor. As the antiques scope of her business broadened, Renea continued to broaden her horizons, traveling and collecting high-quality products from Europe and all corners of the globe. She also added a stop, right here in her own backyard, attending the antiques fair in Round Top. “I started making Round Top part of my business plan every year, because my favorite place to be is a flea market,” Renea says. “Round Top is one of the best places in the world to go on that elusive treasure hunt.” Shopping the fields on that elusive treasure hunt, as she describes, is definitely part of the Round Top experience, but Renea adds that Market Hill brought a more permanent presence to Round Top making it easier for dealers and buyers. “It’s a very comfortable shopping experience, well-lit, climate-controlled,” she says. “And it is a very eclectic mix of dealers and merchandise – old, new, vintage, antiques and period pieces.”
Her collection for the fall show is also sure to be well curated and eclectic. For a peek into her shop and portfolio, visit ShabbySlipsHome.com.

udi Nijssen and wife, Dominique Sente-Nijssen, bring Schwung Home to Round Top. When we reached Rudi by phone for an interview, he was seven hours ahead of us, and on a seven-hour drive with his children in the car. We got disconnected briefly, but when we reconnected he pulled over to chat with us about Schwung Home. We got the impression that this is the life of an antiquing family.
[Rudi] started in the business in the 1990s, and had antiques stores in Antwerp and Brussels.
“My wife [Dominique] and I are both antiques lovers,” Rudi says. “Our wanderlust and passion for antiques takes us all over the globe. We are interested in beautiful things, beautiful designs, and we love discovering different artisans and their crafts. Schwung Home is a family affair. “Our children are 8 and 11. They are with us wherever we go. They obviously see a lot of interesting things,” Rudi says. “Yesterday, we went to a flea market, and I took my oldest son with me. He has developed a passion for antiques. When he sees something he likes, he’s quick to point it out to me.” Rudi tells us that he started in the business in the 1990s, and had antiques stores in Antwerp and Brussels. collection, antique furniture, and unique objects that blend classicism and modernism.
“High Point was chosen, because it’s the furniture capital of the world,” Rudi says. “We are open year-round. We buy in Belgium, Scandinavia, Germany and France. We also have pickers we trust and have used over the years.”
“We’re not really attached to one style,” Rudi says. “From industrial to classic, baroque to mid-century modern, we like beautiful pieces, which keeps it interesting. That’s our joy. Finding beautiful pieces and bringing them into peoples’ homes.”
What you’ll find in their curated 60,000-SF showroom is an eclectic mix of their own European designed handmade lighting
Rudi also sees the bigger picture. “It has something to do with helping save the planet. That these pieces don’t end up in a land-

Our customers know us for always having the best finds when it comes to objects and antiques. As we source on a global level, our customers can count on us as being the hidden gem for found treasures.”

“As we source on a global level, our customers can count on us as being the hidden gem for found treasures.”
When it comes to helping designers find that one special piece, he says the key is truly getting to know their customers. “We really value the relationships we have cultivated with our customers over time. Learning who they are, and what they like, helps us identify pieces we know will work for them.” This will be the first time Schwung Home will have a presence at Round Top. “We are very excited about the opportunity to meet new people who share our passion. The great thing about antiques is that they speak for themselves. Each piece tells a story, carries a history, and people fall in love with its soul. It’s pure joy to give them a new life by integrating them in projects, stores and homes.” As for the pieces he is most excited to show at Round Top, it’s hard for Rudi to remember it all. “We have so many things. We shipped an eclectic selection of our latest finds,” he says. “We are bringing quality pieces that will be very reasonably priced.” We’ll have to wait and see all that’s in store at Schwung Home, as they make their debut in Round Top at Market Hill.

When asked what pieces he’s most excited about bringing to the fall show, he says, “Our passion lately has been with old neons, general store pieces and original surface furniture. This time around, we are bringing some amazing neons that pertain to oil and gas, as well as bar decor. We will have great store counters, tables and seating that fit our eclectic aesthetic perfectly.”
“It’s an eclectic aesthetic that drives us. A mix of original untouched pieces and electronic eye candy.”
As for what we can expect at the fall show, she says, “The car neon was a oncein-a-lifetime find! And, for us, personally, a bucket list item to own. He’s grown up around all of our dealer friends and family. This is one of the reasons we especially love the great, safe set-up at Market Hill.”
When it comes to making these selections for the show, he says, “For 15 years, we have been following our instincts and finding truly wonderful pieces.” It also comes down to really getting to know his customers, he says.
“The majority of our customers are collectors and design industry professionals. Many of our clients have become good friends. By understanding what makes them tick, it helps us get a hold of their design styles, wants and needs. It’s a great feeling to rescue pieces that some might regard as trash and reunite those pieces with our customers who treat them like the treasures they are.”

Architectural Anarchy PHOTOS COURTESY OF ARCHITECTURAL ANARCHY
C
hicago-based Architectural Anarchy is known for its mix of art, architectural salvage, vintage advertising, and antique industrial pieces. Its owners, Gosia Korsakowski and William Rawski are veterans of the industry and are in their fifth year of taking their unique inventory on the road to Round Top. Bill is best known as the man behind Zap Props, the Midwest’s largest prop house. For more than 30 years, Zap has outfitted almost every major production filmed in Chicago. Zap also offers design and fabrication services, and has worked on projects for some of Chicago’s most beloved restaurants. Gosia grew up in Poland, spending her summers abroad, experiencing different cultures and shopping at various flea markets. Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to open an art gallery in college, selling work made by fellow students. After college, she worked in the fashion industry before getting married and moving to the U.S. She started collecting and selling glassware, and eventually making glassware of her own designs. She met Bill while shopping at Zap. In 2010, they went into business together, and the rest is history. Each having their own individual style makes for a dynamic collection – one we always look forward to – at Market Hill.

In making his selections for the fall show at Market Hill, Ender says, “What we sell are components to a good design, each and

every one of those components has to have redeeming qualities – texture, color, shape – and they need to read modern. That’s basically the key to success in today’s design world. Everything is going clean, simple and modern,” he says. “It used to be that to see a good-looking home, you’d have to see it in a publication. Now all we have to do is go on Pinterest or Instagram or Facebook or any other website that is creative, and we

get to see designs from all over the world being shared. That’s pretty inspiring. For people who are creative, inspiration is endless at the moment. The hardest part is when you get inspired, where do you go to find that thing?” That’s where Market Hill comes in. “With Market Hill, first and foremost, we have cultivated some of the best vendors under one roof who work very hard to bring the best of the best they can possibly find, every show, show after show,” Ender says. “These are the leading people who inspire one another and make one another work twice as hard. start with good dealers who understand the business and motivate one another, we have an environment where all of these ideas pour in.” Being able to present his collection in a sophisticated way is also important to him. “We each have an incredibly beautiful showroom with high ceilings and all of these skylights that bring daylight in. It’s the perfect setting to feature our merchandise.” Another benefit of Market Hill is being out of the elements. “When everyone else is being washed away with storms out there,” he says, “we are able to conduct business in a civilized fashion. When I say ‘civilized fashion,’ the profile of our clientele has changed over the years. We all want comfort. Market Hill provides all of those comforts to anyone who is coming to experience Round Top. It gives them a break from the elements, a break from the diversity [of high and low pieces]. ustin-based Amelia Tarbet has been making the trip to Round Top as a buyer since 2005 and as a vendor since 2013. When asked what she loves most about her work, she says, “Introducing people to different types of pieces and helping them design spaces that bring them a sense of individuality. I also love the thrill of knowing that there's always something around the corner that you've never seen before. Having a sense of wonder is really fulfilling to me.” She describes her style, in a word, as “unexpected.” “I love it when I can offer pieces to my clients and know that they probably won't find another piece quite like it. Of course, as dealers, we all have to have staple items, but I really try and mix in one-of-a-kind pieces. I want to give my customers a sense of discovery and wonder that I enjoy so much.” What she loves most about Round Top is “the level of enthusiasm and passion for antiques from both customers and dealers. Anyone who is willing to make the trek out to this small town in the backroads of Texas has got to be really passionate about antiques.” “Like most people who come to Round Top, a lot of my customers are eager about expressing their individuality. I think what makes my customers loyal is knowing that I always try to have something a little different to offer them. There's an element of surprise that I love seeing on customers’ faces every time they enter my space.” When it comes to helping customers find that piece that’s right for them, she says, “Their style can actually range from eclectic to minimalist to even a little traditional. I love helping people find pieces they will enjoy now, but will also resonate for years to
come. Although it’s appealing to have pieces that are on trend, I really try to encourage people to go with pieces that pull at their heartstrings, and then they won't even have to be concerned with what is simply “in” at the moment. I also work with lots of commercial clients with different needs. I love the challenge of exploring different projects and finding just the right pieces to fit them. My individual style is all about following your gut feeling. When you mix all the pieces you are passionate about together, there will naturally be a harmony to them.”

I am not able to do that in other spaces, exposed to the elements, where I may get mud on them. Things like cement floors help us move quicker, load and unload faster, get the product in and out. It makes a better show for us overall.” Demir is involved in every part of the business. “A lot of people go to market once or twice a year, and they hire people to do everything for them. They usually don’t touch the merchandise. We drive our own trucks. We load and unload the trucks. We load and unload our containers. We are hands-on,” he says.
As for how he chooses what to bring to Market Hill, Demir says, “Our creative process is constantly evolving, but it’s very simple. We look at every product with an open mind, beyond its appearance. We also keep our clients in mind. ‘Who would like this?’ is the question I’m always asking.” Even after all of these years, Demir still loves the thrill of the hunt. “The hunt excites me the most,” Demir says. “What are we going to find around the corner? What’s under there? There’s always something new to discover and to create. Along with the prospect of finding the unusual, there’s always something out there that hasn’t been seen, or if it has been seen, it’s been overlooked. In that case, you have an opportunity to transform it, to make it something valuable.” Something new for the fall show for Nomadic Trading Company is an expanded showroom at Market Hill and is bringing more pieces of furniture as well as their collection of rugs. “Our space has doubled. That’s going to allow us to express our style and showcase our products much more efficiently. Now I can bring all of my stuff.” When we asked him to share a product that he’s most excited about bringing, he says, “This is hard for me. I don’t have one single piece I can talk about; I have an entire collection of unique found goods from France, Spain, Turkey, Hungary and Germany.”

eCoop Designs is a veteran-owned design studio, build workshop and storefront focused on sustainability.
Based in Round Top, ReCoop Designs came about by chance. After a four-year stint in the Marines, owner/founder Cooper Meaders earned a degree in biology. While applying to get his Masters, he found a part-time job at New Living, an eco-friendly design studio, where he worked in their low- and zero-VOC paint and finishes department. With access to an assortment of equipment and timber, he started making a few pieces and placing them on the showroom floor – just to see what would happen – and they all sold. He soon put his schooling aside to focus on crafting handmade creations of his own design. He took what he learned about sustainable, green living practices at New Living and applied it to his company, ReCoop Designs. “As part of a mission-based company,” Meaders says, “I strive to use materials that are almost always salvaged, surplus or reclaimed, to create unique work that showcases Mother Nature at her finest.” Meaders and his wife, Jennifer, have been coming to Round Top for five years to not only present their collection but also to find inspiration. “Participating in the Round Top antiques show has allowed us to expand our designs creatively,” he says. “[Our] creations provide a unique point of view, and the exposure to new styles, designs, and once lost treasures from the past have impacted our passion and vision. Our customers tend to be folks in search of one-of-a-kind pieces that first and foremost are beautiful and also have a rich history and story.” As for what we can expect to see at Market Hill, he says, “well-curated antiques, architectural elements, lighting and other various home and lifestyle items.”

he literal translation of “renouveau” is renewal, or a revival of something as it becomes popular again. This is the inspiration for Renouveau Antiques, a direct importer of fine European antiques. Owned and operated by Houston native Ashley Radack, Renouveau Antiques is new to Market Hill, but Ashley has been coming to Round Top for 20 years and selling here for six years, after she began importing in early 2014. “Round Top is a magical place where buyers and dealers come from all over the world. It is rare if you see someone not smiling or laughing,” she says. Ashley has a passion for the process, traveling all across France many times a year to handpick each piece, chosen for its unique beauty and historical significance. What she loves most about her work is “the treasure hunt of finding that one-of-akind unique antique for my client.”

“Round Top is a magical place where buyers and dealers come from all over the world. It is rare if you see someone not smiling or laughing,”
“My clients are the joy of my job. I specifically think of them when I am in Europe shopping. They appreciate being unique, just like the pieces I sell.” When it comes to finding that specific piece for a specific client she says, “I think this comes from experience. One of my gifts is being able to read my client and their taste and style.” As for her own style, she describes it as “dramatic mixed with simple with an emphasis on 17th- and 18th-century French and Italian antiques.” And she promises to bring the drama to Market Hill.
“My space is filled with one-of-a-kind pieces that lean towards romantic and dramatic.” When asked to share a few of her favorites, she says, “All of them! I wish I could be more specific, but I truly love all my pieces.”

Antiques Décor & Lifestyle PHOTOGRAPHY BY MEGHAN HORNE
Susan Horne
H
ouston-based Susan Horne Antiques was born out of a love of friendship and antiques.
“For many years, as my girlfriends and I traveled to Round Top for the spring and fall Antiques Festivals, my knowledge and my passion for antiques grew, and I realized my deep desire to be in the antiques business,” Susan says. In 2013, she started with a small booth at The Arbors. “I sold out of practically everything I brought to my first show and soon found myself combing the countrysides of France, England and Belgium to find the best furniture, accessories, and collectibles for my clients.”
64 | FALL 2020
Susan now brings her latest finds to Market Hill. Among them, “my signature blue,” she says, “and a timeless look that combines beautiful antiques with elegant upholstery and distinctive lighting and accessories.” Elegant, timeless, traditional are words that describe Susan’s style. Susan shares with us her excitement for the fall show at Market Hill. “Market Hill allows us to design a beautiful showroom that we can tailor to our own brand,” she says. The brand she has created is based on quality as well as hospitality. It feels good to step into her showroom. “We value our customers and appreciate their time,” she says. “We want to make them feel comfortable and welcome when they

are shopping with us. I’m always up for sharing a cup of hot tea or a glass of wine when my clients come in. I have met so many new friends through this business. I am very grateful, and each one means a great deal to me.” Designers, hoteliers, home builders, boutique owners, staging companies, and new homeowners are just a few of the buyers who will stop by and visit Susan. To provide a great inventory for them, Susan and her daughter, Meghan, travel abroad several times a year to assemble an exceptional collection of one-of-akind pieces. “One of the great joys I have in this business is traveling the beautiful countryside of Europe with Meghan. We not only learn about the antiques we buy, but we also learn about our European friends and the history of their countries. We return with beautiful pieces for our clients and with special memories of time shared with friends that we will have forever.” Her clients have come to appreciate her eye for unique and quality items. “They value quality,” she says. “I love English antiques for several reasons. The depth of the wood, the lines, the brass hardware, the quality. I have a hard time parting with some of the pieces.” Susan has been successful, because she knows her clients like a variety of styles, so she always has a wonderful selection of French, Italian and Spanish antiques as well. “No matter the origin, antiques never go out of style. They go with every trend that may come and go. Antiques are unique, classic, timeless and full of personality. If you buy a piece with beautiful lines and curves, and it’s built well, it is unlikely to ever go out of style.” Susan promises to have a great selection of antique furniture, mirrors, chandeliers, silver, ironstone and more. Whatever your cup of tea, Susan is happy to help you find it.

im Braunscheidel is in the business of architectural salvage. Unless you’re in the home building or resto industry, or a fan of HGTV shows like Fixer Upper or Salvage Dawgs, you might not be familiar with what architectural salvage is or the process it involves. When a building or home is scheduled to be demolished, Jim goes in and dismantles it, painstakingly removing items of value or intrigue, decorative or functional, including wooden floors, barn doors, crown molding – anything that displays fine craftsmanship or reflects historical significance – and he finds new uses for them. This could mean repurposing these items into original designs of his making, or working with clients to find another home for them in a new construction or renovation project. It’s an arduous process of recycling, reducing and reusing very old and important architectural details that might otherwise be discarded and lost forever. “I started off as a carpenter by trade. I was a homebuilder for 20 years until I had

an injury. My leg was crushed in an elevator. I lost everything. I had to redefine myself,” Jim says. “I had been collecting architectural salvage when a friend told me people want to buy this stuff. So, I took it to a show and sold it all.” This is how he got his start, working with clients who were restoring their homes and in need of authentic architectural elements. “When the housing market crashed, I had to redefine myself again,” Jim says. “I took what I learned from my days as a carpenter and started to build things from the salvage. I was discovered by high-end retailers who loved my products, and I started building custom pieces for their brick and mortar stores.” But when the retail industry declined, and brick and mortar stores started to shutter, Jim found himself rebuilding again. “I met Paul Michael, and he invited me to Market Hill. This is another turn in my career where I am taking everything I
have learned, and I am refining it again,” he says. “Market Hill is amazing. I feel part of the family. I am accepted, and it encourages me to grow and expand.” An important part of his business is connecting the right people with the right products. “I am new to Texas. I am looking for the right customers to find me. Getting these pieces and parts into the hands of the right people is a priority. It’s why I do what I do.” Meet Jim at Market Hill to hear more about his passion, learn more about his process, and to find the missing piece to complete your project and preserve a bit of history.

“I have been coming to Round Top for as long as I can remember. As a young girl, my mother always brought me along to hunt beautiful antiques and one-of-a-kind pieces. Round Top embodies the ultimate ‘thrill of the hunt.’ And, you are always guaranteed to meet talented, creative artists who often become great friends.” When we ask what’s new about her business, she says, “This year, we have taken on several young families as clients. They have infused some more color and excitement into our aesthetic. However, we are always careful to remember that trendy is the last stop before tacky.”

“Sometimes the most unusual piece may fit a client very well, although it is a piece at first sight they would have never considered. This is a fun part of the job; showing clients how even the most unusual piece can work in the most beautiful way.” She adds, “We love to find old architectural pieces that we build into client homes. Old antique shutters into cabinet doors, architectural frames into mirrors, etc. We love using unusual elements in a non-traditional way.” “We have a very fun client currently who loves a modern aesthetic with lots of bright pops of color. We found an artist to make neon acrylic mirrors and are bringing some of these mirrors to the show. We love mixing neon and acrylic with antiques.”

ased in Houston, Tribute Goods is a luxury Italian linen company that combines art and home decor. Founder/interior designer Karen Pulaski collaborates with fine artists, graphic designers, and linen purveyors to create original artwork, which is then evolved into exclusive linen collections through digital printing. The result is a canvas of the finest Italian textiles with breathtaking art and meaningful themes. “The collaboration with artists to create printed collections in Italy is at times quite challenging,” Karen says. “But, it is always worth the extra effort. Seeing the hand of the artist expressed on each product makes it feel like original art for the bed. Taking everyday items and making them special and sentimental feels great to me.”
It’s obvious that others share her sentiment as Tribute Goods has been honored with NY Now’s “Best New Product” award, Paper City’s “Best in Product Design,” a Neiman Marcus Spring Home Catalog cover and featured editorials in Traditional Home, Luxe Interiors & Design and Modern Luxury. This will be Karen’s first time showcasing her work at Market Hill. “I'm new to the Round Top experience,” she says. “My dear friend Stacy Graubart [of The Select Pick] has been sharing her experiences with me for a while, and has been kind enough to host me in her beautiful space. I want to bring joy and optimism into a room, especially now with our world in such a state. Color and whimsy are so uplifting to the spirit. I hope to bring that happiness to others through our colorful and playful collections.” What Karen has in store for Market Hill includes “our newest bedding collection

They also love a story behind what they are buying.”
