FUNER AL SERVICES
OUR HERITAGE F. H. Halliday and Son is an independent family business owned by Glyn Lawrence and his wife Helen, direct descendants of the Halliday family who established the funeral business over a century ago. Our aim has always been to give the best service and help to families at such a difficult time - we hold traditional values, whilst realising the importance of choice and have a modern view about funeral services. For us, carrying on the family tradition is a way of life, we are deeply committed to upholding professional standards. We know and appreciate local customs and expectations as we have served our community for many years.
In the 1800’s the Halliday Family were carpenters, painters and decorators employing eight people at our current address in the High Street. One day someone came into the woodworking shop and asked if it was possible for us to make a coffin. It was from that time that we entered the funeral trade. If you look back in history, many older familyowned Funeral Directors in this country started out as carpenters. Our records show that from 1880 F H Halliday started carrying out full funeral services providing horse drawn hearses and horse drawn mourning coaches. These records were written in long hand for every funeral which we still have in an archive that survives to this day. The business was founded by Frederick Halliday and passed to his son William (Bill). In the late 1950’s his nephew Edward (Eddie) Lawrence came to join him in his business with his wife Kitty. Eddie worked in the Carpentry workshop while Kitty ran the office and decorating business. Eddie’s son, Glyn joined the company after leaving school at the age of 17. He began working with Eddie in the carpentry workshop, learning all aspects of the trade from decorating and carpentry to bearing, all the way to becoming a Funeral Director. In 1966 Bill Halliday retired and the company was formed into a Limited Company and was then owned by the Lawrence family. Today the Company is still privately owned by Glyn Lawrence and his wife Helen. Whilst many family firms have been sold on to bigger corporate groups, we are proud that our company is still an independent family-owned and run business. Our aim has always been to give the best service and help to families at their most difficult time. At F H Halliday we honor our traditional values, whilst embracing modern technologies and customer preferences within the funeral service.
