JEANIETOMANEK JEANIE TOMANEK draws upon themes that first developed in her poetry and explores various feminine archetypes from myths, folktales and her own experiences. The natural world as she experienced it growing up on a farm in the Genesee Valley region of New York also strongly influences her work. Trees, flowers, birds and snow are symbols for emotional states or story elements, while dogs sometime accompany the pale, bald “everywoman” protagonist on her journeys that often take place below a starry and moonlit sky. Tomanek has been called a mythic artist who tells ancient stories that never grow old. “I love to show the strength and optimistic attributes of women. Even when they are in a quandary or in danger, I always try to show a glimmer of hope and wisdom–that they will solve the riddle and make it through, stronger and with dignity. Being bald and shorn of any particular identity, they become all women. My figures often bear the scars and imperfections that in my opinion characterize the struggle to become.” “In my work I use oils, acrylics, pencil and thin glazes to create a multi-layered surface that may be scratched through, written on or painted over to reveal and excavate the images that feel right for the work. In reclaiming and reconstructing areas of the canvas, the process of painting becomes analogous to having a second chance at your life, this time a little closer to the heart’s desire.” Tomanek’s paintings have appeared as cover art for several literary journals and poetry collections. Recently, her painting “Thoreau’s Pumpkin” was included in the Hudson River Museum’s “Paintbox Leaves, from Cole to Wyeth” and has had three images included in “Re-enchantment”, a project produced for the Australian Broadcasting Company that explores the ongoing effect of fairy tales in our daily lives.

HEATHERBARRON HEATHER BARRON’S distinctive, intuitive style centers on seemingly melancholy feminine figures that strongly resemble her self-portraits. “I do think I look like myself in my self-portraits, but in the other paintings I’m just painting from imagination. I paint a face so it looks like I feel it should look. It is more quiet and peace than melancholy, and more wisdom of having lived life.” Barron was raised in Yarmouth, England and was surrounded by history. As such, she always had great love for the patron saints of medieval times. “I have come to realize that my works to this day are greatly influenced by my happy childhood and stories of 18th Century Europe. I initially began painting religious icons and saints, finding inspiration from the Renaissance Era. I have since developed a larger format allowing me the creative opportunity to paint the moments captured out of life. I am happy when I am exploring the unknown and enjoy the process of these works evolving from the small format. As I continue to create larger works I can still visualize an icon figure waiting to be painted. I want to invoke in others the passion and the awakening that happened to me when I was so moved upon seeing a great piece of art.”
