photo-shoot, it negates the logistical nightmare of getting young children or elderly relatives, down to a studio. No computer trickery, no gritted teeth and fixed stares – just simple, beautifully taken, natural photos that encapsulate the moments you want to treasure.
Lincoln photographer Stuart Wilde believes that “Say cheese.” might just be the truest words ever spoken in the history of photography. Here, he explains to Molly’s Guide why... Go on, admit it, how many times have you looked at photographs taken in a studio setting and discreetly thought to yourself: “They’re just so cheesy…”? There’s a reason for that. Studio work can have certain positives, but naturalness isn’t one of them. Many people are quite rightly uncomfortable with the forced and fake atmosphere inherent in many studio shoots. Your home - or a similar setting of your choosing - is where you spend time with family and friends and by booking a home
With no studio overhead to worry about, the price of a photo-shoot session is only £90. With that, you get your own private, unique password locked gallery, where you can view and buy only the prints you want, directly through the gallery, with print prices starting from as little as £5 - discs also available. So there’s no 'free shoot but the prints cost X-hundred pounds'. You control how much you spend. The feedback is really nice, too. “Thank you so much for taking such wonderful photos of our family, we really can't express how happy we all are with them” is just one of the recent comments I’ve received from a home photo-shoot booking. Beautifully done, natural photographs you’ll treasure forever, but whatever you do, just don’t say “cheese”.

Daddy Day Care 'It's Christmas time, there's no need to be afraid', well so the song goes... But I'm a little bit nervous. This year my children will be old enough, to fall for an idea, that a chubby man with a sack full of toys for them, will squeeze down the chimney on December 25th. It's partly true. I'll take the stairs. I suppose this year I'll have to make a proper effort and buy something appropriate for the two three-year-olds who have everything. That is, specifically, everything made of plastic. I should get used to the idea of fun at Christmas but it's a lot of effort for just one day in my opinion. I saw mince pies on sale at the end of September, heard Slade's 'Merry Christmas Everybody' by the end of October and by the first week of November, I'd written off any chance of landing the Mad Men Series 1-5 box set with an ill-thought out comment to the wife about a dream date with Joan. I guess I'm afraid because this year I'll have the noisiest Christmas since 1978 as two of Santa's little hell raisers tear my house apart, as they rip through a huge pile of presents from family and friends. All this chaos will happen at a time when, historically, I've usually put myself in a position where I'm sensitive to loud things by eagerly celebrating goodwill to all men. While I'm delighted people have chosen my children to create landfill, sorry, buy gifts for, I do worry that anything I buy will be overlooked in the swamp of treats left under the tree. I remember my dad saying me and my brothers enjoyed playing with the packaging rather
molly’s guide | Edition 4 | Winter 2012
George & Joseph Charlton than the gift itself. Also there's the thing, where they are bored of what they received by Boxing Day and now want what their friend got instead. Frankly I'm not sure Action Man could handle the rejection. Another rumour doing the rounds is that the boys won't sleep on Christmas Eve because they will be so excited, with a friend saying they'll drop off at about midnight and they will be up at 4am, to start opening their Christmas stocking fillers. That's terrifying! Ok, I accept I better drop the scrooge routine. So in a nutshell, it's probably going to be a present-filled, alcohol-fuelled, rip-roaring few days of unforgettable festive fun for the adults watching children have the time of their lives. Seriously, 'It's Christmas time, there's no need to be afraid'...

Lincoln’s Christmas Market
Festive fun at the Lincoln Christmas Market. There’s plenty to keep children thoroughly entertained at this year’s Lincoln Christmas Market. From traditional festive tales like A Christmas Carol and individual shows like ‘Seasonal Shakespeare’ performed on stage at St Paul in the Bail, to the sound of Christmas carols floating through the air and on street entertainment, there’s something for everyone. Children wishing to take something special away from the Lincoln Christmas Market this year, should head straight to the Christmas Crafts tent at the Lawn. Helped by staff from Ruddocks of Lincoln, children will be able to make crackers, cards and tree decorations for just £2 per child.

Back by popular demand, the children’s Winter Wonderland, with rides and activities including the Snow Globe, the merry-go-round and the Polar Express, is just next to the Christmas Crafts tent. Holly Parker, Events Officer at the City of Lincoln Council, which organises event, said: “There’s nothing quite like the festive atmosphere at the Lincoln Christmas Market, and children are a big part of that. As well as the magic of the market itself, we’ve got activities and entertainment for all the family. We hope everyone will have a fantastic festive time!” To find out more about the Lincoln Christmas Market, visit www.lincolnchristmasmarket.co.uk or follow Jingle, the market mascot on Twitter - @lincolnelf

Some card PVA Glue Paint and brushes Scissors Foliage from the garden Glitter Unwanted Christmas decorations

Handprint Christmas tree This Christmas tree is made simply from handprints and items found in your arts and crafts drawer such as glitter and pom poms. You will need; • Coloured Card • Green paint • Paint brush • PVA Glue • Glitter • Pom poms or other craft resources To create the Christmas tree get your child to paint their hand with the green paint. The hand prints start at the top of the paper with just one. On the next layer you place two hand prints side by side and finally the third layer has three hand prints side by side. Once the Christmas tree has been created the children should use their artistic skills to decorate the tree with the glitter, pom poms and other craft resources you have gathered.

Lincoln Ice Rink CRACKING PERFORMANCE PROFESSIONAL figure skaters and coaches Kelly Hemingway and Neil Chilcott are to play a starring role in celebrations to mark the return of Lincoln BIG’s Ice Rink. Kelly and Neil are delighted that the Rink is making a comeback to the city this Christmastime, after a one year break. But they are not the only ones - more than 2,000 school pupils have already been booked in for skating sessions! Kelly and Neil, the business brains behind Skate Like The Wind – a school of excellence based at the Peterborough Ice Rink – and other rising stars of the ice, are set to dazzle the crowds when they open the Rink on December 1. It will remain open for public skating sessions everyday, except Christmas Day and Boxing Day, right through until December 30. In addition to the opening performance by Kelly and Neil, people will be able to marvel at skaters Rose Happer and Eleanor Hayes, who will be fresh from performing at the British Championships a week earlier. Ice dancers, sisters Emma and Katie Goring, who also compete a national level, promise to captivate the crowds. Kelly said: “We are really excited about the return of the rink. It is really popular and we are delighted to see it making a comeback. It would be good if Lincoln could have its own rink because it is a really popular sport, which has been helped by programmes like Dancing on Ice.” Lincoln BIG’s Ice Rink offers great fun for everyone from families with toddlers, to school groups, adults and corporate groups –

and parties can even hire the “venue” for their own celebration. Parents will also be pleased to know that our fun Penguin skating aids will also be returning to the rink this year – especially for youngsters who need a little help to stay on their feet! Lincoln Events and Promotions Manager Michael Armstrong said: “A lot of people were disappointed when we decided – on cost grounds alone – that we could not justify bringing the ice rink to the city last year. “But we are thrilled to say that we have made it one of our essential attractions for Christmas 2012 and, judging how quickly school parties have been eager to book sessions, it already looks like we’ve made the right decision. “Everyone is welcome to make the most of this attraction and we would particularly like to encourage business parties to get their skates on and take to the ice as part of their Christmas office celebrations.” Ice skating session start on the hour and last for 45 minutes. Weekday ticket prices range from £4.50 for a child/concession to £6.50 for an adult. Weekend prices cost from £5.50 to £7.50 per per person. To avoid disappointment, people are urged to prebook ice rink sessions by calling 01522 717118 or going online at:

Lincoln Drill Hall On selected Saturdays, the Drill Hall runs a Diddy Disco, from 10.30am to 12.30pm, allowing toddlers to let off some steam dancing to music played by DJ Alice and friends, while parents and carers can have a free cup of coffee. Face painting is available in the café bar. Tickets £2.
Lincoln Drill Hall has expanded its range of activities for younger children. Molly’s Guide went along to find out what’s on offer. If you’re looking for somewhere local to take your youngsters, try the Lincoln Drill Hall. The venue has long had a reputation for quality plays and performances, and is now offering more options for younger children. Marketing manager, Gavin Street, said: “Our programme now has more things for children than we have ever had before. “We have tried to create a family atmosphere at the Drill Hall, with dedicated shows for little ones, as well as theatre groups with members from very different backgrounds who are all local. “We’ve recently introduced a play session for young children on a Monday morning, which is proving popular with parents and carers. Our new Café Bar is becoming known as childfriendly place for parents to drop in.” New play sessions for toddlers and pre-school children, called Happy Monday, have been introduced, in association with the Rhubarb Theatre. The sessions, every Monday from 10am-11am, include interactive story telling, music, dance, craft and other fun activities. Entry costs £3 per child (free for parents). Booking is essential.

The Drill Hall is also home to theatre groups, including the weekly YoungCut session for 1418-year-olds; the Neon Youth Theatre for 11-25-year-olds and the FishTank Youth Theater for seven-year-olds and over. Lisa James (Below) took Zeddi (5) and Freya (2) to see the Birds Nest Theatre Company perform Blown Away. Here’s what Zeddi thought about it: “The play was about a boy who goes to bed and is visited by the wind, who wants to take him on an adventure. At first the wind wasn’t very strong. She asked the children in the audience to blow hard so she could save all our puff to help her get stronger and take the boy way, way up into the clouds. It was really good because you could sit on cushions and be really close to the actors. Freya is only two and had never been to a play before, but she was very good and sat watching. There was just one bit that frightened her. She liked the singing and the bubbles that came down from the sky – the children were allowed to get up and go and catch them. The wind took the boy back to bed, but when he woke up, he couldn’t remember anything. So the wind got a huge piece of paper and asked the children in the audience to draw what they could remember about the play, so we could tell the boy what had happened.” www.lincolndrillhall.com Box office: 01522 873894

Christmas in Gainsborough Heaps of Christmas Fun in Gainsborough The Gainsborough Christmas Market will be held this year on Sunday November 25th and will be open from 10am until 3pm, the theme being "A Right Royal Christmas”. The market is always held on the last Sunday of November and triggers the start of Sunday Christmas shopping in the town. There will be around 50 stalls this year with a choice of charity, craft and trade as well as food for the hungry. Support from Gainsborough Town Council this year means there will be even more entertainment, including 2 rides for the little ones which are completely free . Facepainters, a balloon modeller, stilt walkers, jugglers and a street magician will add to the fun. Also entertaining families will be 2 choirs, one being the local Lea School children. Music will be played throughout the day and the Town Crier will also be on hand to announce events. While in Gainsborough, it would be a shame to miss the authentic Moroccan Christmas market over at Marshall’s Yard which will be there until December 23rd. There will be a wide range of exciting, unusual and colourful products for sale at the market.

Christmas Shopping
Santa’s found the perfect place to stock up on Christmas presents this year, now that Ruddocks of Lincoln has opened up its new toy department. If you’re looking for the perfect children’s Christmas presents this year, you’ll be pleased to know you don’t have to drive for miles – or go online. Ruddocks of Lincoln – one of the city’s oldest businesses – now has a dedicated children’s toy section, with a huge array of toys to suit all budgets. The High Street store opened its toy department this summer and is gearing up for a busy Christmas. The new department is all thanks to owner and managing director Henry Ruddock’s sevenyear-old twins, John and Sarah. Henry says: “Two years ago, the children made me realise that there’s a different world out there. I looked around and thought ‘there’s nowhere in Lincoln with a dedicated toy shop – why don’t we give it a go?’
“We slowly started to spread out with a greater range and then, in August, we opened our dedicated toy department.” Henry adds: “We have tried to concentrate on quality, creative and educational toys. “We’ve got things to do, things to learn, stuff to assemble, and things to make, such as jewellery. The twins give feedback on the toys we stock.” “There’s something for everyone here. We’ve got keepsakes, small presents, jigsaws and small toys that are suitable for taking on holiday. I would be very surprised if anyone came into the shop and couldn’t find something to suit their requirements or their price range. “But if there is something that people would like to see that we don’t stock, I would like to hear from them. We do value customer feedback.” If there is something you think Ruddocks should be stocking, email Henry Ruddock at: henry@ruddocksoflincoln.co.uk
“At first, we stocked a few toys to see how they would sell, and we got some great comments and feedback from customers, who were impressed with the fact that the toys we stocked were a bit different. We then started talking to one or two suppliers and got access to a whole new range of stuff.

Internet Safety A small study carried out by the Anti-Bullying Alliance (ABA) in south east England revealed one in five children questioned had been bullied online or by phone.
Cyber bullying and internet security How safe is your child? It’s been a long day at work and you’re busy cooking tea. Your nine-year-old is in their bedroom on the laptop and texting but what are they doing? Wrapping kids up in cotton wool doesn’t work – they need skills for life and they need to learn for themselves but they also need to be aware of dangers in the cyber world. The Internet and mobile phones are part of our daily lives but they have also opened up doors for those who wish to bully and take advantage of other children.\ Chat rooms, MySpace, e-mail, Facebook, instant messaging and other online tools have helped create problems for parents, carers and schools. Cyber bullying, when a child is tormented, threatened, harassed, humiliated or embarrassed is a growing problem in primary schools which can leave emotional scars.

The ABA say parents and carers must learn how to help children protect themselves – a view shared by Dan Hawbrook from Lincolnshire Safeguarding Children Board. One safeguard available through the Lincolnshire Schools Network is Securus – a system that can flag up potentially inappropriate behaviour on computers. Securus can look for activity such as predatory grooming, bullying and even suicidal thoughts by pupils. Netsweeper, which blocks anything from social networking at school to accessing unsuitable material, is in place at the vast majority of schools in the county. But as Dan Hawbrook, e-safety officer with Lincolnshire Safeguarding Children Board said although technological innovations help they are not the total solution. Children need to be taught how to use the internet safely to help them not just now but when they are older. “Technology is a bit like having a lifeguard at a swimming pool – it does keep children safer but if you teach them how to swim themselves, you’ve given them a skill for life!” The Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) say it’s not just mobile phones and computers which can cause problems – gaming sites and consoles can also be dangerous places.
molly’s guide | Edition 4 | Winter 2012
Internet Safety TOP TIPS FOR PARENTS AND CARERS Start young! Know who your children are talking to and what they’re doing. Get them into safe surfing habits when they start using the computer.
“Like any programme that is online, gaming sites and consoles which connect to the internet allow children to potentially have access to those who they don’t know,” said a CEOP spokesman. “The advice is the same for whichever way they connect – whether it be mobile, social networking, chat or gaming – it’s important to remember that people who you meet online can lie or manipulate. “Children need to remember that their online life may have offline consequence and that if they feel uncomfortable they need to tell their parents and CEOP.”
Make using the computer a family activity and put laptops and other devices which connect to the internet in a family room. Help your kids to understand that they should never give out personal details (e-mail addresses, mobile phone numbers or pictures of themselves) to online friends. If your child receives e-mails from people they don’t know (eg junk or spam mail) remind them not to open it. Help your child to understand that some people lie online and therefore it’s better to keep online friends online.
