Wildscreen Panda Awards 2018

Welcome to the 2018 Wildscreen Panda Awards t has been a huge honour and great responsibility to be the Chair of the Panda Awards Final Jury 2018 and to be part of such a unique celebration of our industry. Since their inception in 1982, the Awards have been a lasting monument to the natural world storytelling genre. It’s an unrivalled opportunity for our global community of storytellers to honour creative innovation, excellence in the craft, to recognise and nurture the most exhilarating emerging talent and to remind us all of the vital role we play and responsibility we have in giving a voice to those who cannot speak for themselves.

group of 8-12 year olds from Easton in Bristol and a school in León, Mexico who chose Children’s Award finalists and winner!

After being gifted a shortlist of 37 nominees across 17 categories, expertly whittled down from over 800 entries by an international Nomination Jury of over 40 worldleading producers, broadcasters and craft professionals, my fellow Final Jury and I were locked in a screening room for one week to experience the most breath-taking and thought-provoking stories from the past two years. And of course, we can’t forget the most decisive of all our judges – a 30 strong

From the Jury and Wildscreen, thanks to all of you who live and breathe our genre. We’re in for a wonderful evening and we can’t wait to see what you all create next.

t was an honour to be part of the prestigious jury judging the inaugural Wildscreen Photo Story Panda Award. Even in its first year, the contest received an impressive number and diversity of submissions from around the globe. Storytellers ranged from early-career photographers just exploring the power of visual communication to great masters who excel in their craft. Our nominees were chosen for originality, creativity and powerful or moving narratives. I am excited by

This year’s nominees are a diverse blend of styles and budgets from over 12 countries. They tell the stories of single organisms to the planet as a whole, give a platform to the humans who have dedicated their lives to unearthing nature’s secrets and protecting it. They deliver much needed messages to global audiences and some simply, but beautifully, celebrate the sheer brilliance and magic of nature.

Jeremy Bradshaw Chair of the Wildscreen Panda Awards Final Jury 2018

Wildscreen’s evolution into an all-encompassing celebration of the visual storytelling crafts, and hope this Award will inspire more committed photographers to share their stories about the beauty and fragility of nature.

Wildscreen Panda Awards 2018

Christopher Parsons Outstanding Achievement Award It can take huge teams to tell a wildlife story, to reach and engage the wider public and to protect species and habitats but there are some very special people that go above and beyond. The Christopher Parsons Outstanding Achievement Award exists to recognise those people or organisations that do exactly that. Chris was Wildscreen’s founder, former Head of the BBC Natural History Unit and the visionary behind Wildscreen’s biggest public outreach programme,

the award-winning Arkive project, which is now the world’s biggest online encyclopaedia of the natural world. He was the inspiration behind all that Wildscreen does. This award is presented by Wildscreen to honour an organisation or individual that has made a globally significant contribution to the art of storytelling, conservation and/or the wider public’s experience and understanding of the natural world and the need for its protection.
