2014 WELCOME

elcome to Standon Calling. I really believe there’s something special about this place. It’s not just because I grew up here, but also because every year thousands of you come and create an atmosphere unlike any other festival I’ve been to—a bubble of fantasy, fun and groundbreaking new music that stays true to its house party origins. It’s one of the highlights of my year, and I hope yours too, when we come together to create the mixture of innocent daytime fun combined with all-night bacchanalia that makes Standon what it is. Standon Calling started out as a house party. I had a few friends round and we had a barbecue, a bit to drink, some tunes and some chaos. It became an annual thing, and each year the tunes were a little louder, the party went on a little later, and there were a few more bodies strewn unconscious about the corridors of the house the next day. Eventually we built a stage (badly) and began booking live bands and DJs. That meant more people wanted to come, and suddenly we had a festival on our hands. Today that early, rickety stage we built has transformed into the Main Stage, where I’m thrilled to be hosting acts like Maxïmo Park, Frank Turner and the legendary Public Enemy. It’s been joined by the Big Top, where you can catch amazing up-and-coming acts (see music on pages 14-23) and dance your wellies off to sets from the likes of Grandmaster Flash, Greg Wilson and Felix da Housecat. And once again we’ve displaced the cows (somewhere nice) so that a mere cow shed can become The Cowshed, where

you can party till 5am to Gilles Peterson, Norman Jay, Asadinho and many more. Each year some very special people have helped me to put the festival together, and I am forever in their debt. There are too many to thank individually, but I have to mention a few. My parents, who have welcomed thousands of guests to their home every year and who have supported me through good times and bad. Also farmers Philip and Jeffrey, whose dedication is beyond words. One example of their indestructible commitment, off the top of my head: last year, when the articulated lorry delivering the lights refused to enter the site, they loaded all the stage lighting for the festival—that’s twenty tonnes, by hand—onto their flatbed. And everyone who’s been with the festival for so long: Graham, Tired, Sam, Demelza, Tom and the rest of you, you know who you are. Thank you. And you. If you’re a regular, thank you for your continued support. It means the world to me. And if you’re new to Standon, I wish you the most amazing weekend. Say hello if you see me walking about, and thank you. Love,

2014 THEME n the past we’ve celebrated eccentricity with Running Away from the Circus, embarked on exotic expeditions with Journey to the Ends of the Earth, delved into the demonic and the divine with Gods & Monsters, and grappled with glamour and gore with Murder on the Standon Express. The theme is more than just an excuse to dress up (although, look, we’re not going to deny it’s mainly an excuse to dress up). It’s a chance to experience another sensory reality, to truly immerse yourself in the rhythms, traditions, myths and culture of the most fascinating continent on Earth, as we get Lost in Latin America. This year you can dance to the Standon samba beat, chow down on churros and chillis in our Caracas street market, enter a Mexican wrestling competition or experience a luxurious afternoon in our lagoon. On Saturday afternoon the Standon Carnival will beat its way through the festival—and you can be part of it. You’ll be able to learn flamenco dancing, float building, piñata making and voodoo ritual workshops. Then, come carnival time, you’ll lead the carnival procession through the site, to its end: judging the fancy dress! And when you fancy a tequila or two, leave your sombreros, pistoleros and inhibitions at the door as you enter our cantina. It's the kind of place you can share a jug of voodoo juice with a jungle tribesman, play cards with a conquistador, eat mushrooms with a Mayan, chat up an Inca or have a coffee with a capybura. Then later, in the sultry heat of the night, the real Latin America emerges. A humble cowshed becomes a frenetic fiesta with pulsing beats and hypnotic lights. And that’s not the only place to lose your mind. All over the site are venues bringing to life the spirit of everything from Machu Picchu to mescal-soaked narcotraficantes.

2014 CHARITY MUSIC

We all have them. We all need to get to know them. eet CoppaFeel!, Standon’s new official charity. Not only are they here to remind you to check your boobs right now, they’re also on a mission to ensure all breast cancers are caught at the earliest stage possible, when treatments are more effective and survival rates are higher. Five years ago, Kris Hallenga discovered she had secondary breast cancer. It took doctors eight months to diagnose her from when she first felt something unusual in her boobs, and by that time her cancer was at stage four. There is no stage five. She was 23, and today she lives with incurable cancer. Kris wants to ensure that others don’t find themselves in a similar situation. One in eight women will

receive a breast cancer diagnosis at some stage in their lives. And chaps—400 men a year get diagnosed too, so listen up! What one word would you use to describe your boobs? That’s the question the girls and boys at the Boob Cube will be putting to you this year. Most ladies use words relating to the size or shape of their boobs, such as big or small, pert or saggy but CoppaFeel! want to change that. We want you to get a feel for them. That’s right ladies, it’s time to get to know #WhatNormalFeelsLike for you and give yourself the best chance of spotting any changes early. It all starts with a new word to describe your boobs, so hop on over to the Boob Cube right now and share your word with the team and learn the signs and symptoms of breast cancer whilst you're there. If you’re lucky, they may even give you some marshmallows and a special T-shirt! And if you need a monthly reminder, text ‘NORMAL’ plus your word to 70300 to get your free* reminder every month straight to your phone. You’re welcome. P.S Ours are “squidgy.”

*Standard network rates apply for the text you send to sign up. Everything's free after that. Promise.

CARNIVAL!

Stare slack-jawed as the Standon Calling Carnival moves across the site if you like, but we recommend you go one further and get involved. Make your costume at the workshop and join in the fun.

MEXICAN WRESTLING

Viene la tormenta! Gawp at the highflying antics of Lucha Britannica’s fearsome luchadores, then learn how to grapple, power slam and choke-hold at the Mexican Wrestling Training Camp. In association with Jose Cuervo. Book your place at the Info Tent.

DOG SHOW

Who lets the dogs in? We do! Not only are pooches welcome to the festival but they get their very own show on Sunday afternoon. We’ll level with you: it can get pretty chaotic. Look, we’re all pretty hungover by this point. And the dogs aren’t helping.

SWIMMING POOL

If the South American swelter gets too much, why not pop on your togs and take a dip in the pool? This is the only festival in the UK where you can do that, so get stuck in!

REHAB RAVE Give your weary body a break—sweat it out of your system as you move to some morning beats with detoxing juices on Sunday morning.

Standon - All Pages-NEW3.indd 5

FLY THROUGH THE FESTIVAL Those loco outdoor flying trapeze artists Gorilla Circus are back to give you the chance to fly unencumbered over the festival. Sample the high life for only eight quid with a Try ’n’ Fly session, or book a longer 1½ hour session where you’ll work your way up to a free-flying catch!

PI ATA CHAMPIONSHIPS Pour your creative energy and skilful craft into making a beautiful piñata at our workshops. Then smash the $@!* out of it on Saturday after the Carnival procession.

MESCAL AMBULANCE “Hello, which emergency service do you require? The mescal ambulance? What the hell is the matter with you!?” Yep, if you’re feeling poorly this is the last thing you want to see hoving into view. However, if you’re feeling wild and wanton then a shot of mescal will set you up for an unforgettable* night. (*you may well forget everything).

COMEDY SPECTACULAR “A bit like being hit in the face with a big bag of fun.” That’s how The Spectacular Spectrum of Now describe themselves. We like that. We like fun. We like being hit in the face with it. If you do too, get ready to cackle your way through their unique multimedia variety show.

ROCKAOKE They’re back! No shonky backing tracks here: this is your chance to sing karaoke with a full live band behind you. “One of London’s finest WTF experiences!” (Time Out). Is that even a compliment? Who cares! It’s the most fun you’ll have this side of a Nordic air guitar contest.

CASHLESS To improve safety, reduce hassle and cut queues, we’ve gone cashless again this year. On your wristband is a secure chip which you can use to buy food, drink, or anything else on sale in the festival. Load it up with credit when you enter, or top it up at the top-up station. You can add credit to your wristband using cash, credit or debit cards. Then before you leave, visit the station to have any remaining balance on your wristband refunded in cash or put it towards a ticket for next year to get a special price of only £79! Wristbands must be attached to your wrist—you cannot pay with one that’s been cut off. In the unlikely event your wristband goes missing, don’t worry, your money is secure. As soon as you tell us about it we’ll cancel the old wristband and give you a new one—with all your money still on it.

WELFARE TENT Need a quiet space to get yourself together? The welfare tent is a friendly

RECYCLING You can help us with our commitment to the environment by recycling your rubbish and taking your camping equipment with you when you leave. There are numerous recycling points around the festival, with clear instructions on what goes where. All festival packaging is made from special biodegradable material, and all our electricity is generated from 100% vegetable fat.

LOCKERS Wouldn’t it be great if you could keep your valuables safe and top up your phone’s charge at the same time? Wouldn’t a festival that provided stuff like that just be the best? No no, really, we’re happy to oblige (for a small fee). You don’t need to thank us. Oh all right, a little peck on the cheek then.

TAXIS We’ve partnered with minicabit.com to ensure you can get away smoothly when it’s time to go. If you can fill a cab with six people, a one-way trip to London can be had for as little as £15 per head (depending on exact destination). HAPPY CREPES

GOOD & PROPER TEA

Watch in delicious anticipation as the batter hits the pan, knowing that at Happy Crepes they only ever use stoneground organic flour from Shipton Mill in Gloucestershire for their batter. And that’s not all— their fresh mushrooms, tangy lemons, luscious strawberries, spicy ginger, juicy tomatoes and aromatic basil are all locally sourced where possible. In fact all their ingredients are always fresh, never from a tin!

Those good and proper people at Good & Proper tea have spent a lot of time thinking about the perfect cuppa. For the last year they’ve been tasting teas from farms all over the world, always looking for a distinctive character that stands up on its own without any blending or additives. And it’s all served up from a delightful 1974 Citroen-H van named Watson.

COSMIC CARAVAN Creative veggie street food from a vintage Romany caravan with a space-age look! Globally-inspired food, from Sri Lankan to Israeli to good old British chips. Plus an out-of-this-world array of pickles, dressings and relishes to light up your tastebuds. Vegan and gluten free options available.

BEEFCAKE Finest 100% beef patties. Locally produced artisan egg-glazed buns. The utmost care in selecting and preparing their produce to give you the ultimate beef experience, all served from a shiny Airstream. Excuse us while we wipe the drool from our chins…

CARNIVAL COFFEE If you need perking up then get down to Carnival Coffee for some of their own very special blend of 100% ethical, organic and fairtrade coffee. Or if you fancy they’ll sort you out with some tea, pastries, fruit or even porridge too. Take a break from the madness within the bounds of their white picket fence. Open 24hrs.

JUZU Dedicated to bringing you the spirit of authentic Japanese street food, Juzu offer sizzling teppan fried yakisoba noodles, mouthwatering simmering katsu curry and much more. Savour the taste and soak up a flavour of the east.

KOUEI Healthy and delicious Japanese classics from Kouei, including Yaki Udon, Ebi Tempura and Mabo Don. Mmm!

GOURMET CHORIZO It’s a chorizo revolución! Wholesome, hearty, smoky and spicy sausages served with professionalism and a dash of theatrics—that’s what makes Gourmet Chorizo’s food so special. Made from free range, acorn-fed, Black Iberico pigs, these 98% meat (and gluten-free) chorizos are the secret to the magic. Gluten free. Vegetarian & vegan options available.

O SO JUICY O So are on hand all weekend with piles of delicious fruit and natural ingredients and juicers at the ready so that we can keep our vitamins up and have enough fuel to keep partying. You won't find any nasties in their drinks and they’re all served ice-cold from Poppy, their brightly decorated VW Camper Van.

FISHDOG We like hot dogs. We like fish fingers. But which is best? There’s only one way to find out: FISHDOGS! Yes, Mark Hix has done the unthinkable and combined them. Perfectly fried pollock served in a hotdog bun with minted mushy peas and tartare sauce, with a side of crispy chips, washed down with Fentiman’s soda—the perfect festival meal. And for afters try their cinnamon-coated doughnuts served with hot salted caramel sauce. Bliss!

POMMOROLA PIZZA GARDENS Do you like your food to be thrown around by excitable Italians before you eat it? We do, which is why we love Pommorola Pizza Garden’s magical combination of homemade dough, wood-fired ovens and acrobatic pizza-throwing. They even run pizza-making workshops—fantastic for kids and anyone fascinated by fine food. And with giant smoking mushrooms and zebra striped climbing walls, their stall is a magical area from which to order and eat your pizza.

SWALLOW BAKERY Inspired by the light, sponged cupcakes and rich, thick buttercream frosting of Manhattan’s finest bakeries, the Swallow Bakery caters for sweet teeth at festivals all over the UK. Cupcakes, brownies and cookies—all freshly baked from locally sourced ingredients. If you get tired of cakes they serve gourmet paninis and bespoke barista coffee too… but seriously, who ever gets tired of cakes?

And for the first time this year they’re building on their classic

From Friday afternoon our friends from Selva will begin recruiting Carnival Warriors, so look out for them if you fancy joining in the fiesta, or go and see them at the Selva Tent. You’ll learn tropical skills including maracatu drumming, samba dancing and costume making. Then on Saturday morning the workshops continue. Saturday is also your chance to show off at the Standon Calling fancy dress competition. Transform yourselves into shimmering señoritas, handsome hombres, or anything in between or

beyond. And this year it’s better than ever before, for where better to dress up than… CARNIVAL! Yes, on Saturday afternoon the real Carnival begins. A huge parade will make its way around the entire festival site, culminating in a special carnival set on the Main Stage by the Cuban Brothers, opening the gates to a night of Cubano style craziness. Will you be in it? Of course you will! Head to the Selva Tent at 1:30pm on Saturday to get ready for the start of the procession at 2:30pm.

ince forming in Long Island in 1982, Chuck D, Flava Flav, Professor Griff, Terminator X, DJ Lord & the S1Ws have been performing and recording with raw honesty and unshakeable insight. They redefined hip hop production with 1987’s Yo! Bum Rush the Show before doing the same for politics and culture with It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back. If there’s one thing we can learn from Public Enemy’s career, it’s that the need to speak truth to power never goes away. They are the ultimate headline act for the biggest party night of the summer. The world needs Public Enemy, perhaps now more than ever, so get ready for a bumper 90-minute set that you’ll remember for a long time to come.

2014 MORE VENUES

fter a stunning debut last year with the Whoop Whoop Circus, Count Sizzle returns to Standon to bring you three nights of deep and dirty dance music. The kicks off on Friday with Asadinho’s Latin-flavoured house mix. Then on Saturday we welcome the legendary Gilles Peterson back to Standon—a DJ with of an enclyopediac knowledge of all beats Latin American. And to see you out, it’s none other than dance legend Norman Jay, who closes the Cowshed on Sunday.

Every night the Count will be joined by names like Benny Ill (Horsepower), the Mixnots, Tom Gilleron, Count Skylarkin’, Jay Taylor and the Cleen Boys, as well as taking to the decks himself, to bring you a wild variety of Rio rhythms and Latin block-rockin’ beats. From old school cumbia, boogaloo, Latin soul and funk 45 rpm records in the early evenings, to the best of contemporary Brazilian rhythms and bass culture from midnight onwards, plus the big bad tunes that no street party could do without, it’s all going off in the Cowshed.

he bar by the lawn is the place to come for those stimulating and intimate festival experiences. No, not those kinds of stimulating and intimate experiences— the kind where you can get involved, be right up close with the music, learn new things and laugh your sombreros off. The Inca Hoots Inn is also the home of Salon London, who open their weekend of enthralling activities on Friday with a talk on Manu Chao’s relationship with Latin America hosted by his biographer, writer and broadcaster Peter Culshaw. Then it’s time to get dark and sticky with Latin American Chocolate Tasting, before the Spectacular Spectrum of Now regale you with their twisted multimedia rewordings of a traditional variety show. On Saturday afternoon Salon are back to teach you Chilean percussion and singing

and Argentinian Tango with the Corrientes Social Club, after which you can rock out with Rockaoke—the incredible musical experience where you can be the lead singer of a full rock band! Then don’t miss Indeedy Musical Bingo—all the fun of normal bingo but with songs instead of numbers, with some amazing (and some kitsch!) prizes to be won. Finally, as day turns to night, there’s music to see you though to the small hours. Sunday sees the return of Salon bright and early for Capoeira and Samba Drumming sessions. Then, if you’ve enjoyed the culinary concoctions of the Robin Collective on Friday and Saturday, you can learn how it’s all done at their Extreme Garnishing workshop before chilling out and swaying to the sounds of Lil Rice and Ollie Clark. To close the Inn it’s over to Diane Chorley, aka the Duchess of Canvey, to sing you out (over your laughter—she ain’t half a laugh).

Crammed with all the passion and excitement of a Rio carnival, there’s so much happening at Standon Calling it might initially feel a little overwhelming. This year’s theme is “Lost In Latin America”, but it seems only fair to provide some kind of roadmap to nudge you toward new and beguiling experiences over the weekend. Simply take our extremely scientific personality test to see what musical acts and activities might chime with your aura. Ready? ¡Buena suerte!

A Crank up some house music

to speed things along? B Offer to show them your patented slow-and-steady approach? C Pick up their mallet and declare “I am Thor!”? D Ask them about their life and travels as you help them out?

full flow when the DJ beckons you toward the decks. Do you put on...

A You Got The Love? B Everything Flows? C The Roobarb & Custard theme? D The Girl From Ipanema?

3. A young chap looks a little lost on the

dancefloor during DJ Format. Do you...

A Encourage him to join your dance circle?

B Give him a fierce but welcoming hug? C Smile and offer him a high five? D Yell out “Que pasa?” 4. You’re in the desert and you see a

turtle struggling on its back. Do you...

A Spin him round like a breakdancer before getting him up? B Patiently encourage him to come out of his shell? C Ask if you can keep him as a pet? D Lie on your back alongside him to see what you’re missing?

2014 QUIZ IF YOU ANSWERED MOSTLY As: YOU ARE ...

A HEDONISTA You have dancing in your blood, and will do anything to seek out a beat, so don’t miss two hours of Felix Da Housecat (Friday, Big Top, 12.30am) late on opening night. You might want to loosen up for Felix with Iggy Azalea’s BFF Charli XCX (Friday, Big Top, 7.50pm) while fellow chart stars Clean Bandit (Saturday, Main Stage, 8.35pm) combine deep dance love with classical virtuosity to persuasive effect. If you love poised pop, it’s also worth seeking out icy heartbreakers Say Lou Lou (Sunday, Main Stage, 6.20pm). Beyond electronica, snakehipped up-and-comers The Bohicas (Saturday, Big Top, 2.45pm) have an irresistible knack for scuzzy rock. And if you want to add to your repertoire of dancefloor moves, check out the Corrientes Social Club Tango Session (Inca Hoots, Saturday, 3pm) or even try your hand (and feet) at Brazil’s slinky martial art Capoeira (Inca Hoots, Sunday, 1pm).

Standon - All Pages-NEW3.indd 25

MOSTLY Bs: YOU ARE ...

A BELIEVER

You have a deep love for music that moves you. No-one would doubt the passion of headliners Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls (Friday, Main Stage, 10pm) or righteous agithoppers Public Enemy (Saturday, Main Stage, 10.15pm) but there are amazing artists who make music that wears its heart on its sleeve playing throughout the weekend. William Doyle’s remarkable solo project East India Youth (Saturday, Big Top, 7.25pm) conjures real emotion from beautiful electronica, while the eclectic, electrifying Young Fathers (Sunday, Big Top, 7.30pm) have charisma, and energy, to burn. The stars are aligning for the brilliant Peace (Sunday, Main Stage, 8.05pm) and their lung-bursting choruses but if you really want to explore matters of the heart, track down one of our voodoo ritual workshops.

MOSTLY Cs: YOU ARE ...

A BIG KID You rarely act your age, and such child-like love and enthusiasm will find a perfect match in DJ Yoda (Saturday, Big Top, midnight), the ninja retronaut who creates amazing audio/ visual extravaganzas that manage to be both nostalgic and futuristic. You may also find a kindred spirit in the form of tipsy folk star Beans On Toast (Friday, Main Stage, 5pm). The madcap parps and inventive covers of the Hackney Colliery Band (Sunday, Main Stage, 2.55pm) recall the promising haze of endless schooldays, and if games are your thing, don’t miss out on Indeedy Musical Bingo (Saturday, Inca Hoots, 4pm). If you aren’t just a big kid at heart but actually have children with you at the festival, seek out the kid’s area – not far from the swimming pool – where younger festivalgoers can experience everything from facepainting to Maurice’s reggae nursery rhymes. You can keep them entertained and have a breather at the same time.

MOSTLY Ds: YOU ARE ...

A CULTURE VULTURE You’re determined to experience new cultures from the inside out, and will throw yourself into anything exotic and unusual. This year’s Lost In Latin America theme means that the entire festival is saturated in colourful, exotic sights, sounds and aromas – and The Cuban Brothers (Saturday, Main Stage, 3:30pm), the greatest party act in the world, excel in all three areas. To really get into the spirit of the festival, become part of the Standon Carnival, which features a raft of activities from flamenco dancing to float building. Apply yourself and you could even become one of the high priests leading the parade. There’s also a chance to get some spirit and fire inside you with the Latin American Chocolate Tasting (Friday, Inca Hoots, 5pm) or hone your performative skills at the Chilean percussion and singing workshop (Saturday, Inca Hoots, noon). And don’t forget undoubtedly the most relaxing type of cultural immersion: Standon Calling’s signature swimming pool, open every day from 9am6pm.
