Rapid public transport analysis. Neccesity in providing new train stop to minimise irregularity of distances between stops and providing connection to new focal point which is Samaritana.
New trains stop has been design and balance in distances restored.
Now: Areas of geological pits, water containers in flood case. Water imprisoned, in case of overfill unpredicted spill.
Design: Water pits connection with ditches to control the water flow. Cascade system with absorptive ground to let the water irrigate.

History. Factory Samaritana used to be a cutting edge technology cotton wiring manufacture. Established by Scot Mr Black, was one of few with two steam engines and two majestic chimneys stating importance of the industry. Fires has burnt buildings twice, giving the factory the name of survivor. Inspired by the factory, Abel Bothelo located his novel plot here.

Valley Chelas is one of the two ecological corridors of Lisbon. It is an important greenery chain leading from the highest parts /120 AMSL / to Tagus River, providing fresh air droughts, greenery and wild animals accessibility. Few times a year intensive rain flows the Valley causing temporary river. Flow of the water is improved by chain river and lake-mix solution proposed by geologists. Moreover, the tunnel in rail bridge is designed to ease the water flow.
Time to get to Samaritana Factory from different places in Lisbon. In minutes.
Pragmatic evolution. Continuous changes had been applied gradually. Extension doubled area. New business approach reasoned social workers houses and rental properties. Used to be one of the best prospering factories in Lisbon at the time. There was an idea to extend factory vertically with two levels but never happened. Borders. Natural borders put massive impact on connections. As Valley is articulated strongly, extreme dips create unmovable borders. Lack of road continuity is observed. Cementary is another function unmovable border which stopped city development in the direction.
IN S
Services analysis: lack of activities in the center of the Valley. Potential for new services marked with saturated circles.

Process of the factory’s growth is strongly visible. Next step is to preserve not only the physical expression of the structure but evolutionary character of the function and architecture as well. Idea approaches ruin state as the step of transformation, not useless destruction. Necessity for vibrant focal point in the surrounding has been considered. New proposal is based on mixed-use program. After 1947’s the second fire has demolished entire factory. Small businesses moved into Samaritana. Samaritana 04 wants to welcome micro companies, artists, adventure enthusiasts, small services of any kind and activities to grow and develop here as it has already started in ‘47. high medium

M scale architecture Possibility for the real mixed use.
The common space challange.
Business strategy is based on designing cubes of volume with construction and all the equipment with media and pipings included - excluding walls, floor, roofing. Investor is obliged to describe type of business he is planning to erect and amount of boxes to buy. Administration of the building is approving the submission if they meet demand and buyer commisions another architect to design interior and elevation. Effect? Democratic and diversed choice of program inside the building. Mixed aesthetic of the building. Style-less or style-full architecture? Vibrant for sure.
Concept can work only when common space as public, semi public and shared space is interesting, diversed and practical. Corridors, interior streets, interior plaza, stairs has to be multi use thought. Exposition of elevation is important to let the true eclectism outburst - or coherency design miracle if Co-Design workshop will state so. Respectfully new architecture does not fight with exterior walls of Samaritana, but interior is another approach. Typology of circulation has to be varied and multi-use as possible inspiration for the program to be introduced.
Co-Design.
Spaces.
While boxes are sold, workshops for architects will be set to provide sort of conversation. The output of Collective-Design workshop is unpredictable and approach is experimental. Agreement on debate or disagreement are both accepted and compatible with the idea. It is exceptional and rare for architect to work in such a minimum proximity to the neighbour architect (0.00m distance). Sometimes architects share one wall.
Samaritana is a XIXth century architecture. Sense of regularity and modularity is dominating. To preserve modularity the structure is modular as well. 6x5m rectangular grid has been applied. It gives ease of construction and emphasize industrial fashion. Space diversity has been challanged. Opened, closed, terrace, moving elevator platform.

As shown in historical evolution, the internal wall used to be external before extention of Factory. Similarly, in Roman Theatres they build “exterior” facade as the scene background. This was inspiration for providing performative arts into hearth of Samaritana. Once the performance start, terraces are converted into audience with good visibility towards scene. As music is absolute, everybody inside Samaritana’s public space become spectators.
