I am Paweł Unger contact info: e: pawel.unger1@gmail.com t: 0048 515 486 944 post: 36 Lipuska St Gdansk 80-178 Poland
Hello, my name is Paweł Unger. I am a Masters Degree student at Gdansk University of Technology (GUT) Department of Architecture in Poland. I did a semester long internship at the Glasgow Strathclyde University and also completed three professional internships as listed in CV. I was working as a designer and visualization producer for private investors and the Gdańsk Municipality. Professional experience. As a result of my university and professional experience, I have acquired a broad range of various skills and competencies. Taking part in competitions, internships and workshops reinforced my skills for working under pressure, meeting deadlines, taking part in meetings and discussions. During my internship I was working on various types of buildings and design stages. From conceptual posters selling the idea, through drawing plans of residential architecture, to big scale business centre development (Olivia Business Centre in Gdańsk). International success. 2
Lately I and my team have achieved 3rd place in an international competition organized by ARCHmedium to design music follies in the Royal Botanic Gardens of Sydney, Australia. I used parametric software to model the structure. Thanks this experiences and my will of exploration I am open-minded conceptual thinker and a confident user of architectural and graphic software as listed in my curriculum vitae. Designer and organisator. I was also an idea-initiator and main designer of an art installation at the magnificent viewpoint towards the sea in Gdańsk. It was a bottom-up project which was successfully built and the Gdańsk Municipality was convinced to finance the whole process. The project was honourably mentioned in the regional newspaper. Workshops. I take part in workshops to face challenges in a cooperative and direct way. This year during A<24 workshops in Katowice, my
team has designed a music-city-furniture called Plug_In which as the only project will be built as a prototype in September. Parametric software. For two years I am a user of Grasshopper Software to develop my design in parametric way. I use it mostly in each architectural and art project, nevertheless my ideas are firstly developed on paper, then translated into digitally representative form. I am involved in art projects for the University using this tool to deconstruct old paintings and compositions into modern op-art form. Another project is about combining Grasshopper and Xbox Kinect camera to analyze footage data to shape structure in a real time. Hobbies. I do not limit myself to architecture. I am a amateour music producer and video maker. My biggest hobbies are playing the guitar and kitesurfing - everybody should try it. :)
Cooperation with you. I apply for an internship in DUS Architects Studio. Firstly I fully agree with your written manifesto that is reflected in your design, which is important for me. In an era of parametrically-naive architecture, DUS design is smart, straightforward and innovative in an approach and tools. The diversity in scale of projects you undertake, makes me sure we have similar definition of what architecture is about. I believe I would be a great addition to your office in Amsterdam and personally it would be an irreplaceable experience to work with DUS architects during my internship.
Wish you all the best, Paweł Unger

What ?
Why?
How?
Aim of the design is to arrange music follies in the park. This would contribute to the musicians promotion in the heart of the city.
There is a need for modernization of the historical Royal Botanic Garden, which is working more as a botanic museum, less as a contemporary answer to the garden design. Proximity of the Opera House and the Conservatory of Music puts the place into the quality and tends to design small auditoriums and rehearsal rooms for popularisation of semi-professional and amateur musicians.
The form combines the unity of music symbolized by a perfect circle and the shape of construction inspired by the edges of the great Sydney bay. The platform is hovering over the central part of the Royal Botanic Garden. Gently lowering down to 7m underwater, into Farm Cove, in harmony with the surrounding greenery. Respectful distance away from the Opera House gives an essential breath to the icon. Sydnity

connects parts of the park by the network of music follies enriching the downtown skyline. Additionally the design opens new panoramic views towards majestic Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Kept stable by a construction of 2000 steel led-illuminated poles formed into a sinusoidal shape. Used as a space-forming tool for 6 auditoriums and 16 rehearsal rooms of three types: on-ground, on-plat-

form and underwater. Music is an absolute matter, each folly is oriented to be acoustically insulated from the others. The design creates a safe lido from the Farm Cove and it is easily accessible from the garden. Sydnity unifies nature, music and the form expression to connect concert spaces to the public space among the Royal Botanic Garden transforming a regular walk into a sensuous performance.

NOMADoffices / working spaces for digital nomads
MANIFESTO //////////////// WHAT ///// WHERE /////// HOW // Parametric style critique. In majority of projects, algorythmic design is a basic tool for attractive form only. This approach does not solve functional aspects. It creates a attractive and high cost elevation rather than logical and ergonomic structure. Prametricism 2.0. Approach based on spatial use of parametric software to design efficient and comfortable space which is based on prior analysis of surrounding and function. NOMADoffice is design fully in parametric environment. You have to assign basic data (border of the building, height, trees localisation, entrances and amount of offices) to generate the structure.
8
Digital nomadism. “One of the rapidest growing social trends is modern, or digital nomadism.” Natalia Hatalska, Infuture Hatalska Foresight Institute. The majority of jobs is no more depending on permanent place to work. Digital nomads derive from various businesses. From writters, bloggers, journalists, photographers, programmers, graphic designers, also lawyers and teachers, but also psychologists who give video call counsels and many more. Huge market is shaping for this style of working. It’s potential is verified by statistic of 1 billion of digital nomads in 2035.
What is NOMADoffices? Personalized offices for nomad style workers. Each user of the programme has its own profile where his adjustments to the working space are assigned. User’s tools, software, hardware, even decoration of interior of the office has its own signatured version. Each user can book an office for a certain period in particular localistion in the world. Mobile office is crucial in working effectiveness. It minimish time to prepare your office and you can use it in each city which is in NOMADoffices programme. No longer localisation of worker is important since his office is following him in the same shape. Psychologically stable environemnt in working is essetial. It makes us not distracted by new surrounding, also helps feeling of security and stabilisation of the firm.
City 2D. 1863 in London the first subway in the world has been opened. It was a big beginning of underground cities development. Today, 157 cities in 55 countries has metro system. NOMADoffices entrance directly from level of subway station. XXL density. Metropolitan centres are extremely densed. Manhattan has 27’826 people per km2. New investings have no space to develop. Only parts left are public spaces like parks, squares and streets. The design will addapt underground part of cities but silmutaneously not disturbing the onground part. Direct natural light in office buildings is over rated. Workers pull down sunshields while working on computer. Lighting in NOMADoffices is fully controlled and addapted to digital work.
Dependent unit. Pradoxally break in the work is a key point of work itself. NOMADoffice does not include any additional services on purpose. Whether localisation is in the strict centre then the surrounding is fully equipped in various services. The design treats city as an organism by contrast to hermetic people closing buildings. Additionally Steve Johnson prooves that creativity is stimulated by leaving work space to release our mind from psychological working-load. It also serves our life in social sense to meet new people and try new things in opposition to internal-office canteen.

W hat? Hall of residence for students who purse to use their creativity and passion to establish and develop start-up companies.
W hy? Gdańsk University of Technology’s campus is not student - friendly designed. There is a visible lack of places to study. Students mainly sit down in noisy corridors, on uncomfortable seats often with no access to electricity supply. This background was an inspiration to design place which is not only a perfect accommodation but a place of building business perspective. Facts:
75%
of students think there is a neccesity for modern study places
64%
of people creating start-up’s are 20 - 30 years old the biggest companies has been established by students In 2015 Gdansk University of Technology has scored the biggest amount of patents in the scale of the country
W here? Hall has been situated in the surrounding of the two biggest universities in Gdańsk. Vicinity of well developed sport, park and communication amenities makes this place attractive for student-life. Ambience of the sprawl is provided by multiply 3-4 storey villas in the street. That was crucial factor in a architectural form of the building.
How ? I have designed unique building’s programme to provoke students to unconventional thinking. It is called Think, Relax, Discuss & Create Strategy. It consists of different areas which are located dependently to each other. 12 Visualization by me

PROJECT 360 ° What ? The competition task was to fill a blank with the cultural function. I've decided to revitalize 115 years old gas container and to make him funcionate as a view point, an amfitheatre and a majestic performance space inside.
cu rrent
Lo cation in pol and
Wher e? In Gdansk City Centre where cultural ifrastructure has naver appeared. Located in the border between historical sprawl and post-industrial land-waste.
Why? If somebody from XIXth century would travel in time he would never expect Bankside Power Station in London as the biggest modern art exhibition space in Europe. Post-industrial structures have to be adapted in a creative way for people's use.
H ow? Current contruction has been used to provide spiral ramp leading people to the top of 33 meter high gas container. Picturesque 360 degree view is achievable from the point. Roofing has been adapted as a parametric designed tribune with a performance scene in the summer and an ice rink in the winter. Inside a building a vast space for performative art has been provided.

T h e e p i c e n t r e Prada Flagship Store and Jamie Oliver restaurant + siteplan design which contributes to public space date: June 2016 / 6th semester type: academic, indivitual my role: entire project location: Poland, Gdańsk, Wrzeszcz District my exact contribution: entire project - from the idea to the visual and technical solutions Programs used: Revit, Photoshop, Rhinoceros, V-Ray, Grasshopper Supervisor: PhD, Architect Elzbieta Ratajczyk-Piatkowska Supervisor's mail: erat@pg.gda.pl
What ? Prada Flagship Store is the first branch of the brand on the Polish territory. The location of the building will raise the prestige of the sorrounding and promotion of the whole district.
Where? Wrzeszcz is one of the biggest and best commercially accessible district in Gdansk. Project cretes a new district's centre which was lacking over years.
Why? In the district there is no night life, and people travell from point to point. Vast communicational artery divides district into two autonomical pieces. An intervention is needed to provide a public space and to create a city centre.
H ow? Concept is to put main communication artery underground and to place a public space on the top of it. This strategical move would contribute a quality of lifing and make district people friendly place. The location of the building will raise the prestige of the sorrounding and promotion of the whole district. Prada fashion showrooms usually uses a checkerboard pattern on the floor. I decided to transfer the pattern on the eastern façade designing black cubic boxes, which also have unique functional purpose. Inside the specialroom , on the ground floor and the first floor has been provided exhibit space for outstanding collections. 22

Context is the biggest inspiration.
Research. Observation. Interpretation. Data.
25
The Floating Piers / Lake Iseo, Italy / 2014-16 by Christo and Jeanne -Claude Interpretation of shapes in a simple way and the unity of them within landscape stimulates me to think in a broader, overall way. The design is a unnatural intervention, but I do not treat it as a matter. It automatically is accepted as spectacular and almost natural action which compromises softness of the landscape with sharpness of the form.

UK Pavilion, Shanghai Expo 2010 by Heatherwick Studio
Reflection of the inside in the outside is a crucial tactic which makes the project coherency at the highest level. Playing with the small scale elements makes observer almost wanting to touch the structure. Light and shade is illusory. I especially admire this project for scale play. One thing is observable from the distance and another appears while stepping closer. 27
Feedback Space - Astro Balloon 1969 Revisited by COOP HIMMELB(L)AU
“Not architecture is changing the human being, but the human being is able to change architecture. “ Wolf D. Prix
Pavilion is a confirmation of statement regarding influence of humans on architecture itself. It is a structure fully reactive in color and shape to observer’s heart beat. The installation gave me a straightforward thought of reactiveness of environment and ways of using advanced technology in pure, urban environment. It is less about aesthetics, more about experimenting architectural forms in a direct way.
28
Quinta Monroy / ELEMENTAL open source architecture
Half-finished houses prooved me that the participation in the process can not only be in a pre-desiegn stage but also in post-design, when the owner can afford it. Roughly 66% of population lives in slums with no decent amenities. This project contributes to the statistic by setting project as open sourced as well.
