Report to the Community

A Personal Message from Our Leadership Dear Friends, Over the past year, your generosity has fueled many life-saving achievements here at PAWS. Together we delivered exceptional care to 8,500 animals of 166 species and educated more than 25,000 people about a wide variety of animal-related concerns. Out of those thousands of successes, we have chosen a few highlights to share with you in our 2015 Report to the Community. While the numbers summarizing our work are impressive, it is the individual stories and faces behind each of those digits that truly reveal PAWS’ impact. Take, for instance, the simple, yet poignant words of Erick, a child whose passion for animals was recently ignited through one of our many humane education programs: “First I thought animals were okay, then PAWS changed me. Now I love animals!” PAWS’ mission of creating a better world for animals and people is ambitious. Yet, as we interact daily with so many people eager to learn about animal issues, rescue an injured wild animal, or adopt a homeless pet, that goal seems quite attainable. In addition to our talented staff, the heart and hands of

our volunteers help make all of this progress possible. Without them, we simply could not care for the thousands of animals who arrive at our doors each year. Likewise, the successes you will find in the following pages are all a direct result of visionary generosity like yours. Whether it’s the grateful guardians who were reunited with their lost dog, the children who found their best friend in a cat adopted from PAWS, or the dozens of veterinary students who gained valuable training in the unique field of wildlife medicine, PAWS touched thousands of lives in countless ways with your help in 2015. Thank you for your continued trust and support. With heartfelt gratitude,

Our Mission PAWS is a champion for animals— rehabilitating injured and orphaned wildlife, sheltering and adopting homeless cats and dogs, and educating people to make a better world for animals and people.

Our Vision PAWS envisions a world where all people recognize the intrinsic value of animals and consistently make choices that demonstrate compassion and respect.

PAWS Helps Animals Find Their Way Home Whether it is a majestic Bald Eagle returning to the skies of Washington, or a shy cat finding her confidence in a new home after being rescued from a hoarding situation, PAWS remains steadfast in our mission to make a better world for animals and people. We could not fulfill our vision without the unwavering support of the communities we serve. Your support of PAWS meant we were able to provide a life-saving safety net to thousands of animals in 2015. Shelter, food, medical care, exercise and enrichment was delivered to 8,500 cats, dogs and wild animals who had nowhere else to turn. PAWS was able to respond on behalf of 4,127 wild animals in need in 2015. Of those, 2,471 were birds of 123 different species, including 188 Dark-eyed Juncos, 12 Great Blue Herons and 96 raptors. PAWS cared for 1,623 mammals, including 17 Black Bears, two Bobcats and seven Harbor Seals.

In 2015, PAWS found new homes for 3,591 cats and dogs. Highlights of the year included “Adopt-A-Cat Month” in June, which saw 112 cats and 94 kittens find their happy endings with new, loving families. And in just one day, a “Road to Puppy Bowl” adoption event saw 53 animals leave PAWS for their forever homes. PAWS Cat City continues to account for 60 percent of cat adoptions, and is particularly successful in helping place adults, seniors and some of the more challenging-to-place cats in our care. Our Placement Partner Program enabled 2,872 companion animals at risk elsewhere to come into care at PAWS in 2015.

This sleek Osprey fell from her nest as a baby and became entangled in fishing line. She spent 34 days in care at PAWS before returning to North Seattle in time for her first migratory trek southward.

PAWS also helped reunite 47 lost cats and 222 dogs with their guardians, including Bonnie (pictured, left)—a two-year-old Fox Hound who had been missing from her home in California for more than a year. Strengthening our role as a beacon of hope for animals in need, 2015 saw PAWS continue our contribution to many important partnerships in animal care and welfare in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Among others, PAWS collaborated with the ASPCA, Puget Sound Bird Observatory, The Humane Society of the United States, Tulalip Tribes, University of Washington, The Falcon Research Group, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, Wings of Rescue, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

A kitten finds her happy ending at PAWS Cat City, our open-colony adoption facility in Seattle’s University District. Here, adoptable cats and kittens stay in rooms rather than in cages, allowing visitors the opportunity to get a better sense of each cat’s unique personality.

PAWS Helps People Help Animals PAWS’ volunteers are dedicated, driven and vital to the smooth operation of our organization. In 2015, they contributed more than 63,000 hours of compassionate care for the animals—whether it be through dog walking, keeping our facilities well-maintained, syringe feeding baby mammals in our wildlife hospital, fostering kittens, or taking their animal advocacy out into the community and representing PAWS at education events. Bringing expertise and skills from many professional fields—including animal care and behavior, photography and videography, and construction and landscaping—our volunteers are invaluable in helping us make the world a better place for animals. Community members turn to PAWS when they have questions about animal welfare or encounter animals in need. PAWS’ wildlife admissions and companion animal services staff answered more than 23,000 calls and e-mails covering a range of questions from adoption, rehoming and missing pets to concerns regarding injured or orphaned wild animals.

To help our high-energy dogs and to improve the reputation of Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes, PAWS launched a “Pittie Committee” in March. A dedicated group of trained volunteers act as ambassadors for these dogs, taking them to parks, trails and lakes for action-filled fun. In some cases, overnight stays are also arranged, providing the dogs with time away from the shelter environment. Valuable information about each dog’s behavior was gathered from these excursions, and nearly 130 off-site adventures were enjoyed through 2015. The PAWS Foster Care Program broke its previous placement record of 1,980 animals, with 2,060 cats, dogs, kittens and puppies placed in 2015. The biggest increase was seen in puppies, with 424 going into care compared to 163 in 2014. And 205 kittens were fostered in June alone. To accommodate the increasing need for this program, a recruitment campaign across PAWS’ website and social media channels was successful in increasing the number of new foster homes by 71 percent, and 33 on-site trainings were provided to support these new volunteer foster parents in their efforts. Above: All adoptable dogs at PAWS enjoy daily exercise, enrichment and training with volunteers. These important activities help keep them happy and healthy during their time in our care. Left: In 2015 more than 500 baby birds, including these Dark-eyed Juncos, were nurtured by volunteers in our Baby Bird Nursery.

PAWS Shares Ideas, Knowledge & Compassion PAWS continues to establish and nurture relationships with agencies, organizations and colleagues through participation in projects, programs, and collaborations. We are sought after for advice, consultation and expertise, and our leadership role in animal welfare and direct care includes representation on the Boards of The Washington Federation of Animal Care and Control Agencies and the National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association. Our hands-on veterinary and rehabilitation training opportunities continue to be in high demand. “My time at PAWS provided more learning opportunities than any other experience I had during my final clinical year in veterinary school,” said Nicki, a 2015 veterinary extern at our wildlife center. In 2015, PAWS hosted 29 students in our wildlife rehabilitation, veterinary internship and externship programs, and welcomed four visiting veterinarians and two veterinary students to our companion animal clinic. In addition to our commitment to providing on-site training and education for the next generation of animal care professionals, PAWS’ staff shared their expertise nationwide—

including the National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association Symposium and The Humane Society of the United States’ Animal Care Expo. PAWS also reached out to our favorite kind of “early adopters,” the children in our community. Through a combination of Kids Who Care classroom programs, custom presentations and on-site tours, more than 840 children aged four through 18 years were engaged in learning about compassion for animals. Eager to share our compassion for animals beyond our physical location, PAWS participated in Project Homeless Connect, an annual event coordinated by United Way to provide basic social services to nearly 200 clients. With Everett Animal Shelter, PAWS provided care to clients’ companion animals— including basic health exams, minor grooming and nail trims, as well as distributing food, flea treatment and pet supplies.

As part of PAWS’ “Keep Cats Indoors” public awareness campaign, PAWS’ educator appears on King 5’s “New Day Northwest” to share news of our first Catio Tour Seattle—an event showcasing the growing trend of safe outdoor enclosures for cats that protects our wild neighbors too.

PAWS assisted communities throughout the region at events that mattered to local residents. Outreach staff shared information and resources at community events, including Flipper Fest, Puget Sound Birdfest, Seattle Pride Parade, Monroe Swift Night Out, Seal Sitters Beach Clean-up, and a Jackson Galaxy book signing. By engaging people in their own neighborhoods, PAWS’ educational messages reached thousands of community members. Our Kids Who Care education program nurtures empathy in the animal advocates of the future. Here is one example of the many letters PAWS receives from children who have participated in our education programs.

PAWS Provides Professional Care for Animals PAWS experienced a 20 percent increase in the number of wild animals received in 2015. We also received one of the more significant patients in our 35-year history of wildlife rehabilitation, a federally endangered Shorttailed Albatross (pictured below, right). Found struggling in the waters off the Washington Coast—emaciated, injured and highly stressed—this amazing seabird was suffering with severe foot wounds on her delicate webbed feet and had been at sea in this debilitated condition for some time, making it easy for the fishermen who found her to net her from the water alongside their boat. Despite the best efforts of PAWS’ staff, she died in care, but not in vain. Her legacy will live on through research and education, and the knowledge gained from her time at PAWS will benefit rehabilitators and biologists should another of her species arrive in care someday. In addition to this federally endangered species, PAWS cared for a number of other threatened or endangered species, along with species of concern, sensitive and monitored

species. Those species included: Western Grebes, Pileated Woodpeckers, Common Murres, Bald Eagles, Osprey and Peregrine Falcons. Our collaboration with Washington and Oregon state partners on recovery efforts for the endangered Western Pond Turtle continued, treating 22 of these patients for a life-threatening shell disease known as septicemic cutaneous ulcerative disease. PAWS’ spay and neuter efforts helped 2,675 companion animals, with 502 of those being cats, dogs and rabbits in low-income homes. Our medical staff also performed 221 specialty surgeries, procedures that save lives and help increase the adoptability of cats and dogs in our care. PAWS’ staff once again joined in World Spay Day as one of 13 shelter partners leading a multi-county effort, which resulted in 900 animals being spayed or neutered at 37 participating clinics.

Above: Found in a field in California nursing four newborn puppies, Betty Blue was rescued just in time. The nearest shelter had no room, but they did have a Placement Partner in PAWS, whom they could turn to for help. Arrangements were made for this canine family in need to be transferred north, and our foster care volunteers gave Betty Blue and her puppies the love and care they needed to grow healthy and strong before finding loving homes. PAWS Placement Partner Program helped more than 2,800 companion animals at risk elsewhere to come into care at PAWS in 2015. Cover: This Snowshoe Hare was one of more than 650 baby mammals cared for at PAWS’ wildlife hospital in 2015. All of the animals pictured in this annual report, and thousands of others, were saved because of the support of people like you. Thank you.
