s is the tradition, we celebrated our first two weeks of classes this year with a field day that student body officers planned. The entire school had lunch under the oak tree in the playing field and then organized by class for a series of competitions and events — spirit yell, tug of war, obstacle course, relay races, jump pit, the joust and (new this year) sumo wrestling. Students and staff love this day, and the surrounding hills echo with boisterous Priory spirit. The shared experience helps build a stronger Priory community. All classes intermingle and people get to know each other in a different light. The “united” feeling at the end is magical. We are introducing a new kind of magic to unite the larger school community, thanks to Internet technology and the creativity of an alumnus, Bob Kamangar, Class of 1984. I am excited about our new WPS Online Community, a fast and practical way to give each of you access to our terrific collective resources. Here are some of its services. To try them out, go to www.woodsidepriory.com and click on Online Community. You will need your Community ID number, which is on the mailing label of this magazine. The ID number assures that only WPS community members have access to the site. Directory: Forty-three years of parents, students, faculty and friends are included. You can search by first name, last name, graduation year or decade, colleges attended, location, or industry. So, if you are in college and considering a particular graduate school, you can access other WPS grads who are there or recently graduated. If you are relocating, you can ask the community for advice about schools and housing. If you’re looking for a job or have one to fill - search our directory by industry. With WPS Online, you know you have something in common with the people who respond. Chat: This is a great place for a group to meet and confer. Students can discuss a homework problem.

Grads can hold a mini-reunion, or organize a time to meet over the holidays. It’s also okay just to drop in. Events: You can register online and R.S.V.P. for several school events, including alumni reunions. Profiles and My Profile: This is your personal web page. You can post your resume, put pictures of a new baby, a description of a home you want to sell...it’s up to you. My Profile is your workspace to design this page. You will have a personal address. Mentoring: If you have career knowledge and are willing to share it, become a mentor! Career contacts, advice and support are important resources alumni traditionally offer each other. We have a considerable talent pool in our alumni and alumni parents. To become a mentor, go to the site and click on the “mentor” button. Select “become a mentor” and fill in the registration form. You will have complete control over the level of service you offer. You can keep your name confidential to users, if you wish. Gifts to the school: Credit card donations can now be made on-line using the VeriSign Secure Site. Bob’s company, Golden Parachute, markets this online application to the larger, well-known universities and businesses. When he asked if we would like to be a “test site,” we knew it was for us. Good tools are in the Benedictine tradition. Consider the medieval monks who saved human knowledge through the Dark Ages. Their handmade pens and brushes were the desktop publishing systems of their day. Our goal is to share our community’s knowledge, and with this new tool I think we’ve found an effective way. All of us at the Priory are thankful daily for the many personal gifts you share with us. This is an especially important message in this Annual Report issue, when we recognize by name our many supporters. Your interest and support, in a variety of ways, allow us to carry on the important mission of Benedictine education. Sincerely,

3 Tim Molak Headmaster

Benedictine Letter Benedictine Leaders Seek To Define Schools of The New Century

B

Woodside Priory’s Brother Edward Englund, left, coordinated the colloquium. Father Gregory Mohrman, of St. Louis Priory School in Missouri, summed up the colloquium proceedings with his presentation, “Where Do We Go From Here?” When people think of the way their communities are organized, they often picture the leaders as “out in front,” turned around so they can talk to all the nonleaders. A better contemporary model might be everyone standing together, facing the same direction in his or her common search for God, Father Gregory proposed. That model emphasizes the role of everyone, leader and non-leader, in defining each Benedictine community.

4

enedictine educators from the United States, England and Mexico met at Woodside Priory School in Portola Valley August 2-6 to share information and discuss common issues. This is a relatively new concept for Benedictines, an order which has a history of working as small, individual, selfsupporting communities. Two general issues dominated most of the five-day conference: encouraging faculty to define and practice Benedictine values, and dealing with the continuing decline of monastics to carry on the traditions. The forty-plus conference members participated in round-table discussions and “knowledge cafes” - topical breakout sessions led by members with experiences to share. In an opening address, Father David Pettigill, head of pastoral services in the San Francisco Archdiocese, cited the need for leaders to discover God’s overarching plan, rather than impose their own. The plan is discernable by using scripture to interpret what one observes in daily life, he said. “The church leader’s role is to (identify,) name and celebrate what’s happening, not to control it,” he said. Sister Mary Claire Buthod, of St. Joseph’s Monastery in Oklahoma, and her colleague, Sister Jacinta Dorado, spoke to the Benedictine concern for respecting individual differences. Their school has developed a program of support for capable students with learning differences that allows them to succeed with children who formerly would have been asked to leave, Sister Mary Clare told the group. Their program asks the student and his/her teachers and parents to define a wide variety of strengths and weaknesses. With the help of a specialist, the team administrator develops a plan that recognizes both. Sister Jacinta follows up individually with each child’s teachers and meets monthly with everyone, she said. Parents and faculty who initially had concerns about watering down the school’s high academic standards now are 100% supportive, said Sr. Jacinta. Father Christopher Jamison, Worth Abbey, England, described the “inspiring success” of Collegio San Emerico in Sao Paulo Brazil - a large K-12 school based on St. Benedict’s rule but run entirely by lay men and women. All of the students practice, in age-appropriate and contemporary ways, the daily routine set forth in St. Benedict’s Rule, he said. A small group of schools from Brazil, Chile, the United States and England, have begun a small support network that could be a model for other schools - especially those seeing the value of a multi-national perspective, he said.

What does a Benedictine education offer for the new millennium? An opportunity to develop the power of a supportive community that shares responsibility. A chance to live in a community that respects all its members, with all their differences. Practice in listening, and finding, God’s guidance in the modern world. Father Christopher Jamison, from Worth Abbey, described the success of a small sub-community of schools - four from three countries - that are learning to support each other.

Rigorous academics that exercise all aspects of human intelligence. Attention to maintaining a balanced life with rhythm and purpose. Values, knowledge and training that are forward-looking, with an eye to the rewards and challenges ahead.

Father Luke Travers, left, from Delbarton School in New Jersey, and Father Philip Davey, from St. Bede Academy in Illinois, enjoy the chance to reunite with a friend, Headmaster Tim Molak.

Summary from the Third Benedictine Colloquium Woodside Priory School August 2000

Monica Judd, left, Victoria Galindo, center, and Gabriela Perlasca, attended from Colegio Guadalupe in Mexico. Theirs is one of a growing number of schools practicing the Benedictine Rule without any monastic faculty. Other schools have a different problem - many monastics live on the campus grounds but have retired and withdrawn from campus life.

Sister Jacinto Dorado, left, and Sister Mary Claire Buthod, right, earned a standing ovation for their presentation on supporting students with learning differences. They are from St. Joseph’s Monastery in Oklahoma; here, they join Sister Bridget Dickerson from Mt. St. Scholastica in Kansas.

These Dot-Com Destinations Promise Creative Family Fun By Mitch Neuger Sixth Grade Faculty

eed to know something right now? Just dial up, click, and scroll down. The Internet has done wonders to feed our appetite for fast-food information and at-home shopping. But the ‘Net offers more than instant gratification for the curious and the hurried. It’s an amazing creative resource, too. If you’re an aspiring writer, hobbyist, or adventurer — or a family of them — you’ll find peers, mentors, learning tools and even your own audience online. The sites I talk about here seem to have real creative potential - they aren’t ones I’ve used in class but are the type I’d bookmark to check out with kids if we were facing a long weekend without much to do. The intent here is to investigate together. If your interests are wide as the Web, a good starting place is the teen forum at About.com (www.about.com/teens). You’ll find links to a ton of topics, from drawing to magic to (real) surfing. Not just a search index, About.com is more like an online convention; flesh-and-blood experts host many topics, with links to advice, discussions and places to send your own work. Young writers and poets — and their family of fans — could find About.com’s writing forum (www. teenwriting. about.com) an encouraging stop. Ready for an audience? The Web offers dozens of online magazines that are interested in young adult voices. Cyberkids (www.cyberkids.com) and Cyberteens (www.cyberteens.com) are user-friendly; the New York-based ZuZu (www.zuzu.org) has an artsy flair; Informnation (www.informnation.org) and the locally-produced Bamboozled (www. bamboozled.org) offer a more opinionated, by-teensfor-teens sensibility. Many sites accept poetry, prose, art and photography. If you have access to digital recording, Young Composers (www.youngcomposers.com) will

publish your original music. Even if you’re not ready to go public, you can still check out the work of other creative folks; sites like Inkspot (www.inkspot. com/ young) invite you to compliment and critique their work. You’ll find these galleries of art, poems and stories a window into a generation, a spark for family talk, and, perhaps, a jumpstart for your own muse. Of course, the surest route to publication-and maybe the most fun-is to publish yourself. Webmonkey for Kids (www.webmonkey/kids) offers step-by-step lessons in Web site creation (including HTML code) as well as project ideas and a Planning Guide for parents. If you’d rather avoid programming and learn by trial-and-error, a number of sites (www.tripod.com, www.geocities.com, and www.homestead.com) offer free online space and tools that help you create, edit and publish your own family home page as easily as using a word Continued on page 23

Internet Sites: A Great Resource But Parents’ Guidance Is Needed By LeeAnn McDermott Parent, Children’s Website Developer Have you talked with your teen about Internet safety? If you have kids at home, has everyone in your family signed a Family Internet Safety Agreement? If not, take a moment to read on. The Internet offers endless wonderful information and resources, but awakens the fears of any parent about access to undesirable stuff. A more remote but more frightening reality, as anyone who reads the newspapers knows, is that the anonymity offered by the Internet makes it an easy place for child predators to lurk. To date, teens are more likely to get in trouble Continued on page 23

hen Andy Schilling started his business career with Rolm in 1982, a life in financial management was far from his mind. In fact, he didn’t like math. He was hoping for entrepeneureal opportunities but in the marketing area, he thought. Rolm’s Finance Department had just acquired some PCs and Visicalc spreadsheet software - the hot new technology of the day. Nobody wanted to touch it. Andy was a newly hatched Bowdoin grad with no particular computing or financial management skills, but he was willing to give it a shot. “I figured I was going to need that corporate finance experience stamped on my resume somewhere along the line - might as well get it out of the way,” Andy said. He opened the manuals, and figured out what VisiCalc could do. In the process he discovered what he loves about the money side of business - it’s a giant, fascinating, many-faceted puzzle. He has been hooked ever since. “Looking at a new company is like reading a new mystery novel. You try to figure out the dynamics, you look for the missing pieces, see what you can do to solve the puzzle and what can be changed to make it better,” he explained. Andy has headed up seven successful ventures since the VisiCalc days. He is currently chairman of a consumer products firm that was recently listed by Inc. magazine as one of the 100 fastest-growing companies in the U.S. He is also president of two investment companies. The Schilling family has an entrepreneurial history. Grandfather August Schilling arrived in San Francisco around the turn of the century and promptly formed a partnership - a coffee business with a Mr. Folger. When that partnership dissolved, August Schilling continued in coffee for a short while, then switched to what the Schilling name is synonymous with today - the spices in little jars with red caps and red labels. Andy could stay as busy with non-profit work as he does with the companies he heads. He serves on four non-profit boards. One is with Peninsula Open Space Trust, a group he grew to respect when sitting across the table in negotiations involving a piece of land. Now he shares his professional experience as a member of their Advisory Board. “They are bright, creative, people with a real talent in setting up ways to achieve their goals. It’s been a learning experience as much as an opportunity to share whatever expertise I might have,” he said.

As board president for the Peninsula Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Andy is assisting the group with its current major priority -implementing a new technology plan. It will bring 21st century resources to this vital volunteer organization, which provides a wide variety of services. The Management Center, another non-profit commitment, offers a variety of much-needed services for non-profits. Management training, board development, job lisings, temporary consultations, even a matching service to bring together prospective board members and board vacancies, are available. On WPS’s board, Andy helps oversee budget development and forecasting of financial needs. “Being on the scene at the Priory to see the values I remember passed on to another generation is rewarding work, and I have confidence in this board. It has exceptionally good, knowledgeable people and I’ve worked with a lot of boards,” he said. “I haven’t thought a lot about why I work with non-profits. I learned that value at home, of course, and it was clearly reinforced and practiced at the Priory when I was a student there. Bowdoin College carried on that influence. Their motto is ‘for the common good’ and that motto pervades the campus life,” he said. Now, the habit of giving back, for the common good, pervades Andy’s life.

Andy Schilling’s financial skills and business experience make him a desirable candidate for non-profit boards. His relative youth also helps — boards are glad to find younger people willing to serve.

he’s a Priory alum, Assistant to the Deans, teacher in the Social Studies Department. People who know this young woman on campus might be aware that all of the above applies to Priory’s Dora Arredondo, but might know nothing at all about her most interesting title - Director of WPS’s Summer Bridge Program for less advantaged, academically talented youth.. Dora was one of the first women to graduate from the Priory. She went on to Santa Clara University to major in Political Science with an emphasis in law and a minor in Anthropology. Dora’s parents came to the United States in 1975 from Mexico, and her goal has always been to find a way to give back to the community she was raised in - Redwood City. Her plan was to do this by becoming a lawyer. “It’s been an opportunity for me to pursue teaching and to learn more about administration, as well as to work in the community.” Life intervened, though, when classes in child development, an influential professor-mentor, and internships at the Public Defender’s Office and as a teacher at Juvenile Hall changed Dora’s mind. She discovered that her true vocation, and the best way to share her gifts, was as a teacher. As Director of Priory’s Summer Bridge Program, Dora’s job is to identify under-served, but motivated, 7th grade students in the Redwood City School District and prepare them for 8th grade Algebra I. The goal - get these students on a math track that will prepare them for college and, more importantly, give them a taste of what they can accomplish. Math success is highly correlated with college admissions, and Priory’s Bridge program is the only local middle school/high school summer program that targets math, Dora said. This past summer, 31 students were accepted into the program. Dora, three other teachers (including Priory’s Doug Sargent), and four Priory student interns (Henry Arredondo, Ayary Diaz, Zayra Diaz, and Laura Hurlbut) worked six hours a day for five weeks with the students.

Her plan was to become a lawyer...but she discovered the best way to share her gifts was as a teacher.

8

Class time included pre-algebra and algebra as well as math/science and math/technology (classes that show how math relates to life). The students also designed and built their own web page and each Friday listened to inspirational speakers (leaders from the Redwood City community). “This adds balance to the program,” explains Dora. “We want our students to hear about the struggles and successes of others from their community who have faced similar challenges.” The success rate - 100%! All 31 students achieved above the necessary score on their final assessment and are now enrolled in Algebra I at their local schools. During the course of the year Dora runs Saturday follow-up sessions for her summer students to ensure continued success. “Working with the entire family helps to ensure that the children can continue to succeed,” she said, ” She’s currently developing workshops to teach parents from diverse backgrounds how to best use the resources available in the school system and to prepare their children for college admissions. Dora’s dreams for the future of the program include working with Priory’s Cayewah and Reed Easley to develop ways to show the students how math and art can intersect. She also hopes to expand the Bridge program in the coming year to prepare her current group for Geometry, as well as a new group of 7th graders for Algebra I. Funding for the programs comes through the Bridge Program, the Peninsula Foundation, and other organizations. The Priory provides use of all of its facilities as a donation to the program. Dora Arredondo, Class of 1995 Santa Clara University (B.A.) Lives in Redwood City Siblings: Ramiro, Class of ‘97, and Henry, Class of ‘02 Favorite Activities: Walking, running, coaching WPS’s seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams, and watching her brothers play sports. The question posed by Campus Ministry was how to portray St. Benedict in the new century. Students’ artistic responses ranged from portrayal of contemporary pain to creations of youthful vigor and symbols of peace and light. This colorful quilt, created by the parent-student team of LeeAnn and Ryan McDermott, includes photo transfers of campus life as well as religious symbols.

Auction items from the hands and hearts of students and faculty are always in high demand at bidding time. This glamorous, classic Porsche was restored by Dr. Martin Mayer and several students. Another student-faculty team built and donated the Wee Lassie, a beautifully crafted canoe. Many students, working individually and in teams with Fine Arts faculty members, created items ranging from designer jewelry to a jazzy, one-of-a-kind snowboard.

Every year, I think the auction can’t get any better. Every year, it does. But I’m sure nothing can top Passage to Paris — what an event! Father Martin Mager Superior of the Benedictine Community

The ambiance of an elegant stateroom aboard the French luxury liner, Normandie, was re-created at the Hotel Sofitel by dozens of auction volunteers. Tickets sold out well in advance of the May 6 party.

Tim Molak, making his eighth appearance as auctioneer, enticed bidders to keep raising those paddles. Bill & Sherri Coats won the bid for Dave Brubeck-Taylor Eigsti concert tickets - “worth a million, Sherri said.
