STUDIO PRACTICE Project Proposal Name Blog Address - http://pPaul Brough brough1316.blogspot.co.uk th Date 29 January 2016 Rationale I aim to create a concertina book showing the journey through a landscape, it shall be a long and detailed piece that will flow smoothly over the many pages of this book. I am currently considering to draw a train track with a train full of passengers on it’s way from the city out into countryside, but I now need to consider the time it will take and the amount of detail I should include. The train track should pass through fields and forests to show various locations with varied animal life. The purpose of the book could be to educate about nature, be an environmental message about protecting the environment or as a body of work that could potentially be sponsored by a train company such as ‘Network Rail’ in order to advertise going by train. In terms of it’s benefits to my practice it will further develop my narrative skills, with me showing a story through the imagery. It will better inform my understanding of animals through the research involved, something I will be able to use in the future. The book should over all develop my drawing skills and help me with my patience to work on a piece over a long period of time. Themes / Subjects One of the over arching themes will be nature; I want to draw detailed and accurate illustrations of both animals and plant life. I’m also considering showing the environmental impact humans are having on animal habitats such as farming, building or even fly tipping. Audience / Context I want the work to be suitable for children, but I’d also like it to be piece adults could look through and enjoy, I’m considering it a ‘coffee table’ kind of book. Something you look through to spot new things, possibly even to educate. The audience will hopefully be the kind that enjoys illustration, similar to the market of ‘Colours May Vary’.

Products / Methods of Distribution

The main product will be the book alone, But if there’s time I could perhaps use the designs to be printed on too T-‐shirts or posters, or smaller ephemera such as postcards, keying and badges. A P.O.S could also be assembled. The work could possibly be animated for digital viewing. As for distribution it would be suitable for most bookshops, or if it was related to a particular train company it could be sold in travel information centres. Practical Skills / Media / Formats

At the moment I’m considering mainly a combination of pen and digital for the detailed line work, with colouring possibly using the brusho technique I’ve lately developed, but I could also introduce paint and ink later if I feel it’s necessary

Additional Project Information

The direction of the project may turn; the main thing I want to do is create a book to show potential future clients that I’m capable of book illustration. Alternative ideas for a concertina book: The migration of a bird/butterfly, A race between animals similar to that of the Chinese zodiac tale, a flow of different species going from birds, to reptiles, to fish etc. Contextual References David Hockney’s photo collage, ’25 trees’ was the influential piece to inspire this work, it shows a collection of photographs that follow the length of a road, in various seasons. I like the idea of the eye traveling along the piece, taking the viewer from one location to the next.
