Secret 7 Diana Ross and the SupremesReflections
Initial Research I began my research for my first record simply by listening to the song as well as others from the album and looking at the general appearance and style of the singers. The music fits into the category of Motown , the general feel of the song is melancholy, most of the Supremes songs are about breakups, over dependency and other troubles with love, I’d like to somehow capture this as a narrative in my design.
Initial sketch Designs I started on my design by considering the setting, I thought a motel would be appropriate as well as it connecting to the idea of having a lonely figure left alone in a room I could have neon lights outside with the letters ‘M O’ of motel connecting also to motown. For the figure I borrowed the look of Diana ross to play the role of the broken hearted.
I considered including adding a cracked mirror in the background to connect to the songs title but later I found this unnecessary, I also liked the idea of showing snow to reflect the cold loneliness of the scene, this would later show in my colours as well.
Reference and Development Recently I’ve become more interested in the style of Matt Taylor, I wanted to employ his clever use of harmonious colours and block shapes into this particular piece.
I also wanted more of a Closed in Perspective on the figure to add more focus.
