From the Editor When seasons change, we’re often inspired to change our decor or start planning that home project we’ve been thinking about for far too long. The toughest part is getting started when it seems the options are endless—and overwhelming. Still, the anticipation of a fresh look and feel in our homes can often be enough of a nudge to take the first step. In this Home & Garden issue, we have 20 inspiring pages of expert advice to help plan your next project, whether it’s a simple decor refresh or a complete home makeover. We consulted more than a dozen local top interior designers to share their best tips for every room in the house. The result is “100+ Inspiring Home Design Ideas,” beginning on page 50, which includes how to mix furniture styles, the best way to display art, the latest in flooring and window treatments—and that’s just for the living room. The kitchen and bath are the two most commonly remodeled areas of the home, as those are where we spend much of our time—and can help with resale. Starting on page 56, you’ll find expert tips on how to bring personality to the kitchen, while also blending luxurious style and function. Ready for a bathroom transformation? Flip to page 60 for small changes that make a big impact, as well as the top styles in tile and fun ideas to play up the powder room. In the bedroom, starting on page 64, you’ll find expert insight on creating a restful haven, as well as design faux pas to avoid and tips to make a guest room more welcoming. (Hint: Don’t fill it with all your unwanted hand-me-down pieces.) Finally, turn to page 68 for ways to design outdoor spaces that usher in our coastal surroundings. Whatever design direction you choose, may you find the perfect path to make your home a sanctuary—and a cozy escape.

Q&A

MICHAEL CARONCHI

STEPHEN BOGART

Stephen and Carla Bogart

CELEBRATING A LEGEND Although born into Hollywood royalty, Stephen Bogart exudes an unpretentious air, sprinkling a conversation with self-deprecating wit. As the son of legendary actors Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, he devotes himself to sharing and preserving his father’s work. He also works with ECAN, the Esophageal Cancer Action Network, volunteering time, as well as his voice for a PSA, to raise awareness, because his father died from esophageal cancer. Stephen moved to Naples a few years ago with his wife, Carla, who works with locally based NewsBank Inc., a leading global informa

tion provider. The couple first became friends in 1982, then reconnected after years in and out of touch, and married in 2014. The Bogarts organize a wonderful annual tribute to Bogie—the Humphrey Bogart Film Festival (bogartfilmfestival.com) in Key Largo, with film screenings, talks, special guests, memorabilia, parties, and cruises aboard the African Queen from the classic film. The fourth annual festival, slated for October 12–16 at the Playa Largo Resort & Spa, will celebrate the seventy-fifth anniversary of the noir classic The Maltese Falcon. —Kat Smith

NI: What’s coming up in the 2016 festival? Bogart: This year it’s getting a big upgrade at the brand new Playa Largo Resort. We’ve got classics on the big screen, not just in theaters, but under the stars. It’s very mellow, very Key Largo-ish. No suits and ties, just a fun time. And we’re going to kick off our new line of Bogart’s Spirits—Bogart’s gin and vodka are the first two. We are making the booze in California and giving people jobs, which is important. Why is your father an enduring American icon? I think because he was a real guy. He believed in treating people well; he was not a snob and was his own man. Add that to the number of great movies he made—it is almost unparalleled. The number one movie of all time could be Casablanca. Then there’s The Maltese Falcon, High Sierra, The Desperate Hours, Key Largo, To Have and Have Not, Sabrina. That type of filmography is special for an actor, and that type of success is special for anyone in any business. Do you have a favorite Bogart film? I just love Treasure of the Sierra Madre. He wasn’t going to do the movie because his character dies at the end. He said, “I’m a big star, why am I going to die?” My father’s manager, Sam Jaffe, said, “John Huston, the director, is your best friend, and he wants you to do the movie and won’t do it without you.” So he did it and it turned out to be one of the great films, in my view, of all time. That’s my favorite, other than To Have and Have Not, which is the movie when my parents met. If it weren’t for that, I wouldn’t be here. NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | OCTOBER 2016

NI: What inspired you to open a jewelry store? Janss: When I moved to Naples, there were only 7,000 people here. I was married to someone and he owned a gift store. I was a model, but there weren’t opportunities for that here. My interest in jewelry was what moved me into it. Then, people found out about me, and I started making them jewelry. What has changed about your pieces or design process over the years? A lot, really. I used to make bigger, more artsy pieces, with precious and semiprecious stones. You have to move in the direction of style changes. It’s all a constant state of flux. What has kept you in business all these years? My philosophy is to listen to people. That’s how you discover what they like. I try to help people; it’s an important thing to do. I always tell [customers] that the impossible just takes a little longer. In 50 years, I’ve had to remake only three pieces. What are your plans for the future? I don’t have all my eggs in one basket. I also do real estate and love to travel. But everything else will be status quo. I’m too young to retire; I’d be bored.

HONORING HEROES Local veterans will head to Washington, D.C., on a special trip later this month to be honored for their service and recognized for their sacrifice. It’s all part of Collier County Honor Flight (collierhonorflight.org), which takes World War II and Korean War veterans to the nation’s capital to visit war memorials, as well as to Arlington National Cemetery for the Changing of the Guard. The trips are supported solely by private donations and volunteers, and at no cost to the veterans. Three years ago this month, Collier County Honor Flight was launched by Dr. Deborah Lux, a former U.S. Navy officer, and her husband, Sean, a U.S. Air Force veteran, after being inspired by the documentary Honor Flight, which they watched at a local screening in Naples. The documentary is about the Honor Flight Network (honorflight.org), which began in 2005 to transport veterans from across the country to Washington to visit war memorials. While researching the nonprofit, the couple discovered a waiting list of more than 250 veterans and contacted the organization to ask about starting a regional hub. On October 8, 2013, Collier County Honor

Flight became an official hub. Six weeks later, local veterans were transported on the inaugural flight. Honor Flight is a community event, with both Collier and Lee County police officers helping to escort the veterans. So far, Collier County Honor Flight has completed a dozen flights, including an all-female-veterans trip in June. By the end of 2016, the program will have honored 700 veterans, whose average age is 92. Deborah Lux says they may soon expand the program to reach Vietnam veterans and beyond. Those who want to show support for our local heroes can do so at the next “Welcome Home” event for veterans October 29 at around 9:30 p.m., which is when the next Honor Flight lands at Southwest Florida International Airport. —Anna Welch Collier County Sheriff's Office Lt. Hippo-spotting with Micato Safaris

When it comes to commingling ultra-luxury and extreme nature, Micato Safaris tops the East African food chain. Organizing and hosting epic African journeys for 50 years, Micato reigns as the world’s most-awarded safari operator while remaining a small family business. Though scheduled group safaris are offered (with a maximum size of 12), the company’s true specialty is the bespoke safari, which can accommodate any number of guests. From the big-cat obsessed individual to the avid birder to the couple who prefer the romance of safari to the early-morning reality, Micato has everyone covered. In a continent where a seamless experience constitutes the ultimate luxury, expect a worryfree, highly personalized, and extravagant trip from beginning to end. (micato.com)

For decades, elite safari accommodations took shape as super-sized canvas tents erected in remote wildernesses and possessing myriad creature comforts yet requiring a welcomed touch of “roughing it.” However, changing tastes have resulted in new incarnations of safari abodes with designer interiors and amenities like air conditioning, rain showers, and spas. Case in point: The Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, an enclave of 77 exquisitely appointed accommodations in the heart of the Serengeti National Park with luxuries previously unheard of on the safari circuit, like a full-scale gym, functioning Wi-Fi, and a choice of four bars and restaurants. It’s a surreal feeling to float across a massive infinity pool as elephants and wildebeest splash around in their own natural watering hole a stone’s throw away. It’s even more surreal retreating to a veritable five-star villa on par with the Caribbean’s finest, yet secluded in a safari setting. (fourseasons.com/serengeti)

Off-roading and night driving are permitted on these private concessions, and the number of vehicles is limited to the guests on the land, fostering more personal and extensive encounters with wildlife. On my latest safari to andBeyond Klein’s Camp, for example, I alone was privy to an entire afternoon and night trailing a massive pride of lions as they stalked their prey, hunted, ate, and then rested, an hours-long coveted experience that would not have been possible within park lands. In recent years, the Indian Ocean has become as much a part of the safari circuit as the wildlife-rich plains. The waters are arguably Earth’s most turquoise, and the private island scene is spectacular. If heading on a shorter safari, it’s wise to either begin or end the trip at one of Tanzania’s or neighboring Mozambique’s ex-

Each year between late July and early October, the spectacle of millions of wildebeest migrating in search of lush grasslands draws travelers in droves to Kenya’s Maasai Mara. But the other nine months of the year, these same charismatic herbivores traverse Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park in a largely predictable pattern that consists of mating, giving birth, and following the rains for fresh food. Witnessing the migration in Tanzania is more intimate—you won’t have to crop out dozens of other vehicles from your photos—and more intense—you’ll spend hours gawking at the river crossing that teems with dangers like rapid waters, hungry crocodiles, and quicksand-like mud. PACE MAKER

By Howard Walker

Jaguar’s highly anticipated entry into the SUV market—the 2017 F-Pace—was worth the wait

What about that name: F-Pace? It’s a little on the quirky side, but not quite as odd as Bentley’s ritzy new SUV, the Bentayga. Bent-tiger, what’s that about? There is some Jaguar history repeating itself here: Back in the swinging ’60s, Jaguar founder Sir William Lyons described his cars as having “grace, space, and pace.” It became Jaguar’s advertising mantra for more than a decade. Once you’ve worked out the “pace” part, the “F” is easy. This dynamic new Jag 4x4 shares much of its componentry with Jaguar’s racy two-seater, the F-Type. It has the same supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine, 8-speed transmission, well-judged suspension, and beefy brakes. And, not surprisingly, the same fun-to-drive character, which can be attributed to the F-Pace’s lightweight-aluminum construction. Less bulk translates into zippier acceleration, tighter cornering, and faster stopping. Just ask Usain Bolt. We’re not talking about a couple of pounds here. On average, a 46 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

new F-Pace tips the scales at 372 pounds under, say, a Lexus RX 350, or 339 pounds fewer than Audi’s Q5. How does this slimmer structure benefit performance? Outfit your F-Pace with the 380-horsepower supercharged V-6 motor—there’s a 340-horse version, but why would you bother?—and you’ll rush from standstill to 60 mph in a mere 5.1 seconds. That’s fast. And this isn’t some manic, hard-edged, raucous speed demon. It has that “grace” part of Sir William’s catchphrase by the boatload. Here is a refined, elegant, dynamic cruiser that rides smoothly with a tinge of Euro firmness. It precisely steers with just the right amount of heft in the helm and feels alive when tackling any journey. It can also handle any kind of inclement weather. With standard allwheel drive, dynamic stability control, torque vectoring, and decent ground clearance, it can withstand even the sloppiest Florida monsoons.

But what really sets this new FPace apart from the crowd is the way it looks. While so many luxury SUVs seem overdesigned and cliché—yes, we’re talking about you, Mr. Lexus RX 350—the Jaguar is taut and muscular, follow howard walker’s the wheel world reviews on NAPLESillustrated.com with sublime curves and broad shoulders. LOCAL INTERIOR DESIGNERS SHARE THEIR SECRETS FOR DRESSING UP EVERY SPACE IN THE HOME, FROM THE INSIDE OUT BY TERI EVANS

Living Room BIG ROOM, COZY AMBIENCE When decorating a large space, many designers agree that it is important to arrange furniture pieces into several conversational areas, which allows for a more intimate setting. “You will enjoy the closeness of the more intimate groupings when it’s just the two of 50 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

you, for example, but still have the ability to rearrange the furniture for larger gatherings,” says Jenny Provost of K2 Design Group. She also suggests using larger furniture that is proportionate to the size of the room. “We just completed a living room in which we used a cocktail table that was 8 feet square. It anchored

the furniture grouping and was completely in proportion to the room size,” Provost adds. If you’re thinking of going small, she cautions against using furniture that is too small, as that can make the grouping appear lost and swallowed up by the space. Lisa Kahn of Lisa Kahn Designs says varying

TIPS TO MIX STYLES

1

KNOW YOUR BOUNDARIES. Limit the number of finishes and pay attention to the silhouette of each piece, suggests Kira Krümm of KDG-Kira Krümm & Co. “If you are mixing curved traditional lines with more streamlined and modern, go with solid-colored fabrics that simplify,” she says.

KEEP A SEMBLANCE OF ORDER. Be consistent with either the backgrounds, like the walls and ceilings, or the furniture, notes Jenny Provost of K2 Design Group. “When I mix period and contemporary furniture, I tend to keep the walls and ceilings neutral,” she says. “I like to use period appliques and trim work on white walls with modern furnishings placed carefully.”

LOOK AT SHAPES. “Mix square items with furniture that has rounded lines,” says Linda Burke of Linda Burke Interiors, who also suggests mixing contemporary, smooth, crisp furniture with rustic accents or with an intricately carved piece.

FOR ART LOVERS

When art is displayed correctly, design experts say it can add interest and bring your space to life. “For optimal visibility, consider location and viewing height and invest in quality framing that does not distract from the art, yet coordinates with other finishes,” says Kira Krümm of KDG-Kira Krümm & Co. How you display art also depends on the extent of your collection. Consider a display cabinet or étagère, decorative wall brackets, or a grouping on a cocktail table, suggests Shari Summers of Summerfields Interior Design. “If artwork is of great importance to you, design your space as though it were a gallery: white walls and ceilings, high-quality and directed lighting, and darker floors,” adds Jenny Provost of K2 Design Group. Or simply pick a wall and make it a gallery, suggests Dwayne Bergmann, Dwayne Bergmann Interiors. “I find hallways are always accepting of this type of installation,” he says. IN FLOORING, WOOD WOWS With the ever-expanding choices in wood flooring and tile products that look remarkably similar to wood, it is no surprise that these long-lasting floors remain popular. “It is great for people who want an instant feeling of warmth and texture in a space, as well as perfect for people with allergies,” says Lisa Kahn of Lisa Kahn Designs. “I am seeing wood floors as less rustic and more refined—more natural with oil finishes.” Overall, people are gravitating to more durable flooring, such as wood and stone—marble or shell stone, says Shari Summers of Summerfields Interior Design. “Painted wood floors in patterns are handsome and trending as well.”

WAKE UP WINDOWS “Sheers! Earthy, natural, breathable linens for softness” are on trend in window treatments, says Bethany O’Neil of Bethany O’Neil Interior Design. For privacy, O’Neil prefers woven shades, such as Conrad or Hartmann-Forbes, which offer multiple liner options. For convenience and 54

luxury, she suggests battery-operated or Lutron-wired treatments, which also eliminate the visual distraction of cords. Other designers agree the popularity of motorized treatments has been one the most significant changes when it comes to dressing windows, according to Jenny Provost of K2 Design Group. “In Southwest Florida, we have such great views,” she says, “making motorization more a requirement than a luxury.” Today’s consumer wants a more updated, clean look, adds Lisa Kahn of Lisa Kahn Designs. “Window treatments have really gone through a transformation,” Kahn says. “The fussy, multilayered look has been replaced with simple panels and tailored Roman shades.”

EXPERT TIPS ON HOW TO BLEND STYLE AND FUNCTION WHEN DESIGNING THIS IMPORTANT GATHERING AREA OF THE HOME

Consider these three fresh ideas for stylish, functional cabinetry when deciding on your next kitchen remodel. Sliding panels and doors. Not only can you tuck things away easily, you can also access items faster with this design option. Bethany O’Neil of Bethany O’Neil Interior Design says adding sliding panels of stone in place of a backsplash is great for hiding clutter and small 56

appliances. “We are seeing a greater use of the horizontal upper cabinets with slide-up covers and open shelving,” adds Linda Burke of Linda Burke Interiors, “more use of glass doors and metal cases or boxes.” Deep drawers. Add deep, pullout drawers in the bottom cabinets to make them much more functional, suggests Debbie DeMaria of Vogue Interiors. “They make it easy to find

things without breaking your back or having to get down on your knees to reach something at the back of a lower cabinet,” she says. Luxurious style. Make a unique statement with stunning back-painted glass doors or walnut drawers. “They are rich looking and, for cabinets, are like comparing a Kia to a Jaguar. I particularly love the walnut knife-block drawer,” says Jenny Provost of K2 Design Group.

RULES FOR KITCHEN DESIGN

1. LIGHTING MATTERS. “Stick to the basics: task first, then ambient, then decorative lighting—in that order,” says Jenny Provost of K2 Design Group. “Don’t forget night lighting; I use controlled under-cabinet LED lighting to provide just enough lumens to get me to my cold bottle of water in the middle of the night.”

2. FOCUS ON FUNCTION. “You can’t reach cabinets more than 8 feet high. Most European cabinets stop at 96 inches for a reason,” says Dwayne Bergmann of Dwayne Bergmann Interiors. He recommends planning the interior of cabinets and drawers at the start of the design process. 4. KNOW YOURSELF. Just because something is on trend, it doesn’t mean it’s right for you. “If fingerprints will make you nuts, do not be tempted by polished stainless steel doors or chrome hardware,” Provost says. 3. MAKE ROOM. One of the common mistakes is not allowing enough space to move around comfortably between cabinetry and walk by an open oven or dishwasher when someone is using it, says Linda Burke of Linda Burke Interiors. Another mistake to avoid is oversizing the kitchen islands so they are impractical, according to Faith Fix of Freestyle Interiors. 5. TAKE THE LONG VIEW. Remember to keep resale in mind. “Don’t make whim decisions when it comes to this huge investment. Think more about your property. What is in keeping with the architecture, for example? Use common sense to make choices that will appeal to a broader audience,” adds Provost.

HOW TO ADD PERSONALITY TO THE KITCHEN

DESIGNER TIPS FOR BACKSPLASH DESIGN

Accent colors. Add an accent color in an unexpected place, like the inside of cabinetry or the pantry. “Our client fell in love with a bold aqua accent color we incorporated into accessories and in a geometric-patterned wall covering for her pantry that added a playful statement to one of her favorite spaces,” says Kira Krümm of KDG-Kira Krümm & Co. Display personal items. Leave display cabinets at the top of upper cabinets open so they can be lit to display collected items. “It’s a fun way to show off interesting personal items and brings much-needed contrast and personality to the kitchen,” says Debbie DeMaria of Vogue Interiors. Clean look. Another popular kitchen element is zero-lined sinks, where the sink is at the same level as the countertop and is not undermounted. “It’s a feature that makes for a clean installation that does not involve any caulking,” says Debbie DeMaria of Vogue Interiors.

One way to make a style statement is through the backsplash, an important finishing touch and focal point. A stone slab backsplash offers a clean, luxurious look. “Solid surfaces in either large format or whole slabs” are on trend, says Dwayne Bergmann of Dwayne Bergmann Interiors. Some local designers point to laser-cut, marble-and-glass tiles as popular for the backsplash in patterns like quatrefoils and basket weaves. “Decorative mirror and sculptural tiles, such as wave tiles, are also emerging design trends,” adds Shari Summers of Summerfields Interior Design. Meanwhile, some classic, traditional styles also appear to remain popular. “Subway tiles are still an important trend, in glass, stone, or porcelain tile,” says Laurie Walter of Cinnabar Design.

INTERIOR DESIGNERS REVEAL THE TOP BATH AND SHOWER TRENDS AND SHARE THEIR SECRETS FOR ADAPTING THEM TO FIT YOUR HOME Whether you prefer a relaxing soak in the tub or a spa-like shower, there are many options to consider when deciding on a bath renovation. Shari Summers of Summerfields Interior Design sees popularity in sculptural freestanding tubs, which can create a stunning wow factor. “It’s like a piece of artwork for your bathroom,” she says. 60 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Showers are also larger and more luxurious than ever, according to Linda Burke of Linda Burke Interiors. “They are more like a spa with plenty of shower heads, music, and even colored lights,” she says. “Some are so large they could be a car wash!” adds Jenny Provost of K2 Design Group.

What to do with all that space? “Large walk-in showers with an entire wall clad in accent tile” is on trend, says Minka McDonald of Jinx McDonald Interior Designs. And when it comes to selecting tile, Bethany O’Neil of Bethany O’Neil Interior Design points to glass tile, both frosted and gloss, as sought-after options.

WE’VE BEEN HAVING A GREAT TIME USING MULTIPLE AND VARIED STONE AND TILE MATERIALS THAT CREATE A LANDSCAPE OF GREAT INTEREST WITH TEXTURE, SHEEN, STYLE, AND COLOR.

The options can appear endless—and daunting—when looking for the perfect tile in a bathroom remodel. Linda Burke of Linda Burke Interiors says three-dimensional tiles are “coming on strong” with many new selections in large format sizes, 12 by 16 inches and larger. Dwayne Bergmann of Dwayne Bergmann Interiors sees a movement toward even larger tile, such as 48- by 96-inch pieces. Meanwhile, Bethany O’Neil of Bethany O’Neil Interior Design favors Artistic Tile as the “hottest brand” right now. “They have amazing patterns and have figured out beautiful ways of mixing marble and glass,” she says. For flooring, where thickness is an issue, Shari Summers of Summerfields Interior Design says porcelain tiles that look like stone remain popular. “Also, in precision-cut mosaics, we are seeing mixtures of stones, or glass and stones, in intricate patterns used as insets with stone borders around the perimeter,” says Summers. While dimensioned tile with sculptured patterns are popular because of the texture they bring to the bathroom, Jenny Provost of K2 Design Group points out they can be more difficult to maintain, depending on the selection that is made. “We’ve been having a great time using multiple and varied stone and tile materials that create a landscape of great interest with texture, sheen, style, and color,” she says.

The powder room is an ideal area to reveal your personality. Designers say you can create the unexepcted by going dark and dramatic or bright and bold.

Whether you prefer a wet room or a luxurious master bath like the one in this image from Design Studio By Raymond, there are many options to consider in a renovation.

PLAY UP THE POWDER ROOM Unlike other areas of the home, design experts say powder rooms are a great space to splurge and show your personal style. “The powder room can be dark and dramatic,” says Kira Krümm of KDG-Kira Krümm & Co. “Since it is a small area, the walls can be adorned with a specialty finish and the flooring can be a unique accent tile.” The vanity is also a focal point where you can showcase your style. “Add a unique vanity and precious-stone tops that are lit from behind or underneath, which highlights nature’s creation in quartz and fossils,” says Bethany O’Neil of Bethany O’Neil Interior Design. When it comes to paint, this is an opportunity to be bold. “Try rich, saturated color on the walls, perhaps in a high sheen,” says Jenny Provost of K2 Design Group. “Create the unexpected. Small rooms can have huge personality.” NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | OCTOBER 2016

ALL ABOUT THE BED

WHAT’S TRENDING NOW ... Built-in, super-clean bed frames using platform or sandboxstyle frames to hide everything but the mattress are popular, according to Dwayne Bergmann of Dwayne Bergmann Interiors. “Linens need to be luxurious and lightweight,” he says, noting Matouk linens with bamboo duvet inserts as his picks. Jenny Provost of K2 Design Group is also seeing requests for platform beds from her clients, specifically in leather and textile combinations, such as the Tatlin bed by Minotti. Upholstered headboards are trending right now, adds Bethany O’Neil of Bethany O’Neil Interior Design. “Also, the footboard bed frame is disappearing,” she says. “More people prefer a headboard with side rails and a foot rail instead of a footboard, which eliminates the need for a bed skirt.”

The bedroom is a place to decompress from all the busyness of the day. Design experts say it can start as simply as painting the walls in calm colors. “A heavenly palette of soft blues, gray, and whites creates a mental escape from chaos,” says Bethany O’Neil of Bethany O’Neil Interior Design, who also suggests a Prana mattress and Legna sheets for the ultimate softness in linens. Dwayne Bergmann of Dwayne Bergmann Interiors also suggests luxurious sheets and bedding, as well as a calming, monochromatic color palette. When you add an electric fireplace on remote, blackout drapery, and three levels of lighting, that makes for a truly restful haven, according to Bergmann. Prefer tunes to ease into a relaxing evening? Jenny Provost of K2 Design Group suggests a built-in sound system, such as the Sonos smart speaker system. While music can be soothing, a bright television screen in the bedroom can have the opposite effect, keeping you up for too many precious hours. “Remove any distractions, such as a television, to allow your mind and body to relax and sleep restfully,” says Kira Krümm of KDG-Kira Krümm & Co.

ROOM TO SPARE

When decorating your guest bedroom, you can instantly add personality by introducing one unique accent color in each room, according to Kira Krümm of KDG-Kira Krümm & Co. “Also, offer the option of a headboard that can function as a king or can be pulled apart for two twin beds,” she says. When it comes to furniture, an accent chair is a must, says Bethany O’Neil, Bethany O’Neil Interior Design. “It will give a guest a nice place to throw their clothes, a place to put on their shoes, and an escape to relax from their host,” O’Neil says. member to focus on comfort. “Pay attention to the bedding, window treatments, and lighting,” says Dwayne Bergmann, Dwayne Bergmann Interiors. “If the bedding isn’t comfortable, the windows completely room darkening, and bedside lighting isn’t convenient, the rest doesn’t matter.” Finally, avoid the mistake of decorating your guest room with all your unwanted items. “Don’t use master bedroom hand-medowns,” says Jenny Provost of K2 Design Group, “Invest in luxury linens. It will make your guest’s stay memorable.”

BEDROOM DESIGN FAUX PAS TOO MUCH FURNITURE. “The bedroom should be the most intimate space in the home, but it is often way too large and completely overfurnished,” says Dwayne Bergmann of Dwayne Bergmann Interiors. “If a large master wing is available, create a dressing or waiting room with a beverage center, television, and comfortable seating or larger closets with functional areas within the closets to take out some of the unneeded space in the bedroom.”

JARRING COLORS. Red is the biggest mistake for a room designed for sleep. “There is no rest in a red room,” says Jenny Provost of K2 Design Group. “Bedrooms must be soothing, regardless of design style.”

3

PIECES ARE OUT OF PROPORTION. For example, some of the most common mishaps are nightstand heights that are not appropriate for a particular bed and selecting a bed that is too big for the room, according to Shari Summers of Summerfields Interior Design.

AWKWARD BED ANGLE. “Always place the bed so you see the foot of the bed when you walk into the bedroom,” adds Provost, though “this is sometimes adjusted for unique glass walls with incredible views.”

WAYS TO BRING THE

OUTDOORS IN

Usher in your surroundings by creating a visual flow. When Lisa Kahn of Lisa Kahn Designs first looks at a project, she studies the surrounding landscape for colors, textures, and shapes she can repeat inside. “Creating a visual tie through repetition is very effective at bringing the outside inside,” Kahn says. You can also use an accent color from the interior as the dominant color in the outdoor spaces, suggests Linda Burke of Linda Burke Interiors. In flooring, “wood-look” tile is popular as it mimics indoor hardwood flooring, according to Kira Krümm of KDG-Kira Krümm & Co. “Visually, this creates a

harmonious flow from the inside out,” she says. “My designs almost always feature continuation of flooring from inside to outside, if not always in material, then in color and sheen,” says Jenny Provost of K2 Design Group. “I also use outdoor drapes, which are weather-resistant and require little maintenance.” When it comes to walls in the outdoor living area, consider painting them in a warm and welcoming color that is also found inside. “It creates immediate continuity when the sliders are open and you’re moving back and forth between inside and outside,” says Debbie DeMaria of Vogue Interiors.

HOT SPOT Whether you choose a classic fire pit or a contemporary fire table, fire features are still increasing in popularity—a trend that shows no sign

of abating anytime soon. Fire features come in countless sizes, shapes, and styles to create a dramatic focal point when entertaining alfresco. “An outdoor fireplace instantly creates a cozy area to sit and talk,” says Debbie DeMaria of Vogue Interiors. Whether fueled by propane or natural gas, fire pits are also being built into a variety of gathering tables. “Larger fire pits can be used to anchor areas on the pool deck and create a terrific place for people to gather and socialize,” DeMaria adds. “Some builders are incorporating fire features, such as fire bowls or linear fire strips, in their pool and spa designs.” Or, suggests Linda Burke of Linda Burke Interiors, “Build a wall water feature and place a low fire feature along the bottom of it.” « Anna Welch contributed to this report.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR DESIGN INSPIRATION? A: When I start a project, I like to find one inspiring piece or idea that serves as a springboard for the rest of the design. This inspiration can be anything and strike anywhere. It could be a treasured sculpture found while traveling abroad, the fiery color of a newly budding flower, or even a memory. It is not necessarily about what I find inspiring, but what inspires my clients. I urge clients to bring their own experiences into the space while I incorporate those inspirations into the complete aesthetic design. Q: WHAT ARE THE LATEST TRENDS IN YOUR INDUSTRY? A: Tranquility is not just a trend, it’s a lifestyle. In today’s fast-paced world, more and more clients are asking for their home to be a true sanctuary, a place not only to

relax, but to “disconnect.” Calming color palettes inspired by nature combined with natural textures are elements that achieve this feeling of repose. When design and comfort are in harmony, the resulting space should strike an alluring balance of luxury and functionality. Q: WHAT IS YOUR AREA OF SPECIALIZATION? A: I believe design should be effortlessly timeless. I work closely with every client to achieve an enduring look that is as relevant today as it will be tomorrow. By fusing classical elements with a modern approach, the end result is quietly understated, sophisticated, and emotes a definitive elegance.

DESIGN WEST In Mercato Q: WHAT IS YOUR DESIGN INSPIRATION? A: For me, design is inspired by three factors. One is the fashion industry; textiles, color, and fashion trends cause interior design trends, which is why we’re proud to partner with Ralph Lauren Home at our Mercato design center. The second is nature, where I find harmony, symmetry, color, balance, scale, and proportion. Finally, I have a passion for travel. The more you are exposed to different cultures and countries, the deeper your creative well is. Q: WHAT ARE THE LATEST TRENDS IN YOUR INDUSTRY? A: Design has been moving toward the integration of natural, organic elements. Contemporary, clean lines mixed with earthy, natural accents are trending. Tonal “washed’ finishes give a soft feel that mixes well with rich, darker colors. Backgrounds are becoming lighter and more neutral, using layers of texture. Bigger outdoor

JINX MCDONALD INTERIOR DESIGNS, INC. Q: WHAT IS YOUR DESIGN INSPIRATION? A: For this project, we began with a vintage Vogue photo of a woman having the time of her life sailing. We wanted the condo to radiate this exuberance and to celebrate an active lifestyle. The blues in the sky and sea in the image inspired our color palette.

. Q: WHAT IS YOUR AREA OF SPECIALIZATION? A: Creating inviting and comfortable homes that are beautiful and timeless.

Q: WHAT ARE THE LATEST TRENDS IN YOUR INDUSTRY? A: One of the latest trends in our industry we incorporated in this project is an affection for bright, cool colors. Peppy teals and blues combined with driftwood and gray finishes, along with polished stainless steel and glass, create a current, coastal chic aesthetic.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR DESIGN INSPIRATION? A: My design inspiration comes from several places. Traveling is at the top of my list, as I love to experience other cultures and admire all the different architecture the world has to offer. I also find reading design books and magazines inspiring, but with websites like Houzz and Pinterest, we have great resources at our fingertips. My main inspiration usually comes from early selections, whether it be a stunning fabric or unique tile that has certain colors, textures, or shapes that establish a foundation for the flow and style of the home. Q: WHAT ARE THE LATEST TRENDS IN YOUR INDUSTRY? A: Most of our clients are looking for a coastal transitional look. We are using plenty of driftwood textures and

finishes from cabinetry to flooring. Taupe, blue/gray, and blush hues are also very dominant. Gold is making a comeback in a more matte finish in anything from plumbing fixtures to door hardware. Statement light fixtures are also a staple. Q: WHAT IS YOUR AREA OF SPECIALIZATION? A: We are a design-build residential construction firm specializing in the renovation of single-family homes and condominiums. We provide our clients with complete services, including a design studio, architecture, interior design, custom cabinetry, construction, and furnishings. We strive to deliver a holistic process in which our clients can discover the products and services available to create their dream home.

Whether one prefers to shop for choice ingredients to cook at home or dine out on a chef’s creation, Captain & Krewe, Naples, is one of several local spots that combine a restaurant with a well-stocked market. This month at the seafood shop, in addition to the fresh array of oysters and other fruits of the sea, shoppers and diners will be able to score stone crab claws when the season opens October 15. Chef Billy Hanzalik shares some of his recipes for sauces to make at home to complement oysters and crab claws (naples illustrated.com/seafoodsauces). Before season hits full throttle, why not take a deep breath with a mini getaway in our local paradise? No tropical retreat is complete without a pairing of sparkling pools and icy cocktails, of course. Chill with a signature concoction while lounging by the pool at one of these Naples beachfront resorts.

The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club

The pool complex (left), just steps from the sand and surf, is a major draw for hotel guests. A large recreational pool is perfect for play and exercise, while the smaller, more secluded, adults-only pool is just right for relaxing with a libation. THE DRINK: The Green Flash, a refreshing blend of melon liqueur, crème de banana, and lemonade in a nod to the legend that a bright green flash will appear on the horizon at the instant the sun sets on the Gulf when conditions are right. Culinary curiosity and appetites will be satisfied at the second annual Foodie Camp Naples (foodiecampnaples.com), created last year by members of Naples Originals, a group of independent, locally owned restaurants, along with St. Matthew’s House Executive Chef Kristofer Jubinville. It offers 90-minute classes at some top restaurants, with each chef bringing something unique to the experience. While providing food lovers with an up-close look at some of Naples’ best chefs and restaurants, the camp also gives back to the community. The event expands this year with twice the number of cooking classes than the inaugural event. Last year, the event sold out with 11 chefs and raised $7,000 that was divided equally between St. Matthew’s House and two culinary scholarships at Florida Gulf Coast University. Both will be the beneficiaries again. The organizers expect to include 20 chefs and more than 20 classes this time. Besides Jubinville, chefs who will be showing off their culinary chops include Alexander Bernard (Alexander’s), Lisa Boët (Chez Boët), Jason Goddard (Barbatella), Jeanne Harvey (The Real Macaw), Jesse Housman (Bistro 821), and Tony Ridgway (Ridgway Bar & Grill and Bayside Seafood Grill & Bar). This year’s camp will take place Mondays through Thursdays during October 17 to 27. —Jessica Torricelli

When you picture Sicily, or Sicilia (Suhchee-lee-uh) as the Italians say, you likely conjure up images of Mount Etna and scenes from the Godfather. For the wine enthusiast, modern Sicily brings to mind a refreshed notoriety as one of the most up-and-coming wine regions in Italy. Winemaking began in Sicily 3500 years ago with the Phoenicians and Greeks using the centrally-located island as a major trading stop on their journeys around the Mediterranean; Sicilian wines were readily promoted on and off the island. Today in Sicily, modern wine producers are rediscovering the distinctive characteristics of some of the most ancient and unparalleled indigenous wine grapes in the world. Red grapes include Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, Frappato and, of course, Nero d’Avola—considered the current “darling” of Sicilian winemakers with expressions that vary from extremely light-bodied to full and

rich. Notes of ripe black cherries, coffee, and rosemary balance with plenty of acidity, yielding the perfect accompaniment to Arancini (stuffed risotto balls which are breaded and deep fried) or classic eggplant-based dishes like Pasta alla Norma and Caponata. Native white grapes such Inzolia, Catarratto and Grillo are used to make crisp, dry wines from which modern producers coax great freshness and minerality; when paired with Sicily’s renowned local seafood, these wines provide a superb example of the “what grows together, goes together” maxim. At Angelina’s Ristorante, much like our friends in Sicily, we source fresh ingredients from local farms and fishing fleets to create vibrant, flavorful recipes which pair beautifully with the vast assortment of award-winning wines in our three-story wine tower. We invite you to join us and see for yourself why Angelina’s makes any occasion special.

A new restaurant tucked along the Dockside Boardwalk near Tin City has been luring diners with authentic Italian cuisine. Mino Pizzeria, Bar, Ristorante, a family-owned casual eatery, is headed by Massimo Puglielli, who left a long, highly successful career designing golf equipment to follow his passion for cooking. The heart of the kitchen is a massive pizza oven Puglielli discovered in Italy, which he favors for its consistency in baking up perfect pizzas. Although the range of pies is a main attraction, homemade pastas like lightas-a-cloud gnocchi and other specialties are top-notch. Petaluma in the Adelaide Hills

Up Down Under The roller coaster Australian wine business heads skyward with refined bottles BY MARK SPIVAK

The inside story of Australian wine is a heartbreaking tale of boom and bust. Veterans still shake their heads over “The Great Vine Pull of 1987.” After five years of uncontrolled surpluses, the government actually paid growers to remove Shiraz vines and leave their land barren. The result was the loss of thousands of acres of the best old-vine Shiraz. The industry recovered and another boom ensued, only to come crashing down in the recession of 2007-2008. Then a strong surge in the value of the Aussie dollar made entry-level wines such as Yellow Tail no longer seem like appealing bargains. To make matters worse, consumers moved toward a preference for a cleaner, more natural style of wine, which further weakened the appeal of Barossa’s high-alcohol, overripe, and heavily oaked reds.

Penfolds Wines produces both a Riesling and a Pinot Noir, a rarity in Australia.

118 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Australia’s best winemakers are finally coming up for air, with a caveat—their most successful wines now originate in cooler climates, regions that turn out grapes with higher acidity and more grace than the killer Shiraz with which we’re all familiar. One such area is the Adelaide Hills, sandwiched between the city and the Barossa Valley. Another is Tasmania, the southernmost island Down Under. Remember, in the Southern Hemisphere, the weather becomes cooler as you head south. As the Adelaide Hills region has expanded in recent years, wellknown wineries have established footholds in designated vineyard sites. Petaluma, founded in 1976 by Brian Croser, is making sparkling wine, Chardonnay, and Shiraz. Penfolds produces Thomas Hyland Riesling in the Adelaide Hills, and even finds the area cool enough to bottle a Reserve Pinot Noir—a rare grape variety in Australia. Although a number of smaller wineries—notably Geoff Weaver and Nepenthe— briefly gained a foothold in the American market, then saw their distribution dry up after 2008, the current demand for a fresher style of wine is opening up opportunities once again. One of the most intriguing operations in the Adelaide Hills is Shaw + Smith, which was founded more than 20 years ago by two cousins, Michael Hill Smith and Martin Shaw. The estate is unique in boasting two Masters of Wine. Smith was the first Australian

to pass the intense battery of exams. He is joined by David LeMire, who handles sales and marketing for both Shaw + Smith, as well as a second operation, Tolpuddle Vineyard in Tasmania. In this era of climate change, most wines on the market contain an alcohol level between 14.5 and 16 percent, but the Shaw + Smith offerings (with the exception of Shiraz) come in at a modest 12.5 percent—commonplace decades ago, but almost never seen now. The 2015 Sauvignon Blanc ($22) features what LeMire describes as “a touch of herbaceousness rather than a mouthful of grass.” The 2013 Pinot Noir ($35) has a core of ripe, succulent red fruits framed by earth notes and supple tannins, while the

rich and meaty 2013 Shiraz ($32) displays a range of succulent black fruits. The Shaw + Smith Tolpuddle winery has seen a renewal of vineyard activity over the past few decades. Tolpuddle’s 2014 Pinot Noir ($50) is ripe and edgy, with the fruit underlined by dried herbs, spice, and menthol. The 2013 Chardonnay ($48) is even better, with an explosion of citrus, melon, and green apple flavors, assertive and powerful but still balanced. Both are well worth seeking out. «

Abode WHAT TO PLANT NOW:

Tomatoes

When starting a vegetable garden, many home gardeners have their eyes on growing ripe, delicious tomatoes—and as we head into autumn, it’s the ideal time to start planting. From seed to fruit, the growing process for tomatoes can take 19 weeks in the fall, if not longer, and it actually doesn’t start in the garden, according to Monica OzoresHampton, associate professor of vegetable horticulture at the University of Florida’s Southwest Florida Research and Education Center in Immokalee. “You have to grow the tomatoes in a small container, with a specific germ medium [potting soil] that you can find at any gardening store, for six weeks,” she explains. “Once you have two leaves, you can move what we call ‘the transplant’ into the garden, for 13 weeks. It’s a twostep process. For best results, Ozores-Hampton says tomatoes require six hours minimum in the sun each day. If your green thumb or taste buds are yearning for heirloom tomatoes, she cautions that because of their thin skin and delectable taste, heirlooms are more susceptible to every disease known to tomatoes. For novice gardeners, she suggests starting with grape and cherry tomatoes, which are most resistant to diseases, and work their way up to other varieties. —Anna Welch

It’s that time of year again, when the community comes together to raise awareness and funds for those stricken with breast cancer. Below are a handful of local events to consider participating in this month, and beyond. Sip & Shop Sundays, October 2 Every Sunday throughout the month of October, a Bloody Mary Bar will be placed in the pavilion at Waterside Shops, serving Bloody Marys and mimosas to shoppers. All proceeds from the bar will benefit Bosom Buddies Breast Cancer Support Inc. (watersideshops .com, 239-598-1605) Naples Princess Sunset Dinner Cruise, October 8 Enjoy a night of dinner and dancing, live entertainment, and even hermit crab races, all to benefit Susan G. Komen Southwest Florida. Tickets are $125; seating is limited. (komenswfl.org) Seminole Casino Charity Slot Tournament, October 16 Test your luck at this charity tournament at Seminole Casino Hotel in Immokalee, which benefits Susan G. Komen Southwest Florida. A $10 donation gets you unlimited play on the slot machines during each threeminute round. (komenswfl.org, 239-658-1313)

Making Strides of Naples, October 22 Gather your friends and loved ones and sign up for this 5K walk to support the American Cancer Society. The noncompetitive walk will be followed by entertainment for the entire family. (makingstrides.acsevents .org, 239-261-0337, ext. 3854) Bark for Life of Naples, November 13 Bring your best canine friend for this fun walk, starting at the event lawn at Mercato, benefiting the American Cancer Society. Following the walk will be contests, games, and a luminaria ceremony—and treats for your pooch. (relay.acsevents.org, 239-261-0337) —Anna Welch

TAKE A DEEP

BREATH

High levels of stress have been known to send blood pressure soaring, but research has shown that deep and focused breathing can help. To receive the best results, experts say it’s important to practice breathing exercises regularly until they’re a habit, and not just turn to them during stressful moments. Get started with one of these three apps that offer guidance. BREATHING ZONE APP (breathing-zone.com) uses a clinically proven therapeutic breathing exercise to help bring your heart rate down, and if used daily, may help manage high blood pressure. The app includes voice instructions, as well as five calming guide sounds and timed sessions that range from five minutes to one hour. BREATHE2RELAX (t2health.dcoe.mil) allows you to input and record your stress levels simply by swiping left or right, and the app tracks it for you. This stress-management tool also teaches you diaphragmatic breathing, or “belly breathing,” meaning your stomach will rise while your chest remains motionless. Each breathing exercise, designed to signal the body to relax, can be tailored by the app to fit the comfort level of the individual. RELAX: STRESS AND ANXIETY RELIEF APP (saagara.com) guides you through slow breathing exercises for eight to 12 minutes, or deep breathing for five minutes. The app does the counting for you, offers guided meditation, and music cues remind you to switch to the next breathing phase, from inhale to hold your breath to exhale. —A.W.

8 Facts About Your Foot & Ankle Diabetic foot infections kill more people than cancer and AIDS combined. Paddleboarders with their dogs at Brookside Paddlesports

Flesh eating bacteria starting from the feet can kill. Dry, scaly, flaking skin may be a fungal infection.

Looking to mix up your yoga routine? Doga—yoga with your dog— is a unique way to bond with your best friend and still perfect your practice. You can step up the intensity if you can hold your dog while in the poses, says Barbara King, Doga instructor at BKS Yoga Studio in Naples (bksyogastudio.com). She says the focus is on engaging with your dog while doing yoga, not putting your dog in any of the poses. For those who prefer going out on the water, at Brookside Paddlesports (brooksidepaddlesports.com) your dog is welcome to join you for a paddle at no additional charge. When owner Sean Gallagher moved to Naples he realized there weren’t many pet-friendly water sports and set out to change that. He recommends paddleboarding with dogs weighing less than 90 pounds. On private tours, Naples Water Tours (napleswatertours.com) welcomes guests who want to bring dogs on dolphin, sunset, or adventure tours. Seeing dolphins is always a thrill, but experiencing local waters with your four-legged friend is even more so. —Jessica Torricelli

Yellowed, thick nails may be a serious infection. Collapsing arch, may be a sign of serious tendon damage. Ingrown toenails can lead to toe amputation if untreated. Bunions can lead to crippling arthritis. Heel pain can be treated fast.

PAWS AND REFRESH When enjoying all the fun in the sun with your pooch, don’t forget to pause and refresh. Veterinarians remind pet owners about the importance of clean paws, taking as much care as you would with your own feet. The Humane Society Naples suggests always doing a paw check during bath time, making sure you clean in between each of your dog’s toes, and then towel-dry the paws. When out for your daily walk in the heat, follow this simple test to see if the temperature is too hot for a walk. Put the back of your hand on the ground for five seconds, and if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your pup’s paws. Finally, on the hottest, driest days, remember to monitor your dog’s paws to make sure skin isn’t cracking. If you do see the skin starting to split, don’t just grab the lotion you would use for yourself, because it could lead to more issues. Veterinarians suggest checking your local pet supply store for pad moisturizers formulated for dry paws.

18th Annual The Naples Philharmonic in Halloween mode

Thrills and Chills Get ready for some ghoulish fun. From spooky haunted tours to a Halloween-themed 5K race, there’s something for the entire family—even pets. • For fans of spooky music, Artis—Naples continues a family holiday tradition, showcasing the Naples Philharmonic and Naples Ballet in the annual free Halloween Concert October 29. Costumes are encouraged. Festivities begin with a costume contest, followed by a parade and concert filled with fantastic characters and some of classical music’s eeriest tunes. (artisnaples.org) • Calling all princesses, ghosts, and witches: The Monster Mash at The Village on Venetian Bay will offer trick-or-treating and activities galore October 29. Kids will have a frightfully fun time with pumpkin decorating, arts and crafts, live entertainment, balloon art, and face painting. (venetianvillage.com) • Fifth Avenue South hosts the Sixth Annual Halloween Spooktacular on Fifth. A highlight will be the Night at the Museum Haunted House at The von Liebig Art Center, presented by the Naples Art Association. Enjoy live entertainment, music, and work the runway October 31 in costume contests for kids, grownups, and pets. Register in advance

(fifthavenuesouth.com) • Seeking the Great Pumpkin? Check out the St. Monica’s Episcopal Church annual Pumpkin Patch. Not only can you find the perfect pumpkin, there will also be a festival October 22. The patch is open October 7-31 every day. (stmonicasnaples.org) • Forget zombies and ghosts, the Gulf Coast Runners annual Halloween 5K Race at Fleischmann Park October 29 is sure to get you “running wild.” Attendees are encouraged to run in costume. After the 7:30 a.m. race, there’s a costume competition, refreshments, and family fun. (gcrunner.org) • Marco Island comes alive October 29 with tales from the past, illuminating the most mysterious characters of Collier County. The fourth annual Marco Murder and Mayhem Frightseeing Tour will make believers out of skeptics, says tour guide Gina Sisbarro. The Olde Marco Inn is the first stop, then the adventure moves through Marco Island’s cemeteries and historic landmarks. “It’s a wild ride, and I love the element of surprise,” says Sisbarro. (marcomurderandmayhem.com) • Instead of dressing up as lions, tigers, or bears, see the real deal at Naples Zoo’s Boo at the Zoo, October 21-23. Kids can trick-or-treat at booths set up by nonprofits and eco-friendly companies, where they will receive candy or tokens to participate in “Boo Town for Kids” activities. There will also be costume contests. (napleszoo.org) • Waterside Shops hosts the yearly Boo Bash October 28. Festivities include music, stilt walkers, trick-or-treating, and more. Cheers to the freakin weekend!

1. Perfect afternoon in Naples: Check in to The Ritz-Carlton, Naples and pretend I was on vacation. 2. Favorite artists: Eric Forstmann’s art inspires me. I’m typically drawn to contemporary/abstract art, but I also have a passion for photography, and he melds the two art forms beautifully.
