It is no surprise we live in Paradise. Naples has received so many rounds of public applause for being among the best places to live that I have lost count. Yes, one of the obvious reasons is our beautiful beaches, but there is much more to Naples’ charm than a stunning coastline. What appears to attract—and keep—people in our area is the everexpanding cultural scene. Especially for a small town, there is a big-time focus on the arts that continues to expand in the region. For example, we now have two annual international film festivals, with Center for the Arts Bonita Springs launching the latest one last year. During the summer, the long-anticipated Southwest Florida Performing Arts Center opened its doors in Bonita Springs as well. Meanwhile, a multitude of enduring local arts organizations, large and small, continue to evolve in new ways. In this issue, we talk to those who are shaping our local cultural scene for a glimpse into who they are and how they plan to continue to satiate the cultural appetites of our discerning community. Meet the “Ringleaders of the Arts,” beginning on page 72. When you’re ready to start soaking up the cultural offerings to fill your calendar, peruse our annual preview for highlights of the exciting arts season ahead. It’s “Showtime,” starting on page 60, and this year’s 12-page guide includes a bevy of exhibitions, events, and performances covering the stage, film, and visual arts, as well as muchanticipated concerts with iconic musicians and entertainers. There is truly something for everyone. As you flip through the pages of this issue, you’ll also notice a refinement. We’re introducing The Goods, a department that will appear in every issue, where we turn to a local independent retailer for inspiration and trends covering all aspects of the Neapolitan lifestyle. Turn to page 44 to find out who we’re featuring this month and what inspiration is in store for you.

Q&A

NANCY LOPEZ

Insider

When PGA Hall of Fame golfer Nancy Lopez first met Diana Riley at lunch during the CME Group Tour Championship at TwinEagles in 2012, Lopez recalls being impressed by the Naples resident’s passion. Riley founded Swinging With Purpose, a nonprofit that works with area golf clubs to raise dollars for local charities. In 2013, the golf legend, who found Riley’s powers of persuasion irresistible, got involved in Swinging With Purpose’s first fundraiser, benefiting The Shelter for Abused Women & Children. She’s come to Naples every year since to take part in SWP events. We talked with Lopez, who comes to Naples for two fundraisers this month, the Battle of the Sexes, in which she and pro golfer Chris DiMarco will captain teams of men and women in a fun competition, and a luncheon. —Kat Smith NI: What are your thoughts about golf, Naples, and charity? Lopez: When people say Naples, you think golf. People like Diana, as well as the people I have met through her, most have a lot of money they’ve worked hard to get. Now they want to help people who don’t have the blessings they have. I like being surrounded by that. The people I’ve met through Swinging With Purpose really care about the world outside their world. When did you first become involved in philanthropy? My main charity is AIM for the Handicapped—Adventures in Movement. I met Jo Geiger, the director who created the AIM method, which is teaching handicapped children through music, when I lived in Cincinnati. She asked if I could be a national ambassador. I was 20 years old, and I told her I didn’t just want to put my name on the pamphlet, but I would think about it. After a year of great golf and winning nine tournaments my rookie season, I decided to visit her at AIM. I met a husband and wife there who had two Down’s syndrome children, one they had, and one they adopted to raise with their child. That touched me, and also seeing what AIM does, I was pretty much hooked. What lessons do you have for young women? I was always a goal setter, and tell young people to set goals. Being Hispanic, I tell girls, don’t let anybody tell you because of the color of your skin you can’t accomplish something. My dad always told me, if you have a good heart and good work ethic, your color doesn’t matter. Children of any race can’t go out into the world with the attitude they don’t have a chance. I’ll try to do whatever I can to help and make people aware of Swinging With Purpose and AIM for the Handicapped. It’s fun to be involved, and when I lay my head down at night, I know I’m helping people.

Swinging With Purpose Founded in 2012 by Naples resident and retired entrepreneur Diana Riley, Swinging With Purpose (swingingwithpurpose.org) combines passion for golf with passion for helping others. It has raised more than $250,000 to date to benefit several grassroots organizations that support women and kids in need, including The Shelter For Abused Women & Children, PACE Center for Girls–Collier at Immokalee, Our Mother’s Home, Providence House, Dress For Success, and Laces of Love. The SWP board carefully researches each group, making donations based on the charity’s specific needs.

Tea Time

A calm oasis flooded with art and light occupies space in an inconspicuous yellow building on the corner of Eighth Avenue South and Tenth Street South. Artist Robin Joy Riggsbee and a Robin Joy Riggsbee (robinjoy.com), a transplant from sample of her work, left New York’s West Village, recently opened a charming studio where visitors can peruse original art and a variety of goods—cards, textiles, ceramics, jewelry, and books—printed with her whimsical, minutely intricate drawings and paintings. The well-traveled Riggsbee offers more than art, though. She radiates goodwill and likes nothing more than to welcome guests in her studio. Visitors enjoy lovely music played and recorded by Riggsbee on her player piano as they sip a unique blend of tea served in a Chinese pot from a collection she amassed when living in Hong Kong. The studio is open to the public Sundays, 1-4 p.m.; Thursdays and Fridays, 2-4 p.m.; and by appointment. —Kat Smith Leeza Arkhangelskaya shows off one of her custom fascinators to one of her two adopted cats.

ART OF GOLD

Marking a golden anniversary, the Naples Artcrafters (naplesartcrafters.com) will be recognized by the City of Naples for 50 years of service to the local arts community. Mayor Bill Barnett has proclaimed November 12 Naples Artcrafters Day, with a ribbon-cutting at the group’s show in Cambier Park that day. Founded by five women in 1967, the group now produces seven monthly art fairs a year, October through April, featuring 70 to 80 artists. The all-local, juried members work in several media, including painting, pottery, sculpture, and jewelry. The nonprofit group distributes grants and donations from funds it raises to other community organizations, such as the Naples Recreation Department, Harry Chapin Empty Bowls Food Drive, Collier County Schools art programs, and United Arts Council of Collier County. “We are a member-supported organization operated by local artist volunteers,” says Clark Lindberg, the group’s president. “Our shows are the only ones featuring only local artists and operated by local artists. We have a history of promoting and supporting our local fine artists and fine craftspersons.” —K.S.

The social season arrives with a slate of parties that call for eye-catching accessories. Some to consider: custom fascinators by Leeza Arkhangelskaya, who has an expert eye for the artistic. Arkhangelskaya, who along with her mother, Olga, founded East West Fine Art galleries at Mercato and Bigham Galleria, says the first fancy topper she made about three years

ago nabbed her a “best hat” prize at a Derby event. Local ladies took note, asking for bespoke creations for themselves, and she started a small business. Recently Arkhangelskaya discovered the Naples Cat Alliance, a local no-kill shelter, and was struck by the nonprofit organization’s mission. “I decided to participate as a volunteer,” she says, “first in the capacity of a foster parent. I was warned that the foster parents fall in love with the animals, and do not give them up. This happened to me.” Delighted with her two adopted felines, she decided to donate the proceeds from the sale of the fascinators to the shelter. This year’s collection is bird-themed, inspired by her kittens’ attraction to bird videos on YouTube. “The fascinators are one-of-a-kind, and usually tall and prominent,” she says. “I create singular designs, or create custom pieces that coordinate with a certain outfit.” (239-821-9459) —K.S.

Escape GO FOR By Daphne Nikolopoulos When Utah’s Park City and Canyons merged last year, the nation’s largest ski resort was born. That was big news for skiers, who were blown away by the resultant infrastructure offering access to 7,300 skiable acres with 300 trails across a 22-mile network connected by a whopping 41 lifts. Add to that some of the world’s best powder, and it’s easy to see why this is the Promised Land for carvaholics. But the new and improved Park City is only part of Utah’s winter picture. About 20 minutes from Park City, Deer Valley offers equally impressive terrain in a more intimate resort. Not to be outdone in the expansion category, Deer Valley bought Solitude Mountain Resort last year and immediately improved infrastructure by cutting a new ski run and installing a high-speed quad. The acquisition is particularly sweet for snowboarders, who have traditionally been excluded from Deer Valley but welcomed at Solitude. What does all this mean? Skiers and snowboarders of every level now have the ultimate winter playground. Turn the page for a few tips on making the most of the Utah winter experience on and off the slopes.

THE SNOW This month marks the beginning of ski season. Follow the powder trail to Park City and Deer Valley for epic winter adventures.

Canyons Village houses one of the best ski and snowboard schools (above, right) in the country. Grand Summit Hotel (center) is conveniently located to the school and all the best lifts. Red Tail Grill (above) is a prime skiers’ hangout.

BEST for First Timers Park City Ski and Snowboard School at Canyons Village is a superb way to teach the next generation. The instructors are competent and patient, covering balance and kid-friendly stopping and turning techniques. An area at the bottom of the piste is designated for learners, who use a magic carpet for maximum efficiency during lessons. Most kids can progress to beginner level after one or two days in first-timer territory. The school is located at the back of Grand Summit Hotel, which offers ski-in/ski-out convenience and access to Orange Bubble Express (a gloriously heated lift) and Red Pine gondola. Red Tail Grill, the hotel’s alfresco terrace, is a great spot for a lunch break and observation of the little ones in action. (parkcitymountain.com)

Robert Redford’s Zoom restaurant serves American comfort food in a warm, rustic atmosphere.

BEST Celeb-Spotting If you happen to be in Park City during the Sundance Film Festival (January 19-29), pop in to Zoom, Robert Redford’s all-American restaurant on Main Street. You never know whom you’ll run into at the bar. If nothing else, the place serves the best buffalo onion rings and elk strip loin in town. (zoomparkcity.com) 48 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Above and right: The St. Regis Deer Valley is perfectly poised for ski-in/ski-out access and awesome mountain views.

BEST Skier’s Buffet After a morning on the slopes, you need fuel—and lots of it. In Deer Valley, ski into Stein Eriksen Lodge for one of the best buffets in the mountains. The Stein’s Glitretind Restaurant presents a spread with creative salads, cold seafood options, carving stations, hot dishes, roasted vegetables, fish taco stations, desserts to die for … You name it, it’s there, and it’s plentiful. (steinlodge.com)

BEST View (and then some) The St. Regis Deer Valley offers the best views of the Wasatch and ski-in/ski-out access on the Deer Hollow ski run. The suites are exquisite, as you’d expect from the St. Regis, but the real lure here are the curated activities. Escape Scenes from Salt Lake (clockwise from top left): Grand America Hotel’s courtyard; mountains dwarf the skyline; The Leonardo, a highly original science and tech museum; Natural History Museum of Utah, an architectural marvel.

SALT LAKE World Class The gateway city to the ski resorts is more exciting than its reputation might suggest. Salt Lake City has a burgeoning foodie scene, luxe hotels, and museums worthy of a major metro area. Hitting the city after a ski vacation has become common practice. For old-school glamour, Grand America wins with Carrara marble, tapestries, and Richelieu furniture. Rooms are arranged around a courtyard with formal gardens. From there it’s a walk to hipster hangouts like Eva (creative small plates and artisan cocktails) and buzzing American bistros like Bambara (try the cast iron–roasted clams). A personal favorite is Finca, a superb Spanish resto sourcing its food from local producers and serving it in a haute-urban space. (visitsaltlake.com)

A Faena Balance

Faena’s thoughtful urbanism is transforming Miami’s Mid-Beach into a hub for culture By Daphne Nikolopoulos

Puerto Madero, the once-downtrodden docks district that has become one of Buenos Aires’ hottest neighborhoods, put Alan Faena on the new-urbanism map. That success story led to others around Argentina, but Faena’s most ambitious project to date is blossoming like a perfect red rose in Miami Beach. The Faena District, composed of a luxury hotel, residences, a cultural forum and a shopping “bazaar” designed by Pritzker Prize–winning architect Rem Koolhaas, and a collaborative and experimental arts program, is literally transforming Mid-Beach. Though hotels and residences go up almost daily in Miami, a project of this scope—and careful detail—is groundbreaking in the area between 32nd and 36th streets. It’s a story that goes beyond luxury to embrace authentic arts experiences and cultural inclusiveness. While portions of the district are still being phased in, the hotel has opened to raves. Here are our top three reasons to check in now:

1

The Tierra Santa Healing House is a spa, but its healing rituals put it on a whole new level. Inspired by the shamanic traditions of South America, treatments like Tree of Life Vibrations and The Sacred Warrior offer deep relaxation and mind-body alignment. A must: Palo Santo & Sound Bowls, which combines Palo Santo body oil with seven sound bowls selected by a shaman. The bowls’ vibration and sound awaken and tune the body’s natural frequencies. (faena.com/ miami-beach)

NIK KOENIG

The Faena hotel, whose visual narrative was conceived by filmmaker Baz Luhrmann and costume designer Catherine Martin, is a true work of art. Spaces make subtle nods to Art Deco but the details are all twenty-first century. Red velvet, lush embroidery, and tiger prints don’t exactly say “coastal cool,” but they do coalesce into a sumptuous amalgam. Art is a major part of the aesthetic. Works by Damien Hirst and Jeff Koons get a lot of attention, but the most impressive is arguably Juan Gatti’s series of monumental murals in the lobby. Clockwise from top left: Luxe textures and a bold red palette define the rooms and suites (also right); Gnosis, one of eight lobby murals by Juan Gatti; Gone but not Forgotten by Damien Hirst commands attention in the outdoor space; Faena Forum promises to redefine Miami’s cultural scene.

COPYRIGHT OMA

3

The cultural heart of Faena District, Faena Forum opens this month. Located across the street from the hotel, the Forum is the centerpiece of Faena’s vision for Miami Beach’s cultural renaissance. The Forum will feature an intriguing processional with artists and thought leaders from around the world. One of the first performances, Conga Irreversible by Cuban art collective Los Carpinteros, will feature choreography to conga music played in reverse. (faenaart.org)

Aston Martin’s first new car in more than a decade, the 2017 DB11, is perfectly suited for a certain British master spy By Howard Walker

Pay attention 007, we have a car for you. It’s an Aston Martin, naturally. But this is the latest DB11 and it’s new from the ground up, with a special bonded (wink, wink) all-aluminum chassis. Yes, we thought you’d like that. As you might expect, it’s rather fast. It has a new twin-turbocharged V-12 engine that delivers 600 horsepower. It’s powerful enough to keep up with your lifestyle—zooming from zero to 60 in 3.8 seconds and topping out at 200 mph. That speed would leave even you a little shaken and stirred, 007. To make sure this new DB11 stays on the ground at 200 mph without needing one of those irritating spoilers on the boot lid, Aston Martin came up with a device called Aeroblade. And yes, it sounds a lot like one of those pesky Dyson hand dryers, but it’ll do for now. Here’s how it works: Air is channeled through vents at the base of each side window then ducted through the bodywork before venting as a highpressure wall of air from an aperture in the boot lid. It’s like a virtual spoiler. Very clever, indeed. You might miss the ejector seat from your much-loved Aston Martin DB5, 007, but it was far too theatrical. As for your onboard machine guns and nail-thrower—those were nixed, too. But this new DB11 isn’t without gadgets. It’s now equipped with the technology to corner faster, allowing you to choose between three dynamic 54

modes—GT, Sport, and Sport Plus—that alter throttle, steering, and suspension response. It quickly changes the car from a relaxed grand tourer to something altogether more licensed to thrill. Use Sport Plus as often as you like, James. Maybe next time, it will help you get away from that awful Mr. Hinx and his Jaguar C-X75. One piece of technology that might excite even you, 007, is the 360-degree “bird’s-eye” camera with an auto-park assist feature. It might even help you avoid damage when you POWER FILE try to squeeze into spaces that PRICE: $211,995 are obviously far too small. No worries—the new DB11 has a larger interior than the D89 it replaces. It has a longer wheel-

base that allows for bigger door openings, making it easier—and faster—to get in and out. The stylish chaps at Aston Martin did a splendid job shaping the DB11’s body, too. It looks thoroughly modern and, yes, quite seductive. Yet it is still instantly recognizable as a DB. The roof strake, for instance, flows backward, giving the impression that it is floating above the body. There you have it, 007—your new DB11. Southwest Florida Performing Arts Center

Black Diamond Burlesque troop performers at the grand opening.

Performing arts in the Naples area took a giant step in June, when the Southwest Florida Performing Arts Center opened in a vacant Bonita Springs building that has been renovated and expanded by owner Brien Spina. A familiar name in local entertainment, Spina is known for founding the long-running Off The Hook Comedy Club, which opened in Marco Island and later moved to North Naples. Gulfshore Opera’s Steffanie Pearce calls the new center a “badly needed addition to the local arts scene.” The opera company has formed a partnership with the new venue, as did WGCU Public Media and the Southwest Florida Symphony. “We’re happy about [these partnerships],” says Spina. “People understood we are capable of [staging] that quality of performance.” The SWFL PAC season’s calendar reflects Spina’s history with comedy, bringing in big-name stars such as Jackie Mason February 21, but also will showcase live music. Some of the performances package dinner with the show in the center’s stand-alone Teatro restaurant, created by celebrity chef Michael Psilakis. (swflpac.com)

The visual component, an art exhibit titled “A Tragic Love Affair,” will be on display at The Baker Museum (artisnaples.org).

THE CLASSICS Classic theater never goes out of fashion, especially with a little reinvention in local venues. Take, for instance, the My Fair Lady production at Gulfshore Playhouse (gulfshoreplayhouse.org) November 12-December 11. The company adapts the classic musical to its small space with a 10-person cast and two pianos. For a more traditional interpretation of the show, check out the Naples Players’ March 1-April 2 production. Later in the season, Gulfshore Playhouse stages its version of The Hound of the Baskervilles—a “comedic take on an old classic” that will “leave you howling.” At Artis—Naples, which expands its Broadway season this year to five performances, 42nd Street takes the stage December 26-29, telling the 1930s timeless tale of sudden stardom in the big city. Delving yet further into the past to the 1920s within a different genre, Opera Naples performs Puccini’s final work, Turandot, at the Wang Opera Center, Naples, November 9.

For its second year, the Bonita Springs International Film Festival (artcenterbonita.org/filmfestival.htm) moves to January 26-29, 2017. The weekend event kicks off with a red-carpet film screening, catered cocktail party, and live music at the Centers for the Arts’ Moe Auditorium & Film Center. The festival will feature more than 50 films from 20-plus countries, at least two of which will be Florida premieres. “Our mission has always been to feature all the arts—music, theater, art, dance, and film. This year, four of our award-winning films speak about music, art, and dance, as well as helping us experience film as art,” says Susan Bridges, president of Centers for the Arts Bonita Springs, which hosts the festival. Along with films, festivalgoers can attend workshops on directing, screenwriting, and animation; Q&A sessions with visiting filmmakers, directors, writers, and producers; and guest speakers, including film critics, filmmakers, and directors. The event culminates Sunday, January 29, with the Awards Presentation and Filmmaker’s Party.

Critter Inspiration For Tim Cotterill, perhaps better known as The Frogman, amphibious creatures leaped into his art. His bronze frogs with their fanciful patinas are collected around the world. Each year the artist makes a pilgrimage from California to Gallery One (galleryonenaples.com) in Naples to greet fans. This year’s event will take place February 8, from 5 to 8 p.m. At Centers for the Arts Bonita Springs, crocodilians star through December 31 in the “Crocodilian Scratchboards–Paintings and Drawings of John Agnew.” Engraving-like scratchboard renderings, field sketches, and paintings give the intriguing, toothy creatures dimension in this scaly display.

From Broadway productions to opera, film festivals, and fine art exhibitions, the Greater Naples area boasts a thriving arts community. Over the years, the ever-expanding cultural scene has received national attention. Naples was highlighted in 100 Best Art Towns in America by John Villani, and it has repeatedly received accolades as one of the best small towns in the country, in part because of the focus on the arts. Naples’ long-standing arts organizations are constantly evolving with fresh offerings and initiatives for growth. Here we spotlight the ringleaders who have been shaping the local arts culture.

SUSAN BRIDGES

KRISTEN COURY

President, Centers for the Arts Bonita Springs “It may look like I’m driving the boat, but really it’s them, the people who are telling me what they want from the arts locally,” says Susan Bridges. “We utilize a lot of ad hoc committees. Plus we do one or two surveys per year on specific topics. We listen to what everyone has to say and those voices are what shapes our planning, our path, vision, and future.” When Bridges, a visual artist and administrator from Chicago, took the part-time position in 1998 to steer what was then the Art League of Bonita Springs, it had 350 members and no facilities. Today the Centers for the Arts boasts 2,300 members and two separate campuses for visual and performing arts. “Bonita Springs has a cornucopia of gated communities, but also a lot of people who don’t have that privileged capacity,” says Bridges, noting the organization’s “arts for all” mission. It encompasses a broad range of programs for every age and social strata, including free outreach programs and scholarships. In a continuing effort to grow, last year it opened a film center and established an inaugural international film festival. This season it’s launching STAGE IT!, a playwriting initiative culminating in a 10-minute play competition. “It’s a good page to add to our book,” she says.

Founder and Producing Artistic Director, Gulfshore Playhouse “The baby is growing. It is now a young adult,” says the woman who founded Gulfshore Playhouse in 2004, working solo out of the back of her condo. At the threshold of an exciting new campaign to build a highly accessible performance hall, Kristen Coury can hardly contain her maternal pride. “My vision is a beautiful, Tony Award–winning, regional theater,” she says. Coury, who worked in London and New York as an actor, director, and theater administrator, is all about community. Gulfshore Playhouse’s Synergy Series goes beyond the play with free in-house discussions and script sessions at local libraries. Its ThinkTheatre program takes acting to the schools, from grades pre-K to 12. “I view theater as a sacred place,” says Coury. “I feel it's important our new theater building is a space that is accessible to those in our region, not only for those who have a ticket to a performance.” Besides two theaters, the new hall features a “community space”—a bar, café, art gallery, and atrium that the public can visit and enjoy.

NEW TO THE SCENE

The focus on enriching the arts culture is expanding beyond Naples. During the summer, Southwest Florida Performing Arts Center in Bonita Springs opened its doors with a splash. After three years in the making, the center’s visionary, Brien Spina, launched the 27,000-square-foot venue, which includes a 400-seat theater as well as a restaurant led by celebrity chef Michael Psilakis. The center will host a robust variety of performances this season, including comedy acts, concerts, opera, and other theater productions, in addition to offering space for private events. As CEO of the new venue, Spina co-owns the center with his father, Santo.

STEFFANIE PEARCE General and Artistic Director, Gulfshore Opera “Making opera inclusive and accessible has always been our mission,” says Steffanie Pearce. “This season we have a new slogan: exploring the art of the human voice. We’re certainly doing chestnuts of grand opera repertoire, but also branching out with all our highly trained classic singers.” As a classically trained singer and accomplished worldwide opera performer, Pearce brings her self-created operatic enterprise into its third season and invents fresh ways to lure new audiences from Collier, Lee, and Charlotte counties, which Gulfshore Opera encompasses. “Harmony Choir for at-risk children is as much a social program as a music program,” she says, explaining one of her outreach projects. From dinners with a side of opera and “opera speed-dating” to a Madame Butterfly full-scale opera performance, Pearce promises a season that reaches out to every segment of local society. “I’m really excited about the diversity of programming this year,” she says. 74

MARK DANNI Founding Artistic Director, TheatreZone Leaving a thriving New York career as a musician, conductor, and director to expand the Community School of Naples’ theater program: Mark Danni’s life took a serious detour in the early 2000s that included a baby and then twins. He agreed to the school’s offer on the condition he could start his own resident equity theater company. Entering its twelfth season, TheatreZone has steadily grown a loyal following, which has Danni looking forward to a new location of its own. “Our wonderful collaboration with Florida Gulf Coast University started with faculty members auditioning,” says Danni, who still runs the Community School’s program. Soon students became involved in backstage duties and eventually acting. “If you’re a season ticketholder, we take you on a journey through a number of genres that haven’t been in Southwest Florida for a while,” Danni says, noting that this year at least half of their patrons subscribed for the entire season without even knowing the lineup of performances.

CEO and President, Artis—Naples For Kathleen van Bergen, it came down to a choice between Jordache jeans and violin lessons at age 4. “They both cost $39.95,” she recalls. “My dad often joked that the jeans would have been cheaper in the long run.” Choosing art set her on a path to sharing art with the community at large and with youths, who, like herself at a young age, have never experienced live performance. Underscoring a commitment to quality programming that serves the entire community, she has inspired a multilayered calendar of performances at Artis—Naples, including an Around Town series, free community days on the Artis—Naples campus, a chamber orchestra series outreach, free Naples Philharmonic Orchestra performances, youth musical performance groups, and collaborations with Florida Gulf Coast University and Naples Botanical Garden. “Going forward, we are committed to building an organization that’s sustainable given changes in demographics,” says van Bergen. “Expect no major changes in programming. We remain committed to a wide variety of genres.”

JON FITZGERALD

AIMEE SCHLEHR

Naples International Film Festival In his inaugural year at NIFF’s helm, Jon Fitzgerald enumerates three longrange goals: to “grow the festival to the capacity of the public demand that already supports it with more days and screens”; increase “caused-based” film programming and partner with local charitable organizations to step up viewer proactivity; and get kids more involved. A filmmaker himself, Fitzgerald has entered NIFF three times, in 2011 winning an award for best documentary. His later acclaimed Warrior One documents a group of underprivileged young women from Naples empowered through “adventure therapy.” He began writing films therapeutically in college and now works on both the business and creative side of filmmaking, having consulted in various industry capacities. Among Fitzgerald’s proudest accomplishments? Opening more opportunities for emerging filmmakers by co-creating Slamdance Film Festival in Utah 1995 and his social-impact filmmaking through his current enterprise Cause Pictures.

CEO and Executive Director, Naples Art Association “My background is in accounting,” says Aimee Schlehr. “I started at the Naples Art Association as the CFO. Art terrified me … They told me the more you’re around art, the more it will speak to you.” Today Schlehr brims with passion for the arts as a means to self-fulfillment. “Art makes [you] a more whole person,” she says. Creating and enjoying art has been proven to slow the mental aging process, and has led NAA to begin free art outreach programs at the Naples Senior Center this January. NAA also collaborates with the Multiple Sclerosis Center of Southwest Florida and Lighthouse of Collier to reach diverse audiences. What’s next? It has partnered with Lighthouse this fall on an exhibit for the visually impaired.

MAESTRO RAMÓN TEBAR Artistic Director, Opera Naples “In the last seasons, the company has taken many risks that have worked with our audiences, with more diversity in the repertoire, more international singers, and more collaborations with the Naples Philharmonic,” says Ramón Tebar, a driving force with Opera Naples since 2014. Opera Naples isn’t just about opera anymore. As Opera Naples enters season 11, Tebar, considered one of the leading Spanish conductors of his generation, has a vision to “bring new things, a wider span of styles, and all kinds of different ways of presenting lyric events from, of course, opera, which is our main musical activity, to concerts and master classes.” Tebar conducts orchestras around the world. This season he will conduct three of the productions from the Opera Naples seasonal program he designed. “[I also] cast the guest artists and strive to raise the musical and artistic level of the company,” Tebar says.

FRANK VERPOORTEN Director and Chief Curator, The Baker Museum, Artis—Naples A Belgium native, Frank Verpoorten has served in esteemed curator roles both in Brussels and New York. His passion for the arts is rooted in family. “An uncle I loved very much was the curator of a museum in Belgium,” says Verpoorten, recalling why his initial interest in the arts began. Before coming to Artis—Naples nearly four years ago, he served as government cultural attaché in Flanders, Belgium. In his current position, he is able to collaborate with the performing arts in unique ways. “We enjoy a relationship with the music director to plan and develop

exhibitions and arts programs around multidisciplines,” he says. “This year, for example, one theme is ‘Muses,’ with an art exhibition relating to Alma Mahler and two concerts featuring the works of her husband, composer Gustav Mahler.” Verpoorten says at times he also likes to showcase artists whose work still needs to be championed. Still, his criteria for curating exhibitions focus on remaining “well-rounded and balanced, not veering too far from our own collection of modern twentieth-century art.” « NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | NOVEMBER 2016

Umbria is affectionately known as the “Green Heart of Italy.” It is the only land-locked region in central and southern Italy and even looks a little bit like a heart! This small region is rather rustic in comparison to its neighbors, but what it lacks in sophistication is more than made up for in raw natural beauty. In the middle ages, the popes would flee the heat of summer at the Vatican to vacation here. Mountains, rolling hills, rivers and crystal clear lakes cover the region. Wines of the area include Orvieto, a white blend of uniquely Italian indigenous grapesTrebbiano, Verdello, Grechetto and Canaiolo, which is clean, crisp and fresh. Red wines include Sagrantino di Montefalco, produced from 100% Sagrantino, one of the most tannic grapes on planet earth, and Torgiano Rosso Riserva, which is comprised mostly from the Sangiovese grape. All of these wines pair

beautifully with the local cuisine, such as lentils, dried pastas, chocolates, Chiuscolo (soft, spreadable sausage), eels from Lake Trasimeno, game birds and truffles. In fact, more truffles and olive oil are produced here than anywhere else in Italy! Umbria is slowly being discovered by people in the know! In fact, wine producers in Tuscany, such as Antinori, have been buying property in next door Umbria for its excellent land value and high quality soils for growing some of the tastiest and best value wines in Italy! At Angelina’s Ristorante, we use as many local ingredients as possible- fresh fish from the Gulf of Mexico, locally grown produce, eggs and chickens. We have an extensive wine collection with the largest selection of Italian wines in the area, as well as a broad selection of wines from other regions of the world. Come dine with the Angelina’s family where every occasion is special!

FOR TRUFFLES

D’AMICO & PARTNERS

The truffle is one of the world’s most prized foods. People have been fascinated by the delicacy since antiquity. Even Greek biographer Plutarch weighed in, writing “Lightning, when touching the ground, sends growth to truffles, which are unlike plants.” Today the origins of the fab funghi are well known, but they are no less coveted. Naples diners can savor the earthy gems this month at Campiello Ristoranate & Bar (campiello. damico.com), where chef Mike Dalton features them in a special menu. He creates dishes like this wild mushroom risotto with black truffles at this time of year because they are in season in Europe, and he likes to give customers “a chance to feel that vibe here in Florida.” Dalton uses black truffles from the Périgord region of France and Umbria, Italy, and white truffles from Piedmont, Italy. —Kat Smith

High Art

We’ve always known the dishes created by Fabrizio Aielli of Sea Salt are masterpieces. Now the acclaimed chef will be showing off his art in a four-course immersion dinner titled “Venetian Carnival” at The Dali Museum in St. Pete (thedali.org/immer sion). The November 6 dinner, a culinary interpretation of one of the world’s most sophisticated and artistic festivals, is one in a series of dinners at the museum held in conjunction with the exhibition “Ferran Adrià: The Invention of Food.” Aielli’s dinner will pay homage to Adrià, the worldfamous chef innovator who changed the landscape of gastronomy. —K.S.

TOWN + COUNTRY After six-plus decades the annual Farm City BBQ of Collier County (farmcitybbq.com) qualifies as a hallowed Thanksgiving tradition. The event brings together county residents and the agricultural community for a day of food and camaraderie. It began 61 years ago along the lines of the national Farm City Council, formed to encourage business and agricultural communities to work together to build a strong economy as well as ensure a healthy and plentiful food supply. Over the years, the barbecue has grown, and now organizers donate proceeds to support youth leadership development programs. Collier County 4H Foundation, Youth Leadership Collier, the Collier County Junior Deputies League, and Key Club International will benefit in 2016. The day will include the signature Shula’s steak lunch with Immokalee salad, Florida corn provided by Lipman Produce, baked beans from Russell’s Clambakes, beer, wine, soda, and entertainment. The barbecue November 23 will be hosted by Seminole Casino Hotel Immokalee. —K.S.

Brown Sugar

Distillers lure new consumers with spicy and sweet-flavored whiskies BY MARK SPIVAK

Purists tend to scoff at innovation. Some of that skepticism is wellfounded, since a number of new products are shameless riffs on existing success rather than truly revolutionary ideas. Look at white Zinfandel—since the late 1970s, wine snobs have been railing against the cloying pink stuff, protesting that it bears little resemblance to actual Zinfandel. Yet nearly 50 years later, white Zinfandel is still with us. It’s like a bicycle with permanent training wheels, and consumers who like it may never take the leap into more “serious” categories of wine, so it remains hugely popular. More important, it is a cash cow for many wineries, providing the capital to finance their flagship products that Flavors can mask whiskey’s harsh undertones.

104 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

require years of barrel aging. The same scenario is playing out with flavored whiskey. For the consumer buying a bottle of liquor flavored with cinnamon, maple syrup, or apples, it doesn’t matter much who the distiller is, where the water comes from, or how long the spirit is aged in cask. What matters is how the whiskey tastes—an important consideration, given that drinking spirits is a hobby many people don’t acquire overnight. All the fruit and sugar in flavored whiskey makes the product more accessible to those who would not ordinarily drink it. To be sure, the current explosion in flavored whiskey was preceded by a tsunami of flavored vodka, but the popularity of brown spirits is overtaking vodka for the first time in decades. Flavored whiskey now accounts for 12 percent of all domestic whiskey sales, and Rabobank’s Spirits Quarterly recently called it “the hottest growth segment in the U.S. spirits market,” while sales of flavored vodka have declined 5 percent. Fireball Cinnamon Whisky offers a good example. In 2011, the brand’s sales hit $1.9 million in package stores; by 2013 that figure ballooned to $61 million. It doubled the following year, and that total didn’t even include the whiskey sold in bars. People have been masking the harsh taste of whiskey for centuries, so the idea is not new. In 1976, legendary distiller Jimmy Russell created Wild Turkey Liqueur, which was rebranded three decades later as American Honey. The event that brought flavored whiskey into the mainstream was the release of Jim Beam Red Stag in 2009, and the market was soon flooded with similar products, such as Evan Williams

Honey is another popular taste additive in whiskey as seen in products like Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey.

Honey Reserve and Cherry Reserve from Heaven Hill, Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey, and Dewar’s Highlander Honey. Similarly, Fireball spawned competitors like Jim Beam Kentucky Fire Bourbon and Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Fire. What’s more, a number of producers have even unveiled cinnamon-flavored tequila. So why not just mix bourbon and Coke, rather than buy a sweetened whiskey? There are no ads for it on television, for one thing, and no peer group to extol its trendy hipness. Within the spirits industry, the conventional wisdom is that flavored whiskies appeal to new segments

of the market, such as millennials and women. Just as with white Zinfandel, the hope is that the neophytes will eventually graduate to more traditional spirits. If not, though, one suspects the spirits companies would be just as happy if consumers never make the leap to Bookers or Glenmorangie. While purists may be horrified at the surge in flavored whiskey, the moguls have nothing to worry about. More than $20 billion worth of whiskey is sold in the United States each year, and 88 percent of that total is no small thing. «

A Study in Style

KDG - KIRA KRÜMM & CO./ RANDALL PERRY

The home office is a workspace where you need to be productive, but it should also have sensational style, preferably sans stuffiness. “With a few smart design elements, the home office can serve as a functional workspace that doubles as a casual space for watching TV or accommodating additional guests,” says Kira Krümm, KDG–Kira Krümm & Co., Naples. “When designing yours, first decide which activity is most important in the space, then prioritize the floor plan. If most of your time will be spent using the space for work and study, then invest in well-designed, built-in furniture.” Turn the page for more expert advice on designing a functional and stylish home office space.

OFFICE SPACE

Your home office is an ideal place to reveal a little more of yourself by showcasing your

collectibles, milestones, and achievements. However, that is not all you’ll need to consider. Following are three critical questions to ask before you dive into the design process. 1. Is it functional? “That desk at the store may be beautiful, but does it work for your everyday working life?” asks Joy Sikkema of Bilmar Interiors in Naples. 2. Is it adaptable? “A sleeper sofa is a great addition to a home office. It functions as

SQUASH SEASON Winter squash is popular this time of year. These squashes are not just tasty, they also pack a nutritional punch as a good source of vitamins A and C, as well as fiber. From acorn to butternut to spaghetti, these squashes’ orange or yellow flesh is rich in beta-carotene, an antioxidant that prevents the cell damage that comes with aging and environmental pollutants. Beta-carotene converts to vitamin A in the body. What’s more, studies show a beta-carotene-rich diet—from food, not supplements—may also help protect against cancer and heart disease, according to the American Institute for Cancer Research. Because beta-carotene is fat-soluble, you should add some fat, like a drizzle of olive oil, to ensure the body absorbs it.

Mind Games We’ve been told time and time again that brain games can help us stay mentally fit, but do they actually work? The latest study by Harvard University researchers, published in the journal Epidemiology, found that engaging in social activities, playing games, and even reading can help delay the development of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Bolstering this even further, earlier this year, a review of data from the Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly (Active) study was presented at the Alzheimer’s Association annual meeting. It specifically focused on computerized speed training, revealing that it can slow down the onset of dementia across 10 years. The Active study, funded by the National Institutes of Health, tested more than 2,800 people with an average age of 74 who were at risk of developing dementia. This study, as well as multiple other clinical studies, researched the effect of an online speed-training exercise called the Brain HQ Double Decision Exercise (brainhq.com), created by software developer Posit Science. More than a decade after the study began, researchers went back to the original participants and found they retained the skills they learned during the program, according to Jerri Edwards, lead author of the Active study and associate professor at the University of South Florida’s School of Aging Studies. Aside from improving the everyday functional performance in older adults, researchers found the speedtraining program can protect against depression and improve quality of life, among other benefits. “People need to understand that our brains start to slow down as early as 25 years of age, and that you should start doing this when you’re 50 years old, before you have any cognitive difficulty,” says Edwards. “We use computers so much more now, and we can use computers and iPads in a positive way,” adds Catherine Cruikshank, director of education at the Alzheimer’s Association’s Florida Gulf Coast chapter. “While these computer programs help, [you’re] still sitting, and physical activity is also important.” —Jessica Torricelli

Poison Apple The 2017 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records has been released and it once again names the manchineel as the world’s most dangerous tree. There’s just one problem: The manchineel is native to the Everglades and South Florida coastal regions. This endangered tree thrives in sandy soil and amidst mangroves—and nearly every part of it is poisonous. Eating its small green fruit (dubbed the manzanita de la muerte or the “little apple of death” by Spanish conquistadors) can cause severe pain and even death. Contact with its highly acidic white sap can lead to blisters and—if it gets into the eyes—blindness. The moral of the story: Steer clear of these green “beach apples” and the trees from which they spring. (guinnessworldrecords.com)

Yellowed, thick nails may be a serious infection. Collapsing arch, may be a sign of serious tendon damage. Ingrown toenails can lead to toe amputation if untreated. Bunions can lead to crippling arthritis. Heel pain can be treated fast.

THERAPY PAWS The healing power of dogs is being felt in a Southwest Florida courthouse. The Children’s Advocacy Center of Southwest Florida and Lee County Circuit Judge Robert Branning have teamed up to bring in therapy dogs to comfort traumatized children before and after they testify against their alleged abusers. The program, which began in late June, includes 10 therapy dogs ranging from a 19-pound Cavachon to a 140-pound Newfoundland, which are brought in with their trainers to spend time with children just outside the courtroom. “Sometimes the kids get overwhelmed. They’re testifying against someone who’s harmed them, and the dogs keep them from melting down,” says Keli Ackroyd, pet therapy program coordinator for the Children’s Advocacy Center, a nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of abused children. For now, the dog therapy program is only offered in Lee County in the 20th Judicial Circuit for Dependency Cases. If it goes well, Ackroyd says the program may expand to Collier County. —Anna Welch

Simplified

Collier County Museum, Naples—27th Annual Old Florida Festival, Nov. 19-20, oldfloridafestival.com, colliermuseums.com.

Need to declutter your life? The “Simplification + Organization = Peace of Mind” presentation might be the extra push you need. Presented by Florida Gulf Coast University’s Renaissance Academy, the lecture features Naples-based professional organizer Marla Ottenstein, who will speak at the Moorings Park Center for Healthy Living November 9. The presentation is designed to help people recognize the need to pare down and simplify as a way to find peace of mind. She will cover the importance of clearing out off-site storage units; sorting through paperwork, files, photos, and memorabilia; preparing a detailed list of accounts, passwords, user names, and security questions; how and why to establish your own line of credit; and more. Kathryn Woods

HENRY DINARDO

With avid support for gardens and nature, is chair of this month’s Hats in the Garden, the annual charitable event hosted by the Naples Botanical Garden, which serves as the unofficial kickoff to the social season and the garden’s primary fundraiser. As a seasonal resident of Naples, Woods and her husband have lived part-time in Port Royal for the past decade, though she has been visiting Naples since 1980. Currently, the couple spends the summer months in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, where Woods’ latest passion project entails building a greenhouse and creating a garden there.

Best advice: My father told me early on in my teens that it takes a lifetime to build a reputation but only one act can destroy it. It always made me think before I decided to do something that might ruin that.

Coveted fashion designers: I love Lanvin, Oscar de la Renta, and Valentino for their classic designs. 4. Favorite jewelry designer: Yossi Harari for its simplicity. 5. Best local bite: Chicken tagine at Bleu Provence. 6. Treasured flower: Orchids; I have them all over my house. 7. Go-to scent: I have worn Givenchy’s Ysatis my whole life. 8.
