Throughout 2018, Vero Beach Magazine is celebrating its 20th anniversary. For the past two decades, the mission of the magazine has been to connect givers, philanthropic innovators and community leaders with Indian River County’s least fortunate families. We strive to foster ideas, awareness and donor dollars to the causes and people who need it most by highlighting their good works in the feature stories that fill our pages. I am happy to report that we are succeeding in this mission and we could not have done it without our loyal readers from Vero Beach and beyond.
In the spirit of our mission, we publish the annual Guide To Giving — the source and inspiration for all things related to local nonprofit organizations. In our 2018 edition, you will find an updated listing of Indian River County’s nonprofits, an event calendar, learn about how our local Community Foundation works, meet the growing team at The Buggy Bunch, shop “gifts that give back” and much more.
Thanks to all of you for your generosity — here’s to the next 20 years!
With great appreciation,

ELIZABETH MOULTON CEO & Founder ceo@verobeachmagazine.comWelcome to the 2018 Guide to Giving. Ever since Vero Beach Magazine was founded 20 years ago, highlighting the impact nonpro t and service organizations make on our community has been a priority. While the needs are many, thanks to volunteers, donors and advocates they are being met time and time again.
Last Oct. 14, more than 1,000 volunteers helped make the lives of others brighter by participating in Indian River County United Way’s annual Day of Caring. Partnered with local nonpro ts, they painted houses, assisted the local food bank, assembled care kits for the homeless and tackled a number of other projects.
Just think what would happen if every day was a day of caring. Simple acts of generosity 365 times a year.
Giving of your time and talents is one way and Judi Miller, who heads up Big Brothers Big Sisters of Indian River County, St. Lucie County and Okeechobee has seen it happen repeatedly when an adult (“Big”) forms a mentoring relationship with a child (“Little”).
“Mentoring is really a gift; it’s such a simple concept that can truly be life changing,” says Judi, an example immediately coming to mind. “There was a boy in one of the Vero Beach childcare centers who was constantly on the move, constantly in trouble. He started out below expectations and by the end of the year he was the top student in two
of the three domains on the Florida VPK (Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten) assessment test.”
Judi has more good news. Thanks to a grant from the Walmart State Giving Program, the organization has launched a Big Boxes, Big Adventure program, and volunteer mentors are welcomed with open arms. “There are books, conversation starters and activities that coordinate with the books. All are fun and engaging ways to learn.”
Learning is the operative word, and it doesn’t just apply to children, as Michelle Servos, Literacy Services of Indian River County board president, well knows. “When you consider that one in ve adults in our county struggle to read a newspaper, complete a job application, or read to their children, the need for Literacy Services is glaring.”
Michelle tells about Sam, a young man who wanted to join and participate in a Bible study group. This problem was, Sam couldn’t read. Fortunately, he learned about Literacy Services’ free tutoring program, signed up, was partnered with a volunteer and as Michelle happily notes, “Today Sam not only knows how to read, he’s a member of a Bible study group and he leads it!”
The desire to take the lead and make a di erence in the lives of young people is what prompted Vero Beach native Mardy Fish and former United States Tennis Association top-10 player to found the
Whether through donations or volunteering, a little giving can go a long way
“ Wherever you turn, you can fnd someone who needs you. Even if it is a little thing, do something for which there is no pay but the privilege of doing it.”
Albert Schweitzer
Mardy Fish Children’s Foundation 10 years ago. During its rst decade his foundation has expanded it’s healthy lifestyle programs, “Kids on Courts” and “Achievable Dreams,” from two to 20 sites and now serves more than 1,000 children.
OK, so you can’t form a foundation like Mardy, and you don’t think you’d make a good mentor or tutor, but if you can drive a car you still have the power to change someone’s life by becoming involved with the Senior Resource Association’s Meals on Wheels program. Last year volunteers delivered 58,629 hot daily meals and cheerful greetings to homebound seniors in Indian River County. As the demand increases, so does the need for volunteer drivers.
And don’t forget the Samaritan Center, where families struggling with homelessness receive shelter and are taught how to become
self-su cient through structured programs. The center relies on volunteers who help with childcare, meal preparation and maintenance, and there is an ongoing need for nancial support. As program administrator Renee Bireley points out, “$50 provides one day’s worth of food for 26 residents. Every dollar brings hope.”
So how do you decide which causes you want to volunteer for and/or support nancially? Where does your heart lead you? In this Guide to Giving you will nd the names of nonpro t and volunteer organizations just waiting for you to reach out and lend a hand. From mentoring, to donating food, to adopting an animal, you can make an impact on your community by supporting charities that matter to you.
Be someone’s unsung hero today. You’ll nd you receive more than you give. ✤
The Pirate & Fairy Festival is one of many favorite events held at McKee Botanical Gardens throughout the year.
What is your favorite cause? Do you want to help charities that support causes you are passionate about survive and thrive for present and future generations?
In Vero Beach, throughout Indian River County and across the country, caring individuals, families and organizations are using the services of Indian River Community Foundation to help them simplify their giving through what’s called “donor-advised funds.” Donoradvised funds allow donors to make a charitable contribution, receive an immediate tax bene t and then recommend grants from the fund over time. A donor-advised fund is somewhat like a charitable “investment” account: philanthropists contribute to their funds as frequently as they like and then recommend grants to their favorite charities when they are ready.
The idea of starting a community foundation in Indian River County was the brain-child of local attorney Robin Lloyd. “I had a client who suggested it,” says Lloyd. After learning the bene ts of using a community foundation for philanthropy, Lloyd felt compelled to establish one in Indian River County, and he approached Richard “Rick” McDermott, who at that time was with U.S. Trust in Vero Beach.
“I didn’t know much about community foundations, but once I became educated and saw the exibility and how local citizens could make outright and planned gifts to support and sustain local charities for years to come, I was in,” says McDermott.
McDermott, Lloyd and Ann Marie McCrystal, a founding member of Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) of the Treasure Coast and Hospice House, were the original founders of Indian River Community Foundation.
McDermott continues, “Robin did all the preliminary charter work.”
And Indian River Community Foundation o cially opened in 2008. The plan was to acquire 50 founders, each pledging $5,000 per year for ve years to build an initial $1 million that would go toward operations. But they surpassed their goal, starting with 52 founders.
In the early days, o ce space was provided gratis within the o ces of Cypress Capital Group, where McDermott moved after U.S. Trust. Assistance in strategic planning and coordination was supported through the Robert F. and Eleonora W. (“Bob and Ellie”) McCabe Foundation’s executive director, Lenora Ritchie. For several years, the organization was housed within the McCabe’s o ce. Kerry Bartlett (who now serves as vice president of the VNA and Hospice Foundation of the Treasure Coast) was hired as IRCF’s rst executive director in 2008.
Today, Je Pickering, who joined IRCF in 2015 as its president and CEO, accountant Jaci Ruppert and coordinator Yamilet Cendejas sta the organization, with administrative services for accounting, nance and investment management provided through the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation (GKCCF).
In the beginning, the board thought that until the group raised at least $5 million it would be best to have GKCCF’s help. The Greater Kansas City Community Foundation is one of the top community foundations in the country with assets (today) of more than $2 billion. IRCF director Bill Frick had prior experience with GKCCF and recommended it highly. “It gave us instant credibility and trust and kept overhead down,” says McDermott.
The relationship between IRCF and GKCCF has only strengthened over the years. Services provided by GKCCF have been cost-e ective, reliable and solid. All decisions are made locally through IRCF and its donors and GKCCF continues to help as IRCF grows.
Most of those who decide to use the services of IRCF keep their personal nancial advisors. In fact, IRCF has a professional advisor council comprising local attorneys, accountants and nancial planners. The council meets regularly to discuss ways IRCF can help organize and carry out their clients’ charitable giving, including their estates. It also holds an annual symposium on charitable giving and estate planning together with the United Way Foundation of Indian River County. Ninety percent of all IRCF assets are held in donor-advised funds.
As part of counseling donors, IRCF researches governance, management, nancial responsibility and results of charitable organizations in which their donors are interested. On the ip side, IRCF also helps charitable organizations set up special funds, such as endowments, designed to support them in perpetuity.
An endowment is a donation of money or property to a nonpro t
organization for the ongoing support of that organization. Usually the endowment is structured so the principal amount is kept intact, while the investment income is available for use, or part of the principal is released each year. This allows for the donation to have an impact over a longer period than if it were spent all at once.
A legacy is when you leave money to a charity in your will to ensure it can continue its good work. Indian River Community Foundation established its legacy society in 2011 and named it after “The First Lady of Vero Beach,” Alma Lee Loy.
“ When Rick McDermott and Becky Allen came to me back in 2008 to ask if I would consider becoming a founder,” she says, “I wanted to but didn’t think I had the wherewithal to make such a big commitment.”
After going over her personal nances, she concluded she would tighten her belt and be able to give the $5,000 for ve years. She
believed so strongly in the organization’s promise to keep Vero Beach a wonderful place to live, she cheerfully said yes.
So when IRCF decided to start the legacy society, it was with respect for all Loy represents that they asked — and she consented — to name the fund the Alma Lee Loy Legacy Society. And, by the way, Loy committed to another ve years of annual giving, almost jumping with joy at the prospect of helping others even after she’s gone.
Indian River Community Foundation is set up to permit grants to any quali ed 501(c)3 charitable organization in the United States, including schools and places of worship. Over the past 10 years, IRCF has awarded more than 5,000 grants to charitable organization, 80 percent of which are located in Indian River County.
“We are not a charity,” says past chairman Bob Pu . “We are more a vehicle for people to give through.” Immediate past chairman of the board Scott Alexander explains, “We are a 501(c)3, and we have earned accreditation with National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations. Our role is to assist people who want to plan their giving to support their charities of choice today, tomorrow and beyond.”
One of Vero Beach’s most visible organizations, Impact 100, in which 100 women each write a check for $1,000 annually and then gets a vote to choose which local charities receive grants totaling $100,000, got started by partnering with IRCF. Financial administrative services and grant-making assistance continue to be provided through IRCF.
To date, IRCF has received more than $80 million in contributions into 150 charitable giving accounts. Their donors have awarded more than $43 million in grants through the foundation. More than $40 million in assets remain, and continued growth is expected.
One area of signi cant growth is coming from private foundation conversions. After 61 years of giving through the McCabe Foundation, last year Ellie and Bob McCabe announced they were dissolving their foundation. Instead of dealing with the day-to-day aspects of running a foundation, they launched a donor-advised fund through IRCF and a permanent endowment called The Fund for Better Mental Health in Indian River County.
If you want to “give where you live,” consider place-based philanthropy through the Indian River Community Foundation. By supporting your favorite local charity through IRCF you can make a gift that lasts forever. ✤

Thrift shops have a long history. They began in England in 1899 and expanded dramatically during the First and Second World Wars with the opening of shops called “charity shops.” It was not long after that the thrift shop came to the United States. Today many local and national charitable organizations, both religious and secular, operate thrift shops that o er the chance to donate a variety of goods from furniture to clothing to books to jewelry and appliances. The shops support a number of missions from homeless shelters to missionary work. We have provided a list of nonpro t thrift stores located in Vero Beach and Indian River County for your consideration.

Having a baby is one of life’s most amazing blessings. It’s also a huge responsibility, and for some Indian River County moms the emotional and financial challenges of raising a child can outweigh the joys. Where can I go to meet other moms? Get advice, guidance? How can I afford all those diapers?
Those questions and more may be answered by becoming involved with The Buggy Bunch (TBB), a nonprofit organization that offers a wide range of programs and support services to more than 9,000 moms and families. There are playgroups, educational programs, Bible studies and yes — free diapers.
“We have a ‘diaper closet’ and in 2017 alone we’ve given out 100,000 diapers to moms who need them,” says Kelly Sartain, TBB executive director and one of the four women who nine years ago started walking the Merrill Barber Bridge pushing baby strollers and talking. Exercise was their goal, sharing concerns, experiences and ideas how to do things better — a triple bonus.
“I was a new mom at the time and we didn’t feel there was a community for new moms,” says Kelly. “We felt that, regardless of their situation, moms of all ages should be able to come together and be connected.”
It was a concept that took hold as other women joined in. By offering programs and services throughout the county TBB seeks to
help moms and families thrive emotionally, financially, mentally, physically and spiritually.
While TBB maintains a Christian identity, “sharing the abundance of God’s love through his son Jesus Christ,” all are welcome regardless of beliefs, backgrounds and socioeconomic status. Best of all, participation is free.
“There are so many needs, especially for those who are going through changes in their life. Maybe they’ve just moved here from out of state and don’t know anyone. Maybe they’re going through a divorce or separation, or they have a child with special needs. We make a point to be there for all moms,” Kelly notes.
“We don’t duplicate other services that are being offered, however, when there is a gap we consider stepping in to partner with other organizations to meet those needs. We believe we can accomplish more if we complement existing community resources.”
That was the case when TBB partnered with Indian River Medical Center’s Women’s Health Center to comfort families dealing with the loss of a child, whether stillborn, miscarriage, tubal pregnancy or from complications. With a $2,500 grant from Christ Church of Vero Beach, TBB has donated 50 memory boxes.
“Inside the boxes there are baby Bibles, a book on infant loss, artwork, poems, blankets, a birth certificate and two teddy bears, one for the mom and dad; the other goes with the child to the funeral
home,” Kelly explains. “Early last year one of our founding members had a baby that was stillborn at 38 weeks. Those of us who are close to her realized how traumatic it was. We also realized that there was a gap in services and emotional support for families.”
Yet TBB’s most impressive fundraising effort to date is the $2 million that is needed to renovate the former Vero Furniture Mart at the corner of 21st Street and 15th Avenue, in the heart of historic downtown Vero Beach.
Where sofas, easy chairs and coffee tables formerly appeared in the storefront windows, they are now covered with sheets of pink paper announcing the arrival of TBB’s Family Education Center.
Last year Kelly brought Cori Lamm on board to spearhead the capital campaign. “We have a long waiting list for many of our programs and we needed our own facility,” says Cori. “Up until now we’ve been using existing spaces at churches and businesses, which has allowed us to save funds and reach out into the community. Those spaces are now maxed out.”
— Kelly Sartain, executive directorSo is TBB’s cramped 500-square-foot office on 58th Avenue. The new 10,000-square-foot building will house expanded programs and services as well as office space.
Media relations director Debbie Morgan has been busy spreading the word about TBB’s ambitious goal and plans for the future. For her, it’s personal. “When I researched my genealogy I found out that my great grandfather and his four siblings were sent to an orphanage,” says Debbie.
“I believe that had someone not stepped in and given him the love, guidance and support he needed, his life — and my life could have been totally different.”
Kelly couldn’t agree more. “I believe The Buggy Bunch is really filling a need that’s not otherwise being provided. One of my biggest jobs as executive director is to make sure what we do is sustainable, that infrastructure is ahead of programming. Best of all, I see the difference we make in the lives of moms and families throughout our community." ✤

Supporting charitable causes is a major focus of Vero Beach Magazine and something of great importance to many of its readers. But before we write checks to charitable causes, we should know where the money is going.
In choosing the places for our charitable actions, we want to avoid organizations that take our donations and then don’t put the money to use in a way we approve of. Not only do we want to avoid outright fraud, but we also want to avoid charitable organizations that spend too much on administrative and other non-charitable expenses.
I think the rst step is to decide the type of charity you are interested in donating to. Some of you are happy with donating to a large umbrella charitable organization such as the United Way that disperses funds to many organizations and agencies; others look for more narrow, personal causes such as a college scholarship foundation, a local food bank or a literacy service.
If you’re considering donating to an organization, here are several web sites to help screen among them. I think the easiest to use is Charity Navigator at www.charitynavigator.org. This site screens over 1,000 national charities for the factors mentioned above, and gives each one a “star” rating. If you or your tax advisor wants more detail, try Guidestar at www.guidestar.org. An intriguing site is Givewell at www.givewell.org that actually recommends charities for you to consider. Any charity recommended on one of these sites will be accredited to receive tax-deductible contributions.
For example, while writing this article, I pulled up United Way of
Indian River County. At Charity Navigator, it scores well with about 83 percent of its contributions going to charitable causes and the remainder to fundraising and administrative costs. Guidestar o ers access to independent audits and tax forms for the charity. As noted above, Givewell’s site is not useful in searching for a particular charity but instead o ers independent ideas for worthwhile and e cient causes.
If you’re interested in a small local charity, some won’t be listed on the national websites. Here, you need to do some footwork and visit the charity and ask questions. Does the charity promote a cause and use methods you approve of? If so, then you can focus on the nancial side. You’ll want to nd out what percentage of your donations actually go to charitable work. Shoot for at least 75 percent or ask if it is less. You’ll want to know what the charity actually does and who the people are that perform the services.
You’ll want to recheck these criteria from time to time if you intend to be a repeat donor. I’d suggest that this work is well worth doing, as many of us get much more satisfaction from knowing our donations are working on a personal and local level rather than just putting a check in the mail to a huge organization. If you are making substantial donations, then ask your nancial advisor or accountant to review the charity’s Tax Form 990 and any independent audits that may have been done to understand if your money is being spent e ciently.
A number of tax advantaged methods can help with your charitable actions. Talk to your nancial advisor about the most e ective and tax-e cient ways to do so. ✤
