CHARITY REGISTRY & SEASON PREVIEW

Welcome to Vero Beach Magazine’s annual Guide to Giving. On these pages you will find updated information about nonprofit agencies and service organizations, all focused on improving the overall health and well-being of Indian River County residents. You will note the list is longer this year, in response to an increase in needs.
How you can help is the big question, and that’s where fundraising can make a difference. It’s been said that charity is giving, while philanthropy is investing, which translates to supporting the causes you have a heart for.
A perfect example is May Pops, presented by Indian River Medical Center Foundation. Now in its 30th year, the annual
open-air concert featuring the Brevard Symphony Orchestra attracts 1,200 attendees and engages 100 volunteers. Held the first Sunday in May, the much-anticipated event is a source of significant financial support for the medical center. Proceeds help advance technology, enhance facilities and elevate patient care at IRMC, thus benefitting the entire community.
The beauty of May Pops is that it’s accessible, affordable and fun! The event got its start thanks to two angels, Helen Post and her late husband, Dick, who shared a fundraising vision.
As Liz Bruner, IRMC Foundation president, points out, “With May Pops, Helen and Dick Post began a tradition embraced by their family and our community. Their leadership and generosity
have made this event a success that benefits us all by helping to advance local healthcare.”
Fundraising becomes even more important when operating budgets take a financial hit, as evidenced by recent cuts in state and federal funding for nonprofit cultural organizations. Riverside Theatre and Vero Beach Museum of Art, two community treasures, recently experienced a 50 percent drop in funding. Ouch.
According to Oscar Sales, Riverside Theatre’s director of marketing, there are a number of fundraising events you can support to make up for the shortfall. The biggie is the annual Premiere Benefit, which takes place at the opening performance of Riverside’s March production. Add to that November’s Fall Luncheon, February’s Supper Club, Vegas Nights in July, and Festival of Trees in November, the largest fundraiser for the theater’s education division.
“These fundraisers help with Riverside’s over $8 million operation, where only 50 percent is covered by ticket sales,” says Sales. “I always say we’re in the business of experiences. We don’t have a tangible product like a chair or a shirt that will bring back memories every time you see it; we can only give a feeling and we work hard to see that our experiences are unique and memorable.”
Memorable experiences are also in great supply at Vero Beach Museum of Art, where membership, program sponsorship, planned giving and event participation help provide creative educational, artistic and humanities-based opportunities for the entire community.
According to Sophie Bentham-Wood, the museum’s director of marketing and communications, participating in fundraising events provides an exciting and engaging way to support museum programs and ensure that future generations are able to experience VBMA.
It has been proved that engaging children in civic-minded activities from a young age teaches them to appreciate what they have and to understand that they have the ability to help others.
Sometimes it starts with something as simple as a lemonade stand. With anticipation shining in their eyes, three 5-year-olds wave a sign sporting the words “Help support Crossover Mission,” a local basketball and academic mentoring program for at-risk youth. You can’t say no. While one little girl carefully pours your sweet drink, the other hands you a homemade cookie and napkin. It’s not the amount of money they make; it’s the joy that comes from knowing they’re helping others.
Fundraising can be infectious. Last spring, coach Gerry Berkheimer’s tennis students at the Jungle Club played 12 hours of tennis, raising $1,000 in support of the Hope for Families Center Shelter Program. At the end of the day they were

This Guide to Giving lists 148 local nonprofit
exhausted — and elated — happy they had made a difference in the lives of those less fortunate.
Then there’s Lilly Connell, who decided at the age of 7 that shelter animals needed help more than she needed presents. For her birthday, she asked her friends and family to make a donation to the Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County instead of bringing her gifts. After collecting over $400 Lilly became the nonprofit’s youngest Guardian Angel and first child Guardian Angel.
In the years since, animals at the Humane Society have benefitted from Lilly’s fundraising efforts. Today, at age 18, the rising college sophomore continues to care for and support homeless animals.
So, how can you reach out to those less fortunate? This Guide to Giving is filled with opportunities to help others, be they twoor four-footed. Circle one, get involved, and experience the joy that follows! ✤

of The Offcial Vero Beach Handbook, the annual resource guide for visitors, residents and all other Vero Beach enthusiasts. The 2019 edition features new in-depth articles, updated information about where to go and what to do in our area, with maps and gorgeous photography.
One of the first things Julie Eisdorfer did after moving to Vero Beach was to see if there was a local garden club. There was, and she wasted no time in joining the Garden Club of Indian River County, a member of the National Garden Clubs and Florida Federation of Garden Clubs.
Eisdorfer, who grew up in a garden-loving family, currently serves as president of the 230-plus-member nonprofit formed in 1928. The group’s founding purpose remains the same today: to educate members and the general public in gardening, floral arrangement, horticulture and landscape design; to study and assist in protecting and conserving native plants and natural resources; and to beautify city parks, schools, roadways and buildings.
Over the years, garden club members have enhanced the grounds of numerous public places, among them the Indian River County Main Library, Heritage Center, A.W. Young Park, Vero Beach Theatre Guild, Freshman Learning Center and the median between the Barber Bridge and Royal Palm Pointe, which was planted in memory of those who died during the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
The Garden Club’s latest green thumb effort has taken root at St. Francis Manor, an affordable senior community on 20th
The Garden Club of Indian River County has been beautifying our community for 90 yearsPhotography by Victoria Sempsrott Colorful and easy to grow, crepe myrtle is a popular choice for Florida gardens.
Avenue where, surrounding the two newly constructed apartment buildings, foliage flourishes. This isn’t the first beautification project club members have gifted to the appreciative residents; a butterfly garden near the entrance was created earlier by members of the Jasmine Circle charms visitors and residents alike.
“We have nine circles, each one named after a flower, and we’re equal opportunity as we have men who love to garden,” a smiling Eisdorfer explains. “The circles meet monthly at various times during the day and evening, they have their own programs, and they’re all involved in civic projects. We provided the funding for a memorial garden at VNA Hospice House, and one of our circles created a visual learning garden at the Wabasso School. We’re very hands-on when we do a project.”
They’re also very generous. During the 2016-2017 fiscal year, Garden Club members contributed a total of $41,017 toward civic projects, which included $6,720 in scholarships, one to a student at Indian River State College, another, through the Scholarship Foundation of Indian River County, to a student studying biology or the environment, and three to students

attending Camp Wekiva, a residential nature camp for 3rd- to 8th-graders.
Engaging and educating the next generation is high on club members’ priority list. “One of the largest amounts we gave last year was $15,000 for the Children’s Garden at McKee Botanical Garden, which will open in early 2019. Actually, the entire family is going to enjoy and benefit from it,” says civic development chair Renae Senn. “We’re a corporate sponsor at McKee and we provide support to the Environmental Learning Center and Pelican Island Preservation Society as well.”
“ We believe that communities make gardens grow and that gardens make communities grow,” says Garden Club member Linda Gillespie.
Over the years the number of community beautification projects has multiplied. All are documented visually inside the group’s clubhouse, where two large citrus trees, their ever-spreading branches sprouting fruit, each bearing the name and date of a project, are painted on the walls.
So how do these projects get started, how do they become a reality, and how are they financed? “People come to us, mostly through schools and organizations, with their requests for assistance,” says Senn. “The money we raise through Gardenfest and the sale of our annual Christmas ornaments goes toward funding our projects.”
It was member Nat Jackson who, in 1992, came up with the idea of creating a keepsake Christmas ornament. The design, from an original sketch by local artist Arun Wijetilleke, depicts city and state scenes of historical interest. The 2017 ornament, “Old Vero Ice Age Site,” captured images of a mastodon, an extinct tapir and a human family. The Driftwood Inn, Pocahontas Park and Jungle Trail have been the subjects of earlier ornaments, and it didn’t take long before all became sought-after collector’s items.
Then there’s Gardenfest! Who hasn’t heard of the perennial favorite that takes place the first weekend in February? What began 17 years ago with some vendor exhibitions at Riverside Park, drawing a few hundred people, quickly grew into an annual event enjoyed by thousands of plant lovers and gardening aficionados from around the state, Southeast region and beyond. Vendors, who offer a wide selection of quality items for the garden, as well as nature-inspired works of art, are chosen by invitation and there’s usually a waiting list.
“If you want to become a member of the Garden Club, you have to be involved with Gardenfest in one way or another. We love putting it on, but it’s a major undertaking,” says Eisdorfer, who then mentions another membership requirement. “Also, once a month we have a garden workday at the clubhouse, on a
Saturday morning. The circles send one or two members to help maintain the gardens behind the building.”
The grounds surrounding the ‘60s-era clubhouse at 2526 17th Ave. are proof positive of the members’ passion for gardening and green thumb prowess. It’s worth a visit just to see their handiwork up close. And make it a point to attend the Garden Club’s next semi-annual flower show, scheduled for 2020. If it’s anything like “Impressions of Vero,” their highly acclaimed flower show this past April, you’re sure to be amazed and inspired. ✤
“To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.”
AUDREY HEPBURN
Each person’s story is unique. Some may be born with a predisposition for mental health issues such as bipolar disorder, depression, paranoia and/or schizophrenia. For those diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, it’s usually things they have witnessed or experienced that a ect their mental health.
For patients and their families, it’s hard to discern where to go, whom to call, what to do. And even for those “in the know,” mental health resources have been fragmented. But fortunately, in February 2004, in response to ndings from a community needs assessment sponsored by United Way of Indian River County, United Way, IRC Hospital District and The Robert F. and Eleonora W. McCabe Foundation, plus the IRC Board of County Commissioners, Indian River Medical Center, IRC Sheri ’s O ce, Vero Beach Police Department and the state of Florida Department of Children and Family Services banded together to form the Mental Health Collaborative. The goal was to identify gaps in the mental health care continuum and nd solutions for our county.
The Collaborative includes a diverse group of mental health providers and individuals, as well as private and public funders who work together to increase access, decrease duplication and build community-wide support for mental health.
Originally funded through United Way, the Hospital District
and the McCabe Foundation, the Collaborative soon gained additional support from county commissioners, Indian River Medical Center and the state of Florida.
The Collaborative began with a needs assessment specically related to mental health care in Indian River County. One of the greatest needs identi ed was for a walk-in mental health clinic. So, together with the Mental Health Association in IRC, the Collaborative helped design program components and nd funding resources, and in April 2007, the association opened the county’s rst mental health walk-in center.
In 2008, member organizations of the Collaborative, most notably the McCabe Foundation, were instrumental in having the University of Florida open a satellite clinic, named the Florida Center for Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine, in Vero Beach to provide both adult and pediatric psychiatric services with three psychiatrists and an addiction specialist, plus medical students
and fellows.
One of the most dramatic undertakings advocated for and facilitated by the Collaborative is Mental Health Court, established in January 2015 under the leadership of 19th Judicial Circuit Judge Cynthia Cox and Sheri Deryl Loar. “Jails have become de facto state mental institutions,” says Cox. Seeing the success of what is called “problem-solving courts,” which focus on rehabilitation, and having already implemented a Veteran’s Treatment Court in St. Lucie County herself, Cox started the Veterans Treatment and Drug courts in Indian River County, but needed funding to initiate, implement and manage a Mental Health Court. She had the full support of Loar.
“Fifty- ve out of 100 inmates in our jail are there as a result of mental health-behavioral issues,” says Loar. “We currently process 5,500 inmates into jail a year. If we could get those with mental health problems the help they need, get them out of jail, and
keep them out, the county could realize substantial savings.”
Although county o cials weren’t originally convinced, when Loar suggested they allow the Sheri ’s O ce to invest $200,000 of money budgeted for the department but not spent at the end of scal year 2014, they approved the expenditure. And after seeing the program’s success, the county continues to provide nancial support for Mental Health Court as a line item in the Sheri ’s O ce budget. The Department of Children and Families and others provide grants and additional nancial assistance for the program.
The sheri has two full-time employees dedicated to the problem-solving courts who screen inmates for mental issues and drug and alcohol problems, coordinate appointments, work with case managers and document progress. Inmates serving for relatively minor infractions who qualify and commit to stringent guidelines set by Cox and the court, get out of jail, are put on
probation and placed at home or in transitional housing. They must see psychiatrists, psychologists and counselors as ordered by the court and undergo regular drug testing — at their own expense — to stay in the program. They are no longer prisoners; they are “clients.” Most clients are able to graduate within six months.
The program is working. For example, a group of 110 inmates had 387 arrests the year before being enrolled in the Mental Health Court program. The following year, after being enrolled in the program, these clients had only eight arrests. “Recidivism has been a major problem,” says Loar. “Thanks to this program, we’re seeing a major reduction in the number of prisoners who relapse into criminal behavior.” He continues, “It costs the county an average of $75 a day to take care of a prisoner in the Indian River County Jail. For those needing medication, and many who su er with mental illness do, the cost jumps to $150 per day to cover the cost of the drugs and salaries of pharmacy and nursing sta to administer the meds.”
To date, 50 people have graduated from Indian River County’s Mental Health Court. Regina (not her real name) and Lutreana are two recent graduates.
Regina, a 26-year-old female, doesn’t want to disclose why she was sent to jail. She says that is all behind her. She wants to be a good role model for her 7-year-old son. “Going through Mental Health Court was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done,” she says. “There is a huge list of appointments — it’s intensive therapy.” Looking back, she thinks she “got into trouble” possibly as a cry for help. She su ered major depression and PTSD as a result of a previous abusive relationship. Now enrolled in Keiser University, working toward a criminal justice degree, Regina says, “I’d hate to think where I’d be if it wasn’t for Mental Health Court. I’ve been able to rede ne who I am.” She adds, “My goal is to break the stigma around mental illness to give someone else hope.”
Lutreana has “always su ered with paranoia and schizophrenia.” She used cocaine, alcohol and crack to numb the pain. In 2005, she was living in the 9th Ward section of New Orleans, two miles from the levy that broke after Hurricane Katrina. Her cousin and her cousin’s two boys, ages 9 and 5, died. She clung to a tree in alligator-infested water for two and a half days with no water or food, hearing explosions. When
Similar to cancer patient navigators, team members at the McCabe Connections Center consider themselves mental health patient navigators.
Judge Cox sends grads off with words to live by
At Mental Health Court graduation, along with a personalized certi cate of completion, Judge Cynthia Cox distributes letters of congratulations and encouragement. She reminds graduates of the carpenter’s story, which she shares with them throughout the program. The story is about an elderly carpenter who is ready to retire. The contractor asks him to build just one more house as a personal favor to him. The carpenter’s heart isn’t in it; he resorts to shoddy workmanship and uses inferior materials. When the project is completed, the contractor presents the carpenter the key to the front door. The carpenter is shocked. If he had known he was building his own house, he would have done it all di erently. Cox reminds the graduates the house is their life. Their attitudes and choices help strengthen the house they will live in tomorrow. Her last words to them are, “Go out into the world and build yourself a strong house and have a successful life.”
rescued by helicopter and taken to Houston, she was diagnosed with PTSD and treated for sepsis. She eventually returned home to her parents in Wabasso. In 2016, Lutreana was arrested for shoplifting. She had stolen items including a whole buggy full of baby clothes and products from one store. “I was crazy,” she says. “I was 56 years old and never had any children.” Lutreana was found to be incompetent to stand trial. Now, after a year and a half in the program, including one relapse, she is on medication that is working, is sober and doing well. “Mental Health Court was a blessing for me. Being free of a habit, being clean, is a good feeling,” she says.
A very signi cant development within the Mental Health Collaborative is its incorporation in 2016 as a stand-alone, nonpro t 501(c)(3). Brett Hall, a licensed clinical social worker who earlier served as administrative director of Indian River Medical Center’s 46-bed psychiatric hospital, the Behavioral Health Center, was hired in September of that year as its rst executive director. Located at 2345 14th Ave. in downtown Vero Beach, their o ce and the new adjoining McCabe Connections Center are open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The McCabe Connections Center is now the central access point for helping individuals and families who are dealing with mental health and/or substance abuse disorders. Since opening its doors in 2017, it has served over 1,700 clients and family members. Similar to cancer patient navigators, the team members at the Connections Center consider themselves mental health patient navigators. They make appointments for clients with community mental health and substance abuse providers, assess and eliminate barriers that would keep clients from getting to their appointments and follow up. Insurance is not required and there is no fee. The Connections Center’s tenacious sta of four that includes Hall, a clinical specialist, a nancial specialist and a community resource specialist, nds individualized solutions that work. Start-up costs were provided through the McCabe Foundation, the Hospital District and United Way; other sources help support ongoing operations.
Creating solutions, the Mental Health Collaborative’s 35 member organizations and individuals epitomize the power of teamwork. Thanks to their compassion, expertise and determination, our county has the Mental Health Association’s walk-in center, the University of Florida Center for Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine, Mental Health Court and the McCabe Connections Center.
“There isn’t any place in Florida or the U.S. that has what we now have for mental health services,” concludes Hall.
And they’re not nished yet. ✤
