Naples lives here.

Lise Sundrla, Executive Director

It’s so much more than just a slogan; it’s a way of life. Naples really does live—and work, play, shop and dine—right here, on Fifth Avenue South. The Avenue is the heart of Naples, the history of Naples and the spirit of Naples today. This celebrated stretch of road, extending from Tamiami Trail to the Gulf of Mexico in Old Naples (and its treasured side streets), is one of the country’s chicest destinations. Foodies agree that Fifth Avenue South is home to the area’s best mix of eclectic restaurants, charming coffee shops and lively pubs. There are 34 eateries featuring everything from authentic Italian to American grill to Persian to Caribbean to sophisticated organic cuisine—and everything in between. With the recent addition of a modern French bistro that serves local and healthy cuisine, a flavored popcorn emporium with a fresh take on an old classic and a raw fruit and vegetable juice bar, there is truly something for every palate. Fifth Avenue South is also a hub for stylish, locally owned boutiques and shops in Southwest Florida. Here you will discover not only gorgeous clothing and unique shoes for all ages, but also a wealth of gifts, one-of-a-kind art, antiques and home furnishings. If you are seeking art and culture, you’ve come to the right place. The Avenue abounds with world-class galleries, The von Liebig Center for the Arts, and exceptional community and professional theater with The Naples Players and the Gulfshore Playhouse. Throughout the year, Fifth Avenue South hosts a variety of festivals and special events, including a new wine and food festival coming this fall. Be sure to check the calendar in the back of our magazine (“Must Do & See”) for upcoming dates. Whether you are new to Naples, one of our many valued residents or one of our cherished Fifth Avenue South guests, we hope you will visit and take in the sights, sounds and festivity that is Fifth Avenue and Cambier Park is South. Fifth Avenue South has always been the premier destination for locals and visitors alike looking to dine, shop and be entertained in casual elegance. And in the past two years, the district has grown exponentially. With more than 30 new retail businesses, restaurants,

offices and expansions since January 2013, there’s no denying business is booming. This whirlwind of activity has not gone unnoticed: Out of more than 77 major attractions in Naples, TripAdvisor recently acknowledged Fifth Avenue South as the “#1 Shopping and Dining Destination” in the area, a tip of the hat that lends credit to the slogan that, indeed, Naples lives here. So, what’s leading so many business owners to set up shop here? Just ask Chef Vincenzo Betulia of the award-winning Osteria Tulia, which opened on

Lillie Williams, the first black business owner in Naples, operated a popular restaurant and grocer named the Green Top Social Place. In 1984, she closed her business and donated her building to the Pentacostal Church.

the Avenue in early 2013. When selecting a location for the rustic Italian restaurant, Betulia knew there was no place he’d rather be. “Fifth Avenue South is on the cusp of becoming a flourishing culinary destination,” says Betulia. “Diners are drawn to the Avenue because it’s upscale in nature but also has a small-town feel with a unique and eclectic mix of locally owned restaurants. The right location has been crucial to bringing my dream of serving authentic

Italian cuisine to life.” Betulia isn’t alone in his fondness for the Avenue. For Naples business owners, Fifth has become a second home, and all are working together to see it thrive. Realtor Patti Fortune pursued a deliciously

zany niche when she opened The Popcorn Cellar in the fall of 2013. With a 25-foot popcorn tasting bar, visitors can stroll in and enjoy a variety of rotating flavors such as Key lime pie, truffle Parmesan and the signature Naples Mix, consisting of caramel swirl blended with white cheddar. “The goal of our store is fun, and it’s for people of all ages,” says Fortune. “Our friendly ‘popologists’ get to know visitors from all over the world and allow them to have a real experience in Naples.” Popologists also get free rein to experiment with new recipes and flavors, so visitors are always sure to find something new to try. On the 600 block, H. Michael Rose proudly opened the doors to Kristoff Jewelers in December 2013. The jeweler had been working on the Avenue for seven years when he decided to open his own store. With any number

of locations in Naples to choose from, Rose says he decided on Fifth because “it has an ambience that a lot of cities don’t have—a nice old-world charm.”

Of course, many established businesses lay claim to this stretch of road as well. “It’s been quite a ride watching this rebirth of Naples’ Main Street,” says Phil McCabe, a longtime merchant who owns the Inn on Fifth, the newly opened Avenue5 restaurant and several other Fifth Avenue South properties. “As a Fifth Avenue mainstay, I recognize that having a greater variety of shops and restaurants draws more pedestrians to the street—and that benefits us all.”

Naples’ first permanent residents, brothers John and Madison Weeks, arrived in 1876 and started a fishing camp on the northern edge of Gordon Pass. In 1925, the city’s population was 210. Today, more than 20,000 people live here.

Amber Frederiksen

It was 2009 when Marilyn’s owner (and namesake) Marilyn Hellman first opened her women’s European fashion boutique on Fifth Avenue South. In November 2013, she relocated to a space two doors west that is three times larger than her original location. “After five very successful years, due in part to our fabulous location, we realized that we needed more space,” says Hellman. “And there was no other option for a location than Fifth Avenue South. This is our home.”

Looking for a little creative inspiration? Fifth Avenue South is teeming with design businesses to help you discover your personal style. By LIZA GRANT SMITH Photography by michelle lee ribeiro English Traditions

Orson Welles once said, “Create your own visual style... let it be unique for yourself and yet identifiable for others.” But what exactly is style—and how do we find our own? Style is the sum of everything we choose to have around us and ultimately present to the world, each detail saying something about who we are. And lucky for

Naples residents and visitors, personal style can be found in the heart of Fifth Avenue South. Over the past five years, the 300 and 400 blocks of the Avenue have evolved into a collection of creative-minded, independent business owners focused not on selling products and services but on inspiring patrons to make their own statements. This area has become a destination for those looking to find their aesthetic in everything from fashion to furniture and all that lies between. Here, 10 of Fifth Avenue South’s inspired shops share their tips for defining personal style.

In 1925, electric service was available from 4 p.m. to midnight only—except Wednesdays, when power was turned on at 8 a.m. so women could get their ironing done early.

Tip #1: Style is both an art and a science. Don’t be afraid to mix elements of existing formulas to make a brand new creation. Sheryl Sashin of fine stationer Arabesque jokes that she can “never do something the way the vendor intended it to be sold.” And that’s exactly the way she likes it. “I always have to do something to reinvent it,” says Sashin. “It’s a process: sitting down with the people hosting the party and deciding what elements they like from many different invitations and melding them into something that is uniquely their own. Their personal color palette and their creative energy are brought together in a way that perhaps neither of us expected in the beginning.” Sashin stocks the store with whatever strikes her fancy at the moment, leaving visitors with a menagerie of creative fodder to

browse through to build their style concoction. Tip #2: Style staples can be comforting but also boring. Expose yourself to new ideas; they may lead you in an unexpected and exciting direction. Inside Joseph Wendt Custom Clothiers, male shoppers are faced with an offering unparalleled in Naples. Wendt created the store to showcase the highest quality artisan brands found in New York and Europe. He loves introducing clients to something they may have never seen before. “It’s always great when you can educate someone on finding a great product from great manufacturers who pride themselves on quality of materials and workmanship,” Wendt says. “That’s what shopping is really about: finding things that enhance your life, feel

great, look great and have a lot of value to them. That’s what we do, and that’s what we bring into the store.” Tip #3: Evolving style does not always necessitate a complete overhaul. Feel free to add elements piece by piece as your confidence grows. One way to manage the fear of change is by approaching the process slowly. Tammy Moreland has built an entire showroom upon that concept. While she has a workroom in another area of Naples, Moreland opened Skyler Interiors on Fifth Avenue South in early 2014 to showcase her eclectic, fashionforward aesthetic. Custom window treatments and upholstery, as well as carefully selected accessories, allow clients to breathe new life into their existing decor.

Arabesque

“Lots of local people have that traditional, dark West Indies furniture in their homes,” says Moreland. “We can brighten it up with new window treatments and accessories without getting rid of the furniture they love. It gives them a fresh look and starts them on a path to being more contemporary and modern.” Tip #4: Evaluate the individual pieces of the puzzle before attempting to create a style picture in its totality. Tasked with designing the lifestyle his clients dream of, architect James Knafo always looks (and listens) before he leaps. “To understand my clients’ hopes and dreams, I ask a lot of questions and listen very carefully to what he, she or they are saying,” says Knafo. “I’m listening for perceived problems they’re trying to solve. I’m listening for a desired mood or feeling they wish to achieve. I’m listening for clues about the

lifestyle they are trying to create. Then I design the desired relationships of the building to its environment, the relationship of all the spaces to each other and the relationship of all the materials to develop the vision into a reality.” The process may not always be an easy one, but the end result is a larger-than-life statement about those inhabiting the space. Tip #5: When you’re searching for personal style, ask for help— but never give up control. Remember: This is still YOUR quest. In their 39 years in the interior decorating business, Richard Atkin and Catherine Baker of Fifth Avenue Design Gallery say they have taken on the role of therapist, psychologist and even marriage

counselor. What is never part of their process, however, is imposing their aesthetic on a client. “We could easily do that, but it’s not who we are,” says Baker. “We educate clients.” Adds Atkin: “A client once told me, ‘I didn’t know my style until I expressed what I liked and Catherine explained to me what my style was.’ We want to achieve a look for clients that is their personality, their comfort zone, something they feel reflects how they live.” Tip #6: Sometimes style is not tangible but rather a feeling. While fit is important, Marilyn Hellman of Marilyn’s gauges the ultimate success of an outfit by the look it puts on the wearer’s face. “Women want to be something

special, but they just don’t know how to get from point A to point B,” says Hellman. “We should be there to move them along, slowly, as they get more excited about things. It’s a journey for them.” Thanks to her frequent trips to Europe, Hellman is able to procure fun treasures such as her collection of hats from 12 different designers. The boutique offers clients the kind of dress-up experience that elicits childhood giggles and unbridled happiness. Tip #7: Don’t immediately downsize your vision to address

Clay Cox, owner of Kitchens by Clay, is an expert at making the seemingly impossible possible. Whether it is a million-dollar kitchen a client needs to create with a small budget or a laundry list of appliances on a client’s wish list—with minimal inches to support them all—Cox has certainly dealt with his share of challenging assignments. “I encourage people to give us their whole wish list,” he says. “Pretend your kitchen is twice the size and let’s see what we can fit. The best thing we can do as experts is offer suggestions and solutions.” Tip #8: Start with a single, standout piece and build your style around it.

Casey Cordill, of fine European furnishings store English traditions, suggests trying to find one unique piece that truly speaks to you and let it ultimately represent your style. “A lot of things you see in our store are one-of-a-kind,” he says. “If you start out buying those core pieces, the other stuff is much easier to fill in. When we get a basis of where a client would like to go, we have lots of different suppliers and even source things for people outside of the lines that we carry.” Tip #9: Mix your metals. Stacie Carroll, manager of Peach Tree Designs, says one of the latest trends in interior design is combining different metals to accent your home. “Gold, silver, bronze or copper mixes in jewelry have been an accepted fashion statement for decades, and today it’s trending

strong in interiors,” she says. “Mixing metals doesn’t have to be a bold choice. Select a dominant metal like bronze and accent it with matte gold. Use your color scheme as a guide to integrate wall coverings, interesting textiles and a mix of metal finishes and textures to add character and interest to your interior.” Tip #10: Dream BIG. Interior designer Kelli Smith revels in doing all she can to create the perfect space for clients. “I am forever searching for the next big thing,” she says. “I crave authenticity, and that drives me to cultivate spaces that embody the essence of my clients. I work as a guide to interpret my clients’ vision and then navigate them through the process of turning those dreams into reality. When I think something is finished, I push forward and ask myself, ‘What more can I do with this space?’“ FIFTH AVENUE SOUTH 33

SPOTLIGHT

Each year, thousands of visitors and Naples residents alike flock to Fifth Avenue South for the ideal mix of family-friendly events and after-hours nightlife. Take a closer look at three favorite signature events—plus a sneak peek at one brand new celebration you won’t want to miss. By Jessica Bielak and Laurel Meny

ERIK KELLAR

Evening on Fifth Easily one of Naples’ most recognizable events, Evening on Fifth has been a time-honored tradition bringing live music and merriment to the Avenue for nearly two decades. “While Evening on Fifth has long been a community staple, it remains one of the most well-attended and enjoyable

events around,” says Sal Tenaglio, co-chair of the Fifth Avenue South Business Improvement Association’s (BID) events committee. On the second Thursday of each month during season, this vibrant sixblock stretch welcomes people of all ages, from adults to small children, to enjoy live musical acts in a variety of styles including jazz, country,

Halloween Spooktacular One of the most anticipated days of the year in Naples is October

31—Naples’ annual Halloween Spooktacular on Fifth. From 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., the entire Avenue is blocked to traffic as Fifth Avenue’s merchants, community members and civic organizations hand out candy and provide a safe spot for the area’s little ghosts and goblins to trick-or-treat. Halloween Spooktacular on Fifth isn’t just child’s play. Eventgoers of all ages are treated to a haunted house, live music, a street dance and spooky films playing on a giant movie screen. blues, Latin, folk, and good old rock and roll. And while the live music is a draw unto itself, there are also a few special, themed events throughout the year including Mardi Gras; Concierge, Activity Director and Front Line Host Night; RCC Night and ArtWalk. organizations join in the fun with kid- and adult-friendly programs and activities while at the same time providing information about their missions. Plus, event regulars Shy Wolf Sanctuary and the Kowiachobee Animal Preserve bring nature to life with unique wild animals and educational programs open to the public. But by far, the biggest event of the night is the costume contest. Adults, children and even pets in fun, creative costumes vie to win great prizes.

With no admission fee, more than 10,000 people are expected to attend the Halloween Spooktacular on Fifth this year. “This is undoubtedly the area’s most family-friendly, fun Halloween experience,” says Stefania Martin, vice president and marketing committee chair of BID. “It’s free of charge! Christmas Walk and Tree Lighting Ceremony As we bask in the beauty of Southwest Florida’s spectacular weather, picturesque beaches and lush, tropical foliage, it’s truly a sight to see Fifth Avenue South transform during the holidays. This joyous time of year begins December 4 with the lighting of the city tree, a tradition Naples residents look forward to year after

year. “Now in its fortieth year, the Christmas Walk and Tree Lighting Ceremony is a long-standing tradition that brings the community together to ceremoniously kick off the holiday season,” says Gloria Kovacs, chair of the BID’s industry committee. From 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Fifth Avenue South is closed to traffic as 12,000 revelers gather to watch the majestic tree light up in

Sugden Plaza. Musicians and choral groups fill the streets with sounds of the holidays, area dance troupes entertain and Santa makes his first appearance of the season. Fifth Avenue merchants also offer open houses to make the evening and holiday shopping even more festive and fun. For more information, call 239. 692.8436 or visit fifthavenue south.com.

This year, Fifth Avenue South is excited to announce a brand new event that will benefit—and entertain—the community. The Naples Grape Escape Food, Wine & Craft Beer Fest’s main event will take place along Fifth Avenue South on Saturday, November 15 and feature live music, select fine wines, craft beers and food pairings from local restaurants and sponsors. Proceeds will benefit the Rotary Club of Naples charity and scholarship programs. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit napleswine.org.

The first lots sold in Naples went for a mere $10 each. One of the original lot sales in Naples was deeded to Rose Cleveland, sister of then-President Grover Cleveland.
