CAPEHART
March marks Women’s History Month, a commemoration established back in the late 1970s to celebrate the often-overlooked contributions that women have made to, well, everything. Fastforward nearly 50 years, and the progress is palpable. Although inequalities still exist (think: the salary gap, the burden of childcare), today you’d be hardpressed (and downright ignorant) to overlook the influence of women in realms our grandmothers might not have dreamed possible. This month’s issue shines a spotlight on women who make Miami what it is today—and those who are using their influence to create an even brighter tomorrow. “Everyday She-Roes,” beginning on page 56, profiles four such dynamos. From advocating for the arts to crafting nutritious fare to fighting breast cancer to feeding souls (and celebs), these Magic City marvels are definitely women to watch. Designer and Miami resident Carolina Kleinman is a female founder doing things her own way. Her brand, Carolina K, eschews the lure of fast fashion. For Carolina, it’s all about preserving the integrity of indigenous artisans (who, it’s no surprise, are primarily women) and committing to eco-friendly materials in everything from the clothing she produces to the hangers in her stores. Check out her story in “The Force of Fashion” on page 72. And don’t miss this month’s installment of The Edit on page 30 to shop our editors’ picks from our favorite women-led businesses across South Florida. As a woman (and a native Miamian) I couldn’t imagine a more fitting issue to mark my new role as Aventura’s editor in chief. I spent my formative years in Miami, and though I’ve lived in a number of places in my life, the city has never left my heart. I look forward to sharing the best of the area with you each month. Here’s to new beginnings!

WARM-UP
Find Your BALANCE Husband and wife duo Kino MacGregor and Tim Feldmann both found yoga during some of the most difficult times in their lives. Feldmann was recovering from a near-fatal accident when a friend introduced him to yoga. “Since then, I have pursued yoga as my main purpose in life,” he says. “It is the place I go to learn to heal and to be with myself and other people.” MacGregor struggled with depression and says a moment of “spiritual desperation” brought her to the practice. Their combined 20 years of work and commitment to yoga have culminated with the opening of their new studio, Miami Yoga Garage, which focuses on the Ashtanga traditions of Asana, Vinyasa, and Tristana. “We are very grateful and excited about the possibility to create a space where students from all over Miami and all over the world can move deeper into the spiritual practice of yoga,” says MacGregor. The couple formerly worked from a shala on Miami Beach, but says their new Wynwood space is more inspiring. “The creative, fun, and alternative energy that pervades this neighborhood is invigorating,” says

MacGregor. “Since our opening, we have collaborated with musicians and artists during Art Basel and yogis from many different yoga styles and methods.” The couple plans to focus on classes, workshops, and collaborations and is working with the online yoga network Omstars to connect with students virtually. Making a Difference
The Bazaar for Good brings resources to disadvantaged groups across the globe A trip to India in 2018 changed Martha Graeff’s life forever. She had traveled there for an Ayurveda retreat, but a friend told her she couldn’t leave without visiting the Shanti Bhavan school, a nonprofit organization based in Bangalore, India, that’s dedicated to creating a self-sustainable educational structure for children from the lowest caste. There, the Brazilian model-turned-social entrepreneur learned of the school’s mission to take in impoverished kids until they are ready to find their footing in life. “This method impacted me deeply since it’s a different way to support children’s education,” says Graeff. Upon returning to Miami, Graeff fostered a passion for giving back and met with friend Danié GomezOrtigoza, a Mexican-American multiMireya Cisneros, Rony Seikaly, Danié Gomez-Ortigoza, Craig Robins, and Martha Graeff

media artist and the woman behind the Journey of a Braid blog. “We often spoke about our need to give back and find ways to build a structure that could benefit others given the frivolous fashion ambience we often found ourselves in,” says GomezOrtigoza. In 2018 they joined forces to launch The Bazaar for Good, a network of women who aid underprivileged children through the power of social media. “It was an instant success,” shares Graeff. “Joining forces with other women was what inspired me the most because together we can use our voices and platform in a more effective way.” One way The Bazaar for Good raises money is by hosting bazaars where friends, brands, and influencers shop donated items at discounted prices. Their next bazaar is scheduled for May. The Bazaar for Good designates a different country to focus its efforts on each year, and to date, the group has raised nearly $400,000 for those in need. Its members have donated proceeds to build a school in India, partnered with organizations in Venezuela, and this year will work with organizations including the I Love Venezuela Foundation and Mexico’s Hospital Pediatrico Infantil. “We’ve been lucky enough to partner with the Miami Design District, Funkshion, Raw Residency, Stitch Lab, fantastic friends and influencers, and various brands,” says Gomez-Ortigoza. “In reality what we have created is a big, powerful braid: a network that has proven to be stronger than its individuals.” (thebazaarforgood.org) —N.A.S.

House of Jewels Miami presents fashionistas with endless accessories What started as a passion project making hand-beaded bracelets and charms turned into a life-changing journey that fueled the inception of House of Jewels Miami. Founded by Cuban designer Jianni Acosta, this fashion-forward and affordable brand offers baubles that are durable, trendy, and cleverly designed. They are made from 18-karat-gold-plated stainless steel, which is known for its anti-rust properties when exposed to water or sweat. Plus, it’s hypoallergenic and safe for everyday wear. Shop Acosta’s favorite Bendecida necklace, which can be layered with additional pieces, much like the rest of her collection. Or opt for a subscription box to discover new styles. “We offer three different subscription boxes [in] one-, three-, or six-month durations,” says Acosta, noting her bestseller is the six-month plan. “It’s the best way to build up your jewelry collection without stressing about what to buy. We do all of the work for you.” Aside from offering chic pieces, this emerg-

While Uber and Lyft lead the pack of rideshare apps, there’s a new luxury platform that’s turning heads in Miami. Alto is only offered in select cities (Miami, Houston, Dallas, and Los Angeles, so far) and has a standardized fleet of fivestar vehicles with high-end amenities. And, for its new Alto + The Arts cars, the Texas-based brand partnered with artists across each city to outfit its vehicles in unique designs. Alto’s Miami artist is Sara Schroeder, an abstract painter who is also focused on empowering other local female artists. Schroeder uses “intuitive marks and saturated colors to convey energy and motion.”
Fashion and libations collide with Vera Wang Party prosecco. The beloved fashion and bridal designer’s namesake bubbly boasts citrus notes, with aromas of apple and stone fruit. Since lauching the prosecco last year, Wang has partnered with brands to offer unique flavors and products. Wang’s latest collab, Hibiscus Bellini, is a sorbet that blends her prosecco with Miami’s premium boozy ice cream brand, Aubi & Ramsa. It’s available to try at Aubi & Ramsa locations across South Florida. (verawang party.com; aubiramsa. com) —N.A.S. Vera Wang Party and Hibiscus Bellini sorbet
Her tropical designs add a playful touch and embrace the city’s vibrant vibes. “There is always something new and exciting happening and, therefore, always a reason to be sharing life with the people you love,” says Schroeder. Her paintings embrace these moments. “I use bold colors and lively marks and gestures to suggest this festive atmosphere,” she continues. “When [Miamians] show up in an Alto car, the idea ‘travels well.’ It feels apropos to be riding in the Alto + The Arts car to spend a day or evening enjoying the fun bits of life with your favorite people.” (ridealto.com) –N.A.S.

How to lead and benefit from a PLANT-BASED LIFESTYLE By Ivey Leidy Photography by Kent Anderson
W
e’ve all heard the trendy term “plant-based” these days, but trying to define exactly what it means seems to be somewhat of a mystery. The truth is if something is plant-based, it could be vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, or even include animal products. The main pillar of the plant-based lifestyle has to do with the ratio of plant-derived foods to animal-derived foods. If you lead a plant-based lifestyle, then you primarily eat plants, with an emphasis on whole, unprocessed foods that are closest to their natural state. The journalist Michael Pollan—author of such books as In Defense of Food and This is Your Mind on Plants—once said, “Don’t eat anything that won’t
» SIMPLE SWAPS » Instead of chicken, try tofu » Instead of red meat/steak, try portobello mushrooms » Instead of ground meat/poultry, try chickpeas or lentils
» Instead of bacon, try eggplant or zucchini chips
24
eventually rot.” Not only do processed foods like chips, crackers, cookies, sausages, and cured meats contain staggering amounts of refined sugars, fats, and sodium, but the added chemicals, artificial additives, and preservatives mean that they barely decompose outside the body—making you wonder what impact they have inside the body. There are ample benefits to a plant-based lifestyle, beginning with a lower risk of heart disease, the leading cause of death in the U.S. Eating a diet higher in healthy, unsaturated fats (like those found in olive oil, avocado, and certain nuts) and less saturated fats (like those in animal products) decreases
cholesterol. In addition, diets high in antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables reduce inflammation, the leading cause of chronic disease. Eating mostly plants can also mean great things for your waistline and the planet. Because whole fruits and vegetables contain fewer calories than meat, simply crowding out some of the animal products on your plate with more plant-derived foods can help you trim down. And countless studies have shown that decreasing meat consumption can save vast amounts of water and reduce greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. There are some potential drawbacks of a completely vegan diet. Common nutrient deficiencies associated with
this lifestyle are vitamin B12, iron, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, and vitamin D. However, there are plant-based options to address each one. For B12, opt for seaweed, sea vegetables, and nutritional yeast. For iron, go with unprocessed soy, and for zinc, go with lentils, chickpeas, black beans, cashews, quinoa, peas, spinach, and pumpkin seeds. Vegan sources of omega-3 fatty acids include chia seeds, hemp seeds, flax seeds, and walnuts. If you’re in need of some extra calcium, incorporate soybeans, navy beans, black beans, chickpeas, almonds, and sesame seeds into your diet. And two of the best ways to up your vitamin D quota are mushrooms and sunshine. Read on for more helpful info on leading a plant-based lifestyle.

Strengthening and hydrating eye remedies are a vital part of any daily beauty regime. The eye area, in general, is especially susceptible to signs of aging. Sun exposure, certain facial expressions, and poor lifestyle habits can speed up the development of crow’s feet, while the thin skin that is a natural part of our eyelid anatomy is prone to fine lines. Thankfully, potent ingredients including retinol, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin C can combat puffiness, sagging, wrinkles, and dark circles. Target the eyes and obtain a rested radiance with help from these six products.

Paint Store
Aventura’s Benjamin Moore is well known for its color matching experts, and paint professionals, property managers, and homeowners often use it as a resource. Upon changes in ownership in 2021, “Miller Paint” became BM Aventura—a hub of design expertise and solutions. New owner Tamar Royt of Silverwood Interiors LLC, the American offshoot of the Canadian company Silverwood Flooring and Interiors, has an established record in the design and construction industry for nearly two decades. When in Miami, Tamar learned the store was for sale due to the owner’s retirement. Despite the closures, delays, and other consequences of the pandemic, she believed in the potential of what the business could evolve into and took over ownership. Her first strides in transfo ming the local paint shop included staffing the sto e with the best color experts in the business by both retaining and recruiting new team members. In addition to her experience in the world of design, Tamar is a veteran entrepreneur whose skills has enabled this Benjamin Moore showroom—one of the largest Benjamin Moore showrooms in South Florida at nearly 3,000 square feet—to remain fully stocked at a time in which supply of quality paint and associated materials are a daily hassle. Under Tamar’s ownership and leadership, the store offers design and decor advice well beyond wall finishes. Personalized appointments a e available in store and on location.

THE DEFINITIVE GUIDE TO BUCKET-LIST TRAVEL, QUICK GETAWAYS, AND THE ART OF TRANSPORTATION
Enchanted Isles In Panama’s Gulf of Chiriquí, Islas Secas takes the private island experience to new heights By Paul Rubio
Visits to Islas Secas begin on Isla Cavada, strewn with seven units (inset) and amenities like Terazza, which houses the island restaurant, bar, and museum (below).

ost within the jungle-cloaked splendor of western Panama’s Gulf of Chiriquí, Islas Secas presents a private island vacation in tune with what modern travelers crave: nextlevel immersion in nature without compromising ultraluxury. An entire unspoiled archipelago underscored by palmstudded beaches, towering volcanic cliffs, and species-rich cobalt waters, Islas Secas initially unfolds as a magical nature reserve spanning 14 islands and approximately 20 nautical miles. But at the core of this verdant paradise lies an eponymous seven-unit resort that’s light on earth yet heavy on service, amenities, and details. At first, it’s hard to fully comprehend the scope of Islas Secas’ natural bounty. In all directions, as far as the eye can see, virgin islands rise one after another. One surfaces as a quintessential white-sand marvel, the next a windswept, skyscraping landmass housing pelagic bird colonies, the next an exhibition of overgrown jungle infringing upon black-sand lagoons. In between, water hues from cerulean to emerald erupt with charismatic marine life, including tropical reef fish, massive marlins, and pods of migrating humpback whales skirting the shorelines. As the extent of these dreamscapes grows clear, it begets the question: How does one approach and appreciate an entire private archipelago? Since there’s no one correct answer, Islas Secas posits—and delivers—multiple. It’s possible to pack days with land and water activities such as yoga, kayaking,

hiking, fishing, surfing, snorkeling, sailing, birdwatching, and motorized water sports. On the other hand, savoring multicourse ocean-to-table meals, luxuriating in eco-chic lodging, relaxing in an open-air spa, or being marooned on a farflung beach (with a personal bar) could be the way to go. Ultimately, any and every combination is attainable thanks to an all-star team dedicated to tailoring your castaway fantasy. (An all-inclusive policy that bundles activities, food, and drinks also helps.) Most of the personalization and execution takes place on the main island, Isla Cavada. As Secas’ sole developed island, Cavada is home base for staff, guests, and all the creature comforts one could dream of when staying on a secluded archipelago. That begins with striking accommodations in the form of four stylish wooden casitas and three safari-like tented suites, all with breathtaking hilltop views, alfresco dining areas, and sliding doors or canvas walls that effortlessly bring the outdoors in. The light-footed luxury continues with a colorful beachfront restaurant, which is flanked by a micro-museum of island artifacts and natural history plus an Ernest Hemingway– inspired bar, lounge, and library. At higher elevation, an infinity swimming pool overlooks one of the archipelago’s most dramatic rainforest-meets-the-sea vistas. Back at sea level, a swoon-worthy jungle spa excites with floral accents, copper tubs, and tradition-steeped treatments. Finally, an impressive water sports center boasts the latest and greatest toys, from hydrofoil boards to Seabobs (underwater scooters) and top-of-the-line fishing boats.
ISLA PALENQUE Those who aren’t quite ready to take on a private archipelago can still revel in the Gulf of Chiriquí’s magnificence. Say hello to Isla Palenque, a 400-acre private island retreat off Panama’s western mainland that’s a study in tropical, barefoot chic. With eight whimsical beachfront bungalows and a whopping seven beaches, total isolation is within reach on this band of oceanic jungle. Each bungalow is Instagramready, thanks to design-forward elements like front porch swings, oversized net hammocks, and open-air bathrooms with bathtubs in the sand. Each bungalow flaunts direct beach access to a wide tract idyllic for ambles, shelling, stargazing, and more. While Isla Palenque will entice those looking to perfect the art of doing nothing, it also promises plenty for the active and intrepid. Guided activities are offered daily, ranging from nature hikes in search of howler monkeys, to visits to local villages and coffee farms, to cocktail-making classes. A favorite pastime here, however, is unapologetic exploration, so grab a map and traverse dense jungle until you reach desolate beaches that you can enjoy all to yourself. Another standout of this property is its price point. With rates beginning at $780 per couple per night in low season, inclusive of meals and activities, Isla Palenque is one of the world’s most affordable upscale private islands. (islapalenque.com)

ESCAPE Deeper within Isla Cavada, unearth preColumbian archaeological wonders along nature trails and anticipate lookout points aplenty. Come low tide, head east as a land bridge connects to Limones Beach on a neighboring isle, where staff can stock kayaks, snorkels, snacks, and tropical cocktails for an afternoon of fun. Go further afield on one of the many boats docked at the water sports center (skippers included) and reach the coral beds at Toro, the bustling reef wall at Tres Marias, or a stunning swathe of Isla Pargo, where the team can arrange a beach barbecue complete with lounge seating and a full-service bar. Though much of Islas Secas’ excellence lies in its natural assets and experiences, it’s the personalities and details that make it extra special. For example, within the kitchen there’s a dedicated bread maker, an executive chef trained in one of Spain’s top Michelin-starred restaurants, and a pastry chef who makes nightly

dessert an artistic event to remember. The bar director is a veteran of Central America’s elite bar scene, while the activities director is one of Panama’s foremost authorities on bird-watching and guiding. All the while sustainability is woven into every part of the operation, from solar-generated energy throughout, to a locavore approach to island cuisine, to converting 100 percent of food waste into fertilizer. In total, Islas Secas is an immersive destination rooted in nature, serenity, cuisine, sustainability, and luxury. It’s a modern expression of Panama’s wild Pacific beauty and a next-gen private island resort for today’s ecominded jet set. (islassecas.com) «

COURTESY FOUR SEASONS HOTEL NEW ORLEANS
A Nod to NOLA
Let the good times roll at the Four Seasons Hotel New Orleans By Melissa Puppo
Clockwise from left: The Four Seasons Hotel New Orleans sits at the edge of the Mississippi River and is steps away from the French Quarter; guest rooms feature a motif of Louisiana’s state flower; the Chandelier Bar; buttermilk fried chicken at Miss River.
N
ew Orleans boasts a unique charm as diverse as its dialects. Nowhere else will you find street corners radiating with jazz ensembles and dotted with people waiting in line to indulge in fried dough. It’s upbeat and steeped in tradition, with culture aplenty. And now the new Four Seasons Hotel New Orleans stands at the ready to enhance your visit to the Crescent City. Like much of the city, the property has survived and thrived over the years. Before evolving into the crown jewel it is today, the structure housed the former World Trade Center. A three-year, half-billion-dollar renovation has turned the skyscraper into a modern marvel spanning 34 stories and topped by an observation deck with panoramic views of the city and the Mississippi River. Lead designer Bill Rooney transformed the interiors to reflect New Orleans’ historic architecture. The 341 guest rooms and suites feature a dramatic focal point above the beds: plaster triptychs depicting magnolias, the official state flower. Bathrooms are clad in white Carrara marble, and a soaking tub is an ideal reprieve after a long day exploring the French colonial
46
streets. Two Presidential Suites, themed in crimson red and cobalt blue, include a fitness room and butler’s pantry. And the hotel is brimming with local art. Of note is New Orleans–based artist Dawn Dedeaux’s Water Markers New Orleans: A City Below the Sea, which stands in the lobby as a reminder of the post-Katrina floods. The two on-site restaurants—both helmed by James Beard Award–winning chefs—capture the state’s cuisine and spirit in distinct ways. At his 1920s-inspired Miss River, chef Alon Shaya pens a “love letter to Louisiana.” Signature dishes range from a whole carved buttermilk fried chicken to a clay pot of dirty rice with duck
breast, duck egg yolk, and scallions. Head up to the fifth floor to dine at Chemin à la Mer, which translates to “pathway to the sea.” Chef Donald Link’s upbringing along the waterways of Southwest Louisiana inform the offerings at this sophisticated steak house, which folds in flavors from the West Indies and neighboring regions. Here, specialty steaks reign supreme, including an immaculate côte de boeuf for two carved tableside. And what’s a trip to New Orleans without some fresh seafood? Order from the grand oyster bar or dig into Ora King salmon accompanied by French lentils. After sampling the thrills of New Orleans’ nightlife, end the evening at the Four Seasons’ Chandelier Bar. As live jazz transports you to a bygone era, you’ll appreciate your Chandelier Martini all the more when you learn that the glass it comes in was cut from the same Bohemian crystal that’s shining above. RESORT, Reimagined WHETHER YOU’RE READY TO HIT THE LINKS, LOUNGE IN LUXURY, OR DO A BIT OF BOTH, PGA NATIONAL RESORT IN PALM BEACH GARDENS HAS IT ALL By Kristen Desmond LeFevre
S
ure, the big draw at Palm Beach Gardens’ PGA National Resort has always been the fact that it plays host to the PGA Tour’s Honda Classic. But a recent overhaul of the property—which first opened in 1980—has transformed this small-town stopover into a sophisticated must-stay with a boutique-like feel. Whether you visit for a bite to eat or a weekend away from it all, check out our favorite new features. RAISING THE BAR Enter under the resort’s soon-to-be iconic orange-and-white-striped awnings and you’re greeted by the lobby’s focal point (and the heart of its not-to-be missed happy hour): the bar. At its center stands a modern take on a banyan tree, illuminated by more than 1,500 LEDs. Score a bar-side seat and sip on a classic

cocktail (their old-fashioned is on point) while you plan your stylish staycation. EAT YOUR HEART OUT For breakfast, hit up Birdie’s Diner, serving comfort food with a retro vibe. Snag a booth and order the brioche bun egg sandwich with
smoked bacon, caramelized onions, and garlic aioli as you watch early birds addressing the first hole. Need something sweeter to start your day? The banana mudslide pancakes with banana brûlée are a can’t-miss. For fancier fare, reserve a table at The Butcher’s Club. Helmed by chef Jeremy Ford—Top Chef season 13 winner and executive chef of Miami’s wildly popular Stubborn Seed—this swank space offers elevated dining formerly unavailable in Palm Beach Gardens. Go for the gooey black truffle jalapeño poppers from the appetizer offerings, the tuna coconut ceviche from the raw bar, and the smoked 18-ounce prime rib eye as an entrée. HIT THE LINKS In addition to 90 holes of championship golf across five courses, the resort now features two new courses designed by Andy Staples. Encouraging match versus stroke play, The Match course offers a novel canvas for players of all abilities in a nontraditional setting. The Staple is 9 short holes (between 60 and 130 yards) that feature a variety of creative challenges—ideal for plenty of afterhours play and practice options. (pgaresort.com) «

The Need for SPEED
Bentley’s new Continental GT Speed is a 208-mph LOVE POEM to its mighty 12-cylinder engine By Howard Walker
50
To quote the comedic thespian Will Ferrell from his 2006 NASCARthemed cinematic romp Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, “America is all about speed. Hot, nasty, badass speed.” Talladega also gave the world a few other equally illuminating, speed-focused Ferrell observations, including “If you ain’t first, you’re last,” along with the pointed, go-for-it refrain of “Shake and bake.” Crush the throttle on Bentley’s newest speed demon, the 2022 Continental GT Speed, feel the thrust of its 650-horsepower twin-turbo 12-cylinder, and you too will have the urge to shout “Shake and bake!” But quietly please; it tends to scare passengers. Bentley proudly boasts that this latest all-wheel-drive GT Speed is the most dynamic road car in its more than 100-year history. The accolade for the speediest Bentley, however, still goes to the limited-run 2017 Continental Supersports, which had a reported top speed of 209 mph. By comparison, this newest hunk of burning British muscle can reach 208 mph. It can also catapult from zero to 60 mph in a mere 3.5 seconds, which is seriously impressive for a four-seat grand touring coupe that weighs about as much as a Peterbilt. What’s special about this latest GT Speed is the new componentry that allows it to sweep around corners at mind-warping velocities—and with the kind of precision the old Supersports could only dream of. Add to that Bentley’s first application of an electronic limited-slip rear differential, which does a great job of distributing all that towering power to the rear wheel with the most grip. It’s a big deal when you’re hurtling around a slippery freeway on-ramp 50 miles faster than you should be. When it comes time to stop in a hurry, the Speed has the largest front brakes currently fitted to a production car. The setup includes carbon

ceramic rotors the size of manhole covers (17.3 inches to be precise) and 10-piston calipers to do the clamping. But the headline act here is still that astonishing 6.0-liter 12-cylinder. Packing 650 hp—that’s 24 more than the regular GT—it’s the last hurrah for this petroleum-imbibing tour de force. Bentley’s switch to all-electric and hybrid power by 2026 means the W12 is probably not long for this world. Enjoy it while you can, but be mindful of the speedometer— holding onto your driver’s license is one of the challenges of shaking and baking in this rocket ship. Much of the GT Speed’s considerable appeal comes down to its remarkable duality. Yes, it’s searingly fast in a straight line and through the twisty bits. But it’s also refined, smooth, and serene for those times when you don’t want to play Mario Andretti. Select comfort mode and the air suspension will hoover up lumps and bumps like Mr. Brawny on kitchen spills, while the dual-clutch 8-speed automatic shifts with the silky smoothness of a hot knife through warm butter. From behind the wheel, it’s Bentley uber-luxury as usual. Diamond-quilted leather with suede-like Alcantara center panels covered the seats of our test car. Plus, the high-gloss carbon fiber veneer on the dash, red accent leather trim, and chrome “Speed” badging are all gorgeous. As for pricing, this new GT Speed coupe, which is also available as a convertible, kicks off at right around $275,000. Start loading on the carbon brakes, the Naim sound system, and the rotating instrument display, and you’re looking at well over $300,000. But now that RollsRoyce has stopped offering its Wraith coupe and Dawn droptop in the U.S., there’s really nothing that can compare with this exquisite, hardcharging Bentley. Shake and bake, indeed. «

The boat of choice for NFL superstar Tom Brady is a Dutch-built Wajer By Howard Walker Call it the Brady Factor. Before a slightly tipsy Tom Brady famously tossed the Vince Lombardi trophy from boat to boat during the post– Super Bowl floating victory parade through downtown Tampa last year, few U.S. boaters knew about Wajer. But when the former Tampa Bay Bucs quarterback turned up to the party in his silvery-blue, $2 million, 53-foot Wajer power yacht, the world collectively asked, “What the heck kind of boat is that?” It’s a Wajer 55 S from the young Dutch builder Wajer Yachts. Dorus Wajer started the company—which is based in Holland’s ancient Friesland region—in 1992, 52
and it has steadily grown to become one of the favored boutique builders for Europe’s jet set. These days, it’s hard to stand on Quai de l’Epi in St. Tropez’s old port or Port Hercule in Monaco and not see a stunning Wajer 55 or its smaller Wajer 38 sibling gliding by, filled with sunkissed revelers. The 55 was introduced in 2016 as a closed-bow model, which Wajer still offers. The more versatile 55 S center console came a couple years later, followed more recently by the 55 HT with an enclosed hardtop. Dutch masters Sinot Yacht Architecture and Design penned each version, all of which boast the same gorgeous hull design, with its knifeedge bow, uncluttered decks, and trademark inward-curving stern. And if Sinot sounds familiar, there’s a reason: It’s the same company behind Musashi, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison’s window-rich, 288-foot superyacht. Among the 55’s multitude of cool features, one of the best is the grand staircase rising from the swim platform. Another is the deep, wide-side decks that make moving around the boat safe and easy. The 55 also includes a nicely sized hardtop, with a big, tall windshield for good forward visibility. There are removable glass panels in the top to throw down plenty of light, and at the press of a button, a power sunshade whirrs out of the back of the hardtop to cover part of the rear deck. At the helm station you’ll find a quartet of comfy Stidd captain’s seats, plus two sleek Garmin navigation screens. The bow is ideal for sun worshippers, with its sunpad in front of the

windshield and a cozy sofa for two. And Wajer has cleverly created space in the sides of the hull to stow a couple of Seabob electric underwater scooters. But the back deck is where the action will be. Here, behind the helm, awaits an outdoor galley, with a grill, fridge, and icemaker. For alfresco dining, there’s an almost full-width table with seats for up to eight. Behind that is a massive, aft-facing sunpad for some serious tanning. Below decks, there’s decent space for four to crash in comfort for an overnight or weekend cruise. In addition to a forward queen berth and two singles tucked under the helm, there’s a small but efficient bathroom on the starboard side. To justify that $2 million and up price tag, POWER FILE Wajer uses only the finest materials, and PRICE: $2 MILLION the fit and finish are exceptional. ing sweet spot, and it’ll run more than 500 miles on a tank. Speaking of the Bradys, it seems Tom was so impressed with the 55 S that he’s already put in an order for Wajer’s new $6 million flagship 77-footer. Rumor has it that the Brady bunch will use the new 77, with its triple 900-hp Volvos, for trips to the Bahamas and keep the 55 for beach-hopping or Intracoastal cruising when their new mansion on Miami’s Indian Creek Island is move-in ready. One thing’s for sure: Going Dutch has never been so cool. «

WEALTH
SUPPLY & DEMAND
THE COVID ECONOMY The pandemic has impacted supply chain, inflation, wages, and MORE By Judy Martel Anyone who has scrambled over the past year to hire workers, paid higher prices at the checkout, or languished on a waiting list for a refrigerator knows that the tentacles of the COVID-19 pandemic and its associated shutdown in the spring of 2020 have stretched far beyond the immediate health crisis. The economy also took a big hit and is still struggling to recover. “We shut down the economy and now we’re coming to the realization that you can’t just plug it back in,” says Sean Snaith, director of the University of Central Florida’s Institute for Economic Forecasting. Consumers have been barraged with doomand-gloom predictions of chronic supplychain disruptions, inflation, labor shortages, and higher employment costs. 54
“What we’re seeing in the economy is analogous to what we’ve seen among those who have suffered long-term symptoms of COVID-19 after the initial infection,” Snaith says. “I call it economic long-COVID policy syndrome.” Snaith believes that the pandemic economic policy decisions were flawed from the start and the public will be feeling the adverse effects well into this year. “Pre-COVID, the economy was in pretty good shape, with a relatively healthy labor market. The shutdown immediately plunged us into a recession and the follow-
on spending, like the Cares Act [economic stimulus bill passed by Congress in 2020], continues to render adverse effects on the labor market and supply chain.” While it’s true that it is taking some time to emerge from the long-COVID economic slump, consumers are chomping at the bit
AVENTURA MAGAZINE
054_WEALTH_0322.indd 54
1/31/22 10:55 AM
to spend. After the economy recovered from the initial shock that sent it into a recession in early 2020, people emerged from lockdown restrictions and pent-up demand among consumers soared. A surge in spending often fuels the early stages of recovery after a recession, Snaith notes. “But this time was different,” he adds. “I’ve been calling it pent-up demand squared because after being literally pent-up during lockdown, a huge demand for everything was unleashed and ran headlong into a justin-time supply chain.” Over the past several years, technology has allowed suppliers to operate with just-in-time inventory, which means they can manufacture goods as needed and avoid the expense and potential waste of storing inventory that might not sell. Now this approach has failed to keep up with consumer demand. Of course, the situation has been compounded by a shortage of labor to handle the logistics of get-
ting supplies to consumers, including unloading freight at the country’s major ports. The supply-demand issues have also resulted in higher prices, which is now leading to potential inflation if wages can’t keep up with rising costs. In fact, U.S. inflation rose to 6.8 percent in 2021, the largest 12-month increase since 1982, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Snaith doesn’t believe we’ll see decades of inflation or stagflation (slow economic growth with high unemployment) but we could “flirt” with it. The good news is that interest rates remain low, the stock market has been performing well, and the government infrastructure spending program could drive economic growth, says Snaith. But supply
and demand is the dominant story for the time being. “Even those who didn’t lose jobs or income cut back their spending out of fear during the initial lockdown and recession in 2020,” he adds. “They didn’t take vacations, buy cars, or do things they could otherwise afford to do. But now demand is burning red-hot, and we’ve been playing catch-up ever since.” «

SHE-ROES Don’t step on their capes—these inspiring women are on a mission to make Miami a better place DEJHA CARRINGTON
BY MELISSA PUPPO PHOTOGRAPHY BY VANESSA ROGERS
ARTS ADVOCATE From an early age, the arts have been part of Dejha Carrington’s life. Her sister played the violin; her brother snapped photos. To foster Carrington’s artistic endeavors, her dad built a draft table to hold her Legos and art materials. “They really nurtured and cultivated that creative spirit,” she says. After college, she snagged a publicist job with the National Film Board of Canada. “From the very beginning, I saw my work at the intersection of community and arts and culture.” In 2005, she moved to South Florida. Initially motivated to escape the winter, she fell in love with the area after volunteering with Art Miami. “About two weeks later, I was trying to figure out how I could make this world more permanent,” she says. Today, she’s the vice president of strategic communications for YoungArts in Miami, which empowers young artists to pursue a life in the arts. She’s also the co-founder of Commissioner, a membership-based program that connects locals to artists in their cities to build stronger arts ecosystems. The project commissions four artists a year to create 40 works and also builds a community of art patrons to support them. Carrington’s arts advocacy has led to numerous speaking engagements, and she often finds herself in front of audiences of students who are considering art careers. “Speaking with students has been some of the most rewarding conversations,” she says. “What you’re seeing is a window into the future of the arts.” Carrington says she’s most motivated when she’s supporting art—whether that’s through her work at YoungArts or Commissioner or even her own collecting. “Artists are essential to our overall well-being,” she says. “I hope that people start thinking about how they can be involved and support artists, wherever they are in the journey.” MARCH 2022

KINGA LAMPERT
PINK PIONEER One in eight American women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. This alarming fact has been top of mind for Kinga Lampert since she was diagnosed with breast cancer at 31 years old. “It was a total shock,” Lampert recalls of her diagnosis. She had just given birth to her daughter and had a 1-year-old son at home. Thankfully, her treatment was a success. “Here I am 16 years later—in May it’s going to be 17 years—surviving breast cancer,” says Lampert, who has since dedicated her life to supporting breast cancer research. Originally from Warsaw, Poland, Lampert was working as a lawyer in New York City when she met her husband, Edward. They lived in Greenwich, Connecticut, for more than a decade before settling in Miami. She first learned of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) through her friendship with founder Evelyn Lauder while in New York. “What really attracted me to the mission of this particular organization is the singular focus on research,” she says. After Evelyn passed away 10 years ago, her husband, Leonard, asked Lampert if she’d like to take on a leadership role. She’s served as co-chair of the board of directors ever since and calls this work her “life’s mission.” Lampert primarily focuses on fundraising initiatives, raising awareness for the disease, and setting goals and objectives to ensure new discoveries bring us closer to a cure. “What we’ve been incredibly proud of is that BCRF-funded researchers have been a part of every major breakthrough in breast cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and metastasis in the last 30 years,” she says. “I always thought a cure was going to be a vaccine, pill, or drug, but now the more I learn and the more I see where science is going, I think a cure for breast cancer could just be being able to contain the disease.” Lampert hosts BCRF events locally including the Fashion Strikes Cancer benefit at the Miami Design District and the Hot Pink Luncheon with Bal Harbour Shops. She has forged a relationship with the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and she and her husband have become major donors to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, funding a new state-of-the-art research lab in 2016 that is now known as the Kinga and Edward Lampert Laboratory for Breast Cancer Research. AMARIS JONES
CHEF TO THE STARS Taste chef Amaris Jones’ soul food, and you’d think she’s always been a full-time chef. But her path to the culinary scene was far from linear. “I was a preacher’s kid,” says Jones, whose father owned one of the first storefront churches on South Street in Philadelphia. She moved to South Florida for work in 2000. But the real estate investment company where she’d been employed sold its assets and laid off the management team—including Jones. She pivoted and found her footing by managing celebrity homes. Then, she met Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs. “I managed Diddy’s house for a while, and I turned that into kind of like a concierge company,” she says. In 2004, she worked for high-profile clients like music producer Timbaland, coordinating everything from real estate searches to staffing chefs for events. “I would be at Puff’s house managing [it], and I always found myself in the kitchen looking at the chefs and their craft,” Jones recalls. “I’ve been cooking since I was like 10 years old. I was always an avid cook and just had this natural gift.” When Jones hosted dinner parties at home, guests would often ask where they could find similar food. The queries launched her culinary career, and she opened Motown-inspired South Street in the Design District in 2012. “I brought that culture—the warm, Southern, soul culture,” she says of her restaurant, which closed the following year. She’s since landed catering gigs with the NFL, BET Networks, Pérez Art Museum Miami, and Art Basel, to name a few, and has hosted private events all over the U.S. and beyond. Her focus today is on Chick’n Jones, a fast-casual concept that originated as a Sunday night pop-up at The Forge before turning into the permanent locale at Time Out Market Miami in 2021. Jones’ fundraising efforts and support of local organizations were honored in October at the No More Tears luncheon, which assists and empowers victims of human trafficking and domestic violence. She has partnered with the Miami affiliate of Common Threads, a nonprofit that provides children and families with nutrition education to encourage healthy habits, and was previously on the board for Dress for Success Miami. Jones has also appeared on TV shows like Food Fantasies on the Oprah Winfrey Network and is working on a cookbook. 60

CRISTIE BESU
GUILT-FREE GODDESS Cristie Besu’s schedule is anything but light: She’s balancing being a single mother to three kids with running Eat Me Guilt Free, a protein-packed and better-for-you line of bread, brownies, snacks, and tortilla wraps that she launched out of her kitchen in 2013. The first-generation Cuban-American and native Miamian’s brand began as a passion project; as a registered nurse and certified sports nutritionist, she sought to find a solution for her clients who were in search of a healthy alternative to sweets. “The chocolate brownie was born as a result of me experimenting [with] nutrition science and seeing [patients with diseases] because of high-processed foods and sugar,” says Besu. Her brownie line is now available at 7,500 retailers worldwide and encompasses a range of flavors. She even offers brownies of the month: March’s “Get Lucky” (her brand is known for its innuendos) centers on pistachio. She’s since rolled out a line of mini baguettes, and a cake mix is in the works, too. Besu has no plans of slowing down anytime soon. Aside from brownies, she has been busy baking up some pretty cool projects that align with her mission of empowering women. In 2021, Besu launched her You Glow Girl grant program. Born out of the pandemic, it invites women entrepreneur “glow-getters” to apply for a $10,000 grant that also includes mentorship to help advance their businesses. “More often than not, women entrepreneurs are not able to showcase their innovation in an industry because they can’t afford to do so,” she says. In honor of National Entrepreneurship Week last month, Besu rolled out her new-andimproved 2022 grant, which concludes in July. She’s also using her voice on a grander scale. In January, she gave a TEDx talk in Boca Raton titled “Women, Sex, and Power. Embrace All of You.” As a woman comfortable in her own skin, Besu reminded her audience that women are more powerful when they embrace their sexuality. “Long-standing social constructs have normalized silencing women,” she says. “Women should not be muted; no one should be. All of women’s experiences and feelings should be taken into account.” « 62

THE NEW NETWORK
Good old boys, be gone. Networks of fierce femmes are Miami’s real movers and shakers. By Kristen Desmond LeFevre Photography by Vanessa Rogers
Don’t call them “ladies who lunch.” Sure, they’re ladies. And yes, they’re meeting for lunch at Manolis Projects gallery in Little Haiti. But these are Miami mavens who get stuff done—and help women rise at the same time. So instead, just call them the new network that puts the magic in the Magic City. MYRTHIA NATALIE MOORE As co-owner of Manolis Projects gallery (with her artist husband, J. Steven Manolis), Myrthia Natalie Moore knows a thing or two about art curation. But she’s also the curator of today’s networking luncheon in the heart of her gallery—a haven for contemporary postWorld War II American art pieces by more than 40 artists including Hunt Slonem, Didier Aurat, Fernanda Lavera, Miles Slater, and Jojo Anavim. Moore has worked as both a finance professional in tax and investment planning, and as a marriage and family therapy counselor (anyone who has navigated joint finances can see synergies). But she also has a passion for art—a lens she says was honed by her architect father. And while today’s event is just as much about celebrating Manolis Projects’ latest art show, “Relishing Red: The Power of Redworld,” for Moore it’s also about nurturing a network of some of Miami’s most powerful and creative women. “I have this amazing network of women friends,” she says. “If one of us is having a business problem, we sit down and talk it over. We’re like each other’s board of directors: We identify the problem and we find ways to solve it.” But Moore says it’s more than just power MARCH 2022

moves. “We support each other on the journey, and those are the kind of women I wanted to invite to the gallery today.”

JUNE THOMSON MORRIS Miami isn’t rife with people whose history goes back generations—but Coral Gables native June Thomson Morris is among that group. Her mother, Dorothy Thomson, was the first (and only) female mayor of Coral Gables. When Thomson decided to throw her hat into the mayoral ring, The Miami Herald ran a story with the headline, “Distaffer Declares Intent to Run.” (For those unfamiliar with “distaffer”—a term thankfully out of vogue—it means a woman in a field known to be dominated by men.) Morris recalls how her mother’s opponent was a popular incumbent, and she had no backers except her family; June’s father ran an ad in the Herald that proudly announced his wife was “Supported by all my family: Janice, Joanne, June, Bobby, and Jack.” Despite the odds, Thomson won the 1979 election. (Among other accomplishments during her mayoral tenure, she is credited with saving the historic Biltmore Hotel.)
Morris was inspired by her mother’s ceiling-shattering political career, but she is a powerhouse in her own right: a storyteller who honed her craft first as an Emmy-winning television journalist and later as the founder and president of Profile Communications Group. Morris promotes people and businesses through the power of story. She primarily focuses her prowess on telling the broad history of her husband’s firm, The Allen Morris Company, and nonprofit organizations like Friends of Gables High, a group working to revitalize Coral Gables’ namesake school (and Morris’ alma mater). “I continue to be amazed at what a group of people can accomplish when they are determined to make a difference in their community,” she says. CARMEN BETANCOURT-LEWIS Carmen Betancourt-Lewis understands that same power of community. That’s why she cofounded Miami Today with her husband, Michael Lewis, nearly 40 years ago. “We created [it] to be a community-builder, pulling people together rather than pushing them apart,” she says of the newspaper she leads as vice president. “The only way we understand each other is if we know something about each other.” For Betancourt-Lewis, the imperative to reach out and broaden understanding is just as much about the media’s role

in the community as it about the connection between women. That’s why she organizes a monthly group called “The Women’s Room”—an invitation-only, Miami-based networking group that brings together successful women to discuss issues of the day. A recent topic (led by an expert guest speaker) was the art and life of Frida Kahlo. To add some fun, Betancourt-Lewis says, “everyone came dressed as the artist herself.” MAITE NOBO With Maite Nobo in attendance, this networking luncheon needs no dress-up to represent an accomplished artist. Her work—from paintings to scultpures—is on display throughout Manolis Projects. Her oversized painting in shades of red called Into Battle greets you as you enter the gallery. It’s both an honor and a privilege, Nobo says, to have her work displayed on-site. “It’s the premier gallery of South Florida with a unique vision for the future,” she says. “They help and promote artists of all backgrounds and diversity. They have an eye for exceptional art that will gain in value as well as in importance.” Nobo calls her artistic style “underground chic,” and is the creator of a proprietary art brand, Big. In a busy world full of constant stimulation, she says her work encourages the viewer to slow down. “My work is meant to calm your senses,” she says. “A refuge that promotes feeling safe and peaceful.”

RONIT NEUMAN Ronit Neuman is no stranger to the need for that kind of refuge—and the important role art plays in nurturing it. Back in 2016, she took a tour of her father Edeed Ben Josef’s latest real estate purchase: South Beach’s 1940s-era Sagamore Hotel. What she found was a proverbial blank canvas. Instantly, she says, she knew the space was crying out to be transformed into a major art destination—for guests and for the community at large. Today, under Neuman’s watchful eye, the Sagamore Hotel partners with leading international galleries and artists to curate unique art exhibits throughout the hotel—including wildly popular NFT art. “The Sagamore is not an ordinary hotel,” Neuman says. “It has always been known as the ‘Art Hotel’ with strong links to the local community and the art world.” KAREN WEINER ESCALERA The world of hotels—art-themed (like the Sagamore)

or otherwise—is Karen Weiner Escalera’s bread and butter. She’s president and chief strategist of KWE Partners, a marketing and public relations authority in the field of luxury travel and hospitality. Escalera’s love for the industry shines through in her passion-project-turned-viral-sensation: her blog at miamicurated.com. “Making new discoveries and having new experiences is part of my DNA, which is one of the reasons travel has always been a vocation and avocation,” she says of the blog she started as an outlet during a divorce. “I turned to my other passions: food, fashion, culture, a love of journalism.” Escalera says her passions also include events like today’s luncheon, where making new friendships and rekindling old ones is a reminder about the power of women connecting with one another. “Other women have always been a tremendous resource in my business and professional life,” she says. “I turn to them for everything from advice to business networking to ideas, and of course companionship.” Case in point: Over lunch, Neuman and Moore sketched out plans for an artistic collaboration between Manolis Projects and the Sagamore Hotel. Escalera invited Morris to write a piece for miamicurated. com as a guest blogger. “That’s an example of how women in Miami can support and lift one another up,” Morris says. 70

Beyond the synergies and networking, Escalera says, the group exchanged advice on everything from business moves to relationship issues. But what advice would these power women give to other women making their way in Miami? “Educate yourselves and be open-minded, and don’t worry so much about what people [will] think,” Betancourt-Lewis shares. “Live a life worthy of respect and value,” Nobo says. “People— especially women—are attracted to confidence and are eager to learn how to do it for themselves.” “We all move so fast through life…slow down and do what it takes to make those connections,” Morris advises. “Women are idea generators. We are creative beings. Sharing that knowledge, experience, and connection is what makes Miami so vibrant and forward-thinking.” « MARCH 2022

t all began in the valleys of Peru. It was 2005, and Argentinian-born fashion designer Carolina Kleinman decided to create a ready-to-wear label that would do more than just put pretty clothes on bodies. Here, situated in the charming city of Cusco—known for its Incan history—Kleinman sought to preserve the cultural and ancestral techniques long performed by its artisans. Traveling through the rural Andes and visiting market after market, she found that many of these methods of making crafts and textiles were being lost. So, on the cobblestone streets of Cusco, Kleinman had an epiphany: She would build a brand committed to protecting these authentic traditions through contemporary fashion—while empowering artisans across Latin America. Almost two decades later, Kleinman’s namesake label, Carolina K, has evolved into a global fashion brand that is sold in more than 100 stores worldwide. Dedicated to the preservation of Latin American crafts, cultures, and communities—and devoted to the use of eco-conscious materials—Kleinman goes beyond designing simple clothing to make a difference. Through her thoughtfully curated silhouettes, Kleinman turns old-world looks into something new. Each item is de-

tailed in a riot of colors and handmade by artisans from indigenous communities in Mexico, including Oaxaca, Puebla, and Chiapas. “I work with a lot of different communities,” says Kleinman. “Some of them we found while I was traveling to Oaxaca. I would go to [festivals] and then I would approach someone there at a market. It would end up, me in a town two hours away from Oaxaca, putting together a cooperative of women weavers that we’ve now been working with for all our Oaxacan tops and dresses.”
EMPOWERING ARTISANS
In San Juan del Río, Mexico, Kleinman has partnered with 40 female artisans who hand-produce many of her crocheted designs. Outside of the walls of this aged city— with its pastel-washed stone homes—Kleinman is also working to engage female artisans who have experienced violence at the hands of their domestic partners. Kleinman hopes that in connecting with these women, she’s not only MARCH 2022

instilling a sense of pride as they create beaded earrings and necklaces—many of which reflect the Wixarika spirit of the Huichol artisans from Mexico‚—but also empowering them to move beyond situations of abuse. Each of Kleinman’s handmade pieces—from her crocheted, patchwork crop tops to her maxi, robe-style, embroidered dresses—are adorned with a tag that’s hand-signed by each artisan. “Each woman [who] is creating a piece signs her name and puts how many days it took her to make that piece,” explains Kleinman. “It says 30 days. But of course, she’s not spending 15 hours a day because she has to cook and pick up her kids from school. But that’s how much it takes.” For Kleinman, it’s all about building relationships with her artisans. So, in-between spending 10 to 50 days constructing 76

the pieces, the artisans are also forging bonds with Kleinman and her team, creating concepts for her upcoming collections, and designing new silhouettes. “The way I’ve done it, usually, is by spending time with them and getting to know them and going to their homes, learning about their crafts, eating at their houses,” says Kleinman. “Really learning how they do their embroideries and crochet.” Sometimes, Kleinman admits, she’ll play it safe. “The first season that I work with them, I order something that they already know how to do,” she says. “Once that phase has passed, I start giving them new threads and new embroideries and something totally different than what they have been doing.” Kleinman has been partnering with artisan communities for more than 15 years—first in Bolivia and then expanding to Peru, Mexico, Ecuador, Colombia, and India. And she says many of those artisans she first began working with are still part of her team today. Sometimes, they enjoy meals together—either at their homes or at Kleinman’s home in Tepoztlán, a town an hour away from Mexico City. MARCH 2022

SOURCING SUSTAINABLY
With a growing passion to do something meaningful on a global scale, Kleinman has also built sustainability into the DNA of her brand, using eco-conscious materials and prioritizing natural and recycled fibers. She also embraces slow fashion, choosing processes that don’t use electricity, pesticides, or chemicals. Even Kleinman’s printing process is environmentally friendly, utilizing a dry print instead of water and relying on ecological and certified inks. And when it comes to swimwear, Kleinman incorporates Econyl and Ecocean, which are made from recycled polyester from PET bottles, industrial polyester wastes, and even discarded clothing. Constantly researching and seeking new initiatives that make an environmental impact, Kleinman hopes to eventually collaborate with companies that remove fishing nets from the ocean, so she can transform them into fabric. Kleinman uses a replacement for silk in all of her ready-to-wear clothing, in addition to implementing organic cotton and linen in all of her kimonos. While on a trip to India in 2018, Kleinman came up with a “Zero Waste” initiative after finding bags full of leftover fabric scraps in one of the factories.

“We started making one-of-a-kind dresses and pieces by mixing all of the prints,” says Kleinman. “Then, nothing goes to waste. Everything gets reused.” Kleinman’s commitment to sustainability “goes beyond production,” she says. Her brand’s shopping bags are made from organic cotton, her packaging is compostable, and her tags and hangers are made using recycled cardboard. Beyond her philosophy of using eco-friendly materials and responsible fabric choices, Kleinman’s collections are propelled by specific points of inspiration. In her upcoming Resort 2022 collection, Kleinman explores Africa: the Ndebele people and their painted villages. Another focus is on sea-themed elements inspired by biologist and painter Ernst Haeckel. Her PreFall 2021 collection—which was made entirely from organic materials and detailed with handembroidery, custom prints, and appliques— stands in juxtaposition to the geometric folklore that’s rooted in Latin American heritage. Although she impacts people across the globe, Kleinman splits her time between homes in Mexico and Miami. At her flagship store in the Little River district, it’s clear that Kleinman has made this bold boutique—accented with colorful furniture, sustainable decor, and personal photographs from her global travels— the heart of her ever-expanding universe. « MARCH 2022

DRINK, EAT, AND REPEAT: THERE’S PLENTY OF DELICIOUS TO CHOOSE FROM
OPENINGS
EPIC ESPAÑOLA Back in the early 1920s, Miami Beach’s Española Way was conceived as an artists’ colony in the fashion of New York’s Greenwich Village. Now celebrating its centennial, the pedestrian-only, Mediterranean Revival enclave has removed the bandages from an epic facelift, reimagining the street as a destination packed with upscale tenants. The anchor of this redux is Esmé Village, a Spanish-imbued boutique hotel and collection of restaurants spanning multiple buildings. Within Esmé Miami Beach Hotel, explore five personality-driven spaces for eating and imbibing, including three by famed hospitality brand Lost Boy & Co.: the retro-chic, spirit-centric El Salón, open-air The Roof at Esmé (which crowns and connects four original edifices), and
Bar Pintxo, a modern take on a pintxo bar (from the Spanish word for “skewer”), offering savory snacks on sticks and other delights. Beyond the hotel proper, the stylish thoroughfare is lined with new, tempting dining options aplenty. A standout is Tropezón, an Andalusian gin and tapas restaurant and bar. Another Lost Boy & Co.–backed endeavor, Tropezón’s design transports guests to 1960s southern Spain and pays homage to the country’s contemporary cuisine through a menu brimming with Andalusian, Arabic, and Mediterranean flavors, paired with an innovative beverage program. Look forward to traditional small plates like tortilla Española, gypsy gazpacho, and gambas al ajillo (grilled prawns with an achiote chili crunch), plus larger dishes like the arroz al orno (think: paella’s little sister). Wash it all down with Tropezón’s perfect Sangria or an eclectic gin-based cocktail—some rooted in infusions of Iberian staples like Marcona almonds, Iberico ham, and Hojiblanca olives. GOURMAND Q&A
Whiskey Kings In 2017, longtime friends Amani Macaulay and Chima Burey were on separate career paths in finance when an overdue catch-up and cocktails at a South Florida bar hatched an unexpected business idea: an original premium craft whiskey inspired by their shared love of butterscotch candy. Fastforward five years and multiple awards later (including the prestigious SIP Awards Consumers’ Choice Award in 2019), and the pair is rewriting the script on flavored whiskeys with Duke & Dame, their salted caramel– forward spirit that’s equal parts smooth, aromatic, and complex. Aventura spoke with the dynamic duo behind the Florida-based brand to get more insight on the whiskey that’s currently on the tip of everyone’s tongue—literally. (duke anddame.com) —P.R AVM: How did you conceptualize a whiskey different from those already on the market? Macaulay and Burey: When we created Duke & Dame, many flavored whiskeys were overly sweet and syrupy, made with lower quality whiskeys, and often had an artificial aftertaste. We saw an opportunity to offer something new in the category by creating a high-quality, 100 percent naturally flavored whiskey that would appeal to everyone: men, women, young, old, whiskey enthusiasts, whiskey newcomers, and everyone in between. In fact, the name Duke & Dame—with its representation of a man and a woman—signifies that this is a whiskey for everyone. Your whiskey has won several major awards for its taste. What’s your secret? Duke & Dame comprises a premium blend of 100 percent corn whiskeys, including a two-year aged bourbon that introduces notes of slightly charred orange, toffee, and spice. It offers a unique layered tasting experience featuring robust caramel aromas and flavors in the first sip, followed by distinct bourbon notes (e.g., hints of oak and spice) in subsequent sips.
92
Chima Burey (below left) and Amani Macaulay (below right) are the founders of Duke & Dame, a flavored whiskey company based in South Florida.
As a Florida-based brand, how do you keep true to your Sunshine State roots? When we created Duke & Dame, we wanted to create a true Florida brand. We worked with a distillery that produces corn-based whiskey using corn from Florida farms. We found a business in Hialeah to paint the artwork on our bottles. We
found a packaging manufacturer to produce our cartons in Miami Gardens. And of course, Chima is a Miami native. Where can we try an original cocktail that includes Duke & Dame locally? At Marcus Samuelsson’s Red Rooster in Overtown, we love The Dame, which combines our whiskey with grapefruit, lemon, red wine, and agave. Can your whiskey be used in desserts? We hear from consumers all the time that they love using our whiskey in their deserts (and even coquito), whether it’s a Duke & Dame caramel sauce or replacing rum with Duke & Dame in a rum cake recipe. At 800 Degrees Woodfired Kitchen in Aventura, the tres leches bread pudding is made with Hawaiian sweet bread and Duke & Dame. How do you prefer to drink Duke & Dame at home? On the rocks? Simple cocktail? Our go-to drinks at home are probably the Duke & Dame old-fashioned, Manhattan, or whiskey sour—very quick and easy to make. What’s next for Duke & Dame? We will expand the business within our current three markets (Florida, Michigan, and New York), go into new markets, and introduce additional flavor expressions. Follow us on Instagram (@dukeand damewhiskey) for the latest news, cocktail recipes, and a whole lot of whiskey inspiration.

features tropical flavors like coconut and pineapple mixed with cilantro, lime, and a little jalapeño for added heat. The light, refreshing dish pairs best with the Lych Please cocktail, a blend of hibiscusinfused gin with lychee liqueur and pineapple.
The signature burger rivals any meat burger. The entirely plant-based patty (no meat substitutes here) is topped with queso, dill pickles, lettuce, tomato, onion and served with a side of perfectly cooked truffle almond “Parmesan” fries. Pair the burger with a Mez-Cal Me Maybe, a thirst-quenching mix of mezcal, ginger liqueur, passionfruit, and lime.

FRENCH KISS LA PETITE MAISON BRINGS THE ALLURE OF THE FRENCH RIVIERA TO THE MAGIC CITY
A fixture in major metropolises like London, Dubai, and Hong Kong, French Riviera–inspired concept La Petite Maison (LPM) landed downtown in 2017, a testament to Miami’s newfound big city sophistication. Five years later, LPM Miami continues to wow regulars and visitors with elevated French Mediterranean and Niçoise fare in a whimsical and colorful setting, peppered with Belle Epoque flair and conversation-worthy art. Tables are set to indicate the start of a garden-fresh meal to remember: Alongside the fine plating and glassware, discover a trio of whole tomatoes, an oversized lemon, a bottle of premium olive oil, and a sea salt grinder—all accoutrements for the oven-to-table bread service. The garden motif extends to LPM’s cocktail menu, as exemplified by the Tomatini, an unlikely but legendary martini of Ketel One Vodka, cherry tomatoes, and ground peppercorn. A page-long food menu is populated with small plates and mains; greatest hits include yellowtail carpaccio with guacamole and citrus dressing, mushroom risotto with crème fraîche and aged Parmesan, salt-baked fillet of red fish with artichokes and tomatoes, and the tarte fine for dessert—a sweet-yetsavory, thinly sliced apple tart served with vanilla bean ice cream. PRETTY IN PINK FlyFuel is a new, fast-casual, clean-eating concept in Aventura, serving salads, protein-filled wraps, acai bowls, smoothies, cauliflower pizzas, and more. Here, co-founder and Aventura native Jesse Gimelstein shares the recipe for the eatery’s wildly popular Pretty in Pink fruit bowl, which can be enjoyed as an antioxidant-rich breakfast, post-workout refuel, or dessert. (eatflyfuel.com) —P.R.
INGREDIENTS (yields 1, 16-oz bowl) 2 oz. almond milk 1 pack frozen pitaya/dragon fruit (or 3.5 oz. of cubed, frozen dragon fruit) 1 cup frozen banana 3 tbsp. shredded coconut flakes 1/4 cup sliced bananas 1/4 cup chopped fresh strawberries 1 tbsp. honey Optional: 1 tbsp. of almond butter for a topping and/or 1/4 cup of granola as garnish
96
Place almond milk, frozen pitaya, and frozen banana in a blender and blend until smooth and creamy. Scoop mixture into a bowl and smooth out the top to create a flat surface. Add shredded coconut and then fan sliced banana in a ring, around the edge of the bowl. Place chopped strawberries directly in the center of the ring. Drizzle honey on top. Add optional almond butter, granola, or other toppings if desired.

Clockwise from left: Distillers such as Garrison Brothers, Woodinville Whiskey Company, and Koval produce some of the finest bourbon in the United States.

Bourbon without Borders Great American bourbon can be found from SEA TO SHINING SEA By Mark Spivak Most people think of Kentucky when they think of bourbon and with good reason: The stretch of land between Louisville and Lexington has all the essentials for great whiskey. In reality, bourbon—classified by Congress in 1964 as “a distinctive product of the United States”—can be made anywhere in America, provided it is produced from at least 51 percent corn and aged in charred oak barrels. Many of our finest distillers are scattered around the country. Here are a few to seek out and sample now. GARRISON BROTHERS: In 2006 Dan Garrison was awarded the first permit to distill bourbon outside Kentucky and Tennessee, in rural Hye, Texas. Since then, Garrison Brothers whiskey has achieved a cult following. Garrison produces Small Batch ($91) and Single Barrel ($111) bourbon, in addition to a range of expressions with exotic barrel finishes. The flagship Cowboy Bourbon ($375) is bottled at a whopping 131.3 proof or 65.65 percent alcohol. (garrisonbros.com) HUDSON: In 2001, New York got its first legal distillery since Prohibition when Ralph Erenzo and Brian Lee purchased the historic Tuthilltown Gristmill in Gardiner. Despite being bought by beverage giant 98
William Grant & Sons in 2010, Hudson has kept its pioneering spirit and unique identity. Its range includes Bright Lights, Big Bourbon ($45) and Four Part Harmony ($75), a blend of corn, rye, wheat, and malted barley. (hudsonwhiskey.com) KOVAL: Robert Birnecker drew on his Austrian distilling heritage when he opened Chicago’s first distillery since the mid-1800s with his wife, Sonat Birnecker Hart. Koval follows a grain-to-bottle philosophy and uses only the prime “heart cut” distillate to make an award-winning array of gin and liqueurs. Its Single Barrel Bourbon ($52) is organic, kosher, and consistently among the most highly rated whiskeys in Illinois. (koval-distillery.com)

WOODINVILLE WHISKEY COMPANY: Founded by Orlin Sorensen and Brett Carlile—students of the late Dave Pickerell (sometimes referred to as the Johnny Appleseed of American craft distilling)—Woodinville sources all its grain from the Omlin Family Farm in Quincy, Washington. It produces Straight Bourbon ($55) but is best known for the Port Cask Finish ($70), aged for five years and transferred to ruby Port casks for six months before release. (woodinvillewhiskeyco.com) WATERSHED: After starting Watershed in Columbus, Ohio, in 2010, Greg Lehman sold gin to keep the lights on while his bourbon matured in barrel. Last year, to commemorate the distillery’s tenth anniversary, he released a limited-edition Barrel Strength Bourbon ($90), aged for four years, finished in apple brandy casks, and bottled at 119.3 proof (nearly 60 percent alcohol). Rich and voluptuous, sweet and spicy all at once, it’s a beauty and worth the search. (watersheddistillery.com) CEDAR RIDGE: Jeff Quint started his distillery in 2005 and released his first whiskey five years later. Today his son, Murphy, has joined him as master distiller. All the corn for the Quints’ Iowa Bourbon ($35) is grown on the family farm in Winthrop, making it a true grain-to-glass operation. Seasonal releases include the Bottled-in-Bond and Double Barrel bourbons, both priced at $50. (cedarridgewhiskey.com) CLOSER TO HOME: Florida bourbon? Why not? The best known is probably from St. Augustine Distillery, which is housed in a restored 1907 icehouse. It makes Florida Straight Bourbon ($50), a Port Finished Bourbon ($80), and a barrel-strength expression called The Saint ($200). Also worthy of mention are Kozuba & Sons three-year Straight Bourbon from St. Petersburg ($35), Mr. Tom’s Bourbon from List Distillery in Fort Myers ($35), and Spirit of the Oak New American Bourbon from Dark Door Spirits in Tampa ($47). «

THE ART OF BANKSY: WITHOUT LIMITS
View more than 155 works by the provocative British artist Banksy at “The Art of Banksy: Without Limits,” now on view at Ice Palace Studios in Miami.
FAMOUSLY ANONYMOUS
Most people have heard of Banksy or recognize his street art, which touches upon pop cultural iconography and divisive political issues with poetry, energy, and humor. One of the British artist’s most impressive feats is his ability to remain famously anonymous after all these years. His work comes to life this spring with the exhibition “The Art of Banksy: Without Limits,” currently on display
at Ice Palace Studios in Miami. This marks the second city in the U.S. to debut this showing, following successful stints in Europe. Visitors can explore more than 155 of the artist’s certified prints, photos, lithographs, sculptures, and murals, as well as video mapping installations created only for this tour. Highlights include the sculpture Death of a Phone Booth, a section dedicated to Banksy’s activism related to immigration, and an infinity room that addresses the political world.
