For more than a decade, Diana “Didi” Contreras has made a name for herself in the street art game with her colorful, bright portraits of women donning walls from Miami to Boynton Beach. Now she’s taking things digital with NFTs. Also known as “non-fungible tokens,” these digital assets allow artists to monetize their digital art and protect themselves from dupes. Like a physical copy, the original can only be owned by one person; artists can also earn royalties. Funded by the Miami Lit Podcast, Contreras’ first NFT (dubbed Smoke Show) sold earlier this year for $1,000—and she’s hooked. “I’m getting a lot of new people who are interested in my art,” she says. “Then the people who are already collec-

tors are interested in investing in my work through NFTs.” One collector even showed Contreras where he “hung” one of her art pieces in a digital house he purchased. (The art can be viewed via a virtual reality headset.) While the new crypto world is an exciting venture for Contreras, she says she doesn’t think she could leave behind canvas and spray paint. “I love making art using my hands. One day in 2008, when her diabetic toddler’s sugar levels crashed, Shannon Allen was desperate for food—and fast. But as she drove, she was dismayed to see only unhealthy options. “I don’t think I’ve ever felt more powerless in my life,” she says, reflecting on the memory. Around the same time, Allen became frustrated while speaking before Congress about making insulin more accessible and affordable. She realized pharmaceutical companies aren’t incentivized to find a cure for diabetes (since they’d lose an income stream). Her struggle to find appropriate food on the road paired with her dismay at Congress led her to launch Grown, marrying the drive-through model with fresh, organic meals. Allen describes Grown as “real food cooked slow for fast people.” The first location opened in South Miami in 2016, offering drive-through options like omelets, wraps, and salads. FUNNY GIRL Domestic violence is one of the least funny topics out there, but survivor and comedian Brittany Brave manages to shine a light on it through stand-up. “Comedy is the art form where people want to hear the truth,” says Brave, who splits her time between Miami and New York City. But she’s no one-trick pony. Hailing from a long line of “funny, crazy-loud Italians,” Brave is the host of two podcasts, performs monthly at the Lincoln Eatery on Miami Beach, and co-produces the web series The Disastrous Dating Life of Diane Damone. AVM: What does it take to be funny? Brave: I think funny is honest and honest is funny. It’s got to be true to whatever’s happening in the moment. When it comes to material, if it’s real to you, and it happened to you, and it’s funny and important to you, that’s honest, and then that’ll be funny.

How do you survive “bombing”? When you bomb when you’re first starting, it’s like, “Oh my God, I silenced the room,” and I felt like I was going to die on stage. Once you’re a couple of years in and you’re comfortable and you’ve been doing this every night, a bomb maybe isn’t that painful. It’s just like, “Oh, it didn’t go as well as I thought.” But yeah, I’ve definitely had bombs; I’ve been booed.

How do you incorporate domestic violence into your comedy? I don’t subscribe to the fact that comedy needs to be dark or self-deprecating all the time. But I do subscribe to the fact that it needs to be real and truthful. So for me, talking about my experience with domestic violence in my stand-up and in my comedy just goes hand-in-hand. There’s no way I wouldn’t. I’m not making fun of it; I’m not making a joke about it because I think domestic violence is funny. I just think domestic violence needs to be talked about, and the way I choose to talk about it is through comedy.

It’s not a rare experience for Miamians. But let’s say you live someplace where it’s not so easy to hold an edible piece of sunshine—like a cherimoya, a passion fruit, or a sapodilla—in your hand. Enter Rane Roatta, co-owner of Miami Fruit. Working as a professional saxophonist wasn’t enough to pay the bills, so he started a side gig in 2015: picking up fruit from farms to sell at Miami markets. Your stomach lining absorbs everything you ingest and directs it into your bloodstream. The liver then breaks down and filters chemicals, drugs, alcohol, and any other toxins before they’re able to roam throughout your body. It does a very good job, but it can only handle so much. Overload it and these toxins are free to roam, affecting other organs as well as the liver itself. Heavy drinking is where the trouble lies. The liver can safely and effectively handle alcohol in moderation. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines drinking in moderation as 1 drink per day for women and 2 per day for men. What constitutes a drink? That would be 12 oz. of beer, 5 oz. of wine, 2 oz. of distilled spirits, and 3 oz. of Sherry or Port.

Here are a few other realistic principles to keep in mind: Cut the sugar. This not only lowers your chance of experiencing a hangover, but it also reduces calories. Opt for fresh citrus and club soda or sparkling mineral water instead of sugary juices and sodas. On the same note, stick to clear booze. The darker the spirit, the more congeners—impurities that are created during the aging process—which cause the liver to work harder and are more likely to cause a hangover. Choose gin, vodka, and 100 percent agave tequila to avoid congeners and additives. Finally, be a wine snob. Drier is better, as it’s lower in sugar and additives. Red wines, especially Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet, and rosé, all contain the heart-healthy antioxidant resveratrol. The best dry white wines are Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Grigio. Remember that the liver is the most regenerative organ in the body, so it’s never too late to improve its function by drinking less and supporting its health.

BEET Hummus with Cruciferous Crudités

Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Thoroughly wash and dry the beet. Using a parchment-lined baking sheet, drizzle beet with olive oil, sprinkle with salt, and bake for 1 hour. Rinse and strain chickpeas. Using a saucepan, add chickpeas, baking soda, and enough

The texture should be thick and creamy. If it’s too thick, add a little more ice water. Once the beet has cooled, remove skin and cut into cubes. Add chickpeas and the beet to your blender and blend until thick and creamy. Serve with cruciferous crudités such as broccoli, orange cauliflower, watermelon radishes, carrots, and cucumbers.

Using a juicer, juice the pineapple (including the core) and the turmeric. This can also be done in a blender and strained through a mesh sieve. This will yield about 2 cups pineapple turmeric juice.

Using a cocktail shaker, squeeze the lime and orange wedge and discard rinds. Add tequila to the shaker and fill 3/4 full with ice. Shake and strain over an ice-filled glass. Add 4 oz. of pineapple turmeric juice to the glass. You can also top with a splash of club soda, if desired.

hink “bank” and a few images come to mind: vaults, coffered ceilings, teller cages, and acres of dark wood. It’s the design aesthetic of old money, and it’s given even more gravitas when the clients are U.S. presidents. Such is the history of the Riggs Washington DC hotel (riggsdc.com), housed in the 1891 landmarked building that was once home to the capitol’s Riggs National Bank, which handled the finances of 23 presidents. This illustrious heritage did not go unnoted by Lore Group creative director Jacu Strauss, who helmed the property’s reimagining. Strauss preserved many of the original features of the Richardsonian Romanesque Revival building—one of few remaining in the city—including the iconic barrelvaulted lobby and coffered ceilings. Nods to the building’s past life are everywhere: a reception area recalls a teller window; decorative safes house minibars and, well, safes; and a giant medallion of the Goddess of Money looms in the lobby. One can even strike cocktail gold in the original bank vault, now transformed into subterranean bar Silver Lyan (silverlyan.com), undoubtedly one of Riggs’ high points. Mr Lyan (real name Ryan Chetiyawardana), of White Lyan and Dandelyan in London, has to be one of the most creative mixologists on the planet. Mr Lyan interprets a place’s history and culture into concoctions that have to be sipped to be believed. An example: While you wait for your Ceres Joker, the server brings you a

masked-bear figurine holding a helium balloon. The bear sways creepily until the Macallan- and sloe gin– based cocktail arrives. The server sets the string alight and the balloon detonates, releasing the scent of gunpowder into the drink. There are less dramatic ways to deliver a smoky cocktail, but where’s the fun in that? Riggs’ 181 guest rooms are modern interpretations of the early-twentieth-century style that informed the original building. The suites are inspired by first ladies, an inspiration that came to Strauss following a private tour of the White House. “I chose four lesserknown first ladies, but each had strong minds with regards to the atmosphere and culture they wanted to create in the White House,” he says. “I tapped into these legacies in an abstract way, to avoid creating a museum-like interior.” Like all interiors, it’s the small details that, when taken together, make a big statement. For instance, Strauss created “trophy cabinets” in Silver Lyan, displaying trophies women have received for such quirky things as a tractor-driving competition. He reiterated the building’s heritage through framed checks from Riggs National Bank (some more than 120 years old), which he’d collected over the years and installed on the wall behind the reception desk. “Riggs came with a rich history from its time as a bank during the golden ages and the architectural expression that came with it,” Strauss says. “I wanted to contrast this with aspects that were more playful [and] surprising moments throughout the hotel.” «

VOLKSWAGEN’s upcoming ID Buzz people carrier captures the groovy vibe of the original By Howard Walker

ull out your favorite psychedelic tie-dye, baggiest boho harem pants, and round sunglasses à la John Lennon because the VW bus is back. And I tell you, daddy-o, it’s really far-out. Volkswagen has reinvented the iconic, beloved, hippy-dippy Microbus. It’s called the ID Buzz and it’s all-electric. My reaction in four words? What took so long? This is an aesthetic masterpiece—a lofty-roofed people mover that captures the born-to-be-wild look and spirit of the original. Even better: It brings the design up to date with some very cool technology. The ID Buzz is based on the same electric “skateboard” platform used in VW’s new ID.4 electric crossover. When it lands on U.S. shores, it should have a range of around 300 miles and charge from 5 to 80 percent in less than 30 minutes. But it’s the design that’s so fun and funky. Google the boxy ’60s Microbus, and all the visual homages are there: the V-shaped front panel, that pizza-sized VW logo, the towering windshield up front, the two-tone paint—it even has its motor in the back. And it’s still as square as a loaf of bread, with mile-high sides and lots of windows. Sadly, there are no plans for the eight rooftop windows that came with the old Samba bus. two rows of seats. We’ll be getting a stretchedwheelbase Buzz, with room for three rows of pews and a bigger battery under the floor for a longer range and zippier performance. There will also be optional all-wheel drive courtesy of an extra electric motor up front. But if you think the exterior is hip, wait until you step into the driver’s seat. Think of it as Ikea meets the Apple Store, with all-vegan fabrics, cool dashtop displays, and driftwood-like veneer. Those front seats are more like Barcaloungers, with twin armrests, grippy bolstering, and elevated, see-the-world positioning. Orange upholstery? Yeah, we’re digging it.

Back in the second row there’s terrific legroom and headroom, and the seats can glide backward and forward for added flexibility. Flip the backrests forward to reveal one of the Buzz’s best features: storage space. This thing is as cavernous as a Pods unit, with a high roof and flat sides and floor that make it an ideal load-hauler. This dedication to storage is visible throughout the cabin. It might be something as simple as the small pocket in the back of the front seats that’s the exact size of a cell phone, or the oversize center console that’s big enough for a laptop. All this happy, smiley joy over the arrival of the all-new ID Buzz is tempered by one heart-wrenching revelation: We won’t be getting this adorable magic bus until 2024. It seems initial production will be for the short-wheelbase model, primarily for an eager European market. U.S. drivers will have to wait for the stretched-wheelbase version. Don’t expect it to be cheap either. VW’s smaller ID.4 compact SUV kicks off at $40,760, so I reckon a base price of $48,000 to $50,000. But the chance to cruise around in a modern-day version of one of the swinging sixties’ hippest and hippiest rides? Well, that’s priceless. «

here was no more enthusiastic a globe-trotter than the inquisitive, ginger-quaffed mystery-solver named Tintin. Created by Belgian cartoonist Hergé in 1929, Tintin traveled the world looking for adventure with his trusty canine sidekick, Snowy. Tintin and his joie de vivre no doubt inspired the owners of this gorgeous 112-foot, American-built Westport to name their new yacht after the lovable character. Since launching late last year, the mini-superyacht’s adventurous spirit was put to the test when it cruised from Westport’s yard in Port Angeles, Washington, through the Panama Canal, ending in Palm Beach just in time to shine at this year’s Palm Beach International Boat Show. Now, after a sudden change of plans, this dreamy luxury cruiser is 48

But (lucky for him) he has a wealth of upcoming acting roles on his plate to turn to—shifting a career that started with soap operas and scandalous liaisons into a serious body of character-based work.

FINDING A PASSION Like many successful people in showbiz, Metcalfe kicked off his career studying acting and film at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. In 1999, he took on the role of Miguel Lopez-Fitzgerald on NBC’s daytime drama Passions—a gig where Metcalfe says he “learned how to act” and “grew up” on the job. There was to be more passion to come—this time in the form of a clandestine relationship on the ABC hit series Desperate Housewives. Sparks flew on-screen between Metcalfe’s teenage heartthrob gardener (John Rowland) and Eva Longoria’s lonely trophy wife (Gabrielle Solis). Their instant chemistry—plus a healthy dose of Metcalfe’s good looks and acting chops—made him a household name, nearly overnight. Even the critics took notice: Metcalfe was honored with the 2005 Young Hollywood Award for Exciting New Face and was nominated for two Teen Choice Awards. That exposure launched Metcalfe from the small screen to the big one. In 2006, he was cast in his first major film role as the title character in the cult-classic teen comedy John Tucker Must Die, co-starring with Ashanti, Sophia Bush, Brittany Snow, and Jenny McCarthy. Three years later, he starred with Michael Douglas and Amber Tamblyn in a remake of the 1956 classic film Beyond a Reasonable Doubt, and opposite Erika Christensen in 2010’s The Tortured. When Desperate Housewives ended its run, Metcalfe returned to television, joining the cast of TNT’s remake of the 1980s hit prime-time drama series Dallas.

os Angeles may still be the center of the entertainment industry. But when Jesse Metcalfe recognized the pandemic-fueled shift toward working remotely—even for in-demand Hollywood actors—he decided to make the move from the City of Angels (where he’s lived for the past 23 years) to the Magic City. “The pandemic and lockdown changed the entertainment industry,” says Metcalfe. “With Zoom, Skype, and other ways to communicate, you don’t have to live in Los Angeles anymore.” Metcalfe moved into his new two-bedroom penthouse on Brickell Avenue in January and says the payoff has been worth the cross-country trek. “I am loving Miami,” he confesses. Relishing his new views of the bay and skyline, Metcalfe took January off to renovate his digs and settle into the city.

These days, however, Metcalfe is more about the beef than the buzz—admitting he’s looking for roles that let him delve deeply into characters. He recently got that chance on a film starring Dennis Quaid and Heather Graham. On a Wing and a Prayer (with a release date planned for August) is a faith-friendly feature film that’s based on a true story about a pair of airline pilots. Mixing drama and action, he also returns in the second installment of the Fortress trilogy this year alongside Chad Michael Murray and Bruce Willis (Metcalfe plays the son of the veteran actor, who announced his retirement from acting in March). This marks Metcalfe’s third movie with Willis, having partnered with him on last year’s actionthriller Hard Kill. Television is still an important part of Metcalfe’s repertoire, too. A staple star on the Hallmark Channel, he’s appeared in holiday-themed romance movies like Christmas

and executive producing Ships in the Night, the latest installment in Hallmark’s Martha’s Vineyard Mysteries. “I want to get a sense of being involved in everything from start to finish. An actor can get frustrated because he can’t see to the finish,” he says. “I need to be okay with the storytelling. I want to create an arc that is realistic. And I like to bring emotion to my lines. As an actor, creator, and producer, I want to move people.”

TRYING ON NEW TALENTS Music may just be one of those methods of movement, as Metcalfe is passionate about singing, songwriting, and playing guitar. He’s dabbled in mixing and matching music and acting, but he says that he’s newly interested in turning up the volume on his specific combo of skills. “I like music in movies, and I love to play music as a hobby,” he says. “I want to incorporate music into my acting roles more.” In his 2015 hit Hallmark romance-drama A Country Wedding with Autumn Reeser, Metcalfe showcased his singing and guitar-playing talents in the role of a superstar country singer returning to his Texas hometown. And on the newly rebranded GAC Family Channel (formerly known as Great American Country)—an outlet that has been making waves among fans of the kind of family rom-com programs that Hallmark made popular—Metcalfe starred in a recent Valentine’s Day film that gave him an opportunity to both act and show off his musical skills. In Harmony from the Heart, costarring Jessica Lowndes, Metcalfe plays a heart surgeon with a musical streak. Lowndes wrote both the script and two of the songs for the movie, and the storyline offered her and Metcalfe the chance to sing together on-screen.

Under the Stars, had a five-season run on the network’s wildly popular drama Chesapeake Shores, and led the television-film series Martha’s Vineyard Mysteries, where Metcalfe plays a retired detective trying to move forward from his troubled past. “I love Hallmark,” he says. “They have been great to me.” No matter the genre or venue, what Metcalfe craves these days is working with like-minded people, noting that he wants to feel good about his storytelling and have his own creative ideas honored in the scripts he takes on. “One of the most important elements in my career now is to work with people who want to achieve a balance between art and commerce,” he says. Next up? Getting more involved with the television and film industry on a larger scale. “I want to produce movies,” Metcalfe says. He recently got that chance, both starring in

Metcalfe will have plenty of time to pursue passion projects in his new Miami home. But when you’re on the go as much as he is, the key to keeping it all together is living a healthy lifestyle—which he says is easy to adopt here in South Florida. “I like the idea that fitness is at the forefront of life here,” he says. “Los Angeles can be healthy, but Miami is better for me now.” Metcalfe says his new hometown has a vibe that encourages him to do his utmost to look and feel good. To keep active and fit, he exercises five or six days a week with cardio, light weightlifting, and yoga. Plus, there’s always the beach—where Metcalfe can be spotted playing in the waves with his pit bull/schnoodle mix named Bowie. “He is in heaven at the beach,” Metcalfe says. “He really likes it here in Miami, so I am a happy dog dad.” Score that as two new and happy Miamians. “The city is beautiful, and for me, it is a breath of fresh air after so many years in Los Angeles,” Metcalfe says. “It is growing in sophistication and has so many diverse areas. I am looking forward to discovering everything it has to offer.” «

GET THE LOWDOWN Try adding the Twerkout to your already-established fitness routine: So you’re already doing cardio and lifting weights (or some other workout). But adding Hawkins’ routine to take things up a notch couldn’t be easier—or more fun. The Twerkout offers 45-minute online classes at noon Monday through Friday. Take a twerk break over lunch, or watch later at your leisure. At $30 a month, it’s basically a dollar a day—cheaper than your morning latte or pressed juice. She suggests starting with that and progressing to in-person classes. If that’s too much, consider simply building up the courage to turn your camera on during her Zoom classes. You can find any excuse in the world—we all have excuses—but investing in yourself is the best thing you can do for your health.” ● Hawkins incorporates these three workout components into her own daily routine: It’s not surprising that daily squats and cardio are part of Hawkins’ lineup, but that’s not all. “I do a lot of mat Pilates,” she says. “I love any type of floor work, like glute bridges.” When Hawkins is traveling, the workouts don’t stop. “I usually travel with light weights or a band because I like to add a little bit to the bodyweight stuff.” ● Hawkins isn’t afraid of cheat days: “I love pizza, so a cheat day for me is usually ordering my favorite pizza,” Hawkins admits. “I don’t really eat as clean as I would like, so I have a lot of cheat days. But I try to make up for it with extra cardio.” ●

Starr Hawkins (also known as Baby Momma Fit) is the creator and founder of the Twerkout: high-intensity Pilates classes set to loud rap music with twerk breaks. It’s a routine that started with a very specific and personal need. “I needed an outlet after I got sober,” Hawkins admits. Although she doesn’t have a professional dance background, Hawkins says she’s always loved to move. “I think since I loved Miami nightlife so much before I got sober, I wanted to incorporate that into my workouts. I love to incorporate dancing into a bootcamp style for the people who can’t really follow choreography.” Hawkins’ offerings include online classes for people all over the world, plus in-person sessions around town. “I’ve gotten messages and emails from clients who are 69 years old and from people who have never worked out. Or their husbands cheated on them. Or they are pregnant. They’ve all said the same thing: That I changed their lives.” What’s next for Hawkins? “I would love to do a workout at festivals like Coachella and Burning Man. Mimi Yoga, a global yoga community with members in more than 64 countries worldwide, has its headquarters in Wynwood. Founder Miriam “Mimi” Ghandour is all about working the body as well as the mind, encouraging her in-person and online students to find their voices and discover who they are by using their life experiences in an authentic and inspiring way. For Ghandour, this holistic approach is personal and necessary. After giving birth to a child with a developmental disability eight years ago, Ghandour moved to Miami from Saudi Arabia to have access to best-inclass medical care. “I became engrossed in yoga and the peace and clarity it provided me during this time,” she recalls. TUNE IN Finding the courage (and time) to start a yoga practice: “The perfect time to start is now,” Ghandour says. “There is no magic pill or shortcut; you are all that you need.” Find a form of exercise you enjoy, then find a community you connect with that is there to help you push yourself and to support you, she advises. Another key? Finding an instructor or teacher you connect with. “You’re more likely to stick with your workout if you connect [with] the instructor,” Ghandour says. ● Feeling self-conscious: “My response is always: Show up the way you are, even if you hate how you look in yoga pants.” Ghandour says. “You are perfect just as you are and now is the perfect time. You can do it.” ● Even yogis have cheat days: “A cheat day for me usually involves a juicy burger, fries, and some spicy margaritas,” Ghandour says. ●

FIRE IT UP Yes, Insta influencers have cheat days (even if they don’t post about them): “A cheat day for me usually means one big meal of something I love,” Prado says. “My go-to is pasta, then dessert and usually a glass of wine—or a few.” Prado also advises having a cheat meal instead of an entire day of cheating. “It’s how I can control myself. I practice the 80/20 rule: eating healthy 80 percent of the time and letting myself indulge 20 percent of the time. But I don’t judge myself whenever I fall off track. It’s normal. ... Life should be fun, not full of restrictions all the time. When I do fall off track, I will usually just make up for it by doing an extra workout that week to burn off the extra calories.” ● Prado knows you have excuses, but focus on the payoff instead: “We all have excuses for not doing the things we said we’d do or feel we should be doing,” she says. In her own fitness journey, Prado overcomes hesitation by focusing on what she wants rather than what she doesn’t want. “I think about the amazing energy I feel after a workout rather than thinking of the difficulty of getting to the gym,” she says. “I think about how good I’ll look in a bikini after working out and eating well rather than how I may look right now.” Prado notes that our brains are wired to think in the moment, but short-term thinking is a long-term problem. “Always try making your decisions based on your long-term goals, not what you want at the moment.” ●

PRADO’S TOP FIVE TIPS FOR FITNESS SUCCESS

Schedule it and show up. If it’s not on your schedule, it’s probably not going to happen.

Go for goals. Establish a clear and specific goal with a set timeline. Remember: You can’t hit a target you can’t see.

Be accountable. Find friends or family to join you on your journey. Accountability is one of the main keys to success.

Focus. Don’t stress over being perfect or seeing results right away. Instead, focus on developing healthy habits, such as eating well, sleeping well, and moving frequently.

Stick to your program. It won’t always be easy, fun, or exciting, but do it anyway. The power of discipline will take you places you never imagined.

BY LOLA THÉLIN There has long been a link between a human’s habitat and health. “You can make the case that it’s been around since the first humans created firepits for warmth and cooking, and created shelters for themselves in caves,” says Jamie Gold, a wellness design consultant. Known as wellness design and architecture, this concept that “well” buildings and homes enhance an occupant’s well-being—from the physical to the emotional—has seen a surge in recent years. Post-pandemic, society has gained a new appreciation for the power of environment. The idea of “building for human health” is now a mainstream idea, according to the Global Wellness Institute (GWI), the leading research organization for the wellness industry. At its Fall 2021 symposium, GWI offered revealing data on wellness real estate: The global market grew 22 percent on average annually, MAY/JUNE 2022

expanding from $148 billion in 2017 to $225 billion in 2019 to $275 billion in 2020. “There was a huge growth in wellness design pre-pandemic, as developers realized they could command higher prices for wellness communities,” says Gold, the author of Wellness by Design: A Room-byRoom Guide to Optimizing Your Home for Health, Fitness, and Happiness. “Now it’s not just a perceived ‘nice to have’ but a must-have as homebuyers seek shelter with health and safety in mind.” Indeed, South Florida high-rises, hotels, office buildings, and residences are seizing on the movement’s growth, implementing a variety of wellness-by-design practices that not only benefit a person’s health but also reduce hazard risk and offer accessibility, comfort, functionality, and enjoyment. A leading adviser in all things green, sustainable, and wellness-minded is Spinnaker Group, a West Palm Beach company that connects the built world with the latest sustainable, resilient, and healthy solutions. (drywall, sealants, and caulking) are offered in low emissions and finishes that incorporate recycled content. “Third-party testing and verification agencies have elevated testing and reporting standards, allowing manufacturers to have their products tested and receive certifications that demonstrate both industry standard compliances and the healthy benefits of their products,” says Fitzsimons. Spinnaker helped create a rooftop amenity space, complete with a running track, water features, and garden areas, for Optima Office Buildings in Aventura and Hallandale Beach. Hospitality properties seeking to go beyond the traditional spas and comfy beds are finding that design innovations in the wellness space are ideal tools. With a mission concentrated on health and wellness, the Amrit Ocean Resort & Residences on Singer Island will embed wellness design throughout its property when it opens later this year, beginning with the entrance’s moon gate embodying the five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. With 100,000 square feet dedicated to its spa

Enhanced lighting, acoustics and thermal comfort, improvements in air and water quality, and using materials with reduced toxins are popular design interventions, but Fitzsimons is also seeing a trend toward interior and exterior restorative spaces. For example, at 2000 Ocean, a boutique beachfront project in Hallandale Beach, lemon trees, tall bamboos, and a mixture of local flora augment the meditation gardens. “Lush greenery and plant life are essential to mental health and overall well-being, offering holistic benefits like improved mood and cognitive performance,” says Saige Robb, general manager at 2000 Ocean, which will also be home to the largest living wall in South Florida. When complete, more than 8,000 plant species will cover the 2,000 square feet of wall space, demonstrating how to seamlessly incorporate nature into a development. Some residential properties are configuring wellness by design on a luxurious level. The creators of Muse Residences, a 68-unit oceanfront condominium in Sunny Isles, teamed up with prominent alternative medicine advocate Dr. Deepak Chopra to offer a revolutionary wellness lifestyle concept focused on the benefits of air, water, and light. Seven residences feature advanced purification of air and water through whole-home air filtration, a stand-alone air purification upgrade, whole-home water filtration, and a shower infuser to reduce chlorine. With an oceanfront location, the condominium is a perfect candidate for dynamic lighting el-

and wellness facility, Amrit is slated to be the largest wellness center in the United States. To help all guests benefit the most from their experience, rooms will be equipped with a controlled lighting system that will influence their circadian rhythms. “The overall benefit of circadian lighting is to wake your body naturally without putting [it] into high stress,” says Neera Barot, a member of the Amrit ownership team. The property is also installing a reverse osmosis water filtration system to infuse water with natural minerals and reduce harmful contaminants, toxins, and impurities. ements, engineered to provide an optimal environment. Chopra selected the residences’ furnishings and color choices for their calming and positive effect on moods. His global brand is also working with E11even Hotel & Residences in Miami to build a spa and studio focusing on the mind-body connection, as well as holistic well-being. Of course, for many, well-being begins at home. Before the pandemic, Gold, who focuses exclusively on residential projects, saw two major groups: seniors wanting to live safely and comfortably in their own homes, and young parents moving into their first apartments or homes. “What I learned firsthand in my 50s was that many of the features that help [seniors] benefit users of all ages and abilities,” says Gold. “For example, a zero-barrier home entry is great for someone using a walker or wheelchair, but also for someone pushing a stroller. A handheld massaging showerhead and bench can help someone with fatigue or balance issues, but also feels great for the tired athlete post-marathon.” These simple design choices allow people to safely and independently age in their homes, which can ultimately lead to greater health and happiness. “Wellness in design comes in different

ways,” says Mitch Kunik, founding partner of Affinity Architects in Boca Raton, who recently completed Ocean Reef’s Residence Club, designed exclusively for aging in place. “Yes, it can be physical products like carpet, cabinetry, and paint, but [it’s] also how you plan architecture around the lifestyle. It’s designing a surrounding that allows a person to function within their own home and apartment as they age.” These are often mechanical choices. A door lever rather than a standard doorknob is easier to grip. A master bedroom closet without doors or steps removes potential obstacles. Installing electrical outlets at a certain height reduces the need to bend down to access them. At the GWI symposium, a top senior research fellow discussed how a few years ago this concept was only strongly recognized by a select industry group and yet to be understood by the general public, builders, developers, and investors. Post-pandemic, design that includes wellness architecture is a goal for many— whether at home, at work, or on vacation. “The recent pandemic has heightened that awareness,” says Fitzsimons. “There’s an urgency to implement greater wellness and health and safety initiatives across all sectors.” «

ARTHUR BREGMAN, MD A career devoted to innovations in psychiatry

When Arthur Bregman, MD, was training to be a psychiatrist in the 1970s, “there was a real stigma attached to mental health, even among medical students,” the Brooklyn, New York native recalls. Along with wondering why he’d chosen such an “odd” specialty, “people halfway expected me to be able to read minds.” Of course, he couldn’t. Still, he says, “I’ve always loved psychiatry, the mental health field, and giving to others.” After attending Stony Brook University in New York, he took a residency in adult psychiatry at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida, then went on to obtain a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry there. And he hasn’t stopped since 1979, when he earned his license: including over four decades as a longtime consultant with the University of Miami’s Department of Psychiatry. Since 1997, Bregman has held a variety of senior attending positions at Nicklaus Children’s (formerly Miami Children’s) Hospital—most recently, as chief of psychiatry. He has also established Bregman Medical group, a private psychiatric practice. But perhaps his greatest contributions have resulted from staying ahead—or at least just in front of—the curve. While at Nicklaus, Bregman developed a program that used a multidisciplinary approach to treat patients. “It was something that hadn’t been done before,” he recalls. Noticing his young patients’ reluctance to come to an office for treatment, he decided that they might be more comfortable off-site. Working with the State of Florida, he arranged for patients to be seen at Florida Baptist Children’s Home (FBCH), a nonprofit dedicated to providing services to underserved children. The project evolved into an established program called PsychSolutions, which, since its opening in 1993, has helped thousands of children, adults, and families. Building upon Bregman’s initial concept, it offers a wide range of therapies at home or school while psychiatric evaluations and medication management are provided at one of three licensed clinics, further reducing the need for hospitalization. It wasn’t the last time Bregman found himself ahead of trends. “A couple of years before the pandemic, I came up with the idea of telepsychiatry, working with IT engineers,” he says of his idea to develop encrypted software that would comply with state and federal confidentiality requirements. A great time-saver for patients, these virtual office visits were “as good as if not more effective in providing treatment,” notes Bregman. Along with reducing the stress that sometimes comes with in-person office visits, they also allow for timely treatment in a comfortable environment. Since the pandemic, Bregman says his entire practice is telemedicine. His latest project, on YouTube, is a series of podcasts ranging from dealing with depression and suicide to managing OCD, ADD/ADHD, and more. “Initially it was thought that children would outgrow ADHD but now we know that adults have it as well.” Like Lucy in the Peanuts cartoon, this psychiatrist is always “In” with regards to trends and caring for his patients—even from a distance. —Sandra Gurvis

YEILY HERNANDEZ MATO, MD

For this doctor, it’s never too late to start giving back

In 2008, Yeily Hernadez Mato, MD was a recent high school graduate— but she almost died at age 18 in a car accident. By 2017, Hernandez Mato was a medical student at St. George’s University School of Medicine. By 2019, she was on the cusp of starting her clinical rotation at University of Miami (UM)/Jackson Memorial—the very hospital where she’d been taken after the accident and “where they saved my life,” says Hernandez Mato, who received her MD in 2021. But the turnaround was made even more stunning by the fact that Hernandez Mato, who emigrated from Cuba at age 13 with her mother, had already hit a rough spot. “My mother worked 2 to 3 jobs to make ends meet,” she explains. But her mother became unemployed as Hernandez Mato struggled to recover from several operations, including facial reconstruction. “The doctors [at Jackson] were amazing, but I had no means for follow-up medical care.” Without health insurance, she turned to Community Health of South Florida (CHI), a nonprofit organization that works with vulnerable populations. “The doctors took great care of me and I promised myself that one day I would return and give back.” In late June of 2021, Hernandez Mato became a family medicine resident at the Brodes H. Hartley, Jr. Teaching Health Center at CHI. Hernandez Mato has always been focused on helping others. “My own experience as a patient in an underserved community gave me a sensitivity and appreciation for life that helps me connect with other patients,” she says. While in medical school in Grenada, Hernandez Mato received training in providing hyperbaric oxygen therapy to help prevent decompression sickness in local divers. She also worked with the Humanitarian Service Organization to provide supplies and medical assistance to families in need. In 2019, she returned to Miami. “I wanted to shift to domestic issues, such as providing comprehensive care, regardless of financial or immigration status and going deep into communities who need resources the most,” she says. Hernandez Mato hopes to pursue a fellowship in wound care/hyperbaric medicine. While still in medical school, she provided these treatments to patients at UM’s Wound Healing/Ostomy and Hyperbaric Medicine Clinic. “It widened my knowledge and interest in wound care,” she says. “I developed a greater understanding of the community’s needs.” Despite the many challenges she’s faced, Hernandez Mato has no regrets. “In life, it’s how to react and bounce back,” she says. “It’s whether you consider yourself a survivor instead of victim.” —S.G.

The style, elegance, and longevity of our sparkling wines come from the mountains of Trentino in the Italian Alps and its unique climate and terroir. This year we celebrate our 120th anniversary. Ferrari has earned worldwide recognition as the premier producer of Italian luxury sparkling wines and it is a symbol of the Italian art of living. Our winery has maintained its authentic roots as a family-owned company with deep ties to the Trentino region. Your sparkling wine is often compared to top Champagnes. What’s your take on that? Champagne represents a French tradition, while Ferrari Trento is an expression of Italian lifestyle. Ferrari Trento wines are made in the same traditional method and with the same grape varieties as Champagne, yet they are different and distinctive in that they come from the Italian Alps of the Trentino region, cultivated at great altitude. This Memorial Day weekend, make the most of surf, sand, and sky at the Hyundai Air & Sea Show taking over Miami Beach May 28-29. Daily activities start with ThunderCats boat races, sea performances by professional Jet Ski riders, and a Cigarette Powerboat racing demonstration showcasing 10 state-of-the-art boats. Then, look up as parachute teams and military craft take to the skies. A “Music Explosion” concert will kick off the evening’s festivities, with rock band 3 Doors Down set to perform Saturday.
