Warehouse WONDERS X When you Netflix and chill or stare up at the big screen, you might be looking at a set furnished with pieces provided by prop house Newel. The family-owned company boasts 150,000 square feet of warehouse space in New York City and Long Island. Now, with the recent purchase of Gary Rubinstein Antiques and Modern Design in Hollywood, Newel’s reach stretches the length of the eastern seaboard.

Producers on shows like The Gilded Age and Saturday Night Live regularly walk Newel’s warehouses to find props for upcoming episodes. If you’re a fan of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Euphoria, American Horror Story, Succession, John Wick, or Oppen-

heimer,, you’ve probably seen a Newel piece or two.

Plus, fashion houses including Ralph Lauren, Hugo Boss, and J.Crew regularly rent photo shoot items from Newel’s more than 35,000 holdings.

While Newel is best known for its warehouses frequented by those sourcing for television and film, the company also works with contemporary artists to give their works a home and rents pieces to interior designers who are staging properties—a big draw for Newel’s new Florida clientele.

Russian immigrant Meyer Newman founded Newel in 1939 after convincing the set director for a Broadway production of Pygmalion that he could furnish props for the show. Today, Newman’s greatgrandson, Jake Baer, is Newel’s fourth-generation owner. He took the reins as CEO in 2020. “I’ve been working in the company since I was 17 years old as a carpenter restoring furniture,” Baer says. “I realize we’re a big part of design history and I just want to continue to be that go-to source.” (newel.com) —Christiana Lilly

Vintage Vibes THE CASE FOR PRE-LOVED PIECES

Jonathan Coney loves curves—especially on furniture. The founder of Nine Frtn, Coney sources vintage furniture from estate and liquidation sales for resale. “I’m mostly really interested in the shapes; I like a lot of curves inside the home and general space, wherever it may be,” he explains. “The ’70s, the disco era, had some of the quirkiest, most interesting, and profound designs.” Coney got his start making his own furniture, but he soon found that vintage gems were in high demand online. Five years later, he established Nine Frtn (named for his birthday) and now sources items nationally and abroad. Here, he shares his experience and more. (instragram.com/ninefrtn)

Aventura: What’s the allure of vintage?

Coney: The pieces today, they’re mass-produced and made with very low-quality materials. … It’s soulless, the furniture you see in the stores today. I like the idea of having a space that’s curated and one-off.

How did you get your start in the world of sourcing secondhand goods?

I’ve always been into thrifting. I used to do it with my mom when I was younger—here in Miami off Northeast 125th Street, at the Red, White & Blue thrift store—and “look at pretty things,” as my mom would say.

Where have you had your best scores?

Florida is a wealthy state, so a lot of the beachfront properties have imported goods from all over the world. You find a lot of high-end pieces in these beautiful condos and beachfront properties. The pieces that are sought after at this point are vintage from the ’70s and the ’80s. It’s the pinnacle design era for the industry.

What’s next for you?

I do, in the end, want to create a line—a collection of my own that will supply the demand and have a run of 50 pieces or so. I’m working on a brick-and-mortar store; I’m on a waiting list for certain areas in Miami. For now, people can purchase my pieces through Instagram.

The rosy-hued bird isn’t just in the name at Tipsy Flamingo—it’s also sprinkled throughout the downtown Miami bar. A menagerie of new animal sculptures by artist Richard Orlinski has found its way to Lincoln Road, but an old-timer in the shopping district has been holding court for more than 20 years. Aventura: What are you most looking forward to at this year’s Miami Book Fair?

Diaz Gonzalez: I love meeting and connecting with readers in person at events like the Miami Book Fair. It adds depth to the book when a reader understands the story behind what’s written on the page.

This connection can fuel their love of reading and writing, and gives me the inspiration to continue crafting more stories.

Tell us a little bit about your experience with the event.

I first presented at the Miami Book Fair over 13 years ago when my debut novel, The Red Umbrella, first came out, and I have been fortunate enough to attend several times since then. I’ve met so many outstanding young readers, teachers, librarians, parents, and talented authors that it’s difficult to choose a favorite memory. A highlight is always when a fan asks me to sign one of my new books and sign their well-read (often slightly tattered) copy of one of my older novels.

What started as a two-day event in 1984, the Miami Book Fair (taking place November 12-19) has blossomed into an eight-day spectacle attended by the who’s who of international literary spheres and attracting more than 200,000 attendees and 500 authors annually. Among this year’s participating authors is Christina Diaz Gonzalez, a Miami-based Edgar Award winner who pens fiction for kids and adults, including such titles as The Red Umbrella, A Thunderous Whisper, and Moving Target. Her work has garnered serious national acclaim. Case in point? Her latest novel, The Bluest Sky, was one of two books selected to represent Florida’s literary heritage at the Library of Congress’ National Book Festival in Washington, D.C., this past August. Diaz Gonzalez (a native Floridian of Cuban descent) says the book—set during Cuba’s 1980 Mariel boatlift—is “dear to her heart” as a person with family and friends who fled communist Cuba during this time. What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

I began my professional career as a lawyer, but I always had this dream of being a writer. My best advice for a budding writer is to write the story you would like to read—the one that doesn’t yet exist— and to not worry about trends.

GLASS ARTIST BRENNA BAKER TURNS OUT FURNACE-FED DESIGNS IN HER HOLLYWOOD STUDIO

Brenna Baker knows how to take the heat. Since she was 14 years old, her favorite place has been the “hot shop,” where she transforms lime, sand, and soda into works of art. Like the molten glass she inflates, shapes, and sculpts, Baker has been forged by working with an art form that dates to the Roman Empire in the first century B.C. “My relationship with glass is always changing,” Baker says. “But I never get tired of it because there’s always so much room to grow and get better.”

Baker credits her initial fascination with glass to growing up in Corning, New York, and her proximity to the Corning Museum of Glass. After apprenticing under renowned glass artists including Pino Signoretto in Murano, Italy, Baker went on to become the youngest master gaffer and the second ever female gaffer employed by Steuben Glass, the celebrated American art glass manufacturing company that was founded in 1903.

“Glass isn’t so male-dominated now, but then, especially in a factory setting, it was,” 28

Baker says. “There’s a lot of manual labor and it’s not always glamorous, but I tried my hardest to keep it feminine. It’s a trade but with some creativity it becomes an art form.”

Ten years ago, Baker moved to South Florida and opened Hollywood Hot Glass, a glassblowing studio at the ArtsPark at Young Circle that offers workshops on land and also at sea onboard Celebrity Cruises’ Solstice, Equinox, and Eclipse ships. The curriculum is available to children as young as 3. That might give you pause, considering that glassblowing involves furnaces reaching temperatures up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

But Baker explains that the pastime isn’t as dangerous as it may seem.

“No one’s ever been burned in any of our four studios,” Baker says. “It’s a common misconception that glass is not safe. I love being able to share the glassmaking experience.

I never get tired of someone experiencing

glass for the first time.”

Last year, Baker appeared on the third season of Blown Away, a glassblowing competition series on Netflix. Each episode saw the participating glassblowers compete for the chance to win $60,000 and an artist residency at the Corning Museum of Glass. Though Baker was eliminated in the fourth episode, she credits the show with spreading the gospel of glassblowing to the masses.

“It gave our community so much exposure,” Baker says. “We’ve had so many more people interested in trying glassblowing for themselves after it aired.”

These days, Baker is more focused on her art than ever. In her Hollywood studio, she’s crafting high-end sculptural pedestal art and experimenting with large-scale installations for her series Solidifying Fluidity. Think: water, waves, and life-forms like birds.

“I would love to build a glass wave that breaks into a flock of ducks,” Baker says.

As the global functional drink market has grown into the billions in recent years, consumer awareness of adaptogens (defined as plants and mushrooms that help the body respond to stress, anxiety, and fatigue) has similarly skyrocketed. To satisfy the desires of today’s epicurean travelers, the club’s restaurant serves farm-fresh salads, artisan flatbread pizzas from a wood-fire oven, and Wagyu burgers during the day and refined multicourse presentations come night. A recent dinner included a starter of heirloom beet carpaccio and a main of Caribbean red snapper with crispy leeks and burnt lemon purée, followed by the most droolworthy of desserts: caramel-roasted pineapple with coconut ice cream, vanilla crumble, and mango gel (washed down with a rum pairing from the resort’s collection of more than 52 varieties).

Once a hot spot that has cooled a bit over the years, Coconut Grove is again on the rise. Long favored by artists and intellectuals, its Banyan-lined streets, bayfront parks, bohemian vibes, and sidewalk cafés combine to create a tropical oasis of tranquility. Sure, the Grove is a bit off-grid from other Miami marvels like Wynwood or South Beach. But this slower paced side of the Magic City has a sweet sophistication—and Mr. C Coconut Grove is at the heart of the area’s resurgence.

The “C” in Mr. C stands for “Cipriani.”

Following properties in Beverly Hills and Manhattan, the Miami outpost is the latest luxury boutique hotel conceived by Ignazio and Maggio Cipriani. The fourth-generation hoteliers are descended from Italy’s legendary Giuseppe Cipriani, who founded Harry’s Bar in Venice’s Piazza San Marco in 1931 and invented the Bellini, an aperitivo made of Prosecco and peach purée.

Forza FERRARI THE TWO-DOOR ROMA COUPE IS A 612-HORSEPOWER TOUR DE FORCE

In celebration of the upcoming cinematic tribute to Scuderia Ferrari founder and “Il Commendatore” himself, Enzo Ferrari, I felt it my duty to get behind the wheel of one of Maranello’s latest and greatest. Allow me to introduce you to la bella Roma.

But first, the movie. Unless you’ve been living in a yurt in Tristan da Cunha, you’ll know that Ferrari, directed by Michael Mann and starring Adam Driver as Enzo, is slated to open in theaters Christmas Day. I’m counting the hours.

Signore Ferrari, who passed away in 1988 at the ripe old age of 90, would have loved the Roma. When it was launched back in 2020, it marked a return to classic front-engine Ferrari grand touring V8 coupes. Here is the successor to Ferrari’s Portofino folding hardtop roadster and, at around a quarter of a million bucks, essentially the first rung on the Ferrari ladder. A “starter” Ferrari, if you will.

A lover of fine engines, Mr. Ferrari once said, “When you buy a Ferrari, you are paying for the engine. The rest you get for free.” I’m pretty sure he would have nodded in quiet appreciation of the Roma’s exquisite power plant.

Mounted well back under that curvy hood for near-perfect weight balance is a twin-turbocharged 3.9-liter V8. It’s one of the great Ferrari engines, packing an impressive 612 hp and 561 lb-ft, and with an affinity for shrieking to its 7,500-rpm redline.

It powers a car that has more curves than Gina Lollobrigida in her sultry prime, more tensed muscles than Chris Hemsworth in Thor. See it in the metal and there’s hardly a sharp edge or crease anywhere—from the thrusting sharknose front end, to the bulging rear haunches, to the swept-down roofline.

It was at the recent Monterey Car Week in California that Ferrari kindly

offered me the keys to an ever-so-subtle Grigio Medio–colored Roma. I had four hours, just long enough for a fast blast south along the snaking Pacific Coast Highway to Big Sur and the beloved Nepenthe coffee shop for a cappuccino.

The Roma is surprisingly spacious inside. Heck, there’s even a pair of rear seats—not that anyone over the age of 10 will fit back there.

But they fold flat and add to the luggage space. Pop the glass tailgate, and there’s room for a couple weekender bags.

One big disappointment here is that instead of some big red start button on the center console, Ferrari has opted for a capacitive touch surface on the bottom of the steering wheel. It uses haptic feedback to recognize your thumb and provides about as much sense of occasion in firing up that mighty V8 as you’d feel turning on the radio in a Kia. But once I ignite the motor and pull back on the oversize paddle shifter behind the wheel, I’m rolling. Along the picturesque 17-Mile Drive, with the crashing Pacific Ocean to my right, the Roma is a docile, refined grand tourer, its 8-speed dual-clutch automatic shifting with oily smoothness.

However, as I approach Highway 1 and stomp on the throttle, Dr. Jekyll becomes Mr. Hyde in short time. The sheer thrust as the Roma slingshots forward is beyond breathtaking, accompanied by a soundtrack matched only by Pavarotti hitting the high notes in Nessun Dorma.

Through Highway 1’s tight twists and turns, the Roma tracks on invisible rails no matter how hard you push. Yes, the steering, while laser precise, is a little too light in feel for my taste. But there’s also an agility, dynamism, and athleticism synonymous with Ferrari.

What the Roma delivers is that glorious blend of relaxed grand tourer and heart-stopping supercar, all wrapped up in a body that’s pure design perfection. Signore Ferrari would have approved. «

s it a boat? Is it a plane? Is it a floating penthouse? Is it a stealthy fighter jet for the seas? The answer, perhaps, is all the above. Meet the 78-foot Wallywhy150 from disruptive Italian builder Wally Yachts.

Yes, it’s weird. Wally has been doing weird for almost three decades, and when crafting this speedy motor cruiser, it shredded the

nautical design rulebook to create what it describes as a floating “spaceship.”

And a spaceship is exactly what it is. By doing away with traditional mini-superyacht features (such as walk-around side decks and a big foredeck) and stretching the beam to more than 22 feet, Wally designers managed to squeeze in 50 percent more interior space than comparable 78-footers.

Maybe the best example of this spaceenhancing design is the cavernous master suite, which is nestled on the main deck, right behind the vertical bow. It comes with wraparound windows—there’s even a window incorporated into the upright bow— to offer CinemaScope-

style, 270-degree forward views. Just imagine yourself luxuriating in the forward-facing double bed and seeing water all around. Kate and Leo on the bow of the Titanic didn’t have as panoramic a vista as this. Wally calls it the “amphitheater of the sea.”

Then there’s the open-plan saloon, which boasts ceilings that measure an unthinkable 8 feet, 2 inches tall. Sitting at the all-black dining table and gazing out through floorto-ceiling windows is like being in a glassfilled atrium.

In case you’ve never heard of Wally Yachts before (if you love boats, that’s hard to believe), it was founded in 1994 by Luca Bassani, a passionate Italian sailor, entrepreneur, and visionary. Now part of the burgeoning Ferretti Group, Wally has built some of the sexiest, most avant-garde, most technically advanced sailboats and motor yachts on the planet.

As for the rather oddball “Wally” name, it was inspired by the 1960s Hanna-Barbera

cartoon featuring a waterskiing Cajun alligator, Wally Gator. Bassani loved the character and named his first racing sailboat in his honor. And if you’re wondering about that “Wallywhy150” moniker, the “why” is short for “Wally Hybrid Yacht,” with the 150 reflecting the yacht’s interior volume rather than length.

The Why150 was one of the stars at the recent Cannes Yachting Festival in the South of France, breaking new ground by offering so much space while still being operatable by an owner and spouse.

In addition to that jaw-dropping primary suite, there are three more cabins on the lower deck, laid out as a spacious VIP plus a guest double and guest twin cabin. For those times you might need a crew, there are two more compact cabins in the bow.

outdoor living, with the rear sundeck featuring a hydraulic swim platform. When not being used for Busby Berkeley–coordinated diving, it can carry a 13-foot tender.

The upper deck is completely open and has a dining table and U-shaped sofa shaded by a large canvas top. Ahead is that trademark Wally pilothouse, with dark-tinted glass set at crazy angles.

As you’d expect, there’s no shortage of horsepower. Standard motors are triple Volvo 900-hp Penta D13s driving IPS pod drives, with the option of 1,000-hp versions. With

the bigger Volvos, expect a 23-knot top speed and a range of around 370 nautical miles courtesy of 2,378-gallon tanks.

Of course, the Wallywhy150 won’t be for everyone. The sheer amount of attention it’ll get outside any waterfront eatery may be a little overwhelming. But what you have here is a sexy, daring, outrageous family cruiser with an immense amount of interior space, some remarkable design features, and a level of quality and craftsmanship that justifies the roughly $6.7 million asking price. utting together the perfect holiday meal varies from table to table. And while there are some universal staples in any Thanksgiving spread—the turkey, of course, and sides like potatoes, gravy, and stuffing—there’s plenty of room to insert dishes that reflect and celebrate your family heritage. So leave it to restaurateur David Foulquier (who is of French and Persian descent) and his fiancée, Danielle Hultman (who is Swedish-American), to create a celebratory feast that kicks off with uni toast and caviar and is rounded out with lingonberries, pomegranate seeds, and Champagne.

“Thanksgiving is when I pull out all the stops,” Foulquier says as he preps ingredients, wearing an apron dotted with Grateful Dead bears. “Although I am American—and proudly so—my heritage is not. My dad is NOVEMBER 2023

French and my mom was Persian. Thanksgiving is about giving thanks and celebration.

And being French gourmands, we always go above and beyond. We celebrate by using the most beautiful ingredients and treating them with extra love. We’ve got the uni for my Japanese friends, pomegranate for my Persian side, foie gras in tribute to the French side, and the rest is pure American food.”

Originally from Manhattan’s Upper East Side, Foulquier became one of Miami’s youngest restaurateurs at the age of 25 when he opened Fooq’s in 2015—an eclectic eatery that made its mark in downtown Miami’s burgeoning Arts & Entertainment District at a time when not much else was drawing people to the neighborhood. With a father from Paris and a mother born in Tehran but raised in Lausanne, Switzerland, Foulquier grew up speaking French and Farsi until he attended kindergarten in New York City.

Hultman’s mother is American and her father is Swedish. She was born in Uppsala, Sweden, and grew up shuttling between there and Miami. She and Foulquier met in 2018 at the three-year anniversary of Fooq’s, a fitting meet-cute for two people obsessed with delicious food and hospitality.

thing she asked was, ‘Is there any vegetarian food?’” recalls Foulquier. He’s an avowed omnivore but also the consummate host; he reassured Hultman that yes, the restaurant could accommodate vegetarians and vegans. “She was there with some French DJs. I started flirting with her in French and we instantaneously hit it off,” he adds.

Since then, the couple has been nearly inseparable, managing Foulquier’s culinary ventures and traveling to music festivals together (Foulquier is die-hard Grateful Dead fan). They’ve attended Burning Man in Black Rock Desert, Nevada, for the past four years.

They plan to wed in Ibiza this summer.

With the charm of an old-school maître d’ and the gruff stamina of a seasoned line cook, Foulquier has held positions in both the front and back of the house, with stints at Michelin-starred restaurants like Manhattan fine-dining staple Daniel and at the culinary education center Restaurate Hoffman in Barcelona. Foulquier is also a certified sushi chef from the Tokyo Sushi Academy, an accolade that eventually led him to open his second concept, Sushi Noz in New York City.

Together with his brother, Josh, they started the restaurant group We All Gotta Eat. They opened Sushi Noz and Noz 17 in New York City, which both received Michelin Stars within the first year of opening.

After closing Fooq’s here in the Magic City during the pandemic, Foulquier regrouped and opened Eleventh Street Pizza in the same location in 2021. The spot was ranked as the No. 2 pizzeria in Florida by Barstool 58

Sports founder (and celebrated pizza vlogger at One Bite Pizza on YouTube) Dave Portnoy just two months after opening. The We All Gotta Eat group recently opened a second Eleventh Street Pizza in downtown Dadeland and has plans for multiple concepts in New York City, Los Angeles, and Miami—including a revival of Fooq’s in 2024.

For his personal Thanksgiving feast, though, Foulquier does what he’s been doing since he was a teenager—cook the entire meal himself. In fact, it was a 6-year-old Foulquier who convinced his parents to celebrate the American holiday in the first place.

“I couldn’t have cared less about the holiday,” explains Foulquier’s father, Olivier Foulquier. “My wife and I had a tradition of taking the family to Acapulco on the holiday break. November was the best time of year there,” he says with a laugh. “And then David broke our vacation tradition!” He adds that reading the story of the first Thanksgiving at the table became a new family tradition.

“I had to educate myself on the story—the history of immigrants coming to America.

We had to learn about the pilgrims, and we would read the story at the table.”

Before the younger Foulquier learned to

cook the dishes himself, his family had the dinner catered by none other than celebrity chef Daniel Boulud. The famous French toque is a family friend, dating back to the Foulquiers’ early years in New York City. “My mother and Daniel’s first wife went to middle school together in Lausanne,” explains Foulquier. And once they relocated to New York the school friends reconnected as part of a close-knit French community in Manhattan.

“So back in the day, Daniel used to make these beautiful dinners, and I’ll never forget once he came to our house and cooked,” Foulquier recalls. “And then when I was NOVEMBER 2023

around 14 years old, after my bar mitzvah, I took it upon myself to try and do it; pretty much since I was 15 I’ve been doing it myself. These are all classics from that repertoire.”

Foulquier starts the night with passed bites of uni toast topped with shaved truffle, plus foie gras terrine and Ossetra caviar from Caviar Russe. “From the time we opened Sushi Noz, we tried to incorporate authentic Japanese cooking into our Thanksgiving feast,” he says. “Sometimes we’ll have king crab legs, uni, or toro tuna tartare. Basically, anything that is luxurious and Japanese.

And right now we love these uni and black truffle toasts.”

For the main meal, there’s a 12-pound roasted turkey from Sunshine Purveyors, a 4-pound roasted Ora King salmon, cornbread stuffing with apple sausage, sweet potato mash with truffle butter, potatoes gratin, green beans, and roasted carrots.

After topping the roasted turkey with a generous amount of shaved truffles, Foulquier sabers a bottle of Champagne and adds pomegranate seeds to the sweet potato mash, plus lingonberry sauce on the side as a nod to Hultman’s Swedish roots. ters that Foulquier salvaged when Fooq’s closed, sitting down to eat in the couple’s two-bedroom apartment in South Beach with floor-to-ceiling views of Biscayne Bay. “We love the vibe here on the beach,” says Hultman. “We love the sunsets. We love waking our dog in the neighborhood.”

The cozy apartment is decorated with nods to the couple’s shared interests—Persian cookbooks and Burning Man photography books along with a colorful, oversize mandala batik that anchors the dining room wall.

A gift from Foulquier’s brother, the piece is no ordinary wall hanging—it’s an O.G. piece by artist Courtenay Pollock, who is credited with inventing the art of tie-dye in the 1960s and is widely known for the many backdrops he created for the Grateful Dead.

For dessert, there’s pumpkin cheesecake and apple crumble courtesy of Hultman’s mother, Michelle Kantzler, who is a Miami native and admits to having become Foulquier’s holiday sous chef. “We have a great time in the kitchen,” says Foul-

“Part of what’s so great about visiting the Design District is that there is always something new to see or experience,” says visionary developer Craig Robins.

In the last few years, the Design District has seen temporary installations by the likes of Es Devlin, the opening of flagship boutiques from Louis Vuitton Men and Chanel, structural collaborations with world-class architects and designers, the debuts of restaurants with Michelin cachet, and Art Week exhibitions from gallery royalty like Saatchi Yates, Larry Gagosian, and Jeffrey Deitch. “We combine commerce and culture, and the result is something entirely its own,” says Robins. “These are all the ingredients that bring people together, and when you build a community with elements like these that unite, it has resonance and power.”

Just over a decade ago, all this was mere renderings and blueprints, but Robins’ vision prevailed as he found the right partners and tenants to join him. “I think both artists and brands know by now that we are good partners and that we value creativity. There is mutual respect.”

But Robins is not one to rest on his laurels. Plans for the area include a class-A office building designed by Arquitectonica and featuring art

by Daniel Arsham, the transformation of the historic Moore Building into a private club with a boutique hotel, and store expansions from luxury brands. “My creative energy is on continued development and growth,” says Robins. “I feel like this is just the beginning.” (miamidesigndistrict.net)

Ximena Caminos established herself as a cultural disruptor of the coolest kind with the co-founding of Faena Art, a nonprofit that, in its own words, “commissions, produces, and houses cross-disciplinary artistic experiences.” These days, in addition to various cultural and philanthropic commitments, Caminos serves as co-founder and artistic director of Aorist, a platform for artists and collectors to explore digital art and NFTs, and as head of HoneyLab Creative, a think tank for the nontraditional projects that echo her mantra: “art as a tool for change.”

Her latest undertaking, however, brings all the qualities of her work together like never before—and tips its hat to sustainability in the process. The ReefLine will be an underwater public sculpture park that will also serve as a much-needed artificial reef system. When completed, the project (also a 7-mile-long snorkel trail) will stretch from Fourth Street in South Beach north to Bal Harbour, but its fruition is ambitious to say the least.

“I called Shohei Shigematsu [the renowned OMA architect] to be the master planner,” says Caminos. “Then I put together an amazing cross-disciplinary team of scientists, engineers, climate advocates, and artists.”

Participating creatives include Leandro Erlich, Petroc Sesti, Refik Anadol, and Andres Reisinger. The first phase is scheduled for early 2024 with Erlich’s Concrete Coral, a series of car sculptures caught in an apocalyptic traffic jam.

By all accounts, Caminos has Miami on her side. So far, she’s received an $80,000 award from the Knight Foundation and a $5 million bond issue from the City of Miami Beach, which praised the project’s potential cultural impact.

“One of the things I enjoy most is creating, and if that creation is sparked by collaboration, I just flow in my best zone,” says Caminos. “The ReefLine was born out of that type of energy. It started as a conversation with a friend about reefs, and I saw art as a way to connect all the dots.” (thereefline.org)

Product Makes Perfect Product and interior designer Luis Pons established his Miami Beach Design Lab in 2003 to explore the extra in ordinary design. “It all comes from my personal need to translate reality, changing its perception and creating new meaning,” says Pons.

True to its name, Design Lab is an experimental hub for ideas and concepts including furniture, lighting, textiles, and ceramics, plus full-on commercial and private design commissions. When it comes to product design, Pons is interested in “popular and simple solutions that carry strong impressions in our subconscious and are fully integrated in our daily human routine.” Case in point: the Torii, a pandemic-inspired three-dimensional structure that acts as a temporary wall in outdoor environments, although Pons’ own description is much more poetic: “a customizable social-distancing device that embraces, protects, and enhances the experience of togetherness while making people feel safe.”

While Pons has made a career out of bringing out-of-the-box ideas to fruition (from inflatable furniture to lamps made out of Slinkies), the Torii aligns with the designer’s mantra post-COVID. “The pandemic gave me a new perspective that allows us to align our actions with our purpose,” he says. “We removed distractions and unnecessary expenses and now produce more with less.”

As for what’s ahead? “Our desire is to engage in projects that raise the standards of living for people,” says Pons. “We want to plant more and build less.” (luispons.com)

Furniture designer James Quinaz is close to the theme of his latest series, The Sidewalk, a collection of low-profile tables that reimagine the Miami walkways he knows well.

“I did a lot of walking in my teenage years, so I think I had a different experience than a lot of Miamians do,” says the designer, who moved back to the city at the height of the pandemic in 2020. “In high school, I had a studio on Biscayne Boulevard and 81st Clockwise from inset: James Quinaz sitting Street. That meant that I’d sometimes walk on the Bay chair, a the 40-plus blocks from [school] to the studio piece made from found objects; a table from and then all the way home to El Portal. It’s my way of staying connected and experiencing the city.”

Recasting personal experiences as tangible objects has long been a part of Quinaz’s work. “I just love when people look at something familiar, like a chair or a table, and sort of do a double take. Like, ‘what I am looking at?’” says Quinaz. Consider his Bay Store collection of furniture made from objects found in Biscayne Bay and the Miami River. “Sometimes you make your point with materials that no one would expect, like junk from the bottom of a river. Other times, you can get the same effect by using a high-end material in an unexpected way, like Guanacaste wood made to look like a sidewalk.”

Experimentation like this has been par for the course for Quinaz, who learned building and carpentry from his father. He got to do plenty of it as a window display artist for Saks Fifth Avenue. “I ran a 10,000-square-foot woodshop in Queens, managed a team of carpenters, and worked with some of the largest fashion brands in the world,” he says. “Those lessons come in handy almost every day.”

Today, he admits that his schedule is much looser. “I work in sprints where I get a lot of work done in a short period of time and then take a break. But after a week or two, I’m ready to get back to the shop and test out new ideas.” (quinazstudio.com) 66

RENE Gonzalez When asked if he’s a forward thinker, architect Rene Gonzalez doesn’t take long to come up with an answer. “One thing I know about myself and my work is that I am never nostalgic, nor do I rely on any notions of what a project should be,” he says. “Instead, I search out a fresh expression that is generated from exploring ideas unique to each project. I then distill those ideas to find the essence, the seed, of each concept, which then generates the architecture.”

Gonzalez’s work is tactile, holistic, and sensual, blurring the lines between architecture, nature, and art. It’s also actively committed to sustainability. Those qualities, coupled with his keen understanding of his role, have served him well since he opened his practice in 1997.

Two of his most recent commissions are here in our backyard. For the Galt Estate in Fort Lauderdale, Gonzalez is reinventing what was once known as La Maison Blanche, a 1936 structure considered one of the most iconic trophy properties in the state. “We’ve been charged with completely reinterpreting the three lots into one unified compound with multiple structures, waterfalls, pools, and lush landscaping,” says Gonzalez.

Also on his to-do list: Surf Row at 8000 Collins Avenue in Surfside, a residential complex with eight beach houses that will rise opposite the site where Champlain Towers South once stood. “These homes utilize light and nature to inspire,” says Gonzalez. “They connect us with the environment.”

In addition to these two endeavors, Gonzalez is also collaborating with the publishing house Arquine on a book on his Prairie Residence and hopes to be involved in a center for Cuban culture in the near future. “Since COVID I’ve made a conscious decision to work on fewer projects, which allows me to have a more intimate relationship with my clients,” says Gonzalez. “And I’m only going to work on projects that I am extremely passionate about.” (renegonzalezarchitects.com)

When Laurinda Spear and Margarita Blanco opened ArquitectonicaGEO in 2005, the two principals found themselves educating skeptical clients about the importance of landscape architecture and sustainable design practices.

“It was difficult in the beginning,” says Blanco. “In general, consumers are now more aware of how critical landscape architecture is to the success of their projects, and they are open to implementing sustainable strategies, adding green infrastructure, and using native plants. When we started out, it was a struggle even proposing some of [this] to the design team.”

Today, ArquitectonicaGEO is one of the country’s go-to studios for outdoor spaces with wow factors and eco-conscious integrity. Their multipronged philosophy is as forward-thinking as mantras get: Design with connectivity, sustainability, and adaptive landscapes. Explore new ideas and methods through active and inclusive dialogue. Cultivate artistic expression through the seamless fusion of architecture, art, and landscape.

Educate by improving the human experience in public spaces.

“We like projects that are challenging and allow us to experiment with new ideas and methods,” says Spear. “Being able to incorporate our core values in design has allowed us to build a reputation that is specific to our design philosophy.”

Their portfolio speaks for itself, with commissions such as PortMiami, Lakeside Village at the University of Miami, and Canopy Park in Miami Beach. At Brickell City Centre, their Climate Ribbon has become an example to landscape designers around the world. At the Pérez Art Museum Miami, they addressed the global threat of sea level rise through a number of practices.

As for the future? “We started our international expansion in 2022 and opened offices in Malaga, Spain, and Bogota, Colombia,” says Blanco. “We are confident that ... we will be able to establish the firm in new markets that are still behind when it comes to landscape architecture.” (arquitectonicageo.com) «

I

n some ways, Raymond and Eilyn Jimenez are like most married couples. They wake up beside one another, sip coffee together, and vent their frustrations to each other. In their spare time, they try new Miami restaurants, book far-flung vacations, and grapple with the thirtysomething conundrum of figuring out the right time to start a family (with some added pressure from their Dominican- and Cuban-American relatives).

But since Raymond and Eilyn are both sought-after, Miami-based interior designers, they’re also professional rivals—and they’re often competing for the same high-end residential and commercial projects across the Magic City and beyond.

“We’re very competitive and go at it hard,” Raymond, founder and creative director of Raymond Nicholas, says with a sly smile. “We’ll give each other just enough detail of what we’re thinking when it comes to proposals and input from the client just to be nice and cordial.

Besides that, we’re off to the races. But, at

the end of the day, we want one of us to win at least.”

“We draw a lot of inspiration from one another, but we flourish independently,” says Eilyn, who is the founder and creative director of Sire Design studio. “We’re still growing as designers and people.

There’s also the fear that working together will tarnish our relationship, which we place at a higher value.”

The Jimenezes’ marriage is curious and chaotic—so much so that Netflix executives gave them a reality show chronicling their relationship, their creative differences, and their respective interior design firms. The eight-episode season of Designing Miami aired in September 2022 and shared the couple’s professional struggles as Raymond launched his firm and Eilyn managed an all-female team of designers. Personal struggles were fair game, too—from discussions about having children to the process of remodeling their own home in Miami Shores. Now, more than a year since the show debuted,

“We both got a lot of projects as a result of the show,” Eilyn says. “We’ve been very blessed [that] people are resonating with the work we do and what we bring to the table. It brings a sense of comfort because these clients already know our personalities and our work and want to work with us for those reasons.”

Though Raymond and Eilyn’s aesthetics lie at somewhat opposite ends of the minimalist-maximalist design spectrum, the pair both got their start in the same neighborhood in Hialeah. They lived on the same street, attended the same elementary school, and even had some of the same teachers. Since Raymond is a few years older than Eilyn, the pair didn’t meet back then (though they are certain their paths must have crossed multiple times). Instead, a mutual friend introduced them at an Art Basel event in 2016.

Three years later, they were married.

HONING YOUR HOME RAYMOND AND EILYN JIMENEZ SHARE FOUR TIPS FOR FINDING YOUR DESIGN GROOVE Go Fashion-Forward “If you’re not sure what direction design is going, look to fashion,” suggests Eilyn.

Stay Grounded “Natural stone, travertine, wood, metal, and glass are timeless,” Raymond says. “These materials ... will continue to stand the test of time.”

Revisit Retro “Revisit design books from the ’30s, ’40s, ’50s, and ’60s,” Eilyn says. “If you want to see where design is going, look back to architects and designers from the past.”

Incorporate Vintage Vibes “Spaces should have elements that are conversation starters, whether that’s vintage or antique pieces,” Eilyn says. “A good ratio for interiors is 50 percent new, 30 percent vintage, and 20 percent privately owned—investment pieces that can or have been handed down generationally.”

“It’s serendipitous because I used to do ballet and Ray used to work in the store underneath that studio,” Eilyn says. “We only found out years later that we were definitely at the same place at the same time. It was almost like the universe was like, ‘Let’s gather you, fix you, and then make you find each other.’”

Raymond and Eilyn took their own roundabout routes to design, too. Growing up, Raymond knew he wanted to pursue either fashion or architecture. For fun, he’d distress friends’ jeans and paint Hawaiian flowers on school backpacks. (“I should’ve been charging back at that age,” he jokes.) After graduating with a bachelor of fine arts in interior design from the Miami International University of Art & Design in 2010, he co-founded RS3, an interior design and architecture studio.

“Imagine two 23-year-olds starting their own business completely clueless,” Raymond recalls. “When you have to put food on the table, you learn quickly.”

As a kid, Eilyn had always wanted to study law, with the hopes of one day becoming a judge. But during her second year at Universidad Latina de Costa Rica, she switched her major to architecture. Her professors couldn’t help but

comment on the attention Eilyn put into the interiors of her projects. It led to another pivot in her career trajectory.

“At first, I took offense, as if my professors were saying I was a bad architect,” Eilyn says. “But the advice led me toward interior design and I pretty much immediately fell in love with it.”

Starting out, both Raymond and Eilyn say they worked long hours and often compromised their creative visions to appease their clients. “At first, we had to design and cater to the masses so: nice neutrals and tone-on-tone,” Raymond says. “There’s nothing wrong with that, but that’s a more conservative approach.”

“I first started out with Groupon, offering $99 consultations,” Eilyn recalls. “I was driving miles and miles to help somebody pick out a paint color. But if the client wants purple walls with pink polka dots, you’re going to make that purple wall with pink polka dots work. You’re trying to build a portfolio and gather experience.”

As Miami grew in reputation as a global art destination, both designers found themselves poised to experiment creatively. “Miami was very, very white—glossy white floors, some red lacquer—and it was a little bit

tacky,” Eilyn says. “When you think about what Miami design was 10 years ago and what it is today, it’s much more elegant and sophisticated. It’s exciting that we’re at the forefront and participating in making that change.”

It was in the midst of the pandemic that a producer friend of Eilyn’s suggested a TV show. After the pair filmed a reel and pitched the idea, Netflix signed on and began filming in June 2021.

None of the couple’s experiences in interior design could’ve prepared them for eight months of filming. Whereas Raymond never quite felt at ease in front of the cameras, Eilyn was a natural and would sometimes even forget they were there at all.

“I didn’t really get comfortable until the last couple of weeks,” Raymond says. “I’d always be thinking in the back of my head, ‘Don’t do this or don’t do that.’ Still, to this day, I have a hard time watching the show—the sound of my voice, the way I act. I have really only seen the show once.”

“For me, it was really easy because the cameras just became an extension of myself and the crew became my family,” Eilyn says. “We have enough drama going on in construction and in life that was easily seen on TV, so we were able to be really transparent about who and how we really are.”

Fast-forward to 2023 and Raymond’s firm has a wealth of new clients in the pipeline, including luxury construction projects at the Aria Reserve and Missoni Baia in Edgewater. Eilyn is currently juggling 20-or-so projects, some with budgets upwards of $60 million.

The Jimenezes’ Miami Shores home, however, remains one of the plotlines from the show that has yet to be resolved. Most of the construction is complete; windows, electrical, and plumbing are installed, and vintage 1940s beds for the guest room are sitting in Eilyn’s Ironside office. But if Raymond and Eilyn expect to move into their home by the end of the year, they’ll have to marry their distinct design aesthetics into a single creative vision. They’re not worried.

“This is the fun part,” Raymond says. “I’m more on the heavier side and she’s more on the minimalist side, but I think we complement each other and can find a happy medium. We do it with our clients so we should be able to do it ourselves.”

Whether their collaboration hints that the couple may one day join design forces, the pair remains vague. “We’re working on a lot of things that we can’t disclose yet,” Eilyn says. “There’s so much coming and we’re excited for the future.”

“Let’s just say,” Raymond adds, “you’re going to see us on television again.” «

Spanish Succulence

Following more than a decade of rave reviews and top marks on Mexico’s best restaurant lists, Mexico City–based Zeru is expanding its empire internationally, and its first conquest is Miami. While Zeru’s restaurateurs hail from Mexico, the cuisine is in fact Mediterranean-Basque, with an emphasis on seasonal Spanish seafood and the use of a traditional Basque asador (wood-fire grill).

Every dish promises exquisite presentation and a palate-perfect ballet of flavors, textures, and authenticity. Servers and man-

agers deliver each course with a detailed explanation of ingredients, origins, and suggested how-tos for achieving maximum taste sensations.

A recent dinner kicked off with a decadent Ossetra caviar and smoked salmon Barcelona Bikini sandwich emerging from a cloud of smoke. Bluefin tuna tartare with black truffle and saffron was followed by a series of socarrats (think: daintier paellas in which every bite includes the coveted, crispy, caramelized layer typically fixed to the pan’s bottom

and corners), one with organic vegetables and Japanese Kobe, another a squid ink–imbued seafood iteration. Horchata for the Holidays

November signals the start of the festive season. Regardless of whether you deck the halls as soon as you take off your Halloween costume or prefer to celebrate from Thanksgiving onward, we could all use a smooth, creamy, refreshing beverage to mark the occasion.

Originating in North Africa as far back as 2400 B.C. and introduced to Southern Spain by the Moors, horchata was traditionally made from chufa, or tiger nuts. The Spanish brought horchata with them to the Americas, but since tiger nuts were not available, the recipe evolved to use rice instead.

Today, there are as many variations of horchata as there are regions across Latin America. Regardless of the different grains, nuts, and seeds used to prepare it, the beverage remains plant based. This recipe includes a few key ingredients sure to add a little extra chacha to your next horchata.

When Miami natives and art collectors Leslie and David Lefkowitz relocated from San Francisco to the Magic City to enjoy their retirement, they knew the storied Villa Regina high-rise in Brickell was something special. Beyond its views of Biscayne Bay and the financial district, the building also features an exterior mural by Yaacov Agam, an artist whose work the couple had long admired. Paired with the building’s distinct angles and recessed surfaces, the mural creates a kinetic effect that changes constantly depending on one’s viewpoint and the time of day.

Diaz-Velasco says the 2,005-square-foot condominium was “a total gut renovation.” She improved the interior architecture by designing custom millwork, adding dramatic lighting effects, and using repurposed wood flooring to bring a sense of warmth to the space.

One of Diaz-Velasco’s primary goals was to create a fluid connection to nature and natural light. To achieve this, she incorporated a transparent floating bar (engineered to hang from the ceiling) that would not block the condo’s impressive views.

How should the pieces of art that you own speak to you?

When I work with my clients, we get into the details of the artists who are making these works of art. When you learn more about a specific artist—their background, their process—the work speaks to you and becomes much more than just an object on the wall; [it is] a living testimony to the spark of human creativity. This makes the work much deeper and more meaningful to live with.

What should people steer clear of when selecting art?

Azout: In this case, we don’t start with buying [but] rather with looking. If you don’t know what type of art you like or if you have never purchased art, a critical step is to see as much art as possible. This can happen by going to gallery shows, museum exhibitions, or even art fairs. Online platforms like Instagram and Artsy are also great places to look at art.

My clients are truly so different. I can’t say they have any one style or aesthetic in

Should an art purchase work toward building a collection with a general theme, or can each piece function independently?

Ideally when you are building a collection (even a small one), there should be a thread that ties the artworks together. Whether you are focusing on art from a particular region or art that is of a particular media, there should be a story or a link between the works that guides the collection. This also helps focus your future purchasing. It’s nice

to have a framework in which to pursue future acquisitions.

How much should artwork be an asset investment versus an emotional investment?

I believe strongly [that] art should be purchased first and foremost because you feel an affinity toward the artist and the work. It is wonderful to support living artists and sometimes, yes, you do get lucky, and that work appreciates in value over time, but that should not be your primary goal when collecting art.

What is the best way for people to begin learning what type of art they love?

Start by looking. Miami has so many incredible venues to go see art in person. Whether it’s a show at ICA Miami or PAMM, visiting some galleries in Little Haiti, or attending Artists Open, go and experience art in person. The more art you see, the more you can start to fine-tune your art aesthetic. «

Laser Cataract SURGERY

Dr. Mendelsohn is a pioneer of the five-minute laser cataract surgery and recognized by physicians as a preeminent expert in eye laser surgery. Laser cataract surgery provides far better visual results and safety compared to traditional cataract surgery. Nicolle Cure is a Colombian American artist living and working in Aventura. Her abstract paintings explore the relationship between sound and daily life, inspired by her sudden unilateral hearing loss in 2017 and subsequent diagnosis of Meniere’s Syndrome––a vestibular health condition affecting her hearing and balance. Since then, Cure shifted her creative approach and style to illustrate her experience with hearing loss through color and movement. She uses mixed-media techniques incorporating soft washes and mark-making to create fluid, abstract, energetic, yet calming paintings.

Cure’s art has been showcased at Art Basel Miami, Beaux Arts Festival, Showfields, and other international art fairs. Her work has been highlighted and reviewed in various magazines, podcasts, and other media outlets. She has also completed multiple collaborations with renowned brands such as West Elm, Williams Sonoma, Macy’s, the University of Miami, NBC, and The U.S. Humane Society.

Beyond her art practice, Cure is passionate about helping others and raising awareness for causes dear to her heart. In the last seven years, she has partnered with the Hearing Health Foundation and Vestibular Disorders Organization (VeDA), donating her time and art to help their fundraising initiatives. Cure recently won the Art Leadership Scholarship from Americans for the Arts for her work raising awareness about hearing loss and other invisible disabilities.

Cure’s artworks are held in corporate and private collections across the U.S., Europe, South America, and Asia. Interested collectors can acquire her original paintings and prints directly through her website and national and international galleries.
