CAPEHART
Most families have holiday traditions. In our family, we embrace a curious mix of American and Greek Christmas rituals, some traditional and others uniquely ours. For example, we have our 12-year-old twins make something every year; it could be an ornament, a dish for Christmas Eve dinner, or a holiday-inspired work of art. Our cookie baking always includes kourabiethes and melomakarona, in addition to gingerbread men. And we have two gift-giving occasions (our kids are particularly fond of this one): Christmas morning, per our adopted homeland, and on New Year’s Eve, when Saint Basil (the Greek version of Santa Claus) visits. Jenni and Joshua Coba have their own mixed traditions, which they share with their three young children. Since they celebrate Christmas and Hanukkah in their home, Jenni decorates for both holidays using objects she’s been collecting for decades. Not only do the Cobas make the season special for family and friends, they attach a charity to their holiday parties. Read about their joyful celebration in “Heartfelt Holiday” on page 72. This month we also present a special cover story featuring Miami Heat player Tyler Herro. Tyler models looks from the new Louis Vuitton men’s store in the Design District with a swagger and irreverence only a 21-year-old superstar could pull off. Check out his style, and read more about his ambitions, in “Super Herro” on page 56. And because it’s also the season for art, we have compiled a guide to Miami Art Week, which blissfully returns this month after a year’s hibernation. We cover the top art fairs, newest exhibits, and must-visit museums, and present conversations with movers and shakers in the art and design space. If you plan to partake in Art Week, you won’t want to miss “State of the Arts” on page 66. Wishing you a peaceful holiday with family and friends!

ON VIEW Miami Dade College’s flagship museum, The Museum of Art and Design (MOAD), recently reopened its doors following renovations to the Freedom Tower. In line with its “Museum Without Boundaries” initiative, which “encourages interaction and collaboration with local audiences and organizations,” MOAD is presenting three new exhibitions to foster a reimagined Magic City. “For the Time Being” is the firs American museum exhibition of the influential Icelandic artist Hreinn Fridfinnsson. The show highlights his use of minimal gestures to transform everyday materials into elusive and enigmatic artworks. The immersive installation “Mongrel” tells the story of artist Jorge Pardo’s childhood memories as a Cuban-American refugee through a series of 25 quasiabstract drawings, along with modernist chairs, custom-fabricated chandeliers, and a carpet designed by the artist in MOAD’s expansive Skylight Gallery. In “Constructed Color,” Venezuelan-born artist Loriel Beltrán showcases a collection of innovative abstract paintings, made by affixing slabs of layered pigment to panels. Her exhibition kicks off MOAD Projects, a new platform for local artists to realize new projects in addition to research the understudied historical developments in the city’s cultural past. FAENA ART Faena Art will launch “The Project Room” during Miami Art Week, a platform for artists to explore new facets of their practice through a residency program, a series of artist talks, and the fostering of new models for social interaction. The space will debut with Barcelona-based artist Andrés Reisinger in collaboration with Aorist, along with a large-scale immersive artwork by Argentinean artist and creative director Pilar Zeta. (faenaart.org)
THE SAGAMORE HOTEL The Sagamore Hotel will turn its lobby and ground floor into a gallery space featuring works by French Brazilian pop art duo Léo & Steph, Israeli artist Itzik Mevorach, and Italian-born Erika Calesini. The property will also host live art in its sculpture garden and a “Fresh Paint at The Sagamore” immersive multimedia experience. The Sagamore’s twentieth anniversary Art Brunch takes center stage December 4, promising art activations, entertainment, gourmet food, and cocktails. (thesagamore.com)
Art dealer and restaurateur extraordinaire Alvaro Perez Miranda moved to Miami following successful stints in Japan and New York in hopes of integrating his passions for food and art. He made his mark locally by first launching Vagabond Restaurant & Bar with Alex Chang in Miami and later opening Wabi Sabi and Hiyakawa. Last year, the Venezuelan-born entrepreneur converted a 1,000-square-foot space on NE 79th Street into Black Ship Moment, a multimedia collaborative where he displays pieces from his art collection and helps foster artistic careers through rotating monthly exhibits and immersive experiences. (instagram.com/blackshipmoment) —J.A. AVM: What inspired the opening of Black Ship Moment? Perez Miranda: First, my passion for art. I went to art school but never liked what I did and saw the potential of so many talented young artists that needed the push. At the core of the gallery’s direction is to nurture emerging talents that I personally like.

How did you come up with the name of the gallery? I started working with all types of art, and I wanted to combine it with music, food, scent, and architecture for a multisensory experience. Instead of exhibitions, I call these “experiences moments.” Japan is all about that—Ichigo-Ichie—the idea of the unique nature of a moment. What artists should we look out for? Ryota Unno is a Nihonga artist that I love. Nihonga is an ancient Japanese technique that uses crushed natural pigments mixed with rabbit skin glue, painted on washi paper, and mounted on wood.

Insight into how diet can HELP TO RELIEVE stress, anxiety, and depression By Ivey Leidy Photography by Kent Anderson

hether it be pressure in our personal lives or at the office, most of us experience some level of stress. What we may not be aware of is how chronic stress can affect our health. The endocrine system is a complex network of hormone-producing glands and organs that send messages and commands throughout our bodies to carry out vital functions. One of these glands, the adrenal gland, produces the hormone cortisol, which helps to regulate blood sugar, blood
24
PRACTICES TO REDUCE CORTISOL AND STRESS EXERCISE: As little as 20 minutes a day has been proven to lower cortisol levels and increase endorphins, the body’s mood elevators. MEDITATION: This practice imbues a sense of calm that can last throughout the day. GET OUTSIDE: A good dose of vitamin D helps to balance gut bacteria, thereby boosting mood. B VITAMINS: B vitamin deficiencies, especially B6 and B12, have been linked to depression. DIET: An anti-inflammatory diet rich in whole, unprocessed fruits, vegetables, grains, healthy fats, and protein helps to balance hormones and the gut.
pressure, inflammation, and metabolism. Cortisol is also known as the stress hormone because it plays an important role in protecting us from danger. When you encounter a threat—a bear charging you in the woods, for example—your adrenal glands release a surge of adrenaline and cortisol, boosting energy and helping you to flee. Once this danger has passed, the hormones stabilize, blood pressure returns to normal, and the day goes on. But when you are constantly stressed, the body has a hard time deciphering between stimuli. Are you running from a bear or just involved in a heated debate? When stressors are omnipresent, the adrenal glands keep producing cortisol as if an attack is imminent, putting you in chronic fight-or-flight mode leading to various health problems. Signs of high cortisol levels include anxiety, depression, sleep issues, high blood pressure, and sudden weight gain, especially in the abdomen and face. It can also lead to digestive problems, as cortisol curbs digestion in order to conserve the energy needed to fight off danger (that darn bear, again). As humans, we tend to gravitate toward sweets to lift our mood, but refined carbohydrates and simple sugars only make things worse. Refine sugars and processed foods cause a temporary dopamine spike that is followed by a subsequent crash, resulting in a chemical imbalance in the brain. A diet high in refined sugars also increases inflammation throughout your body and gut, which can lead to mood disorders, anxiety, and even depression. Artificial sugars can also cause imbalances in gut bacteria and interfere with serotonin production. And inflammatory oils (such as corn, soybean, and canola) can create inflammation in the gut. Thankfully, there is an array of foods that can elevate your mood when incorporated into a healthy diet. Read on to learn more.

Add spinach and edamame and let cook for 3 minutes, stirring frequently. Add lemon juice and coconut aminos and stir to incorporate. Transfer spinach and edamame to plates and top with scallops. Garnish with sesame seeds and chopped green onions.

RED ALERT Loubiworld Miniature seven-piece fragrance set ($300), Christian Louboutin, saks.com Life is too short to commit to just one fragrance. A better plan is to go on a fragrance “journey” with shoe maestro Christian Louboutin. The designer’s Loubiworld Miniature unisex fragrances span the spectrum from seductive (Loubicroc) to whimsical (Loubidoo). The seven scents are presented in a box that recalls Louboutin’s signature red soles. —Daphne Nikolopoulos, editor in chief

THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT!
Dinner For DOZENS Tips for organizing a meaningful, stress-free GROUP GATHERING By Steven Stolman | Photography by Rob Rich Clockwise from above: A transformed barn is an ideal venue; Prosecco pours welcome guests; takeaway market corn puddings served in the host’s own white ceramic lasagna pans.

What do you do when the guest list grows beyond the confines of your home? The answer is to think outside the box—or, as was the case for this simple but heartfelt dinner for 50, inside the barn. Indeed, sometimes the most unlikely settings can inspire the most delightful gatherings, without breaking the bank. While many shudder at the idea of hosting hoards for dinner, there are times when it’s required; think rehearsal dinners or milestone birthdays and anniversaries. But there are also folks blessed with so many friends who all know each other that entertaining everyone in one fell swoop is a total joy. In the iconic film The Wizard of Oz, the Tin Man is told: “A heart is not judged by how much you love, but by how much you are loved by others.” For those who are loved by lots, a big gathering can be a wonderful way to return all that affection. For this late-summer dinner, the venue was a soaring barn on the grounds of the Southampton History Museum, on the east end of Long Island. Little had to be done in the way of decor beyond going with the flow: rented country-casual blue gingham tablecloths and matching

napkins, plus candlelit lanterns brought from home. The florals were inexpensive pots of seasonal flower purchased that morning from a local supermarket. Any big-box building supply store with a garden center would offer the same selection. The key is to think local. If you’re doing this in South Florida, chrysanthemums would look silly, but bougainvillea, hibiscus, or orchids would be lovely, and they can go home with you afterwards. Don’t have access to a barn? Maybe it’s a tiki hut, slat house, or party tent (the most trusted inclementweather insurance policy). The menu for this dinner could not have been easier or better received. It began with pigs in blankets with mustard (a surefire crowdpleaser), followed by a buffet of crispy fried chicken, St. Louis–style barbecue ribs, hearty corn pudding, and grilled seasonal vegetables. In lieu of a caterer, I ordered takeaway from a market in advance. The chicken and ribs came in foil containers for easy reheating and transferral into my serving pieces. A few days before the dinner, I brought my own white ceramic lasagna pans to the market for the corn puddings. The desserts came from a much-loved local bakery famous for its lemon squares, raspberry crumble bars, and blondies, all cut into bitesize pieces and served on tiered étagères procured from the same party rental company that provided the tables, chairs, linens, dinnerware, flatware, and glassware. If rentals are budget busters, there are plenty of stylish disposables on the market—chic plastic stemless wine glasses and bamboo plates and flatware are all available online. However, I draw the line at paper dinner napkins. Buy a bunch of inexpensive cloth ones instead. You’ll use them again. The key to pulling this whole shebang off can be summed up in one word: staffing. I was fortunate enough to have been made aware of a crackerjack team of local guys and gals who handled the setup, tended
000_ENTERTAINMENT_AVM_1221.indd 37
the bar, warmed and plated the food in an adjacent kitchen, circulated throughout the evening pouring wine and clearing glasses and plates, and, best of all, cleaned the whole thing up, returning the venue in better shape than before. If there’s one aspect of entertaining where one should never skimp, it’s staffing. The last thing a host wants is to be left with an unwieldy mess after the last guest has departed, or worse, having to fill in as an extra bartender or busboy. It’s a lot more meaningful to mingle with your guests in a relaxed, gracious manner. Since most of us haven’t gathered in groups for what feels like an eternity, now that things are (hopefully) looking up, don’t be shy. Hosting a big shindig doesn’t have to be expensive or backbreaking. Just keep it simple, serve generous amounts of food and drink that you love, have lots of help, and enjoy the experience. « DECEMBER 2021

Rwanda’s Rebirth
Majestic mountain gorillas, new ultra-luxe safari lodges, and a triumphant return of the Big Five—Rwanda is trending as Africa’s latest safari hot spot By Paul Rubio

y heart pounds and my legs shake as I scramble up a muddy, 65-degree slope in the thick of Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. It’s been an arduous three-hour ascent through mist-shrouded forest, blanketed in stinging nettles and prickly thistle plants, but the reward is near. I am just minutes away from consummating a wildlife lover’s ultimate dream: face time with the critically endangered mountain gorilla. The excitement is palpable. I’m glued to my guide, Jolie, as something scurries through near-impenetrable thickets above. Our tracker machetes a narrow path forward and six members of the Agashya family come into view. Jolie vocalizes a series of guttural groans, informing the gorilla troop that we come in peace. Within seconds, the dominant silverback—one of three silverbacks in this family of

21—decides to investigate our presence. He comes as close as inches away, literally breathing down our necks. It’s at once scary, surreal, exhilarating, beautiful, and inspiring. I’ve never felt more alive. Soon enough, the silverback returns to the other gorillas, and we officially commence our single precious hour observing the family, a time limit set by the Rwandan government to minimize human-gorilla interactions. In that hour, I forge a lifetime of memories, enamored by young blackbacks wrestling and tumbling down the slopes, elders foraging for food, and an inquisitive newborn sneaking a glimpse of the commotion from his mother’s clutch. I watch my greatest Planet Earth fantasies unfold in real time—and this live show doesn’t disappoint. The following day brings a search for the Amahoro family, another of Rwanda’s 20 known gorilla troops, through the jungled thicket of northern Rwanda’s volcanoes. The physical journey to reach them is less difficult than the previous one, but the emotional journey is equally poignant. As recently as a few years ago, such epic gorilla experiences were the extent of Rwanda’s safari footprint. But so much has changed in so little time. In the last decade, the “Land of a Thousand Hills” has risen above a rocky past to become the African continent’s biggest success story in terms of safety, economic growth, and as an exemplar of wildlife tourism and conservation. Case in point: I’m on a two-week custom Rwanda safari with outfitter Micato Safaris (micato.com), often named the world’s top safari company. My national itinerary includes not only gorilla trekking but also chimpanzee trekking, a Big Five safari, and luxuriating in some of the newest—and best—lodges on the entire African safari circuit. Prior to arriving in Volcanoes National Park, I had basked in the glory of Rwanda’s secret, enchanted forest: Nyungwe. Following my mandatory one-day quarantine in the capital city of Kigali, Micato arranged a helicopter transfer to western Rwanda and a stay at the One&Only Nyungwe House (oneandonly resorts.com), a stunning 22-room

of the national park, strewn with 21 freestanding lodges and suites. Each unit is a masterpiece in transitional indoor-outdoor design, framed in elaborate woodwork and adorned in modernist furnishings and patterned soft goods that define African chic. Winding pathways lead to a boutique spa, multiple restaurants, and experiential venues, including the past residence of famed wildlife expert Jack Hanna and a boma used for dance performances. On the opposite end of the national park, the eightsuite Singita Kwitonda Lodge also wows as a series of minimalist, jewel box–like sanctuaries, hewn from volcanic rock, river stone, handmade ceramic tiles, and oven-red clay bricks made by surrounding communities. Suites and common areas maximize volcano views through wide glass expanses and exude romance in the mist thanks to private heated plunge pools, outdoor fir places, and cozy nooks (don’t miss sampling a few glasses of South African reds in the wine cellar). Singita’s vegetable garden yields pristine ingredients that the lodge’s chefs theatrically prepare in an interactive kitchen. While

property set within a working tea plantation at the edge of Nyungwe National Park. Here, the search for smaller primates headlines the daily agenda thanks to an impressive 13 species, including Earth’s largest troop of Angolan black-and-white colobus monkeys (more than 500 strong), thriving populations of L’Hoest’s monkeys, and two families of chimpanzees. There’s also exceptional birdwatching, with more than 300 species represented, including 28 endemics like the red-collared mountain-babbler and the breathtaking Rwenzori turaco. More than action-packed wildlife spotting, One&Only Nyungwe House promises an exotic African escape steeped in wellness, culture, and style. The infinity pool, spa, and dining areas are positioned such that the sights and sounds of towering forests and undulating tea hedges continuously feed the soul. Stilted, tree-top guest rooms and suites house outdoor salas, idyllic for pairing jungle immersion with morning coffee and evening wine. Interiors reflect Rwandan charm, underscored by grand displays of agaseke (traditional Rwandese basket work) and imigongo (a geometric art form exclusive to Rwanda). From Nyungwe, I venture north to Volcanoes National Park alongside my personal Micato driver and safari director—such personnel plus a private 4x4 are standard on a Custom Micato Safari—and begin an extended stay in prime gorilla real estate, splitting my time between One&Only Gorilla’s Nest (oneandonlyresorts.com) and Singita Kwitonda Lodge (singita.com). Gorilla’s Nest is arguably One&Only’s most luxurious (and priciest) property to date, a 35-acre garden oasis near the foothills

gorilla trekking initially anchored my stays at both properties, each merits classification as a restorative nature retreat, not just a posh base for bucket-list wildlife outings. Riding high from epic primate trekking and unparalleled pampering, I round out my Micato Rwanda journey by heading east to Akagera National Park, near the border with Tanzania. Much of the 433-square-mile park was destroyed during and after the civil war in the 1990s, but by 2010 the Rwanda Development Board and the African Parks Network were rehabilitating the land and restoring Central Africa’s largest protected wetland to its former splendor. With the 2017 reintroduction of the black rhino, Akagera officially regained Big Five status. Nowadays, it’s entirely possible to enjoy a quintessential East Africa safari and witness the fruits of conservation in action at Magashi, a haute tented camp by Wilderness Safaris (wilderness-safaris. com). such as hippos, crocs, and fish eagles along with savannah superstars like elephants, lions, and leopards, which have adapted to a diet of catfish from Lake Rwanyakazinga as a main source of protein. Notwithstanding the country’s new identity, mountain gorillas—and our intrinsic desire to observe them—will continue to anchor safaris in
Rwanda. This up-close wildlife encounter truly merits labels like “life changing” and “once in a lifetime.” However, new itineraries by the likes of Micato Safaris, primate walking safaris in the west, and classic savannah experiences in the east—complemented by a boom in ultra-luxury lodging—collectively showcase Rwanda’s rebirth into today’s ultimate safari destination. «

HIGH ROAD
AIR FORCE Capable of gliding up to 520 miles on a single charge, the 2022 Lucid Air is a true game changer By Howard Walker I’ve gazed at the future of four-wheeled luxury, and it’s got a plug attached. Right around now, Lucid Motors out in Casa Grande, Arizona, is ramping up production of its groundbreaking all-electric Lucid Air fourdoor luxury sedan. You might have seen the headlines. The flagship Air Dream Performance Edition will deliver a staggering 1,100 horsepower. That’s enough to catapult it from standstill to 60 mph in an eyewatering, heart-palpitating 2.5 seconds. That’s not just supercar fast, it’s hypercar fast. Yet, take the long and winding road to grandma’s house and the battery will give a real-world, EPA-approved, best-in-the-industry range of 520 miles. That’s LA to San Fran on a sin-
gle charge. Range anxiety? What range anxiety? While this highfalutin halo model stickers at $170,500—the initial run of 520 sold out faster than tickets to an Ariana Grande concert—there are plenty more affordable, less acceleratively unnerving versions to choose from. Take, for example, last year’s starter Lucid, the Air Pure, which boasts 480 horses, a still-impressive 406mile range, and a price tag of $78,900. That’s a nontrivial $12 grand less than the equivalent Tesla Model S, or more than $23,000 less than the brand-new electric Mercedes EQS, which has a range of 350 miles—almost 60 less than the Lucid. This is all in addition to Lucid’s staggering ability to fast charge. Plug it in and you can add up to 300 miles of battery in 20 minutes. In a se-
rious rush to pick up the kids? Just 60 seconds of 350-volt, fast-charger juice can deliver 20 miles of range. What this carmaker has produced with its Lucid Air is the luxury sedan of the future. See it in the metal or, in my case, on the floor at the Lucid Studio showroom in West Palm Beach, and you can’t help but be impressed. Size-wise, the Air is almost a perfect match

with its ace rivals, the Tesla Model S and Porsche’s dynamic Taycan. Yes, that barof-Dove-shaped body could have been a little edgier or more visually dramatic. But gaze at it in profile and savor that low, arching roofline, the pinched waist, and those muscular haunches over the wheels. The contrasting roof frame color makes all the difference. It comes with some impressive design features too. The stunning glass roof is more like a canopy on a fighter jet, with the windshield flowing seamlessly to a roll-over beam behind the driver’s head. Then it’s glass all the way back to the rear deck. While there’s no built-in sunshade or Mercedes-style electrochromic darkening, I’m told the glass has a special coating to reduce heat and soften sunlight—pretty essential here in the Sunshine State. The choice of interior materials is first-class, with lots of openpore wood, glove-soft napa leather, satin metal, and even a linenlike fabric made out of recycled plastic bottles. No, it doesn’t have the mile-wide glass screens you get in Mercedes’ new EQS. But the 34-inch 5K display curves beautifully in front of the driver and has crystal-clear graphics. This roomy sedan comes with stretch-out space in the back and the option of rear seats that individually recline. It’s practical too, with that high-lifting, low-load-height trunk lid revealing a two-level area with more than 26 cubic feet of room for luggage. And don’t forget there’s 9.9 cubic feet in the front trunk as well. Lucid plans to build fewer than 600 cars this year, stepping up to 20,000 in 2022. That being said, I’m expecting the Lucid brand won’t really take off until it rolls out its highly anticipated Gravity electric SUV, which is due to arrive in the second half of 2023. Tesla should be scared. Very scared. «

Exploring the OUTBACK
Outback Yachts’ new Outback 50 blends trawler style with cruiser performance—and it comes with a wonderful back deck By Howard Walker Andrew Cilla knows boats. For 40 or so years he headed up Fort Lauderdale–based top yacht brokerage Luke Brown Yachts. And full disclosure here, I came this close to buying a 55-foot Fleming trawler he had listed back in 2011. So, when Cilla decided the time had come to sail off into the sunset, he knew exactly what he wanted in the boat of his dreams. It would need to be in the 50-to-60-foot range. It had to be fast, but not too fast, with a 20-knot top speed. It should have trawler-style lines and be comfortable, economical, and easy to maintain. And it needed to have great outdoor space, with a big back deck for lounging. With the help of acclaimed Sarasota marine architect Michael Peters and John Olson, president of West Coast–based Offshore Yachts, Cilla
designed and built his dream yacht, named it the Outback 50, and launched the first example— for himself—at the end of 2019. What did he do once he’d obtained the keys? He cleared his desk at Luke Brown, packed a bag, threw the lines from his slip at the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, and set off on a sixmonth “escape” cruise, all the way up to Northeast Harbor in Maine. Since Cilla’s cruise north, the highly respected Kha Shing Shipyard in Taiwan has built another three Outbacks, each with a base price of around $1,380,000. But what’s with that Outback name? It comes from the yacht’s 16-foot-long shaded rear deck and Cilla’s passion for heading “out back” to the deck for a little R&R. And this is arguably the

yacht’s best feature in what is a multitude of best features. It offers space for a large dining table, a couple of Jet Skis, a small flotilla of kayaks, or a collection of loungers for just kicking back and taking in the view. Cilla’s other key requirement was that the rear deck be open at the stern. While there’s a folding stainless rail across the back for safety, it can be removed to open the cockpit up to the swim platform and the water. Fold back the huge glass doors between the cockpit and saloon, and the largely uninterrupted space flows from the helm station all the way to the stern. Below decks there’s a comfy master cabin in the bow and a twin-bed guest cabin, though only one head and shower, so it will work well for a cruising couple with a kid or two. Up in the salon there’s a nicely equipped galley alongside the helm station, which has its own sliding side door for access to the decks. A small sofa and a mirror-varnished fold-out table are ideal for indoor dining, while a levitating

TV takes care of movie nights. The interior of the boat is pretty narrow—the yacht’s overall beam is just 15 feet, 6 inches—but that’s how Cilla envisaged the 50, with a slender hull for economical performance and easy marina docking. Climb the cockpit steps up to the flybridge and, again, the space is huge. There’s room for a 10-foot inflatable boat with a crane for raising and lowering. Forward there’s a central helm, with a first-mate seat alongside and an L-shaped
sofa behind. From up here, the 360-degree visibility is outstanding. Standard power comes from a pair of fuelsipping 320-horse Volvo D4s with shaft drive, though the optional 425-hp Cummins, similar to those fitted to Cilla’s 50, are the ones to have, providing 18-to-20-knot cruising and 24 flat out. Throttle back to a lazy 8-knot trawler speed, and the 550-gallon tanks should take you more than 1,000 miles. The Outback 50 is a great looking, thoroughly well-planned, and swift trawler. For the Florida cruising lifestyle, it’s just about perfect. «

Tyler Herro hates false narratives. And the main one that has plagued the 21-year-old Miami Heat guard since his breakout rookie season in 2019 is that he spends more time partying than he does on his game. Social media is partially to blame for that. One picture of him at a Jack Harlow concert and you’d think that all he does is spend his days seeing the rapper perform his song “Tyler Herro.” Forget the hours of practice Herro had put in prior to that concert—and now that he’s a father, the sleepless nights and diaper changes that are all part of early parenthood. Forget that he runs youth basketball camps, has given out backpacks to underprivileged schoolchildren in the Miami area, and showed up with teammates and coaches after the Surfside condominium collapse to hand out food and water to first responders. Some people just seem to fixate on him being a flashy manabout-town. Herro has grown up a lot over the past three years—and quickly too, because the NBA doesn’t care how young you are or how good you were in college. It expects you to play hard and put on a show just like the veterans do. And as Herro enters his third year of play, he’s eager to prove that his first year was no fluke. In the off-season, he gained 10 pounds of muscle and worked with one of the league’s premier trainers in hopes of helping the Heat make another playoff run. “I’m trying to prove myself,” Herro says. “It’s my third year in the NBA and I really want to show people what I can do.” At press time, Herro’s work seems to have paid off. He scored at least 24 points in four of the five preseason games in which he played, and led the league in scoring for that period with 112 points. Granted, it’s not the regular season, but it is a sign of what fans might see from Herro and the Heat.

“
WHETHER I’M STARTING OR COMING OFF THE BENCH, I WANT TO HELP THIS TEAM GET TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP.” “You can expect a very good team this year,” Herro says. “We’ll be one of the best teams in the league for sure. We have a chip on our shoulders, and we’re trying to prove ourselves. Whether I’m starting or coming off the bench, I want to help this team get to the championship.” For Herro, moments like this are something he dreamed about when he was growing up in suburban Milwaukee. As a third grader, he was focused on playing in the NBA, and stories abound about him as a scrawny little boy who never backed down from a challenge on the court. He grew (as did his legend) and eventually the number of haters determined to see him fail did too. People turned on him when, as a high school player, he opted to play for the University of Kentucky instead of going with a Wisconsin program. He got death threats. People called him a traitor and a snake. Some even threw toy snakes at him as he played. But he played on. “It’s hard for me to understand why people hate Tyler,” says Travis Riesop, his high school coach. “Maybe the way he carries himself makes him seem cocky and that rubs people the wrong way. Maybe it’s because he’s a good-looking guy and people are envious.” The hate seemed to motivate Herro to play even harder and better until he left for his lone year as a Kentucky Wildcat in Lexington, where opposing fans booed him even more. They booed him because there was no denying how good he was—and because he was good, he wound up in the NBA at age 19, playing in Miami, where the expectations are high and the temptations are plentiful for any young person with a newly flush bank account. In that first year, he soared, but in his second, he came down to earth. The fans—his own—turned on him and tweeted at him to hit the gym. Frustrated, Herro sought out super-trainer Drew Hanlen of Pure Sweat Basketball. Among other things, Hanlen worked with Herro on his

jump shot mechanics and on creating more scoring opportunities. Part of that involved tweaks to Herro’s footwork, shiftiness, and pace. So far, Hanlen says he’s seeing good results. “You hear stories about Tyler being Mr. Miami, but the truth is all summer long all he cared about was improving his craft,” Hanlen says. “He would spend hours every day watching film and would come in two hours early just to watch Brad Beal [of the Washington Wizards] work out because he is mimicking some of the things he does. That just shows you the level of humility he has and how much he craves improvement.” Mindset helps. In a preseason game against the Charlotte Hornets, Herro had an off-night, scoring just seven points. But Hanlen says he kept playing hard and finding ways to contribute to the Heat’s 104-103 win. “I don’t think people recognize how much the mental side of the game matters,” Hanlen says. “Building up his confidence was something that will allow Tyler to take a big leap forward. He really worked his ass off to become different, not just look different.” Right now, Herro’s confidence is sky high. In the preseason, he says, once again, that he’s set on being an All-Star—and that he’s determined to do what it takes to get there. “I feel like I’m in the same conversation as the young guys coming up in the league who can be All-Stars, superstars one day…,” he told Bally Sports. “I feel like my name should be in that category too. I put the work in and I’m just continuing to get better every single day.” Twitter erupted as soon as these words came out of Herro’s mouth, with people calling him everything from “drunk” to “not even in the same league” as some of the players he mentioned. But who could fault a young man who single-mindedly pursued his childhood dream, accomplished it, and continues to set the bar higher for himself? Love him or hate him, Tyler Herro keeps pushing himself and those around him. If you’re a Heat fan, you know by now that Tyler Herro talks his talk. But he can back it up. It’s what makes him one of the most exciting players in the league—and it’s a big part of what he hopes will make the Heat a serious contender for this year’s NBA championship. «

Arts State of the
AFTER MOSTLY TAKING A YEAR OFF, MIAMI ART WEEK RETURNS WITH A FULL LINEUP OF CAN’T-MISS EVENTS AND WORLD-CLASS SHOWS BY ERIC BARTON
W
hen the international art fair known as Art Basel first arrived in Miami, it had a rough start. Scheduled for
2001, the tragic events of September 11 forced a year
delay. Perhaps some would have thought that beginning to be a
bad omen. But organizers refocused on a 2002 opening, putting two solid years into the planning.
That first Miami edition of Art Basel attracted 160 galleries
from across the globe and 30,000 attendees. It spawned several
satellite fairs, drew attention to local galleries and collectors, and 66

invigorated the art scene throughout South Florida, helping to bolster Wynwood and the Design District. Nearly two decades later, Art Basel has spawned the more broader Art Week, with events and shows spread across the region. Art Week is perhaps Miami’s most significant cultural event, and despite a necessary cancellation last year, it returns
for what organizers hope is the kind of comeback we saw way back when it all began. The lineup can be overwhelming, but we’ve boiled it down to the must-attend fairs and can’t-miss highlights at Art Week 2021.
Art Basel
The single biggest show during Art Week returns with slightly curtailed public participation. Art Basel reportedly adds a halfbillion to the local economy, but perhaps more significantly, it has led to satellite fairs, nighttime events, and shows throughout South Florida. For the main Art Basel event at the Miami Beach Convention Center, the public will gain access December 2-4, while private exhibitions will open November 29 through December 1. Those entering must show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test and wear a mask. For those not ready to return to in-person events, Art Basel will also offer an online viewing room and livestreamed conversations, among other programming, as part of the digital initiative Art Basel Live. The event itself will boast more than 250 participating galleries spread across its sectors, including the return of the Meridians sector featuring large-scale works curated by Magalí Arriola of Museo Tamayo. Design Miami/
While much of Art Week’s fairs focus on the traditional forms of visual art, Design Miami/ takes a different spin, showing off what’s new and newly classic in interior design. Attendees will find everything from chairs to sculptures—some practical and others that prioritize form over function—all meant to dress up the modern home. Scope
If it wasn’t for Art Basel and everything else happening during Art Week, Scope would be a huge draw on its own. Hitting the 20-year mark in Miami, Scope sets South Beach, leading into a massive gallery stretching out along the seaside. Inside, some 140 international exhibitors await. There’s also a slate of presentations and panels, live music nightly, and a massive video screen outside showing multimedia presentations. It’s 68

We painted ornaments, decorated trees, and re-created her family traditions. It is important for me to continue those traditions with my own family.” Josh was born and raised in North Miami Beach (now Aventura) and remembers the first night of Hanukkah festivities, when his parents would invite their friends over for a celebratory dinner. “Although we didn’t decorate for Hanukkah, I remember the adults’ and kids’ tables were separate, and we had lots to eat,” he says. Josh says celebrating the holidays with Jenni and their children is extra special. “It wasn’t until I married Jenni and she made it different for me that I began to like the season,” says Josh. “I love it now. Every aspect is incredible, o say the holiday season is infectious in Jenni and Joshua Coba’s Williams Island home is an understatement. Jenni’s love of entertaining and her inclusive way of decorating for her husband and their three children, Emery, 6; Ellis, 3; and Wesley, 1, could exhaust even the most overzealous Pinterest mom. “Since Josh is Jewish, I decorate for Hanukkah and Christmas so the children will be able to experience both holidays in our home,” says Jenni. “I love it and cling to traditions.” Born in Miami and raised in Lake Wales (where the Cobas now own a weekend home) Jenni learned how to decorate and celebrate from her late mother. “While I was growing up, the holidays were important to my mom,” she says. “I helped her cook and set the table. 74

especially experiencing it with our children. My kids bring me great joy.” After an early exit from college to join his father’s salon business, Josh is now a stay-at-home dad. He retired four years ago from European Wax Center, which he cofounded with his brother, David, in 2004. They began franchising in 2008, and the business is now a publicly traded chain of more than 850 hair removal and skin care salons in 44 states. causes that are important to her and to Josh. In addition to sitting on the advisory board of The Little Lighthouse Foundation—a nonprofit that helps underserved children and their families in South Florida—Jenni is this season’s co-chair of the Vizcaya Ball. She is also involved with Adopt a Family Miami (which was created during the pandemic) and she serves as a godparent for JAFCO, an organization that cares for abused and neglected children and those living with disabilities. “Fashion Gives Back” to benefit the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, and they are members of Miracle Society under the Big Brothers and Big Sisters umbrella. “While we entertain often in addition to the December season—we have 100 people for Valentine’s Day—we always like to attach a charity to our parties,” Jenni says. “For the past 30 years, when I see great decorations, I buy them and use later. I have four storage units filled with my decor. I even own a ferris wheel and a flower cart.” Those decorations have been put to good use at the Coba house this holiday season. In the dining alcove off the living room, Jenni created a blue, silver, and gold Hanukkah scene set against a solid white backdrop. With a pair of white and gold trees behind, and a mirrored side buffet showcasing a blue menorah with lots of white candles in varying heights, the round cir76

cular dining tablescape was a standout. “My theme for the dining room is Hanukkah,” says Jenni. “I love to add extra touches and small details, so I stayed up all night doing the place settings and centerpiece because I always want the kids to have an amazing experience.” Each place setting dazzled with a gold charger, white china with gold rim topped with a smaller blue print plate, and a star ornament (all from Pottery Barn). Alongside, Jenni placed blue flutes and blue water glasses from William Sonoma, gold fla ware from Anthropology, and dreidels from Pottery Barn. “I love to mix and match because I go for a beautiful end result,” she says. “I buy whatever I like from anywhere I see it.” Nearby, the decor in the all-white living room wa punctuated with a pair of sparkly white, gold, and silver Christmas trees adorned with ornaments fashioned from family photos, silver baby shoes, travel memories, the couple’s wedding cake, and other personal moments. Beneath the trees, gold and white wrapped gifts matched the overall color theme.

“I want our kids to remember our lives together,” Jenni says. “I even have a Santa come on Christmas Eve to read to the kids and give them a toy. We have a hot chocolate bar and we show holiday movies at the pool. When the kids grow up, they will love both Christmas and Hanukkah.” Jenni’s decor provides more than just a happy holiday home—it also serves as a chic backdrop for Little Lighthouse Foundation’s Holiday Toy and Meal Distribution, which was held on the home’s back terrace overlooking an inlet. 78
Outdoors, decorations included large gold and silver balls, tall white tables with small white and gold Christmas trees, and plenty of white candles and lights aglow. As guests arrived, they enjoyed the signature welcome drink of the evening: a vodka lemon martini. Jenni opted for passed appetizers and small plates instead of a large sit-down dinner because she likes to foster a sense of community. “I want guests to mingle, so I keep everyone hopping around, and I picked food that is beautiful and delicious not necessarily significant to the holidays,” she says. Created by Style Catering made such appetizers as coconutcrusted shrimp with pineapple chili drizzle; tiny tuna tacos with crispy wonton shells, citrus soy, and avocado; lobster pot stickers with white soy, shiitakes, and green onion; mini cheeseburger sliders; foie gras crostinis with orange marmalade and Hawaiian sea salt; four-cheese quesadillas with chipotle creme; wild mushroom tartlets with goat cheese and chives; crisp vegetable summer rolls with avocado, mango, tamarind, soy, and ginger; blistered shishito peppers with ponzu; and vegan falafel with cucumber yogurt. Small passed plates included vegan Greek salad, black truffle short ribs with wild mushroom risotto; vegan crispy stuffed squash blossom; pressed Cuban sandwiches with roast pork, ham, and swiss cheese; parmesan truffle fry baskets; and crispy chicken and waffle skillets with Tabasco. tartlets, fresh fruit skewers with honey yogurt, and warm mini doughnuts made of red velvet, cinnamon sugar, and powdered sugar. By the end of the evening—which raised over $100,000 for the Little Lighthouse Foundation—guests were serenaded off by a surprise group of festive carolers. “I am not easily impressed, but Jenni checks off every box,” says guest Lauren Nepo. “Everything she does comes together seamlessly—the decor, the entertainment, the vibe. It is beyond perfection, something out of a fairy tale. She transformed the inside and outside of her home into a winter wonderland maintaining a perfect balance of elegant and festive, honoring tradition in beautiful ways yet always keeping the mood relaxed and jovial.”«

GOURMAND Q&A
Swiss chocolatier Läderach is spreading its sweet love across Florida, and we couldn’t be more excited. The family-owned Swiss chocolate company, acclaimed for its dedication to quality and excellence since 1962, has embarked on an ambitious brick-and-mortar expansion throughout America. Since debuting in Aventura Mall in June, the brand has opened eight more outposts in the Sunshine State. Aventura spoke with the third-generation talent behind the brand, Elias Läderach, who also happens to be the official reigning World Chocolate Master. Here, he shares everything you need to know about the Swiss bliss currently overtaking Florida. (laderach.com) —P.R. Inset and below: FrischSchoggi nut and fruit bundles Masters Collection
AVM: How do you maintain the standard of excellence for Läderach chocolate? Läderach: We are involved in every stage of the product process, from farming to the finished product. Across the world, we know the very farmers who are growing our cacao beans. In Ghana, for example, we employ four entire villages to grow our beans. After harvesting and drying, the beans arrive in sacks at our factory in Bilten, Switzerland, where we create our chocolate. Our 100 varieties of chocolate and other items are then finalized in our second factory, packaged, and shipped to our 100-plus retail stores worldwide. What makes Läderach chocolate so good? Of course, our recipes are key but so are the quality of our ingredients and the freshness of our chocolate. We even strive for greatness within our secondary products. For example, we use hazelnuts only from Piedmont, Italy, which we consider the best of the best. As the reigning World Chocolate Master, could you tell us if there’s a proper methodology for 88
appreciating or evaluating chocolate? The best way is to approach it with all five senses. Start by eating with your eyes. Ask yourself, “How does it look?” Second, investigate how it feels. A good chocolate should be between soft and hard to the touch and shouldn’t melt too fast. Next, listen to the chocolate. It should create a crisp snap when broken apart. Then, smell the chocolate. A strong aroma is a sign of freshness. Finally, taste it and think about the different flavors as they hit your palate. How have you merged your family business with your title as World Chocolate Master? As part of the competition among the world’s top chocolatiers, we must complete several challeng-

es, including creating our own pralines (bonbons) and chocolate bars (tablets). I decided to offer two of my winning recipes as an in-store exclusive called the “Masters Collection.” This box carries six chocolate bonbons, layered with mandarin coulis, milk and chocolate ganache, and a crunchy finish, and a dark chocolate Or Noir Tablet, laced with a caramel and tropical fruit filling. With so much shopping online these days, what is a highlight of enjoying an in-store experience? Each store has a dedicated FrischSchoggi counter, where extra-large tablets of fresh chocolate are displayed with fillings like nuts and berries folded in. Shoppers can get a piece of fresh chocolate bark, big or small, choosing from over 20 varieties at the counter. What’s your favorite Läderach treat? It depends on my mood. When I travel and miss home, I’m craving FrischSchoggi Hazelnut Milk. But when I am home, I crave complexity and go for the single-origin dark chocolates, specifically the 64 percent Madagascar. I love fruit notes in chocolate, and this one has so many nuances of fruitiness. What are some items to look forward to this holiday season? We always have seasonal items in our stores. For the holidays, expect limited-time flavors like FrischSchoggi Gingerbread Milk as well as a limited-edition FrischSchoggi advent calendar.

Telavivian Temptations It’s typically all about flash and cash on South Beach, yet an adorable, whitewashed cottage, brimming with thoughtful cuisine and vacant of pretension, is making waves as the beach’s latest hotspot. Say hello to Abbalé Telavivian Kitchen, an intimate, indoor/outdoor restaurant fashioned after the cozy, comfortable, and cool all-day cafés prolific in Israel’s most famous seaside metropolis. The 50-seat concept by James Beard Award semifinalist Sam Gorenstein and Israeli entrepreneur Omer Horev (of Pura Vida Miami fame) entices with conversation-worthy cuisine, darling pink-and-green garden decor, and a surprisingly affordable price point. For the full Abbalé food experience, a party of two can order five to seven nishnushim (snacks) and salatim (spreads) with fire-baked pita, and then share a larger fire-roasted plate, charred in an open flame at 700 degrees. For starters, don’t miss the fire-roasted onion tahini, baba ganoush, falafel, and roasted beets with pistachio, tahini, urfa pepper, and smoked sea salt. As for the mains, consider the shawarma-spiced American Wagyu steak, the sumac chicken shashlik, or the Moroccan-spiced local fish and engage in a multisensory, epicurean journey that begins in Israel and dabbles in other beloved flavors from across the Mediterranean. A long-standing symbol of abundance and fertility, figs are often gifted, shared, and enjoyed during the holidays. may help manage blood sugar. The sweet fig can be enjoyed raw or cooked and is often dried and preserved to savor all year round. With so much deep-rooted history, what better way to welcome the holidays than with a tipple celebrating the cherished fig? Indulgent Imbibing Raise a glass to revelry with HIGH-END wines and spirits
ROBERT HOLMES

The holidays seem to demand indulgence—if not now, when? Looking back on the last year, these are the bottles I would reach for without hesitation.
CHAMPAGNE: The 2018 Cristal from Louis Roederer ($290) is still widely available, and it’s a beauty. It exhibits tropical hints and flavors of lime, vanilla, tart green apple, and red fruits. This Champagne makes an aggressive statement on the palate and can easily be matched with main courses of poultry, veal, or seafood in generous sauces. (louis-roederer.com) If you’re looking for an exercise in hedonism, try the 2007 Cuvée Nicolas François ($175), the luxury cuvée from Champagne BillecartSalmon. The acidity is mouthwatering, the texture is infused with glorious whispers of wild strawberries and red raspberries, and the finish is extraordinarily long. It has been described as intense, energetic, and powerful—all terms that fit this deep and rich Champagne perfectly. (champagne-billecart.fr) CALIFORNIA CABERNET: Denise and Stephen Adams, owners of two Bordeaux estates,
are making remarkable Cabernet Sauvignon on Howell Mountain. While their flagship wine, Adamvs ($350, pronounced “adam-us”) is available in tiny quantities, Quintvs ($200) and Téres ($120) can be purchased on the open market as well as through the winery’s mailing list. These wines are complex and savory, delicious to drink and with no rough edges. California Cabernet doesn’t get much better than this. (adamvs.com) SENSUAL RUM: Ron Abuelo dates to 1908, soon after Don José Varela Blanco arrived in the newly formed Republic of Panama from Spain. At the top of the range is Centuria ($145), a family reserve matured in bourbon barrels with an average age of 30 years. The Ron Abuelo XII Años Two Oaks, Selección Especial ($75) is a blend of rums aged between eight and 40 years; sumptuous on the palate, it has an opulent texture, an intriguing balance between sweetness and spice, and a finish that seems to go on indefinitely. On the entry level, Ron Abuelo makes a 7 Year Reserva Superior ($27) and a 12 Year Gran Reserva ($41), with the latter a significant bargain for a high-quality añejo rum. (ronabuelo.com) NEW WORLD BORDEAUX BLENDS: Pierre Seillan, a sixth-generation winemaker practicing his

craft at Château Lassègue in Saint-Émilion, came to Sonoma and collaborated on Vérité with the late Jess Jackson. Each of the three wines—La Muse (93 percent Merlot), La Joie (84 percent Cabernet Sauvignon), and Le Désir (82 percent Cabernet Franc)—is stunning in itself, with great depth, pinpoint acidity, and appealing freshness. Vérité is sold through a mailing list, and after-market prices hover in the $350-$400 range. (veritewines.com) THE BEST OF WASHINGTON STATE: Alex Golitzin, a Russian émigré and the nephew of the legendary André Tchelistcheff, established Quilceda Creek in 1978. Two of their wines are available to the public: the “CVR” Red Wine ($85), a blend of Cabernet from four designated vineyards, and the benchmark Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($200), which is drinkable now or capable of aging gracefully for decades. (quilcedacreek.com) GEORGIA ON MY MIND: Once you get over the shock of paying $150 for a bottle of California Sauvignon Blanc, Georgia from Lail Vineyards is a memorable experience. Grown on a dryfarmed, three-acre site in Yountville, it is fermented and aged for 18 months in French oak barrels. While the pedigree is California, the style brings to mind Domaine de Chevalier Blanc. (lailvineyards.com) «
