Summer Days Ahead
Daphne Nikolopoulos daphne@aventuramagazine.com
CAPEHART
When vaccines first became available, the first thing I did was reschedule last summer’s canceled trips—and add a few new ones to the mix. As a result, it’s going to be a busy summer, but nothing feels as good as booking international travel again. If you agree, you’re going to love this issue. We have curated a thoughtful mix of summer adventures that offer insight both on far-flung locales and destinations closer to home. If you love a good road trip (and you also love to experience local cuisine), turn to page 50 for our “Foodie Road Trip.” In this fun, informative package, you’ll discover our state’s hottest culinary stops and learn where to get the best key lime pie, find neighborhood favorites, dine with a view of the sunset, and even sign up for hands-on cooking experiences. For the food-inclined, this editor-tested and -approved resource is a must. For our fashion feature this month, we decamped to Islamorada to the Frisbie family’s new resort, The Islands of Islamorada. Our crew stayed for a couple of days to shoot the story—and they didn’t want to leave. Check out “A Place in the Sun” on page 60, and you’ll see why. One of the travel trends that grew in popularity during the pandemic (and it’s still going strong) is travel via RV. And why not? Luxury RVs are like homes on wheels, with every creature comfort and then some. For big families (pets included!) in particular, it’s the only way to go. In “Happy Campers,” on page 70, we highlight some of our favorite destinations for outdoor adventures statewide. It affords all the fun of camping without, you know, actual camping. Whatever excursions are on your horizon this summer, we’ve got you covered. Happy trails!

ASTON MARTIN RESIDENCES ASCENDS TO ITS PINNACLE The luxury development presents its Signature Collection as sales enter the final phase
At the end of next year, the Aston Martin Residences in Miami will be complete. Located in Downtown Miami at 300 Biscayne Boulevard Way, the Residences will soar over 66 floors with 391 condominiums, including seven penthouses and one magnificent Triplex Penthouse. For their vision of the 817 feet tower, Aston Martin has partnered with global property developer, G&G Business Developments, founded by CEO, German Coto, to incorporate Aston Martin’s design DNA and precision craftsmanship with the developer’s Love For Beauty And Passion For Excellence in every detail throughout the property. With over 70% of the available apartments already sold, Aston Martin Residences presents its Signature Collection of condominiums, as sales enter the final phase. With each apartment facing the ocean as far as the eye can see, offering panoramic views of Biscayne Bay and the downtown Miami skyline, each unit will represent an uncompromising design ethos that reflects the endearing and timeless beauty of Aston Martin’s classic heritage.
From the Emerald Islands of Greece to the turquoise shores of the Miami River, the finest Thassos marble has journeyed across the Atlantic Ocean to its new home, representing an honesty and integrity of materials installed in their purest form within every Signature condominium. In addition to a spacious living area starting at 3,555 square feet for each Signature unit, residents will also be able to relax and unwind within 42,275 square feet of outstanding Sky Amenities spanning four levels, connected by a monumental glass staircase between the building’s 52nd and 55th floors. As one of the many amenities managed by the Residences’ butler service, owners will also enjoy direct access to the bay in downtown Miami via an exclusive superyacht marina. The 47 Signature Line 01 apartment owners have the choice of two special Riverwalk Editions, a DB11 V8 Coupe or a DBX, the first SUV by Aston Martin, that will live in the custom-made Aston Martin Garage, allowing every Signature homeowner to experience the authenticity of Aston Martin’s Art of Living.

elements sets the stage for a convenient retail experience, livened up by weekly curations and events. The imaginative shopping experience continues with out-of-the-box visuals, like the store’s signature indoor slide designed by Soraya Abu Naba and the Filthy Luker inflatable tentacle exterior installation, which ties back to the store’s reflection of its surrounding oceanic environment. “Showfield’s mission is to bring inspiration and function to the customer’s life by connecting them with a brand at the right time and in an unexpected way,” shares the company’s CEO Tal Zvi Nathanel, who opened his New York flagship location in 2017. “That’s why we started in power cities and always in the most iconic street there. Lincoln Road is the perfect manifestation of this definition and offers a rare alignment with our artistic approach and our customer taste.” (showfields.com) —Juliana Accioly

No other city celebrates swimwear quite like Miami—especially in the summer. This year, July 8-11 marks the return of PARAISO Miami Beach, the multi-day fashion fair, showcasing the swimwear industry’s most coveted new collections throughout different venues in the Magic City. Guests can expect a whole roster of parties, trade shows, and catwalk presentations in addition to a virtual component. Ahead of this summer’s hottest event, AVM caught up with PARAISO’s co-founder and creative director, Natalija Dedic Stojanovic, to discuss all things swim. —J.A. AVM: How has PARAISO’s format adapted since the pandemic? Dedic Stojanovic: Even though the pandemic strongly affected the fashion industry, it also offered a moment of blessing as we were able to revisit the traditional ways and find new and innovative technologies that we can implement to bring a better experience for the whole industry. All PARAISO shows are now being live-streamed, reaching 500 million households globally through our media partners. What can guests look forward to this year? PARAISO will be back this July with a full in-person schedule of events. We will be activating at new venues such as Joia Beach Club and The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach. Also, we are adding a few exciting wellness and spiritual experiences to our program. Who are some must-see swimwear designers? We are excited to see the new collections by industry leaders such as Agua Bendita, Acacia, Mikoh, Beach Bunny, and Luli Fama. Some exciting names will also appear on and off [the] PARAISO runway for the first time.

REAL ESTATE
Developments like E11EVEN Hotel & Residences (inset) and Waldorf Astoria Residences (above) are a few of the fastest-selling projects in miami.
FLOCKING SOUTH
Exploring Miami’s recent REAL ESTATE BOOM Miami is having to make way for a new group of real estate buyers excited to call South Florida home. According to the International Sales Group’s (ISG) World Miami Report, about 1,000 people are moving to Florida daily, trading high-tax, high-density areas for a paradisiacal lifestyle. “People realized they preferred to ride out the pandemic in a location with space, sunshine, an incredible lifestyle, and substantial tax benefits,” says Karen Reiter, senior global real estate advisor with ONE Sotheby’s International Realty. “The demand is extraordinary. Inventory is historically low, and this has led to a spike in prices, bidding wars with residences selling above asking price, and agents scouring for off-market deals. Properties are being sold so quickly E11EVEN Hotel & Residences living room
22
that often by the time they are listed, they are already under contract.” As a result, Miami sellers are getting top dollar for their properties. ONE Sotheby’s April market report revealed the average price of single-family homes increased to more than $1 million in March. Condo sellers are also capitalizing as offers get hotter: The average condo sale prices in Miami increased by more than 15 percent; closed transactions in waterfront areas such as Fisher Island shot up by 200 percent, Key Biscayne by 171 percent, and Sunny Isles Beach by 147 percent. Real estate experts say that with more outsiders moving in, Coral Gables, Pinecrest, PonceDavis, and other neighborhoods renowned for their schools have also seen a surge in buyer demand. New construction developments, such as downtown’s E11EVEN Hotel & Residences and the Waldorf Astoria Residences—soon to be Miami’s tallest tower—show strong sales prior to completion. “From the resort-like health amenities by Deepak Chopra to the branded entertainment venues with world-class food and beverage partners, the self-curated lifestyle of the development has been a major draw for buyers seeking unique social and wellness experiences post-COVID,” shares Kevin Maloney, managing partner of PMG.

But it is not only sellers, developers, and realtors who are benefiting, says Angel Nicolas of the Nicolas Group at Compass: Miami as a whole—including the economy—will gain from the pandemic-related housing trends and influx of migration. “Big name finance and tech businesses from New York and California are opening offices here and that has completely changed the way people see Miami,” he notes. “With that influx of business comes job opportunities in sectors that never existed in Miami before.” One question remains: When the pandemic subsides, will the market return to a more level playing field? Nicolas says the current outlook is an indicator of what could happen in years to come: “Miami was undervalued for a long time, and I think people are finally recognizing the value in it—everything from the lifestyle to the culture and affordability compared to other major metropolitan cities. I believe that the lack of inventory will keep the Miami market on an upward trend for a decent amount of time. This market could be the new normal for Miami.” —J.A.

Mask chain MOGUL
AVENTURA-BASED ENTREPRENEUR ASHLEY FINESTONE SET OUT TO FIND MORE THAN A SIMPLE CHAIN TO HOLD HER FACE MASK, AND ENDED UP CREATING A FASHION-FORWARD INVENTION INSTEAD By Michelle Payer As a self-described “germophobe,” Ashley Finestone recalls that her anxiety over where to safely store her face mask when not in use was nearly as stressful as the COVID-19 pandemic itself. “I remember walking around Aventura Circle not having a place to put my mask when no one was around,” says Finestone, 34. “I didn’t want to put it in my pocket or in my belt bag with my keys and money where it could become contaminated, so I improvised and hung it from my necklace where it was waiting for me to use again.” What followed, she says, is the aha moment she likens to an episode of Shark Tank: She decided to design a fashionable—and functional—mask chain. Finestone ran home, grabbed some paper, emptied necklaces from her closet to gauge the ideal length, and began sketching, using her fashion-forward mother, Phyllis, as a design sounding board. “I had faith in the idea,” says the McGill University graduate who majored in marketing and entrepreneurship. “Within a week, I placed my first order of 200 pieces.” She dubbed her invention Miami Mask Chains, and in June 2020, she hand-delivered the first acrylic “OG” collection to 20 of her closest friends, who promptly shared them on their Instagram pages. Finestone then built a website and received her first order two weeks later. Since the brand’s inception, Finestone has designed 10 collections, including 18-karatgold plated “So Link” and “Evil Eye” chains with hand-painted enamel. Additional collections range from the Chanel-inspired “Per Suede” and the Versace-inspired “Safety First” safety pin collection to popular chunky styles with names like Bold N’ Gold Matte, Tropical Turquoise, Vanilla Latte, and Boss Black. “I wanted the names to sell themselves,” says Finestone. “But even more importantly, I wanted high-quality, durable chains that felt 24
secure, that were formulated to hold a mask, wouldn’t rust, and could double as stunning jewelry.” Through “dozens of hours of research,” Finestone sourced the same chains that adorn multi-thousanddollar designer purses. “Manufacturers would say, ‘Ma’am that is for handbags,’ and I would respond, ‘Perfect. If it holds a handbag, it won’t break. That’s what I want, but in a custom color created for me,’” she recalls. Her latest collection, “Power Pearls”—a half pearl, half Cuban link chain—wasn’t yet for sale when a customer bought it off her neck at Miami Juice. To date, 30,000 mask chains have been sold in 200 boutiques from

Miami to Mumbai and online (miamimask chains.com). She also has a new jewelry collection in the works. Finestone’s greatest joy is realizing new business success and interacting with customers: “I still get a thrill when I see one of my mask chains on the street, hear what people love about them, and realize others are just as germ-averse as I am,” she says.

Beauty FOOD How what we eat AFFECTS OUR SKIN By Ivey Leidy Photography by Kent Anderson We all know how important diet is to overall health, but the power of food extends to beauty, too. What we eat plays a huge role in the appearance of our skin—its youthfulness and elasticity (or lack thereof). Beauty may come from within, but sometimes our body displays external cues to indicate our health. I consider the skin a map that outlines what’s going on inside the body. Oftentimes, the health of our gut is written on our skin, almost as a warning sign. Whether these signals show up as a breakout, dehydrated and dry skin, or a condition like eczema or rosacea caused by gut dysbiosis, our bodies are always communicating with us. For example, eczema can be an indicator of gluten sensitivity, and acne is often associated with dairy allergies. Changing your diet may improve your skin. The most important nutrients for healthy, supple skin are omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and collagen. Collagen supplements—and whether or not they work—are a trending topic. Collagen is a protein found in skin and connective tissue that gives skin its structure and elasticity. As we age, we produce less of it, hence the wrinkles. Because the body creates collagen from the food we consume, it’s safe to say that the most effective approach to increasing collagen levels is to eat foods that naturally boost production of this protein. Certain foods contain available collagen the body can use to help to promote the natural production of collagen—which can’t be said about over-the-counter synthetic collagen supplements. (A rule I live by is that food is your primary source of fuel for everything your body needs, and supplements are just that—supplements to food.) Some collagenboosting foods include bone broth, fish and shellfish, eggs, and foods rich in vitamin E, vitamin C, and zinc. Omega-3 fatty acids—essential fats that we can only get from food—are also vital to skin and overall health. Omega-3s decrease inflammation throughout the body, fight acne, protect against the sun’s harmful rays, and improve the skin’s natural moisture barrier, helping to keep out irritants and bacteria and giving you that healthy, dewy 26
Leidy's Goddess Bowl packs a delicious punch of skin-nourishing nutrition via good-for-you greens, veggies, oils, and more.
glow. Foods rich in omega-3s and healthy fats include salmon, tuna, avocados, walnuts, sunflower seeds, and pumpkin seeds. Other foods that can improve skin health are those high in antioxidants, such as beta-carotene, vitamin C, and other antioxidants that the body converts to vitamin A, the natural retinol; some examples are sweet potatoes, bell peppers, broccoli, dark leafy greens, tomatoes, citrus, berries, and dark chocolate that is 70 percent cacao or more. And good news for wine drinkers—red grapes contain resveratrol, an antioxidant that protects against free radicals, slowing the aging process. To prevent sun damage, up your intake of cruciferous vegetables containing sulfuric compounds that act as a natural SPF, including broccoli and kale, as well as garlic.
SKIN CARE DON’TS • Over-washing: Our bodies’ natural oils act as barriers against bacteria and allergens. Stick to a deep cleanse at night and a gentle cleanse during the day. The nighttime routine is the most important, as your skin has been exposed to pollutants and dirt all day. • Insufficient sleep: Collagen synthesis happens during rest, when cortisol levels are low. • Dehydration: Excess of anything diuretic (like alcohol
and coffee) is very dehydrating, causing early signs of aging. Frequent water consumption helps to hydrate your body’s cells and organs, especially its largest—your skin. • Poor diet: A diet high in processed foods and refined sugar results in decreased collagen production. • Stress: An excess of the stress hormone cortisol has been shown to cause acne flare-ups.

• Remove tofu from packaging and place between several paper towels. • Rest a heavy cutting board or book on top of tofu and let the liquid drain for at least an hour. I typically do this the morning of and let it dry all day—this ensures your tofu gets nice and crispy. • After drying, cut tofu into equalsized cubes. • Preheat oven to 400 degrees. • On a parchment-lined baking sheet, add cubed sweet potato and drizzle with avocado oil. • Roast for 20 minutes.

ith a complement of waterfalls, ice caves, black sand beaches, and glacial volcanoes, Iceland offers an otherworldly escape for Americans who have completed their COVID-19 vaccinations. While a visit to the capital city of Reykjavik is a must-do, a two-hour drive to Iceland’s South Coast gives travelers access to some of the island’s most awe-inspiring attractions. Southern Iceland’s wide-open spaces offer plenty of room to socially distance. While the Fagradalsfjall volcano—which began erupting near Reykjavik in March—remains untamed, Iceland has kept the COVID-19

pandemic under control by meticulously tracking cases. Today, U.S. citizens can visit if they’re fully vaccinated or can provide documentation of a prior infection. Upon arrival, visitors must take a PCR test and shelter in place until negative test results are received (typically within 6 to 24 hours). After that, you’re free to roam.

The South Coast offers epic waterfalls, including Gljúfrabúi: Concealed by a cliff, it often sits unnoticed next to the tourist-favored, 200foot Seljalandsfoss waterfall. To get there you’ll wade through a shallow stream into a mossy cave, where gushing water theatrically cascades into a small pool lit as if by a spotlight. Or visit the mighty Gullfoss falls—unique in that you can take in their glory from above instead of below. But Iceland offers more than just waterfalls. For bubbling mud pots and boiling hot springs, make your way to the Geysir geothermal area or try Thingvellir National Park (thingvellir.is/en), a UNESCO World Heritage Site that marks the place where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet and drift apart. If you skipped the Blue Lagoon, stop at the nearby Secret Lagoon (secretlagoon.is) to dip in a lesscrowded, man-made pool fed by hot springs.

You’ll feel the power of Mother Nature on the volcanic black-sand beaches of Reynisfjara, where towering sea stacks jut from the Atlantic Ocean and powerful waves thunder ashore. The jagged basalt cliffs (a backdrop for cinematic works like Game of Thrones and Star Wars) are a perfect spot to snap Instagram-worthy pictures—but beware of sneaker waves, which have swept away unsuspecting visitors. To see the landscape from a slower pace, opt for a tour via native Icelandic horses by making reservations at Skeiðdvellir (skeidvellir. is), a horse-breeding farm. Guided tours take riders through scenic meadows in the shadows of volcanoes and glaciers. If you visit southern Iceland during winter, explore the area’s ethereal ice caves with a guide from Southcoast Adventure (it’s dangerous to explore ice caves on your own) (southadventure.is). Inside a glacier atop the Katla volcano are wind-carved walls of curved ice in brilliant hues of blue. You’ll walk, crawl, and sometimes slide on your belly through mysterious passageways. Turn off your flashlight and the ice will twinkle like a star-filled sky.

QUICK TRIPS
Go Ask Alys
Alys Beach pairs the LUXURY of a posh, far-flung resort with the family-friendly vibe of a LOW-KEY beach town By Kristen Desmond LeFevre On Highway 30A in Florida’s Panhandle— with its pastel palettes and beachy kitsch—a pair of stark white minaret-like structures announces that you’ve arrived in Alys Beach, a place utterly exotic and comfortable at the same time. Sure, you’re still in Florida, but the clusters of white-washed masonry buildings that gleam under the relentless sun make you think of—where is it exactly? Bermuda? Santorini? Muscat? Guatemala? Boasting a unique mix of worldly architectures in a way that just works, Alys Beach is a serene and sophisticated spot that feels worlds away from its location on Florida’s Emerald Coast, just a few hours west of Tallahassee. Twice the size of neighboring Seaside, Alys
Beach is an idyllic New Urbanist town of 900 villas, cottages, and homes built around central courtyards. You won’t find a hotel in Alys Beach; instead, visitors are invited to live like locals and rent a private pad, making it the ideal getaway for a refined family vacation. While you’ll surely be tempted to lounge all day in your perfectly appointed accommodations (many boasting private pools, fire pits, and roof decks), there’s plenty to see and do in the town beyond. Start your day with old-fashioned doughnuts and smoothies from Charlie’s Donut Truck; the converted Sunbeam bread truck parks next to the amphitheater every morning, chock-full of dough-based confections that bakers cut and glaze by hand. (The maple-bacon doughnut, which is topped with a mountain of bacon crumbles, sells out daily, so get there early to snag one.) The town’s public squares, cobblestone streets, and palm tree-lined alleys make exploring via bicycle a must-do, if only for the Instagram opportunities the outing affords. Kids and adults alike will relish the slow pace of cruising around town to peep and play at the many water
features and public art installations. Plus, there’s no better way to tour the town’s 20-acre nature preserve, which includes an elevated wooden boardwalk offering the best view of your natural surroundings—from a pine and cypress forest to a coastal dune lake to a meadow of wiregrass and wildflowers. While you’re at it, bike over to George’s (georgesatalysbeach.com) for a leisurely lunch. The menu invites guests to choose items from its spa-inspired Behave section (try the grilled salmon with red quinoa) or its more indulgent Misbehave section (the fried shrimp with hush puppies is a must-have). But at its heart, Alys is a beach town, so be sure to sample its sugary white Gulf of Mexico sand and water as clear as the Caribbean Sea. Skip hauling and setting up your beach gear; you can rent it with one call to The Bike Shop. Feeling peckish? Food and beverages can be delivered straight to your setup in the sand. Stay for the sunset (always sure to stun) and end the evening with a bespoke beach bonfire, complete with s’mores. It may be too dark to snap a good selfie for the ’Gram, but the memories will last a lifetime. (alysbeach.com)

ODE TO THE ORB It seems appropriate that Robin Hill, whose work straddles art and design, would be chosen to display her photography inside The Betsy Orb—a curious, egg-shaped structure connecting the hotel’s two residential buildings. “The Art of the Orb” is a collection of different architectural perspectives of the Orb itself. Some are taken by day, some at night with the structure awash in projected light. They invite the viewer to contemplate its shape from above, below, and even peeking around a corner. The fun is in seeing the exhibit and then trying to replicate Hill’s perspectives (harder than you’d think) for Instagram.
Culture SAFARI Catch a VIBE and expand your cultural horizons at THE BETSY South Beach By Daphne Nikolopoulos You might not automatically associate Miami’s South Beach with incisive personal narratives or the intellectual examination of artistic expression, but this is exactly what makes The Betsy Hotel stand apart from the party palaces on Ocean Drive. Dubbed “a destination with purpose,” The Betsy beckons with more than sparkling pools, elevated food, and stylish rooms. Its essence is driven by thoughtfully curated art collections, nightly music, culture-driven community gatherings, and a deep affection for poetry and literature. Below are four can’t-miss touchpoints that are perfect reasons to visit this cultural gem. (thebetsyhotel.com)

FULL-FRONTAL FASHION Barbara Hulanicki is one of those mythical figures who has done more in a lifetime than seems humanly possible. In the 1960s, she launched fashion house Biba, a favorite of celebrities and fashion upstarts (Anna Wintour was an intern). She designed hotel interiors for South Beach’s art deco revival, plus several Caribbean properties for hotelier Chris Blackwell. And she created a body of fashionfocused photography of dancers, models, and notables wearing her clothes. A collection of these images, curated by co-owner Lesley Goldwasser, hangs at LT Steak & Seafood at The Betsy. Don’t be surprised if, while looking at one of her photos, you spy Hulanicki herself. She resides blocks away from the hotel and visits often.
IT’S LIT The Betsy’s owners, the Plutzik family, have literature in their DNA. The late poet and Pulitzer Prize finalist Hyam Plutzik was the inspiration for both a robust library containing rare and firstedition volumes and an extensive poetry collection, and The Writer’s Room—the latter is a studio space where artists-inresidence, selected via a competitive application process, may stay and write. The room is tiny but highly functional, and it contains Hyam Plutzik’s own desk for maximum creative vibes. Visiting writers host salons to discuss their work with the community, so be on the lookout for these regularly scheduled events.
SOULFUL SOUNDS Every night, The Betsy’s lobby bar gets supercharged with the energy of live jazz and Latin rhythms by Miami musicians like Tal Cohen, Wilkie Ferguson, and Beau Cornelius. In addition, there are regularly scheduled musical events under the banner “Zen and the Art of,” which introduce Betsy patrons to a variety of art forms. Recent programs have included zarzuela, faith-based music, and contemporary classical piano. In July and August, expect nightly performances and pop-ups by the Miami Classical Music Festival June 28 to July 18.

Tangerine DREAM
Lamborghini’s new fast and furious Huracán EVO RWD Spyder is an assault on the senses By Howard Walker We all know about endorphins, the spunky polypeptides produced by the body to stimulate feelings of immense pleasure. Eating chocolate and drinking wine are great endorphin releasers, but there’s another source of endorphin production that’s far more effective than any Godiva or Pinot Noir. Let me introduce you to the newest offering from Lamborghini, the tangerine dream machine known as the Huracán EVO RWD Spyder. The endorphins this 602-horsepower, V-10 engined beauty delivers are up there with hearing Pavarotti hit the high notes of “Nessun Dorma” or receiving a basket of kittens to cuddle.
There aren’t enough superlatives in Webster’s to adequately describe the way this hurricane-force machine can slingshot itself off the line, dragster-style. Nothing prepares you for the ensuing mayhem as this rocket ship spins its rear wheels like a Fourth of July pinwheel, lunging at the horizon in a haze of flambéed rubber. I’ve driven plenty of superfast cars; this one scared the snot out of me. Time, perhaps, for CliffsNotes on the raging bull from Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy. Introduced in 2014, the Huracán replaced the much-loved Gallardo as the first rung on the ladder of Lamborghini ownership. Over the
years it evolved first into the Huracán Performante, then the EVO. But it always stuck with all-wheel drive to help wrangle all that power—and keep drivers out of the hedgerows. For purists, having all-wheel drive has been a bone of contention. They argue that it somehow desensitized the car, taking away the raw, driverfocused, laser-precise responses. Last year, however, the wraps came off the Huracán EVO RWD, with that honking mid-mounted 5.2-liter V-10 spinning just the rear rims. More nimble and tailhappy, it instantly became the most fun-driving old-school Lambo money could buy. And speaking of lira, the base price of the Florida-orange Spyder convertible is $229,428, around $15,000 more than the $214,366 Coupe version. Must-have add-on options easily take the sticker north of $250,000. Toggle a switch and that tight-fitting canvas roof powers back, disappearing beneath a hard cover in a mere 17 seconds and at speeds up to 31 mph. Top down, the Huracán makes a terrific convertible, with hardly any wind

buffeting, even at close to triple-digit velocities. Having the top dropped is all the better for inhaling a manic Guns N’ Roses soundtrack. Inside, you sit in hip-hugging carbon fiber–shelled seats, gripping a wheel that looks straight out of a race car. The theater that goes into operating this orange projectile is so very Italian—flick up a big red flap to hit the start button, pull back on an oversized lever to engage reverse, and shift gears with paddle shifters the size of elephant ears; Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick would feel right at home. This newest Huracán is a pure and passionate assault on the senses. In today’s hyper-car world, 0-to-60 in 3.3 seconds is nothing special: There are kid-toting Teslas that get there in 2.4, as will the all-wheel-drive Huracán EVO. But the fury of the RWD’s acceleration, the brutal 8,000-rpm upshifts, and that truly spine-tingling, hairs-on-the-back-of-your-neck-raising soundtrack makes it feel like the Starship Enterprise hitting warp speed. Rear-drive-only boosts those endorphins. The

WHERE TO STAY The variety of accommodation types at the five-hotel collection that is the Kimpton Key West (kimptonkeywest.com)—from original Bahamian-style “conch cottages” to elegant guesthouses—isn’t the only draw of the digs. Foodies will find lots to love, too: Book a Hemingway Affair for an intimate dining experience for two to 14 people in the two-story Hemingway Suite, during which a personal chef will prepare a multi-course meal suited to guests’ tastes; for a more casual culinary detour, kick back at poolside bars with a can of Cayo Hueso, the hotel’s own brew crafted by local Waterfront Brewery and exclusively available at Kimpton Key West.
Don’t leave the Keys without pleasing your palate with these must-try regional classics: Conch fritters: Doughy and flavorful, they’re the islands in one flash-fried bite. Fresh fish: Yellowtail snapper, grouper, mahi, wahoo, and hogfish are the usual local catches; in the crustacean family, order Florida lobster or stone crab in season. Cuban coffee: The Southernmost Point marks 90 miles to Cuba—so close you can taste it, especially with a cortadito from nearby Cuban Coffee Queen (cubancoffeequeen.com), a counter-serve spot with personality. Tip: The iconic “Greetings from Key West” mural graces the side of the stand, so snap a pic as you sip. Kermit’s frozen key lime pie on a stick

“A nice place if you can find it” is the slogan of Big Pine Key’s No Name Pub (nonamepub.com), which is indeed off the beaten path—down a maze of residential streets and tucked away in an otherwise unremarkable neighborhood. Few places can trace nearly 100 years of history and still fly under the radar, but No Name Pub does exactly that.

Perhaps every visitor to Key West since 1933—when the institution, ahem, conveniently opened the very day Prohibition was repealed—has darkened the doorway of Sloppy Joe’s (sloppyjoes.com); it’s a non-negotiable stop on any Keys itinerary worth its salt. Talking top key lime pies renders controversy: Tart or sweet? Whipped cream or meringue? Pastry or graham cracker crust? It’s all a matter of taste; try these in the name of research: Mrs. Mac’s Kitchen (mrsmacskitchen.com) has two Key Largo locations where you can sample a slice that may change your life. Creamy and ice-cold, its tangy zip is cut by the understated sweetness of a homemade graham-cracker crust and a hefty dollop of a Cool Whip-like topping. What’s better than a slice of key lime pie? When it opened in 2007, The Ravenous Pig (theravenouspig.com) heralded the city’s arrival as a serious food destination. Nearly 15 years later, owners James and Julie Petrakis continue to grow their gastropub into one of the best restaurants in the South. The addition of former Dovecote chef-owner Clay Miller as chef de cuisine only solidified the Pig’s rep as the place to indulge in elevated pub fare with a Southern twang (mulard duck ham, lamb saddle, or pork burnt ends, anyone?). On tap are small-batch craft beers produced by the Ravenous Pig Brewing Co., which is situated next to the restaurant’s newly constructed family-friendly beer garden.
The stunning artistry of the seasonally driven dishes is worth the price tag ($150 for a 15-course omakase and $185 for the 20-course), be it lobster nigiri with brown butter miso or a decadent ending of “mat-cho” featuring a delicate masterwork of matcha, chocolate, and burnt marshmallow. There are only eight seats in this cozy Winter Park locale, so book early and prepare your taste buds for a memorable adventure.

Kevin and Maria Ruiz have garnered a loyal, almost obsessive following for presenting upmarket takes on classic Peruvian fare at their pop-ups. When they finally opened Papa Llama (papallamaorl.com), a brick-and-mortar operation in Orlando’s Curry Ford West district, they were greeted with a buzz. The bright, modern space reflects the dishes Kevin fires up in the sizeable kitchen, like chicharrón de calamar with herbaceous wakatay salsa, and a snappy arroz chicken chaufa with smoky ají panca, Peruvian choclo, and bok choy. The focused selection of natural wines purposefully veers into the esoteric.

Two of the best are Oxford Exchange (oxfordexchange.com)—an Instagramfamous boutique/resto with playful bites like poppy seed pancakes and whipped feta with toasted pistachios—and Steelbach (steelbach.com), a haven for Southern delicacies in the überpopular Armature Works food hall (armatureworks.com).

The boutique Hotel Haya (hotelhaya.com) embodies the best of new and old Ybor. The boutique property, opened last fall, spans two historic buildings: one that formerly housed Tampa’s oldest restaurant and another believed to have been a haunt of Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. Tampa-based Alfonso Architects is responsible for the mid-century-meetsglobal-casita decor. Throughout, you’ll spot creations by local makers, including cigars by J.C. Newman Cigars (a nod to Ybor’s tobacco-steeped past) and glass works by artists from the Morean Art Center, the most impressive of which is a chandelier in flagship restaurant Flor Fina. Helmed by executive chef Douglas
Rodriguez—lauded as the godfather of Nuevo Latino cuisine—Flor Fina is the heart of Hotel Haya. A Top Chef Masters alum, Rodriguez marries Gulf Coast bounty with influences from Latin America, the Mediterranean, and Cuba. Ceviche is a top draw, so sample creative concoctions like the Amarillo Mixto with octopus, shrimp, calamari, passion fruit pulp, and blue sweet potato; desserts like the quatro leches (sponge cake, dulce de leche, and toffee brittle) tell the sweeter side of Ybor’s culinary story.

Walk through downtown to historic Burns Court— where 1920s bungalows dot the landscape—to Owen’s Fish Camp (owensfishcamp.com). Ask for a table under the light-strung banyan tree, a gift from Thomas Edison to the restaurant’s original owner. While you wait (they don’t take reservations), snap an Insta-worthy selfie on the nearby tire swing. Menuwise, don’t miss the local Cedar Key clams bathed in a chorizo and saffron-scented broth or the Creole fish gumbo with crawfish tails. Shrimp and grits and the Low-Country boil are staples here, but the oysters (grilled or raw) are the main attraction. Save room for the fried black cherry pie à la mode; it’s semi-legendary for a reason. 56
On Longboat Key, Mar Vista Dockside Restaurant and Pub (marvistadining.com) invites you to relax under a tangle of buttonwood trees laden with bistro lights and staghorn ferns. The patio gives way to a sandy beach and the quiet waters of Sarasota Bay. Come by car or by boat—there are 14 slips to welcome dock-anddiners—and order the Bud & Old Bay Bowl, composed of Gulf shrimp sautéed in Budweiser, Old Bay seasoning, and garlic butter. The shrimp are served with their heads on, but that’s a sure sign of just how fresh they are. It’s the perfect dish to share with a cocktail in hand while taking in soothing water views alongside a roaring firepit.

See the 1991 film City Slickers before visiting this state park, an 1876 cow camp where cowboy heritage remains alive and kicking. Perhaps the most entertaining aspect is the living history reenactment each weekend, which transports visitors to a time when a “cow hunter’s” life was spent herding cattle between Florida’s cow camps and downtime was spent on hard ground beside a campfire. Payment in Spanish gold doubloons was a decent enough incentive, say the actor cowboys, but probably few of us city slickers would last a day. Hundreds of manatees call this large St. Johns River spring home, and although swimming with them isn’t permitted, it’s nearly impossible not to encounter one of these gentle sea cows: the cheeky fellas take great delight in swimming alongside humans and partaking in aquatic adventure. Snorkel through crystal-clear waters, float with an inner tube (rentals available) down Blue Spring boil’s natural lazy river, or launch a kayak for a zen-like wander through lush woodland areas surrounding the spring. Possibly as famous as the manatees are the cavern and cave diving opportunities—restricted to certified cave divers—and scuba diving, which is allowed only with a buddy. Visitors say the hidden and mysterious underwater holes lead to otherworldly places and swear it is one of the best places in Florida to scuba dive. Don’t miss a visit to the Thursby house, the well preserved nineteenth-century home of European settler Louis Thursby, who hoped to strike it rich with an orange grove and a steamship pier. Visitors can also kiteboard or paddleboard on the Atlantic, kayak through Curry Hammock’s picturesque waterways, hike through miles of nature trails, and fish for tarpon, snook, redfish, and mangrove snapper on the shoreline. A state fishing license is required but can be readily obtained online. (floridastateparks.org/parks-andtrails/curry-hammock-state-park)

A picturesque drive south toward Key West will yield what is arguably one of Florida’s most famous snorkel spots—John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo. Adjacent to the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and the country’s first undersea park, it’s considered an underwater Grand Canyon, offering a rare glimpse into colorful coral formations. The outside world is left behind when exploring delicate ecosystems via glass-bottom boat, kayak, canoe, or scuba diving here. Thick mangroves provide shelter for inexperienced snorkelers, and these quiet respites sometimes yield close encounters with curious manatees, sea turtles, and dolphins. A short hike through the park exposes an ancient artesian well hidden within mangrove swamps, while walking trails through tropical hammocks lead to picnicking, bird-watching, and fishing spots. Thirty-nine RV sites are available, all dog-friendly with electric hookups and a long list of amenities, from barbecue grills to interpretive programs and handicap accessibility. One of the country’s most famous national parks is at Florida’s southern end, where a million and a half acres of swamps, subtropical jungles, and sawgrass marshes beckon visitors to commune with nature. Fourteen endangered species reside here, meaning you’re immersed in untamed beauty. Yet the adventures are easily and comfortably navigable with plenty of modern conveniences. Choose relaxation or adventure with hiking and biking trails, kayak and canoe rentals, exotic wildlife and bird-watching perches, and world-class fishing. Several campgrounds abound, yet the Flamingo Campground is quickly rising to visitor “favorite” status for its seemingly infinite Florida Bay views, refreshing year-round breeze, and camping options. The newest—and only “glamping” alternative on the list—is Flamingo’s safari-style Eco Tents. Slightly elevated off the ground, these fully furnished tents have electricity plus a dresser, bookshelf, queen or two full-sized beds, sheets, removable bug-protection screen, and private outdoor patio seating area. Showers, a community grill, and a marina store are nearby for all the essentials. RV camping is just next door with 65 spots, many with electrical hookups. Don’t feel landlocked, though. Boat options are abundant with single and double kayaks and canoes for rent, as well as motorized skiffs and pontoons. For another adventurous overnight option, a limited number of Flamingo Adventures Houseboats are available–complete with A/C while docked. Outfitted with two bedrooms, a living room, bathroom, galley, gas oven/range, and fully stocked kitchen, these floating homes sleep up to four adults and two kids, the ideal family getaway or romantic retreat. WHAT IS YOUR POSITION ON THE CURRENT SOUTH FLORIDA REAL ESTATE MARKET?
My position is that there’s nowhere on Earth like Miami. Having tropical weather and crystal clear waters, the quality of life is a dream. The demand for neighborhoods, privacy, and space has increased. North Miami Dade County has seen explosive growth comfortably distanced within an arm’s length to the city’s core. My
outlook is that we’re positioned perfectly, and the party has just started.
WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE TO YOUR PERSONAL SUCCESS IN THIS INDUSTRY?
Passion. I’m passionate about my extensive local knowledge. As a Golden Beach native who recently bought my first home here, I am able to relate to all age gaps of families. This passion has translated into many happy families and hundreds of millions in sales. I recently

Leader Luxury IN
DURING HIS 26-YEAR CAREER, SCOTT PATTERSON, SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT OF BERKSHIRE HATHAWAY HOMESERVICES EWM REALTY, HAS BECOME ONE OF SOUTH FLORIDA’S FOREMOST EXPERTS ON THE MARKETING AND SALE OF LUXURY REAL ESTATE. THE KEY TO PATTERSON’S SUCCESS? TREATING ALL OF HIS CUSTOMERS AS IF THEY WERE HIS ONLY CUSTOMER.
WHAT CHANGES IN THE MARKET HAVE YOU SEEN IN THE PAST YEAR? Other than the surge in demand, the biggest shift is where the buyers are coming from. Prior to the pandemic, we saw mostly international buyers and buyers from the Northeast. Now, I’m working with some of the wealthiest buyers from across the U.S. Executives from cities such as New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Boston are relocating themselves and their companies here. They have come to realize the region offers a superb quality of life: the lifestyle, weather, beaches, boating, a vibrant social scene, and low taxes.

WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON MISTAKES SELLERS MAKE WHEN PRICING THEIR HOME?
One is basing the sales price on the neighboring properties that haven’t sold. Other pitfalls include trying to recoup money spent on renovations, basing the sales price on a personal financial necessity, and trying to sell without motivation, or starting with a high price to “test” the market with plans to lower the price in the future. We at The Pulido Group help our clients solve these problems every day.

Talent Show By Paul Rubio
Chef Tyson Cole placed Austin, Texas, on the foodie map circa 2003 when his first solo endeavor, a non-traditional sushi restaurant called Uchi, garnered nearly every accolade imaginable and later landed Cole a James Beard Award in 2011. Now, in the latest chapter of his celebrity chef career, Cole transplants this signature restaurant to Wynwood, where it lives up to the hype of the original. This time it’s set in a loft-meets-eco-chic setting of hand-woven rope, custom woodwork, and metal and botanical wall coverings. Serious food lovers can’t get enough of Cole’s ingenuity, underscored by dishes like composed oysters with lemongrass, coconut, and finger lime; masu pom (ocean trout dressed in pomegranate zu and topped with gooseberry); and roasted cauliflower with curried raisins, gruyere, and cashews. There are also more traditional compo

sitions of sushi and sashimi—perfected to a level expected from one of America’s few sushi masters—including special selections direct from Tokyo’s Toyosu Market (hello, melt-in-your-mouth bluefin tuna loin.) Add to the mix a menu of thoughtful cocktails incorporating Japanese spirits, and it’s easy to see why this modern Japanese-Texas juggernaut has quickly risen to the top of Miami’s restaurant scene. Beloved Miami chef José Mendín surprises and delights with his latest venture, Casa Isola, which promises anything but typical South Beach fare. Eschewing standard SoBe flash, the intimate osteria charms with a European holein-the-wall style design, recalling coastal Italy through white-and-blue decor. Within these cozy quarters, Mendín and Sicilian-born partner, chef Santo Agnello, dole out hearty Italian cuisine that’s at once elevated and simple while remaining affordable. butter. Next, go for the impeccably balanced, zesty-and-smooth burrata panzanella salad, followed by the divine raviolini ai funghi with porcini mushrooms and pine nut gremolata. Alternatively, feed into the Beach’s rigatoni alla vodka craze—it’s currently on just about every menu—or go light with the branzino acqua pazza, prepared in white wine with parsley, tomato, and littleneck clams. End with one (or both) of Isola’s timeless desserts: tiramisu in a jar or the Cartocci Siciliani, soft-shelled cannoli stuffed with creamy ricotta goodness. (casaisolamiami.com) —P.R.

SUSHI CRAZE
Clockwise from inset: Katsuya’s dining room, sashimi omakase, and spicy tuna crispy rice.
Dynamic Duo In a time when Miami seems to be debuting new sushi concepts weekly, seasoned residents Katsuya South Beach and Dragon Lounge rise above the hullaballoo of today’s trendsetting competition. The secret to the success of master sushi chef Katsuya Uechi’s namesake restaurant is simple: Continue serving the tried-and-true dishes that branded Katsuya a national icon—items like the signature spicy tuna crispy rice, baked crab handrolls, king crab tempura, and crispy brussels sprouts tossed in balsamic soy. Likewise, don’t mess with the drink menu that once defined the mixology movement; accept it as timeless. Pioneering cocktails like the Burning Mandarin (Ketel One orange, mandarin reduction, lemon, and serrano tincture) and Jasmine’s Margarita (Volcan Blanco tequila, jasmine green tea, grenadine, lime, and orange bitters) never go out of style. Above Katsuya South Beach, the hidden Dragon Lounge stays popular, too, by wooing locals for a nightly Social Hour from 6-8 p.m. During that time, starters and handrolls range from $6-$8, and select specialty cocktails run $10. It’s a fun, flavorful, and flirty pre-dinner experience, whether dining at Katsuya or elsewhere. (sbe.com/restaurants) —P.R.

Ice Cream Holiday
We agree there are too many official and unofficial food holidays these days. However, what we’re not complaining about is National Ice Cream Day on July 18 and the pinnacle of National Ice Cream Month. Take it as a cue to sample some of the new and noteworthy parlors in the Magic City. Consider Salt & Straw (saltandstraw.com), the small-batch, Portlandbased ice cream company with shops in both Wynwood and Coconut
Grove. Ooh and ahh over signature scoops of Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons and Salted, Malted Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, seasonal flavors, plus onlyin-Miami taste sensations (think: The Salty Donut Guava + Cheese). Feed your cravings for Instagramworthy, handcrafted ice cream sandwiches at Wynwood Parlor (wynwoodparlor.com) in Edgewater—or simply have it shipped to your doorstep through Goldbelly. Choose from two-dozen creations, four of which are vegan, and include the colorful Birthday Cake and decadent Vegan Peanut Butter Cup varieties. Finally, discover the buzz surrounding Aventura Mall’s Quore Gelato (quoregelato.com), which infuses and spikes gelatos with premium liquors to create flavors such as Bananas Foster and Cognac and refreshing strawberry-laced Rosa Champagne. —P.R.

This month we celebrate our country and our culture. No matter how you’re commemorating, toast the season with this cooling “poptail.” The Pimm’s Cup is a quintessential summer libation. Here, I’ve outlined the recipe for the original Pimm’s Cup, followed by the poptail version from my new cocktail book, Low-Proof Happy Hour (Countryman Press, 2021). With the traditional base of Pimm’s, lemon, and ginger flavors, this frozen sip gets an additional kick from the unexpected crimson peppercorn syrup. —Jules Aron

GOURMAND OFF THE VINE
Wine-Country Crawl
This summer, EXPLORE lesser-known wine regions within America’s borders
By Mark Spivak
F
or wine lovers yearning to get back on the vineyard trail this summer, there’s bad news and good news: Many European countries may not be accepting visitors, but emerging wine regions in our own country still await discovery. If you’re looking to explore beyond the usual suspects in California, Oregon, and Washington State, consider these lesser-known areas: Finger Lakes, New York State: The pioneer of the region was Dr. Konstantin Frank, who emigrated from the Soviet Union in the early 1950s and found the climate to be perfect for Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris. Today there are over 130 wineries in the area concentrated around Lake Ontario as well as Cayuga, Seneca, Keuka, and Canandaigua Lakes. A good place to start is Dr. Frank’s winery in Hammondsport, which remains family-run. Other top destinations include the Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard, known for top Rieslings, as well as Hearts and Hands, Heron Hill, Lamoreaux Landing, Glenora Wine Cellars, and Wagner Vineyards. (fingerlakeswinecountry.com)

Clockwise from above: Finger Lakes wine country; wine tasting in the Texas Hill Country; strolling Becker Vineyards; fresh pour at Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard.
Texas Hill Country: Ranked as the fifth-largest wine-producing state, Texas has attracted the attention of serious oenophiles in recent years. The Texas Hill Country AVA has nearly 100 wineries clustered around Fredericksburg. Cabernet and Tempranillo are popular, along with hybrids such as Black Spanish and Blanc du Bois. Must-see wineries include Becker Vineyards, a pioneer in the region since 1995 and the first producer to cultivate Viognier; Fall Creek Vineyard, where Susan and Ed Auler have been producing Bordeaux and Rhône-style blends since 1975; Fredericksburg Winery, where the Switzer family makes everything from white and red table wine to port and sherry; and mavericks such as Spicewood, Crowson, and Bending Branch. (texaswinetrail.com) Virginia: In the Colonial era, settlers in Virginia were required by law to plant vineyards; although it’s now optional, there are nearly 300 wineries scattered throughout 10 distinct regions and eight recognized AVAs to show for it. The largest is the 227-acre Trump Winery (the former Kluge Estate) on the Monticello Wine Trail, purchased by the former president in

Shenandoah Vineyards near Edinburg, the state’s second-oldest winery, is a good place to start; nearby destinations include Cave Ridge Vineyard, Wolf Gap, and the Winery at Kindred Pointe. tourism. The bestknown is the Biltmore Winery, located outside of Asheville on George Vanderbilt’s 8,000-acre estate, with dozens of bottlings ranging from Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec to Riesling, white Rhône varieties, and sparkling wine. Other must-see destinations include Childress Vineyards in Lexington, Raffaldini Vineyards in Ronda, and Banner Elk Winery & Villa and Grandfather Vineyard & Winery, both in Banner Elk. (ncwine.org) Long Island: The North Fork’s maritime climate is perfect for Bordeaux grape varie-
ties, and the region is now the third-largest producer of wine grapes in the country (after California and Washington State). Pioneers include Paumanok Vineyards, known for their award-winning Chenin Blanc; Bedell Cellars, famous for their benchmark Bedell Musée, a Bordeaux-style blend; and Lenz Winery, founded in 1978 and specializing in Merlot. Smaller gems include Channing Daughters and Shinn Estate. (liwines.com) «

DIVINE DONATION Thanks to New York–based art collector Dr. Robert B. Feldman, the Jewish Museum of Florida–FIU now has a beautiful new art installation for visitors to admire. The large-scale work by artist Mira Lehr is called “Sacred Dreams” and features 183 delicate sculptures made of burned and dyed Japanese paper, acrylic, ink, and resin that descend from the ceiling of the museum. Guests will be able to view the stunning artwork throughout the year as a part of the South Beach–based museum’s permanent collection. —Melissa Puppo
