INDIAN RIVER COMMUNITY FOUNDATION is proud to partner with Vero Beach Magazine to publish the 2020 “Guide to Better Giving.” This year’s edition builds on Vero Beach Magazine’s long tradition of listing helpful information about the many charitable organizations serving our community and sharing stories of their impact. Our contribution brings the experience of carrying out a mission of building a better community through donor-driven philanthropy, along with insights we have gained by serving as a trusted philanthropic advisor to our community’s most generous donors for more than a decade.
Here’s what “better giving” means to us.
“Better giving” means providing you with better information about local charities. The charities listed in the following pages meet the highest standard for transparency, and most are included
in the Community Foundation’s online Nonprofit Search. This comprehensive resource includes information on the governance, operations, finances and programs of more than 100 local charities. Use it to find, learn about and give directly to the causes that are most important to you.
“Better giving” also means getting better results from the time, talent and treasure you invest in local charities. For more than 50 years, this is what the United Way of Indian River County has promised to deliver through its annual campaign and “Day of Caring.” Its work to advance the common good in the areas of health, education and financial stability has made a measurable difference in the lives of many of our neighbors in need. Delivering better results, however, is not just the domain of our United Way. Every sector of this community’s
nonprofit community excels, from animals to the arts to the environment to historical preservation.
Finally, “better giving” means finding better ways to give to the local charities you care about most. Inside the guide you’ll find stories that will help you understand how to get the most impact from your giving, such as setting up donor-advised funds and legacy gifts that extend the good you do into the future.
Whatever sparks your generosity, Vero Beach Magazine and Indian River Community Foundation hope the 2020 Guide to Better Giving can help.
JEFFREY R. PICKERING President and CEO Indian River Community FoundationEVER SINCE THE FIRST issue of Vero Beach Magazine rolled off the presses 22 years ago, articles about local nonprofit organizations and how they work to make our community a better place to live have been featured on the pages. I know, as I’ve been blessed to write about many of them. Their stories never cease to amaze and inspire me.
Over the years, as the number of nonprofits grew in response to newly identified local needs, it became clear there simply weren’t enough pages in the magazine to let our readers know about all the work they do.
That’s why many years
ago we launched the Vero Beach Guide to Giving, an annual publication that has the names of the nonprofits, their mission and volunteer information, as well as a fundraising event calendar.
This year, in collaboration with the Indian River Community Foundation, our guide goes a step further by including information about how giving through donor-advised funds and gift-giving programs can make a significant difference and financial sense.
Along the way, you’ll meet individuals such as Louis Lawson, Neill and Linda Currie, and Ted and Dawn Michael who actively
support the causes they care about. You will also get to know Jeff Pickering, president and CEO of the Indian River Community Foundation, a lifelong believer in the positive power of philanthropy.
Welcome to the 2020 Guide to Giving — Better.

FIVE YEARS AGO, NEILL AND Linda Currie of Wilmington, North Carolina, not only fell in love with Vero Beach, they decided it was where they wanted to spend part of the year. One of the first things Neill did after settling into their barrier island home was to look into local nonprofit organizations to see where he could get involved. The one that stood out was the Indian River Community Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public benefit charity that believes a healthy nonprofit sector is essential to the community’s overall quality of life. He found it to be the perfect fit. It didn’t take long before Neill joined the board of directors, and he has completed his term as chairman. Handing over the gavel this past June doesn’t mean he’s no longer involved, however.
“I’m 66 years old and have retired twice. I’m an advocate that you don’t wear out; you rust out,” says Neill, by way of emphasizing the importance of having a purpose and giving back no matter where you find yourself in life.
“Linda and I have always been very philanthropic, and one of the things we like about the Community Foundation is that it doesn’t tell people how to give. It acts as a facilitator,” he says.
“Setting up a donor-advised fund is really a simple process, and there’s a lot of flexibility. For instance, Linda and I love to travel. We could be anywhere and I can be on the internet, go into my IRCF account, type on a box, and if it’s a nonprofit I’ve contributed to before, all I have to do is click and the funds are transferred, and the foundation writes the check to the nonprofit.”
It’s no wonder the Curries and other generous individuals choose to give through IRCF. Donor-advised
funds are the foundation’s most popular charitable giving products as more individuals, families and local businesses seek a simple, costeffective alternative to creating a private foundation.
Established in 2008, IRCF has assets of approximately $70 million in 175 charitable giving accounts, and its clients have awarded more than $60 million in grants, the majority to nonprofit charitable organizations located right here in Indian River County.
Impressive.
However, there is more that needs to be done.
A United Way
(Asset Limited Income Constrained Employed) needs assessment report shows that 51% of the county’s 55,000 households struggle to pay for the most basic needs: shelter, food and clothing. Earlier this year, the IRCF joined with the United Way, the Florida Department of
Health of Indian River County and the Children’s Services Advisory Committee to conduct an updated survey, with results to be reported to the community in spring 2020.
Jeff Pickering, IRCF president and CEO, has an optimistic outlook. “We live in a philanthropically minded community that believes in giving where you live,” he points out.
“According to data and information collected through The Chronicle of Philanthropy’s report ‘Giving in America,’ Indian River County households are some of the most generous in the country. As a percentage of household income, our community’s residents give almost twice the national average of 3% of household income. What’s even more significant is that these giving levels are consistent across household income levels. It
“You can talk about philanthropy, but it’s really important for the regular person to see it and to be mindful of the impact it makes in the community.”
– JEFF PICKERINGmakes you wonder what’s in the water here that makes people so generous.”
For some, generosity stems from a family tradition of giving; for others it’s a desire to support a cause or causes they are passionate about. A lifetime of giving back can begin with one small spark.
The spirit of giving often begins early. It has been proved that engaging children in civic-minded activities from a young age teaches them to appreciate what they have and to understand that they have the ability to help others. Something as simple as giving a tiny tot a quarter so he or she can stand on tippy-toe and put it into a Salvation Army red kettle during the holidays can make a huge difference.
Pickering can relate. “My dad was a mechanic, my mom was a nurse and our family life was centered around service to others. I was a lay missionary during college breaks. Giving and helping others is in my DNA. You can talk about philanthropy, but it’s really important for the regular person to see it and to be mindful of the impact it makes in the community.”
Last year alone, IRCF awarded grants totaling $10 million, including more than $500,000 in competitive

grants. Some of the recipients include the Boys & Girls Clubs of Indian River County, the Veterans Council of Indian River, Crossover Mission, Indian River Habitat for Humanity, Sunshine Physical Therapy and the Arc of Indian River County.
This year, the IRCF awarded $50,000 to the Laura (Riding) Jackson Foundation to help fund the relocation the poet’s 110-year-old Florida cracker house from the Environmental Learning Center to the Mueller Campus of Indian River State College,
allowing the nonprofit to continue promoting literary programs that foster a passion for the written word.
Another grant, in the amount of $100,000, was awarded to St. Francis Manor, a low-income senior community, in support of the nonprofit’s much-needed expansion program.
Those grants would not have been possible if it weren’t for generous souls like Kathy and Ron Edwards, who cite another advantage of giving through the IRCF. “A donor-advised fund at the Community Foundation allows us to make tax-advantaged contributions at one time and then use the account to support the different charities that are important to us throughout the year. We are very happy with how easy it has been.”
The Community Foundation partners with local attorneys, accountants, financial planners, brokers, insurance agents, estate planners and other advisors to help organize and carry out a client’s charitable giving during his or her lifetime as well as serving as a trusted steward of a client’s charitable estate.
Matthew Rundels, senior vice president/senior investment officer at Northern Trust, is one of those partners. Having been recruited by
“A donor-advised fund at the Community Foundation allows us to make taxadvantaged contributions at one time and then use the account to support the different charities that are important to us throughout the year.”

the financial institution two years ago, he not only fell in love with Vero Beach, he was eager to get involved in the community. A conversation with Scott Alexander, the bank’s senior managing director, led him to IRCF, where he met with Pickering.
“After spending time with Jeff and then a few of the board members, I could see that the Indian River Community Foundation understood what organizations and issues in this town are critical to the success of the community. I also saw it as the best opportunity for me to learn so that I could invest my time and experience to solutions that will make our community a better place,” says Rundels.
“Charitable giving can be very rewarding, but it can also be stressful when determining how to best allocate gifts. The Indian
River Community Foundation has the resources to help donors have confidence that their gifts will make the greatest impact.”
That’s what prompted Rundels to join IRCF’s board of directors. “At
Northern Trust, our business is to help families grow and preserve their wealth as well as plan for effective wealth transfer,” he points out.
“The vast majority of our clients are incredibly generous; their charitable donations make a positive impact on so many lives. I have seen more and more of them opting for a donor-advised fund as a means of executing their philanthropic goals, versus a private foundation. IRCF offers a streamlined donor-advised fund solution our clients know will help those close to home, right here in Indian River County, which is very important for the majority of them.”
Those words are music to Jeff Pickering’s ears. “At Indian River Community Foundation, it’s not about how much you’re giving — it’s about giving where you live and how we do it together.” ◆
“Setting up a donor-advised fund is really a simple process.”
– NEILL CURRIE
LIKE MANY OF US, LOUIS LAWSON landed in Vero Beach because of what he calls “a fluke.” While vacationing elsewhere in Florida, the longtime opera enthusiast was searching the internet and just happened to come across the Vero Beach Opera website. Curious, he clicked on it.
He was so impressed with what he saw and read about the nonprofit that presents professional performances featuring world-class opera stars such as Deborah Voigt and Marcello Giordani that he decided to meet artistic director Roman Ortega-Cowan and his wife, Joan, the organization’s president.
Their spirited, like-minded conversation was all it took for the retired insurance executive from Atlanta, who in his youth briefly pursued an
operatic career as a classical lyric baritone, to purchase a home on the barrier island.
Before he could blink twice, Lawson was a member of the board of directors and today serves as chair. He couldn’t be happier. “Joan was the one who corralled me into becoming chairman,” he chuckles.
Joan Ortega-Cowan also connected him with the Indian River Community Foundation, through which the Vero Beach Opera endowment fund is managed. Lawson smiles
as he recalls his initial meeting with Jeff Pickering, IRCF’s president and CEO, to discuss creating his own charitable legacy account that would benefit Vero Beach Opera.
Given his financial background and knowledge about estate planning, Lawson was pleased with the ease of setting one up. “Jeff and I talked, I told him what I wanted to do, then I left his office, took the elevator down to the first floor, and by the time I got in my car I had an email from him giving steps to accomplish what I wanted,” he says.
“Previously I had a donor-advised fund with one of the ‘big investment firms’ with an 800 number and everything seemed to take forever. Here I can call Jeff up and meet with him or anyone else at the foundation if I need something.”
What motivates people like Lawson to be so generous, prompting them to keep on giving to the causes they are passionate about through a planned gift from their estate?
That’s a question Lois Appleby, a member of the foundation’s Alma Lee Loy Legacy Society, has an answer for. During her successful career as a financial advisor with Merrill Lynch, she helped charitable organizations develop and promote planned giving opportunities.
Following her own advice, Appleby says, “As longtime Indian River County residents, my late husband, Frank, and I have always been extremely grateful for the multitude of opportunities and benefits of living in Vero Beach. It has always been our
hope to leave a gift that will help ensure that the community will continue to benefit and enrich the lives of generations to come.”
For the same reason, Alma Lee Loy, affectionately referred to as “The First Lady of Vero Beach,” agreed to have the Legacy Society bear her name when it was established in 2011. She knew the foundation would be a good steward of her desire to support the changing needs in a community she has lived in, loved and served after she is no longer here.
Ted and Dawn Michael established their legacy fund for the same “good steward” reason. They feel confident their philanthropic plans will be fully executed in perpetuity. “We wanted to replicate the giving we’re doing now to charities we support,” says Ted Michael. “The one thing I really like about the Community Foundation is that we have control about where our funds are going and we can give as much as we want.”
That’s important to Dawn Michael as well. A graduate of Gustavas Adolphas College in Minnesota, she has been giving back to her alma mater for years, thanks to a friendly reminder from the college shortly after her campus days were over. “You get into a plan for supporting one thing, then you start supporting other things that are important to you as well,” she says. She is also a longtime advocate of the Senior Resource Association, where she has served “off and on” as board chair and given her time as well as financial support.
Sandy and Randy Rolf are another couple that feel strongly about gifting beyond today. “Philanthropy is strong in this community and we believe in giving where you live. We trust the professionals at the Community Foundation for their guidance today and for their stewardship of our charitable legacy in the future.”
Jeff Pickering never ceases to be impressed with the number of generous individuals he meets and works with. “Clients think of us as a trusted member of their team. Our fee schedule is competitive and we work together with
local professional advisors like Todd Fennell, managing partner of Gould, Cooksey and Fennell, who lead the estate planning process.”
Fennell’s expertise with estate and tax planning strategies make him the perfect partner. The feeling is mutual. “Indian River Community Foundation is a trusted resource for people who want to make planned gifts from their estates to support the charitable causes they love forever,” says Fennell. “The Community Foundation’s team is extremely knowledgeable about philanthropy and delivers excellent service to our firm and our clients.”
Clients have another benefit, as Pickering points out: “They have two choices of how their funds are invested. They can choose their own local financial advisor or one of our pooled funds that are combined with the Greater Kansas City Community
Foundation, which handles all of our back-office administration.”
According to Pickering, “The future looks bright for local philanthropy.”
A 2015 report, “Transfer of Wealth in Indian River County,” estimates that at least $50 billion will be transferred between county households by the year 2060.

Pickering is hopeful about what this means for the sustainability of many of our community’s most important causes. “If just 5%, or $2.5 billion, was set aside in permanent endowments earmarked to benefit local charities, a 5% distribution from these endowments in 2060 would equal an annual payment of $125 million, enough to pay for the operations of nearly every charity in Indian River County. This represents the single largest untapped resource available to sustain our most important local causes.”
It’s those causes that will continue to enrich the future lives of so many. As Pickering notes, “You can talk about philanthropy, but it’s really important for people to see the difference generous individuals make in the community. They’re setting an example for the next generation.” ◆

The Fellsmere branch of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Indian River County has outgrown the “old school house” in which it has been conducting its after-school programs, and philanthropy has come to the rescue. Vero Beach residents
Larry and Karen Mulder have pledged $1 million toward a construction project, so instead of waiting years for the much-needed expansion, the club will soon have a new 8,000-square-foot building. That square footage translates into a major positive impact on the community.
Emma* is a teenager who was placed at the Hibiscus Village initially for a short stay before placement with a relative was arranged. When this arrangement did not work out and Emma was returned to the village, she was discouraged, unmotivated and depressed. She made comments such as, “I don’t care about my life” and “I don’t care about anything.” A Hibiscus mental health counselor began working with Emma immediately to address her issues.
At the same time, the treatment team, which includes house parents, an education liaison, the Career Pathways program director and administrators, sprang into action to help Emma through this challenging time. The sta engaged with Emma and encouraged her to participate in the programs and activities available to help motivate her to prepare for the future. The Hibiscus education liaison worked closely with Emma to help her enroll in a GED program, which she passed with flying colors. She also took part in the Career Pathways program as an intern at a local store.
As a result of the e orts of the caring sta and counselors guiding Emma, along with her own diligent hard work, she was able to obtain employment, apply for and receive grant funds and enroll in college to pursue a bachelor’s degree. Emma’s goal is to work toward a career as a paralegal. Despite the di culties and challenges Emma has faced as a result of the abuse and trauma she has endured, she has committed herself to building a stronger future. Hibiscus Children’s Center is very proud of Emma and her accomplishments!

After a devastating car crash left him paralyzed from the neck down, the past few years of Eugene’s life have been focused on healing and relearning to perform basic tasks such as standing, walking and moving. While this would be a large hurdle for anyone to overcome, Eugene and his family faced the added barrier of not having the financial resources to pay for the intensive treatment and tools necessary to reach those goals.
Eugene received physical and occupational therapy from the Visiting Nurse Association. In addition to paying for his care, the VNA & Hospice Foundation covered the cost of some of the equipment needed to accelerate Eugene’s progress. Having access to consistent therapy care has helped Eugene enormously. He has gained mobility and the strength to lift himself out of a chair and even walk again.
The VNA is the only local nonprofit home health care organization that has the ability to provide care for patients who lack the financial resources to cover its cost. Without the ongoing commitment of generous donors, patients like Eugene would not have access to care at a time in their lives when they need it most.
“It would be hard to put it on a scale because what they’re doing is working and is making a big difference,” Eugene says when asked what he would have done without the VNA and the donors who give in support of its mission.

“I started coming to the Women’s Refuge for counseling when I was 17 years old. I had severe depression and anxiety, and it was crippling my life. I felt so worthless. One day my counselor told me I didn’t have to live like this anymore.
“When I was invited to enter the Refuge residential program, I couldn’t believe what I saw God unfold in my life.
“My family and I received family counseling, and past hurts were healed and bridges of communication and trust were opened up again. My job blossomed into an opportunity to be close with a family who loved God and an avenue for God to work in my heart and open my eyes to a calling to continue to work with children with autism. I went from being nearly agoraphobic, barely able to handle the light of day, to being a woman in Christ who could maintain a full-time job while attending college and getting her degree.
“To say that my life has made a 180-degree turn would be an understatement. I’m experiencing a life that I never thought I would be able to have and joy I don’t think I could ever explain. For so long I was floundering and desperate for something, anything, to save me from depression and anxiety and brokenhearted hopelessness. Nothing seemed to do until I was called by God, and I praise Him and thank Him for creating this Refuge that I was able to run to, my church that has become a true family, and my family that raised me up in the Lord and gave me the foundation I could return to once I experienced the call of God.”

Daniel was a first responder at the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012. After that unspeakable tragedy, his life began to spiral out of control. He struggled with drug and alcohol addiction, post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental health issues. Eventually, he found himself homeless.
“Some of the motels I stayed in were horrible,” Daniel shares. “They had bedbugs, hookers banging on the door at night, drug addicts walking around all night and roaches everywhere. I was tired of being a drunk. I was tired of being a drug addict.”
Homeless and alone, Daniel knew the only way he would be able to regain his life would be with the support of others in a structured environment. That’s when he made the call to Camp Haven.
Camp Haven is the only shelter of its kind in Indian River County and the surrounding area, offering homeless men the opportunity to turn their lives around.
“Knowing I had somewhere to be and knowing I had somebody wondering where I was kept me from even thinking about getting into trouble. Camp Haven offered that help to get everything together, especially when you have nothing and nowhere to go.”
Today, Daniel is once more a full-time EMT/paramedic. He is saving money and supporting his children. “Camp Haven gave me back my life,” he says.
Daniel participated in Camp Haven’s pilot program for credit restoration and steps to home ownership, and, in May 2019, became a homeowner!
“Great news! After 40 years of addiction, I started my journey to success in a recovery home for women. I heard about STEP through friends of mine and signed up. When I started STEP, I was hopeless with no skills and no self-esteem. I had lost everything, even my soul.”
United Against Poverty’s Success Training for Employment Program is open to all adults who want to enhance their job readiness skills. In the first phase, participants spend six weeks in discussion-based classes on emotional intelligence, workplace skills and job acquisition, with a view to job placement and long-term job retention. After graduating, participants may either obtain employment or opt for placement in internships that allow them to develop additional job skills. Even after employment is obtained, participants continue to work with a success coach for up to three years to maximize job retention and career development.
Tammy continues, “STEP helped me to regain my confidence and learn many new skills. I was able to build my resume and become efficient at interviewing. I was also able to hone my computer skills, and I received credentials that helped me secure employment. I started working at United Against Poverty in their Member Share Grocery Program.
“I have now retained employment for over two years and as of this date I have gone full time at UP and look forward to advancing in my career path. Staying active with my success coach and using the skills I learned in STEP, I have been able to set goals and reach them. These goals include being selfsufficient and financially responsible. I have now obtained a vehicle and my own place to live. I continue moving UP, thanks to United Against Poverty and the STEP program.”

As Claire struggled with her memory, she was becoming increasingly withdrawn and despondent. It was simply not safe to leave her home alone.
“Finding SRA’s Adult Day Care program was an answer to prayer,” says Claire’s daughter and caregiver. “We had recently moved from Miami and I had considered multiple options for my mother. This place was the first to feel like home. The difference in my mom’s cognitive capabilities after less than a year in the program was miraculous.”
Claire now enjoys socializing again and is more physically active. She remembers her pets’ names and can discuss current events. And as her primary caregiver, her daughter has hope, peace of mind and daily respite.
Senior Resource Association has locations in both Vero Beach and Sebastian and is licensed by the Agency of Health Care Administration, including specialization in Alzheimer’s and dementia care. In addition to the Adult Day Care program, SRA offers inhome services, information and referrals, emergency home energy assistance, Meals on Wheels and even a choral group known as the Silver Tones!

THE ANNUAL GUIDE TO GIVING has been a part of Vero Beach Magazine's mission since its earliest days in the late 1990s. But this year is very special, marking a valuable partnership with the Indian River Community Foundation to produce the expanded and improved Guide to Better Giving.
If your organization was not included in this year’s guide, please send the following information to Frida Flores at frida@ircommunityfoundation.org so we can be sure to include
you next time. Also, remember to keep your Guidestar listing up to date at guidestar.org. We need your:
Organization Name
Phone Number
Website
Mission Statement
Main Event (Description, Date, Time, Place, Prices)
Volunteer Opportunities
Year Founded
Throughout the year, let Vero Beach Magazine know about your upcoming
nonprofit events and news by emailing mynews@verobeachmagazine.com. We promote upcoming events and news in the magazine and online. After an event, we help you thank participants and recognize sponsors by publishing your photos in our popular social section. With your permission, we will also post your event photos online.
On behalf of the Indian River Community Foundation and Vero Beach Magazine, we hope you enjoy the 2020 Guide To Better Giving! è
