CULTURED PEARLS

History, architecture and culture blend harmoniously with the Fifth Avenue South of today. By Laurel Meny 42nd Street

Nowhere in Naples is the spirit of the city more alive than on Fifth Avenue South. With its abundant shopping, dining and entertainment choices; eclectic mix of modern and historic architecture; lush, tropical foliage; and inviting parks and plazas, the Avenue is the destination of choice to live, work, shop, dine and play. By day, locals and visitors alike frequent an array of chic boutiques, charming sidewalk cafés 16 FIFTH AVENUE SOUTH

and renowned art galleries. By night, the enthusiasm is palpable with people clamoring for tables at the many fabulous restaurants, theaters abuzz with new performances and the tuneful sounds of live music along the street. Over the last 25 years, Fifth Avenue South has flourished and reinvented itself into the undisputed epicenter of entertainment in Southwest Florida. In the early 1990s, Naples-area business owners and

The Fox on the Fairway

civic leaders recognized the importance of a cohesive plan for this district and solicited the help of celebrated urban planner and architect Andrés Duany. Duany’s ultimate goal was not only to update the façade of Fifth Avenue South but also to enhance its overall ambiance. He did this by encouraging property owners and local officials to develop what has become an enviable cultural scene with a focus on arts and music.

Hello Dolly

Duany’s vision and Naples leaders’ willingness to act transformed an already fashionable street into Southwest Florida’s premier shopping, dining and performing arts destination. The cultural renaissance fully took root in 1997, when longtime Neapolitans Herbert and Peg Sugden made a generous donation and the Sugden Community Theatre opened its doors. The theatre, located on a public plaza in

the heart of Fifth, is home to The Naples Players, a first-class community theater troupe founded in 1953 by local residents. The Naples Players will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2013. Just off the Avenue at the edge of Cambier Park sits The von Liebig Art Center, home to the Naples Art Association. Taking its name from Suzanne and the late William J. von Liebig, noted cultural and medical research philanthropists, the center’s dynamic calendar of events features member and student exhibitions along with a number of temporary exhibits.

Also situated in Cambier Park in the city’s Norris Center is the Gulfshore Playhouse, Naples’ first professional theater company. Started in 2004, the ensemble attracts top talent from the Actors’ Equity Association to stage its productions. The organization’s six-show run this year is its biggest season to date and includes a number of Tony Award-winning plays. In keeping with Duany’s vision, the Avenue today is host to numerous festivals, entertainment and activities, creating a vibrant, social destination year-round. In 2010, business and community leaders formed the Fifth Avenue South Business Improvement District (BID) to foster and sustain continuous growth along the Avenue. Since its inception, the BID has implemented numerous successful initiatives to brand and promote the Avenue, including focused marketing, lighting
