Gem of Luxury and Legacy PROVIDENT JEWELRY HAS SHINED BRIGHTLY ON FIFTH AVENUE SOUTH FOR DECADES UNDER THE WATCHFUL EYE OF JARRED KAPLAN
“
EVERY DAY IS LIKE A TREASURE HUNT,” HE SAYS. “EVERYONE WANTS SOMETHING DIFFERENT.”
For 30 years, Provident Jewelry has earned a platinum reputation for specializing in sought-after timepieces, modern and custom designs, estate treasures, and rare gems. Jarred Kaplan has played a big role in its success as a managing partner since 1994, a year after it was founded. Today, Kaplan oversees the company’s boutiques in Fort Myers and Naples, which boasts a 5,000-square-foot showroom and offices on Fifth Avenue South. Kaplan earned his bachelor’s degree in music performance from The New School in New York City before joining Provident Jewelry, but his new-found passion for all that glitters led him to become a Gemological Institute of America Graduate Gemologist. “This is a unique business,” he says. “You deal with one-ofa-kind things that bring happiness to people’s lives. Every day is like a treasure hunt. You never know who will walk in the door or what they will have. And everyone wants something different.” On Florida’s east coast, Provident Jewelry also has showrooms in West Palm Beach, Jupiter, Palm Beach, and Wellington. The company began as a diamond wholesaler in Miami in 1993 and acquired its first store the following year. “We had good success,” he recalls. In 1999, Kaplan hurricane-evacuated to Naples—a fortuitous
event that led to their expansion into Southwest Florida. Today the company offers items such as $5 million blue diamonds and a 100-carat, $20 million loose diamond, in addition to worldclass watches from Cartier, Breitling, and Bulgari, and contemporary jewelry designs from Pomellato, Gucci, and Buccellati. Three years ago, Provident Jewelry expanded the Naples boutique to create a stunning showroom with an intimate environment and space for private consultations. It also has a bar that provides champagne for a relaxed shopping experience during Friday happy hour. Kaplan travels the United States purchasing estates and overseas to visit vendors. Kaplan and his wife Melissa, who served as marketing director for Provident Jewelry for a decade, have three daughters: Kate, Emily, and Annie. Kaplan serves on the Fifth Avenue South Business Improvement District (BID) board of directors. He says he feels honored to be part of the community that the BID has transformed into a bustling international destination. “I’ve traveled throughout the world, and I rarely come across people who are as kind and easy to work with, whether in business or socially,” he says. “People love to walk Fifth Avenue because it’s close to shopping, dining, and the beach. Fifth Avenue brings them in.”

Hat Couture MARILYN HELLMAN’S EMPORIUM BRINGS EUROPEAN CLASS TO THE HEART OF NAPLES
Marilyn Hellman wants you to look and feel smashing, no matter where you’re headed—and she’s sure to succeed. Her eponymous clothing and hat emporium, Marilyn’s, has been a Fifth Avenue South mainstay since she founded it in 2009 following a successful career in corporate America. Her bespoke boutique expanded from shoes and accessories to include luxury, private label clothing and an extensive collection of hats—some 300 to 500. Each year, she travels to Milan, Paris, London, Belgium, and Spain to visit her clothes, shoe, and hat designers and manufacturers. Some of Hellman’s designs are printed on high-quality cotton from Turkey and silks and linen from Italy. “We’re doing so much,” she says, in awe of how her innate passion has evolved into a proprietary success story. “This just happened—I didn’t dream I would be going to Europe,” she muses. Hellman majored in art before working for 28 years for Xerox in the Northeast. Her corporate background “gave me the polish to do business the way I do now,” she says. “I run Marilyn’s like a corporate business.” Her interest in clothes and fashion was inspired by her mother Hilda, who opened a consignment shop in Minneapolis in the
1950s. At 94, Hilda was by her daughter’s side, providing sage advice, when she opened Marilyn’s. Hellman added chapeaus to her inventory after looking for a hat to wear to a local fundraising event and Kentucky Derby gatherings. “I couldn’t find one, so I said, ‘I think there’s a market,’” she recalls. She ordered 150 hats from high-end designers. “Not only did I sell all of those hats, I got more in and sold them,” she recalls. “Now, everyone knows about our hats.” Her designers accommodate orders for custom hats and accessories such as personalized leather belts and handbags. She says it’s not uncommon for three generations to come into the shop together. “I’m eclectic and buy what I want—and it fits several different tastes,” she explains. Hellman offers free tailoring and says her goal is to help her customers look—and feel—their best. “If you look put-together with items that you enjoy wearing and feel comfortable, then you’ll have a smile on your face and everyone around you will pick up on that energy.” Hellman says building her couture, 2,000-square-foot boutique was made possible by her self-confidence. “I didn’t know you’re supposed to be afraid,” she says. “I haven’t been afraid of anything.” 5TH AVENUE SOUTH 29

Into the Wild ROSS PARKER SHARES HIS LOVE OF THE AFRICAN BUSH WITH FINE ART COLLECTORS
South African native Ross Parker was born in Zimbabwe into an artistic family, so it was a natural fit when he founded the beginnings of Native Visions Galleries 36 years ago to share African and environmentally themed art with American collectors. His path to success began after graduating high school and serving in the Rhodesian Army Special Forces during the Rhodesian Bush War. In 1981, a year after Robert Mugabe became Zimbabwe’s prime minister, Parker fled to the United States because “I didn’t anticipate a very good future,” he recalls. “It was the best decision I ever made.” Parker became an art agent in 1986, representing the wildlife paintings of a wounded military vet he had served with and a couple of other artists and sculptors. Their works were sold in galleries in San Francisco and Hawaii, but as Parker’s pool of artists grew, he decided to open a gallery in Florida. With two Native Visions Galleries—in Palm Beach Gardens on Florida’s east coast and on Naples’ Fifth Avenue South—some of Parker’s artists and employees have been with him for decades. His wife Kirsten serves as gallery director and their sons, Ross II and Cole, as fine art consultants. “It’s a family business,” he proudly notes. “My employees are my family.” Today, Native Visions represents 23 artists’ fine art paintings, sculptures, glass work, and carvings, which have been featured on the covers of more than 1,000 magazines, including Christie’s and Sotheby’s auction magazines. His artists generally produce about only 30 to 40 pieces a year because “it takes time to create anatomical value and depth in landscape, and you must be patient, adventurous, and have a great understanding of the outdoors,” says Parker. “In other words, you can’t bring a bull elephant into a studio. You must go to him.” Collectors have the opportunity to go on exclusive African “art safaris” with select artists. The excursions are for three couples, plus the artist and a gallery representative. The group stays 10 days in the African bush, where they experience wildlife encounters and can commission the artist to recreate those experiences. “They become heirloom paintings,” says Parker. Native Visions actively supports local, national, and international nonprofits focused on combat-wounded veterans, children, and wildlife and environmental conservation, including Shy Wolf Sanctuary, Conservancy of Southwest Florida, and Safari Club International. 5TH AVENUE SOUTH 31

BY THE NUMBERS 1876 Brothers John and Madison Weeks establish a fish camp on the northern edge of Gordon Pass, becoming the first permanent residents.
In the 1920s, the intersection of Fifth Avenue South and Ninth Street South, the city’s first commercial hub, was called the “Four Corners.” By 1948, the intersection necessitated the city’s first traffic light.
1886 The Naples Town Improvement Company is founded to create a resort town along the remote shores of the Gulf of Mexico. 1923 The Town of Naples is founded. Ed Frank’s garage becomes the first commercial building on Fifth Avenue South. 1928 The last link of the Tamiami Trail from Naples to Miami is completed, opening a true Tampa-toMiami connection. 1933 Naples’ first airport with a dirt landing strip opens on the south side of Fifth Avenue South. 1949 The City of Naples is incorporated. Its first bank, The Bank of Naples, opens on the avenue. Construction is underway on Cambier Park.
