BE A LEADER. MAKE A DIFFERENCE. FOR BROWARD. BE BOLD. Larry Feuer wants to be remembered as someone who gave back to his community. He says, “The status quo is unacceptable. We have to BE BOLD to address problems that will happen decades from now.” That’s why Larry is using his estate plan to create an endowed charitable fund at the Community Foundation of Broward. He wants to impact a wide range of causes, including assistance to Broward’s LGBTQ+ community, which the Community Foundation has directly supported for more than 35 years. Thanks to generous donors like Larry, the Foundation has provided over $9 million towards LGBTQ+ issues so far. Larry is proud to have locked in a legacy that makes a difference in the place he calls home. “The Community Foundation of Broward ensures that I’ll be remembered as someone who helped people and created a better Broward for everyone.” Underwriting support generously provided by:

Power TRIP
l CAPEHART
Ask veteran race car driver Hélio Castroneves (who appears on our cover this month) about power, and he’ll have a thing or two to tell you about the technical gear and gadgets you need under your hood to win a race. Engine power notwithstanding, real power has nothing to do with title, money, or force. That’s why we’re dedicating this issue to all kinds of power—the kind that Castroneves hopes will carry him across the finish line first, but also the kind that transforms and transports us as individuals and as a community. Consider the power of Fort Lauderdale residents coming together this month to end food insecurity at Feeding South Florida’s Outrun Hunger event, and to raise awareness and funds to prevent drunk driving at the Walk Like MADD and MADD Dash. Find out more about these “Races Worth Supporting” on page 18. At 6 foot 3 inches tall, Laudy-raised volleyball pro (and three-time Olympic medalist) Foluke Akinradewo Gunderson cuts a powerful figure on and off the court. Read about her remarkable career in “Power Player” on page 22. If the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that there is power in taking time off to enjoy leisurely pursuits. If a day on the water transports you to your own personal happy place like most Laudy locals, then feast your eyes on “The Cool Cats” on page 50, for the lowdown on 10 of our favorite twin-hulled power catamarans on the market today. With so many troubling pieces of news showing up in our feeds lately, it can be easy to feel powerless. But sometimes the smallest choices can give us a chance to be part of the solution. Since Earth Day is upon us this month, we’re sharing eight simple “Sustainable Swaps” on page 20 that not only honor the environment, but give meaning and power to our daily choices. Perhaps the phrase is overused these days, but it is true that we’re all in this together. May you find power and peace in our pages this month.

TRENDING
SPRING Refresh
Three design trends to include in your home THIS SEASON Interior design trends come and go, but one designer at the forefront of it all is Alene Workman, who owns her namesake design firm in Fort Lauderdale. She’s designed countless homes in South Florida since 1991 and says her and her team’s work is “always ahead of the curve.” Below, Workman shares three trends she believes will be big this spring—and beyond. (awidesign.com)
l
16
RELAXED INTERIORS “There is a movement today to an interior that is relaxed, warmer, and cozier, that bridges contemporary/ transitional elements and can be applied to enhance the home’s background elements,” she says. “This may mean a very clean-lined home that now includes some crown molding, or wall moldings offering a more layered, relaxed, and comfortable, contemporary background.” l
1
l SOFTER NEUTRALS “Homeowners are wanting softer and warmer toned neutrals and are moving away from the cool grays or stark white,” says Workman. “Clients want a more pleasing palette with soft whites mixed with taupe or neutral beige/gray, and pale, warm-toned grays/greens softening the overall background. The soft neutrals combined with many metals and other accent colors enhance these warmer neutrals.”
3
DUAL-PURPOSE SPACES “We’re seeing a trend for multipurpose-room living, as home tasks can incorporate offices, small meeting centers, or group relaxation spaces even for family gatherings,” says Workman.

« WALK LIKE MADD & MADD DASH FORT LAUDERDALE 5K
This year’s Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K, led by Heather Geronemus, will take place on April 24 at Huizenga Plaza.
Heather Geronemus’ life changed forever after her father was killed by a drunk driver while he was crossing a street in 2009. But when a Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) victim advocate named Nancy reached out and offered support and resources, Geronemus let the call go to voicemail—and she didn’t listen to the message until several months later. When the pair finally connected, they talked for more than an hour, and Nancy provided support during Geronemus’ court proceedings. “Nancy was with me every step of the way,” recalls Geronemus, who is the past chair of the national board of directors for MADD. “I was so taken aback by the help I received that I wanted to do something, but I didn’t just want to help other victims. I wanted to prevent these things from happening [in the future].”
« FEEDING SOUTH FLORIDA’S OUTRUN HUNGER
Growing up in a Latin family, Paco Velez says food was always a part of his culture. “Food really was able to bring people together, whether it was just around the dinner table at night to share our experiences, or it was the holidays [when] family and friends [would] come over to enjoy food and fellowship,” he says. He is now celebrating 10 years as the president and CEO of Feeding South Florida (FSF)—the region’s leading domestic hunger-relief organization— and he says it’s a privilege to be able to serve people who are experiencing food insecurity. FSF provides services ranging from food distribution and after-school snacks, to a
18
Geronemus founded the Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K in 2011— an event where people can gather to help prevent the kind of tragedy her family faced. Since its inception, the event has raised more than $3 million for victim services, prevention education programming, and more. Most recently, the organization helped pass the “Advanced Impaired Driving Technology” component of the federal infrastructure bill, which requires new cars to come equipped with technology that can detect and prevent drunk driving. This year’s event will take place on April 24 at Huizenga Plaza in Fort Lauderdale, welcoming the community to solve what Geronemus calls a “100 percent preventable crime.” “Only with the power of the whole community can we end drunk driving,” she says. (walklikemadd.org)
culinary training program and a community kitchen that prepares food for homebound individuals. Most recently, the organization launched its Mobile Farmacy—an airconditioned mobile grocery store offering donated food and farmers market items, plus an educational unit. Thanks to many South Florida donors and volunteers, FSF distributed 183 million pounds of food between March 2020 and February 2021. Those looking to help support the organization further can take part in Feeding South Florida’s annual Outrun Hunger event, taking place on April 2 at Charnow Park in Hollywood Beach. Guests are invited to walk or run while networking with others who support the mission of FSF. (feedingsouthflorida.org)

layers jump to block Foluke Akinradewo Gunderson at the net, but rarely do they succeed. You can spot the disappointment of defeat in an opponent’s face as Gunderson effortlessly offsets a spike past all countermeasures. Watch her play as a middle blocker with Japan’s Hisamitsu Springs professional volleyball team, and you begin to wonder if she’s subject to the same natural laws that apply to the rest of us. In many ways, Gunderson is larger than life; at 6 foot 3 inches, she towers over most of the other players on her team. But volleyball wasn’t Gunderson’s first sport. As a freshman at St. Thomas Aquinas High School, she ran track and played basketball until coach Lisa Zielinski persuaded her to work the net for the Raiders. Gunderson led the team to a state volleyball title during her senior year. “I was fortunate enough to be surrounded by great coaches and fantastic teammates who showed me the ropes,” she says.
Now living in Japan and playing volleyball professionally, Gunderson’s prolific career continues—despite being worlds away from home and the only American on the Hisamitsu Springs squad. “My husband and son are with me, so I have some semblance of a normal life,” she says, noting that she relies on the help of an interpreter to ease communications with her Japanesespeaking teammates. Gunderson says she never dreamed her career would be so successful—or so long. “I never set out to have a long career in volleyball,” she admits. “I didn’t even know the professional world existed when I started.” At 34 years old, she’s still got her head in the game. But she is also mindful that someday her life on the court will come to a close. “I’m not exactly sure what I want to do once I finish my career, but I do know that I want to do something in medicine,” Gunderson says. She adds that she’ll build upon the knowledge and degree she earned at Stanford, which inducted her into its hall of fame in 2019. But for now, it’s all volleyball, all the time. “I think what’s helped me the most is the fact that I never looked too far ahead,” she says. “I’ve kept my head down, put in the hard work, dreamed big, and tried to treat others the way I would want to be treated. And above all, I’ve been blessed.” «
Colleges took notice—Stanford specifically, where Gunderson played for four years. She graduated in 2009 with a degree in human biology and an impressive volleyball record, finishing with the best career hitting efficiency of any NCAA Division I player. Then, Team USA came knocking. As an Olympian, Gunderson became something of an alchemist, taking a 2012 silver medal and a 2016 bronze medal for the United States and turning it into gold at the 2020 Olympics.

Not all fine dining requires linen. The best meal you’ve ever enjoyed probably had as much to do with the place and the people as the food. Some of our grandest affairs have no crystal, silver or white gloves. But there are oyster knives, hot sauce and views like this. Here in the Lowcountry, luxury isn’t always defined by starched cotton and silver.

VIKING RIVER CRUISES
Scenes from Viking’s “River of Gold” cruise, clockwise from above: The city of Porto; steep hills along the Douro River; the Tower of Belém; the Jerónimos Monastery.
As international travel and cruising slowly reenter the realm of normal, a wide world of river cruises awaits—and one country inviting exploration by water is Portugal. In the years before the pandemic, Viking River Cruises unveiled the Helgrim, one of its baby Longships built to traverse Portugal’s Douro River and navigate its five narrow locks within a 10-day “River of Gold” itinerary. These 262-foot ships are more intimate than Viking’s famed Longships, with 53 staterooms that accommodate just 106 guests. The rooftop pool is a highlight, as is the Aquavit Terrace on the ship’s bow that makes for a convivial alfresco gathering place. A 36-person crew creates a luxury experience with attentive service, informative guides, and enhanced amenities. Viking’s promise to be “the thinking person’s cruise” is in full effect on its “River of Gold” vacation, which starts with two full days in Lisbon. Guests will see the Tower of Belém and enjoy guided tours of the Jerónimos Monastery and the Maritime Museum, where Portugal’s powerful trade history is brought to life with original Indian 34
spices, maps, navigation tools, sunken treasure, and intricately carved royal ships. Walking tours also venture deep into colorful neighborhoods, with stops at tucked-away restaurants for local fare and ever-present Port wine. Lisbon is one of Europe’s most elegant metropolises. Its inlaid stone sidewalks, hand-painted building tiles, and yellow cable cars that climb its eight steep hills create a romantic ambience rarely expressed in capital cities. The second weekend of every month—as well as the fourth weekend from May to October—artisans, cobblers, and antique dealers ply their trades under a canopy of trees on Avenida de Liberdade, the city’s main street directly outside the Tivoli hotel. After your time in Lisbon, you’ll travel to Porto, Portugal’s second largest city and the birthplace of the country’s signature wine. This is also where you’ll officially board the ship at the dock at Vila Nova de Gaia. Here—and daily—Viking passengers must make difficult choices about tours, as each is carefully selected to appeal to outdoor enthusiasts, historians, gastronomes, and curious travelers. Those who embark on the roughly 3.5-mile Porto City Hike will come across medieval streets originally settled by the Romans, stone homes and restaurants built in the seventeenth century, and the Church of Saint Francis with its magnificently gilded interiors. History, food, and Port dominate this Douro Valley sojourn, the only region in the world in which Port is made. Apple, orange, almond, and olive groves decorate the hillsides, and the scent of vineyards and Port cellars permeates the air. Grape harvests run from September 15 to October 15, when travelers can visit grand estates and participate in picking, stomping, and fermenting. Outside of the harvest season, Viking guests can instead head to a nineteenth-century estate

to partake in a private Port-blending class. Warning: Math is involved. A local sommelier sets up a tabletop lab within the family villa, where you will create a 750-ml bottle of Tawny Port by blending just the right amount of five-, 10-, and 20-year Ports. As you mix, a memorable science project unfolds, with the serenade of a fountain, the aromas of bougainvillea, and the backdrop of gardens, vineyards, and stone steps setting a fairy-tale scene. Cultural immersion is at the forefront of any Viking river cruise, and one of the most extraordinary tours offered to passengers is in Favaios. An excursion to this tiny village is available on the Pinhão leg of the cruise and includes a breadmaking demonstration, with bakers making their loaves in ovens heated with wood and grapevines. You’ll also visit the Bread and Wine Museum and have lunch at the Quinta da Avessada wine estate. If it sounds like you’re on the move with this trip, you are. rolling hills, verdant vineyards, and grand estates glide by, only one day is reserved for scenic river cruising. The country’s law dictates that no ships can ply the Douro at night, thus the Helgrim and others dock every evening in another sleepy town. Late-dusk strolls through quiet hamlets lead to sunset views, hauntingly beautiful abandoned train stations, and unexpected invitations from locals hollering from tiny bodegas. Back on board, regional tasting menus ac-
company classic culinary offerings. Diners can expect dishes such as a traditional Portuguese stew known as cataplana, the famed jamón ibérico, and desserts like pastel de nata, an egg custard tart. Service is on par with any Michelinstar restaurant, and open seating allows guests to change up dinner partners. Nightly sommelier recommendations include a revolving selection of the region’s best wines—with Port flowing freely and crew, guests, and local performers engaging in the evening’s entertainment. While the pandemic has made traveling abroad and by boat somewhat unpredictable,
Viking River Cruises has taken precautions to help ensure the safety and health of its passengers and crew, including COVID-19 vaccination requirements, noninvasive saliva PCR tests, new air purification technology, and complimentary PCR testing before outbound flights, if needed. Prior to your cruise, visit Viking’s website for the most up-to-date protocols. Travel has undeniably changed, but smallship cruising within a bubble of luxury and safety checks grants more personalization and bigger adventures. And this is one trip to put on your bucket list. Today’s TAMPA
The five-star JW Marriott Tampa Water Street reflects the city’s evolution By Mary Murray If you haven’t been to downtown Tampa in a while, there are a lot of new experiences, places, bites, and sights in store. The city is experiencing a renaissance of sorts, propelled in part by its championshipwinning sports teams and an infusion of millennials planting roots and raising families in the area. Leading the way is the Tampa Riverwalk and Channel District. Here, next door to the Amalie Arena, you’ll find the new JW Marriott Tampa Water Street, a sleek addition to the skyline that acts as a chic second home for travelers and locals alike. From top to bottom, this property combines sophisticated surrounds with an inviting atmosphere inclusive of restaurants, amenities, and unique accommodations. A standout offering among the hotel’s 519 rooms and suites are the Stay Well rooms, which boast elements geared toward improving well-being, such as advanced air-purification systems and circadian lighting. Head to the sixth floor to continue this wellness trajectory at the Spa by JW and the rooftop pool and lounge area. Spend the day in a poolside cabana, escaping to the adjacent Six restaurant for a light lunch or evening cocktails overlooking Tampa. When hunger hits, you can also venture over to the JW Marriott Tampa Water Street’s sister Marriott property to dine on the Garrison Channel at Anchor & Brine, which specializes in what Matthew Brennan, the resort’s executive chef, describes as coastal Florida cuisine with a Latin influence. Sense of place and seasonality play a role across many of the on-site restaurant concepts, with Brennan sourcing local lettuces from Brick Street Farms in St. Petersburg and tomatoes from The Villages Grown. But perhaps no space exudes the essence of Water Street quite like the JW Marriot’s lobby area. Here, mid-century modern decor and soaring design elements cradle communal gathering spots. Sip on a nightcap at the Driftlight Lounge bar or savor a morning pastry by chef Natalia Meshalkina at the JW Market coffee house. 38
Scenes from the JW Marriott Tampa Water Street, clockwise from top left: Rooftop pool; lobby lounge; interior of Driftlight restaurant; cocktail at Six.
Anchoring it all is Driftlight, the JW Marriott’s signature restaurant. The scene is Mad Men meets twenty-first-century urban cool, with wraparound booths that invite intimate conversation. Start the day with a breakfast of chicken sausage hash, acai bowls, or lemon poppy seed pancakes that are bright, light, and just the right amount of sweet. Come evening, Driftlight transforms into an upscale steak house with a Florida twist. Sous chef Dylan Rebuck has taken the reins of the restaurant’s dryaging program, which enhances a menu dotted with Floridian ingredients like grouper and Latin touches including a chimichurri steak sauce. Driftlight captures the essence of the hotel as a whole— a hip hangout for discerning travelers who enjoy the finer things in life but don’t sweat the small stuff. Whether it be for dinner, a spa treatment, or the entire weekend, a visit to the JW Marriott Tampa Water Street is much like the city itself: up-andcoming, carefree, and a whole lot of fun. hat’s old is new again—and then some—at The Boca Raton. Formerly The Boca Raton Resort & Club, the property has embraced its original name and, with it, a return to the type of bespoke luxury that made it a coveted destination in the first half of the twentieth century. As it prepares to celebrate its hundredth birthday later this decade, The Boca Raton is unveiling a $175 million phase one transformation inclusive of refreshed accommodations, must-visit restaurants, and exciting gathering spaces that
40
are sure to amplify the resort’s glamorous reputation. Top among these new spaces is the reimagined Cloister, where renovations have struck a balance between honoring architect Addison Mizner’s vision and creating cool hangouts worthy of the twenty-first-century jet-setter. The Mizner Lounge, for example, is anchored by a historic fireplace, while the building itself has been repainted in the same white hue it donned in 1926. Over at MB Supper Club, diners are transported to the 1930s and ’40s, complete with live entertainment, vintage dishware, and monkey motifs galore— because every Mizner property must have a reference or two to good ole Johnnie Brown. MB Supper Club is just one of the more than half-dozen new dining concepts at The Boca Raton, many of which are collaborations with New York–based Major Food Group. Leading the charge are Marisol at The Boca Raton Beach Club and The Flamingo Grill, which opened over the summer and offers a retroredux take on the American chophouse experience. Amid a chic convivial setting, patrons can sample filet mignon, Cajun snapper, Mon-
tauk Pearl oysters, and fried-to-perfection onion rings that are worth the trip to Boca alone. Additional openings at the Cloister include modern Japanese and Italian eateries as well as the lakefront Palm Court cocktail lounge and Sadelle’s, a Major Food Group brunching hot spot with roots in NYC. When it comes to new accommodations, the biggest makeover is taking place at the Tower, where the acclaimed Rockwell Group has brought artistic touches to the 225 suites. Updated suites are also available at the Bungalows and the adults-only Yacht Club, which boasts personal concierges and floor valets. Perhaps the most see-and-be-seen addition at The Boca Raton is the Harborside Pool Club. Here, hotel guests and club members can take a dip at one of four pools, engage in retail therapy at on-site boutiques, or lounge the day away in a private cabana. Kids are privy to their own club, as well as two massive water slides and a 450-foot lazy river. All of this—and even more—adds up to a new era of excellence for The Boca Raton. While retaining a reverence for the past, the resort is catering to next-gen luxury travelers, those who know that where you stay is just as important as where you go. (thebocaraton.com) «

BMW’s sensational 612-hp Alpina B8 Gran Coupe offers the ultimate in sophisticated performance By Howard Walker BMW design has become a little, shall we say, eccentric as of late. It seems each model is all swollen kidney grilles, creased and crumpled bodywork, and cartoonish proportions. Case in point: the all-new iX electric sport-ute, which looks like it came from the Etch A Sketch of some sugared-up 4-year-old. But there’s one design masterpiece in the burgeoning BMW lineup that never fails to spin heads and deliver endless oohhs and aahhs: the stunning 8 Series Gran Coupe. This sensuous four-door fastback—with its low-slung bulldog stance, raked-back windshield, and swoopy roofline—is one of the most gorgeous automobiles money can buy. Want to increase the appeal of the 8 Series Gran Coupe even further and ensure you become part of an ultra-exclusive group of owners? Then opt for the Alpina version. Alpina is BMW’s performance division—kind of like Mercedes’ AMG setup but on a much smaller scale. Around 1,700 Alpinas are produced each year, split between the 7 Series–based B7, the honking X7-based XB7, and the B8 Gran Coupe. Alpina develops all three models, which BMW then builds and sells exclusively in the United States, backed by a 42
full BMW warranty. Of that 1,700, fewer than 400 find their way to the States. This latest 612-horsepower $140,000 Alpina B8 Gran Coupe is the purest of the three. Without a doubt, it is the most coveted performance BMW in production. Yes, there’s a 617-horsepower M8 Competition Gran Coupe that’s faster, more hardcore, and around $10,000 cheaper. But what the Alpina delivers is staggering performance paired with true luxury, refinement, and exclusivity. See it out on the street and the B8 is instantly recognizable, with those trademark 20-spoke, 21-inch Alpina alloys wrapped in custom Pirelli rubber. They demand just about as much attention as the bright, cobalt-blue brake calipers ready to clamp down on rotors the size of XXL pizzas. Bodywork updates include a reworked front bumper with bigger, air-gulping intakes and a new lower apron sporting that distinctive Alpina script. At the rear, there’s a sleek decklid spoiler and a quartet

Coupe so special. While it’s the same twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 used in the standard 850i Gran Coupe, Alpina ups the horsepower to 612. More importantly, max torque increases to a mighty 590 pound-feet. That’s 37 lb-ft more than the trackfocused M8 Competition Coupe packs. The B8 is quick—as in standstill to 60 in 3.3 seconds, with forward motion not ceasing until the speedo needle is showing 201 mph. Coupled to an Alpina-programmed 8-speed ZF automatic, shifts are lightning fast and lightswitch responsive. But the quirky buttons instead of the stock BMW paddle shifters are just plain silly and an example of change for the sake of change. Back on the plus side, Alpina’s tuning wizards scattered their pixie dust all over the stock suspension, active anti-roll bars, xDrive allwheel drive, and rear-wheel steering to ensure the B8 corners like it’s running on invisible rails. But what truly sets the car apart is the stellar quality of its ride. Whereas the M8 Competition Gran Coupe will chatter teeth and jiggle eyeballs, the Alpina soaks up lumps and bumps with astonishing alacrity. Performance with refinement. What a concept. «

HÉLIO CASTRONEVES IS BANKING ON HAVING ENOUGH LEFT IN THE TANK FOR A RECORD-BREAKING FIFTH WIN AT THIS YEAR’S INDIANAPOLIS 500
BY KRISTEN DESMOND LEFEVRE PHOTOGRAPHY BY VANESSA ROGERS
Shot on location at Room 901 in the Hyatt Centric Las Olas (roomnine01.com)
Watching driver Hélio Castroneves win a race—and he’s won 31 IndyCar series races over his 21-year career—is like seeing joy personified. After crossing the finish line first at 200 miles per hour (or more), Castroneves does something utterly unique: He leaves his car and climbs the fence to celebrate with fans. “The fans love to share your emotions,” he says, “and my blood’s bubbling all the time.” For Castroneves—who’s earned the nickname “Spider-Man” for those fenceclimbing feats—every win makes his blood bubble (consider his recent win at this year’s 24 Hours of Daytona). But some wins are sweeter than others. And for Castroneves—who has called Fort Lauderdale home since 2009—the Indianapolis 500 is the sweetest of them all. The Brickyard, as the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is affectionately known, is hallowed ground for race fans—Castro-
neves included. “I always call that place magical,” he says. “And it is. No question.” To date, he’s won a record-tying four races in that special place. Next in his sights: No. 5. And for Castroneves, the question is not if, but when. HITTING THE ROAD Castroneves’ love of racing began at the feet of his father, who owned a stock car team in their native São Paulo, Brazil. When Castroneves was 5 years old, his dad would smuggle him—wearing a custom fire suit and helmet—onto the pit lane. “The noise of the engines, the smell of the oil,” he recalls. “From that moment, I knew I would be a race car driver.” Castroneves received his first go-kart at age 11 and later rose through racing’s ranks— first in Brazil, then in Europe. After moving to the U.S., he landed a spot with Team Penske in 2000. His FORTLAUDERDALEILLUSTRATED.COM | APRIL 2022

second IndyCar start was at the 2001 Indianapolis 500, a race known for eating rookies alive. That year, Castroneves sat on the starting grid in eleventh position, knowing that only eight rookies in the race’s then-85-year history had pulled off a victory. But odds don’t faze Castroneves, who led the final 52 laps of the 200-lap race to win his first Indianapolis 500. “I always have winning in mind,” he says. “If you’re going into a fight, you can’t be thinking, ‘Maybe I’ll lose today, but hopefully I’ll win in the future.’ No! I’m always competitive, no matter the odds.” Castroneves is admittedly not one to rest on the laurels of winning one Indianapolis 500. So when he returned to Brickyard in 2002, he did something that hadn’t been done since the 1970s: winning the race in back-to-back years. Even now, after 105 runnings, it’s a feat that only four Indy 500 drivers have achieved. But there were naysayers. With only one-and-a-half laps to go, two cars collided, and the race was yellow-flagged (preventing drivers from advancing their positions). Unaware that the yellow flag had been waved, Paul Tracy overtook Castroneves for the lead—but officials disqualified the pass. Controversial? Yes. But a win, nevertheless. 46

“OVER ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF THAT RACE, AND ONLY FOUR OF US WERE ABLE TO WIN IT FOUR TIMES.” —HÉLIO CASTRONEVES “That year was tough,” Castroneves recalls. “I remember thinking, ‘I know what to do and I need to do it exactly the same.’ But the race did not go exactly the same. I was a lap down. And all of a sudden, I had one opportunity to gamble, and it paid it off. So that’s why I say that racetrack is magical. Some days it picks who’s gonna be the winner. And that day surely was like that.” For the second straight year, Castroneves climbed the fence, kissed the bricks, drank the milk, and donned the orchid-laden wreath with Team Penske solidly behind him in Victory Circle. And then the magic disappeared: a sevenyear drought ensued. In 2009, Castroneves pulled off a stunning pole-to-pole finish for win No. 3 at Indianapolis. But by 2018, his racing schedule was reduced. His 21-year run with Team Penske had come to a close. TEAMING UP Without Penske, Castroneves needed to find a ride. Enter Mike Shank, owner of Meyer Shank racing, who was looking for a new driver. He says Castroneves’ experience and enthusiasm won him over. “Hélio is Hélio and there’s no other way to say it,” Shank says. “He has so much knowledge about IndyCar. That’s invaluable and something that has…really brought us to a whole new level in the sport.” In 2021, Castroneves signed with Meyer Shank Racing to a part-time schedule that included the Indianapolis 500. Castroneves had already beaten a lot of odds in his career. But these new odds were daunting: No driver had ever won the Indianapolis 500 backed by different teams. Still, Castroneves was hungry for Indy 500 win No. 4 in 2021. In a late-race pass on Alex Palou, he clinched the victory, tying the all-time Indy 500 record with three of the greatest names in racing: A.J. Foyt, Al Unser Sr., and Rick Mears (who was Castroneves’ longtime mentor at Team Penske). Castroneves refers to them as “the gods of racing” and says he’s beyond honored to stand in their midst. “Over one hundred years of that race,” he says, “and only four of us were able to win it four times.”
DANCING AWAY Landing among the racing gods isn’t the only thing Castroneves is known for. After a chance encounter with Olympic speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno (winner of the fourth season of ABC's Dancing with the Stars), Castroneves was tapped to participate in the show’s fifth season. He’d never danced before, but Castroneves wowed the judges with partner Julianne Hough—sambaing, mamboing, and rumbaing their way to win the coveted Mirrorball trophy. “I worked as hard in three months as I worked in my entire life in racing,” he recalls. “But I’ve retired my dance shoes now. I love my Mirrorball trophy, but I like the Borg Warner trophy more,” he says of the iconic Indianapolis 500 award. “That’s why I have four.”
Castroneves shows his less serious side at the bar at Room 901, a private speakeasy inside Fort Lauderdale’s Hyatt Centric Las Olas.

STILL CLIMBING If Castroneves can pull off a fifth win at the 106th running of the Indianapolis 500 on Memorial Day weekend this year, he will not only have his name and likeness on another Borg Warner trophy, he’ll become the undeniable GOAT of open-wheel racing. What will it take to make the dream a reality? “I know one thing for a fact,” he says. “We just need to cross the finish line first.” Shank believes his team is in the right place to do just that. “We have a lot more data going into this year’s Indy 500, so there will be less unknowns,” he says. “Hélio is completely capable of winning a fifth Indy 500. It’s our job to give him the best car possible to make that happen.” Castroneves is confident that another back-toback Indianapolis 500 win is doable. “I know I have the recipe. I’ve done it before,” he says. “When we Clockwise, do it, it will be best moment for not only myself, but also for Mike Shank, Jim from top: Meyer, and the entire organization.” Castroneves track-side; CelBut at 46 years old, Castroneves will be the oldest full-time driver in the venebrating with erated field of 33 at this year’s race. His age is a topic that comes up again and his signature Spider-Man again—but one he says he only considers when he has to do media interviews. As fence climb after the 2021 Indy he likes to point out, racing legend Al Unser won his last Indianapolis 500 just shy 500; The spoils of his forty-eighth birthday, and Mario Andretti won his final IndyCar race at 53. of winning the That gives Castroneves at least seven years to play with—but he doesn’t plan to Indy 500 include an orchid-laden wait that long—or hang his helmet up anytime soon. “The fire is still burning,” he wreath and the says. “A long time ago, Rick Mears told me: ‘If you don’t have the fire—if you stop Borg-Warner trophy; hoisting thinking about it—it’s the time for you to stop.’ I can’t live without it right now. the Dancing Whatever happens will happen one day, but today I am still all in. It’s my comfort with the Stars Mirrorball zone, my therapy, my everything.” trophy with Another thing Mears told Castroneves? As a four-time Indianapolis 500 champ, partner Julianne Hough in he’s in the best of company. If he completes his “drive for five,” he’ll stand alone. 2007. “But I’ll be super okay being lonely,” Castroneves says, laughing. “Because technically, I won’t be alone. I’ll have my team and my fans and my family behind me. And that’s what I love most of all.” « 48

CATS
WITH THE SPACE AND STYLE OF A LUXURY APARTMENT, LARGE TWINHULLED POWER CATAMARANS ARE FAST BECOMING THE MOTOR YACHT OF CHOICE FOR SMART CRUISERS. HERE ARE 10 OF OUR FAVORITES.

n paper, power catamarans make the perfect cruiser. They’re wide and stable, with acres of live-aboard space. They’re fast and hugely efficient too. And more and more of them are using solar energy for power. Yes, their expansive beam can make snagging a marina slip challenging, but smart boaters are finding that power cat positives far outweigh the negatives. It might be the time to try a big cat on for size.

Think of it as Florida’s finest. Aquila Yachts in St. Petersburg recently introduced what could be the coolest-looking cat of them all: its new $4 million Aquila 70. And being born and raised in the Sunshine State, it’s designed for soaking up rays. Up on its wide foredeck, you’ll find huge sun pads and forward-facing sofas, while a fully enclosed flybridge comes air-conditioned when you need to escape the heat. Out on the back deck, there’s a large table and sofas for alfresco dining. Steps lead down to a full-width beach club outfitted with a huge
hydraulically levitating platform between the hulls, if you’re looking for a place to park your tender. Below decks, there’s a quartet of staterooms, including a magnificent full-width master suite with hull windows that flood the cabin with light. Twin 1,000-hp Volvo Penta D13 diesels with joystick-controlled IPS drives—one in each hull— can thrust the Aquila to a top speed of close to 30 knots, while the 1,162-gallon tanks will take you more than 3,000 nautical miles. This is one cat that’s the real meow.

There’s no more prolific a sailing cat builder than Clearwater, Florida–based Leopard Catamarans. That being said, the yachts are actually built in South Africa by Robertson & Caine, with most crafts ending up in the charter fleets of The Moorings, Sunsail, and Footloose. But power cats are also big at Leopard; the fleet’s latest is the perfectly sized 53 Powercat, with a three-cabin layout and a spacious owner’s stateroom that fills the entire starboard hull. Launched at the 2020 Miami International Boat Show, this 53 instantly won the coveted Multihull of the Year award. As the replacement

for the previous Leopard 51, it has big hulls to fill, as this reportedly was the bestselling power cat of all time. Beautifully finished and nicely equipped, the salon is all big, comfy freestanding sofas, with a spacious galley that opens out on to the 25-foot-wide back deck. One major attraction about the 53 is its impressive seakeeping, with the ability to slice through big waves without lots of between-hull pounding. That, and its 22-knot top speed make it one Leopard that can really roar.

From the flybridge, the forward deck looks big enough to land a helicopter on. But then a descending chopper might pose a problem for someone luxuriating in the foredeck hot tub. (Did we mention the hot tub?) This French-built 67-footer from La Rochelle– based Fountaine-Pajot is all about one thing and one thing only: entertaining. That vast, teak-decked foredeck has space for a multitude of loungers, bean bags, and sun pads, plus a deep dining/relaxing conversation pit with its own door into the saloon. And being French, style is also key—from those stunning axe-shaped bow sections, to the low-slung coach roof, to the choice of interior veneers and upholstery. Très chic. The yacht’s impressive 32-foot beam allows for huge cabins—the owner’s suite stretches more than 237 square feet and includes a dressing room with a sofa and a cavernous bathroom. Twin Volvo diesels, with a choice of 300-hp or punchier 480-hp versions, can give a top speed of up to 25 knots. With the 1,057-gallon tanks brimmed, the 67 can cruise majestically for more than 1,700 nautical miles. Think of it as a five-star Fountaine of youth.

High-luxury, zero-emission globe-trotting in an all-electric power catamaran is the promise of new German boat builder Alva Yachts. Although the company was formed just a year ago, it’s about to complete its brand-new Ocean Eco 60 and has a 90-foot version waiting in the wings. The 60 is a guaranteed head turner. With its twin towering vertical bows and bold “flying” buttresses connecting the coach roof to the bows, it could be an extra out of the next Star Wars movie. With integrated solar panels filling the flybridge roof, forward overhang, and those buttresses, the 60 can produce 20kW of solar energy that gets stored in its banks of lithium batteries. These in turn power twin electric motors—owners get to decide how big—that can push the yacht at 7 knots for up to 110 nautical miles, or at 4 to 5 knots indefinitely. You can also crank up the high-capacity generator when the batteries get low. (And, of course, there’s no shortage of electricity to power up your laptop.) Clever interior design from one of the company founders, Holger Henn, has resulted in plenty of accommodation space. The starboard hull provides an owner’s stateroom with a bedroom, an adjoining den/office, and an apartment-sized bathroom.

Call it the Thunder from Down Under. Leading Aussie power cat designer Longreach is putting the finishing touches on its brand-new Longreach 44 High Performance, which packs a screaming top speed of 34 knots. The secret to its speediness? A super efficient hull shape, plus two underwater hydrofoils that lift the slender hulls to reduce drag. That, and a pair of honking 600-hp Yanmar turbo diesels. This performance element is new to the Longreach philosophy. Until now it’s been all about going as far as possible on a tank. The standard 44 typically comes with a pair of 250-hp Yanmars that, at an 8.5-knot cruising speed, sip diesel at less than 3 gallons an hour. It gives it an astonishing range of more than 3,000 nautical miles. That’s Palm Beach to Maine and back. The Longreach range of 44 and 54 models is built in Thailand by award-winning power cat maker Powerplay, which would be delighted to ship one to Florida. Don’t expect delivery any time soon, though—production is booked through 2022.

Tennis ace Rafael Nadal is one of the newest converts to the spatial benefits of power catamarans. Back in June 2020, he traded his sleek Monte Carlo 76 motor yacht called Beethoven for a brand-new Sunreef 80 power catamaran. He’d already chartered a number of power cats from the Polish builder before commissioning the azure-blue-hulled Sunreef he named Great White. The appeal? Maybe it’s the 4,000 square feet of living space, with four cabins for a total eight guests. The owner’s suite features a walk-in dressing room, sofa, and private folddown balcony. With a whopping 39-foot beam, this big cat boasts a huge covered flybridge with a wet bar, a barbecue, and acres of sun pads for tanning, plus a tender garage at the stern big enough for a small armada of Jet Skis and water toys. To satisfy his need for speed, Nadal opted for twin 1,200-hp diesels to give a top speed of 27 knots, as well as huge fuel tanks for a long range. Nadal and his wife, Maria, are from the Spanish island of Mallorca; they keep the Sunreef 80—base price around $7 million—in a slip right outside their home. “Between a catamaran and a monohull, there is no comparison. The space you have is impossible to compare,” says Nadal. “I have such great memories of my charters, I had to have one for myself.”

The benefit of twin hulls on a powerboat aren’t restricted just to huge-beam, XXL-sized gin palaces. Up in Burlington, Washington, family-run Aspen Power Catamarans has been building a range of quirky, 28- to 40-foot power cats that owners just love. Aspen’s newest offering is the multifunctional, 37-foot C108, with the immediate triple appeal of not only having outboard power, but also boasting a skinny draft of a mere 1 foot, 10 inches. And with its narrow 10-foot beam, it can be trailered. But quirky is the word here. Like other Aspen models, the new C108 features asymmetrical displacement hulls, with one hull being 35 percent thinner than the other. It’s kind of the same thinking behind an outrigger canoe. It means less drag, better fuel efficiency, and zippier performance. And while the C108 comes with twin outboards, one hull gets a 115-hp Yamaha and the other a 200-hp Yamaha. With both motors humming, this cat tops out at 26 knots, burning just a gallon of fuel per mile. The cozy saloon features a dinette opposite the galley, helm, and co-pilot seats up front, as well as a lift-up rear window. Below decks there’s a decently sized master cabin, a single, and a rather weird arrangement of a second single accessible through the head. 54
French builder Lagoon Yachts pretty much invented the power catamaran market back in the early 2000s by lopping the mast off its Lagoon 43 sailing cat to create the hugely successful Lagoon Power 43. The company’s creations have come a long way since then. Just feast your eyes on its latest offering: the spectacular 67-foot Lagoon Sixty 7 floating palace. Penned by the legendary French car designer Patrick le Quément, the lines of this twin-hulled beauty are low, sleek, and sexy. Even standing still, it looks like it’s slicing through waves at its 21-knot top speed. What’s so impressive about the new Sixty 7 is its truly massive deck areas. Up on the bow there’s a protected, sunken dining area, along with full-width, teak-decked spaces for sun loungers and pads. Add to this the expansive covered flybridge, with its alfresco kitchen and dining area, and the vast cockpit area with more nooks for dining and lounging. We love the oversized side cockpit pads that are perfect for a post-lunch snooze. Take your pick from four- or five-cabin layouts, while that massive 32-foot beam makes the saloon bigger than that of most luxury condos. Interestingly, Lagoon doesn’t try to overpower the Sixty 7. Balancing performance with fuel efficiency, engine choices are either twin 340-hp Volvo D6s or a pair of 440-hp Yanmar 6LYs.

Horizon Power Catamarans, with its U.S. headquarters in Fort Lauderdale, is one of the power cat pioneers. Its lineup includes the PC52, PC65, and flagship PC74— though it’s the 60-foot PC60 that’s the sweetheart of the range, with more than 50 sold. Big but not too big, it packs four staterooms into its 24-foot, 6-inch beam—including the option of a stunning forward-facing master suite on the main deck. The 60 also comes with the choice of an open bridge, a semi-enclosed bridge, or an enclosed and air-conditioned Skylounge, with sliding glass doors to the aft deck. Powering the PC60 is a pair of 705-hp Cummins diesels that can give a top speed of 23 knots. Throttle back to a more leisurely 9 knots and it’ll run for nearly 1,500 nautical miles on a tank. What we love about Horizon’s customer care is that every new cat is delivered to the owner fully commissioned and equipped with all tools and spares. Boating is all about having fun in the sun. So why not use the power of the sun to increase your fun factor? That’s the thinking from German-owned Silent Yachts, which has been building solar-powered power cats since 2010. The company’s latest model, the Silent 60, features a roof and hardtop crammed with 42 solar panels that provide juice to a 286kWh lithium battery bank. This, in turn, powers a pair of 340kW electric motors that propel the Silent 60 silently at a zero-emission cruising speed of 6 to 8 knots. Need to get home in a hurry? Push forward the throttles for a 20-knot top speed. Planning on cruising further afield—like around the world? The latest Silent 60 is available with a light, compact, inflatable kite sail that can be deployed from a small mast on the bow. Climbing as high as 400 feet, the 140-square-foot kite can haul the 30-ton yacht along at 4 to 5 knots, depending on wind strength. Or add 4 to 5 knots to the Silent 60’s electric-powered cruising speed. Impressive. « FORTLAUDERDALEILLUSTRATED.COM | APRIL 2022

The wait is finally over—the space that formerly housed Mellow Mushroom in Flagler Village has evolved into Batch New Southern Kitchen. A sister concept to its West Palm locale, this outpost embodies Lauderdale’s youthful, spirited—and now, flavorful—neighborhood. Foodies in need of a midweek pick-me-up or a weekend brunch can take a seat inside the massive 5,000-square-foot interior or move things outside to the patio to enjoy a modern take on Southern scratch cooking. Sample classics ranging from chicken pot pie
to the ultimate Mac Attack that becomes more mouthwatering with toppings like 12-hour brisket and pecan-whiskey candied bacon. For brunch, nosh on everything from ooey-gooey s’mores waffles to petite Nashville hot chicken sliders. No matter the time of day, make sure someone at the table orders the signature Chicken ‘n’ Waffles, a sweet tea–brined and fried half chicken paired with savory cheddar cornbread waffles that are oh-so delightful with a touch of chili-thyme honey and bourbon-maple butter. No experience is complete without a few of Batch’s garden-to-glass cocktails and other fun tipples. (batchsouthernkitchen.com)

next door) has garnered massive crowds for its vibe-heavy space and foolproof dishes. It caters to everyone from business professionals to groups of friends. More than a decade later, Petrillo has revealed YOLO 2.0—a total transformation of the restaurant and lounge that extends to the menu. Even the signature firepit has been replaced by a 15-foot “Burning Tree,” symbolizing transformation. “You might only live once, but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t embrace change and evolve in life,” shares Petrillo. Below, we’ve rounded up three must-try bites. (yolorestaurant.com)
YOLO 2.0 THIS CROWD FAVORITE IN DOWNTOWN LAUDY RETURNS WITH A REIMAGINED MENU AND ATMOSPHERE YOLO (or “you only live once”) is an acronym that once rolled off everyone’s tongue. It was so popular even Tim Petrillo, cofounder/CEO of The Restaurant People, deemed it catchy enough to use for his downtown Fort Lauderdale restaurant, which opened in 2008. The restaurant (and O Lounge, its sister concept

Kale Caesar
YOLO takes this simple salad to the next level. Crunchy kale is tossed with black truffle Caesar dressing and topped with Parmesan, endive, and crispy malanga. It’s even better with the addition of shrimp.
Smoked Bone-In Short Rib
2
While you might have had short ribs before, nothing compares to this beast of a plate. The short rib is smoked and so tender it makes cutting it off the bone even easier. The meat is accompanied by an array of pickled veggies and a trio of sauces sure to give you nextday cravings. Tip: Pair the short rib with fingerling bravas with aioli drizzle atop a romesco sauce.

Burning Tree
It only makes sense to talk about the signature “Burning Tree” dessert. The mini sculptural tree is lit on fire before arriving tableside. Its branches are adorned with vanilla doughnuts and a variety of dipping sauces.

MATCHBOX Following the opening of a successful outpost at Sawgrass Mills, Matchbox’s newest locale will be housed at Society Las Olas. Owned by Thompson Hospitality, this eatery offers elevated American bistro fare, with menu items ranging from lobster pie pizza to a tuna poke bowl to the Winchester Beast burger. Enjoy seasonal craft cocktails on the expansive patio, which will share a space with another concept under the Thompson Hospitality umbrella. Continue reading below for more details on that second hot spot. (matchboxrestaurants.com)
BIG BUNS DAMN GOOD BURGERS Also sharing space at Society Las Olas is Big Buns Damn Good Burgers. Founder Craig Carey created the brand following a cross-country trip that left him questioning why there were restaurants that didn’t serve more than one style of burger. His curiosity led him to create a fine-casual spot that offers innovative and “never-beforeseen” burgers plus over-the-top shakes. Think: the Hot & Hefe (Angus beef, pepper jack cheese, avocado, grilled habanero, serrano pico de gallo, and sriracha aioli) and the Unicorn shake (a hand-spun strawberry shake with rainbow sprinkles, Sour Patch twists, and ginormous marshmallows). Here, everything is bigger and better. (eatbigbuns.com) From top: Matchbox lobster pie pizza; Big Buns’ classic burger and Unicorn shake.

SOMETHING SWEET
TICKLED PINK The aromas and flavor profiles of some 80-plus creations inside Pink Love Donuts is enough to send you to doughnut heaven, but you’ll need to come back down to earth to savor each and every bite. It’s a labor of love for owner Diego Macedo, who arrives at dawn to help get things moving in the kitchen before hungry guests flood his shop. On top of fluffy dough creations, Macedo and his team bake up an assortment of massive croissants and savory bites like Argentinian empanadas (an homage to his homeland) inside the Oakland Park locale awash in bright colors and punchy artwork. There are everyone’s favorites, but the real showstoppers are flavors like Bacon Sriracha and the Pizza Doughnut. They also serve “drunken” selections, which come with a miniature pipette of Malibu Rum, Baileys Irish Cream, or Kahlúa. There are even options for vegans. “There is no other bakery selling alternative, vegan options like we do and at any given time,” shares Macedo, noting he offers 15 to 25 flavors daily. “I don’t believe there’s such a thing as having too many flavors on the menu,” he says. “Our team is always coming up with new ones on a regular basis.” (pinklovedonutsandmore.com)

ART OF TRANSFORMATION Contemporary abstract artist Melissa Herrington explores transformation in her works—a theme at the core of her latest exhibition, “Drawing Her In.” On view now through April 23 at the Coral Springs Museum of Art, 18 pieces highlight Herrington’s love of color, shape, and texture. “I explore spontaneous marks and subtle forms through abstraction, powerful brushstrokes, large-scale canvases, and especially [the] use of color,” says the native Floridian who now lives in Venice, California. “Objects and images are never too explicit; this ‘unfinished’ fluidity represents an unfolding of new possibilities.” Through her unique application of materials, Herrington investigates the ever-changing nature of the female form. She is also hosting a professional development workshop on April 7, offering advice to artists hoping to find, apply to, and participate in residency programs, which Herrington says can have “a lasting impact on an artist’s life and practice.” (melissaherrington.com; coralspringsmuseum.org) —Melissa Puppo
