Answers for back pain Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute’s Spine Center offers comprehensive care
Y
ou bend to grab a piece of paper off the floor and a bolt of pain shoots from your back down your leg. With back and neck pain affecting 80 percent of Americans at some point in their life, it’s an all too common occurrence. But how do you know if the cause of your pain is something serious? The experts at Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute’s Spine Center suggest a comprehensive evaluation to get to the root of your problem, alleviate your pain and prevent long-term issues.
weight gain and working at makeshift home offices that lack chairs with lumbar support and arm rests.
Physiatrists — physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists — at the Center’s multiple locations deal with issues affecting the spinal cord, including problems with bones, joints, nerves, muscles and tendons. “We almost always isolate the issue, and with a proper diagnosis comes the proper treatment,” said Ronald Tolchin, D.O., medical director.
The good news is that medical advances have made it possible for most patients to avoid surgery. “We have a whole armamentarium of noninvasive and holistic treatments available today,” Dr. Tolchin said. The care team may recommend stretching and physical therapy, anti-inflammatory and injectable medications, weight loss with an antiinflammatory diet and safe exercise.
Causes of back and neck pain include degenerative disc disease, arthritis, skeletal abnormalities, spinal stenosis, herniated discs and more. Even screen time and texting can throw the neck out of alignment. And with the COVID-19 pandemic, doctors are seeing an increase in back problems due to too much sitting, not enough exercise,
In addition to injections that are administered in the office, minimally invasive radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is performed at an outpatient location. RFA uses heat to disrupt the nerve tissue’s transmission of pain signals to the brain. Epidural and facet joint injections are also handled on an outpatient basis.
Full Page.indd 1
The Center works with everyone from athletes to the elderly, and handles extremely complex cases. For some patients, an initial assessment is followed by imaging studies — an MRI or CT scan, for example — that reveal problems such as a narrowing of the spinal column, a bone spur pressing on a nerve, bulging discs or arthritis. Nerve conduction studies are performed on-site.
Some 90 percent of back and neck problems are improved with these noninvasive approaches. For the 10 percent who require surgery, the Center’s team works closely with the neurosurgeons at Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute. “As a comprehensive spine center, not only do we look at you holistically and provide many services in one location,” Dr. Tolchin said, “but I can literally walk down the hall to any of my neurosurgical colleagues, pull up images and discuss a patient.” Follow-up with back and neck pain patients is also important, according to Dr. Tolchin. “We don’t just treat you and say, ‘See you in five years.’ For some patients, the condition can be chronic. We’re a place where they can find salvation, and we will help them get through it.”
With locations throughout Miami-Dade and Broward counties, appointments can be made by calling 786-596-3876 or visiting BaptistHealth.net/Spine.

GET BACK TO A LIFE WITHOUT PAIN. At Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute’s Spine Center, we want to help you get back to a life free of neck and back pain. LOCAL BIZ
IN BLOOM
These days, it’s nearly impossible to attend a chic event in South Florida that doesn’t feature an epic floral scape by Flormosura, an expressive floral design and creative studio in Fort Lauderdale. The brainchild of Marcela Bazana-Weber and her husband, Jackson Weber, Flormosura is known for its signature style of eclectic fresh and dried blooms. The brand’s aesthetic is inspired by Miami’s Art Deco design and the “vibrations” of Marcela’s hometown of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The not-your-typical flower shop blossomed as a way for the couple to stay afloat during the pandemic, when Jackson lost his job in the hospitality business and Marcela shifted from freelancing for other floral shops. With a child to care for, the couple decided to start their own studio that
is rooted in the local community. “I wanted to see young people sending flowers and being proud of it,” says Marcela. She has since conceptualized hundreds of designs for events like Art Basel, the South Beach Wine & Food Festival, and the Latin Billboard Music Awards. Brands such as Love Shack Fancy, Bacardi, and Louis Vuitton have also taken note, hiring Marcela to design installations for their fetes. Flormosura crossed its two-year mark in May and opened a creative studio in Oakland Park, which is available to rent for photo shoots, events, bridal showers, and more. The couple plans to host workshops and is set to roll out a flower subscription for those who can’t get enough of Marcela’s divine creations. (flormosura.com) —Melissa Puppo

Cabana Life EPIC POOL PARTY Take a break from your backyard and live the good life at Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood’s DAER Dayclub. The 21,130-square-foot Vegasesque club boasts a resort-style pool, two dipping pools, 13 private cabanas, and numerous daybeds. SPA BLISS
Summer is the perfect time to unwind and indulge in some pampering. One of Fort Lauderdale’s crown jewels, The Spa at Auberge, is a great spot to stress less for the day. In addition to self-guided experiences, body treatments, and facials, take advantage of the spa’s salt cave, infrared sauna, and steam room. There’s even a new Ocean Breeze rooftop terrace for yoga plus an oceanfront, poolside Spa Garden featuring private cabanas ideal for outdoor massage treatments. Take your wellness journey one step further with Auberge’s latest offering, the Biostation, where you can nourish your body with curated IV therapy formulas, replenish lost volume with dermal fillers, and get to the root cause of certain issues with an in-depth blood test. (aubergebeachspa.com) —M.P.
Sunseeking, but make it fashion: The Diplomat Beach Resort in Hollywood has partnered with fashion giant Trina Turk to create four custom cabanas bedecked in the brand’s poppy prints and patterns. Reserve a cabana and gather some friends (each cabana can house four people) for an Insta-worthy day. Be sure to coordinate for maximum photo ops; cabanas come in varying colorways, including turquoise and orange, bright yellow and deep purple, and shades of blue. Pull the drapes closed for privacy or throw them back to show off your crew and enjoy the views of the ocean beyond the recently renovated resort’s pair of pools. 24/SEVEN Q&A
Pier-to-Pier Network WANT TO SPEND A DAY CRUISING LAUDY’S WATERWAYS, BUT DON’T OWN A BOAT? OWN A BOAT BUT DON’T HIT THE WATER NEARLY ENOUGH? LOCALLY BASED BOATSETTER OFFERS SAILING SOLUTIONS WITH JUST A FEW TAPS ON YOUR SMARTPHONE. By Kristen Desmond LeFevre It’s the question that anyone who’s ever considered buying a boat has asked themselves before forking over a down payment: Will I get out on the water enough to make the costs of boat ownership worth it? Jaclyn Baumgarten founded Boatsetter to alleviate that classic worry. Tapping into a model made popular by companies like Uber and Airbnb, Boatsetter offers boat owners a way to safely list their boats for rent—and gives boat yearners a platform to access cruising, fishing, sailing, sandbarhopping, or even a luxury yacht vacation. Aventura sat down with Baumgarten to learn more about her business and her love for all things boating. (boatsetter.com)
DREW DAU ON UNSPLASH
AVM: How did you come up with the idea to start a peer-to-peer boating marketplace? Baumgarten: My best childhood memories are from the times my father would take my brothers and me out on a boat together. Those wonderful childhood summer days out on the water were the times when the rest of the world disappeared and it was just us, with our dad. No worries, just sunshine and water, and us all together. My father was our family’s sole breadwinner and he worked very hard to provide a good life for my mom and us four kids. He worked long hours and came home late, tired. In the financial crisis of 1988, his business collapsed and we moved out to a little apartment in the California desert. My dad lived and worked five days a week in Los Angeles to pay the bills, only coming home on the weekends. It wasn’t an easy time, but 24

throughout my whole childhood, every summer for two weeks we would go back to Illinois, borrow a boat from a relative, and spend endless, glorious, sunny days together on Fox Lake without a care in the world, swimming, tubing, and having our dad completely to ourselves. It was the beauty of these summer days with my dad that inspired me to create what is now Boatsetter. My family was lucky back then because we had someone to lend us their boat, but that’s rare. I wanted everyone to have the opportunity to experience the beauty, the tranquility, the fun, the excitement, and the togetherness that boating brings. Boatsetter has more than 700 locations all over the world. Why did you choose Fort Lauderdale for your headquarters? Fort Lauderdale has long been the boating capital of the world—the city is built around boating and it has an infrastructure for yachting and pleasure boating that is unmatched anywhere

else. This draws boating and yachting enthusiasts from all around the planet year-round and makes South Florida one of our largest and most vibrant markets. From a business perspective, South Florida is simply a great place to build a company. This is a burgeoning market, with an exploding tech scene, so there’s a lot of attention, energy, and excitement around this entrepreneurial community. You can get and keep great talent here that you can’t get in Silicon Valley because of the competition and the skyrocketing cost of talent there. What kind of boat do you own? Where are your favorite local spots to cruise? My personal boat is a 2022 Crest pontoon boat. I fell in love with these boats over the past two years when it was our escape from being cooped up in our apartment month after month [during the pandemic]. My favorite places became the sandbars in Fort Lauderdale and at Haulover Inlet. The best thing in the world for me is grabbing friends and family, stocking up the boat with food and drinks, and anchoring out for a day in the water and the sun, relaxing, swimming, and belting out karaoke!

Utilizing products with SPF (sun protection factor) actively prevents the accumulation of layers of skin damage, thereby greatly reducing one’s risk of skin cancer and combating signs of premature aging. In recent years, the use of sunscreen has soared in popularity, with many high-end brands now offering options for all skin types as well as eco-friendly alternatives. Treasure of the

Go off-the-grid at eco-luxe resort Secret Bay in unspoiled Dominica By Paul Rubio
For those who dream of traveling to undiscovered destinations, the Caribbean likely doesn’t come to mind. Yet, among the Windward Islands in the Lesser Antilles lies a secluded island nation underscored by dramatic beauty and a lost-in-time allure. Welcome to Dominica, a magnificent, mountainous, independent country, 72,000 citizens strong, hidden between more touristed neighbors Martinique, St. Lucia, and Guadeloupe, and not to be confused with
the Dominican Republic. Rightfully known as the Nature Island, this untouched land teems with extreme natural phenomena such as towering waterfalls, boiling lakes, and coral reefs that bubble from geothermal activity. Across its 289.6 square miles of rugged terrain and lush rainforest, biodiverse Dominica harbors more than 1,000 species of flowering plants and 170 bird species, and its coastal waters receive 20 species of whales and dolphins, including resident populations of sperm whales. Among the land and sea splendor, an intimate, adults-only eco-resort opens this uncharted paradise to the luxury traveler. At Secret Bay, understated cliff-top villas command Dominica’s superlative views, while an array of amenities invite relaxation and an on-site adventure center ensures exhilarating excursions and maximum exploration. An all-villa boutique property within the esteemed Relais & Châteaux collection, Secret Bay began as a personal residence-turned-passion project. Back in the late 2000s, Dominica-born entrepreneur Gregor Nassief purchased a prime 4-acre tract above Secret and Tibay beaches along the island’s rainforest-clad northwest. Soon, his father-in-law, award-winning Latin American architect Fruto Vivas, presented Nassief and daughter Sandra with a blueprint for their dream home in the Caribbean wilds. The grand residence metamorphosed into a more approach-
able, minimalist, wood-and-glass abode, rife in transitional indoor-outdoor space and sensibly blended into the landscape. The stunning result, now known as Zabuco Honeymoon Villa I, inspired Nassief to embark on a larger master plan, acquiring the surrounding land and developing a worldclass, light-on-earth resort. Nowadays, Secret Bay comprises a Welcome House, 12 resort villas (and counting), in-progress Secret Bay Residences, Zing Zing Restaurant, Gommier Spa, lounger-lined Gwiyavye’ Lap Pool & Bar, a sprawling wellness pavilion, a watersports hut, and more, cast across 40-plus acres. The dozen residential-style villas are intended for languid days in nature, each with floor-to-ceiling glass doors, outdoor dining areas, rain showers, and plunge pools. Also found in every unit, a gourmet kitchen supports homespun meals— though guests tend to leave the cooking to their dedicated villa host or an on-demand private chef. For those with the recommended breakfast and dinner package, Secret Bay prestocks the fridge and pantry, culling guest selections from a long list of choices. Every morning, your villa host will whip up breakfast, whether that be a healthy, organic spread of fruits and proteins or a local feast of eggs, saltfish, and bakes (fried dough). Dinners can also be prepared or delivered in-villa, but most favor dining at treetop Zing Zing Restaurant. Here, no two nights are the same thanks to everchanging selections based on fresh catch

and daily harvest. However, it doesn’t hurt to request the epic tuna escabeche or the grilled calypso chicken in advance. Elsewhere on property, familiar Caribbean activities are on tap. Consider working on your tan while sipping rumspiked cocktails around the pool, decompressing on the beach, or getting pampered in the spa. But hop in a kayak and you’ll quickly realize that this is anything but the posh Caribbean Clockwise from right: Tuna escabeche, calypso chicken, and a table at Zing Zing Restaurant, which features a new multicourse menu every night.
ordinary. Cross through natural arches and stumble upon sea caves before claiming all of swoon-worthy Secret Beach for yourself. (Your villa host can arrange a beachfront picnic to heighten the experience.) Take a boat north along the coastline to admire the uninhabited mountain-meets-sea grandeur, intersected by limestone pinnacles and formidable cliffs that host seabird colonies by the dozens. Venture south and under the sea at Champagne Reef, which explodes with billions of tiny bubbles from active fumaroles and a full cast of marine life that have adapted to these alien conditions.
Head inland and ogle skyscraping waterfalls that rival Hawaii’s and Costa Rica’s cascades; the scenery is so cinematic, in fact, that Dominica’s misty rivers and verdant rainforests have served as backdrops in some of the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Hike the footpaths of UNESCO-recognized Morne Trois Pitons National Park and reach the world’s second largest boiling lake, swimmable gorges, and emerald pools. Search for rare and colorful birds on a segment of the 115-mile Waitukubuli National Trail—the Caribbean’s longest—under the guidance of Dominica’s foremost birding expert, Bertrand Jno Baptiste, aka “Dr. Birdy.” While avid bird-watchers call on Dr. Birdy for primo encounters with the endemic Sisserou parrot, the pro’s enthusiasm, knowledge, and tried-and-true method for finding avifauna can convert any skeptic into an outright bird lover. (Spoiler: Dr. Birdy possesses an uncanny ability to mimic countless birdcalls and often communicates directly with his feathered friends.) In total, both Secret Bay and greater Dominica shine as two of the Caribbean’s final secrets. To be sure, a relatively remote location and inaccessibility have been instrumental in maintaining this innocence. In December 2021, American Airlines introduced the first ever nonstop flights to Dominica from the United States, departing from Miami. Yes, this makes the once exhausting journey far easier, but change and growth loom. Our advice: Visit Secret Bay and Dominica now while it’s still possible to experience this Caribbean paradise in its purest form. (secretbay.dm) « FORTLAUDERDALEILLUSTRATED.COM | JULY/AUGUST 2022

ig-ship cruising is back—in a big way. After a lengthy pandemic pause, major cruise lines are rolling out one stunning ship after another, freshly minted with state-of-the-art amenities, elevated dining spaces, and contemporary designs in tune with the desires of today’s cruising elite. One such vessel is the MSC Seashore, a new incarnation of the Italian brand’s slick Seaside class fleet, dubbed Seaside Evo (which stands for evolution). With nearly 140,000 square feet for outdoor endeavors, the 2,270-room mega-ship features the highest ratio of outdoor space per guest of any MSC ship and several firsts for the brand. Think: a seafront boardwalk, an aft infinity pool (bringing the total pool count to six), a massive aquapark, and an impressive glass skywalk. The onboard excitement never ends thanks to more than 300 entertainment activities per sailing, plus prolific amenities to enjoy at your leisure. It’s not uncommon to start a day with some fitness, pampering, and sport in the Aurea Spa and Gym and Deck 20’s Sports Arena, followed by sunbathing and languishing over a boozy lunch. Later, play some blackjack, enjoy live music, attend an acrobatic show, and then retreat to the virtual reality–fueled Hall of Games or hit one of the late-night bars. Specialized options for dining and drinking are many. Standouts include the vibrant Kaito Sushi Bar, where nigiri and sashimi are delivered via conveyor belts; Venchi 1878 Chocolate and Coffee Bar, a new
IVAN SARFATTI
Innovator of the Seas outpost at sea by the eponymous Italian gourmet chocolatier; and 1920s-inspired lounge Le Cabaret Rouge, where you can catch a different song and dance performance nightly. The latest and greatest in cruise excess notwithstanding, the MSC Seashore’s strongest attributes are its eco-conscious design and approach. While big cruising and environmental responsibility are not commonly aligned, MSC is poised to change this narrative, delivering on an action plan for zeroimpact cruise operations. In this vein, the MSC Seashore houses some of today’s most advanced environmental technologies, evidenced in the onboard wastewater-treatment systems, fresh-water production plant, noise-management system, and more. Furthermore, one of the ship’s regular destinations, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, is a working restoration and conservation project. The private island off Bimini is a former industrial wasteland that MSC has transformed into a thriving, 64-square-mile marine reserve flanked by sparkling white-sand beaches. Overall, the MSC Seashore marks the dawn of a new generation of big-ship cruising that considers at once grand amenities for luxury travelers and the industry’s environmental impact. Experience this innovator of the seas on sailings to the Caribbean and Bahamas from Port Miami through November 2022 and on itineraries through South America and Europe in the months following. Helmed by chef Jeremy Ford—Top Chef season 13 winner and executive chef of Miami’s wildly popular Stubborn Seed—this swank space offers elevated dining formerly unavailable in Palm Beach Gardens. Go for the gooey black truffle jalapeño poppers from the appetizer offerings, the tuna coconut ceviche from the raw bar, and the smoked 18-ounce prime rib eye as an entrée. HIT THE LINKS In addition to 90 holes of championship golf across five courses, the resort now features two new courses designed by Andy Staples. Encouraging match versus stroke play, The Match course offers a novel canvas for players of all abilities in a nontraditional setting. The Staple is 9 short holes (between 60 and 130 yards) that feature a variety of creative challenges—ideal for plenty of afterhours play and practice options. Flying FINN
Axopar’s new 45-foot XC Cross Cabin is an SUV for the water By Howard Walker It’s rare for a boat brand to be instantly recognizable. So many fall into the floating Clorox bottle category: generic, practical, functional, yet easily forgettable. Not so for Axopar. Since 2014, the Finnish builder has been cranking out 22- to 37-foot day boats that have been setting the market on fire. So far, more than 3,500 examples have been sold around the globe. It’s easy to see why. With their razor-sharp axe bow, distinctive twin-step hull, and faintly militaristic lines, these go-fast day boats spin heads from Miami to Maine. See one screaming up behind you, piercing waves at 50 knots, and you half expect Clive Cussler’s Dirk Pitt to be at the helm, chasing the baddies in some new blockbuster novel. Building on the success of its 37-footer, Axopar is now dipping a toe into luxury waters with its brand-new 45 XC Cross Cabin flagship. In the process, it’s creating what just might be the perfect day cruiser for Floridian families. 38
Yes, the hull shape stays largely the same, with that impossible-tomiss bow, low freeboard, and straked hull. But what’s different—and arguably the boat’s greatest appeal—is that dramatic pilothouse. In addition to its wraparound tinted glass windows and workboat-like, angled windshield, the cabin has twin-sliding side doors that enable you to flood the helm area with that sweet ocean breeze. Want even more fresh air? Either or both of the canvas sunroofs can glide open with the touch of a button. Plus, for the ultimate in alfresco living while at anchor, simply drop the built-in balcony doors nestled within each side of the hull. The seating layout inside the pilothouse is equally versatile. At the helm station, with its 360-degree visibility, there are three seats in a row. Behind them is a well-equipped galley station (with a grill, sink, and fridge) that can move backwards and forwards on sliders. At the back is a U-shaped sofa, complete with a fold-out, swiveling table that can easily accommodate up to 10 diners. While the 45 XC Cross Cabin is a terrific day boat, there’s a cabin up front with a double berth, a separate toilet, a shower, and lots of storage. It’s here that you’ll find one more Axopar party trick: electronic gullwing hatches that rise, like the wings of a cormorant, to fill the cabin with air and light.

PRICE: TBD LENGTH: 45 FEET, 7 INCHES BEAM: 13 FEET, 6 INCHES DRAFT: 3 FEET, 3 INCHES POWER: 3 X 300-HP MERCURY VERADO V8 TOP SPEED: 50 MPH WHY WE LOVE IT: BECAUSE THIS FLYING FINN OFFERS POWER, VERSATILITY, AND A DISTINCT STYLE.
Axopar prides itself on total flexibility, which means the new 45 is available in four other layouts: a fully open Spyder, the TTop, the longer Sun-Top, and the Cross Top. That being said, there’s one more cool option with the 45 Cross Cabin, and that’s a second sleeping cabin. It can be added to the stern cockpit and offers two extra beds and another head and shower—a perfect option for weekend guests. Power for this needle-nosed rocket ship comes from a trio of 4.6-liter 300-hp Mercury Verado V8s (900 hp in total) that can punch the 15,400-pound 45 XC to a top speed of 45-plus knots. Throttle back to the Axopar’s 20-knot sweet spot, and the fuel economy will reportedly rival any fast 45-footer on the market. And, because the hull’s low freeboard and cabin roof help to reduce the boat’s center of
gravity, Axopar claims impressive handling in gnarly seas. That, and a super-smooth ride. All Axopar models are built on an automotive-style production line at a state-of-the-art factory in Poland. Judging by the examples I’ve toured at boat shows, the quality is impressive. There’s a Florida connection here too: Axopar’s main Southeast distributor is in Fort Lauderdale. «

Between May and October, tens of thousands of endangered sea turtles—mainly loggerheads, greens, and leatherbacks—arrive on Florida’s shores to nest. Approximately two months later, hatchlings emerge from the sand and begin the journey called life. Lucky for us, several coastal parks and organizations host seasonal walks in search of nesting turtles and their offspring. Some of our favorite experiences take place at Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge, which boasts the highest concentration of nesting loggerhead turtles in the western hemisphere. Here, Sea Turtle Conservancy, Friends of the Carr Refuge, Stella Maris Environmental Research, and others lead these encounters, which typically occur at night or very early in the morning. Rainbow Springs, at the headwaters of the Rainbow River, is known for water so clear you can see all the way to the bottom. It’s best to experience the springs in the early morning, as the fog lifts and the resident wildlife is active. The preferred mode of transport is the kayak, though tubing is supremely popular with families. Either way, you’ll cross crystalline waters and gaze at fish darting in and out of aquatic grasses on your way to view the area’s famed waterfalls. Located 3 miles off Naples, Keewaydin Island is one of the largest unbridged islands in Southwest Florida. The majority of its 1,300 acres is conserved land, part of the Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (rookerybay.org) and home to a rich habitat and excellent shelling. The northern tip boasts pioneer history and a dozen privately owned cottages that are sometimes available to rent. There is no infrastructure on the island—and no public dock or bathroom facilities. Most visitors make it a day trip on a private or rented boat or through charter and sightseeing companies. Rookery Bay, Hemingway Water Shuttle, and Pure Naples, among others, offer trips. This slice of paradise is close to the sophisticated culture of Marco Island and Fifth Avenue South. The Inn on Fifth and its Club Level Suites (innonfifth.com) are within 10 minutes of Pure Naples’ pontoon docked at Tin City on the Gordon River (purenaples.com), and the journey out passes Naples landmarks, the mansions of Port Royal, and mangrove-fringed barrier islands. Locals refer to the southern tip as Boater’s Beach, where they tether their boats offshore. The food boat Just Beachy Burgers & More is open most days for lunch. Visitors who want to spot wildlife seek out hiking trails or head to the island’s west side. Being isolated on a sandbar of an island with more coves than people may be an urbanite’s fantasy, but for those of us within driving distance of the Florida Keys, it’s as real as the coconuts that line these shores. Little Palm Island is the stuff of fairy tales—remote, lush, magical—and it’s located in the Straits of Florida, a short boat or seaplane ride from Little Torch Key. The 4-acre private island has a long history as a getaway for luminaries, including several celebrities and a U.S. president. (Harry S. Truman famously spent time here in the 1940s, fishing for tarpon and entertaining dignitaries.) These days, Little Palm Island honors its past by embracing a socialclub aesthetic that dials back to the heyday of American royalty. Steeped in romance, it is a favorite of honeymooning couples and anyone looking for a secluded hideaway where top-notch dining, wellness offerings, and just about any activity in or on the water are apropos to the experience. If you’ve ever spent time in a treehouse, you already know what the thatched-roof bungalows feel like. Elevated from the sand and surrounded by wood-plank decks, these elegantly tropical accommodations come with private beaches, hammocks, firepits, outdoor tubs and showers—in short, everything you need to ignite castaway fantasies. THE TERRACE HOTEL LAKELAND Rewind to 1924, when the Lakeland Terrace Hotel debuted as Florida’s first air-conditioned hotel. Back then, little Lakeland was experiencing a big economic boom, fueled by Florida’s growing status as a vacation destination. Soon, the high-rise hotel overlooking serene Lake Mirror became a favorite of the roaring twenties elite. Fast-forward nearly 100 years, and today’s traveler can again bask in the glory of the 88-room property, reinvented after a head-to-toe renovation as The Terrace Hotel Lakeland, Tapestry Collection by Hilton. In its current form, the hotel commingles Art Deco flair with contemporary works by local artists. Patterned furnishings and soft goods in common spaces are inspired by native flora and fauna, while guest rooms skew mid-century modern. Base yourself here for easy access to Central Florida’s enchanting lake district, wildlife-rich Circle B Bar Reserve, or even the theme park excess of Tampa, Orlando, or nearby Legoland. COLUMBIA RESTAURANT
This South Beach icon has been cracking the claws of Florida’s prized stone crabs for more than a century—and diners still can’t get enough. While some reservations are available at this old-school institution, prepare for long waits to score chilled delicacies in jumbo, large, select, or medium, gently cracked and served with a secret mustard sauce plus a very necessary bib. When visiting outside of stone crab season (which takes place October 15 to May 1), enjoy an array of succulent dishes and sides that are almost as famous as its crabs: the chopped salad, blackened mahi-mahi, hashed brown potatoes, skinny fried sweets, and key lime pie, to name a few. For authentic Cuban cuisine, Tampa you can’t beat Columbia. In 1905, Casimiro Hernandez opened a 60-seat café in Ybor City to serve Cuban coffee and sandwiches to immigrant cigar factory workers. DAVIDSON OF DUNDEE
This roadside must-stop offers a sweet taste of Old Florida. Watch as confectioners tip a steaming concoction from a copper kettle onto a marble-topped table to form jellied candies in fresh-from-the-grove flavors like honeybell, key lime, and grapefruit. Snag a sample or two and be sure to bring home several jars of the house-made preserves. Our favorites? Coconut butter, guava jelly, and the iconic Florida Hurricane marmalade—a mashup of orange, pineapple, and mango that’s like sunshine in a jar. (davidsonofdundee.com) —Kristen Desmond LeFevre
CAP’S Place
THE YEARLING RESTAURANT
When it opened in 1928, Cap’s Place was a casino and speakeasy likely hidden from the law because of its secret location: It’s perched on an island off Lighthouse Point and can only be reached by boat. We love a restaurant with a checkered past. If you can look past the shabby-chic buildings, you’ll find some of the best seafood in Florida. You can’t go wrong with anything on Cap’s menu, but we’re here to tell you that the seafood-stuffed Maine lobster is worthy of last-meal status. And don’t skip the Okeechobee hearts of palm salad; it’s the real deal, and you don’t find that very often. In a day of destination dining and glitzy chef-driven restaurants, Broward County’s oldest—and most colorful—restaurant still reigns supreme. (capsplace.com) —D.N.

THE WHITE CHRISTMAS, WITH ITS AIRY WHITE CAKE AND WHIPPED CREAM? THE BUTTERCRUNCH ICE CREAM PIE, WHICH WE CAN’T EVEN SAY WITHOUT SALIVATING? THE JAMAICAN RUM CAKE, GENEROUSLY SOAKED IN JAMAICA’S FINEST? TO EARN YOUR FLORIDIAN STRIPES, YOU’LL NEED TO DO YOUR SACRED DUTY AND TRY THEM ALL. (BUBBLEROOMRESTAURANT.COM) —D.N.

MIAMI
Ask around, and Miami locals will steer you toward a taste of Cuba stateside at Versailles, an institution in the Little Havana neighborhood. A tall, flashy sign reading “The World’s Most Famous Cuban Restaurant” beckons visitors to its cafeteria-style digs, outfitted in green upholstery and chandeliers that pay homage to its namesake French palace. This culinary landmark is best known for its Cubano sandwich, but save room for other classic plates like fried pork chunks served with rice, beans, and sweet plantains. A walk-up ventanita (“little window”) makes ordering a colada coffee and a fresh guava and cheese pastelito a breeze. (versaillesrestaurant.com) —M.P. FORTLAUDERDALEILLUSTRATED.COM | JULY/AUGUST 2022

Florida’s Greek village, Tarpon Springs, offers a glimpse at the Hellenic culture, from sponge diving to tiny shops selling blue glass eyes to supper clubs with loud Greek music and patrons dancing the zeibekiko. These are all good reasons to visit, though most people come for the food. Hellas Bakery has all the classic sweet and savory baked goods (try the galaktoboureko, a semolina custard wrapped in phyllo dough and drizzled with honey syrup), and Hellas Restaurant makes a mean saganaki—flamed tableside, of course. The menu is rather vast, featuring just about every Greek dish you can imagine. Is it as good as you’d get in a taverna in Athens? Maybe not, but it’s a fine alternative when you can’t get to the real thing. (hellasbakery.com) —D.N.

FIORELLI WINERY & VINEYARD Perhaps the most traditional of all Florida’s wineries, Fiorelli Winery in Bradenton has been making dry, semi-sweet, and sweet wines fermented from grapes for 20 years. The Fiorelli team produces nine wines on their scenic property, which overlooks acres of Muscadine-filled vines. The Breeze variety—a blend of Noble and Valvin Muscat—is a medium sweet wine that makes for a lighter riff on the classic rum mojito. The winery also regularly hosts events with live music, wine tastings, and food. (fiorelliwinery.com)
BY JULES ARON hile Florida might seem like an unlikely choice for a wine destination, it is actually one of the original homelands of American wine. Spanish missionaries harvested native Muscadine grapes to make wine as early as the sixteenth century, and Florida is currently home to around 20 certified wineries. These wineries and additional vineyards produce wines from a variety of Muscadine grapes as well as tropical fruits and citrus varieties—many of which make a great base for cocktails. From traditional vineyards to lush courtyards and oceanfront destinations, Florida’s wineries and their flavorful creations are worth exploring. Here’s a look at five properties and their unique wines.

KEEL & CURLEY WINERY
Rum, sugar, mint, lime— the Cuban mojito needs no introduction. For days when you fancy something lighter, this lowerproof option is sure to satisfy. 1 oz. white rum 1 oz. Fiorelli Breeze wine ½ oz. lime juice ½ oz. simple syrup 8 mint leaves Mint and lime wedges or wheels to garnish In a shaker with ice, add all the ingredients and shake thoroughly. Strain into a glass with ice and garnish with mint and fresh lime.
For a more unconventional wine experience, visit Keel & Curley in Plant City. Here, instead of vineyards, you’ll walk through fields of blueberries. In Florida, blueberry wine production comes in second behind grape, and Keel & Curley is one of two main producers with the Florida Farm Winery seal of approval (the other is Island Grove Wine Company in Hawthorne). Using Southern Highbush blueberry varieties— which are most adaptive to Florida’s temperate winters—vintners ferment the berries with the skins on, just like with Cabernet or Merlot. The resulting wine is complex in flavor, with a nose that most resembles a Cabernet or Syrah. Keel & Curley makes three types of blueberry wines, ranging from sweet to semi-sweet to dry, as well as a blueberry rosé, a black raspberry Merlot, a wild berry Pinot Noir, sangria, a strawberry Riesling, a peach Chardonnay, and a key lime wine. (keelfarms.com)
The official cocktail of Wimbledon, the quintessential Pimm’s Cup is made with Pimm’s (a gin liqueur that oyster bar owner James Pimm created in the 1840s), lemon juice, and ginger ale, served over ice with an abundance of mint and fresh fruit. The Somm’s Cup calls for a dry blueberry wine for a refreshingly light, fruitforward variation. 2 oz. Pimm’s No. 1 1 oz. Keel & Curley’s dry blueberry wine ½ oz. lemon juice 2 oz. ginger beer, to top Cucumber spear or slice, mint sprig, seasonal berries, and citrus to garnish
In a Collins glass, add Pimm’s, wine, and lemon juice and stir. Add pebble or crushed ice, top with ginger beer, and stir gently to mix. Garnish lavishly with cucumber, fresh mint, berries, and citrus.

SCHNEBLY REDLAND’S WINERY You won’t find any Muscadines or traditional Florida wines at Schnebly Redland’s Winery in Homestead. Instead, this “southernmost winery in the United States” is home to specialty wines made from exotic fruits such as avocado, mango, lychee, passion fruit, guava, and coconut. Take in the views of the covered courtyard and waterfalls while sipping on a glass of tropical fruit wine. Frequent luaus with DJs and fire dancers up the fun factor even more. Schnebly Redland’s wines are ripe for making mixed drinks. The chocolate passion fruit wine, for example, boasts subtle cocoa notes that are delightfully spotlighted in this riff on the New York Sour. (schneblywinery.com)
STRONG TOWER VINEYARD & WINERY
The Cobbler is a pre-Prohibition cocktail made with Sherry, sugar, and fresh fruit that is shaken and enjoyed over crushed ice. Author Charles Dickens popularized this nearly two-centuries-old drink when the titular character of his novel The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit described his delectable first sip. This modern version uses Strong Tower’s own Port. ½ oz. fresh lemon juice 5 berries 2 oz. Strong Tower’s Reserve Port ½ oz. mezcal Fruit and citrus to garnish

In a shaker tin, muddle the berries with the lemon juice. Add the Port and mezcal. Shake and strain over crushed ice. Garnish with fresh Florida fruit and citrus.

Nestled on 11 verdant acres in Spring Hill, Strong Tower Vineyard & Winery is well-known for its Norton, Ison, and Carlos Muscadine grapes. It also offers fruit wines (when in season) including blueberry, strawberry, and even apple blossom. In total, the winery makes more than 15 wines, all of which are produced, bottled, and labeled on-site—and some have even won awards at the Florida International Wine Competition. One of Strong Tower’s most unique wines is the Reserve Port, which is made from the rich Norton grape and features flavors of dark chocolate, black cherry, and plum. (strongtowervineyard.com)
The perfect balance of fruity red wine and smoky-sweet bourbon, the New York Sour (also known as the Continental Sour or the Southern Whiskey Sour) is a classic for a reason. This sour cocktail dates back to the late 1800s and includes a red wine float, which adds both texture and acidity, as well as an appealing crimson hue.
2 oz. bourbon 1 oz. lemon juice ½ oz. simple syrup (1 part sugar, 1 part water) 1 ½ oz. Schnebly Redland’s chocolate passion fruit wine
In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, add bourbon, lemon juice, and syrup. Shake well and strain into a glass over ice. Pour wine over the back of a spoon to float on top of drink.

Nestled 25 miles outside Orlando, Lakeridge Winery & Vineyards is Florida’s largest premium winery. The 127-acre property boasts a picturesque landscape of rolling vineyards dotted with hybrid grapes such as Stover, Suwannee, and Blanc du Bois as well as varieties of Muscadines including Carlos, Welder, and Noble. Among Lakeridge’s most popular bottles are the Southern Red and Southern White sweet wines, the semi-sweet Sunblush, and a semi-dry Chablis, all blended with different Muscadines. Other choices include the Pink Crescendo, a sweet sparkling wine ideal for Florida’s tropical climate. Stop by Lakeridge on a Saturday or Sunday for Weekends at the Winery, complete with live music, food, and—of course—wine. Also, if St. Augustine is on your summer travel list, stop into San Sebastian Winery, Lakeridge’s sister property located in an old East Coast Railway building. (lakeridgewinery.com) «

A Grand WELCOME The long-awaited Four Seasons Hotel and Residences Fort Lauderdale has arrived, and with it comes an elevated dining concept. Meet Evelyn’s, where coastal Florida cuisine intertwines with eastern Mediterranean gastronomy. The restaurant’s name is an homage to Fort Lauderdale luminary Evelyn Fortune Bartlett, in honor of “the beauty she bestowed upon our city.” And much like its namesake, there’s a lot to love about this new gem, from the ocean vistas to the diverse culinary program helmed by chef Brandon Salomon. Here, everything down to the ice cubes in the Plantation Punch (a combination of Arak, pomegranate, marsala chai, and Topo Chico) is a work of art. On the menu, unexpected flavors mingle in starters like freshly leavened stone-fired pita with hummus and shaved truffle, and the the yellowfin tuna nayeh (minced tuna with puffed bulgur). A standout is the Australian Wagyu beef wood-smoked skewers—presented with dry ice to bring that “wow” factor tableside. The desserts offer their own level of excitement. Make things easy by ordering a trio of delights: the cardamom doughnuts with rose syrup; the tropical fruit pavlova with a mango center and passion fruit-banana cremeux; and the dark chocolate pavé featuring halva, black sesame ganache, tahini shortbread, gray sea salt, and almond. JAFFA Chef Yaniv Cohen, better known as “The Spice Detective” and the winner of the season finale of Best Leftovers Ever on Netflix, has made his Hallandale Beach debut with Jaffa, following an outpost at MIA Market in the Miami Design District. Named after the oldest port in Israel, Jaffa explores the flavors of Israel and the Mediterranean with a kosher-style menu that’s dairy-free and uses Glatt kosher meat, complemented by Middle Eastern spices. The restaurant’s design reflects the vibrant Israeli city with repurposed wooden furniture, vintage Israeli travel posters, and an LED sign that reads: “Home is Where the Hummus is.” Take its cue and order the hummus and pita along with the crispy artichoke hearts. For mains, try the short rib tagine served with cauliflower and potato mousse and the grilled salmon on cedar plank. (jaffamiami.com)

Pitaya, or dragon VI fruit, loves the hot sun and CO CA S E C FRAN blooms on a full moon. This exotic, egg-shaped fruit is typically crimson in color (though it can be white or yellow) and it grows on cacti. It tastes like a cross between a melon and a kiwi. Cool off with a delicious, frozen treat that can be prepared in advance to make any summer gathering extra special. —Jules Aron
Tipsy Pitaya Boats Ingredients 1 dragon fruit ½ cup Pinot Noir (or your preferred wine or spirit) 2 tbsp. lemon juice
Cut the dragon fruit into two even halves and use a spoon to remove the flesh (yielding about a cup). Add the dragon fruit flesh and the rest of the ingredients to a blender and blitz until smooth. Pour the mixture back into the dragon fruit shells or into a sealable, freezer-proof container. Freeze for 4-6 hours or until frozen. Remove from the freezer and enjoy.

GARDEN PARTY Discover all things in bloom with The Hot Glass Gallery at the Wiener Museum of Decorative Arts in Dania Beach. Five contemporary American artists are debuting numerous “gardens” as part of the museum’s latest “Gardens of Glass” exhibition, including Dale Chihuly, whose colorful blown glass artworks are inspired by the Japanese art of arranging flowers. Some artists’ gardens even advocate for activism: Jenna Efrein’s sculptures touch upon the future of the Everglades, while Ann Orvieto’s sunflowers stand in solidarity with Ukraine.
