PUBLISHER’S MESSAGE

FLORIDA THRIVES ON reinvention, renovation and renewal. Visitors and residents alike embrace the international influences that drive design, architecture and building in this tropical paradise. Architects, designers and builders from across the state and around the world have collaborated to deliver spectacular design projects for the Florida market. For nearly 30 years, Florida Design has reflected the design sensibilities of this most unique environment. Founder Jeffrey Lichtenstein and his family created a resource consulted by homeowners, designers and future residents for guidance, direction and inspiration. This first issue under Palm Beach Media Group endeavors to build upon that success and extend the magazine’s reach into the future. We are most grateful to our editorial and design team members who labored long hours to bring this edition to life. We are also thankful for the support shown by the advertising, design and marketing partners who appear in these pages. We look forward to continuing the best of what Florida Design brings to its readers every issue:

EDITOR’S MESSAGE WE DO IT ALL SO YOU CAN FOCUS ON LIVING.

BE IT BOLD AN D VIBRAN T or soft and subdued, color draws the eye in and captivates the imagination. Brilliant blues and bright greens, pinks, purples, reds, and vivid yellow — these are the hues that color the exciting interiors inside this issue of Florida Design. On the cover, interior designer Janie Molster reimagines a warm, 3,500-square-foot bungalow nestled in the idyllic Village of Golf. With a whimsical flai , the designer’s fearless use of color takes center stage as she pairs a plethora of textural prints with large-scale florals and wide stripes that come together in a contrasting mélange that blends effortlessly. Interior designer Steven La Fonte imbues a condo on the Intracoastal Waterway in West Palm Beach with a bright palette of wild pink, cobalt blue and dark red. Working with the style-savvy homeowner, a former opera singer, La Fonte designed a chic and cosmopolitan apartment by splashing colorful hues among a mix of exotic wood, polished marble and plush velvet. Amelia Island sets the scene for a 4,400-square-foot home, where the husband-and-wife team of interior designer Marsha Faulkner and architect Jason Faulkner turns a blank canvas into an artistic tour de force inside and out. Brazilian Ipe wood and large expanses of glass dominate this virtually transparent structure that invites oceanic hues and panoramic views throughout. On another note, we’re thrilled to be a part of the Palm Beach Media Group family. Renowned across the industry for its high editorial standards and production values, PBMG is dedicated to enriching the Florida Design reader experience through an exciting content mix that includes the best design from around the state.u

A delicate balance between form and function shapes visually captivating pieces

furniture

Striking in stainless steel, the limited edition “Strata” cabinet by MATTIA BONETTI is visually appealing yet fully functional.

REINIER BOSCH’S “Secret Lagoon” is from The Melting Series, a family of bronze design objects that capture moments unraveling in time.

BRABBU Design Forces’ deep red “Colosseum” console table brings the most enduring icon of Italy to any design setting.

Inspired by time travel to the Neolithic period in Ireland, BRABBU Design Forces’ “Ardara” bronze console wrapped in gold leaf exudes a peaceful ambiance.

Rock and roll! With its 3D optical pattern, Cappellini’s “Drum” chair by MAC STOPA is a sculptural burst of energy reminiscent of the hexagonal drum pads from the 1980s.

At Rugs by Zhaleh, we conceive of rugs as fine works of art. They should be as stunning to behold as the art on your walls – and just as integral to your home’s design. We think of our showroom as an art gallery that exhibits the works of skilled and imaginative artisans. According to Julie Emami, the owner of Rugs by Zhaleh, a hand woven rug should be “a breathtakingly beautiful and modern masterpiece that complements the home’s unique personality.” Inspiration Platinum

n a land as diverse and expansive as South Africa, respecting tradition and the environment informs every aspect of life. When that intent translates into design, the aesthetic expression can be as monumental as the surroundings. AndBeyond Phinda Homestead, which reopened a year ago after a complete rebuild, is one such example. Located in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal, this sole-use safari villa is designed as a contemporary bush farmhouse — an architectural marvel that is subservient to the land. Fox Browne Creative, of Johannesburg and London, imagined a four-bedroom compound with ample living areas, both indoors and outdoors. The company’s design approach was one of sustainability and celebration of heritage. A flat roof design allows water to be collected and used for irrigation. Walls are crafted from repurposed

railroad ties; rammed earth, including clay and sand from the nature reserve; and recycled timber. “The mud from the reserve was painstakingly done in layers,” villa manager William De Jager says. “It’s an incredible piece of economics.” The bespoke interiors combine blunt lines — both in terms of architecture and furniture — with locally sourced artisan goods. All art is by South African artists, including the woven tables and baskets crafted by the local Zulu people. In a nostalgic gesture that straddles the contemporary and traditional, the draperies in the great room reimagine a painting of the bush landscape, custom transferred by Evolution Product. In the bath, the reed tassel curtains are sourced from a local roadside stall, and pottery and textiles come from regional co-ops in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. “The design is all iconic moments,” De Jager says, “all to celebrate the local culture.” The motif opens up to nature, and often invites it. The infinity-edge pool, for example, juts out into the bush and sometimes attracts wildlife — the very reason guests come here in the first place. andbeyond.com u

true representation of interior designer Erin Paige Pitts’ design ideology, this 5,042-square-foot home nestled in Boca Raton, Fla., is calm, comfortable and modern. Pitts’ eponymous, luxury residential design firm specializes in coastal interiors. “Our single mission is to create homes that reflect our clients and their coastal lifestyles,” she says. “Our love of the sea inspires our design aesthetic.” Given carte blanche and a blank canvas, Pitts framed distinct sections with layers of design details and furniture arrangements that create visual interest. “I added paneling to the foyer and inset

TRULY IRRESISTIBLE Knowing that spec homes must have universal appeal, a longstanding team knew just what details should be remembered Jason Lynn and Elaine Aitcheson, Decorators Unlimited, Palm Beach Gardens, FL Mitch Kunik and Brian Collins, Affiniti Architects, Boca Raton, FL builder Robert Muir, Muir-Yoras Homes, Boca Raton, FL landscape architecture Malcom Miller, Land Form Design Group, Inc., Fort Lauderdale, FL text Marina Brown | photography Daniel Newcomb, Jupiter, FL

ot many things last for 25 years, but the collaboration between Affiniti Architects and Decorators Unlimited has endured as the two companies move into their second quarter century working together. And they seem to have celebrated with a bang. “This nearly 10,000-square-foot golf course home just had the last piece of furniture placed by our senior designer, Elaine Aitcheson, when a couple walked in and bought it on the spot,” interior designer Jason Lynn says. With a soaring entry that floods light through 25-foot-high windows, the curb appeal of what Affiniti Architects calls “rustic Caribbean contemporary” design proved irresistible. Contemporary, yes, but from the carved roof brackets of solid cypress to the interior details, an organic influence is evident and the overall impression is memorable. That’s just what the design team wanted. “Framed moments, visual vignettes. When you’re appealing to an unknown buyer, you want certain things to stand out … something they can refer back to,” Lynn says. The front door is an example. Set as a pivot door, in size it could have been

Visually echoing a cross between paper lanterns and interplanetary spacecraft, Bover’s “Siam” fixtures diffuse artistically staggered light above the modern Italian stylings of Constantini Pietro’s stunning dining table and the ergonomic curvature of the “Oltre” chairs.

above left: SIW’s unusual pivot door garners attention from all comers of the living room. Here, a pair of acrylic-armed chairs from Shahrooz, a deep-seated sofa by Pianca and a polished walnut table from Swaim shape a central conversation grouping atop a warmly colored area rug from Stark.

a double door, but here, the walnut panel swivels on a central fulcrum, allowing entry on each side. The ceiling designs and light fixtures become eye-catching impressions that suggest organic shapes. From slatted inserts to latticed walnut strips and whimsical pinwheels, the ceilings in this home are filled with drama and movement. And the conversation will remain lively thanks to the chilled wine room with space for almost 1,000 bottles of vintage and vins du pays. Not only practical, the wine room serves as a visual break between the living room, dining room and kitchen. The architectural design of a sunroom with glass doors that pocket and sweeping views of the golf course green turns an integral part of the home’s interior into an open-air social space to enjoy Florida’s tropical outdoor lifestyle. Simple room lighting becomes art with circles of walnut-stained poplar that could recall Balinese umbrellas, acrobatic sea urchins, or Bahamian peaked roofs. “Creating a home that will appeal to 80 percent of people who see it is no easy task,” Lynn says. “But our team seems to know how to get it right.” u

ush gardens and comfortable furniture scattered about the faded checker board decking create the ultimate outdoor living space in one designing couple’s home in Key Biscayne, Fla. “No part of the home, including the exterior, should look as if it came straight off a showroom floor,” says homeowner James Duncan, who cofounded his eponymous design company with his wife Miriam 16 years ago. The Duncans used Asian, African and English antiques to make an outdoor living space feel as interesting as the interior. Each piece is a standout and together they work in perfect harmony. A dash of Bohemian style blends with a touch of tropical Key Biscayne attitude to create this one-of-a-kind outdoor area perfect for relaxing or entertaining. u

Ocean views dominate the mind’s eye in this breathable and contemporary home that spotlights the homeowners’ passion for water and wine

right: “Inside, there’s just something about the tectonic look of the stairway that really is the spine of the house … a pretty sculptural element,” interior designer Marsha Faulkner says.

HUGGIN G THE PRISTIN E SHORES OF FERN AN DIN A Beach on Amelia Island, Fla., this stunning 4,400-square-foot home naturally transverses the divide between inside and out. Slates of Brazilian Ipe wood panel the front exterior as well as the interior stairway wall, while Italian porcelain tile seamlessly flows from the facade through a glass entry that opens to panoramic ocean views. Interior designer Marsha Faulkner along with her husband, lead architect Jason Faulkner and his team, designed this slender home to fit both the client’s every desire and a restricted lot size. “It’s a narrow house but based on the concept of three shifting planes,” architect Craig Davisson says. “The house is unconventionally stacked with the living area located at the top level and the bedrooms on the lower floors.” left:

In this virtually transparent architectural structure, the use of glass allows views of the ocean to pour in from all sides. “For shading, we utilized a cantilevered roof and a rain screen casing that allows for a more energy-efficient envelope,” architect Jason Faulkner says.

Artefacto’s Brazilian bentwood “Pipa” chair adds an organic component in the living room, where Thayer Coggins cocktail tables catch the rippling blue waves of the custom area rug.

The interior is a presentation of clean sophistication that is at once contemporary and livable. “One of the neat features that is just beautiful to look at is the interior stairway and the way that each of the treads appear to float away from the wall,” Marsha says. A simple color palette dominated by white tones provides an unadulterated stage for the homeowner’s choice of accent — a vibrant ocean blue that ripples throughout the home. In the living room, the dominantly linear architectural features of the home are softened with the gentle curves of the furnishings. Polished stainless steel cocktail tables pick up splashes of blue from the area rug, circling them in a swirl of reflection.

A main draw on the third floor is the wine room with its rustic flavor and the transparent wine enclosure that showcases the homeowners’ impressively curated collection. A walnut wall of cabinetry warms the room and continues through to the kitchen — an open, clean and streamlined eat-in area. The homeowner forwent the idea of having a formal dining area in favor of an oversized glass waterfall bar. Positioned next to the breakfast counter, the island dining area expands the seating area from a different height. Appliances are expertly and purposefully hidden to accomplish a minimalist atmosphere, while globe light pendants provide an understated focal point that spotlights the culinary space.

8/27/19 4:22 PM

Interior designer Marsha Faulkner derived inspiration for the wine room from the wine chateaus of France. A rustic communal table and simple Warren Platner barstools invite family and friends to uncork and sip wine while enjoying the views.

Once again blurring the boundary between inside and out, the architect positioned glass doors that slide open to expand even the most private of spaces to the outside for the pinnacle of natural luxury. Working with a view as grand as the ocean, an interior designer’s challenge is to complement the sights, not rival them. In a project limited to a vertical expression, the answer was a transparent masterpiece with a contemporary scheme that is inviting and elegant. above right: In the kitchen, Cattelan Italia barstools easily seat eight at an oversized ThinkGlass waterfall bar with its LED lighting system that changes the colors and brightness factor for atmosphere.

left: “We wanted the master bath to focus on the hierarchy of the ocean,” the architect says. “That’s why the private space has an all-glass end that showcases the water views.”

POISED IN THE HEART OF THE HISTORIC DISTRICT of Prospect Park in West Palm Beach, Fla., this waterfront home features breathtaking views of the Intracoastal Waterway as well as the legendary Mar-a-Lago Club on the island of Palm Beach. This 8,800-square-foot residence owned by interior designer Hilary Musser and her husband, Dale Kahle, offers endless options for large-group entertaining as well as intimate evenings enjoyed poolside beneath the stars.

“We chose Prospect Park because we love the charm of the neighborhood,” Musser says. “We enjoy views of some of the most spectacular historic homes across the water on Palm Beach Island and watch the sun rise every morning outside our expansive windows. Each house here has its own style and character from a specific time period — ours represents the modern era.” Before planning the design of their home, the couple took a trip to Northern Italy where they toured the marble quarries in Carrara. After visiting 10 different suppliers, it became clear that post-installation maintenance on huge marble slabs would be more trouble than they wanted at this point. “Over the mountain in Modena we could purchase porcelain slabs in the likeness of marble, the same size but much thinner and more consistent,” the designer says. “Our first visit was to Iris, where we fell in love with the statuary marble that is now the main flooring found in all the common areas of our house.” A specialty wall announces each room. In the foyer, a gorgeous three-piece wall hanging inspired by Lalique provides an artistic focal point. The great room takes style cues from the sleek Italian design of the kitchen outfitted in Carrara marble and accented with stainless steel and wood.

The elegant stairway foyer features a brilliant red, high-back wing chair and a captivating Lalique-inspired, three-piece silver wall hanging, all from Christopher Guy. A vintage Lucite table and an Art Deco three-tier chandelier overhead are from David Duncan Antiques. Handcrafted by glass artist Kristine Daniel, the “Coastal Gems” vase gives a nod to the interior palette beyond.

N earby, plush furnishings in the living area provide plenty of contemporary seating, while an iconic-style chandelier tucks into a specialty ceiling treatment to illuminate the space. The private spaces are not overlooked. A fabulous slab of colorful backlit geodes, inset into the wall and framed in stainless steel, draws the eye in and around the study. Upstairs, the highlight is undoubtedly the master suite, which spans the width of the entire top floor. The bedroom walls are covered in a shimmery custom treatment from Vahallan, while Zanotta’s white leather-clad “William” sofa and “Maggiolina” chair from 4141 Design provide vivid contrast. Featuring two balconies and a large expanse of windows, this quiet sanctuary boasts amazing water vistas from nearly every viewpoint. At the back of the house, Musser strategically designed a lavish outdoor oasis for relaxing, cooking, and entertaining. “Our absolute favorite places are beside the big fire pit and next to the pool,” she says. “It shimmers with fiber-optic starry lights and makes for a fabulous romantic evening.”

A large painting by Italian artist Diego Santanelli creates a focal point in the master bath that features floo -to-ceiling travertine slab walls from Florim. A shapely free-standing tub from Boffi takes center stage amidst streamlined Robern vanities that appear to float.

WHEN YOUR CLIEN T IS adventurous, fun, savvy and a close friend, you possess a unique set of keys to unlock a brave new world of design. “While I put the puzzle pieces together, my client very much knew what she wanted and liked,” interior designer Kara Hebert says. “She was totally uninhibited with any color or pattern I showed her, so putting her home together was a fun process ... we had a blast.” A fusion between Coastal and Regency style, this 10,000-square-foot home, in the exclusive community of Admirals Cove in Jupiter, Fla., left: Fun from the get-go, an aqua-hued bike carrying a basket full of sunflowers sets the scene outside this Coastal-style white stucco home featuring blue Bahama shutters and SIW’s wood louvered door with a striking tin awning.

contains everything imaginable and more for this family with young children and pets to enjoy year-round. “It’s a little bit of luxury with all the bells and whistles, six bedrooms, a library, den, exercise room, media room and game room,” Hebert says. “It even has a dog wash.” The color scheme runs the gamut with lots of turquoise, bits of navy, bright coral, jungle green and hot pink hues. “We used the punchy, juicy colors my client loves, set against a backdrop of white walls and a shell-beige limestone flooring for relief,” Hebert says. In the living room, the client’s very favorite fabric, “Enter the Dragons” linen by Jim Thompson in fuchsia, marigold, sea-foam and green, sets the tone and provides inspiration. Rich and rambunctiously beautiful, it creates spot-on impact on the accent pillows and a Lee Industries ottoman. However, it is the CR Laine wood-spindle chairs, covered in a sea-foam geometric print, that take a more prominent role. “They have such beautiful sculptural backs and we wanted to show them off,” Hebert says.

A painted wood detail creates an inlay diamond pattern on the kitchen’s glass-fronted cabinetry in complement to the stone mosaic and mother-of pearl backsplash. UMI quartzite countertops continue the jewel-like sparkle.

The fun continues in the kitchen, where fresh white cabinetry sparkles with a shimmering mosaic backsplash. For a lace-like touch, the glass fronts mimic the style of the counter stools splashed with an aqua hue that follows through in the pantry. “The deep aqua hue gives a pop of color that plays peek-a-boo with a mostly white kitchen,” Hebert says. Lighthearted and airy, the nearby breakfast nook is furnished with forgiving pieces perfect for little children. Easily wiped clean, the hardy finish on the wood table from Ethan Allen and the special coating on the animal-print chair pads make the space virtually spill-proof. Outside, the patio, pool and expansive yard beyond serve as a family-friendly entertainment area oriented to take advantage of South Florida’s near-perfect climate. All this adds up to a home the owners appreciate, a great fit for their lifestyle. “It was so much fun. The wife and I joke that she and her husband are ready to sell it and build another,” Hebert says. “And they will, too, mark my words!”

GETTING THE SIZE JUST RIGHT Be it a big house or a more modest one, the various residences of former Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino and his wife, Claire, have always been “home”

INTERIOR DESIGNER PHYLLIS TAYLOR HAS JOINED forces with N FL Hall of Famer Dan Marino and his wife, Claire, on many residences. From massive Mediterranean estates to their current 3,000-square-foot newly renovated ranch house in Weston, Fla., Taylor has come to know the colors, the favorite pieces, and many of the domestic needs of this very busy family. “The Marinos have six children — they needed a lot of space,” Taylor says. But now, with the older children on their own and the last two in college, those space requirements changed. Even though above : Relaxing poolside in chaises from Janus et Cie or barbecuing in the backyard with friends shapes a perfect weekend for homeowners Dan and Claire Marino. “Since my favorite color is green, the pool area with its lush landscaping is a favorite spot,” Claire says.

To create an expansive central hub, walls were moved and the ceiling height lifted to 13 feet. “For the Marino family, the kitchen is the heart of the home,” interior designer Phyllis Taylor says. “Claire loves to cook and having stainless steel state-of-the-art appliances was a necessity.”

the square footage may have altered, the desire for openness, the strong devotion to cherished possessions, and the dramatic palettes of their previous homes would remain. Attaining all of that would be a challenge in a home originally built “in the early ’90s,” Taylor says. “After eliminating the outdated popcorn ceilings and most of the interior walls, there was still the concern for a distinct entry transition into the living area. The outdoor foyer created a unique space before ever entering the front door.” Framed with wide-striped draperies from Jeffery Michaels, the entry doubles as a pleasant place to take in evening sunsets. Matching the patterning of fish scales on two art pieces to the metallic geometry on Monica James’ wall pieces gives the space a lively, yet unified vibe — a perfect preamble to the colors and lines inside. From the entry, a small living area gives way to the kitchen. “Here, we provided a stylish solution with elevated drawers in the middle of a large island counter,” Taylor says. “The drawers serve as convenient catch-alls and the elevation gives more counter space as well as hides the disorder from meal preparation.” The Marino’s ability to reimagine their beloved pieces in new environments set the stage in both the living area and family room, where “Syrian” chairs that pay homage to the Middle East find contemporary homes away from their original Mediterranean placements. A green and white area rug from N iba expands patterns into ellipses and curves.

pot rack immediately draws the eye to the kitchen. The lacquered wood cabinetry and Waterworks’ tiled backsplash wall are elegantly neutral as color is introduced in the adjacent living area and family room.

From the pass-through in the kitchen, guests can be served at the dining room’s British Colonial dining table. The imposing walnut chest from N ormandy stands as a proud period piece in a 21st-century locale. Overhead, a white wooden chandelier appears almost iconically French, while the Foo dog sculpture and Chinese faience offer their own version of chinoiserie. In a master bedroom bursting with color, Taylor balanced the strength of Phillip Jeffries’ coral grasscloth wall covering with patterns to tempt the eye. But in a custom oversized bed by Ralph Lauren, upholstered in plush leather and covered in pale and

embroidered linen from Niba, there is the perfect restful respite. The interlocking tracery of a Stark rug unifies the room. To enlarge the master bath, the designer incorporated a new dressing room and closet beyond. With gray marble flooring to match the marble mosaic of the walls, the coral-colored covered bench becomes a star. Having done a half dozen projects with the Marinos from a 15,000-square-foot home to one the fifth of that size, Taylor says that “with 22 years as friends and collaborators they think along the same lines.” And now, it seems this family has found the home perfectly scaled to their every need.

Sutton Draperies’ plantation shutters and valance dress the window in complementary contrast to the dazzlingly coral-hued bedroom wall. With the resonating sparkle of the sunburst mirror and Jalan Jalan’s table lamp, Claire still finds the master bedroom one of the most tranquil spots in the house.

SWEET SERENITY A sunny and sophisticated bungalow in South Florida’s Village of Golf dazzles with originality, bold statements and vibrant color interior design Janie Molster, Janie Molster Designs, Richmond, VA builder Mouw Associates, Inc., Delray Beach, FL text Marina Brown photography Gordon Gregory, Henrico, VA

INTERIOR DESIGNER JANIE Molster delights in working with couples who know their own minds and can only bolster the creative impact of the ultimate design. With owners Tom and Mary Horton, that potential was compounded. Armed with notebooks of color swatches, furniture designs, and fabric choices that Mary presented to Molster, an initial consult quickly became the third and perhaps most delightful collaboration with this client. And as a former model and actress, Mary has always been comfortable with color and bold statements. Yet, to make a really big statement you must have the right foundation. Though nestled in the idyllic setting of Village of Golf in sunny South Florida, this serene, 40-year-old house necessitated a structural gutting. “It’s not a big house,” says Molster of the 3,500-square-foot home.

left: Like a summer parfait, the living room in what interior designer Janie Molster calls a “bungalow” is filled with lush colors and bold design. Creatively mixing the old and the new, the designer pairs Lee Industries’ sofa with Century’s Klismos-style chairs, an antiqued mirror cocktail table and a vintage Moroccan area rug to shape a sweet and sunny spot.

“No wicker. No fish prints on the walls. Definitely not beach ,” homeowner Mary Horton says. But color there would be. Brunschwig & Fils’ blue tendrils climb the walls, and Romo’s lime and sherbet bands pull open to welcome nature’s touch.

First, the kitchen and baths were completely redone and a third bedroom’s space was added to the master suite. The owners were scaling down from a large Virginia home and wanted this to be a light-filled locus for entertaining — a place where every day would be “sweet.” “N o wicker. N o fish prints on the walls. Definitely not beachy,” says Horton of her vision. But color there would be. Eschewing seascape blues, she was attracted by shades of lime, peach, pink and brilliant turquoise. In the living room, wide swaths of Schumacher’s faux silk taffeta draperies in bands of butterscotch and salmon appear like frosting against pale walls. White wood frames Klismos-style chairs dressed in a fresh marigold velvet linen, while an antiqued mirror cocktail table sits atop a Moroccan rug that dances in pinks and peach. However, what became the lynchpin of the home’s entire design sits grandly in a corner. “I threw my car into reverse when I caught sight of it in an antique store,” Molster says. “My client right: In the dining room, a bright red console draws all eyes. Everywhere there are subtle glints of gilt, from the banding in the lamps to the Greek key pattern of the table from Tritter Feefer. The delicate, imperfectly curved arms of the Italian fragment chandelier from Yorkshire House Antiques pays homage to baroque and rococo influence.

A pared-down table of verdigris iron and lacquered wood designed by Molster joins Lee Industries’ banquette in a sunny yellow print and Palecek’s woven-rattan, Klismos-style chairs. Arteriors’ chandelier with its torch-like tapered arms lends a touch of drama.

The family room exudes a subtle ’70s feel, most notably asserted with vintage table lamps in a powerful retro green. Gilded glints repeat in the metal-framed cocktail table and a pair of silver-studded occasional tables, all from Worlds Away. Colorfully patterned accent pillows give a creative nod to artist Lindsay Cowles’ abstract hanging above the sofa.

loves chinoiserie, and here was a stunning peach and gold secretary that combined whimsy and elegance that set the tone for everything else.” The dining room combines a seeming abandon to color with aristocratic detail. Here, a custom-designed dining table is surrounded by vintage Chippendale-style chairs in soft gray upholstery. Overhead, an Italian fragment chandelier feels right at home, while wide-plank wood flooring anchors the space in warmth. Like a painter with a palette, Molster turned to the abstract by artist Lindsay Cowles for inspiration to color the family room and breakfast area. The open spaces are simply curtained in woven shades, while pink, green and turquoise hues splash across accent pillows and elegant seating. Leaving nothing to chance, even book covers are chosen for their complementary colors.

The master bath is a color respite from the joyous intensity elsewhere. But it too is not without design. Imposing a wooden grid across a wide expanse of mirroring suddenly gives the sense of depth. The crystal prisms of the wall sconces and the addition of the owners’ porcelain elephant table are subtle touches of elegance. But entering the master bedroom is like watching a curtain go up on the stage set of a much-anticipated play. Here, the designer’s deft handling of form and mass is seen. Using the magnitude of the sweeping pink linen velvet headboard, anchored by a gray silk and gilded bench, Molster covers the wall with mirrors and gilded sculpture. In a simple but inspired treatment for draperies, the designer added a vertical band of scalloping curves. Circular mirrors repeat the smaller spheres in the glass table lamps, while the owners’ sculptural candelabra mounted above the bed brings a sense of peace.

The master bedroom’s quiet drama peaks with the silver gilded bedside chests from Bernhardt, their serpentine fronts reflecting light from all sides. A vintage Italian chair and a gold-finished bench share the same gray silk upholstery from Kravet. All together, this becomes a meticulously serene space.

Though homeowner Mary Horton is entranced by beautiful fabrics and colors, in her master bath the palette is washed clean. Yet fine details remain. The slender profile edge of the vanity is given an Asian touch, while Topcu’s striated Calacatta marble flooring makes its own mosaic.

Outside, the lime greens and fuchsias from Mother Nature’s hand echo the vibrant hues inside. And then there are the natural woven textures. “I don’t like sets,” Molster says. Instead, she styled the loggia with sisals, weaves, rope and other substances that appear to have been acquired lovingly over time. Here, the rug is styled with woven abaca — a strong Manila hemp. The midnight-blue cocktail table is of twisted rope. Most charming of the area’s accoutrements is the nod to the owners’ love of Chinoiserie. Propped at a jaunty angle, a tall parasol topped with a turquoise shade seems a statuesque reminder that the sweet serenity of the sun-filled tropics is only a step away.

MODERN WITH A TROPICAL NOD

The living room delights with Versace’s mid-century modern velvet chaise in a striking black-and-white animal print that punctuates the vintage marble-topped Noguchi side table with its black-lacquer base. Waves, an eye-catching abstract painting, reflects the coastal scene outside.

DESIGNER ANIL KAKAR MET THE OWNERS OF THIS BAL HARBOUR condo when they entered his Miami showroom looking for inspiration. The couple wanted to gut their 2,000-square-foot residence, add hurricane windows and create interior spaces that took advantage of the beautiful water views. “The wife was designing the space herself but we instantly hit it off,” Kakar says. “While she has a good eye, we decided to collaborate using a mix of custom pieces from my showroom with lots of art and sculpture.” Emphasizing an open plan that was both plush and user friendly for entertaining, they selected custom mid-century modern, art deco and eclectic pieces for the main living areas. They finished the walls in off-white with a touch of taupe, created lighted drop-ceiling details

for definition, and anchored the space with large slabs of gray tile. “The floors were challenging because the apartment is so vast yet had to look normal and comfortable,” Kakar says. “We had many options and ultimately decided on tiles that look like a refined, elegant cement flo .” Contrasting the neutral backdrop, they chose pops of orange, yellow, blue and green instead of utilizing a typical beach theme. Blue and White by artist Jay Luiz highlights the foyer in prelude to the well-appointed living room. Here, a custom sea foam green sectional joins a pair of art deco club chairs, a lively chaise atop a cowhide area rug from Brazil, and a Yamaha grand piano to shape a social space reminiscent of an elegant coastal night spot. “The wife is learning to play the piano and wanted the living room to have a lounge feel when entertaining guests,” Kakar says. “A vintage French sunburst mirror adds a glamorous splatter of gold.”

White stone tiled walls add a textural touch in the master bath, where a citrus green wall punctuates the sophisticated contrast of dark and light.

A vintage porcelain dog from Nihil Novi whimsically presides over the family room. Wrapped in a graphic pattern, custom ottomans mix and match with the vibrant Trina Turk accent pillows atop the gray sectional sofa. A trio of wall mirrors framed with antique wood reflects the view.

Kakar chose a large banquette for the dining room — a favorite gathering spot for family members including two grown sons who visit. A vintage Eero Saarinen “Tulip” table with a custom wood top and painted white base couples with vintage chrome and quilted-leather chairs. Nearby, an artsy bar area provides extra seating as guests continue the conversation at a 1980s high top with authentic art deco stools cushioned in vibrant yellow velvet. Yellow is repeated in the bold abstract by French artist Michele Beaujardin leading into the custom Armadi kitchen, while the family room comes alive with splashes of orange. A vintage 1970s brass cocktail table centers the deep-seated sectional and a curvaceous settee. “This social grouping creates needed intimacy in the middle of this large room,” Kakar says. The bold and sophisticated Florida theme continues in the private spaces as well. “The owners were eager to bring the sunshine into their new home ... but without a cliché beach theme,” Kakar says. “They loved the end result and asked me to design two more projects for them.”

THE CHALLENGE OF USING BOLD COLOR AND CREATING PURE sophistication in a diverse array of rooms isn’t always easy to accomplish, but this project turned out to be a memorable experience for interior designer Steven La Fonte. When homeowner Cathy J. Solomon commissioned him, she had her own vision for her condominium on the Intracoastal in West Palm Beach, Fla. “Cathy gave me specific directions,” the designer says. “She loves vibrant color and Roche Bobois, and I love vibrant color and Fendi Casa, so we went shopping in the Miami Design District to select furnishings from both resources.” After a major renovation of this 6,000-square-foot residence, La Fonte designed a colorful, cosmopolitan and chic apartment for Solomon, a former opera singer, who also spent years in the cosmetics industry. “I wanted comfortable elegance, a home that was not stiff,” Solomon says. “Steven designed spaces that are unique … there is nothing else like it.”

The living room is stylized and feminine with an abundant use of pink and taupe hues. The gentle curve of the “Cortes” sofa by Heritage adds to the seductive appeal, while velvet accent pillows continue the riot of color. Fendi’s club With“Conrad” an emphasis chairs in a tea rose pink velvet join a trio of cocktail tables to complete the setting.

on fine lighting, towering columns and architectural illusions command attention in the dining room. Conch shells of all sizes make the perfect accessory, while glass doors open to reveal picturesque courtyard views.

Step inside the foyer, where a commissioned canvas by Argentinian artist Lautaro Cataldo dresses the wall above an exotic macassar console custom designed by La Fonte with champagne leafing. “I love the shimmer of the rose gold,” he says. Bold blue — a personal favorite of the homeowner — dominates the dining room. Here, Fendi Casa’s “Audrey” chairs covered in cobalt blue velvet graciously pull up to Roche Bobois’ oval dining table with its ebony hued top and sculptural statuary marble base. N earby, the spacious living room is an operatic aria of color, passion and perfection with panoramic water views. A wild pink-and-white animal print area rug instantly astounds, while the whimsical custom art (epoxy resin with gold leaf) by Italian painter Alex Turco pays homage to the owner’s time in the cosmetic industry. “The delicious lips are painted in a red that Cathy supplied from her favorite Tom Ford lipstick,” the designer says.

A chic combination of smoked oak wood and cobalt blue matte lacquer wraps the kitchen, where “elite black” polished marble countertops add drama. The transition to the charming waterfront breakfast area is seamless with a continuation of the home’s colorful palette. “We took advantage of the size and shape of the area to have a banquette and table that seats large and small gatherings,” La Fonte says. In the adjacent family room, a fireplace with its white pearl finish and azul Bahia stone surround adds charm and warmth. The deep-violet sofa feels right at home with a smattering of brightly patterned accent pillows and an oversized ottoman positioned perfectly to invite the feet to rest. Yet, when it comes to the ultimate in relaxation, Solomon’s favorite space is her dramatic master bedroom. The velvet bed is seductive in shades of Rosa, vino and burgundy with cognac colored leather and polished brass inserts. Unafraid to experiment, La Fonte admits this residence became one of his favorite projects because the homeowner allowed him to be adventurous with so much color. “I created a glamorous yet comfortable home which is very sexy and fitting with the sophistication of the owner,” he says.

Ornare’s custom cabinetry pairs with a polished brass mosaic backsplash from Porcelanosa, polished black marble countertops from Opustone and Wolf’s gold-plated hood to create a special sparkle in the kitchen. The Bentley cut crystal champagne holder and Baccarat flutes add to the elegance.

A CELEBRATION OF WATER Working with clients who can’t have too much water in their lives, architect Mark Sultana creates a sleek yet comfortable home on Longboat Key overlooking Sarasota Bay

IMAGINE SUNNING ABOARD A 44-FOOT SAILING CATAMARAN … on the water with the wind at your back, a pervasive silence filling the air while dolphins provide entertainment by diving beneath your boat. That’s a scenario few of us will ever experience. But the couple that owns this home on Longboat Key and, post retirement, has started a sailboat charter company, knows about life on the water. “I think that’s why we not only have water at our house but also in and around it,” says the wife and first mate. She is also the interior decorator of this over 6,000-square-foot home set on nearly an acre of land edging Sarasota Bay. In search of a place to live year-round, she and her husband viewed almost 30 properties in the area, many of them set on canals. But when they saw this piece of land overlooking

Jewfish Key and the Sister Keys, their canal budget quickly expanded to one that would allow for bayfront living. “When we saw this spot, we knew we wanted it,” the wife says. The lot had a run-down 1930s frame house that was only standing because “the termites were holding hands,” says architect Mark Sultana, who the couple hired after seeing his other designs in the neighborhood. Drive through the gate just past a sign designating this

Upon entry to the front courtyard, polished black landscaping stones, glass panels and warm wood details catch the eye. When guests reach the landing at the top of the front steps, a clear-glass floor offers a view into the 53-foot-long koi pond beneath that is illuminated with energy efficient mood lighting.

In the great room, stained panels of furniture-grade maple plywood are invisibly mounted on a custom-crafted aluminum frame that provides an organic backdrop for a 2,500-gallon saltwater fish tank designed by Living Color Aquariums. home as “Enchanting Waters” and the first hint of why it’s so aptly named appears as the blue glow of water reflects on the stucco facade. The light show is from surface ripples and butterfly koi swimming in a 53-foot-long pond. Glass doors announce entry as the eyes are immediately drawn to the great room’s 2,500-gallon Indo-Pacific reef aquarium — the husband’s boyhood fascination that has grown through the years to become a major attraction in this couple’s water world. The tank measures 15-by-4 feet and is almost 5-feet deep with 3-inch-thick glass walls. In fact, it’s so big that Sultana had to design a steel cage to support it, and he depressed the slab and added drains under it in case of leakage. “The view of the bay from the great room is very

beautiful, but there’s something to be said about seeing all these fish and the coral up close,” the wife says. In the home’s main living areas, “the goal is to maximize the view of the bay,” Sultana says. The sleek kitchen and dining space were designed to integrate with the great room, where windows extend to a 22-foot-high ceiling. The open floor plan gives the couple plenty of room to entertain both inside and out. Glass doors slide open, inviting guests to enjoy the waterfront, infinity edge pool with its dramatic gas fire pit Step through a hidden panel door into the master suite, where the scenic bay view continues and thick shag area rugs tickle the toes in plush contrast to the glossy porcelain

flooring polished to a high sheen. Just off the bedroom, the master bath warmly welcomes with a wall mosaic of white marble and glass tiles that transmit light, including that from the flaming fire troughs beside the tub. Cobalt-blue Italian lacquer cabinetry shapes a curvaceous double-sink vanity that flows to a second spot to view the aquarium. A shade ascends to reveal a portion of the back of the big fish tank to add a whole different take on water activities in this spa-like space. An upstairs balcony is a relaxing place to gather and, once again, enjoy water views. And although the view from here is spectacular, there’s an even better one from the glass-enclosed rooftop patio one flight up. “It’s our favorite place to look out at the bay and even see the Gulf of Mexico beyond,” the wife says. Since this couple’s house was built, they have seen an increase of boat traffic in the channel behind their property — even tour boats make their home a photo op. “It’s the first house we’ve built from scratch,” the wife says. “From start to finish, it’s 100 percent us.”

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS This traditional lakefront residence in Windermere debuts a contemporary new look with a fresh aesthetic but remains true to its Mediterranean roots Brianna M. The expanded pool and patio area is furnished resort-style with oversized lounge chairs from Janus et Cie. The custom pool fabricated by Artistic Pool Design has a Beadcrete finish, which gives the water extra shimmer.

WHEN JOE AND KIM RUSSO BEGAN SHOPPING FOR their dream home, they didn’t have to look too far. They were very enamored of their waterfront property on Lake Tibet in Windermere, Fla., and ultimately decided to renovate the existing Mediterraneanstyle residence. “The homeowners had raised their family there and loved everything about it,” says interior designer Brianna Sheehan, whose youthful aesthetic and exuberance immediately appealed to the right:

Interior designer Brianna Sheehan’s design approach tends towards neutral and textural, adding artwork to provide pops of color. “I wanted to be true to the home’s warm Mediterranean vibe, but with cleaner lines, neutral furnishings and a lighter touch,” Sheehan says.

Brianna Michelle_FD_Greatwater_pgs_071019_KM_FINAL.indd 2

8/28/19 11:50 AM

A social space forms in the great room with a custom, plush gray sectional and CFC’s simple rectangular cocktail table. Dark wood ceiling beams, wavy accent pillows, and a neutral-toned, striated area rug add layers of textural dimension.

couple. “It just made sense to make significant changes to what Joe and Kim already owned,” the designer says. Architect Terry Irwin and builder John Taylor came on board to help redesign the dark, heavily ornamented house in favor of a lighter, clean-lined transitional style that would also remain true to its Mediterranean roots. “We touched everything inside and out,” says Sheehan of the reimagined 7,270-square-foot home. Inside, Peruvian travertine tile flooring, dark-stained wood baseboards and hand-troweled off-white walls lend contrast. But it’s the ceiling details that add organic warmth and spatial definition to the home’s flowing rooms that connect by archways. “I wanted to accent all that lightness with rich contrasting materials,” Sheehan says.

174 FLORIDA DESIGN VOL. 29 NO. 3

Brianna Michelle_FD_Greatwater_pgs_071019_KM_FINAL.indd 3

8/28/19 11:50 AM

“With that in mind, I specified reclaimed wood beams for the great room, kitchen and master bedroom.” The great room is intimately arranged with a custom, U-shape gray velvet-clad sectional from Verellen topped with multiple accent pillows. Beyond in the breakfast nook, six scoop-armed leather chairs circle a white oak-topped table that is perfect for casual dining when it’s just the Russos and their four adult children. above :

The home’s Tuscan-inspired kitchen is created with dark wood cabinetry and open shelving from Monarch Kitchen & Bath. An island topped with marble from Mystic Granite & Marble imparts timelessness, while a custom copper hood designed by Sheehan lends an Old World feel.

8/28/19 11:50 AM

“Texture is my palette,” says Sheehan of her sophisticated approach to decor. “I tend to design more with texture and less with color.” N owhere is this approach more apparent than in the kitchen, where the use of raised-panel cabinetry, antique bronze pulls, a custom copper hood and Old World marble countertops lend a Tuscan vibe. A pendant in mercury glass hovers above the island, while four woven metal pendants illuminate the breakfast bar. “I love these barstools with their unfinished leather edges — the raw detail warms things up and adds softness to the kitchen’s hard finishes,” the designer says. A softer feel continues in the master bedroom suite. A deep color palette of warm taupe and woodland green blends with a mix of luxurious fabrics such as cut velvet, silk and wool. The four-poster bed visually balances a pair of mirrored fretwork armoires on the opposite wall while adding a reflective quality to the space. “My aim here was to create a retreat-like feel, a special getaway from the rest of the home,” Sheehan says. above : A pair of sleek, dark-stained Hickory Chair armoires helps disguise the TV in the master bedroom while providing extra storage. A console adds contrast in weathered white atop Britannia Flooring’s oak floors finished in a dark stain.

With an emphasis on fine lighting, towering columns and architectural illusions command attention in the dining room. Conch shells of all sizes make the perfect accessory, while glass doors open to reveal picturesque courtyard views. Beneath reclaimed wood beams and a Kalco drum chandelier from Ferguson, plush furnishings and neutral textures shape the elegant master bedroom. A pair of plush armchairs, an Oly cocktail ottoman and a small accent table from Bernhardt form a relaxed sitting area by picturesque windows.

This resort-like feel is also captured in a large lanai with stunning lakefront views. The dining area’s custom teak table is reclaimed from a 100-year-old antique bridge and is lined with woven fiber chairs. “The space works for both intimate gatherings and larger groups,” the designer says. “As a younger designer, I find age either works for you or against you. It definitely worked here,” Sheehan says. “The Russos are young-at-heart and they trusted my aesthetic 100 percent.”
