A UNIQUE COLLABORATION between designer Rob Turner, Phil Kean Design Group, architect Will Miller and the homeowners, this striking 4,300-square-foot New Smyrna Beach, Fla., home conveys a contemporary and casual feel with an open floor plan and lush garden views. “From my initial meetings with the owners, I realized the desire and the need to provide for very free and almost whimsical use of color and shapes, and the potential for their personal artistic objects to give a ‘poetic depth’ to the home,” Miller says. To maintain a harmonizing order in the house, the architect designed it with a unifying theme of materials and neutrals. “I encouraged Rob to be very deliberate and free with the use of color and shapes when creating his playful interiors,” he says.

WHEN A NEW YORK-BASED DESIGNER, Frank de Biasi, was hired to create a brand new seaside home in Palm Beach, Fla., that looked like it had always been there, he studied the history of the island’s architecture. Homeowners Bob and Mia Matthews, who met de Biasi in Palm Beach, asked him to design a warm and inviting, Mizner-inspired family home. “Mia, Bob and I were inspired to design an adventurous home using these styles in vibrant colors such as turquoise, green, blue and white with pops of pink.” The clients’ main directive — the new 15,000-square-foot home is to look like it’s been around since the “Glory Days” of the 1920s. 14

INTERIOR DESIGNER JENNY PROVOST’S introduction to her client — a businessman, who moved here from South Africa and became a major success — was a “short” conversation that lasted for a few hours. Provost soon realized that her client was not only a risk taker in business, but also in design. The result of that meeting is this 7,000-square-foot Cape Coral, Fla., home the designer describes as “imaginative modern.” The hospitality begins with the exterior. Guests feel welcome even before reaching the pivoting glass front door, as the house itself seems to beckon family and friends to enter. Inside, the main living area instantly captivates with the expansive views of the outdoors that reach out to the Caloosahatchee River emptying into the Gulf of Mexico and the horizon beyond.

BUILT ON TRUST, THE TEAM WHO DESIGNS your most personal spaces knows what you like, what you used to like, and has the eye and skills to sometimes lead you to someplace new. However, for the owners of an 8,000-square-foot, Planation-style getaway on Islamorada in the Florida Keys, changing styles wasn’t the plan. Having worked with the owners on several projects, including their first Plantation-style home in the Keys that sits only 50 feet from this newer version, interior designer Mark Manardo went to work right away with his design colleagues Janet Nolte and Robert Cloutier. “The owners simply loved everything about the first house, and as grown children with their families returned for holidays, they needed another house ... pretty much like the first,” Manardo says. While the initial idea had been a family annex of sorts added to the larger primary residence architecturally designed by Michael Miller, in the end, this slightly smaller, newer home designed by architect Roger Janssen was more suited to the owners’ current lifestyle. “The new home’s layout actually provides more open living space,” Manardo says. Thus, with a selection of interior furnishings that are “grandchildren-friendly,” the families merge the good times back and forth between the two houses.

“WHO WOULDN’T LOVE LOUNGING IN a balinese bed,” asks interior designer Jennifer Garrigues of the peaceful poolside setting in the lush tropical gardens of one couple’s home in North Palm Beach, Fla. This spacious 5,000-square-foot vacation home belonging to Jill and Alan Rappaport is conveniently located near the Atlantic Ocean and close to Palm Beach. When it comes to decorating, Garrigues and her longtime clients and good friends are on the same page. “We both love interesting textiles, vivid color, the exotic … anything unusual from places like India, Cambodia, Vietnam or Bali,” the designer says. To the Rappaports, it made perfect sense to approach the redesign of the 1970s house with Southeast Asia in mind. And in keeping with the design aesthetic, Garrigues teamed with architect Rustem Kupi, builder Randy Webb and landscape architect Elliott Templeton to create a harmonic balance that blurs the boundaries between inside and out.

THOUGH IT WAS ONE OF THE LAST UNITS to be acquired, this luxurious 27th-floor penthouse in a prestigious building in Palm Beach County, Fla., is by far one of the most spectacular condominiums Bryan Willoughby has ever built. “It’s hard to imagine it was just a raw space when we came on board in 2015,” says Willoughby, who first introduced the owners to interior designer Lorraine Rogers-Bolton. She was very excited to become an integral part of the design team. “We’re not just about furnishings and fixtures,” she says. “But also about selecting materials for the entire condo.” With water surrounding the 6,400-square-foot penthouse on three sides — the Atlantic Ocean to the East, the Intracoastal to the West and the Palm Beach inlet to the South — the home’s dazzling backdrop was true blue. “The water views gave us lots of focal points,” says the designer, whose furniture arrangements were conceived so that every room would take advantage of the stunning coastal vistas.

INTERIOR DESIGNER ROBERT BROWN’S CHIC MIAMI BEACH condominium on Lincoln Road is all about detail. He has placed colorful art on the walls, designed rooms built around an atrium and maintained smooth, polished terrazzo flooring. “My parents were English and I grew up in major houses with large gardens,” Brown says. “Now I have a stylish home with no hassle. I have no view except for my atrium and the sky … and I love it!” Brown wanted his 2,300-square-foot, third-floor apartment to offer a sense of place. And what a place it is located in the $65 million mixed-use project ingeniously imagined by developer Robert Wennett and the world-renowned architectural firm of Herzog & de Meuron.

Shattering traditional design, the building itself is a work of art with exaggerated ceiling heights, panoramic city vistas and no exterior walls. Retail shops and restaurants shape the ground level, while upper-level luxury loft residences are built around interior courtyards with no views to the outside of the building, other than upward. Brown’s eclectic living room showcases his love affair with contemporary art, sculpture and vintage furnishings. Styled for both large and more intimate gatherings, the dining room is another showcase for the designer’s contemporary art paired with a 1970s Italian brass table and dreamy white Milo Baughman chairs clad in Mongolian goatskin. “I like a mix and match of 1970s pieces together with contemporary art,” he says. “Their sophisticated, creative and beautiful execution gives a perfect balance in my home I named ‘Villa Nirvana.’”

BRITISH COLONIAL IN THE TROPICS The Design Of This Award-Winning Naples Home In Aqualane Shores Is Inspired By A Love Of 19th-Century British Colonial West Indies Style INCORPORATING THE STYLE OF THEIR HISTORIC 1880s Ohio home in Cincinnati’s historic district into their new home on the sparkling Gulf Coast of Florida was important to homeowners Marnette and Paul Perry. Just steps from the beach and strolling distance to the Old Naples shopping district, their 5,400-square-foot residence was inspired by the historic home they left behind, and their desire for a tropical aesthetic. The couple spent a great deal of time with architects Randall Stofft and John Cooney, as well as builder Scott Weidle, to develop the essential concepts of this British West Indies Colonial-style home. The Perrys also worked closely with interior designer Molly Grup, making every decision together, a process that included choosing which antiques to bring with them to Naples. “The team paid such attention to the details that I live with and enjoy every day,” Marnette says.

CHARLES CLAYTON CONSTRUCTION CHOOSING A YEAR-ROUND RESIDENCE in one of Florida’s most breathtaking locations means the sky is the limit. JULIE KEATEN-REED JULIE KEATEN-REED BLENDS TRADITIONAL Eastern minimalism with contemporary Western aesthetic. Her work begins with sumi ink, an ancient Japanese medium of soot and water. But her unique style emerges when she breaks from the strict tenets of brush-and-ink drawing and incorporates expressive pops of color. Julie grew up in Wyoming and draws inspiration from her childhood trail rides across the Continental Divide. After graduate school, she and her husband taught English in Japan for five years. Julie again immersed herself in the landscape on cross-country bike trips. She spent 35 years absorbing scenery before deciding to paint. When Julie returned to the United States in 1999, she unwrapped brushes and ink she had purchased in Japan and launched a career. She delights in the evolution of her work, experimenting with canvases and textures. Rather than forcing a conclusion in her paintings, she prefers to deliver a framework for the imagination.
