As their name suggests, chemical sunscreens are made with chemicals that dissolve into the skin and can trickle into the bloodstream. Mineral sunscreens, on the other hand, sit on top of the skin and use ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to repel UV radiation.

iving in a sun-powered playground like South Florida touts many rewards, like a healthier immune system and heightened levels of happiness. Damaging ultraviolet rays, unfortunately, can wreak havoc on our delicate dermises. Safeguard skin from spots, wrinkles and, heaven forbid, harmful malignancies with SPFinfused products that mix in extra benefits, like smoother skin. Here are six to try.

RAYS OF LIGHT: UVA and UVB are ultraviolet rays, and both are bad. UVB causes more burns and epidermal injury, while UVA degrades collagen and is more responsible for wrinkles and actinic keratosis. UVB rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so double your protection with sunscreen, protective clothing and a wide-brimmed hat.

A HEALTHY TAN: Thanks to

advertising, tans have gotten a reputation for being “healthy.” The bad news is that any color change, even a base tan, is not safe and reflects damage already done. The safest tan is out of a bottle and never in a tanning bed.

SPF 101: When choosing sun protection, pick products with an SPF of 30 or higher. The FDA doesn’t give much credence to SPF levels over 50, so don’t go crazy looking for SPF 100.

Sunscreens are neither waterproof nor sweatproof and can be rubbed off easily with a towel, so reapply them every 80 to 90 minutes or after a dip in the pool.

W

e’ve only been talking for a couple of minutes when McHenley Castillo begins to tear up. He’s embarrassed about it, maybe because he’s sitting in the office of his unflappable boss, who’s sitting right across from him.

His boss, Bonnie Clearwater, the executive director and chief curator of the NSU Art Museum, runs out to fetch Castillo a box of tissues.

He grabs one and dabs at his eyes.

“Sorry,” he says, “I wasn’t expecting that.”

We had begun to talk about his grandmother. He’d see her when his family went to Colombia when he was a kid, and he would always marvel at her collection of art on the walls.

It wouldn’t be until years later that he found out she had painted them. By then, it was too late.

“She hasn’t been well for some time,” Castillo says, wiping away a new round of tears. “I never got a chance to ask her about her paintings.”

Maybe, he wonders now, if his grandmother’s artistic side is what inspired his own. Growing up in Oakland Park, Castillo attended art schools starting with North Andrews Gardens Elementary through Dillard High, concentrating on the clarinet. He has an associate’s degree from Broward College, a bachelor’s in marketing from Florida International University, and is now working on an MBA at Nova Southeastern University.

While Castillo’s clarinet performances are behind him, he now spends his days planning the future of art in South Florida. He heads NSU Art Museum’s new young professionals group, the One East Society, which has plans to become a regional breeding ground for the artistic, the adventurous and the soon-to-be-if-not-already influential.

The organization is something Clearwater intended to create not long after she took over at the museum six years ago. She had done the same thing at her old job, running the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami and forming the MOCA Shakers. It’s not that young professional groups bring in money for museums—generally they’ll cost more to operate. It’s more about planning for the museum’s future. “You need to see it 30

as the pipeline,” Clearwater says.

As she takes a seat again across from Castillo, she explains that it had to be executed perfectly if it were to succeed, so she let it percolate. Last year, with younger people filling the residential towers in South Florida downtowns and the Brightline trains connecting them, Clearwater says she realized it was time to act.

She hired Castillo, who had collected internships in the art world, government and marketing. Aside from experience, though, he has a quick-to-smile personality—the tears, for his grandmother, are rare—and exudes a charm about him that makes it seem like every person he meets is soon to become a close friend.

Among Castillo’s first tasks was to assemble a committee of young professionals, and he ended up with names you know if you run in South Florida art or real estate circles or maybe just business in general. There’s Andres Bonell from Bell Rock Capital; Brooke D’Avanzo from Chewy; Patricia Kneski from General Provision; and Megan Probst from Compass.

The success of putting together the committee resulted in a speedy jump in

membership­—more than 100 people are currently signed up. Castillo hopes those numbers will double by next year, with the short-term goal of expanding into Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties.

Membership means access to social events that One East Society organizes and access to art-related events, like a recent talk with Doug McCraw, who co-founded the FATVillage art district in Fort Lauderdale. In December, Castillo is planning to organize a One East Society field trip to Miami Art Week, which will be the first of many organized activities for its members.

For Castillo, starting the group has been something of a culmination of all the things that got him here. Growing up, his parents emigrated from Colombia, his dad working construction and his mom cleaning homes.

They didn’t understand his fascination with art at first, but now he is leading a group that could set the future for a museum.

“Coming from an immigrant family, it has always been about asking, ‘What can I do with my life that’s meaningful?’” Castillo says. “My whole life has been about how I can better not only my life, but the people around me.” gulfstreammediagroup.com

ust outside of Vail, Colorado, a day at Beaver Creek should be broken up like this: meet your ski instructor at 9:30 a.m.— when the lifts open—for a private ski or snowboarding session; take a break around noon for a gourmet lunch at the ski-in SaddleRidge restaurant, which doubles as a museum of American Western artifacts; and then head back out for more experience on the slopes until “Cookie Time” at 3 p.m.

The group that came up with the “Cookie Time” concept was likely tasked with the challenge of coming up with a way to kindly tell athletes to get off the slopes. They probably pondered how to go about doing this for a moment, until a member with a sweet tooth called out: “I’ve got it! Let’s lure them down with warm cookies.”

The ski destination bakes 500,000 cookies each year for a season that starts in November and runs through April.

Employees dressed in aprons and chef ’s hats carry trays to the bottoms of the lifts daily to greet tired skiers and snowboarders with still-gooey delights.

During opening week (Nov. 27 to Dec. 1), the resort town will host its 15th annual World’s Best Chocolate Chip Cookie Competition, during which five finalists who submitted their recipes are asked to prepare 1,000 cookies for a public vote. The winner’s recipe will be used throughout the season to cap off days of gliding down 150 trails.

Speaking of après ski, a few steps from the slopes is Toscanini, a restaurant and bar positioned by an ice skating rink, and the ideal spot for grabbing an Aperol Spritz or a glass of wine from the 100-percent Italian list, which receives annual recognition from Wine Spectator.

s a kid in Hungary, Laszlo Bollok spent his summers inside, learning to bake from his grandmother, while his coevals were outside playing.

Their favorite dish to make was a sponge-like cake with sour cherries she’d pick and he’d peel. When Bollok was 14, the pastry chef at the establishment where he worked as a chef took notice of Bollok’s raw talent and urged his grandmother to foster his path into pastries. Twenty years ago, he moved to New York City and worked at Le Cirque and The Mark Restaurant by Jean-Georges, among others.

WHEN ONE DOOR OPENS “I moved to Florida six years ago and worked at The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne and the Four Seasons in Brickell. I was ready to try something else when I found One Door East about six months ago.

hattering every obstacle that has been put in her way, this Philadelphia native is creating light, love and acceptance in our city and throughout the country with her art and passion for giving back to the community. An artist for 25 years, Pratico’s murals are around town at Green Bar & Kitchen, Hair Circus and Rhythm & Vine, but next year she will be undertaking one of her most impactful projects to date right here in Broward.

THE FIRST TIME “I always wanted to be an artist. In kindergarten, I was introduced to finger painting when they put a smock on me and told me I was allowed to get paint on my hands and make a mess. My home life was the opposite—very tidy, and art was not encouraged. But in that moment, I found that freedom in being creative.”

GIRL NOTICED “Growing up in a low-income area, there were low expectations for me. But I knew I’d be more than that, and I knew I was supposed to make a difference somehow. I finally figured out I could do it with my art—I had a voice but what did I want to say?

HOLOCAUST MEMOIRS “I wanted to do something local with Girl Noticed and really make an impact at home. I’ve had the opportunity to work with several Jewish organizations, and I wanted to do something with Holocaust survivors, especially women. As women, even if we’ve lived a rich life, as we get older we tend to become invisible and I didn’t want their stories to disappear.”

So, I sat down one weekend afternoon on my patio four years ago and created Girl Noticed, a community mural non-profit program that spotlights unique females and their incredible contributions to our society. Each mural is temporary but is tied to a permanent message of love, strength and recognition. I want to show girls they have value and I notice them. So far I’ve created 34 interactive murals in 15 states, and 300 people have attended my self-esteem motivational art workshops, which I lead together with each mural.”

FROM THE BEGINNING “I picked up a camera when my son, Bradley, was born 21 years ago because I wanted to take photos of him. But I’ve never had any professional training. I had been working at Home Depot for 20 years when I started posting a few shots on Instagram. My wife, Lori, is my biggest fan. Without her support and encouragement to follow my photography dream, I wouldn’t have had the guts to quit Home Depot and start shooting full time about two years ago. I just feel the need to create, and it really excites me when other people enjoy my creations.”

BEST PART OF THE JOB “The traveling! I never left the state as a kid. Now I get to see the world.”

FAVORITE THING TO SHOOT “I love to fish and be on the ocean. In 2012, I bought a GoPro and started shooting video, then I bought a drone and became an FAA-certified drone pilot two years ago because I love to shoot aerial shots of buildings and the beach.

Currently, I am a drone videographer and photographer for ‘Uncharted Waters with Peter Miller,’ which airs on the Discovery Channel.”

BROWARD LOVE “I grew up in Miami and moved to Broward 20 years ago. Back then it was nothing like Miami. I have loved watching it grow—seeing all those cranes in downtown. I also love the art scene here with FATVillage and the MASS District.

It’s really become an up-and-coming community.”

UNEXPECTED CRAFT “I grow and shape bonsai trees. I have like 20. And I grow orchids, too.”

graffiti artist by trade, Marcus Borges took the leap into the art world with his creations 10 years ago and never looked back. It’s challenging not to get caught up in people’s opinions and be afraid, he says. Thankfully, his fearlessness pushed those thoughts out. Today, his murals are creating happiness and intrigue in our community, and he wouldn’t have it any other way.

BEST KNOWN FOR “I have been painting in FATVillage for 10 to 15 years.

One day I painted a 3D piece, and Doug (one of the district’s founders) was impressed by it, so we started talking about Leah Brown’s design, Idea Journey, which was going onto a 75-foot wall of the Extra Space Storage building. It took me one month to paint floating 15 feet above the ground. My style is very retro and nostalgic to the ‘80s—it reminds people of Trapper Keepers, ‘80s video games and retro comic books. It’s a reflection of my childhood and myself.

I was really into math and science as a kid, too, so that’s where the geometric pieces come into play.”

GRAFFITI GURU “I grew up in the hip-hop community and am still very

HOMETOWN HERO “I grew up in a poor town in Brazil, and every year I go back home and paint. You see so much poverty, and I just want to try to lighten up the community and add color. I get emotional every time. I think of my 9-yearold daughter when I see these kids in the streets. I want to show them that I came from where they are, and they could be doing this one day.”

atural stones and organic materials create a comfortable, relaxed environment inside this coastal residence.

Design duo Charlotte Dunagan and Thomas Diverio had previously designed the home of this client’s sister, so when an opportunity to work with the family arose again, it was a no-brainer.

As the firm’s founder, Dunagan prides herself on the experience she gives her clients in coming up with individual concepts for each project. “I love the human connection and creating a home that functions for my client’s way of living,” she says.

Professionally, Dunagan has been in the industry for more than two decades—however, she’s been designing her entire life alongside her mom, who was an interior designer in France and would tote her around to job sites.

EX T E R I OR: FRONT The manicured driveway of the 11,589-squarefoot home acts as one of the exterior’s focal points with a concrete and grass abstract checkered pattern that’s both beautiful and functional. The entryway’s coral stones and white railing add to that texture. A flat roof designed to look similar to a wood shake roof, even in its color variations, is actually cement, a much sturdier material.

E N T RA N CE FOYE R The client’s love for blue is showcased from the start, with a cobalt blue door that adds pizzazz to the entrance. Similar blue hues were also carried throughout the home’s décor. A stunning floating staircase is the star of the foyer with a black powder-coated iron railing, wood-capped handrail and custom wood tread. At the top of the stairs hangs a family heirloom—an antique silk shawl. Flanking the glass double doors opposite the front door are four paintings by Cuban artist José María Mijares from the client’s private collection.

D I N I N G ROOM The focal points in the dining room are the stunning chandelier designed by Baylar Atelier and the custom wine cellar. Metal chains are suspended from a polished stainless steel structure to illuminate the room, while the wine cellar reflects the light and gives the room a vibrant feel. A custom Bon Vivant

The 200-bottle temperature-controlled wine cellar has a mix of storage variations and display cases for those extra-special bottles.

L I VI NG ROOM The design team took on the task of incorporating several furniture pieces from the client’s former home, including the chairs and sofa, in this room. They did, however, reupholster the pieces—the sofa with a gray prewashed linen and the chairs with a cobalt blue velvet fabric. The glass coffee table, Lucite end tables and painting above the sofa are all from the client’s collection.

O UT DO OR TERRACES Located off the great room, the outdoor terraces are the most convivial rooms of the house.

The client’s family loves to entertain outside, so ensuring plenty of space for the entire clan to gather in the backyard was one of the top priorities for the design team. Complete with a barbecue, summer kitchen, roller shades for extra protection from the sun and mosquitoes, and even a fireplace, the space’s décor extends the relaxed waterfront atmosphere inside with tongue and groove ceilings in a stained gray hue, coral stone columns and plush outdoor furniture.

G RE AT ROOM The blue theme throughout the home all started with the eye-catching agate semi-precious island countertop in bright blue and turquoise, which the client fell in love with. In conjunction with the outdoor terraces, the great room is the main living space of the home with its kitchen, family room and breakfast nook. Integrated oak ceiling beams give the room a casual, warm feeling while the different cabinet door profiles in white lacquer and gray oak give it a contemporary twist. The breakfast area, large enough for the whole family, is elegant but approachable. A wet bar with extra storage sits adjacent.

CA B A N A B AT H The duo wanted to give this space a whimsical feel, so they used Cuban tile to pay tribute to the client’s heritage, added a plank board accent wall and designed the shower frame in a dark bronze frame to match the plumbing and lighting fixtures.

G U E ST B E D ROOM A Bungalow Classic bush-hammered iron canopy bed with leather headboard and tufted beige linen bench sit on top of a soft area rug in gray and blue tones. Simple silver leaf J. Alexander night tables are finished off with glass lamps and linen shades to ensure the window light is never obstructed. The bathroom in dark gray lacquer with custom millwork contrasts the bedroom’s soft color palette, but a white glass countertop reflects the light and gives the space a feeling of airiness.

MAST ER BED ROOM AND FOYER The master bedroom’s pitched vaulted ceiling is accented with an Aerin two-tier glass pearl chandelier and silk wallpaper from Phillip Jeffries. The Ralph Lauren nightstand lamps with rounded glass balls mirror the chandelier’s design. J. Alexander end tables in walnut, metal and glass add texture while embracing the king bed with its custom deep gray and taupe velvet headboard, and the room’s bamboo silk shag rug from NIBA Designs.

Before stepping into the home’s main sanctuary, the master has a vestibule that has a custom Bon Vivant walnut cabinet table with Urban Electric glass-stem sconces, a beveled mirror from Powell & Bonnell, and a custom display case for family photos and books. The best part of this room is a secret integrated door that leads from the entryway straight into the walk-in closet.

MAST ER BATHROOM Made with only two materials—Thassos premium polished marble and AKDO ash gray polished mosaic tile—the design team wanted to play with texture in the master bathroom by using the tiles in the shower and along the bathtub wall. The tub, from BainUl-

tra, also has a beaded white marble mosaic detailing around it. Vessel sinks sit on the white marble countertop while beaded light fixtures mimic the bedroom’s beaded chandelier.

M AST E R CLOS E T This nearly 400-square-foot space with custom white millwork, a marble island and a hand blown glass OCHRE chandelier is a room with plenty of bright natural light and space for every wardrobe piece. Glass displays for exceptional shoes and purses are found throughout the closet, and a window-side vanity is a perfect space to get ready for a night out.

B ACKYA RD The dock, made from dense and durable South American Ipe wood, is decorated with Restoration Hardware aluminum lounge chairs, while the 30,000-gallon infinity-edge pool sits just 15 feet away and is wrapped in glass mosaic tiles with a range of blue hues. From this angle, the array of outdoor spaces the home has can be appreciated. The outdoor design mirrors the interior with organic materials that give the landscape a relaxed, yet tailored, look with coral stone steps and oolite stone planters.

Meredith Marlow Interiors Meredith from Meredith Marlow Interiors and Angel from Atlantic House Painting teamed up to completely transform this two-story condo at The Gale Residences on Fort Lauderdale Beach. Their very busy client entrusted this project under the watchful eye of Meredith Marlow, a local Fort Lauderdale interior designer who does high-end residential work throughout the country. Meredith reached out to the local Sherwin-Williams design representative Clint E. Craven, who provided support to pick just the right color and finish for the space. The final colors were a soft neutral palette, consisting of SW 7014 Eider White and SW 7009 Pearly White. This project was painted with Sherwin-Williams Emerald® Interior Matte and SuperPaint® Flat throughout the entire condo. The client was so thrilled with their new, gorgeous condo that they immediately hired Meredith and Angel for their new waterfront home.

W

hen Trinity Reback, a design consultant with DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen, received a commission to renovate a condominium in the Harbour Ridge neighborhood of Palm City, the project originally included upgrading the kitchen and enclosing a patio to create more indoor living space. It eventually turned into a full-scale gut-and-remodel.

The owners, Beverly and John Martin, were relocating from their primary residence in Kentucky and decided they would retire to South Florida, where they owned a vacation home they enjoyed. “Now they were ready for a forever home, and they decided they wanted it to be here,” Reback says.

The couple chose the two-bedroom-plusden, 2,500-square foot condo in Harbour Ridge largely because it offers a spectacular view of the St. Lucie River. Perhaps because of her years in Kentucky, Beverly had a love for traditional Southern décor, but now she wanted something more contemporary. “We decided to do a modern take on traditional style,” Reback says. “They entertain a lot, and they wanted the home to be casual and comfortable, yet elegant with a classic feel.”

A C AREER CHANG E For Reback, interior design represents a significant career change. “I started in advertising and marketing, but I wasn’t passionate about it,” she says. “Then one morning I woke up and decided I wanted something different, so I went back to school at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale.”

Reback was always fond of decorating. She remembers rearranging the furniture in her room as a little girl and the importance of decorating her college dorm room. “I’d always been passionate about it, but when I was starting out, I didn’t realize it was something I could do to make a living,” she says. “I love seeing the final product—looking at before and after pictures and seeing the transformation.”

CO LO R , COLOR EVERYWHERE For the main living areas, European white oak flooring creates a backdrop that is clean and fresh, yet warm and inviting. White crown molding throughout the home gives a traditional look, and is paired with flat baseboards for a more contemporary style. Walls in the main living areas are also a soft shade of white, but the homeowner loves color, especially navy blue and green, so color became a major player in the design.

T H E KI TCHEN To open up the main living space, a non-load bearing wall was taken down that divided the dining room from the kitchen. “The wall blocked the view of the river from the kitchen and interrupted the whole flow,” Reback says. “We turned the space into a very large kitchen, and now you can walk in and see the view of the river.”

Unlike many South Floridians who prefer all-white kitchens, one of Beverly’s first requests was for navy blue cabinets. Other designers, Beverly told Reback, had tried to discourage that choice. But Reback realized that not only could the colorful cabinets work, they would also be a stunning visual feature. “I loved her willingness to take risks with color,” Reback says. “So many people are afraid of it. She loves navy, but she also loves greens and browns, so we brought the colors of nature into her home.”

To balance the navy blue, Reback installed a white Thassos stone backsplash in a subway pattern, which is carried up behind the decorative white hood and between the upper and lower cabinets. Countertops are white quartz, and recessed and under-cabinet lighting illuminates the workspace. Cabinets and drawers around the perimeter of the kitchen add plenty of storage for Beverly, who loves to cook.

Cabinet and drawer pulls—some large-scale, some smaller for visual variety—have a satin brass finish that matches the plumbing fixtures.

In the center of the kitchen, white quartz crowns a large, 11-by-5-foot island. The custom piece contains navy blue storage cabinets and drawers, as well as a convection oven and vegetable sink. “A lot of people want a secondary color for the island, but she was committed to the

navy,” Reback says. After raising the low ceiling, a tray that matches the footprint of the island was installed.

Suspended from it are two circular brass-and-glass pendant lights.

In one corner of the kitchen is a wet bar area with a drink cooler, sink and coffee maker. Cabinets with mullion glass fronts are both decorative and functional.

“We designed the kitchen with entertaining in mind,” Reback says.

T H E LI V I N G ROOM The living room is another testament to Beverly’s love of color. A pair of blue sofas flank a sea-green rug, all of which she furnished herself. The coffee and sofa tables were handmade by the Martins’ niece, Adrienne Romine, founder of Half Halt, a furniture design studio in Austin, Texas.

B RI N G I N G T H E OU T D OORS I N Enclosing the wraparound patio to increase interior living space was one of the main goals of the project. Poured concrete brought the outdoor floor to the same level as the interior of the home. Impactresistant, floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors replaced the patio screens.

Half of the U-shaped space has lush chairs in which to relax and a dining area that overlooks the river; above the table, ceiling beams house recessed lighting. On either side of the TV are glass shelves that open to the living room, while another opening acts as a passthrough to the bar in the kitchen, inviting family members or guests to stop by for a beverage. Bench seating has storage underneath.

T H E DEN In the den, walls are painted a rich green, creating a dramatic background for a white builtin desk and storage unit with open and closed shelves, drawers and cabinets. To improve traffic flow, a door was added to one side that opens to the living room.

Adjacent to the den is a guest bath, where green patterned wallpaper immediately draws the eye. Beverly liked the wall covering so much, she had a chair upholstered in the same color and pattern for the den.

The design team also pulled out the existing tub and converted the space into a large shower enclosed in frameless glass and lined with navy blue and white glass mosaic tile. Classic white countertops, cabinets and octagon-shaped porcelain floor tiles balance the deep colors. Hardware and fixtures have the same satin brass finish as in the kitchen. An eye-catching mirror has a gold ribbon-style frame.

M AST E R S U I T E In the master suite, the double-door entry changed to a single, creating space for a linen closet. In the bedroom, a navy blue painted wall is the backdrop for a large vintage map of the U.S. that the owners wanted to display. A large white built-in wall unit has a traditionally styled crown, bookshelves, an opening for a TV and storage underneath. A splash of navy accents the white bedspread.

To provide space for enlarging the closet, the team relocated the entry to the master bath, where red textured wallpaper adds rich color.

They also enclosed the commode and removed an angled wall to accommodate a long, straight white vanity with cabinets, drawers and a makeup table topped with white quartz. Suspended over the double sinks are twin glass pendant lights.

GUE ST BE DROOM AND BATH The guest bedroom is more subdued than most of the house. Walls are gray, and the medium-toned wood bed is a traditional style with two tall decorative posts. Woodside tables hold lamps with white drum shades, while a decorative ceiling fan adds a contemporary touch.

In the bathroom, the wallpaper has an abstract pattern in soft browns and grays.

T H E LAUNDRY ROOM The laundry room is both stylish and functional.

Dark blue wood cabinets with satin brass hardware provide ample storage. The polished stone backsplash matches the one in the kitchen. A quartz countertop offers folding space, and a sink can accommodate garments that need to be hand washed. The water heater relocated to a closet to make the space more attractive.

The Martins are delighted with the results. “We wanted something cozy but more contemporary than what we had before,” Beverly says. “We’re very happy with the way it turned out.”

DESIGNER AARON TABER BRINGS URBAN SOPHISTICATION TO A BEACH CONDO.

hen Aaron Taber, a design principal at Fort Lauderdale-based Retro Interiors, received a commission to renovate the dark, dated interior of a condo on Fort Lauderdale beach, the goal was to transform it into a modern, sophisticated space with urban flair.

“The owners love city life, and they wanted to bring a metropolitan feel to their home even though it’s a beach place,” Taber says. “They wanted a style that was architecturally interesting and offered ease of living, but also some formality and elegance.”

Taber, who studied his craft at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, has been interested in interior design since he was very young.

“When my parents would go on trips, I’d rearrange the furniture,” he recalls. “Now I enjoy the oneon-one contact with clients. I’ve learned many things, and I can be a bit fearless with new projects.”

The 3,600-square-foot residence has two bedrooms plus a third that serves as an office and card room. A sophisticated color palette of vanilla, taupe and silver with touches of aqua lends a classic feel, while creamy Italian marble flooring provides a backdrop for the new décor. Crown molding with added trim throughout the home creates dimension and architectural interest.

F I RST I MPRESSIONS First impressions are important, so Taber paid close attention to the private elevator foyer at the entrance to the home. He began by redesigning the ceiling with a coffer that added six inches of height. On the floor is a white onyx inlay outlined in brushed nickel and accented with brushed nickel cabochons in a harlequin pattern. The double doors have semi-opaque etched glass panes with an aqua cast, silver leaf accents and brushed nickel hardware.

A dark walnut console table with silver leaf detail and a white lacquer interior visible behind glass doors provides display space for elegant accessories like a nickel bowl filled with stainless steel spheres and faceted crystal spires. Above the table hangs a painting by Russianborn French artist Romain de Tirtoff, known as Erté, one of 30 in the owners’ collection. Flanking it are hand-blown blue crystal light fixtures with a silverflecked bubble pattern mounted on silver leaf panels. “We wanted to highlight the beautiful piece of art and create a glamorous, metropolitan feel when you come off the elevator,” Taber says.

Beyond the double doors is the interior foyer, where Taber painted the wall with beige and taupe horizontal stripes. A neoclassical curved table with a mirrored back is finished with silver leaf and polished nickel. A square crystal chandelier with a silver leaf detail illuminates the space.

L I VI NG AND DINING ROOMS The combined living and dining rooms offer breathtaking views of both the ocean and the city skyline. Since it was impossible to raise the living room ceiling, Taber created architectural interest instead by suspending five independent floating panels of drywall. Lighting between and around the perimeter of the panels, and recessed lighting in the center, create drama. The pattern of a large wool and silk area rug in sandy and aqua tones mimics the action of a wave retreating from the shore. Window treatments are vanilla side panels highlighted by recessed lighting; blackout shades and traverse sheers are hidden in pockets above.

Twin sofas with dark walnut bases are upholstered in tone-on-tone vanilla chenille, while the dark walnut tables behind them have gracefully tapered legs and a reflective lacquered finish. Low, streamlined lamps on the ocean side have open bases so they don’t obstruct the view. A modern geometric Greek key pattern adds interest to cut vanilla velvet on matched chairs, and a small, polished nickel-and-glass table between them offers a place to set a glass of wine. In the center of the seating group is a glass double-shelf coffee table framed in silver leaf.

Creamy woven fabric covers the backs of the walnut-framed chairs; the fronts are upholstered in chenille. Above the dining table, a chandelier with five square, silver-leaf-and-crystal fixtures suspended in a linear formation is a visual focal point.

T H E KITCHEN To create a more open feel, Taber removed a wall between the great room and the kitchen, replacing it with a waterfall edge counter crowned with quartzite in tones of deep taupe, silver and bone. “It opened up the views from the kitchen,” Taber says.

Above the island, a floating drywall panel that mirrors the island’s shape has both perimeter and recessed lighting.

Dark walnut cabinets with brushed nickel hardware in square and rectangular shapes and a glass-fronted china closet lend a sophisticated, urban feel. Appliances are also clad in dark walnut, while a backsplash fashioned from large glass panels custom colored to match the island’s bone base brightens the space.

ME DI A R OOM Just off the living room is a media room, where a custom millwork wall unit finished in white lacquer and polished nickel houses a large TV screen. A plush sectional covered in woven chenille with a tufted back offers comfortable seating, while silk accent pillows with a geometric pattern add visual interest.

A leather-topped ottoman with a walnut lower shelf and polished nickel frame can serve as a coffee table. Hanging above is a silver leaf chandelier with crystal accents. A wool-and-silk transitional trellis design area rug adds softness, and a celadon green pottery lamp topped with a white silk shantung shade adds to the cozy feel.

Silver and taupe Euro shams on the bed have contrasting cream flanges, and a pair of king shams have an organic pattern in blue, taupe and silver. There’s also a full-length taupeand-silver neckroll pillow. Comfortable chairs with clean, modern lines are upholstered in a woven fabric, and a table between them has a polished nickel frame and an afrormosia inset top.

In the luxurious master bath, silvery vinyl with a striated pattern covers the top half of the walls; beneath it is glass-and-stone mosaic wainscoting topped with a white glass tile chair rail. Two ceiling coffers add architectural interest. Countertops are slab marble, and a large soaking tub has a dramatic silver and gray marble surround and a matching bench in front of it. A large shower defined by frameless glass panels connects his and her sides of the bathroom. Custom vanities and storage towers with opaque glass fronts are dark walnut, and the same dark walnut frames two large mirrors.

Walls are a relaxing beige, and a textured shag rug in a toasty sand color adds softness. The headboard on the walnut-framed bed is upholstered in creamy velvet with oval-shaped walnut overlays. A drum-shaped chandelier has a light diffuser to create a soft glow.

A modern take on a classic wing chair has graceful curves framed in walnut to play off the ovals on the headboard, alongside textured taupe and sand upholstery. A walnut dresser with brushed nickel pulls also has smooth curves, and oval shapes appear again in the silver leaf base of a floor lamp crowned with a white drum shade.

f you’ll allow it for a moment, let’s make some assumptions about you. Let’s suppose you’re committed to never texting and driving like any decent person should be. You go hands-free to make calls while in the car. Texts go unreturned until you’re safely stopped. And driving while surfing the web, like we’ve all seen so many drivers do? Never.

But, being honest here, there are times.

We’ve all done it. The navigation running on your phone gets wonky, and you just need to take a quick look. Your phone won’t stop buzzing and you pick it up just to check who’s incessantly calling. A text comes over from Mom reading “URGENT.” It’ll just take a second. Just one second.

And in that moment, let’s suppose you drive straight into a cyclist. You know, one of those spandex-clad weekend warriors taking up a whole lane in the middle of godforsaken rush-hour traffic.

And she dies. You kill that cyclist for the sake of a text.

It’s a terrible scenario—for everyone involved, really. But you will likely face no other consequence than a guilty conscience. Because in Florida, it’s generally not considered a crime to kill a cyclist with your car, and if it is, you’ll likely walk anyway. It has happened right here in Broward County more times than anybody has counted.

Here’s why.

wrong, and under Florida law, experts say, that seems to have been the correct conclusion. In Florida, typically a driver who kills a cyclist in a crash has not committed a crime.

It’s a fact that frustrates the many lawyers in Florida who specialize in bicycle crashes. Among them is George Palaidis, a Fort Lauderdale attorney and avid cyclist.

“The short answer is that there really isn’t a law out there to give the officer the ability to charge a motorist for killing a cyclist if it was a mistake,” Palaidis says.

It’s one thing if the driver was drunk or leaves the scene of the crash—those things are codified in Florida law as crimes. But accidentally killing a cyclist simply isn’t a criminal infraction.

The Florida laws that police might use to charge a motorist who kills a cyclist offer little help. Florida’s vehicular homicide law requires proof that the driver had a “reckless disregard” for the safety of others. Manslaughter is essentially killing someone without legal justification, but convicting a driver of killing a cyclist would require prosecutors proving the driver had culpable negligence, meaning a reckless disregard for human life, Palaidis says. As an example, clean-

ing a loaded gun in the direction of someone that then goes off and kills the person is culpable negligence, because it’s a “gross and flagrant” disregard for human life. But even if the driver was texting away with both thumbs as they killed a cyclist, prosecutors would need eye witnesses Fort Lauderdale attorney and cell phone records and maybe a George Palaidis confession to prove a disregard for the safety of others or culpable negligence. Instead, police almost always defer to the motorist’s excuses.

This happens even as the popularity of cycling in South Florida grows exponentially. In Fort Lauderdale alone, there are organized group rides every day of the week, from Monday-night rides between breweries to Sunday morning zips up A1A. The largest of them is the monthly Critical Mass, in which dozens, sometimes hundreds, of cyclists take up entire lanes of traffic to make a point that drivers ought to share the road. The Critical Mass riders will often point out

the Florida law gives bikes the same rights to a lane of traffic as any other vehicle.

With the number of bike riders increasing, so have collisions with cars. Year after year, Florida leads the country in bicycle deaths with 125 per year by last count. That’s nearly six cycling fatalities per every million residents—twice the national average.

It’s typically Miami-Dade or Broward that leads the state in bike fatalities. Taking population into account, that makes Broward the most-deadly county in the state for bike deaths. In Fort Lauderdale alone, four cyclists died in crashes last year, and figuring in population, that puts our city in the top 10 for the most cycling deaths per capita in the nation. In those four cycling deaths, not one of the drivers faced criminal charges.

Can this change? Some people are working on just that.

The only solution Prieto and other Broward cyclists found was one that would offer them retribution, but no real protection.

“We have asked everyone to arm themselves with cameras on the front and back of the bike,” Prieto says. It might not keep them safe, but if they’re killed, Prieto says, at least there will be evidence of how it happened.

“People are fearful of riding on the road in Broward County anymore,” Prieto says. “It isn’t right that cyclists have to fear for their lives.”

This could change if cycling advocates have their way. This year, the Florida Senate considered a new statute called the Vulnerable Road User Act. Killing a cyclist would revoke the driver’s license and require the driver to pay a fine, serve time on house arrest and attend a driver improvement course.

In the Florida House, lawmakers considered a different version that would have made killing a cyclist a second-degree misdemeanor. The penalty would’ve been a year in jail maximum, although more likely a month or two behind bars. While that doesn’t seem like a lot, supporters say perhaps adding a penalty for killing a cyclist would make drivers more careful.

fter the death of the two cyclists after Thanksgiving in 2018, cyclists gathered for a memorial and met to talk about what they could do to make sure it would never happen again. They quickly figured out that, under the current law, there isn’t much they can do.

Arnie Prieto is one of the organizers of that Sunday morning ride, put together by a group called Cycling Family Broward. Prieto, who luckily wasn’t there that morning, says part of the issue is the way police often write crash reports, assigning no blame to the driver. “They don’t give the chance to the cyclist,” Prieto says.

some protections to cyclists, pedestrians and motorcyclists struck by motorists, assigning minimum fines and sometimes jail time if the driver is at fault. It’s rare for such a thing to happen. A study by the League of American Bicyclists found that just 12 percent of drivers responsible for cycling deaths are punished.

While the Florida bill didn’t make it out of subcommittee, the fact that it was considered has encouraged cycling advocates that perhaps change is possible. It wouldn’t be the first time a law would get passed because of tragedy. Florida’s ban on texting and driving, for instance, became law in part because of the advocacy of former state Rep. Irving Slosberg of Boca Raton, whose daughter was killed in a traffic crash. That example encourages cycling advocates that laws can change based on stories of tragedies, Palaidis says.

But not everyone, even some cyclists, believes accidentally killing a cyclist should be considered a crime. Among them is Robert Pinkiert, an avid cyclist and attorney who lives in Davie and has regularly handled personal injury cases involving a car striking a bike. “I just don’t think it should be a crime if someone accidentally hits a cyclist,” Pinkiert says.

He says it’s important to consider the driver of a car that plowed into a crowd of people protesting in 2017 in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Undoubtedly that was a deliberate act, a criminal one. But it’s wrong, he says, to consider the accidental killing of a cyclist in the same way.

Instead, Pinkiert says families of cyclists who are killed can seek retribution in civil courts.

There, courts assign percentages of blame. For instance, if a cyclist is riding three abreast with other bikes and gets hit by a car, it’s likely the cyclist shares some blame. But a driver who pulls out in front of a cyclist—a common collision— might be considered the driver’s fault alone. It’s not a criminal charge, but Pinkiert says a civil judgment can at least be a way to find closure.

Meanwhile, others continue to work to change the laws to protect cyclists from being struck. Until that happens, though, it’s unlikely a motorist will be charged the next time a cyclist is killed. But that won’t stop the cycling advocates from trying.

“Look,” Palaidis says. “I’m doing this for other cyclists, but I’m also doing this for myself.

I want to get home and see my wife at the end of a bike ride and not have her get a call saying I’m not coming back.”

The backsplash, a wavy Island Stone glass in a pale soft green, mirrors the water’s movement—and combined with the white shiplap detailing on the ceiling—the space has a sophisticated, nautical feel. Widmer balances that with modern, industrial white and aluminum hanging lights and leather and chrome stools. The chrome and leather décor continues into the circular breakfast alcove around a circular glass table overlooking panoramic views of the water. A crystal Libby Langdon chandelier and a contemporary inverted ceiling with rope lighting finish the space.

DI NI NG ROOM This oversized room is the kitchen’s counterpart when it comes to hosting a festive feast. A glass Bernhardt table that seats eight takes center stage while a massive custom mirror, nearly 11 feet wide, ensures that every velvet seat in the space has a

view of the water. The mirror’s faux-finish frame matches the bird’s-eye maple Caracole chairs.

Chrome and crystal sconce lights and a chandelier illuminate the room and artwork. When designing, Widmer always looks to support local businesses and artists, so when she saw Dalia Kantor’s work, she knew it would be perfect for the dining room.

CLU B ROOM & OFFI CE Perfect for watching game day on two flat-screen TVs or entertaining guests for a lively happy hour, the intimate club room is an on-trend addition to the home—complete with a stylish wet bar and seaside views. The porcelain tile that adorns the wall reminded Widmer of the pattern water makes on the sand as it washes ashore. Handblown glass light fixtures hang above the wire-brushed white oak floors and cream American Leather sofa. One of Widmer’s signature design features, staining the window returns on each of the five square windows along the wall, is combined with the tongue-and-groove ceiling and curvilinear inverted ceiling above the bar, giving the space a little extra contrast and intrigue.

The office’s full bathroom features Tommy Bahama mosaic tile throughout and a wall-to-wall mirror to add extra dimension to the space.

UP STAI RS FOYER & FAM ILY ROOM Arriving on the second floor, a spacious loft with oak floors, a quaint desk and a gorgeous Van Teal light fixture in chrome and gold sits adjacent to the family room, morning bar and second laundry room (the first one is located downstairs between the three-car garage and kitchen).

The Bernhardt entertainment unit in a brush oak finish sits in front of the vintage Lucite coffee table. “Vintage items give a warm and friendly feeling to the house,” Widmer says. Her goal was to intermix hard surfaces with warm, welcoming fabrics, like the circular velvet chairs and velvet dark teal couch with Lucite legs. To elevate the space, Widmer brought another design element into the home—the use of end tables that don’t necessarily match, but simply have elements in common.

The king bed’s silver metallic leather tufted headboard complements the Caracole bird’s eye maple nightstands with mother-ofpearl metallic handles. O

ne of the petty rewards of a journalism career is that you usually get a free obituary. Those don’t come easily these days with newspapers scraping for every penny they can make. But newspaper and magazine writers—even undistinguished ones—usually have friends who take the trouble to note their passing, often exaggerating their contributions to the profession. We recall reading about a fellow we worked with at a small paper in Pennsylvania more than 50 years ago, who died while working for an even smaller paper. It took a few weeks, but eventually, a flattering obit appeared in one of the major Philadelphia papers.

Thus, it is that we belatedly announce with sadness that the author of our recent article on a young girl spending summers at Mar-a-Lago, as a family member when Marjorie Merriweather Post owned it, may never have seen her story in print. It ran in the September issue of our Palm Beach County magazines. We did not know at the time that Jennifer Rahel Conover, whose story was autobiographical, had died of a heart attack just as the magazine came out.

She was 76.

Strangely, we did not learn of her death until the beginning of October, and only then because a relative canceled the subscription in her name. There had been considerable communication between Jennifer and our editors in preparing the story. She submitted it late last year, but there were some delays in getting the piec-

es together. She needed to find old pictures. When they were lost in the email system, she had to find them again and resend. But it finally ran, with an attractive presentation. The subject matter, including knowing President Trump, went beyond her childhood memories to tell the story of that great estate’s seriously over budget architectural design. The piece will likely be submitted in one of the regional magazine contests, in one of the historical categories. iven all the work that went into it, it seemed odd that we did not hear from her after it appeared. Writers usually want additional copies of their work. We were out of town for a while, but nobody contacted us, and apparently, there was nothing in the paper in Fort Lauderdale, where she lived. We knew her for at least 30 years, and she contributed to our magazines every so often, but everyone we can think of who knew her and might have called was already gone. It’s one of the problems that comes with age, although today 76 is not that old.

Her death did not go totally unnoticed, however. There was a detailed obit in the Washington Post,

but we found that only after checking the internet to confirm her death.

The reason it ran in Washington was Jennifer’s unusual political family history. Her father, with whom she was not close (he liked women he wasn’t married to) was a general on the staff of Gen. John Pershing in World War I, and later served under Gen. Douglas MacArthur.

The connection to Mar-a-Lago was through her grandfather, Joseph E. Davies, of whom she was very fond.

He has been described as Marjorie Merriweather Post’s “favorite husband” of the four creditworthy men in that contest. He was an important man—ambassador to Russia during World War II and close to President Franklin Roosevelt. But she also had an uncle, Sen. Millard Tydings, and a cousin, Sen. Joseph D. Tydings, both from Maryland.

Locally, she was active in the yachting community and considered an able sailor. Writing was not her first calling. As a young woman she was a model, and later worked for the Fort Lauderdale interior design firm Rablen Shelton. The Post reported that she decorated the Nixon San Clemente and D.C. residences.

Her first two marriages ended in divorce, but she was married to Ted Conover for the last 36 years. They traveled widely, and she published travel pieces in newspapers and magazines. She also wrote a book, “Toasts for Every Occasion.” All in all, it was quite a life and deserving of at least a modest send-off. And Jennifer, please accept our apologies for the delay.
