FOUNDATION is proud to continue a partnership with Vero Beach Magazine to publish the 2021 “Guide to Better Giving.” Since publication of last year’s edition, our community has overcome several significant challenges, beginning with a busy hurricane season in 2019 and continuing with the ongoing effects of a global pandemic that will likely last until 2021. Much of the good work done to respond to these challenges has come from the nonprofit charitable organizations listed in the following pages.
In normal years, Indian River County’s charities do the work that makes our community a good place to live, work and visit. Over the past year, however, this sector of the local economy has gone above and beyond. Each organization’s unique mission is an integral part of what makes living in Indian River County better. I encourage you to be part of something better by giving some thought to how you might practice better giving in the year to come.
Better giving happens

Learn about the volunteer leaders who make up the governing board of your favorite charities. Meet with management to understand what is being done to achieve results. Read financial information to know exactly what your donation is paying for.
Better giving happens when you align your donations with the findings of a recently completed Community Needs Assessment. Progress is being made, but more work needs to be done.
In our community, there are individual charities and collaborations working to improve the lives of children, generate economic opportunities for vulnerable individuals, provide health care or affordable housing to families, or care for seniors. Some operate proven programs that merit long-term support, and others need venture philanthropy to generate ideas that lead
to innovations that receive national recognition.

This year, our community lost several noted philanthropists, including the namesake of the Community Foundation’s legacy society, Alma Lee Loy. LAST YEAR AT THIS time there was no COVID-19, no need for a lockdown, masks or social distancing. When the global pandemic hit early this spring, it hit hard, affecting everyone and everything, including charitable organizations. Having to cancel their annual fundraising events left many without the financial resources needed to provide programs and services as the light begins to appear at the end of a very dark sixmonth tunnel.

And just for downright fun, visit McKee Botanical Garden’s recently completed Children’s Garden, a magical fairy forest where imagination and adventure go hand in hand. Skip along a trail lined by giant blue mushrooms, be charmed watching a play in the Nautilus Shell Amphitheatre and explore the Scorpion Shipwreck.
You will also meet two couples whose giving stems from personal experience and relationships. Dick and Sally Brickman’s lifelong love of nature and commitment to protecting the environment
led them to the Indian River Land Trust, where their quiet acts of generosity have helped preserve acres of riverfront property.
Ever since Adam and Sarah Logemann were introduced to Camp Haven and met the homeless men there, they have supported the nonprofit organization that works to rebuild lives. As Adam says, “Better one person’s life or a group of people, and you’re going to feel better yourself.”
Those are not just empty words, but ones that come straight from the heart. There has never been a better time to support the work our local charities do. Be your best generous self. It matters now more than ever.

WHAT DO THE BOYS & Girls Clubs, Camp Haven, the Gifford Youth Achievement Center, the Laura (Riding) Jackson Foundation, Vero Beach Rowing, United Against Poverty and McKee Botanical Garden have in common?
They all held capital campaigns that raised the funds needed to expand facilities, provide additional programming and enhance support services. One even created an enchanted garden that is home to fairies, pirates and a monkey bridge that only the bravest little ones dare cross.
By definition, a capital campaign is a targeted fundraising effort that takes place during a defined period of time. In order to be successful, a campaign needs a plan, strong leadership, effective communications and donors who support the
cause. The seven local nonprofits had it all; here are some of their stories.
A good place to start is with a visit to United Against Poverty (UP). In January, the nonprofit that serves families who live at or below 200% of the federal poverty level opened the doors to its sparkling new 46,000square-foot UP Center on 27th Street in Vero Beach. What had been a vacant citrus packinghouse has been transformed into a community hub where multiple social service partners, including the Department of Children and Families Access Florida and St. Helen Outreach, have satellite locations. Treasure Coast Community Health even operates a clinic on-site, offering basic medical care, including mental health counseling services.
The center is also home to UP’s Member Share Grocery Program, educational and training programs, crisis stabilization services and a small business development program. But that’s not all. There’s a pervasive sense of optimism and hope, as everywhere you look you see colorful art and encouraging words.
Since the nonprofit was founded 17 years ago, its purpose has been to inspire and empower people living in poverty to lift themselves and their families to economic self-sufficiency. The goal of serving over 1,000 families a day has not been fully realized since mid-March, when COVID-19 protocols were put in place; however, the 650 families that have benefited daily from the center’s umbrella of services couldn’t be more grateful.
UP Development Director Franklin “Trip” Snelson, who oversaw fundraising efforts, is quick to credit the many volunteers who served on committees and reached out to friends and colleagues in the community to garner support. The campaign raised a total of $5.9 million: $2 million for the purchase of the warehouse and the remainder for the transformation of the interior.
“Campaign volunteers dedicated their time, talent and treasures,” says Snelson. “It was through their relationships that we assembled the funding that helped make the new UP Center a reality and broaden
our base of financial support in the community.”
Executive Director Annabel Robertson agrees enthusiastically.
“I’m so proud of our volunteers and supporters. They shared our vision to create a community center where services and partners come together under one roof. By combining our resources and strengths, we are better able to provide a continuum of services beyond the scope of each single agency.
“With the opening of our new center, we have made a commitment to help more of those members of our community that need a hand up in a big way. I’m amazed at what was accomplished, and I’m so grateful to the people of Indian River County for making it possible.”
The people of Indian River County
also helped build the Gifford Youth Achievement Center’s new 14,000square-foot Educational Center. Named for GYAC Foundation board of trustees Vice Chair Bill Glavin and his late wife, Cis, the addition designed by Edlund Dritenbas Binkley Architects and Associates and built by Proctor Construction has eight multipurpose learning rooms, including a specially equipped computer lab and a room geared toward teenagers — all very much needed.
As Executive Director Angelia Perry explains, “Over the past several years, more and more families had come asking for our help and we didn’t have the room, so we ended up with a long waiting list. Despite adding a number of modular classrooms to the campus, we were forced to turn away more than 60 children each year. That’s when the board decided we needed to launch a capital campaign with the goal of raising $7.4 million; $3 million was for construction, $4 million for GYAC’s endowment fund and the remainder for increased operating expenses.
“Prior to embarking on the campaign, we consulted with the Carter group to see if having one was even possible. After looking at everything we showed them, they came back saying it was definitely something we could achieve. Lenora Ritchie and Steve Higgins were the ones at Carter we worked with, and we couldn’t have done it without them,” says Perry.
“Our board members were very motivated and involved in the campaign, reaching out to their friends, bringing them here for tours and explaining why GYAC even exists.”
Since the nonprofit opened 22 years ago, its sole purpose has been to enhance the academic achievement
of Indian River County children by providing the necessary support to ensure that they graduate from high school and have the opportunity and ability to attend college or a vocational program.
To turn away even one child because there wasn’t enough classroom space had become unacceptable. That message was shared throughout the community and hit home.
“The campaign was an absolute success, first and foremost for the children who attend our educational
after-school program and summer camps. The new facility makes it possible to accommodate those 60-some students who were wait-listed plus an additional 75 students.”
Perry smiles every time she talks about the impact the new facility has had on eager-to-learn students.
“GYAC’s academic programs are a game changer for many. We instill in our students that they are capable of success — no exceptions!”
Now it’s time to talk about fairies, pirates and the monkey bridge. McKee Botanical Garden, a tropical treasure in our backyard, opened its long-anticipated Children’s Garden early this year. “Imaginative,” “whimsical” and “delightful” barely tip the iceberg of adjectives used to describe what has become a magnet for children of all ages.
It’s been said there’s a child in all of us, and the Children’s Garden proves the adage to be true. Many a father has been seen sitting on a giant blue mushroom reading to a pigtailed toddler on his lap, while her mother and an older sibling skip off to explore the pirate ship.
Exploring is the operative word in a garden where children discover the powerful bond they have with nature through interaction and education. Besides, the Children’s Garden, with its Water Lily Fountain, Music Maze and Nautilus Shell Amphitheater, is just plain fun.
And it’s all thanks to funds raised during a $7.5 million capital campaign, with $5 million needed to design and develop the Children’s Garden and $2.5 million earmarked for McKee’s endowment fund.
“It was so amazing to see the garden take shape,” says Executive Director Christine Hobart. “This

was our first capital campaign since the restoration of the garden itself 20 years ago, and we were so excited about the response. We have a great board that assisted in fundraising efforts; so did our members and their
circle of friends. The community as a whole really embraced us.
“Actually, the Children’s Garden didn’t start out like what we have now,” Hobart says. “There’s a lot of thought and planning that goes into
what you see here. Our thinking about creating an area for children evolved as we saw how technology had become more inherent in their lives. We knew how important it is for children to spend time outside, and we were fortunate to have found the right designer in Emmanuel Didier, who designed the Childhood’s Gate Children’s Garden at the Arboretum at Penn State.”
Didier drew on his own experiences while growing up, as well as his children’s ideas of what makes a kids’ area fun. For McKee’s Children’s Garden, he created a fairy forest where little ones can experience magical moments they will long remember.
As a smiling Hobart says, “There’s nothing like McKee, and when you add a children’s garden on top of that, it makes everything so much better!” ◆

WHEN SUSAN CHENAULT HEARS THE name Alma Lee Loy, she thinks back to the times she and the woman affectionately called the “First Lady of Vero Beach” would run into each other. No matter the reason or topic of conversation, Chenault remembers Loy’s optimism, wisdom and love for the community where she was born and raised, worked and chaired various committees and councils.
“I’ve known Alma Lee since I was a kid. I used to shop in her store, and it amazed me how later on she always remembered my name. She remembered everyone’s name and I could never figure out how she did that,” says Chenault, who is the senior vice president and trust advisor at Northern Trust Corporation.
“Alma Lee had her charitable trust here with Northern Trust, and at her death the Indian River Community Foundation became the beneficiary of her generosity. She wanted to make sure her giving kept on going, and she had worked with Jeff (Pickering, IRCF president and CEO) who knew where her heart lay.”
Others she inspired knew as well.
Several years ago, the Community Foundation established the Alma Lee Loy Legacy Society to honor donors who entrust a portion of their philanthropic legacy plans to be administered by IRCF. Since then, the number of donors has increased significantly.
“Philanthropy is huge here in Vero Beach. We have so many clients like Alma Lee who are such good people and have a heart for giving,” says Chenault, who credits her father, Ted, with teaching her the importance of giving back.
“He always told my sister and me that the world is a wonderful place, and it’s made better when you get to participate in it and help other people.”
Chenault has taken her father’s advice to heart. She has twice co-chaired the United Way of Indian River County’s annual campaign and continues to contribute her expertise and energies to various nonprofit organizations that address a multitude of community needs. She currently chairs the board of directors of the Scholarship Foundation of Indian River County.
When Chenault meets with philanthropically minded individuals, she emphasizes the importance of supporting agencies during one’s lifetime and beyond, also citing certain tax advantages.
“When I talk to people about creating a charitable legacy, my first question is usually, ‘Is Uncle Sam your favorite charity?’ I find that’s sort of a good way to start a conversation,” she says.
“We have clients who know which charities they want to support. For those who don’t, I ask, ‘What’s your area of interest? Is it education, hunger, seniors?’ There’s no shortage of great places to donate, and the United Way, with its many partner agencies, is a good place to start.”
So how does one go about creating a charitable legacy that will continue to benefit future generations? That’s where the Community Foundation can help by providing the names of professional advisors like Chenault who can facilitate the process.
Will Schlitt, CPA and managing partner at Offutt Barton Schlitt LLC, is one. He knows what it means to “pay it forward.” He’s been doing it since he was a young boy, growing up in a family well known for passing the blessings

they have received on to others. Helping those in need is part of the Schlitt DNA.
“If an individual is charitably inclined and wants to give something back, there are many different ways to do that. Establishing a charitable legacy is the most tax-efficient manner,” says Schlitt, who as a teenager worked for his father, Richard, painting houses during the summer.
He was 16 when the bookkeeper for his father’s company passed away. Without hesitating, he raised his hand and said he wanted the job. “Working inside in air conditioning was a lot better than painting outside in all the heat,” says Schlitt, who found he not only liked working with numbers and balance sheets, he was good at it.
By the time he walked onto the University of Florida campus, Schlitt knew he wanted to be a certified public accountant. Four years later he earned a B.A. in accounting; three years after that he had a master’s degree in taxation.
Since returning to his hometown and establishing his practice, Schlitt has been involved with a number of local nonprofit organizations, including the Boys & Girls Club, Habitat for Humanity, United Way and the Indian River Community Foundation, where he is a member of the board of directors.
Schlitt feels fortunate to be in a position where he can advise clients who wish to make a positive and lasting
difference in the lives of others. “A lot of time people have great intentions, but they really don’t know how to implement them. Being able to help them achieve their objectives is one of the most enjoyable parts of my job.”
William Stewart represents nonprofit organizations at Rossway Swan and advises clients in the firm’s charitable giving practice. His long involvement with local nonprofits has included the VNA, Harbor Branch, the Environmental Learning Center and others. One of the benefits of giving locally, he explains, is that it’s possible to see exactly what your money is doing in the community. “You can also get involved,” he adds. “You can put on a pair of shorts and go help.”
He explains that there are as many ways to create a charitable legacy as there are reasons for doing it. “It all boils down, though, to being motivated to help other people,” he says. He stresses that smaller gifts are as important as larger ones. “You don’t have to give a lot to make a dent in a problem and feel satisfaction.”
Stewart finds the work highly rewarding. He describes how he has seen family foundations provide wonderful moments that bring grandparents, parents and grandchildren together to make plans for the coming year. “It’s a nice way to get three generations together in a room, talking about how they can make things better.”
Anthony Guettler, an attorney with Gould Cooksey Fennell, feels the same way. Well versed in the legal aspects involved with establishing a charitable legacy, when he meets with a new client Guettler typically begins the conversation by asking a few get-to-know-you questions. Then he listens.
“Understanding a client’s goals and motivations is so important. I ask clients to tell me, in their own words, what they want done and why. I also ask them to identify others they feel should be involved in their planning; a team approach can be very beneficial,” says Guettler.
“I encourage clients to come up with a plan, to be thoughtful and do their homework, while being open to new ideas and different perspectives. As tax lawyers, we’re trained to help clients save taxes and meet their goals.”
When Guettler is asked to give an example of how a charitable legacy can benefit others, he tells the story of a client who had a strong desire to protect Florida’s ecology and wildlife and educate children in a unique outdoor classroom setting.

generosity has educated thousands of school-aged children through field trips, summer camps and other naturerelated events and activities.
That type of generosity resonates with Guettler, who has a deep appreciation for the environment and the role models who helped shape his future. “When I was growing up I was just a kid doing kid things. My family went to church and I always had people around me who set good examples. I hope I can do the same for my children.”
Even at a young age, Guettler knew he wanted to do something that related to finance, so when he went to the University of Florida he enrolled in economics and business courses. He also signed up for a law class, and what he learned piqued his interest, prompting him to earn degrees in finance, law and taxation.
That was 15 years ago, and since then Guettler, who serves on the United Way’s board of directors, has worked with and advised numerous individuals and family members on how to establish a charitable legacy.
“People who make their charitable legacy a focus of their planning inspire others,” says Guettler. “Being part of a plan to establish a charitable legacy for a client is extremely rewarding, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to help people make a positive and lasting difference in the lives of others.” ◆
AT LAST COUNT, THERE ARE more than 600 charitable organizations in Indian River County. While their missions may vary, they all strive to fill a humanitarian or environmental need. Most importantly, they all depend on financial support and helping hands to accomplish their goals.
Fortunately, our community is blessed with a large number of caring individuals whose generous nature often stems from a family tradition coupled with the desire to support a cause they care deeply about. They are an inspiration to those around them, encouraging others to give however and whatever they can.
When you ask Dick Brickman why he is so passionate about supporting the Indian River Land Trust and
its efforts to preserve the county’s natural resources and special places, his response hearkens back to his formative years as a graduate landscape architect working with his father as they grew and expanded the family landscaping business.
It is a passion Brickman shares with his wife, Sally. Over the years, their deep appreciation for nurturing and preserving the land has led to an active commitment to environmental stewardship.
It was a friend who introduced the Brickmans to McKee Botanical Garden (then known as McKee Jungle Gardens) and the Indian River Land Trust, a nonprofit organization that had been formed in 1990 to save the treasured historical site from being developed. Thanks to an outpouring of community support, early restoration work had just begun.
“The energy and spirit that was being built for the Land Trust was magnetic, and over the years has led to the purchase and preservation of over 1,200 acres of environmentally sensitive land, water resources and coastline areas, providing access for public recreation and educational opportunities,” Brickman points out.
The latest and perhaps most significant was the Land Trust’s purchase of 65 coastline acres north of the Merrill P. Barber Bridge last December. A third of the land is estuarine wetland, with mangroves and a saltwater pond — a natural wildlife habitat.
“That was a real miracle,” Brickman exclaims. “The Trust had been trying to buy what had been known
as the Hoffman property for years, in order to keep it from being developed.
“Besides that, the Trust is also working on the 220-acre Coastal Oaks Preserve, where we’re partnering with various nonprofits to create a place for research and education. We’ve also got a project called the Oyster Bar Trail, which is being constructed right now in partnership with the county. It’s scheduled for completion next year,” Brickman adds. “The Land Trust has a lot going on.”

leadership for making good things happen. “The Brickmans have been the backbone of this organization for years. Dick’s expertise and wisdom along with Sally’s strong support have been invaluable.”
Hearing that, Brickman is quick to credit others. “There’s a group of people that has a real passion about preservation, and Sally and I are thrilled to be involved with what’s happening at the Land Trust. We believe the Lord gave us these resources, and we try to use them in the best way we can.
“It’s not about us. It’s about the land,” he adds.
When Adam and Sarah Logemann arrived in Vero Beach, they had no idea where Camp Haven was, let alone what went on there. They were about to find out.
“Sarah’s parents, Gordon and Linda Stewart, have lived in Vero Beach for years. One day her father, whom I’m close to, asked me to take a drive with him over to Camp Haven, a nonprofit
they supported, so I said sure,” says Adam Logemann, whose introduction to the transitional home for homeless men in Indian River County was an eye-opener.
“I knew homelessness was a problem, but I had no idea how much. I learned that Camp Haven is doing something about it by providing temporary housing as well as psychological and personal counseling to help homeless men rebuild their lives. The success rate is high.
“The most touching thing for me was when we took a tour,” Logemann continues. “Several of the men were outside and we talked with them. They told us about employment opportunities and reconnecting with their families. They took us into their rooms, where everything was clean and neat. They were so proud of what they had. I can relate to the men who live there. They took one wrong turn that derailed them. It can happen to anybody.”
The Logemanns also learned that

Camp Haven receives no federal assistance, instead depending solely on private funding. That’s why Executive Director Chuck Bradley counts on people like the Logemanns and the Stewarts.
“They’re very generous people. Through giving of their treasure, time and talent, they’ve enabled us to continue providing program needs for men, teaching them personal financial information, establishing a savings account and taking responsibility for debt, which includes paying child support,” says Bradley.
“The Stewarts and Logemanns were instrumental in getting funding for our new building, which is where we will have our meetings, program-related activities, computer labs and dining.
“We also received a $100,000 grant from Impact 100 and $50,000 each from the Community Foundation and John’s Island Foundation. The new building is going to make a big difference.”
The Logemanns, who met while attending Syracuse University, are happy they’ve been able to play a part in making that difference happen. As Adam tells it, it took an act of nature to bring them together.
“There was a tornado that ripped through Syracuse and forced all of the students down into the shelter, where I looked over and standing next to me was this cute little redhead,” he says in a happy voice.
“We’ve been married for 17 years and blessed with the ability to have a home and three children. Now
more than ever we’re looking to pass those blessings along. It’s a family tradition. Sarah grew up in a family of generous givers who believe after you have enough, give it to someone who needs it.
“I tell people to take the time to go and investigate any nonprofit you may want to get involved with. Better one person’s life or a group of people and you’re going to feel better yourself — that’s what Camp Haven does for us. Every time we leave there we feel better knowing we had a hand in making it a better place.” ◆

H.A.L.O.Fish was just 12 weeks old when he was taken off the streets and brought to Dr. Dan’s Animal Hospital as part of the TNVR (Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate and Return) program, which strives to control the population of feral cats. The staff at Dr. Dan’s fell in love with Fish and hoped to find him a forever home.
However, the staff discovered that Fish suffered from a severe heart murmur, so they made him an appointment with the cardiologist, who diagnosed him with a congenital heart defect. Fish would need a risky surgery to prevent heart failure.
Dr. Dan’s Animal Hospital’s nonprofit, Indian River Animal Advocates, marshaled some generous patrons, its staff worked closely with a specialist, and Fish underwent his lifesaving surgery on Dec. 9, 2019.
Throughout his adventure, Fish was fostered by a family that ended up deciding to keep him. Such a circumstance is warmly referred to as a “foster failure,” but neither 1-year-old Fish nor his new family would have it any other way!

Pat Draper is a busy health care professional who manages the Heart Failure Management Clinic at Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital; nevertheless, she has found time to branch out into poetry. It began in 2015 when she participated in a writing workshop offered by the Laura (Riding) Jackson Foundation. The following April, she attended LRJF’s annual Poetry and BBQ event, where she found motivation in the words of the featured poets.
Pat joined the Porch Poets, a group that meets on the front porch of the historic Laura (Riding) Jackson home to help one another as they craft their writing. The Porch Poets quickly became in important part of Pat’s life, and encouragement from the group led her to submit a collection of her poems to an online contest. She won a publishing package from Rebel Magic Books, and her poetry book “The Tao of Hibiscus” was published in December 2019.
“The Laura (Riding) Jackson Foundation has been central to my writing experience by offering programs and supporting the Porch Poets,” Pat says. “I believe that LRJF is a reflection of the cultural heritage available in our community. It’s here for us all, students and adults alike.”

Alicia has been a fixture at the Gifford Youth Achievement Center for about as far back as she can remember. At age 5, she began studying violin with the Gifford Youth Orchestra and eventually added the cello. Now a freshman at Indian River State College, she still plays both instruments.
Throughout her teen years, Alicia remained faithful in attending GYAC’s programs, no matter how busy she was with school, work and extracurricular activities. “I was brought up here, so I feel like I’m missing out if I don’t come,” she says. “They have helped me so much over the years.”

Little Birthday Angels has celebrated hundreds of 1st through 18th birthdays for homeless children on the Treasure Coast, bringing a bit of joy during difficult times. Helping each child to feel loved and honored on his or her special day is always a meaningful experience, but some stories are particularly memorable.
Recently, Little Birthday Angels learned that Samantha was turning 16. For privacy reasons, the volunteers sometimes provide gifts through liaisons and counselors. In Samantha’s case, they were touched to learn that there had been many tears of joy at the birthday party. The counselors had been very worried about Samantha, who was extremely depressed. She’d been on her own since age 11, “couch surfing” for five years. The gifts she received from Little Birthday Angels were the first birthday presents of her life.
Samantha’s 16th birthday became a turning point; she was so moved by the fact that total strangers cared enough to do something special for her that she began to feel better about herself and even applied for a paying internship for the following summer. Samantha’s story is an inspiring reminder that a small gesture can make a big difference.

The Mardy Fish Children’s Foundation fully sponsors an equine program that partners with the Homeless Children’s Foundation to recruit and register middle and high school students.
When the spring 2019 group arrived, Lila stood out, and not in a good way. She was distracting everyone and refusing to listen to the instructors.
Since horses respond to people based on how they treat them, it wasn’t long before the animals taught Lila that her behavior was only hurting herself. With the honesty of the horses and the guidance of the staff, Lila began to participate in a positive way.
Then one week she was absent. It turned out that Lila’s mother would not let her return to the horses until she improved her behavior at school. Lila never missed another session.
On the last day, Lila’s mother and elder sister attended the mock horse show the students had been preparing for. They cheered her on as she earned the highest score of the day for her riding pattern. Even sweeter than the victory was Lila’s heartfelt participation.
Lila returned to the spring 2020 program as a different person. She hopped off the bus and took some firsttimers under her wing, showing them how to groom and tack the horses. Even her grades and overall school performance had improved.

The ladies of the Military Moms Prayer Group not only meet to share support and to pray for their sons and daughters who are deployed in the United States armed forces, they are responsible for a steady flow of care packages to the troops, especially at Christmastime.
In addition to the generous community members who stock the boxes with such morale boosters as snacks, socks, hand warmers, toiletries and reading material, the Military Moms have some “secret weapons” overseas who help distribute the packages to their grateful colleagues. One such ally is 27-year-old Vero Beach High School graduate Bryce Saint-Vincent, a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. Based in Germany, he has also served in Afghanistan and has forwarded many of the care packages to troops serving in more remote areas.
In addition to thanking the Military Moms for the hand warmers that were most welcome in the cold aircraft in winter, Saint-Vincent writes, “Even though everyone complained that I was making them fat because of the snacks you sent, they always crowded around the box as soon as I brought it in from the mailroom. So you were successful in boosting morale with all the boxes.”

Greg, an IRS-certified VITA volunteer, walked Emily through her tax forms, claimed all the credits she was eligible for and maximized her refund. “When I learned I would receive $1,800, I was shocked,” Emily says. “Can you imagine how much money I missed out on because I was filing on my own?”
By helping hardworking families obtain the appropriate tax credits and refunds, VITA brings tax dollars back to lower-wage earners and to the local community.

The local chapter of the American Association of University Women recently had an interesting opportunity to help disseminate a message of self-love to the middle school-aged girls of Indian River County.
In 2016, Amanda Cox, an alumna of Indian River Charter High School who studied dance in college, created a stage performance called “Let Go,” geared toward encouraging self-acceptance in adolescents.
In 2018, AAUW Vero Beach awarded Amanda a grant to bring the dance production to hundreds of local middle schoolers. In order to reach such a large audience, “Let Go” would be reimagined as an educational video, “Let Go 4 Schools,” instead of a live performance and presented at schools, mental health programs and other vehicles that reach young people.
“By using the video format, we were able to touch so many more humans with our message,” Amanda says. “This alone has opened my eyes and my confidence to continue navigating new ways to reach more students for the sake of promoting self-love through the lens of movement.”

Impact 100 Indian River, a women’s philanthropy organization established in 2008 to improve lives in our community, focuses on making high-impact grants to local nonprofits. It’s a life-changing project reaching 200 students ages 5–18 each year, providing tools they need to become positive and productive citizens.
Fourteen-year-old Genese is one of those students. She has blossomed into a leader and broadened her horizons, learning valuable skills such as cooking, robotics, sewing and 3D printing. In the process, she discovered her passion for science and the environment. Genese used to struggle in science class, but now she finds it much easier to connect what she is learning to the real world. The program has also made a striking impact on her self-esteem.
Genese plans to study microbiology in college and specialize in the study of viruses and infectious diseases. “The program helped me so much mentally and physically,” Genese reports. “It gave me a clearer direction of what path I want to take in life.”

Haiti Partners, a local nonprofit organization, is working with the Children’s Academy, a school it founded near Port-au-Prince, on an initiative known as “Jaden Lakay” (“Home Gardens” in Haitian Creole) to give families the tools to fight hunger.
Eleven-year-old Herdes is a student at the Children’s Academy, where he and his classmates have been learning all about gardening so that they can play an active role in feeding their families. Thanks to the generosity of Haiti Partners’ supporters, Children’s Academy families and staff are being equipped with seeds, technical assistance and 125-gallon rain catchment systems to collect rainwater.
Herdes is excited to bring his newfound knowledge home, where he tends to his family’s bell peppers, broccoli, cabbage, spinach, beets, breadfruit and citrus trees, potatoes and beans. Herdes’ family considers the progress made by the Jaden Lakay project to be a miracle. The community is being strengthened, the children are learning a valuable work ethic, and a new spirit of hope is blossoming.

In spring 2020, The Learning Alliance’s Kindergarten Readiness Collaborative came up with a plan to make sure our community’s lowincome families had the supplies they needed to close the reading achievement gap while students were learning from home due to the COVID-19 situation.
TLA delivered 55 learning kits containing books and 275 educational activities to families in Fellsmere and Gifford. The response was so overwhelmingly positive that a campaign was held to raise additional funds and provide the kits to more families. Thanks to the community’s generosity, 50 more learning kits were delivered.
One Fellsmere parent says, “I am so happy with the materials and activities that came in the April kit. My two children enjoy the kits so much that they get up in the morning and tell me that they want to work on their homework!”

The ELC has long offered excursions in the Indian River Lagoon, and a new addition to the lineup offers exciting possibilities. Through a generous donation by local philanthropist Ann Tharpe, the ELC has replaced several of its well-used, somewhat worse-for-wear canoes with six new ones from See Through Canoe. As the name indicates, these canoes are clear, allowing occupants to enjoy a full view of surrounding wildlife while paddling the waters of the lagoon.
The donation also allowed for the purchase of eight adult and six youth personal flotation devices to be used with the canoes, as well as two Bimini tops to provide paddlers a bit of sun protection.
The ELC has already seen an increase in canoe rentals and is grateful to Ann Tharpe for helping provide residents and visitors new opportunities to grow in knowledge and appreciation of the complex and important ecosystem in our midst.
Most nonprofit “success stories” relate the achievements of those who have benefited from the organization’s services. But McKee Botanical Garden considers one of its greatest success stories to be that of someone who always seemed to be on the giving end of the equation: Alma Lee Loy.
In 2004, Alma Lee served as the first president of McKee, after having been instrumental in saving the property from development. It was Alma Lee who created the annual Community Appreciation Day, offering $1 admission so everyone can enjoy the garden. One of McKee’s greatest ambassadors, she helped raise money for the new Children’s Garden, the addition of which brought her great joy.
Alma Lee was a founding member of McKee’s Legacy Society, which helps ensure that the garden will continue to thrive for generations to come.
On second thought, Alma Lee’s story really is one of a recipient, because her altruism was rooted in her gratitude to God and the community for all the blessings she received.

Annette had never needed assistance with food before. But after six months on disability as a result of a herniated disc and subsequent surgery, she was finally cleared to return to work when she was told that her position in the food and beverage division of a retirement community had been eliminated as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. After nine years on the job, the news came as quite a blow.
Annette learned of Treasure Coast Food Bank’s mobile distribution centers and joined thousands of others who were in financial straits due to COVID-related job loss. She received milk, fresh vegetables and pantry staples in such generous portions that she was able to share the food with her son, grandchildren and a neighbor. “This food helps me survive during these trying times,” Annette says.
Treasure Coast Food Bank has seen the local need for food assistance increase by 200%, with many, like Annette, seeking help for the first time in their lives. Through the generosity of the community, TCFB has been able to provide 10 million meals to residents affected financially by the pandemic.

Maria had never fully realized the severity of the childhood trauma she had experienced. She had also underestimated the impact of the emotional neglect and manipulation she had experienced throughout her life. Then she recognized that fear and pain were dominating her life. She was “lifeless, too hurt to feel,” and was suffering debilitating panic attacks. She just couldn’t live this way any longer.
Maria entered the residential program at the Women’s Refuge of Vero Beach and, over several months, saw drastic positive changes in her life. “I now understand my worth and security in Christ and have gone through a liberating healing experience,” she explains. “I forgave those who hurt me and learned healthy boundaries so that I may have relationships that are pleasing to God. My faith has grown. I am so grateful for all that I have gone through because it led me to the Women’s Refuge, where I have gained a deeper understanding of God and developed a more intimate relationship with Christ.”
Maria now has a hope for the future that she couldn’t have imagined just one year ago.
In 2019, Christy was struggling to navigate services in the community for herself and her three children. The Hope for Families Center referred her to the Mental Health Collaborative, whose McCabe Connections Center helps people gain access to mental health and substance abuse services.
After an initial screening, staff members are able to make appointments, help clients overcome barriers that may be preventing them from making the most of available services, and follow up in order to help ensure a positive outcome.
Since first approaching the McCabe Center nearly two years ago, Christy has learned budgeting techniques, gotten her finances in order and obtained access to multiple programs in the community to serve her children’s needs.
Through her efforts, Christy has acquired a car and is now preparing to become a property owner for the first time.
“The McCabe Connections Center is great and always helpful,” Christy says. “I can rely on them for anything and everything.”

She decided it was time to go the Mental Health Association in Indian River County for therapy and guidance. “Before my therapy, I was very depressed and very sad,” she says. “I was assigned to a therapist and, after a few sessions, the therapy allowed me to get clarity on the issues at hand.”
The improvement in Hailey’s quality of life was palpable. “I was able to see the light and find a way out of the darkness. The therapy gave me a new perspective, and I was able to overcome my fears and able to open up and talk things out. This allowed me to remove a huge weight off my shoulders.

After serving as a forward observer in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, Bill was experiencing nightmares, trouble sleeping, flashbacks, survivor’s guilt and anxiety. He also realized that he was being uncharacteristically argumentative with the people in his life. We now know that all of these symptoms are consistent with PTSD. In the 1970s, however, knowledge of post-traumatic stress disorder was still very rudimentary, even in the medical community, so the Veterans Affairs hospital wasn’t able to offer Bill much help.
Fast-forward to the 21st century. Still suffering the effects of PTSD, Bill tried the VA again and received a diagnosis. Later, he applied to Dogs for Life and began a year of intensive training with his new service dog, a Doberman pinscher named Remington.
Remi performs both mobility- and PTSD-related tasks for Bill, who reports that having a service dog has made a big difference in his life. When he begins to feel depressed, Remi is there to break the flow of negative thoughts. When he has difficulty standing, Remi helps brace and support him.
“I would recommend any veteran who has problems and needs a service dog to contact Dogs for Life,” Bill says.

If the Heritage Center were a person, it would be an elderly pioneer resident who has held a variety of jobs, seen some hard times, and continues to be a cherished member of the community.
It was constructed in 1935 as the Community Building. During World War II, when thousands of military personnel were posted at Naval Air Station Vero Beach, it became the Servicemen’s Center, where many local young ladies mingled with the uniformed sailors at wholesome dances. A few even found husbands, and some locals tell stories about their grandparents meeting at those dances!
Over the years, the building took on different names and functions and eventually fell into disuse and disrepair. Now restored, it even graces the National Register of Historic Places.
The nonprofit Vero Heritage Inc. is now steward of the venue, which hosts family gatherings such as weddings and funeral repasts, as well as nonprofit events.
Recently, a close-knit family from all over the country was coming together in Vero Beach to celebrate the “baby” of the family’s 50th birthday. The venue they had booked fell through at the last minute, and the clan was left heartbroken. But the Heritage Center came through, and the family was able to create a once-in-alifetime memory.

The ages of 18–22 are usually full of excitement. For young adults who are homeless or aging out of foster care, this period is fraught with challenges, and the Children’s Home Society’s Transitional Living Program helps them prepare for adult life.
Joshua came to TLP from a crisis shelter just as he was turning 18. Thanks to the unrelenting support and lifelong advice he has received there, he feels ready for “the adult real world” and looks forward to achieving his goals, beginning with attending the University of Central Florida.
“The staff here at TLP have constantly been supportive and helping me every step of the way,” Josh says. “In a way they have been a family to me when at times I didn’t feel I had one.”
He continues, “Because of TLP I now see a future for me that is no longer dark and hopeless, but bright and filled with so much potential. If there is one thing I will always cherish and never forget about TLP, it is that they gave me a second chance. I’m truly blessed and so thankful to be a part of this program, and hope to see it grow as much as possible here and around the world.”
ROSELINE
Roseline is a home health aide — a rewarding profession, but one that has at times left her spending more than 30% of her income on housing costs alone.
When she began caring for Bob and Audrey Samuels, little did any of them expect the particular bond that would develop between the caregiver and the elderly couple. In the course of their conversations, Roseline mentioned her dream of homeownership and her thoughts of applying to Habitat for Humanity.
As it turned out, the Samuels were longtime Habitat donors and supporters, and they encouraged Roseline to apply, develop a personal savings account and complete the “sweat equity” required by Habitat, which can take many forms.
Roseline persisted through the program over many months, during which Audrey Samuels passed away. Roseline continued to care for Bob, who considers her a godsend, and he continued to motivate her. “I really have learned through Roseline what it takes to get a home,” says Bob. “It’s not an easy process.”
Roseline’s new home was dedicated on Jan. 5, 2019. She is delighted with the house, its location and the process. “It’s been a great journey for me,” she says.

WILLIAM FEARNThe American Red Cross has taught millions of people to perform CPR. Many will never be called upon to apply that knowledge in an actual emergency. Not so in the case of William Fearn, who has administered lifesaving CPR on three separate occasions — twice in the past four years!
The first time a shaky-armed William put his CPR training into practice was in 1998. By the time EMTs arrived on the scene a few minutes later, the victim had begun coughing and breathing on his own.
Then, in 2016, when a coworker collapsed, William once again sprang into action, performing chest compressions and rescue breaths and clearing the man’s airway before the ambulance arrived.
In 2018, a young coworker stopped breathing. “Unresponsive, not breathing, start chest compressions,” William thought, hearkening back to his trusty Red Cross CPR training. “I started chest compressions, which made her cough, and she regained consciousness in the ambulance.” The young woman was diagnosed with syncope, a fainting episode that can result from a variety of causes, and treated.
Using training he received from the Red Cross, William has saved three lives. Actually, the coworker was pregnant and went on to give birth to a healthy baby, so make that four!
BERTEL
It’s people like Bertel who inspire the Grand Harbor Community Outreach Program to support the work of United Against Poverty.
Bertel had built a successful career as an overthe-road truck driver before becoming gripped in a downward spiral. An unhealthy relationship and some poor choices led to the suspension of his commercial driver’s license and the loss of his job, home and car. Bertel then experienced a medical crisis.
When he heard about the new UP Center, Bertel made his way there and slept on a bench outside, praying he was in the right place. Indeed he was!
The next morning, UP staff immediately escorted Bertel to the on-site Treasure Coast Community Health clinic, where he received the critical care he needed. Then, through the efforts of UP’s crisis stabilization manager, workforce development team, STEP program and nonprofit partners, Bertel was able to recuperate in a motel for five days and then restore his CDL and reconnect with his previous employer, who was delighted to get him back.
Bertel worked his way from homeless and unwell to happy, healthy and employed in less than 10 days. When he thanked the UP staff before leaving to pick up his first load, he confided that he had arrived with no hope, but now he plans to return to UP to donate his time and resources to help others.

Venice and her husband, Kenneth, have lived with several family members in their retirement years. When a relative suggested they check with St. Francis Manor, which offers affordable independent apartments for seniors in an attractive, safe and socially supportive environment, the couple jumped at the chance. They filled out an application and then waited an entire year for an apartment to become available. St. Francis Manor was the answer to their prayers for a place to live.
Venice and Ken are enjoying an active life at St. Francis Manor. Both grew up farming and gardening, so they were quick to support a new community garden growing fruits and vegetables. Venice is a dedicated volunteer at the manor. “We have lived at SFM for five years and never want to move,” she says. “SFM is very affordable, and we were able to pay off all our doctor bills.
“SFM is very good to us, and we are so thankful for the donations and assistance that come from the Vero Beach community. SFM is the nicest place we have ever lived, and we are so grateful to live here.”

While the COVID-19 pandemic has brought much distress throughout the world, it has, like every adversity, generated opportunities for creative cooperation and problem-solving When venue closures nearly prevented Youth Sailing Foundation’s summer camp, Vero Beach Rowing saved the day by offering YSF the use of its new rowing center at MacWilliam Park
Add the contributions of all the donors to YSF’s scholarship funds, and all barriers were overcome: More than 175 local youngsters, no matter their cultural background or family finances, were given the opportunity to get out onto the water and learn skills that will last a lifetime And the older, experienced sailors were able to feel the joy of imparting their knowledge to a new generation of sailors
Children can enter the eight-week camp program not knowing the difference between port and starboard and come out as confident sailors, able to rig, launch and helm a boat, trimming the sails deftly and observing proper safety procedures The confidence they gain when an older sailor trusts them enough to hand over control of the boat is immeasurable, and they will never look at challenges in the same way again
Married couple Veruzka and Orlando, relatively recent immigrants to the United States, responded eagerly when their employer offered a program through which they could begin working with a Literacy Services tutor to improve their English They have made tremendous progress Both have received job promotions, and Veruzka is now a manager They have also purchased their first home!
Veruzka was named Literacy Services’ Student of the Year and spoke at the 2019 National Philanthropy Day With their tutor’s encouragement, they have become increasingly engaged in the community, joining the Vero Beach Museum of Art and enrolling their daughter in several programs offered in the community
Veruzka and Orlando love their new hometown of Vero Beach and are grateful to Literacy Services and its volunteer tutors for helping them achieve their English language literacy goals, which have served as a springboard for many exciting accomplishments
YWhen Vero Beach High School freshman Hamad heard about Youth for Christ’s Campus Life Club, he jumped right in, attending the weekly on-campus meetings The fact that he is a Muslim didn’t deter him in the least In fact, he “fell in love with what this club entails and its purpose Each and every one of the leaders that I have met have been some of the most welcoming, heartwarming people ”
Hamad is a young man who desires meaningful conversations, and he enjoys the dialogue provided by Campus Life Each week, the club opens up a discussion about a particular topic, and Hamad finds value in hearing the Christian point of view and exploring religion and its meaning
Youth for Christ believes that these discussions are a step toward bridging gaps in our community Though each of us is unique, we are much more alike than we tend to think — we all share the desire to be known and loved
Youth for Christ has made Hamad, now a junior, feel secure and loved If it weren’t for the Campus Life Club, he “would not feel nearly as comforted and would miss great conversations ”

Get to know more about an organization’s governance, management, finances and programs before making a significant gift. Find, learn about and give directly to more than 100 Indian River County charities by visiting www.ircommunityfoundation.org.
If you are confident in the organization’s mission and the results it is achieving, consider making a multi-year commitment to let the organization know that it can count on your contribution for years to come. Some organizations, such as the United Way, make it easy to give a recurring donation of any amount with a credit card online, and honor recurring donations of $10,000 or more as part of the Alexis de Tocqueville Society.
