GIAN ANDREA DI STEFANO
WELCOME It is my great pleasure to welcome you to The Mar-a-Lago Club. We all look forward to embracing the upcoming season which has so much to offer. In this issue, there is a warm chat with Paul Trupia, director of tennis operations. He continues to lead the tennis program since coming on board seven years ago. He is perennially popular with our tennis-playing members. Paul has an enthusiasm for the sport, as well as a natural feel for what it takes to create camaraderie. From day one, Paul scheduled a themed mixer every month that combines play with a luncheon. He reignited the junior tennis program and sparked the pro shop merchandising. Feeling unmatched? Paul would be delighted to suggest a pairing with a compatible player or even play you himself. It’s all in the details! Architectural, that is. Featured is an interview with Karl Spencer, a master restoration artisan who specializes in preserving the beauty of Mar-a-Lago by restoring its historic design. Everything that you see—from parquet flooring to fountains to gilded cherubs and perched parrots—is the domain of Karl. We all have a favorite feature or niche at Mar-a-Lago. There are so many that none of us could possibly have seen them all. These are the things that Karl sees with his keen eye for detail, beauty, and history; and he ensures that Mar-a-Lago is handled with kid gloves. I hope when you visit Mara-Lago that you, too, will become enchanted by the intricacies, as well as with the overall beauty, of this special place. New Year’s Eve is getting close and the Club is pleased to present a night to remember. It will be part deux of last year’s fabulous array of surprise headliners and special appearances. The evening will be led by the same great band as last year, Live 61, and streamed closed circuit. A complimentary professional photographer will be in attendance. I look forward to greeting each and every one of you at Mar-a-Lago. Best wishes for a wonderful season. Live well,

When The Mar-a-Lago Club closes in May and members disperse for summer, the grand dame’s caretakers arrive to ensure the 95-year-old landmark remains as elegant as she is during season. While maintenance and pampering continually unfold behind the scenes, restoration director Karl Spencer rolls up his sleeves during Palm Beach’s steamy summer months to focus on the preservation of details large and small within the elegant 65,000-square-foot, crescentshaped mansion. Take a tour of stunning architectural details that Spencer and his longtime assistant, Harold Johnston, have worked tirelessly to repair and restore.
Gold leaf was imported from Europe to meet the original design specifications.

EXTERIOR DORIA STONE COLUMNS According to the official history of Mar-a-Lago, three boatloads of Doria stone were brought from Genoa, Italy, because of the stone’s “quality of aging rapidly and for its adaptability to intricate carving.” It was put into extensive use throughout the property. Approximately 20 of the 28 exterior Doria stone columns had fractures. Nearly all of the hovering mourning doves intertwined above the acanthus leaves at the columns’ carved square bases were broken or missing features. Spencer undertook the preferred method of masonry repair: an epoxy structural crack injection system followed by another epoxy material that was artistically manipulated to match the original stone surface. Applied masonry pigments simulate the natural Doria stone color. Approximately 30 birds were replicated with durable hydrostone gypsum cement and painted earth-tone hues. 12
Born in Norwich, England, Spencer shared his father’s love of antiques and historical buildings and landmarks from an early age. He frequently accompanied his dad on daytrips and together they admired England’s rich architectural tapestry. “My father was a medical doctor, but he was good with his hands, too,” Spencer explains. “When he came home at night, he was a carpenter.” Spencer spent most of his five-year-apprenticeship in architectural restoration in England, where he studied and trained under esteemed artisans and craftsmen before traveling to France and Italy to increase his knowledge of OldWorld techniques. He went on to learn the art of gilding and gained first-hand experience restoring antique furniture and mirrors, working his way up to much larger projects, including cathedrals and a Medieval castle. In 1995, the preservationist traveled to New York City and decided to stay, seeing vast potential in the abundance of historic buildings in need of his magic touch. Spencer worked on several significant buildings in the Big Apple: The Dakota, constructed in 1884; the 1841 Church of the Ascension NYC; The Riverside Church, a Gothic gem conceived and funded by John D. Rockefeller; and numerous Manhattan brownstones. Some of his famous New York clients included Lauren Bacall, Warner Leroy (former owner of Tavern on the Green and The Russian Tea Room), Paul Newman, Yoko Ono, and Vera Wang. In 2015, Spencer began his tenure at Mar-a-Lago, which translates from Spanish as “sea to lake.” It was so named by Marjorie Merriweather Post (then Mrs. E.F. Hutton), who keenly oversaw its four-year construction and took residence in January 1927. Damaged from wear and South Florida elements, Spencer had his work cut out for him as he set about to repair and restore the 114-room villa to its original glory. “Mar-a-Lago was put on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. It is a jewel. I bring it back to how it looked 100 years ago,” he explains. “You have to know how to do it correctly. I use a magnifying glass to ensure everything I restore is as close as possible to its original appearance. I love my work and am so fortunate to work at Mar-a-Lago.”

OWNER'S SUITE The cloister to the owner’s suite has a barrel-vaulted ceiling with a gilded rope molding. Inside, walls are Doria stone (shell- and fossil-bearing limestone) adorned with antique Spanish tile. The entry steps have Spanish mosque tiles on the stair risers. (For her “cottage by the sea,” Post acquired some 36,000 tiles from an esteemed collection with the earliest tiles dating to the fifteenth century.) Following painstaking planning and preparation, repairs, replacements, goldleaf applications, and faux painting, the majestic space was restored to its original stature.

For four weeks, four hours a day, Spencer and Johnston toiled on the 42-foot-high ceiling while hoisted high in the air. Missing decorative elements were replicated using an impression silicone mold, then matching gold leaf was applied to enhance existing details. “It was not hard to stay up there when you are doing what you love,” Spencer says. 14

THE WHITE & GOLD BALLROOM PARQUET FLOOR
SCOTT ERB & DONNA DUFAULT ERB PHOTOGRAPHY
Square dances held in the ballroom by Post were once the hottest ticket in town. Restorative measures brought out the distinctive grains of the three woods—big oak, cherry, and poplar—comprising the parquet flooring.
CHILDREN’S SUITE Post’s youngest daughter, the late Vogue model and actress Dina Merrill, grew up at Mar-a-Lago, where she had her own suite. Time got the upper hand on the original hand-painted, floral bas-relief covering the beehive fireplace and spreading into the sleeping area. It could not be salvaged, so Spencer replaced it with hand-fabricated flowers and original artwork featuring fairy-tale motifs based on illustrations by mansion interior designer Joseph Urban.

CLOISTER
SCOTT ERB & DONNA DUFAULT ERB PHOTOGRAPHY
Nowhere is Post’s love of parrots more apparent than in the cloister—the wide, covered walkway that extends alongside the house. Parrots can be seen on the fountains, the bases of columns, and throughout the grand estate. Before Post moved into her beloved seaside retreat, it has been said that she had a family of parrots set free on the grounds with hopes they would remain indefinitely. When Spencer arrived, birds and parrots adorning the cloister walkway were visibly distressed and showed signs of discoloration and peeled paint. Others were broken. To resolve the problem, Spencer created casts of the statuary and categorized them, ensuring future replications will be historically accurate and easier to reproduce.

CLOISTER WALKWAY FLOORING
Years of wear and weathering left the open patio’s black-and-yellow geometric stars indefinable. The design is similar to a courtyard in Alhambra, Spain, that Post wanted to emulate. Removing the top surface sealer coat brought out the bold design. Next, the patio was cleaned and etched before being topped with a weather-resistant, protective coating.
SCOTT ERB & DONNA DUFAULT ERB PHOTOGRAPHY
To bring the flooring back to its original state, a cast was created to recreate its white ceramic inserts. The inserts’ strong Moorish influence is apparent in the recreated, decorative clay flooring detail. The black Doria stone was refurbished by chemically stripping before topping with a clear, protective coating.

arjorie Merriweather Post invested the same artful attention into beautifying the outside of her properties as she did to her interiors. She “loved her gardens. A Special Collection The Mar-a-Lago Club’s wine program features special-order, rare vintages, generation-spanning favorites, and winemaker dinners BY MARK SPIVAK
Wine plays a vital role in the culinary program at Mar-a-Lago, and the club makes a special effort to accommodate the wishes of members who have requests for allocated and rare bottles. “Many of our members have their own cellars and are extremely wine-knowledgeable,” says General Manager Bernd Lembcke. “We research their requests, and always try to locate and procure the wines they want.”
At Mar-a-Lago, as elsewhere in Palm Beach, tastes in wine have changed greatly over the past few decades. Traditionally, members had a preference for classic French wines such as Bordeaux and Burgundy, but in recent years, California wines have been gaining in popularity. Hard-to-find Chardonnays from the Golden State such as Kistler, Three Sticks, and Konsgaard are now fixtures on the club’s list, and complex Sauvignon Blanc such as Peter Mi-
chael’s L’Après-Midi are also favorites. Bordeaux remains popular, of course, and several dozen Grand Cru Classé are offered from every region of the Gironde, from Château Pavie and Ausone in Saint Emilion to the first growths of Lafite, Latour, and Haut-Brion. Château Petrus 2009 is the most expensive bottle on the list at $5,000, but there are occasions when even that won’t do. “One of our members wanted Château Pe-

trus 1982 for a dinner party,” says Lembcke. “He had the wine in his home cellar, but of course he couldn’t bring it into the club, so we found several bottles for him.”
TRENDS & TASTES By and large, member preferences at Mar-aLago tend to mirror national trends. Growth in Pinot Noir has been explosive over the past few years, given its approachability and ability to pair with a wide range of foods. The popularity of Pinot Noir has sparked a renewed interest in the red wines of Burgundy, and the club offers the best of artisan growers from both the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. Regardless of

the category, members are gravitating toward small, hand-crafted selections from dedicated vintners around the world: The list offers Syrah from Arnot-Roberts and Sine Qua Non, as well as the rare 2000 vintage of Dom Perignon P2, cellared at the property and re-released in perfect condition. There are more than 300 selections, and the hallmark of the list is its balance. Grower Champagne is offered alongside the Grande
Marques. In addition to the best-known names in Chardonnay from America and France, there is German Riesling, whites from the Rhône Valley, and selections from Spain, Italy, and Australia. The famous Cabernets of Napa and Bordeaux are complemented by the very best of Tuscany. The wine cellar is located in the basement, in a space formerly used by Marjorie Merriweather Post to store her furs. No modificaTHE MAR-A-LAGO CLUB 25

tions to the historic building are permitted, so the space can’t be enlarged; the staff orders in small quantities and pays close attention to inventory management. The heavy steel door of the fur vault is an architectural legacy. Above all, the wine program is responsive to the needs of the membership. “There was always a wine program at Mar-a-
Lago, but it wasn’t as well-defined as it is now,” says Rick Orsi, director of food and beverage services. “Starting with our previous sommelier, Briana Pestano, we went through a process of eliminating unnecessary selections that had accumulated over time before we could focus on building a new list.” Pestano “worked closely with the members and got to know their likes and dislikes,” Orsi says. “As a result of that relationship, we were able to pay increased attention to what members were asking for, and the wine list became more user-friendly—both in terms of bottles and wines by the glass.” Orsi agrees that wine preferences change with generations, and he observes that a new group of members is driving the shift toward boutique California wine. “We still have members who love Bordeaux and Burgundy,” he says, “but the trend in the wine industry is definitely toward the
New World. Our younger members are more knowledgeable about cutting-edge California wines, and those bottles form the foundation of their comfort zone.” Ten or 20 years ago, members would have been likely to order cocktails before and even during a meal; today, wine has become a normal and expected part of dinner. “The whole nature of a wine list has changed as well,” says Orsi. “In the past, many of them were written to impress diners. Now it’s all about substance and drinkability.” Not surprisingly, selections from the Trump Winery appear both on the main list as well as wines by the glass. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains along central Virginia’s Monticello Wine Trail, the estate spans 1,300 acres and is the largest winery both in Virginia and on the East Coast. Winemaker Jonathan Wheeler turns out a lineup including whites, rosé, sparkling wine, and age-worthy reds. The Trump wines are a popular selection for banquets, and they have become the personal favorites of many club members.

Mar-a-Lago wine dinners focus on the world’s top estates, with guests guided through the evening by an owner or winemaker.
WINEMAKER DINNERS The club’s unique series of wine dinners illustrates how tastes are adapting and changing. Many dining rooms host winemaker dinners, but Mar-a-Lago has traditionally focused on the world’s top estates, with the requirement that either an owner or winemaker be present that evening to guide the guests through the wines. Orsi observes that the club’s younger members are more likely to have visited emerging California wineries, and in many cases have developed personal bonds with them. Highlights from last season’s dinners included an evening with the wines of Paul Hobbs, an acclaimed winemaker for the past 35 years with properties in both California and Argentina, as well as consulting projects around the globe. His brother, Matt Hobbs, the winery ambassador, was on hand to

showcase the selections. On another special evening, Dr. Madaiah Revana—proprietor of Revana Family Vineyard in Napa, Alexana Winery in Willamette Valley, and Corazon del Sol in Argentina—was in the spotlight with Alexana winemaker Bryan Weil. Boich Family Cellar—a small property in Napa’s Mount Veeder appellation dedicated to producing limited quantities of world-class Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah—will be one of this season’s featured events. Winemaker Jeff Ames crafts unforgettable reds from iconic vineyard sites in the Napa Valley, including several from Beckstoffer Vineyards, as well as a stunning Chardonnay from the Ritchie Vineyard in the Russian River Valley. The winery’s tiny production is generally available only through a mailing list. One of last year’s innovations that will be repeated this season is a dinner organized by
a master sommelier, who chooses the wines to pair with the chef’s menu for the evening. This year’s event will feature Master Sommelier Andrew McNamara, vice president of wine development for the Breakthru Beverage Group. McNamara will be on hand during the dinner to present the wines and explain how and why he chose them, and he’ll be available to interact with members and answer questions. Of course, the role of the sommelier extends beyond helping members select wines with dinner. At Mar-a-Lago, the sommelier also runs an educational program for the staff, holding training seminars in wine etiquette and bringing in distributors and winemakers to conduct tastings. In this way, the wine program becomes dynamic and interactive for the members, even at times when the sommelier may not be physically present in the dining room. d THE MAR-A-LAGO CLUB

Clay Court Conversation Q&A with Paul Trupia, Mar-a-Lago director of tennis operations BY MARY THURMAN YUHAS
Paul Trupia first played tennis at 18 in Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx with a tennis racquet bought with grocery-store green stamps. “After the nets were torn down two or three times, the parks department replaced them with chain-link fencing,” recalls Trupia, the Mar-a-Lago Club director of tennis operations. “It is an irony that never escapes me. Every day when I arrive at wonderful Mar-a-Lago, I always chuckle.” During his college years at Fordham University in the Bronx, Trupia played on the college tennis team. He continued throughout his career as a fashion industry executive playing
tennis at the exclusive New York Athletic Club at Travers Island in Westchester County, New York. “I thought I had died and gone to heaven,” Trupia says. In 2013, Trupia and Elizabeth, his bride of 40 years, moved to South Florida. Trupia started his second career as a tennis assistant in 2014 at Mar-a-Lago, certain it was something he would enjoy. Turns out, the tennis professional more than enjoys it. “It’s like a family experience. A lot of the people here have worked here for 20 to 25 years. I thought the Athletic Club was great, but this is even better,” he says. “I’ve worked here for sev-
en years, and it’s a phenomenal facility. I look forward to coming to work every day.” Get to know Paul Trupia and his tennis staff, their plans for the season, and what makes the Trump Tennis Center one-of-a-kind. What makes Trump Tennis Center special? Our members make it special. They are such a diverse group and come from all over the world. Some are here for the season and some for just a couple of weeks. That makes it even more interesting. Secondly, this is a world-class facility. We

have five courts and are the only ones on the island with American red clay courts. Red clay is easier on the body and can be purchased only once a year from North Carolina. Once it’s gone, there is no more until the following year. Unbelievable views of the Intracoastal and the beautifully maintained property from the courts add further to the Trump tennis experience. We even have music on the courts. It helps make a stress-free environment. Sometimes during warm-ups, we play pump-up songs. Players have shaded seating. Every year, I add something. This year I added a new entry gate on Court 1 so members can walk from their cars to the courts. We continually maintain and upgrade the facility. Who are the other instructors? I have the greatest staff. They are all elite teaching pros and one of the strongest teaching teams anywhere. Max Mead, a Lynn University graduate, is the assistant head pro. Terri Gaskill and Nikki Roth, both national tournament winners and longtime instructors, work part

time and offer private instruction by appointment. Vincent “Vince” Spadea, also assistant head pro, is a former Olympian and Association of Tennis Professionals player who had a career-high world ranking of 20. Spadea works part-time and gives private lessons by appointment. In his tennis career, he beat tennis greats including Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. What is your greatest strength as an instructor? My philosophy is to keep it simple. I’m not as interested in the angle of the racquet as I am in teaching students to see the ball and hit the ball. Some pros make it more complicated than it needs to be. Does Trump Tennis Center have league play? We keep members involved through monthly coed round robins, weekly clinics, private instruction, and a lot of socials. Our round robins are always booked. Our most important aspect is to play tennis and make it fun. This year, we are introducing the Trump National and will play the Trump National Golf Club in Jupiter for the Trump Cup. Hopefully it will start a new tradition. Our most popular event is the Lynn University ProAm tournament for men and women in January. A member partners with a
Lynn University student in the competition. What is the dress code? Our dress code is 90 percent tennis whites, which is traditional and more of an upscale look in keeping with Mar-a-Lago’s identity. Ten percent of clothing can be nonwhite. We have a fully stocked tennis shop for members. Our ladies’ tennis wear is refreshed weekly with new merchandise in a beautiful environment. Do you do anything special on weekends? On Saturday and Sunday, we have a gratis continental breakfast for tennis players on the patio in the front. Nonplayers relax in the shade under the signature Trump-striped, banana-yellow and white awnings. My goal is to make sure that the Trump Tennis Center experience is at the same level as everything else Mar-a-Lago offers club members.
